Mega projects present unique challenges with regard to estimating costs. With such projects, which may span decades, these challenges often begin as soon as a project is conceived. The importance of having a sound, resource based estimate avail-able early in the process cannot be overstated because it provides the basis for ongoing project decisions. For the final phase of providing an updated cost estimate, often while bidding by contractors is underway, the Engineer?s Estimate (EE) must incorporate present market conditions; account for possible volatile material price swings; be based on actual labor and fringe costs; rely on meaningful productivity rates; and accommodate any recent technology advances while identifying and allowing for risk factors. This paper explains the benefits associated with consultants adopting a contractor?s estimating approach when preparing the Engineer?s Estimate on mega projects like the various tunneling projects in New York City.

Sm-Co alloy is a kind of magnetic material with high power and has been applied in modern industry widely. In this study, the wet chemical co-precipitation was developed for synthesis of the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor. The thermodynamic analysis of the studied system was done to clarify the solution behavior theoretically based on the thermodynamic equilibrium and simultaneous equilibrium. Then, the experiments were done to address the various effects on the wet chemical process, including solution pH, reactant concentration, dispersant, reaction temperature and time, etc. It is found that by precise control of the process, the Sm-Co alloy oxide precursor was synthesized with fine crystallization and special size & size distribution.

Diferentes mecanismos podem atuar e governar a deformação plástica de uma liga metálica. Estes mecanismos são fortemente dependentes de características como composição química, estrutura cristalina e energia de falha de empilhamento. Com o objetivo de se avaliar o comportamento do aço inoxidável duplex UNS S32304 quando submetido a esforços trativos e considerando a importância desta informação durante a conformação mecânica, este trabalho estudou a influência da taxa de deformação sobre as principais propriedades mecânicas medidas no ensaio de tração. Para a realização deste estudo, corpos de prova de tração foram usinados a partir de chapas do referido aço laminado a frio com espessura final de 2,5mm. Cada conjunto de 3 corpos de prova foi submetido às taxas de deformação de 7x10-4 s-1, 7x10-3 s-1 e 4x10-2 s-1. Por meio da análise dos resultados, observou-se uma diminuição na ductilidade e um aumento no limite de escoamento com o aumento da taxa de deformação. Entretanto, o limite de resistência não variou de forma significativa nas diferentes taxas estudadas.

Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

Massive hematite ore (MHO) is a special high-grade iron ore used as lump ore in the process of obtaining direct reduced iron (DRI). The influence of porosity on the reducibility was investigated using optical and scanning electron microscopes. Hematite is the main component of the samples and occurs as granular crystals (10 ¦m), microplates (1 ¦m) and euhedral martite (10 to 30 ¦m). Quartz, maghemite, kenomagnetite and goethite are minor components. Primary micropores (+ to 1 ¦m) are associated with microplaty crystals that fill cavities between granular hematite. Secondary micropores (+ to 5 ¦m) related to euhedral martite crystals are the most important. The total porosity of weathered samples, measured using nitrogen adsorption and mercury injection, attains values up to 18 per cent, whereas unweathered samples have a porosity less than 2.5 per cent. Varajpo et al, 2002 showed that reducibility is strongly enhanced by porosity and this work shows that reducibility can be indirectly evaluated by bulk density.

High concentrations of airborne coal particles is the main reason leading to health and safety hazards in underground coalmines. Water spray is one of the effective methods to suppress coal particles in mine sites, but the use of plain water is not effective enough to capture coal particles. By adding surfactants, coal wettability can be improved which will increase the coal dust suppression efficiency. In this study, a modified sink test was employed to evaluate coal wettability in the presence of two anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Sink rates were calculated by measuring sink weight over test time. Different surfactant concentrations (0.01 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent) and two types of water (tap water and deionised water) were selected to investigate coal wettability over three size ranges (0–38, 53–75 and 75–90 µm). The results show that both SDS and SDBS surfactants can lower the water surface tension and improve coal wetting performance. Sink rates increased as the surfactant concentration increased, and surfactant solutions prepared by tap water performed better than deionised water in enhancing coal wettability. Also, coal wettability varied for different coal particle sizes; the smaller coal particles were, the worse the wettability they possessed.CITATION:Chen, Y, Xu, G, Wang, R and Albijanic, B, 2017. The dramatic increase in molybdenum prices from the low of less than $2.50/lb in 1999 to more than $40/lb in 2005 has caught the attention of molybdenum mine owners and exploration project developers. Between 2005 and early 2007, prices pulled back and stabilized within a trading range of $25/lb to $30/lb. This 1,000 percent price increase has motivated most existing producers to expand production and is motivating those with molybdenum prospects to accelerate the development process for earliest possible production. It is still unknown how much new production will come from existing mines, how much production will be needed from new mines if demand continues to grow and how many potential new mines might be available to meet future demand. And of course, the billion dollar question is whether molybdenum prices will remain high, or will they fall back to the low levels seen during the 1980s and 1990s? This article attempts to answer these questions in a way that will help molybdenum project developers and financiers plan for the future.

Oxidation of mixed lanthanide solutions with ozone at pH 4.5 and at ambient temperature resulted in precipitation of 98 percent of the original cerium present. Corresponding cerium purity was increased from 50 to 98 percent. A second ozone oxidation-precipitation step produced cerium of 99.9 percent purity in high yield from the 98-percent-pure material. Alternately, ozonation at pH 6.5 and 85° C differentially precipitated cerium and rare-earth elements heavier than cerium and left 89 percent of the original lanthanum in solution at a purity of 95 percent. Subsequent recovery of cerium from the heavier rare-earth elements in the precipitate was accomplished by dissolving the precipitate in dilute mineral acid and reoxidizing the cerium with ozone at pH 4.5 and at ambient temperature. The filtrate contained an enriched praseodymium-neodymium-samarium-europium mixture that is amenable to separation by ion exchange or solvent extraction.

UOCK bursts are a phenomenon about which insufficient is known. This l.~ statement has a twofold meaning. In the first place, far too many people, both inside and outside of the mining industry, are woefully ignorant of the whole subject, and secondly, as those who are face to face with the problem in the mines realize, our knowledge of rock bursts is inadequate. The first group embraces the general public, who have never been enlightened on the subject, and a great many geologists and engineers who have never shown more than a curiosity about it. Such technical men do not realize what a vital problem it is to our mining industries. They are usually thankful that bursting ground is not their problem, and leave it to those unfortunate enough to run into it. From such men one often hears the pious opinion that if proper mining methods were used there would be no problem. It is hoped that this paper will give these people a different viewpoint. Those in the second group deserve much credit for what they have done and are doing. They are fighting a large and difficult problem. In the pages that follow, I have tried to give a bird's-eye view of that problem, and suggest new ways in which it may be attacked.

San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) operates an underground coal mine near Farmington, New Mexico. Continuous miners and a longwall produce 7-8 million tons per year. The coal seam at SJCC has tested to have a propensity for spontaneous combustion. As such, during feasibility for this project, it was elected to utilize a bleederless ventilation system on the longwall. Three-entry gateroads are developed, and the longwall gob is sealed as mining progresses. SJCC utilizes a nitrogen injection system to continuously inertize the gob. In 2004, the mine was nearing completion of its first longwall district. The next district would contain longer panels (up to 12,500 feet). Due to the liberation of methane, and to a lesser extent hydrogen sulfide, a typical wrap-around ventilation system would not be appropriate. Not only would gas concentrations likely be challenging, but the overall ventilating pressure in the mine would have to be increased beyond limits established to mitigate the potential for spontaneous combustion. Given the above-described operating constraints, SJCC determined a need for a small ventilation shaft in the back (longwall setup area) of the next district that would draw adequate air past the longwall seals to maintain low gas levels and permit the required regulatory inspections to occur. Extensive ventilation modeling and gas desorption testing indicated that the shaft would be required to handle a volume of air ranging from 40,000 cfm to as high as 185,000 cfm. This large range is driven by the position of the longwall face with respect to the shaft and the effectiveness of the SJCC degasification program (SJCC uses vertical gob vent boreholes and horizontal in-seam methods). Ventilation simulations determined an appropriate diameter for the 350-ft-deep shaft to be 5 feet. Having determined shaft size, the next decision related to the method of shaft construction. Conventional shaft sinking was ruled out, due to the small diameter. Raise boring was an attractive option but had two drawbacks: (1) development crews would reach the bottom of the shaft just a few weeks before longwall startup, leaving a compressed timeframe to install the shaft, and (2) raiseboring requires additional underground entries to be developed to stow the project’s cuttings. While raiseboring remained a viable option, the problems associated with it led SJCC to also investigate blind drilling.

A lead-zinc-pyrite flotation middling was pressure oxidised to give residues containing iron hydroxy sulphates (a mixture of basic iron sulphate (BIS) and a hydrated iron sulphate (HIS)) and lead sulphate. Direct thiourea leaching of this residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold and silver, but thiourea consumption was high (56 kg/t) because of soluble iron(M) in the residue. Attempts were made to decrease the thiourea consumption by removing the water-soluble iron(M) or reducing it to iron(II). Water washing of the pressure oxidation residue removed most of the hydrated iron sulphate but little of the basic iron sulphate. Iron removal was only 12-20 per cent, depending on the number of washes, from one sample which was low in HIS, and 40-45 per cent in another which was high in HIS. Iron extraction was not appreciably increased by using dilute sulphuric acid (with or without additions of sodium sulphite), dilute phosphoric acid, or sodium chloride solution (150 g/L NaCI). Direct thiourea leaching of the water-washed residue gave over 90 per cent extraction of gold but only 49 per cent of silver, with a thiourea consumption of 27 kg/t. However, the application of a water wash followed by reduction of dissolved iron(III) with sodium sulphite in the presence of thiourea, and then thiourea leaching resulted in over 98 per cent extraction of gold and silver for a thiourea consumption of 26 kg/t.

"1. Belt-Drop Agglomeration Preferred at Heap Leach Operations. The agglomeration method now preferred at heap leach operations utilizes belt-drops along conveyors. Belt-drop agglomeration is being designed into numerous upcoming heap leach operations. It offers substantial capital cost savings over previously favored drum agglomerators. It has such significant operating and maintenance advantages that some drum agglomerators have been retired in favor of belt-drops.The majority of heap leach operations are now built with crushing included in the flowsheet. If crushing is included, belt-drop agglomeration can be added for almost no cost. The agglomeration equipment is simply a few conveyor transfers, designed to provide the tumbling and rolling action which forms the agglomerates. Controlled water sprays are needed at each of these agglomeration transfers. Cement or lime is added as a binder, to stabilize the agglomerates. This reagent is also needed to raise pH to safe operating levels.Addition of the pH control reagent before stacking the ore offers a reagent cost benefit. In the belt-drop mixing technique, the ore is intimately mixed with the lime (or cement). After stacking on the heaps, when the cyanide solution is sprayed onto the high-ph ore, very little cyanide is consumed. Without the pre-addition of lime or cement, the leach solution is sprayed onto neutral ore. The mixture of high-pH leach solution and neutral pH ore causes the solution pH to drop, releasing cyanide gas. This release is minor from a safety viewpoint, much less than dangerous, but the gas release is a costly waste of the cyanide reagent. Pilot-scale comparison tests were made at Pinson. Ore pre-treated with lime or cement showed 30% less cyanide consumption than untreated ore."

Laboratory experiments show that the delay detonators, either electric (copper coated or aluminium) or non-electric (down-the-hole) as generally used in opencast mines and quarries have some scattering from the actual firing time due to manufacturing inaccuracy and variations in basic ingredients of the product. This scattering varies from 1 to 4 % depending on the product quality. Due to this component scatter, adverse blasting effects like misfires, overbreak, underbreak or fly-rock may occur if the design patterns are not judiciously made. It has also direct impact on muck profile and fragmentation.

The dissolution of alumina and magnesia has been investigated using laser scanning confocal microscopy (alumina) and a rotating finger apparatus (magnesia) to assess the effects of temperature, composition and forced convection on the rate of dissolution in CaO-SiO2-Al2O3based slags. The two techniques have differing strengths and limitations, and provide complementary methods for studying dissolution. Alumina dissolution was studied for temperatures from 1477 to 1577°C. Based upon the data, the rate controlling mechanism was thought to be mass transfer control in the slag. The diffusion coefficients for the alumina particles are estimated to be in the range 10-11to 10-10m2.s. MgO degradation for sample rotation speeds of 50 to 800 rpm at 1500 and 1530°C was studied for both congruent and incongruent dissolution. The results show that the rate of dissolution for this is primarily controlled by a diffusion mass transfer mechanism for congruent dissolution except at the highest rotation speed. For incongruent dissolution, the mechanism is much more complex, with the morphology and distribution of the spinel reaction product having a significant effect. At high speeds and prolonged times, mechanical forces played a major role in the degradation process. THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook contains injury experience and related employment information for the coal-mining, coking, oil and gas, peat, and native asphalt industries in the United States for 1963. No attempt has been made to combine these data and present injury-frequency rates reflecting the mineral-fuel industries because the hazards of the separate industries are not comparable. Tabulations showing the trend of injuries and employment for all mineral industries are presented in Volume III of the Minerals Yearbook. COAL Injury experience of the coal-mining industry was improved slightly in 1963, as measured by the 2-percent decline in the Injury-frequency rate. Although the total number of fatal and nonfatal injuries increased 1 percent, the greater proportional increase of 3 percent in man-hours worked accounted for the improved frequency rate. Employment and injury data for 1963 are based on final data for anthracite mines and preliminary data for bituminous coal and lignite mines.

BACKGROUND The history of the Pine Point Mine is a rich one. This property once boasted one of the largest and most profitable lead-zinc mines in Canada's long and storied mining history. The Pine Point mine used open pit technology to extract the ore, but they faced several challenges. In addition to logistics problems with haul distances and metal prices, the mine faced the challenge of a large in flow of water from the Great Slave Lake. Eventually, the Pine Point Mine was closed leaving behind a large deposit of lead-zinc ore. Following the closing of the Pint Point Mine, Tamerlane Ventures Inc. acquired this property which includes approximately 70 million tonnes of lead-zinc reserves. The initial phase of this project will concentrate on the R-190 deposit as a test site to prove their new approach for extracting the ore. The R-190 reserve is believed to have approximately 1,014,000 million tonnes of high grade ore varying from 5% to 52% combined lead-zinc. Once the pilot project proves the approach is valid, the process will be repeated in approximately 33 other ore bodies on the property. This paper is written to discuss the design process to determine the most effective means of placing production and service equipment in the same shaft. Currently the design work and the mining scheme is complete, but lead-zinc pricing has prevented Tamerlane Ventures Inc. from moving forward with the project.
