ONE of the most common basic open-hearth furnace products is a simple carbon steel with a carbon range from 0.05 to 0.15 per cent. The material is widely used for sheets, tubes, bars, wire and the innumerable special objects of secondary fabrication. The properties of the material vary over wide ranges, depending on the more exact composition and details of manufacture or treatment that affect its structure. The present paper is a review of those properties and structures that have been found by studying this steel as used in the cap screw industry. At first glance this might be thought a narrow application of the steel, but, since the industry uses the material in the cold-worked, annealed and heat-treated conditions, the title of the paper may be excused for its comprehensiveness. Yet, in studying the wide ranges of properties and structures that preclude a more specific title, there can be no suggestion of completeness or finality. Even a summary of a few years' work is no more than a preliminary survey of a field that will be fertile in scientific data and industrial products for many years to come. An outline of the structures will be given first, then a list of the previous contributions that are at hand and finally some details of the work and related problems, especially concerning this low-carbon steel in the surface-hardened condition.

The Upgraded Coal Interest Group (UCIG), focuses on clean, low-cost options for coal-based power generation via pre-combustion, co-firing and reburn options. Its mission is to preserve and expand the economic use of coal for energy. By reducing the fuel costs and environmental impacts of coal-fired power generation, existing units become more cost effective and thus new units utilizing advanced combustion technologies are more likely to be coal-fired. Two great forces are reshaping the power generation industry, the Clean Air Act Amendment and deregulation of generation. The Clean Air Act Amendment is forcing change by making it necessary for power producers to plan for reducing emissions of sulfur and nitrogen oxides and possibly trace elements. At the same time, deregulation of generation is forcing utilities to focus their attention closely on the short term impact of any change on cost of power. Fuel is a utility's largest cost element; maximum fuel flexibility will be a utility's best weapon in an environment of rapid change. In a regulated environment, a utility was limited in how involved he might get into fuel supply, in a purely deregulated environment he need only be guided by the impact on the bottom line. It is clear that these two forces will promote a close look at factors such as coal upgrading which can have an impact on the availability of low sulfur coal or emission of NOX and trace elements.

The paper was originally presented at a FHWA's Transportation Research Board meeting and is presented here with the author's consent. Construction and design of drilled shaft foundations in hard pinnacle limestone requires flexibility from all parties involved due to the variability of the subsurface conditions. This article describes some strategies which have been found useful in the Birmingham, Alabama area. The importance of well trained and experienced field personnel in these conditions is noted. It is also vital that engineers understand the construction challenges so as to provide both quality assurance and cost effectiveness in design and in the specifications.

The thermite process, now approximately 80 years old, has heretofore been practiced in ceramic vessels. This paper outlines the successful production of several million pounds of alloy produced in zuater-cooled copper vessels. THE high temperatures necessary to produce fluid high-alumina slags have probably discouraged earlier workers from attempting to utilize water-cooled vessels. The following is a report of the successful application of this method, together with a report of the physical and chemical problems which had to be solved to make the process practical. About 1955, when Reading Alloys was more concerned with the production of ferrotungsten than with most other types of alloys, it was found to be exceedingly difficult to predict the reaction rate that one would experience from one tungsten ore to another . This difficulty was increased for two reasons: the physical state of the ore as received was seldom uniform, and the size of the mass to be reduced is a very important factor in developing the proper mix for the final reaction rate and temperature. For example, the reduction of ferric oxide with aluminum would theoretically produce temperatures of about 2600°C, and, in spite of the losses due to radiation, the energy is quite sufficient to produce a very fluid slag and iron effecting a very clean separation. On the other hand, the reduction of ferrous oxide with aluminum, while it is not as energetic as the first reaction, nevertheless should give temperatures above 2000"C, which should cause separation of alumina and iron, but, in practice, this is not the case and good fluid slag is not obtained. The heat of reaction, calculated from the thermo-dynamic heats of formation of the constituents of the reaction, offers a convenient guide to the feasibility of a thermite reaction. Thus, the values listed in Table I can be used as an approximate guide for estimating the results which may be expected in the reduction of various oxides and combinations of oxides using aluminum as the reducing agent. As a generalization, those reactions releasing approximately 600 cal per g of total mass represent the lower limit at which to expect separation of slag and metal. On the other hand, those reactions which release 1100 to 1200 cal per g are too violent to be used successfully without the addition of considerable inert material, such as lime, fluorspar, and so forth. Reaction rate is also a very important factor. This, of course, is governed very largely by the sizing and intermingling of the oxidant and reductant and by the starting temperature of the reactants. This is why those figures shown in Table I can only be a general guide. Further, it must be understood, that by adding powerful oxidizing agents, such as nitrates, chlorates or metallic oxides, such as molybdenum trioxide or chromium trioxide, certain problems respecting low temperatures are not necessarily solved. This is true in the addition of oxidants, such as sodium chlorate. By adding too high a concentration of sodium chlorate as a booster for a particular reduction, explosions are generated. Generally, they are of an intermittent type so as to give a Roman Candle effect to the reduction itself; with each surge resulting from a minor explosion more and more material is thrown

"Mineral prospectivity modelling of polymetallic nodule deposits has been completed over the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (CIEEZ) using the GIS based Weights of Evidence modelling technique. Polymetallic nodules, also known as manganese nodules, have been explored as a possible resource for a number of metals including cobalt since the early 1970s. Recent data on the nodule composition and abundance in the CIEEZ has led to a renewed interest in the prospectivity for manganese nodules in the region. The predictive modelling has used the most recently accepted mineral model for polymetallic deep-sea nodule deposition to identify factors that are most likely to map the presence of this type of mineralisation in the CIEEZ.Manganese nodules form on the deep seafloor as concretions formed by concentric layering of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core and they grow at a very slow rate, on the order of millimeters per million years. The available data for the CIEEZ indicates a greater abundance in the area of nodules formed by hydrogenetic processes, which are the result of slow precipitation of metallic components from seawater. The environment in which the nodules are most abundant is at depths between 4,000 m and 6,000 m in areas of low sedimentation rate. Hydrogenous nodules commonly grow on siliceous and pelagic clay sediment, they are less common on other types of sediment."

A copper alloy containing- 25.5 at, pct Zn and 19.0 at. pct Ni, which was previously found to show an anoma1old.s hardening effect on quenching- from 600 "C and aging- at 400oc, has now been examined by neutron diffraction. No evidence of long-range order was found. The aged sample showed diffuse scattering- consistent with clustering. The anomalous hardening effect is now attributed to lattice strains caused by clustering rather than (long-range) order hardening. SOLID-solution Cu-Ni-Zn alloys (the commercial 'nickel silvers") have been reported to show anomalies in: change of resistivity on cold working,1-6 temperature coefficient of resistance,2-12 resistivity at low temperatures,13,14 parameter (vs temperature),2"4 calorimetric data,2,4 specific heat,15,16 dilation,2-4 and elastic modulus.17 The structure responsible for the anomalies is produced by annealing typically near 400°C and is rather loosely referred to as the ('K-Zustands" (K state), a term coined by Thomas1' who apparently meant simply that the arrangement of atoms on the sites deviated from that expected statistically. Thomas proposed that the K state occurred in a variety of (solid-solution) alloys such as Cu-Ni-Zn, Ni-Cr, Ni-A1, Ni-Cu, Fe-A1, and Fe-Si and is recognized because its formation is strongly temperature-dependent and results in an increase in electrical resistance which can then be decreased by cold working. Later workers on ('nickel silver" have interpreted the K state variously as short-range order, long-range order. or a combination. The present work was prompted by the discovery by Phillips and Jones19 of a substantial hardening effect when an 18 pct "nickel silver" alloy which is fairly close to the Cu2NiZn composition, was reheated in the range 150" to 450 C after previously quenching from 600°C or, alternatively. was slow-cooled from 600°C or above. The phenomenon was attributed to (long-range) order hardening. Due to the similarity in the atomic scattering factors of copper. nickel, and zinc atoms, the ''nickel silvers" are unfavorable for X-ray diffraction studies aimed at detecting ordering. Nevertheless Bialas et a1.,20 using a powder sample containing 47.96 wt pct Cu, 24.03 wt pct Ni, and 27.98 wt pct Zn, slow-cooled from 400" to 200°C taking 500 hr, observed weak super lattice lines. Further unpublished work" using an anomalous dispersion X-ray technique indicates that zinc atoms are regularly ordered at the corner points of the lattice cell, while the nickel and copper atoms are statistically distributed on the remaining sites. Köster 17 also observed X-ray superlattice lines, for example, in an alloy containing 43.5 wt pct Cu, 28.6 wt pct Ni, and 27.9 wt pct Zn superimposed on the basic fcc cell with a = 3.62 kX. He proposed a Cu3Au-type superlattice with the Ll2 structure in which the A sites were statistically occupied by copper and nickel atoms and the B sites by zinc. He adds that substitution must be possible so that zinc atoms partly occupy A sites. Below about 35 pct Cu, Koster had some evidence for a CuAu-type superlattice with the Llo tetragonal fcc structure with a = 3.82 kX, c/a = 0.88 which could be preserved by quenching. This is suggested17722 to correspond to CuNiZn. While the present work was in progress Hirabaya-shi et a1.23 made an independent comprehensive neutron-diffraction study of a single crystal containing 50.05 at. pct Cu, 26.57 at. pct Ni, 0.25 at. pct Mn, 0.13 at. pct Fe, balance zinc. The presence of manganese and iron is surprising since the crystal was supposedly grown from high-purity metals. The homogenized crystal showed evidence of long-range ordering after an anneal of 5 months at about 300°C. Three possible crystal models were proposed. A curious feature of their results23 is that they could not find any neutron-diffraction evidence of ordering in a powdered polycrystalline near-stoichiometric Cu2NiZn alloy. There appears to be some essential difference between a near-stoichiometric Cu2NiZn alloy and one somewhat further off stoichiometry as used by the present authors. Thus Sato14 was able to reproduce the low-temperature resistivity anomaly reported by one of the authors13 on the present alloy if he used a similar composition, but found the normal behavior of the residual resistivity in a near-stoichiometric alloy. satol2 found that the resistivity of a cold-drawn slightly off-stoichiometric alloy increased to a maximum on isothermally annealing at 300°C and then decreased ("over-aged"). Since he could not explain this on the basis of ordering phenomenon, he proposed that zinc atoms were segregating to stacking faults (Suzuki effect) and found etching bands on the surface by replication which were attributed to the widening of faults. Sato suggested14 that the hardening effect observed by Phillips and Jones19 is partly due to the Suzuki effect. Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (OceanaGold) has commenced mining operations at the Globe-Progress mine in the Reefton Goldfield, an area that historically produced 2.1 million ounces of gold from underground quartz lode deposits. During the construction phase of the operation, advanced exploration programmes targeting near-mine prospects commenced. The focus of this ongoing exploration is the discovery of near surface, refractory gold deposits that are amenable to open-pit mining methods and treatment through the Globe-Progress process plant.   One such discovery is the Supreme deposit, located along strike approximately 3 kilometres to the south of the Globe-Progress mine. The Supreme area was tested extensively with diamond drilling in 2006, defining a deposit with similar mineralisation styles and grade to the Globe-Progress deposit. The mineralisation comprises a central core of gold-bearing quartz veins, locally containing visible gold, surrounded by a more extensive halo of refractory, disseminated gold associated with an arsenopyrite-pyrite sulphide mineral assemblage. Three subparallel mineralised structures host the mineralisation. These structures are highly oblique to the country rock orientations, extending approximately 250 metres along a northeast-southwest strike and at least 220 metres down-dip, with an average thickness of 12 metres and moderate dip to the southeast. Records of historical workings indicate that mineralisation extends further down-dip and remains open at depth. 5175 ounces of gold were mined historically at the Supreme deposit. OceanaGold have defined an Inferred Resource for the Supreme deposit of 0.84 million tonnes at 1.46 grams per tonne for a total of 40 000 ounces (at a 0.8 grams per tonne cut-off). Higher-grade zones of mineralisation exist within the deposit and further drilling is planned to test the extent, continuity and geological controls of the mineralised structures.

A 24,300 tonnes per year state of the art Silicon smelter is being constructed for Barrack Silicon Pty Ltd at Kemerton, 20 kilometres north of the City of Bunbury in Western Australia. The plant is designed for the reduction of high purity quartzite lump to metallic silicon in two 27MVa Demag submerged arc electric furnaces. The primary reductant, a high purity charcoal, will be manufactured at the plant from locally sourced jarrah wood waste (Eucalyptus Marginata). "Abstract This paper shows that a raft alone is not sufficiently appropriate to address the uncertainty of underlying soil variability; therefore, a piled raft system is a better option for mitigating such uncertainty. To study the variability of soil, the behavior of the Piled-Raft Foundation was analyzed with a type of self-drilling micropiles: the ""Alluvial Anker"" (common name for this pile type in Brasilia city). These micropiles have been used in the city and have the advantage that the drill pipe also serves as reinforcement. The studied parameters belong to an elastoplastic constitutive model for strain-stress analysis of soil; variability of these parameters can be intrinsic and/or epistemic. Simulations were performed for a hypothetical Piled-Raft Foundation subjected to vertical loading using the random finite element method. The average parameters of the constitutive model were obtained through laboratory tests. The simulations of the load test were compared with results of a real scale experimental test conducted exclusively for this work in the field. It is analyzed the relative importance of the variability of some geomechanical parameters and their variation with depth is considered. In addition, it is discussed a comparison between the uncertainty of the geomechanical parameters and the uncertainty of the results of the vertical loading test. Finally, this paper shows that a decrease of the safety factor may occur when taking into account the variability of the parameters.IntroductionBrasilia is located in a highly weathered residual tropical soil (lateritic & latossol on pedogenetic concepts). This soil presents high content of alumina and iron due to the lixiviation process of the upper layers. As a consequence, the cemented structure is highly unstable and it can generate strong changes of volume (i.e. collapse) due to changes in both moisture and state of stresses. Therefore, a greater understanding of the construction of Piled-Raft Foundation systems on this particular soil conditions is needed – especially because it covers more than 80% of the surface area of the Brazilian Federal District.Thereafter, this work investigates the influence of the variability of the soil parameters over the uncertainty of the Piled-Raft Foundation design. The studied parameters belong to an elastoplastic constitutive model for strain-stress analysis of soils. The simulations were performed for two hypothetical Piled-Raft Foundations subjected to vertical loading by using the stochastic finite element method. The results were compared to real load tests in Piled-Rafts with “Alluvial Anker” pile types."

In over ninety per cent of mineral sand plants, the most commonly used equipment is the spiral concentrator. The tonnage treated over typical spiral plants can range from as low as 200 ton per hour up to 6 000 tons per hour. Due to the limited capacity of each spiral, plants consist of multiple spirals assembled into banks. The mixture of minerals present in the sand feed requires several spiral stages to achieve the desired mineral recovery. Due to the complexity of the spiral circuits, there are always some design and operating problems that present themselves in plants. These range from slurry distribution, spirals operating at incorrect design parameters and feed variations. The material being treated is difficult to maintain in suspension due to its high density, resulting in segregation and preferential flow in pipelines, distributors and sumps. The objective of this paper is to highlight common problems associated with spiral installations to designers and operators of plants. Practical solutions are recommended in order to prevent and minimize these mistakes in the design. These solutions may be used to improve performance on operating plants.

Although the De Beers group has a long history of placer mining on land, the group only became actively involved in deep water marine diamond exploration and mining in 1983 with the formation of DeBeers Marine. Full-scale commercial mining commenced around1991. Since then, the group marine mining capability has grown into a formidable fleet of 8 large deep water (>70 m) mining vessels, as well as other special purpose geosurvey platforms. Marine diamond production by the group is expected to be just short of 1 million carats in 2006. De Beers operates across the entire value-chain spectrum from geology and geosurvey, through sampling to mining, and finally ore processing into high value concentrate. Supporting these operations involves significant service activities such as maintenance, security, logistics and environmental management. Specific challenges exist in terms of developing or acquiring appropriate technology for marine mining. These challenges have resulted in De Beers operating extensive in-house R&D and projects departments, as well as drawing extensively from technology partners. An array of computational and test facilities is also available to support R&D and projects activities. Hydrotransport in various guises is key to the current approaches to marine mining and ore processing. Use is made of airlift and centrifugal pumping for hydraulic hoisting of very coarse gravel, while splitters, launders, dewatering, elutriators, jet pumps, centrifugal pumps, dense medium circuits, pipeline systems, and instrumentation for coarse abrasive particles are used extensively in the ore processing plant.

A cut-off wall has been designed and is currently under construction along the Back Dam of the existing tailings impoundment at Red Dog Mine, Alaska. The cut-off wall, which will be in the order of 5,000 ft long and up to 150 ft deep, when complete, is being excavated using a 40 metric ton Bauer trench cutter head mounted on a Liebherr crawler crane, in combination with a closed loop slurry pumping and de-sanding system. The tailings impoundment is situated in an area of warm permafrost and high potential seismic activity. Design incorporated an assessment of rock jointing to define the final depth of the wall along the alignment requiring the use of plastic concrete backfill to address the concerns associated with potential cracking of the wall due to settlement and during seismic activity. The results of the geotechnical investigation program, particularly with respect to variation in rock hardness along the wall alignment are discussed, as are the design criteria for the plastic concrete backfill, the challenges faced during construction, including scheduling of the work with the on-going dam raise activities of the mine, and the lessons learned with respect to potential productivities and selection of cutter wheels and teeth. Also described are the requirements for and advantages of utilizing a slurry boosting system to meet pumping requirements, re-design of the plastic concrete mix to consider workability and optimization of cutter teeth configurations to reduce wear through highly varied rock hardness.

Through the courtesy of the State Department, the Bureau of Mines has received a compreensive report on the jede industry of Burma, pre- pared by American Consul Winfield H. Scott, Rangoon, Burza. This mater- ial is the main basis for the present circular, although free use also has been made of reports on the jede industry in China and Germany by consular officers in those countries, to whom footnote credit is given. The word "jade" is said to be derived from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" (hijada) meaning, literally, "stone of the side," as jade was supposed to cure pains in the side; nephrite (a jade mineral) was named from the Greek word meaning kidney, because it was formerly warn as a re- medy for kidney diseases. To the Burmeso, jade is known as "Kyauksein," or green stone, and to the Chinese, all varieties of the material are referred to as "Yu" or "Yu-chi", According to Confucius, jade was symbolical of. justice, harmony, intelligence, and humanity, and the Chinese of today believe that by using ornaments made of this stone, the wearer is. protected from the "evil eye" as well as from diser.se. Ornaments of carved jade were known to the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Peru and to the peoples of other sections. of Central and South America, Jade ornaments also have been found in the lake dwellings of Switzerland and in Crete; thile in China, as far back as the Chou dynasty (B. C. 1122 B. C. 255) it was used in the production of various classes of precious vessels and as insignia of rank.

Mineral-deposit geology, geochemical processes, and biogeochemical processes are fundamental controls on the environmental conditions that exist naturally in mineralised areas prior to mining, and that result from mining and mineral processing. Input from economic geologists and geochemists is therefore crucial to effectively predict, assess, mitigate, and remediate the environmental effects of mineral-resource development. Recent open pit gold mining at Summitville, Colorado , has received intense public scrutiny for a variety of environmental problems, most important of which has been extreme acid drainage. Now a Superfund environmental cleanup site, Summitville exemplifies how economic geology and geochemistry principles: 1. could have been better utilized to first predict and minimise the environmental problems, and 2. can now be used to optimize the environmental cleanup.

Concerning the excavation of rock cavern, it is one of the most important issues to evaluate the behavior of rock joints. But few detailed measurements for joint behavior had been conducted. Therefore, in order to evaluate the stability of rock cavern, effective approach for monitoring and analyzing the joint behavior needs to be developed. In this paper, authors described the results of analysis for joint behavior during the excavation by comparing with both results of the in-situ measurement by BTV and the numerical analysis by MBC model. Bei Ausschachten von Gesteinshöhlen ist es von besonderer Bedeutung, das stark von den Verbindungsteilen beeinflusste Gesteinsverhalten zu bewerten. Jedoch wurden bisher nur wenige Beobachtungen über das Öffnungsverhalten von Verbindungen durchgeführt. Daher muss ein effizientes Verfahren zur Überwachung der Stabilität unterirdischer Höhlen und der Analyse des Verhaltens von Verbindungsstellen entwickelt werden. In der vorliegenden Studie beschreiben die Autoren das Verhalten von Verbindungsstellen während der Ausschachtung durch Vergleiche sowohl mit den Ergebnissen von in situ Messungen mittels BTV als auch numerische Simulation mit dem MBC Modell, welches auch Diskontinuitäten berücksichtigen kann. Quand il s’agit d’excaver une caverne dans une roche ayant des joints très développés, il importe fort d’évaluer le comportement de la roche. Cependant, le nombre d’observations du comportement des roches effectuées au niveau de joints est loin d’être suffisant. Par conséquent, pour s’assurer de la stabilité des parois des cavernes souterraines, il a fallu mettre au point une méthode fiable de détection et d’analyse du mouvement des joints. Dans cet article, les auteurs décrivent leurs études de comportement des joints pendant l'excavation, en comparant les résultats des mesures effectuées in-situ, dans un chantier d’excavation par BTV , avec ceux d’analyse de la simulation numérique par MBC permettant de tenir compte des discontinuités.

IN the construction of a set of ordinary mine plans, two axes or coordinates are used; also, two different projections are essential viz., a plan (horizontal projection) and longitudinal section (vertical projection). In isometric projection three axes are employed-one axis vertical and the remaining two inclined to it at angles of 120°, also making an angle of 120° with one another, as shown in Fig. 1. The two inclined axes are used to plot the horizontal projection, while altitudes are plotted on the vertical axis. As an illustration, consider the ease of a simple object, such as a box. To show all the dimensions in the usual manner requires two drawings-a plan and elevation, as in Fig 2.

The labour question is one that has caused mine managers much thought and anxiety and is likely to continue to do so as long as human beings exist. The difficulty is to devise some arrangement whereby the interests of miner and mine ownerare identical. Mines cannot be worked without capital, and capital is no good without labour, yet, though both have the mine in common, their interests are not exactly the same. Some men are happy so long as they can scrape through by exerting themselves as little as possible, but capitalists do not work mines for charity, they want some return for their money.Where a large number of men are employed there are bound to be examples of all sorts, good and bad, and it is because one cannot depend on all, that different methods of employment have to be adopted. Which method is selected depends to a great extent on the labour market, local conditions, nature of the ore and the way in which it occurs.A big step towards success is obtained by securing the services of good bosses, not only those who know how work should be done, but men who have a knowledge of human nature. It is a big mistake to be too lenient with a man, also to be unnecessarily harsh. A good boss will always be sought out by good men who have worked under him before, or who have heard of him from others. By a good boss we do not mean one who employs two men where one would do, or who lets the men loaf...

Nowadays, technology has improved to extract dimensional stone blocks at quarry sites and also to process these at processing plants for making slabs and tiles. In the process of quarrying and processing, performance evaluation of machinery is very important to achieve optimum output at minimum cost with improved technology. Cost analysis of improved technology includes parameters such as manpower, energy consumption, tool consumption, depreciation, maintenance and also others. The chainsaw machine with long boom and rail in marble quarries and multi-diamond wire saw machine for slab making from granite blocks at processing plants have recently been introduced in India. Thus, a study was carried out under a research project on these machines to assess their suitability. In this paper, performance evaluation and cost analysis of chainsaw and multi-diamond wire saw have been carried out with existing machines on the basis of research findings.

The Ridgeway gold mine has been an enigma of the international underground hard rock community for nearly 20 years. It nearly didn’t eventuate as it was more than 500 m below a farmer’s paddock in Central New South Wales when the exploration team, looking for open pit deposits, got a sniff on its last attempt and then drilled the high-grade discovery hole. It took separate studies to find an economic mining approach. Newcrest, then a mid-tier mining company, took the venture that set it on a path of growth and built what was to become the backbone of the company for the next 15 years.The initial mining method was sublevel caving (SLC) for the upper 300 m of the orebody. The nameplate production rate for the SLC was 4 Mt/a, which was reached in June 2002 shortly after the commissioning of the materials handling system. The ultimate production rate was subsequently lifted to around 6 Mt/a through a series of innovative and efficiency initiatives. In June 2007, approval was granted for the development of a block cave (BC) operation to extract the ore reserve situated immediately below the existing SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps. The BC was designed at approximately 6 Mt/a to match the concentrator and a systematic improvement process through the entire underground system again saw delivery rates consistently around 10 Mt/a.In line with the production rate increases, Newcrest was also committed to advancing caving knowledge through a number of targeted research and development experiments and new processes. These were primarily related to improving cave ore recovery through systematic draw marker trials, cave propagation through preconditioning techniques with associated monitoring systems. New technologies were also developed to improve the safety and efficiency of the mine through data collection, cave establishment techniques, production dispatching and autonomous loading.CITATION:Dunstan, G, 2016. The Golden Cross, low-sulfidation, epithermal deposit shows a number of features that are directly or indirectly related to boiling hydrothermal fluids. Occurrences of lattice calcite and their quartz pseudomorph equivalents in veins, and occurrences of adularia in veins and in the surrounding altered rocks in the vicinity of ore, are both direct evidence of deposition in the presence of boiling hydrothermal fluids. Loss of carbon dioxide causes calcite deposition (platy variety) near the level of first boiling, while adularia deposits due to the attendant pH increase along the cooling flow path. Indirect evidence of boiling include crustiform-colloform quartz banding, late massive calcite veins, clay-carbonate alteration in the shallow and peripheral parts of the ore zone, and the restricted vertical interval of precious metal mineralisation. The colloform quartz banding strongly resembles the banding in amorphous silica deposits found in geothermal surface pipes. This implies that fluids ascending the Empire Vein structure were saturated in amorphous silica. If so, then they must have undergone phase separation, which initiated at considerable depth (e.g. =1000 m) and very hot temperatures (e.g. =300¦C). On the basis of stable isotope data, late massive calcite veins appear to have deposited from CO2-rich steam-heated waters. Calcite deposited along heating paths as these waters descended into the upflow zone during late stage collapse of the hydrothermal plume. In active systems, such steam heated waters form by deep boiling. The high CO2 contents of these waters promote hydrolytic alteration and the formation of clay-carbonate alteration. Reaction path modelling using CHILLER and a deep, Broadlands-Ohaaki water as an analogue, shows that minerals deposit along boiling flow paths over discrete spatial intervals. Calcite and adularia deposit near the site of first boiling, followed by gold and then by amorphous silica. For deep boiling starting at 300¦C, these minerals deposit over a path length that exceeds 1000 m. The distribution of banded quartz and gold at Golden Cross are consistent with such a boiling model. However, the elevation of first boiling must have fluctuated over 500 m to account for the coincidence of lattice quartz (pseudomorphs of platy calcite) and adularia, crustiform-colloform silica and gold over distances of a few centimeters in veins. We deduce that a downward propagating boiling front and expansion of two-phase flashing in a flowing water column occurred during episodes of high vertical permeability and fluid flux in the Empire vein structure.
