El presente trabajo plantea un proceso para minimizar el contenido de bismuto en las celdas de electrorefinación, a través de la adición de carbonato de bario a la solución electrolito, de forma que el bismuto soluble presente en fase líquida, se precipite sobre la superficie del precipitado insoluble de BaSO4, bajo una coprecipitación por adsorción e intercambio debido al equilibrio dinámico entre el precipitado y la solución de electrolito conteniendo al bismuto. En este sentido, se reduce la presencia del bismuto en el electrolito de cobre en un 75%, adicionalmente se tiene la disminución del contenido de plomo en un 96%, de estaño en 48% y de plata en un 18% aproximadamente.

In modern steel continuous casting technologies mould fluxes are well-known to assure lubrication required by tribological system of mould-solidifying strand shell, and to provide crystalline phase solid film, contributing to control heat extraction between strand and mould wall. Actual cooling rates during normal continuous casting mould operations are far higher than critical cooling rate of the liquid slag. Indeed, DTA measurements point out that even relatively small cooling rates of 30?50 K/min are high enough to give exiguous formation of crystals. In this paper, contribution of devitrification in defining crystalline phase formation of industrial basic mould slag, used in continuous casting of crack-sensitive steel grades, has been investigated by means of non-isothermal experiments study. Devitrification has proved to play a major role in mould flux crystallization in a working environment explaining the higher amount of crystalline phase formed in plant sample in comparison with lab sample from DTA analysis with typical cooling rate of 5?20 K/min. The amount of crystalline phases formed ranks as follow: Cuspidine > Combeite > Gehlenite. Kinetic analysis of DTA non-isothermal experiments has provided kinetic parameters through Kissinger and Ozawa methods, as Avrami constant resulting to be n ?2 and activation energy of Cuspidine crystallization resulting to be EC= 315 kJ/mole. The effect of addition to the parent material of oxides as MnO, TiO2, ZrO2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3near to saturation point has proved to affect, in certain cases, crystallization behaviour of mold flux. In particular, MnO, TiO2, ZrO2oxides produce a relevant dump of crystallization of Combeite and Gehlenite phases, while Al2O3and Fe2O3do not appreciably affect crystallization. MSHA has promulgated a rule to limit the exposure of underground metal/nonmetal miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). In May 2008, the final personal exposure limit will be lowered to 160 µg/m3 total carbon. To comply with this rule, mine operators are implementing a variety of control technologies. In this study two types of control technologies (ventilation and cabs) which are being implemented in limestone mines were investigated. Two stone mines in this study use large diameter propeller fans for main mine ventilation and direct the air to the faces using auxiliary fans, stoppings, and long pillars while bypassing the old mine workings. NIOSH measured for sub-micrometer elemental carbon (EC) using SKC DPM cassettes (analyzed using NIOSH 5040) and a near real time instrument. With the present ventilation and the number and type of vehicles used, the concentration of EC from DPM at the working areas was at or below 400 µg/m3 for both mines and about 166 µg/m3 and 251 µg/m3 at the returns. The real time data showed that the ventilation was reaching the working areas and effectively diluting the DPM. Environmental cabs were also used to reduce DPM exposures in three underground limestone mines. Using NIOSH method 5040 and near real time EC instrumentation, NIOSH sampled inside and outside of a loader cab at one of these limestone mines to determine the effectiveness of the cab. The cab was found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM as long as the cab system was properly maintained, and doors and windows were closed.

The rare-earth metals or lanthanides were divided into three categories by Berzelius. The cerium subgroup is comprised of 57lanthanum, 58cerium, 59praseodymium, 60neodymium, and 62samarium. 61Promethium does not occur naturally. The terbium subgroup includes 63europium, 64gadolinium, and 65terbium. The remaining lanthanides are placed in the yttrium subgroup. Strictly speaking, yttrium is not a rare earth. Because the properties of yttrium resemble those of heavy rare earths, its name has been used as a designating adjective. The yttrium subgroup includes 66dysprosium, 67holmium, 68erbium, 69thulium, 70ytterbium, and 67lutetium. Rare-earth elements, especially those of the same subgroup, tend to occur together rather than in discrete minerals.

This Bureau of Mines publication reviews 237 papery on radiometric prospecting, which is the measurement of naturally occurring radioactivity in the earth's surface and its application to petroleum and natural gas exploration. Many theories and documented surveys are listed in both support and refutation of this reported phenomenon, and the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to obtain direct field information in order to determine the statistical credibility of a radiometric method of predicting petroleum accumulation.

A series of laboratory evaluations examined the impact of water spray pressure, curtain setback distance, and external and underboom spray use for controlling respirable dust levels and sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas concentrations around a continuous mining machine. This mining machine was equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber and was positioned in the box or slab cut. Exhaust line brattice was used for all tests. Dust levels were measured in the return airway and at locations representing the operators of the continuous mining machine and the standard and off-standard shuttle cars. Increasing water pressure or using the underboom sprays produced no significant impacts on dust levels, although their interactions did produce some significant impacts. Increasing curtain setback distance often elevated dust levels, likely by reducing the amount of airflow reaching the face. Use of the external sprays created additional airflow around the mining machine that pushed the dust cloud past the scrubber inlets. This significantly increased dust levels at all sampling locations. Tracer gas levels were measured on the off-curtain and curtain sides of the cutter head and in the return airway. Increasing water pressure generally led to significantly increased gas levels on the curtain side, although a slight decrease was observed on the off-curtain side with the machine in the box cut. Increasing setback distance elevated gas levels on both sides of the cutter head and in the return by limiting the quantity of ventilation airflow reaching the face. Use of the external sprays provided additional airflow along the off-curtain side of the machine, significantly reducing gas levels in this region. These sprays adversely impacted the dilution and removal of gas on the curtain side of the cutter head. Use of the underboom sprays adversely impacted gas levels on both sides of the cutter head. Use of the external sprays provided the best control of respirable dust and face gas concentrations. The smaller increases in miner operator dust levels produced by these sprays were offset by larger reductions in face gas levels on the off-curtain side of the cutter head. Although the underboom sprays minimally impacted respirable dust levels, use of these sprays was not recommended because they increased face gas levels.

More and more, general contractors, site supervisors, owner re p resentatives, or the owners themselves want to know details about proposed drill and blast operations at their site, in advance. We are seeing more contracts that re q u i re a blasting plan to be submitted in writing. The purpose of this session is to discuss items that you might want to include and address in a written blast plan, and some ideas about how to present them. This is not intended to be a complete list of items that could be included in a blast plan. Contracts may list specific items that need to be addressed. Only a few of the more common elements will be covered here. The bro a der purpose of this discussion is to get you thinking, about what you might want to include in your own “standard ” blast plan.

Haile Gold Mine is located near Kershaw, South Carolina, approximately 50 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Gold was first discovered at the site in 1827, and the property has been through several operating periods since. The relatively low grade and refractory nature of the deposit has been a challenge for efficient processing since the start of mining on the property. Early processing techniques included gravity separation and barrel chlorination. The last operation employed heap leaching in 1985 through 1992. After being closed and reclaimed for over 20 years, the property is poised to re-open and produce once again. In this chapter of the Mine?s legacy, flotation and ultra-fine grinding will be employed to achieve economic extraction of gold and silver from the pyrite. This paper briefly reviews some of the mine?s history, the metallurgical testing, the flowsheet and discusses design considerations. Inspection of boreholes prior to blasting can result in cost reductions as well as increases in efficiency and safety. Until recently, borehole inspection was performed in two manners. For simple inspections, a flashlight was used to view the upper part of the hole. More thorough inspections were performed with long tool strings developed for oil field applications. Borehole inspection tools developed specifically for mining and blasting applications have now been developed. Video Cameras developed for borehole inspection have been in service for several years. Now measurement tools are available, developed specifically for mining.

The lignite resource in the southern part of the South Island is New ZealandÆs largest source of indigenous primary energy. The ten deposits evaluated by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board (LFTB) have a total recoverable reserve of 6.2 billion tones equivalent to 74 000 PJ of energy or 20 times the original energy content of the Maui gas field. Updating the economics of the original LFTB studies indicates that lignite could be mined for between NZ$1.0 and 3.0/GJ. Its conversion to synthesis gas for production of petroleum products, chemical methanol, ammonia/urea fertiliser or electricity would be in the national benefit and likely to be commercially economic at todayÆs product prices.

High tensile thick plates (>80mm, weight ~3000 Kg) of medium carbon low alloy steel, when heat treated, manifested higher percentage of crystalline area (>20%) in fractured surface. Such problem was not encountered in thinner plates. The genesis of higher crystallinity in fracture was examined. It was observed that the thicker plate undergone slower rate (Average 0.9oC/Sec.) from soaking temperature to Ms temperature) of cooling after austenising during oil quenching and thereby quenched microstructure had upper bainites. During tempering of as quenched bainite, additional precipitation took place at the lath boundaries of bainite. This led to weakening of grain boundaries and aided easy crack propagation during fracture and resulted in formation of higher percentage of crystalline area in fractured surface. Enhancement in cooling rate (Average 1.8oC/Sec. from soaking temperature to Ms temperature) of austenised plate by switching over from oil quenching to water quenching practice resulted in complete transformation of austenite into martensite and produced ductile fracture (zero Crystallinity). Plates conformed improvement in mechanical properties between 2-5%.

For aluminum, substitution of primary with secondary resources decreases energy consumption; this energy advantage creates a strong economic incentive to recycle. Several authors have raised concerns that the current sinks for secondary materials may soon be saturated, impeding subsequent expansion of recycling. This work combines dynamic material flow analysis with optimal batch planning models to quantify the significance and drivers of these pending limits under several scenarios, and thereby explore potential opportunities to increase recycling. An aluminum recycling system case was developed that includes containers and packaging, automotive, and construction products and scraps. The impacts on aggregate scrap utilization and materials cost are explored in the context of changing alloy demand and lifetime. Insights drawn from this specific case study could be applied to multi-stakeholder, systemic models.

To those concerned in attaining greater safety to life and incidentally to property in coal mining, the meeting of representatives of the national mine safety research organiza¬ tions of the principal coal-producing countries, which was called by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain at its experimental station near Buxton, should have deep significance. It is notable, first, because it meant the friendly cooperation of countries not many years ago engaged on either side in the great World War; and second, because of the remarkable degree of agreement in the essential fundamental factors and methods of attaining greater safety in coal mines when it is considered that the questions were approached by different paths and that the applications dealt with widely differing natural conditions and national points of view. Varying views, of course, were held as to the relative importance of certain factors, but the differences were of detail rather than of principle. When the meeting adjourned it was unanimously agreed that such meetings should be continued annually and that the greatest benefit was to be derived by close cooperation in the exchange of data. Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, and the United States were represented by one or several members of the respective national research organization. It is of interest to note that this research work in Belgium, France, and Germany is supported directly by na¬ tional organizations of mine operators or owners but placed under a scientist appointed by the respective Government, thus giving the work official standing. In Great Britain the work is carried on by a Government board, consisting of persons connected with the coal¬ mining industry or in mining research, appointed by the Secretary for Mines, to direct the work of research of the Mines Department. It does not, however, come under its inspection service. Its work is supported by a penny-a-ton tax on output of coal. In the United States the mine-safety research work is directly supported by the Federal Government.

Long-term production scheduling optimization has been a challenging issue for the mining industry because of the size and complexity of the problem. The current planning algorithms have limitations in terms of addressing the stochastic variables underlying the mine planning problem. In this paper, an intelligent agent-based mine planning framework based on reinforcement learning is introduced. The long-term mine planning is modelled as a dynamic decision network. The intelligent agent interacts with the block model by means of a stochastic simulation and employs a Q-learning algorithm to learn the sequence of pushbacks that maximizes the net present value of the mining operation. The intelligent open pit simulator (IOPS) was implemented with an object-oriented design in Java®. A comparative application case study was carried out to verify and validate the models. The proposed method was used in planning an iron ore deposit and the results were compared to the Milawa scheduler used in Whittle® software. The outcome of the study demonstrates that the intelligent agent framework provides a powerful basis for addressing real-size open pit mine planning problems.

The presented methodology allows the determination of the response of laterally loaded battered long piles in sandy soils based on the soil-pile interaction. The Strain Wedge (SW) model which was originally developed for laterally loaded vertical piles is modified to assess the behavior of laterally loaded battered piles with the consideration of soil and pile properties. The method predicts the pile-head response and associated p-y curves. The presented soil-pile model accounts for the variation of the direction and magnitude of the batter angles from the vertical position. Unlike current practice, the proposed technique also provides the p-y curves for battered piles in sandy soils based on soil and pile properties (i.e., sand relative density, friction angle, pile geometry, etc.). The proposed methodology has been validated through a number of comparisons with full/model-scale pile load tests. INTRODUCTION The influence of pile battering on the lateral response of piles is rarely studied in the literature. Over the last decades and as suggested by Kubo (1962) and Zhang et al. (1999), a p-y multiplier is applied to predict the response of laterally loaded battered piles from an equivalent vertical one. Several researchers conducted model-scale piles load tests to understand the behavior of battered piles subjected to lateral load (Juvekar and Pise 2008; Meyerhof and Ranjan 1973; Meyerhof and Yalcin 1994). However, such tests were conducted on model piles with diameters less than 30 mm which may not have reflected actual soil-pile interaction. Battered piles are generally categorized as positive or negative battered piles according to the angle of pile installation as shown in Fig. 1. From the small-scaled and numerical models of battered piles, it was found that the lateral capacity of negative battered piles is larger than that of vertical ones. On the other hand, the positive battered piles have lower lateral capacity when compared to vertical piles (Fan-ren and Ji-Ming 2011; Juvekar and Pise 2008; Manoppo 2010; Reese et al. 2004; and Reese and Van Impe 2011).

There currently exists no viable means of obtaining continuous, quantified feedback on blast efficiency. This paper describes the adaptation of a loading shovel to serve as a diagnostic tool in evaluating the success of ground preparation practices. Work undertaken in a large western Canadian open pit involved microprocessor-based instrumentation for the performance monitoring of an electric mining shovel. The monitored shovel responses proved to be reliable indicators of variations in muckpile d&ability. This approach is considered to provide a very comprehensive survey of post blast conditions since the shovel must physically interact which every cubic yard of blast fragmentation.

With increasing depth of coal mining in China, the number of coal and gas outbursts has been increasing for years. By means of destressing the protective seam, the gas in the protected seam is drained to reduce gas concentration in the high gassy seams, thus ultimately attaining simultaneous extraction of coal and gas. Base on the simulated material scale modeling and numerical simulation, the protective seam mining method was practiced at No. 8 coal mine in Pingdingshan city. After extracting the No. 15 seam, the overlying strata movement and the deformation of No. 9-10 protected seam were studied. The experiments showed that it was feasible to destress the protected seams with large interburden thickness. As the protective seam was being mined, the protected seam experienced dynamic movement process and the change in vertical stress in the No. 9-10 seam assumed ?W? shape. When the face had advanced 656 ft (200m) from the setup room, the No. 9-10 seam was fully destressed, resulting in easy gas drainage in the destressed zone. Recommendations on mining sequence of multiple seams mining in the Pingdingshan coal areas were made.
