Wattle Gully Gold Mines N.L. of Chewton, Victoria, has decided to replace its present battery plant by a new mill to treat a free milling gold ore, after fine grinding, by concentrating coarse gold in a jig concentrate for amalgamation, and fine free gold and auriferous sulphides in a flotation concentrate for cyanidation. This paper outlines the economic justification and advantages of this step. In a review of the present position at the mine, a history of the company is followed by a description of the ore and its occurrence.Present treatment practice in two separate battery plants is described. Treatment tailings assay 1 dwt/ton gold and a substantial part of this gold is finer than 200 mesh.Experimental work showing how recovery may be improved is discussed and alternative methods of concentrating coarse gold mentioned. It is decided that the most suitable method for recovering gold from the ore is by jig concentration plus flotation.The merits of various flowsheets incorporating these techniques in the existing plant and in a new plant are assessed. It is concluded that there is no advantage in extending or converting the existing two battery plants, and it would be more economical and satisfactory to build a new plant.An economic study shows that for a capital expenditure of £120,000 a new plant could be erected to treat 70,000 tons p.a., working a 5-day week, and return an additional 14.2/- per ton, or £50,000 p.a., in revenue over the existing plant. It is estimated the plant cost can therefore be recouped out of savings inside three years. This report describes the engineering feasibility and economic advantages of using a mobile bridge-type cross-pit belt conveyor system in conjunction with a large dragline to excavate and transport spoils in a typical Western surface coal mine. The studies show that such a system could be built to survive operational and climatic mining conditions, and that its implementation would offer a reduction in both acquisition and operating costs versus conventional mining units of comparable rapacity. Reclamation costs can also be significantly reduced, and the total reclamation process accelerated, making the cross-pit conveyor system attractive to mine Owners and environmentalists alike.

"Abstract - The early Paleozoic accretionary tectonic regime that was established along the Laurentian margin of the Newfoundland Appalachians provided a favorable setting for shear-hosted gold mineralization along a major terrane suture, the Baie Verte-Brompton Line. The Stog’er Tight prospect is one of several mesothermal-style gold occurrences hosted by shear zones within accreted ophiolites and oceanic arc terranes on the Baie Verte Peninsula. It is an epigenetic, stratabound deposit that is confined to shallow-level gabbro sills within the volcanic cover sequence of the allochthonous Point Rousse ophiolite complex. Gold mineralization at Stog’er Tight is associated with hydrothermal mineral assemblages represented by chlorite-calcite, sericite-ankerite, red albitepyrite (±Au) and chlorite-magnetite alteration zones. Gold occurs with pyrite within the intensely altered gabbro, along the margins of syn- to late-shear, quartz-rich, replacement veins.The Stog’er Tight gabbro served as a rigid body conducive to shear deformation and fluid penetration, whereas, its high Fe-Ti oxide content induced fluid oxidation and gold-pyrite precipitation. Hydrothermal alteration involved progressive CO2, S, Na, and LILE metasomatism, along with significant enrichments in the REE, HFSE, and Th in the high-grade ore zone. Temperatures of vein formation and alteration are constrained by oxygen isotope thermometry to be between 250°C and 480°C. Isotopic compositions of vein quartz from the Stog’er Tight prospect are uniform (??O = +12.5 ± 1‰) and fall within the range cited for many shear-hosted, auriferous quartz veins.A U-Pb zircon igneous age of 483 +3/-2 Ma for the Stog’er Tight gabbro is consistent with its stratigraphic correlation with other Ordovician ophiolitic and volcanic arc/back-arc assemblages in Newfoundland. The U-Pb age of a rare variety of hydrothermal zircon recovered from the high-grade ore zone directly constrains the timing of gold mineralization to 420 ±5 Ma, in accord with a major orogenic episode of Silurian age that produced many of the magmatic and metamorphic rock suites in north-central Newfoundland. Our results are consistent with a post-peak metamorphic, late-magmatic model for gold mineralization that occurred during the waning stages of Silurian orogenesis, driven by emplacement of I-type granitoid intrusions into the crust."

The first version of the longwall strata control and maintenance system (LSCMS) has been successfully developed by the Strata Control Re¬search Team at the University of Alabama. The system includes a software package designed to monitor shield leg pressure, interpret the data and predict the forthcoming roof loads and the existence of geological anomalies. It can also detect maintenance problems of the face equipment. The LSCMS was installed underground and connected to the surface terminals at Drummond's Shoal Creek Mine in Alabama. The system has proven to be a useful and practical system for improving safety and efficiency in coal-mining operation. The Shoal Creek Mine is a new, large coal mine operated by Drummond with two longwall panels. The Blue Creek seam is the primary source of coal production. It is located at a depth of 275 to 440 m (900 to 1,450 ft) below the surface with an approximate 2% southwest dip. Typical strata conditions are represented by two stratigraphic columns (Figs. la and b). A fireclay/dark shale parting (called Middleman) 0.2- 0.7-m- (1- to 2.5-ft-) thick exists between the Mary Lee and Blue Creek seams. Mining conditions vary from area to area. This mainly depends on the Blue Creek seam thickness that ranges from 0.9 to 2.9 m (3 to 9.5 ft). The thickness of the Mary Lee and the parting is relatively consistent with a to¬tal of 0.9 m (3 ft). This paper aims to assess the current and future role of coal in energy strategy of Turkey and evaluates the compatibility of the policies to the EU energy policy and strategy. The Turkish government set targets to utilize more coal reserves of the country in next decades. However, the country is also in the process of becoming an EU Member State, hence, it is expected that the energy policies have to comply with the EU. Moreover, Turkey ratified Kyoto Protocol, thus the country should limit greenhouse gas emissions. Clean Coal, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies are expected to become an important instrument for the mid-term reduction of CO2 emissions from coal-fired power plants. An alternative technique to the conventional CCS methods is CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation. Turkey has significant resources of magnesium silicate minerals (olivine, serpentine) deposits which can be utilised in CO2 sequestration by mineral carbonation method.

The stabilization of austenite in Fe-Ni alloys against martensitic transformation after reversion has been attributed' to the lattice imperfections remaining from previous transformation. More recently, however, such stabilization has been associatedzy3 with compositional changes which occur in martensite during slow heating. Dislocation arrangements in deformed austenitic stainless steels strongly influence transformation to martensite on quenching.4 Therefore, it is of interest to observe the transformation behavior of stainless steel after reversion, especially since previous studies have been confined to Fe-Ni alloys. The transformation-product morphology also differs in the two iron-alloy systems;6 plate martensite forms in the latter while stainless steel transforms to lath-type martensite. Samples of Fe-16 wt pct Cr-12 wt pct Ni (maximum C + N = 0.005 wt pct, 0 = 0.02 wt pct), prepared by vacuum melting and casting from high-purity components, were annealed at 900°C for 24 hr, after cold rolling to produce a 40-p grain diameter. The M, temperature of this alloy is -80°C and samples are fully austenitic after annealing. The amount of martensite present after quenching, annealing, and requenching was determined magnetically, to within 0.01 wt pct, using a vibrating specimen magnetometer. Nearly 14 pct of martensite forms during the initial quench in 1 min at -196°C. Two-min and 2-hr anneals were done in air and in evacuated quartz capsules, respectively. All specimens were electro-polished before making the magnetic measurements.

Previous analyses of small samples of mining projects have found that feasibility studies tend to well under-estimate the actual capital costs of the project. Our review of 63 mining and smelting projects completed over 4 decades confirms that as-built capital costs are, on average, 25% higher than as estimated at the bankable feasibility study stage. There appears to be little attenuation over time of this bias in capital cost estimation, at first appearing to reflect an absence of learning on the part of the consulting engineer. We instead argue that this persistence of bias is intentional, driven by a scarcity of project financing and the need to inflate the project economics in a bid to secure financing. Around this intentional bias is a considerable amount of scatter. Roughly half of all projects’ as-built capita costs fall outside of the expected ±15% of the feasibility study capital cost estimate, even after allowing for intentional estimation bias. Cost overruns of 100% or more happen in roughly 1 out of 13 projects. The data reveal that a shifted lognormal probability distribution should be used when modeling mining project capital costs in a Monte Carlo analysis.

The Japanese government enforced the "Small Domestic Appliances (SDAs) Recycling Law" in 2013. The law targets metals such as Ta, Nd, Dy, Co, and W to be recycled. Considerable amounts of these minor rare metals are mounted on printed circuit boards (PCBs) of the SDAs and/or e-scrap (electric and electronic scraps). Although precious metals and copper can be recovered from the e-scrap in non-ferrous metals smelters, most of the minor rare metals report to the slag in these smelters in non-recoverable forms. These metals are often used in particular types of devices, and therefore it is possible to concentrate them by separating such devices before feeding to the smelters. In previous work we developed technology for "Device Separation" to concentrate several minor rare metals, but some problems remained, such as how to remove the PCBs from e-scrap bodies, and how to detach devices from PCBs after their removal from escrap bodies. This paper proposes a two-stage crushing process in which, firstly, PCBs are removed from the e-scrap body with various crushers, and secondly, devices are detached from the PCBs involving the application of elevated temperatures. It was found that in the first stage, crushers with physically flexible rotating media such as chains, which provide high collision probability with the sample and consume relatively low energy, can quite effectively separate the PCBs from the e-scrap bodies non-destructively. In the second stage, heating was found to be remarkably effective in helping to detach mounted devices from PCBs, also non-destructively. This paper will also discuss the detailed mechanism of the heating effect on the detachment of devices from PCBs.

Frontier/Traylor is presently completing construction of twin tunnels for the Tri-County Metropolitan Transit District of Oregon’s (Tri-Met) westside lightrail system. The tunnels are each 4,550 m (14,935 ft) in length and 6.48 m (21.29 ft) in diameter. The 1/3 of each tunnel was driven from the west portal using drill and blast methods and the remaining 2/3 was driven from the east portal using a TBM. The paper describes: The difficulties encountered by the TBM mining the weathered Columbia River Basalts. The execution of drill and blast work despite challenging ground conditions, stringent noise and vibrations specifications, and public relations problems. A cyanidation study was conducted on a mild refractory gold ore sample from the Central zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. Gold, at a grade of 8.00 g/t, is present as native gold, electrum and aurostibite. The ore also contains 2.8 per cent pyrrhotite, together with several antimony minerals (0.8 per cent berthierite and gudmundite, 0.18 per cent native antimony and stibnite). It also exhibits weak preg-robbing properties with 0.16 per cent organic carbon. Aurostibite, a gold antimony compound, is particularly known to be insoluble in cyanide solution. The antimony dissolves in cyanide solution to form antimonates, which retards gold dissolution. Industrial practice of extracting gold from aurostibite generally consists of producing a flotation concentrate, which is leached in a pipe reactor at low alkalinity and high oxygen pressure with about 20 g/L cyanide. The proposed new approach is efficient and allows the extraction of gold directly from an ore at atmospheric pressure and a low cyanide concentration at pH 10.5. The effects of grinding, pretreatment, lead nitrate, kerosene and cyanide concentrations have been investigated. The maximum gold extraction obtained on the ore was 87.9 per cent using 800 ppm NaCN, 500 g/t lead nitrate, 30 g/t kerosene, DO 10 ppm and pH 10.5 in 168 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.3 kg/t. The additions of lead nitrate and kerosene increased gold extraction. In comparison to a P80 of 74 ¦m, a P80 of 30 ¦m significantly increased gold extraction. Gold in solid solution in gudmundite and arsenopyrite was believed to be responsible for the unleached fraction until mineralogical analysis of hydroseparation concentrates of leach residues showed that most of the unleached gold occurs as aurostibite, either as locked grains in sulfides/sulfarsenides or as grains with passivation rims of an Au-Sb-O phase. Coarse gold was also found. Gold extraction was not sensitive to cyanide concentration from 250 ppm to 1200 ppm NaCN and high pH was detrimental. Decreasing the cyanide concentration reduced the cyanide consumption to 0.85 kg/t. The removal of coarse gold using a Knelson concentrator and a Mosley table prior to leaching increased the gold extraction to 90.4 per cent (leach residue at 0.77 g/t).

Contract H0177044 included three objectives; (1) consolidate, maintain, and distribute information on STE approved lighting systems; (2) develop and present one-day seminars on underground mine lighting; (3) determine direct labor and hardware costs associated with the installation of mine illumination systems. All objectives were completed with results as follows: Task I - A file containing 1350 Statements of Test and Evaluation (STE) for all types of underground equipment was developed and publicized throughout the coal fields, A total of 40 requests for STE information was received and processed. Task II and III - A series of 50 seminars was scheduled and presented to 942 attendees throughout the coal fields. The seminars were well received and attendees indicated the information presented would be helpful in bringing their equipment into compliance. Holding a series of seminars in the coal fields, instead of a few in population centers, was favored by attendees. Task IV - Installation cost data obtained on 415 lighting systems indicate that the factors which most affect installation costs are higher hardware cost for DC powered systems and slightly higher manpower requirements for systems installed underground. Based on these data, the total cost to industry of retrofitting existing underground equipment could range up to $50 million.

The state-of-the-art in cave seismic monitoring is reviewed, with the latest developments in active seismic monitoring included. Seismic monitoring systems are routinely used by most of the world’s block and panel caving mines to track the cave initiation and progression. The current best practice is to use the cloud of seismic event locations as a proxy for cave growth somewhere below. Problems with event location reliability due to seismic ray bending around the (unknown) cave are side-stepped by using sensors installed above the cave. However, the aseismic gap – the (unknown) distance between actual cave back and seismic event cloud – currently hinders reliable estimation of cave geometry.Velocity inversions using the passive seismic data are inexpensive and should be undertaken more routinely. The straight-ray methods should be used with caution, as the underlying assumptions are invalid in caving environments. The double-difference method is more correct for the caving situation, and there have been some promising results published. Constrained geometric inversions make a lot of sense, but have yet to be demonstrated successfully.Two active seismic source have recently been developed for use in the caving environment: a piezoelectric source for ranges up to a few hundred metres and a pneumatically-powered source for ranges up to a kilometre. These sources produce signals on standard mine seismic sensors that can be used to measure seismic velocity variations down to 0.01 per cent resolution. This allows the cave progression to be monitored by measuring tiny changes to seismic velocities as the rock above the cave is fractured and destressed.CITATION:Lynch, R A, 2016. Owing to the increased consumption of sulphuric acid; Australian manufacturers have, from time to time, been seeking for a satisfactory source of sulphur that would make them independent of foreign supplies.Some years ago a considerable amount of acid was obtained from the roasting of Spanish pyrites. This ore, in 1913 or thereabouts, cost 16s. per ton f.o.b. Huelva, and freight to the eastern seaboard of Australia was about 20s. per ton. As the ore contained 48% to 50% of available sulphur, it was costing roughly 9d. or 10d. per unit, and, in addition, the cinder, after roasting, was a product of considerable value to smelters, containing as it did a high percentage of iron suitable for fluxing, and appreciable values in silver and gold.

Historically, miners have known that roof rocks originally composed largely of mud were prone to slaking and deterioration when exposed to water and humidity. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) records show that roof falls are more prevalent in summer and late fall. Field data shows higher bolt loads and increased room convergence in summer months. Laboratory data shows that very high internal pressures can be generated by significant strain in clay-rich rocks. In summer months humidities ranging from 70-100% can cause rock strains up to 7%, and rock pressures of 14,000 psi, more than enough to break apart weak shales and fireclays. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted wet/dry immersion cycling of clay-rich rocks. Results show that the rocks most prone to moisture deterioration are fireclays, claystones, and sandy shales, all of which have disrupted bedding. Of the 7 mudrocks with a weatherability index above 40%, none showed consistent fissile bedding. Black shales were surprisingly resistant to wet/dry water immersion cycling. Generally, mixed rocks (stackrock), typically susceptible to horizontal stress, are more resistant to moisture-deterioration. Mine roof rocks tested with moisture sensitivity ratings above 50% (moisture sensitivity index ranges from 0-100 with 100 being the most sensitive) all came from mines which had roof skin problems and used supplemental support to prevent rock fall injuries. Some roof rocks showed lateral variability of moisture sensitivity values, suggesting the need for more samples in highly varying roof rocks. Swelling strains of mudrocks showed that almost all of the swelling occurred in the first 24 hours after immersion. The wet/dry immersion cycling test used provides an accurate, quick and inexpensive method for estimating the moisture sensitivity of mudrocks. With this information mine operators can begin to anticipate hazardous ground and prepare appropriate roof support.

Toolbox training is often described as short, informal training conducted at a worksite by technically competent persons for the benefit of a work team. The key feature of toolbox training is the focus on a work team and what is important to that group in its workplace. Toolbox training conducted by peers can connect miners and establish the feeling that the hazard is a real threat to them. This feeling can bridge the gap between delivery of a safety message and behavioral changes that can prevent an accident. Toolbox training is a popular form of "maintenance" training that should not be used to teach a new skill. The 10- or 15-minute toolbox session is simply too short a time to teach or learn a new skill and test for skill development. However, the toolbox format is an excellent way to inform workers of changes in workplace rules, conditions, or hazards by bringing the discussion of change to the level of the work group and suggesting how a change will affect the way workers perform their jobs. Toolbox training should be structured to address a very specific hazard. That is, the hazard source should be identified and the effect of the hazard on the worker described. The temptation to discuss a safety subject in broad terms will result in an equally vague result. For instance, discussing "equipment guards" is inappropriate for a 15-minute training session. There simply is not enough time to cover all the hazards and their remedies. A more appropriate topic would be "placing guards on a conveyor return roller" or "hazards of cleaning a conveyor return roller." Each topic is concise enough to allow the trainer time to define a particular threat to the safety of miners and discuss ways to defend against that threat. The clearest way to a safe workplace is to identify hazards methodically and eliminate them. This cannot be done with sweeping, generalized training. Some best practices that will protect a worker from the hazard should be presented, and the hazard should be located at the specific worksite. Toolbox training is an opportunity for the work team to participate in learning and share experiences and knowledge, often through storytelling. Storytelling is an ancient form of passing along information in an entertaining way. It is entertaining because it draws the listener in with imagination and creativity. Stories told within work groups are a way for miners to exchange experiences in which they made mistakes that resulted in an accident or a near-miss and learned a valuable lesson. Thus, co-workers can learn from others without the pain or fear that accompanied the storyteller's learning path. To encourage these shared experiences, the people in the group must be comfortable with one another. Participation doesn't stop with listening to a near-miss story or informing the group of an unsafe work practice. Participation by sharing experiences, knowledge, and skills should lead toward action in changing the unsafe tool, practice, or machine (Wallerstein, 1992). This power to change is called empowerment. Empowered workers use toolbox training sessions to discuss a problem; direct their own knowledge, experience, and talents in the context of their work environment to solve the problem; and put into practice what they have learned by sharing (Baker, 1992). A worker is much more likely to implement changes they have contributed to creating than changes forced upon them. Toolbox training functions best when the group size is small (under 20) and composed of workers with similar job functions. While combining all workers on a shift or multiple shifts may be convenient, the level of participation will drop dramatically as group size increases and participants are less connected. Similarly, when the work group participants are from different job functions, keeping the materials relevant to the individual becomes more difficult. The role of management in the toolbox training system is to communicate among various groups so that all groups at a mine site are hearing the same message. In very small operations, combining work groups can be productive if the trainer can promote open discussions and lead the group to solutions that address the needs of all and not let one group or individual dominate the discussion. WHY USE NARRATIVE METHODS An effective communications tool is to use stories as a means of describing a hazard and its consequences. Historically, using stories to transfer knowledge between individuals of the same and different generations is well established. All good stories share the same elements required to communicate safety principles. Stories require a setting (the part of the workplace), a plot (the circumstances that lead to a hazard), the solution (best practices), the lesson (what can happen), and the result (what will be done to prevent the hazard) (Dennehy, 1999).

The Coal Mine Roof Rating (CMRR) was first presented at this Conference nine years ago. Since its introduction, the CMRR has been incorporated into many aspects of mine planning, including longwall pillar design, roof support selection, feasibility studies, and extended cut evaluation. It has also become truly international, with involvement in mine designs and funded research projects in South Africa, Canada, and Australia. The purpose of this paper is to bring the mining community up to date with recent improvements and applications of the CMRR. The most important new development is a streamlined process for determining the CMRR from exploratory drill core. Just three types of information are now required: •Fracture spacing (or RQD) •Uniaxial compressive strength (or axial Point Load Testing) •Diametral Point Load Testing The moisture sensitivity adjustment has also been changed, and new research has related the immersion test to slake durability. Most recently, the CMRR has been implemented in a computer program, which can be obtained from NIOSH free of charge. The program facilitates calculation of the CMRR from either underground or drill core data. Values from many locations can be saved in a single file, and an interface with Autocad allows CMRR contour plots to be integrated into mine planning.

A new heuristic sublevel mining stope optimizer is presented. The optimizer seeks the best locations and lengths of a series of vertical raises that, together with the blocks linked to each raise, define a mining stope. Five design constraints ? the footwall angle, the hangingwall angle, the number of raises, the maximum distance of a block from a raise, and the minimum width required to move the farthest block towards the raise ? allow the shape of the sub-stopes associated with each raise to be controlled. The optimization is done on the locations and lengths of raises using a genetic algorithm to efficiently sample the parameters? space. For each raise, a local network is defined in cylindrical coordinates around the raise such as to impose the design constraints. A maxflow algorithm on the local network is used to determine the optimal sub-stope for each raise. All substopes are combined to define the global stope for the entire deposit. The best global stope is obtained using a genetic algorithm to find the raise parameters providing the best profit over the entire deposit. Two synthetic cases and one real deposit are used to evaluate the new algorithm and compare the results with the single-raise optimizer. The multiple raises approach leads to significantly improved economics compared with the single-raise stope optimizer, and the dilution is also substantially reduced compared to the single-raise case.

Powders prepared from the algae Gracilaria secundata, Ulva lactuca and Ecklonia radiatawere shown to provide sole nutritional support for microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of low-grade manganese dioxide ore. G. secundata was the most effective bacterial nutrient giving 32 per cent recovery of Mn++, at an average rate of 63 mg Mn++/litre/day and a yield of 24 mg Mn++/g dry powder in microaerobic cultures containing 1.5 per cent (w/v)MnOz ore and 3per cent (w/v) powder over 14 days. Although G. secundata was approximately half as effective as molasses in supporting microbial decomposition ofMnOz, possible on-site growth ofthe alga could be economicaIIy more practical than transporting carbohydrate to a distant mine site.
