AS every school boy knows, the Andes mountain range forms the backbone of South America, extending the full length of the continent along its western edge and fairly close to the Pacific coast. But in Colombia these mountains are divided into three distinct ranges known as the Western, Central and Eastern ranges of the Andes. United at the southern end, they spread out like three fingers in a northerly direction across the Republic of Colombia. These great natural barriers have only in recent years been tarried by railroads or wagon roads, and they have had their effect upon the history of the country, both political and ethnological. The importance of optimizing equipment replacement decisions becomes more critical each year due to the rising costs of buying new equipment versus maintaining old equipment. Replacing equipment when it is physically worn out, or replacing it too soon or too late relative to its Economic Life (when it is economically worn out), is very costly. After extensive literature review and research, Kennecott has developed its Equipment Replacement Guide (ERG) system which identifies, evaluates, and justifies the replacement of uneconomical equipment. The system considers such critical factors as inflation, decreasing work capability, increasing maintenance/repair and operating costs, taxes, time value of money, return on investment, salvage value, and investment tax credit. These factors are used in a system of equations which balance the costs of new equipment against the total operating costs of old equipment. The solution of the equations determines the Economic Life of equipment. Replacement of equipment at the determined Economic Life will earn the specified, required return on investment that is used in the calculation of the Economic Life.

X-ray Computed Tomography (CT) is a nondestructive imaging technique, and its efficiency is widely recognized. In the present paper, X-ray CT is successfully applied for the visualization of water permeation process in rock. A new experimental technique using a tracer, which mainly consists of Potassium Iodide (KI), is proposed, together with the analysis method of the velocity field. The permeation process and the velocity field in rock are concretely visualized and analyzed by considering the conservation of mass of the tracers. La tomographie calculée aux rayons X est une technique de la prise d'images non-destructive et son efficacité est largement reconnue. Dans le présent exposé, la tomographie calculée aux rayons X Radio est appliquée avec succès à la visualisation du procédé de perméation de l'eau dans la roche. Une nouvelle technique expérimentale, se servant d'un identificateur principalement constitué d'iodure de potassium (KI), est proposée avec la méthode de l'analyse du champ des vitesse. Le procédé de perméation et le champ des vitesse dans la roche sont visualisés concrètement et analysés en considérant la conservation de masse des identificateurs. Röntgen-Computer-Tomografie (CT) ist eine nicht-destruktive Bildverarbeitungstechnik, deren Effizienz weit anerkannt ist. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird Röntgen-CT erfolgreich für die visuelle Darstellung des Wasser-Durchdringungsvorgangs im Fels eingesetzt. Eine neue experimentelle Technit mit einem Tracer, der hauptsächlich aus Kaliumiodid (KI) besteht, wird vorgeschlagen, zusammen mit der Analysemethode des Geschwindigkeitsfelds. Der Durchdringungsprozess und das Geschwindigkeitsfeld im Fels werden konkret visualisiert und analysiert, wobei die Bewahrung der Masse des Tracers berücksichtigt wird.

"(Figure 1) Reagentized pulp enters into the column at about 1/4 of the distance from the top. Inside the column it meets with a downward flowing stream of water and with an upward flowing mass of air bubbles. Flotation takes place in this counter current system while at the same time fine gangue particles are washed off the froth before it reaches the overflow lip at the top of the column. The main operating features of the column flotation are as follows:a) No moving parts. Solids are kept in suspention not by an agitating action of a propeller but by settling down against the rising air bubbles.b) Wash water. Spray pipes are installed a few inches below the froth surface and deliver required volume of water. The purpose of this water is twofold:(i) it keeps in balance the flow of material through the column and(ii) it washes rising froth in the froth layer as well as removes unwanted fines attached to the bubbles at the lower flotation section. As a result the concentrate produced is of higher purity than in the conventional flotation. Column is characterized by very high up-grading. However, even temporary disruption of wash water supply results in a drastic drop of concentrate grate.c) Flow balance. (Figure 2) For the correct operation volume of the underflow (tail) is larger than that of the feed. The difference is made up by the wash water. This difference called bias is predetermined and ranges from some 4 to 15 USGPM depending on the size of the unit and process requirements."

The paper highlights the experimental investigations to characterize texture and plastic strain ratio r-Bar in auto grade steel sheets by ultrasonic measurements, whereas attempts were made to characterize interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties in prestressed concrete wires by eddy current measurements. Good correlations were obtained between the testing parameters (such as ultrasonic attenuation and velocity in case of steel sheets as well as eddy current out put voltage and phase angle in case of steel wires) and the materials properties (such as texture, plastic strain ratio r-Bar, interlamellar spacings in pearlite, tensile stresses and torsional properties). 15 MHz normal direct contact and 20 MHz delay line normal shear wave probes were used for ultrasonic measurements. Eddy current measurements were done using an absolute coil probe with variable frequency selection. The experimental results show the possibility of nondestructive on line measurement of the above microstructures and properties.

In view of high demand in various types of ferro-alloys, it has become necessary to produce the same efficiently, safely and cost-effectively with consistent quality maintaining the anti-pollution norms. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to adopt latest process/equipment with the state-of-the-art instrumentation and automation system. A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) based automation system with suitable Human Machine Interface(HMI) terminals along with intelligent field mounted sensing/control devices allows to monitor and control the complete plant effectively with optimum deployment of man-power. In association with this, use of process optimization controllers enables to achieve specialised functionalities of the submerged arc furnaces like material management, lining management, electrode management, power management, overall production management etc.

A magnetic anisotropy sensor is used for nondestructive measurement of stress on surfaces of a ferromagnetic material, such as steel. The sensor is built on the principle of the magneto-strictive effect in which changes in magnetic permeability due to deformation of the material is measured in a nondestructive manner, which then can be translated into the absolute values of stresses existing on the surface. This technique was applied to measure stresses of H-beams used in tunnels. The results show that this method could be one of the promising technologies for non-destructive stress measurement for safe construction of underground structures. Une sonde magnétique anisotropique est utilisée pour des mesures non-destructives de stress sur la surface d' unmétal ferromagnétique, comme l'acier. La sonde est construite sur le principe de l'effet magnéto-strictif dans lequel les changements dans la perméabilité magnétique due à la déformation du metal est mesurée avec une manière non-destructive, qui peut être alors traduite en valeurs absolues des stress existants à la surface. Cette technique a été appliquée pour la mesure de stress des poutres en H utilisées dans les tunnels. Les résultats montrent que cette méthode peut être l'une des technologies promet tantes concernant les mesures non-destructives de stress pour des constructions sûres de strcutures souterraines. Ein magnetischer Anisotropie-Sensor wird für die zerstörungsfreie Messung von Spannungen an Oberflächenvon ferromagnetischen Materialien wie z.B. Stahl verwendet. Der Sensor kann Änderungen in der magnetischen Durchlässigkeit auf Grund von Verformungen des Materials erkennen, die dann in Absolutwerte der Spannungen an der Oberfläche umgerechnet werden können. Die Methode wurde auf Messung von Spannungenvon H-Balken in Tunnels angewendet. Ergebnisse zeigen, dass dies eine vielversprechende Methode für diezerstörungefreie Messung im Tiefbau ist.

Catastrophic failures of dams and tailing storage facilities (TSF) have triggered the development of integrated ground monitoring concepts for hazard assessment, risk management and public safety. These concepts are based on knowledge and expertise of persons technically responsible for TSF. The aim is to combine this implicit and explicit knowledge with the data of in-situ- and remote sensors. Risk management for TSF must include a comprehensive monitoring program that integrates data from ground based-, air-borneand satellite-based sensors. Researchers at Technical University Georg Agricola (THGA) in Bochum, and EFTAS, Muenster, Germany, are fusing a variety of sensor data to enhance the capability and performance of TSF monitoring to ensure public safety downstream of TSFs. This paper describes the variety of sensors implemented in numerous research projects. It gives an outlook in terms of planned satellite missions with innovative equipment like hyperspectral sensors. The implementation of the data of these sensors in the analysis will increase the understanding of spatio-temporal impacts of mining activities. Future opportunities are explained by a datacube approach.

"Economic returns for the copper industry have been assessed by building cash flow models for each of the 100 new mines brought into production over the past 20 years. Ninety-one of the 100 new mines returned the assumed 8% cost of capital and generated a positive net present value (NPV) at the development decision point. Economic criteria for individual mines are highly variable with NPV ranging from -$111 million (-$111M) to +$3850M (all money values are presented in United States dollars) and internal rate of return (IRR) ranging from -8% to +95%. The copper industry collectively would generate approximately $39 billion dollars in NPV through the development of the 100 new mines.The returns to exploration ($174M per deposit) were measured by deducting the cost of exploration per deposit ($221M) from the returns to development per deposit ($395M). Overall, the copper business has provided positive returns to exploration. However, the variability in returns across deposits means that only 41 of the 100 new mines can carry the average cost of exploration. The long lead times and high costs associated with exploration result in only those deposits with large amounts of contained copper being able to cover the average finding cost of the industry.The returns to development and exploration are shown to be highly sensitive to the cost of capital and metal price assumptions. With respect to deposit type, porphyry deposits are both larger (NPV) and exhibit lower profitability (IRR) than the nonporphyry deposits. On a geographic basis, returns to development and exploration are higher in Chile than elsewhere, reflecting the larger average deposit size and lower average exploration cost per deposit."

In any construction project involving explosives, care must be taken to protect workers from carbon monoxide (CO) generated by blasting operations. CO is an odorless, colorless gas that can cause illness and death by asphyxiation. In general, the first symptoms include headache, fatigue and lightheadedness. At higher exposures to CO, skin flushing, rapid heart rate, and lowered blood pressure occur. At ever, higher exposure levels, decreased attention span is followed by nausea, vomiting, unpaired coordination, fainting, coma, convulsions and, finally, death. The detonation of explosives in blasting operations generates a range of toxic fumes, but CO is the most insidious because it is colorless, odor less, and is long lasting, since it is not readily removed try reaction with ground water, soil or rock. Additionally CO is generated in relatively large quantities compared to other toxic: fumes. CO may continue to seep out of blasted material long after the odor commonly associated with detonated explosives has dissipated. It is never safe to assume as confined space in the vicinity of a blast is clear of toxic fumes. CO may be present even if the area looks Clear and many hours have passed since the last blast.

The upper part of the "Contatto Ovest" orebody, at the San Giovanni Pb-Zn sulphur mine (Sardinia, Italy), is mined by a sublevel caving method. With increasing mining depth, a progressive caving of the hanging wall and discontinuous subsidence occurs. The orebody, which is located very close to the contact between the Cambrian limestones and the Silurian shales, strikes NE-SW for more than 100 m and dips 75-80' NW. The limestone footwall is massive and strong while the hanging-wall consists of very weak shales. The mine considered is located near a town so that the observed subsidence effects must be taken into account for both stability of the nearby railway and houses and morphological and environmental impact. A limiting equilibrium analysis to predict the progress of hanging wall failure with increasing mining depth was used. A suitable computer program was developed for solving the model by a iterative procedure. The progressive hanging wall caving and its consequent superficial effects were predicted perfectly by means of the computer program used and later confirmed by a geophysical test (seismic tomography). Our study ends with a further analysis, carried out using the same procedure, which allows to have a different geometrical situation with the presence of a pillar to protect the mill area.

An overview is given of the matte melting process used for the beneficiation of South African Platinum Group Metal (PGM) ores. Most producers use six-electrode furnaces to melt the concentrate and Pierce Smith converters to oxidize excess iron sulphide from the furnace matte. Concentrates from two reef-types (the so-called Merensky and UG-2 reefs) dominate the feedstock supply. Concentrate from the Merensky reef is low in chromium and do not pose significant melting problems. Concentrates from the UG-2 reef contain much higher levels of chromium, which results in the formation of chromium-rich spinels during melting. This is attributed to the low solubility of chromium in furnace slag under typical operating conditions (an oxygen partial pressure of 10-8-10-9bar at temperatures of 1550°C to 1600°C). During the converting process care is needed to avoid excessively oxidizing conditions, which result in cobalt, nickel and copper losses to the slag. High nickel losses result in the formation ofFe2NiO4(trevorite), which often forms solid solutions with FeCr2O4and Fe3O4. In future, the main challenge in the processing of South African PGM ores will be to cope with ever increasing levels of chromium in the concentrate. A short-term solution to the problem would be to melt the concentrate under slightly reducing conditions to promote the formation of CrO, which is more soluble in the slag than Cr2O3. A longer-term solution to the problem would be to abandon the current matte-smelting process in favour of an alloy-based process, which would offer total flexibility with respect to the amount of chromium that can be tolerated in the feed. Construction of the drilled shafts for the Brightman Street Bridge Replacement Project were not only challenging due to working over the water but were also challenged by changed soil conditions, concurrent work being performed by an adjacent contractor on the same project, environmental restrictions and severe winter conditions. A total of 36 x 8 feet diameter drilled shafts with 7.5 feet rock sockets were installed for the East and West bascule piers. This project also included Osterberg Cell load testing on two production drilled shafts at each the East and West bascule piers. The results from the load test program were used to fine tune the design of the drilled shaft rock sockets. From a constructability standpoint the reverse circulation drilling method with a pile top drill rig proved to be an excellent choice for drilling the overburden and rock sockets of the large diameter deep drilled shafts.

The MINER Act of 2006 mandated that all underground coal mines must install and maintain refuge chambers. Refuge chambers serve as a temporary shelter in case of emergency. Several factors affect the performance of a refuge chamber: heat production inside the chamber and introduction of CO when chamber doors are opened are two major factors. This study examines the CO purging process and to determine total air quantity and time necessary to lower the CO con-centration to safe levels for different inlet/outlet configurations using three-dimensional simulation technique. The study uses Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes and continuity equations along with the spe-cies transport model assuming uniform air mixing. The heat transfer of any kind is neglected and the purging process is assumed to take place isothermally. The standard k-e model is utilized for simulating turbulence in the flow field. The measurement of ferrosilicon rheology and characterisation of the parameters that have a direct influence on medium rheology provide the basis for evaluating, comparing and selecting an appropriate size and shape of medium to maximise separation efficiency in a dense medium application. The role of medium viscosity on particle separation in both static and dynamic separators is illustrated using relevant theory. The primary measurements of rheology are medium viscosity and stability. These in turn are determined by particle size, particle density and particle shape which in turn can be quantified. Additional characterisation parameters are also discussed. Different areas of application where ferrosilicon characterisation can be used are also discussed.CITATION:Bosman, J and Blair, W, 2017. The evolution of sustainable development in mining is recognized as a key contributor to sustainable development (SD), which is defined as the ability of current generations to meet their needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs (Brundtland, 1987). This includes, in equal parts, social, economic and environmental impacts ? triple bottom line (Munashinge and Shearer, 1995). Alternately, sustainability has been defined in relation to social, natural, human, physical and financial capital. Our way of life relies significantly on the materials provided by mining, while mining activity affects the triple bottom-line or the five capitals. The mining community and its professionals have come to realize the importance of engaging all stakeholders in the discussion on sustainability. SME, as the leading professional mining organization, has been involved in these discussions. The society has various initiatives in sustainable development for members and stakeholders. The objective of this article is to: provide historical context for current trends in mining and SD and share SME sustainability initiatives ? their goals and rationales ? with the broader mining community. This article is timely because the past year saw two landmark forums on sustainable development: Rio+20 ? the 20th meeting of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, and MMSD +10, the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development project 10 years on. Furthermore, this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Milos Declaration on the minerals professional?s responsibilities in achieving sustainable development, forums in which SME was involved.

Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.
