Many factors affect the overall performance of a gravity circuit beyond that of the primary gravity recovery device. It is critical to examine the gravity circuit in its entirety in order to determine the dominant operating variables that affect overall performance. Knelson has developed a mathematical model which has been used to assist in the design of gravity circuits, and in particular, in making accurate predictions of plant scale gravity recovery. More recently, inclusion of recovery by particle size class and additional data from various mine sites and research studies has made the model more robust. The model is now able to predict GRG (gravity-recoverable-gold) recoveries using various devices such as centrifugal concentrators, shaking tables, jigs and flash-flotation within the grinding circuit. The benefits derived by these recent advancements in modeling capability are two-fold; the first is as a tool to assist in circuit design and correct equipment selection and the second is as an analytical tool to help to evaluate and enhance the performance of existing gravity circuits.

In the drive for faster development advance rates, railbound systems can be advantageous, in the right application. Skanska BS, the contractor to mine-owner VSK Mining, is driving an adit access deep into the Volouské Urchy Mountain in Slovakia to access the Gemerská Poloma talc deposit, some 70 km (43 miles) west of Ko?ice, the economic and cultural center of eastern Slovakia. Skanska began driving the Stolna Elisabeth drift in February 2007, extending 25 kg/m (50 lb/yd) rails (with 750 mm or 30 in. between sleepers) into the mountain to provide the main haulage to bring talc ore and waste out of the new mine once it gets into production. It will also be used for personnel transport, and is now almost complete. As a second egress and for ventilation, a 2.5-m- (8.2-ft-) diameter shaft of about 300-m (984-ft) depth will be sunk from surface down into the orebody. Stolna Elisabeth is a 4.2-km- (2.6-mile-) long drift mined at a cross section of some 11 m2 (118 sq ft). The finished profile is 3.2-m- (10.5-ft-) wide by 3.6-m- (11.8-ft-) high. It has been developed on a very slight incline so that water runs down it to the portal. The portal is 450 m (1,476 ft) above sea level and the end of the tunnel is 475 m (1,558 ft) above sea level. Much of the rock through which it has been developed is magnesite with a compressive strength of 150 MPA. The drilling jumbo is an Atlas Copco twin-boom Boomer 282 Raildrill drilling 42- to 45-mm- (1.6- to 1.7-in.-) diameter holes to a maximum length of 2.5 m (8.2 ft), depending on ground conditions. This is a drill jumbo that Skanska has used successfully on a number of projects during its life. The condition of the rock through which this drift has been driven is extremely variable. Five classifications of A1 and A2 and B1, B2 and [ ] B3, where A1 is the most competent rock and B3 is the worst, have been established. The amount of support used, of which more later is determined by the classification of ground conditions. At the time of the author?s visit, the project it was about 40 days ahead of schedule, thanks to high advance rates. For instance 6 m/day (20 ft/d) was the plan for the advance to be achieved in B1 rock, but sometimes the crews have achieved 8 m/day (26 ft/d) ? which is the average for the whole project ? in those conditions. In A1 the best advance rate achieved is 12 m/day (39 ft/d). The loading unit is a Häggloader 9HR-B on crawler tracks with a pony track to run on the rails. This allows the unit to be towed up and down the drift along the rails. To load from the face, the Häggloader lowers the foot of its onboard conveyor system to the floor and the backhoe pushes material on to it. This digging arm-conveyor combination produces uninterrupted, optimal volume loading of the haulage unit, without spill ? a technique offering load capacities as high as 180 m3/h (6,356 cu ft/hour). Significant movement to an existing slurry wall which serves as a retaining wall on 'O' Street in Southeast Washington, D.C. initiated the Department of Public Works for the District of Columbia to invite specialty contractors to propose a rehabilitation and stabilization for the failed slurry wall. Nicholson Construction Company proposed and was awarded a contract for the construction of an anchored precast lagging and soldier pile wall to be located approximately 4 feet in front of the existing structure with granular fill placed between the new and existing walls. Stabilization of the existing slurry wall also included drilling horizontal weep holes and demolishing the failed panels down to the existing ground surface. A new and improved drainage system was also constructed to increase the amount of water directed toward the existing storm sewer system running along 'O' Street. This paper provides a detailed account of these construction activities.

"This paper focuses on determining the favorable geological and hydrogeological conditions for forming uranium occurrences in the Froqlos-Jabal Abou Rabah region, Palmyrides, Syria. Eighty rock samples from this area were analyzed by spectrometric gamma-ray technique to determine the radioactive concentrations of eU and eTh, and of %K. Uranium concentrations in shallow and deep groundwaters were also determined. High uranium concentrations were registered owing to the presence of phosphatic outcrops in the study region. The uranium migration trends and its remobilization were analyzed through the analysis of the behavior of eU, eTh, and their ratio. A positive relationship between eU and eU/eTh, and a negative relationship between eTh and eU/eTh in geological formations of different ages supports the secondary remobilization of uranium. The role of groundwater movement in transportation and redeposition of uranium mineralization is discussed: deep waters are less oxidizing than near-surface waters, and do not appear to have significantly remobilized uranium. This indicates that the source of secondary uranium mineralization is surficial or near surficial, and is mainly related to the leaching of outcropping phosphatic layers.Integration of the results with established radioactive and geological sections reveals four radioactive anomalous zones: north Froqlos, Kherbet Hannora, northwestern flanks of Jabal Abou Rabah (Kherbet Al-Hajar), and the northwestern limit of the Ghuntor depression. The high uranium concentration in north Froqlos is because of its original presence in the phosphate beds and extensive fracturing, which allows groundwaters to penetrate and remobilize the uranium. High uranium concentrations in the other three locations are caused by the presence of evaporites and capillary action, which draws solutions upwards and causes redeposition as surface crusts (gypcrete)."

Although known since 1902, the Capitan iron deposits have not been tined, mainly because of the low grade of the ore. Only a small amount of exploratory work has been done since the discovery. C. H. Johnson, district engineer of the Bureau of Mines in New Mexico in 1942-4, visited the property; as a result, preliminary sampling of the property was done in 1943.2/ Owing to the results of this preliminary work, an extensive development program by wagon drilling was planned and executed early in 1944. Equipment available at that time was limited in the depths that could be reached; and as geologic studies indicated the possibility that other limestone beds below the surface might have been replaced by iron minerals, a supplementary development program by churn drilling to reach greater depths was prosecuted in late 1947 and early 1948, with the author as project engineer.

A most renewing and promissing soil displacement screw pile is called the O-pile. The O-screw pile is a soil displacement auger pile based on a screwing in - screwing out procedure. The displacement auger head consists of a discontinuously diameter - increasing steel tip, on top of which the continuous screw flange with variable pitch is mounted. The soil displacement is kinematically ensured by downwardly oriented slots mounted on the auger head at different well chosen locations on the flanges. This leads to a very efficient lower energy screwing-in sequence of the pile and consequently to a high penetration rate. A test loading program of instrumented O-piles has been carried out in order to evaluate the load settlement behaviour, the shaft and tip capacity of the O-pile, including its specific installation parameters.

The acid plant consists of the following units: 1. Glover tower. 6. Mills-Packard type chambers. 3. Reaction towers. 6. Gay-Lussac towers.The sulphur dioxide bearing gases, used in the manufacture of the acid, are obtained from the roasting of zinc concentrate. Six Herreshoff type furnaces are available, each with an effective hearth area of 520 sq. ft.The concentrate contains approximately 30% sulphur, of which about 72 is ultimately recovered as acid. The oxides of nitrogen are added to the gases in the requisite proportions partly from nitrous vitriol and from nitric acid in the Glover tower, and partly from nitrous vitriol in some of the chambers and connecting flues.The acid leaving the Glover tower is cooled by the ordinary water-cooling coils, while the cooling of the chamber gases is effected by circulating water over the outer surface of the chambers, and by spraying nitrous vitriol and weak acid into them.Flow of gases throughout the plant is regulated and controlled by means of regulus metal fans, fitted with variable speed gears.

It is well accepted that the blast furnace will continue as the main route for iron-making for many more years. However, its limitations have motivated researchers to look for alternative routes, particularly, those where non-coking coal is used for liquid iron production. Smelting reduction (SR), where coal and oxygen are used to produce liquid iron and power is now receiving serious attention. Several smelting reduction reactors are now operating in pilot plant scale and one or two have reached commercial status.

In 1998, the Concentrator Modeling Center was established within the Coleraine Minerals Research Lab to develop models for simulation of iron ore processing plants, and to assist plant operators in improving performance of their aging plants. The short-term objective was to develop necessary models for reliable simulation using conventional techniques, while the long-term objective was set as liberation-based modeling and simulation of these plants. The short-term objective was achieved in 2002, after the development of models for magnetic separators, hydroseparators and fine screens. A project funded the US Department of Energy was carried out to demonstrate the capability in improving iron ore processing at the Mittal plant. As a result of this study, a 10% improvement in throughput at the plant was obtained, and simulation became a desired tool for plant operators. A significant step in the long-term objective was reached in 2005 with the development of a liberation model. This was followed by incorporation of models capable of processing liberation data into the software. By early 2007, the Center had the capability of performing liberation-based simulation of entire plants.

Typically, large volumes of data are collected during geotechnical investigations for mining projects but rarely is this done in a comprehensive manner that enables all aspects of the geotechnical environment to be evaluated. A geotechnical core logging process has been developed to record mechanical and structural properties of the rock mass. The method enables data for a wide range of rock properties and geotechnically significant major structures to be collected including rock strength, joint surface condition, fracture frequency and fracture orientation. The logging method is unique in that sufficient data is collected to enable the independent determination of all the major rock mass classification systems including rock mass rating (RMR), (Bieniawski 1976, 1989; Laubscher, 1990) Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) tunnelling quality index (Q) (Barton, Lien and Lunde, 1974) and geological strength index (GSI) (Hoek, Kaiser and Bawden, 1995). The logging system has been specifically developed to allow better and more precise appreciation of rock mass and structural conditions across the project area thereby optimising the use and application of the available geotechnical data and improving confidence in the outcomes of geotechnical investigations. This paper describes the core logging process with case examples showing how the logged data can be used for underground and open pit mine design.

Control of ground water for construction purposes is an everyday occurrence in the U.S. Thousands of pumps are in service at any given time. Most of these applications simply consist of pumping water out of an excavation, generally with the aid of sumps. Modern hydraulic and electric submersible pumps permit these procedures because of their ability to pump solids and take air without losing their prime. These procedures work fine up to a point and permit the contractor to control his ground water problems adequately and at minimal cost. When that point is exceeded, the ground water problems sometimes are compounded. Over-application of open pumping techniques can result in slope failures, cofferdam instability, bottom heaving, boils, loss of ground, damage to adjacent structures and utilities, and assorted other maladys which could and should be avoided. This paper will deal with the options involved in ground water control, a discussion of the unwanted side effects of dewatering, and examples of ground water control projects in various cities around the U.S.

Refractories are unique ceramic materials, which are used in large quantities in steel making furnaces, metal smelting vessels, and glass melting tanks. They are required to possess high thermal shock properties and good slag corrosion resistance as well as creep resistance at high temperatures. Therefore, they are made from very refractory minerals such as lime, periclase, corundum, spinel, and zirconia. Slags are vitreous materials produced as a residue in steel refining processes. They cover a wide range of compositions and may contain pure oxides, silicates, and sulfides as well as fluoride phases depending on the melting and smelting processes. These minerals exhibit spectacular cathodoluminescence color under electron bombardment; therefore, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy is found to be a superior technique for the characterization of refractory corrosion by slags. Examples included in this study are (1) reaction of fluorine containing mold slags with ZrO2-C nozzle refractories promoting crystallization of the Cuspidine, Ca4Si2O7(F,OH)2, (2) corrosion of fusion cast refractories in TV panel glassmaking furnaces and formation of glass defects, and (3) reaction of spinel based castable refractories with copper smelting slags.

A study was conducted to investigate high gold grades in water lines and carbon fines collected from the Musselwhite gold recovery circuit. It was discovered that fine magnetic particles in the overflow from the carbon fines settling tank launder had high gold grades ranging from 2,000 to7,000 g/t. The -37 micron fraction had up to 17,000 g/t gold. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the gold was attached to the surface of iron particles. The objective of the study was to identify possible mechanisms that result in the attachment of the gold to the magnetic iron particle surface and to recommend process modifications that would reduce these types of gold losses around the carbon circuits. Solid and solution samples were collected from the gold recovery circuit and analysed. Two possible mechanisms were identified including gold cementation onto iron and heterocoagulation of colloidal gold onto iron oxides in the elution column. Possible sources of the colloidal gold include reduction of gold cyanide complex to metallic gold in the carbon regeneration kiln and gold detached from cathode in EW cell. Based on SEM+EDX, the sources of iron were natural magnetite and roasted iron sulphides. Thermal reduction of gold is believed to be the cause of dendritic gold from the carbon regeneration kiln.

"Water is a very important component in the production process at underground coal mines. Current unfavourable economic conditions have forced the coal mining industry to identify and address every possible bottleneck preventing optimal production. An increase in water-related downtime was identified as one of the bottlenecks at Goedehoop Colliery’s Vlaklaagte Shaft. The purpose of this project was to identify the various causes that contributed to the high downtime (501 hours in 2013, which led to a potential profit loss of R12.9 million) and to suggest possible solutions.After a thorough investigation the main causes of water-related downtime were identified as low water pressure and low water flow caused by pipe leakages and bursts. The main root cause for the low water flow and pressure was identified as being the low pressure resistance (1600kPa) of the thin-walled galvanized steel pipes used in the underground inbye water reticulation system. The pipes were selected according to the previous 1000 kPa pressure requirement for the continuous miner. However, the pressure requirement changed to 1500 kPa, which resulted in the pipes being exposed to much higher pressures than designed for.The water reticulation system was reviewed and current and future underground pipe layout and water requirements were determined for the shaft. The time frame in which the water consumption would be the highest was determined to be between 1 January 2014 and 7 September2014. Machine and sprayer specifications were used to determine theater consumption at the shaft. Three different solutions were considered to solve the water-related downtime problem and to ensure the efficient supply of water to the newly open sections. Permanent underground concrete dams, semi-mobile dams, or new pipe columns with a higher pressure resistance of 3200 kPa were considered. A trade-off study (taking into consideration cost, time to completion and ease of implementation, maintenance requirements, safety, and flexibility) was completed to determine which of these solutions would be most viable.Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. A series of experiments was conducted to determine the effects of roasting temperature, soaking period and quantity of soda ash added. At a laboratory scale, under optimum conditions of roasting at 873 K for 2 700 s with soda ash 10 wt% in excess of stoichiometric, molybdenum recovery was 99%. The investigations indicate the technical feasibility of producing high-purity MoO3 by combining the roasting process with carbon adsorption/desorption. The process uses low-cost chemicals, can be scaled up readily and is free of the SO2 pollution generated by conventional roasting, as the sulphur content of the concentrate is converted to sodium sulphate

Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. Aluminium powder is not a substitute for dust control.PATHOLOGYThe pathological picture of silicosis in men engaged in the ceramic industry is somewhat different from that in hard rock miners." The object of this investigation is to determine the field for the use of detachable bits in metal mines of the United States by correlating the data developed through the experience of mines using these bits. Most of the metal-mining districts in the Middle Western and Eastern States already have been visited. The purpose of the present circular is to define the problem and to discuss the factors that must be considered in order to determine, under different operating conditions, the advantages and disadvantages of this type of bit. Some of the data obtained to date are presented to emphasize points made in the discussion. It is hoped that, as the study progresses, a great many data on drilling will become available. It is evident that since in some cases these data will be confidential they cannot, therefore, be published except as they may be included in average figures covering several different mines. Some data already secured are of this nature, Although considerable information on drilling operations has been gathered at different mines, there were only a few instances in which there were available complete data on all the factors entering into the total cost of drilling with detachable bits and with conventional bits on regular drill steel.

All these projects are as demanding as they are characterized by a tight time schedule.
