"Electrodeposition of Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni alloys from aqueous solutions is one of the well-known examples of anomalous codeposition in which less noble metal deposits preferentially. In this paper, the electrodeposition behavior of these alloy systems was compared between the methanol and aqueous baths. In Fe-Ni system, the significant suppression of the deposition rate of more noble Ni was observed over a wide range of electrolysis conditions in both methanol and aqueous baths. However, the electrodeposition of Zn-Ni alloys showed the typical feature of normal type codeposition in the methanol baths, which was completely different from that in aqueous sulfate baths. The difference in the electrodeposition mechanism between Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni alloys was discussed on the basis of the alloy deposition behavior in the baths in which the activity of water was varied:INTRODUCTION'It has been well known that Fe-Ni alloys show an excellent soft magnetic property. Therefore, thin films of this alloy have been used to fabricate the'-various magnetic devices. For the production of Fe-Ni thin films, dry processes such as sputtering, PVD and CVD are 'employed frequently and the resulting films showed a preferable property as a magnetic material. Electrolyses as a production technique of thin films, on the other hand, has the advantage over other processes in its cheaper production cost due to the simplicity of the production unit The Zn-iron-group metal alloys such as Zn-Ni and Zn-Fe electrodeposited on a steel sheet ale known to exhibit excellent corrosion resistance and therefore the electrodeposition of these, alloys has been applied to the production of surface treated steel sheets mainly for automotive body panels.According to Brenner (1), the electrodeposition behavior of Fe-Ni and Zn-Ni alloys was' classified into the' 'anomalous type. In this type of codeposition, less noble metal, i.e. Fe for Fe-Ni and Zn for Zn-Ni system, deposits preferentially and the change in -the alloy composition- with the variation of electrolysis conditions was unpredictable because of their obscure deposition mechanism. Since most properties of the alloys mainly depend on their composition, the composition of the deposited' alloys must be controlled strictly. According to this mechanism, it can be predicted that the codeposition behavior depends greatly on the characteristic of water solvent in this study, using methanol as a solvent, the electrodeposition behavior of the anomalous codeposition was investigated to discuss the validity of the hydroxide suppression mechanism."

The process for desulfurizing coke oven gas in a regenerative system ?scrubber-stripper?, with sour gas being fed to Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU) and tail gas being recycled to raw coke gas scrubber, has been developed. A key problem of this process is the presence of elemental sulfur in the SRU off-gas, which may deposit on gas-blowing equipment, thus disrupting its operation. A new treatment technology for SRU off-gas that has been worked out for a Claus unit operated by «Russian Metallurgical Company» (RMC) in Magnitogorsk (Russia) is presented. It incorporates a catalytic hydrolysis/hydrogenation stage, where all sulfur-bearing species such as sulfur dioxide, carbonyl sulfide and elemental sulfur are converted to hydrogen sulfide. The SRU in Magnitogorsk comprises three main units: gas re-heater; catalytic hydrolysis reactor and waste gas cooler. Re-heater is required to increase temperature of the process gas up to a level of catalytic conversion (beyond 330-3500C). Oxygen utilized as an oxidizing agent reduces the volume of waste gas to a minimal possible value. The operational data garnered since 16.07.2004 clearly shows that the new technology allows high-level purification of Claus tail gas from elemental sulfur. Unlike SCOT ? process, this technology does not require separate stages for H2S removal and enrichment that tangibly simplifies its implementation at lower capital and operation expenditures.

Gas handling at Magma Copper company's, San Manuel smelter receives process gas from a flash .smelting furnace and four copper converters. The major gas handling equip11lent consists of four electrostatic precipitators and a sulfuric acid plant. Process ,vessels in gas handling are, typically confined, spaces. Lethal gases, mechanical and chemical hazards, and the difficulty of rescue, should an accident occur, makes this area a must in the safety plan. The presence': of hazardous chemicals and explosive gases in process' vessels and piping are of major concern when repairs' are required. Proper job procedures are critical to prevent injury during repairs. This includes plant employees and contractors who are likely to be unfamiliar with the hazards ,involved. The safe operation of a gas handling operation must include the functions of operations employees on a daily basis. This includes a safe working environment and involvement of all employees in the safety program. If an injury does occur quick medical response is critical to prevent serious injury. Medical responders must be adequately trained and prepared to treat the injured person without becoming victims' themselves. The methods used at Magma Copper Company to deal with these safety problems are the focus of this presentation.

The aluminium matrix composites with ceramic dispersoids can be separated by density difference concept. In the proposed work composite scrap is recycled using an oil fired furnace. The scrap is melted in the furnace and temperature is maintained below 740 degree centigrade. Because of the density difference the lighter dispersoids will float and heavier dispersoids will settle down. The clean melt is separated be removing the floating and settled disperssoils, and then filtering using ceramic filters.

Doe Run's Buick Smelter was converted from a primary lead smelter to a secondary lead smelter in 1991. The recycling facility was designed to produce 60,000 tons of refined lead per year from 110,000 tons of spent starting-lighting-ignition (SLI) batteries and 10,000 tons of lead contained in drosses and scrap. Since commissioning, Buick's refined lead output has steadily increased to exceed 120,000 tons for 1999. The production gains have been the result of continuous process improvements, empowerment of the workforee, and development of additional scrap lead streams. The production gains were accomplished while setting industry standards for employee safety, reducing plant environmental emissions and employee blood leads, achieving ISO 9002 certification, and expanding product lines to meet customer requirements. This paper highlights Buick's major accomplishments through the 1990's.

Method of high-temperature reduction of oxygen-bearing sulfurous gas has been developed at Copper Plant (CP) of MMC ?Norilsk Nickel? Trans-Polar Division (PD) with the aim of producing elemental sulfur from Vanyukov furnace? off-gas. Non-explosive reduction technology of oxygen-bearing sulfurous gas by methane utilized at Copper Plant has been designed to separate the processes of gas heating and sulfur dioxide reduction based on different kinetic of the reactions oxygen fixing and SO2 reduction. First, natural gas promptly reacts with oxygen contained in the process gas to heat a gas mixture up to the temperature of sulfur dioxide reduction (1200C). Then isothermal reduction takes place within 1 sec. Combustion chamber (pre-chamber) design developed based on the above principles is presented. Practical experience of the two reduction reactors operation at CP since 1996 proves high efficiency of the developed reduction process. The volume efficiency rises dramatically thanks to the fact that both fuel and reducing agent are fed into the reactor volume in the form of high-speed turbulent jets providing an intensive mixing of the reacting gases. On condition of equal internal volume of the reactors, the developed process offers higher efficiency of reagent interaction resulting in sulfur conversion exceeding 90%, as compared to the equilibrium one.

"The number of hybrid vehicles is increasing and this is causeing an increase in waste nickelmetal hydride batteries. The cathode activating agent of batteries is made of nickel hydroxide and the anode activating agent is an alloy of nickel and rare earth elements. Conventional rotary kiln methods cannot recover the rare earth elements, and hydrometallurgical treatment of crushed product consumes large volumes of agent. The physical separation of the anode alloy from the cathode hydroxide would make it possible to reuse the alloy. The authors have reported separation of anode and cathode components in the large size fractions using a newly developed dry magnetic separation method. Wet magnetic separation has been applied to the powder fraction and about 90% anode purity was achieved. This paper reviews experimental results from previous publications and proposes an integrated treatment process for crushed nickel-metal hydride batteries.IntroductionEnvironmentally-conscious clean energy vehicles have attracted much attention in developed countries and particularly hybrid vehicles are increasingly mass-produced as low emission vehicles. Hybrid vehicles have both a gasoline engine and an electric motor to save on gasoline usage and a nickel-metal hydride battery is used to store electric energy. The battery contains Nihydroxide and Co as the cathode activating agent and an alloy of Ni and mischmetal (mM), a rare-earth element mixture consisting of La, Ce, and Nd, as the anode hydrogen adsorption component. In conventional recycling, the Ni and Fe are recovered with a rotary kiln-electric melting process and the Co and mM go to the slag component [1] and hydrometallurgical treatment of crushed product consumes large volumes of agent. Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation have proposed a low energy and low cost recycling treatment process combining the physical and chemical treatments and the authors are investigating the physical treatment process."

A spouted bed electrode (SBE) has been used, in laboratory experiments, to electrowin zinc from zinc chloride electrolytes with the objective of determining the suitability of this electrode for commercial application. Zinc was successfully electrowon at current densities ranging up to 4,38 lA/m2, which are an order of magnitude larger than those used at present in the zinc industry. Current efficiencies, for the cell with the SBE, have been as high as 90% and DC energy consumption as low as 2.8 kWh/kg zinc deposited. The performance of the cell has been measured as a function of current density, anode type, cell diaphragm, addition of tributyl ammonium chloride and purging of the electrolyte (to remove dissolved chlorine).

Mining is one of the oldest and most important productive activities in Chile. In the latter half of the 80's &d during the 1990's Chilean mining has experienced explosive growth fundamentally due to legislative changes which have encouraged an influx of foreign capital. Fine copper production has grown from 1,4 million tons in 1987 to 3,4 million tons in 1997. Gold production has increased from 17.03 tons in 1987 to 49.46 tons in 1997. In both cases private investment has driven this growth. The direct impact of mining on the Chilean economy has been considered one of the fundamental pillars of the growth of the country in the last years. The indirect impact that has generated on the other sectors of the Chilean economy and in particular the regional economies, has not been analyzed. This paper outlines a methodology for estimating the impact of mining investment and mining operations in different sectors of the Chilean economy at both regional and national levels. It applies this methodology to the case of Minera Escondida, the largest copper mine in the world, analyzing its economic impacts on the regional and national levels.

"A novel process for minor elements control in copper pyrometallurgical production is proposed based on a theoretical analysis and the results of an experimental program. Its application can solves operational problems related to volatile elements that determine pollutants gas emissions and the final quality of anodes. The process considers a calcination of mixtures of the dust with sulfidizing agents such as dirty copper concentrate or elemental sulfur at temperature under 800 °C. The product are a clean calcine that recovers all the Cu content on the dust and a gas stream that collect the minor elements as sulfides species. The calcine can be returned to the smelter avoiding the As increasing in the circuit and so on, the capacity for the treatment of dirty concentrates for the smelter can be higher. The possibility to apply vacuum in the calcinations step can decrease the operation temperature. The solid condensed from the gas has different options for its stabilization, with the advantage that this stream represents few mass with high As content.IntroductionThe control of undesired minor elements (IVIES) in conventional pyrometallurgical copper production is especially relevant for ore deposits associated to Andes region. WC-Co nanocomposite powder is among the first group of materials with a promising potential for nanocrystalline-materials application. A chemical vapor synthesis (CVS) process that has previously been used for preparing the aluminides of titanium and nickel, and other metallic and intermetallic powders has been applied to the preparation of WC-Co nanocomposite powder. This CVS system was designed so that a tungsten precursor (WCl6 powder) and a cobalt precursor (CoCl2 powder) were separately fed into each evaporator in a reactor by means of specially designed powder feeders. The reduction and carburization of the vaporized chlorides by methane-hydrogen mixtures produced nanosized WC and Co composite powder. The product is a very uniform mixture of the constituent powders, which is important to ensure a high quality of the bulk cemented tungsten carbide product after consolidation. In the present work, the effects of reaction temperature, CH4 to WCl6 ratio, CH4 to H2 ratio, residence time, and Co content on the powder composition and particle size were determined. The products were characterized using XRD, carbon analyzer, and TEM.

In 1982, Asarco operated six smelters and refineries producing primary copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold. At that time Asarco was still reliant on its custom smelting and refining roots and mined only 25% of its smelting and refining capacity for copper and 10% of its lead smelting and refining capacity. By 1992, Asarco had been reshaped to become largely an integrated primary metal producer operating four smelters and three refineries. Zinc is no longer refined and the mining capacity has been increased to meet 100% of copper smelting and 50% of lead smelting needs. Only one custom smelter is in operation. This paper describes the metallurgical changes and challenges which have occurred in this restructuring of Asarco's operations while maintaining Asarco's position as one of the largest non-ferrous metals producers in the world.

"One of the methods for waste treatment is composting during which as a result of controlled biological decomposition of organic waste in aerobic conditions harmless materials are received. Composting takes place in suitably designed premises which ensure the optimal conditions for biochemical decomposition of the waste. A usual way to process composting is the spreading of the waste on a base made from reinforced concrete.In the paper the phases and basic technical features of the process of composting, the requirements and properties of the base and the ways of protection of concrete base against corrosion are revealed. Technical decisions for a specific construction site in Bulgaria are shown and the advantage of achieving durability of the concrete constructions in the plant while achieving simultaneous environment protection from pollution is discussed.IntroductionComposting is the process of controlled biochemical decomposition of vegetable and animal organic waste in aerobic conditions as a result of which harmless materials are obtained. The latter have better stability and are rich in humus substances which are useful for agricultural crops and can be used for restoring the soil fertility [1, 2, 3, 4].In modern waste treatment plants a composting technology is adopted in which the waste is spread on a concrete base as piles with certain dimensions [1, 3]. These piles are periodically stirred or air is blown through them in order to ensure the quantity of oxygen required for the process of aerobic decomposition of the organic matter. The fluids and gases formed in the course of the composting are take away in order not to pollute the environment – air, water, and soils. For this purpose the base on which the waste is spread must satisfy certain requirements, and the gases must be taken away and rendered harmless in order to protect the atmospheric air from pollution. This paper discusses the need for protecting the concrete base from corrosion and characterizes the stages and main parameters of the composting process and the possibilities for primary and secondary protection of the concrete base from corrosion. Specific technical decisions applied in a composting facility in the area of the town of Plovdiv are presented."

This paper initially gives a brief overview of Zinc Corporation of South Africa Limited (Zincor). The original design parameters of the Zincor roasters are compared to the current operation, and the requirements for efficient roasting are listed. Roaster operational problems experienced during the early to mid 1990's are outlined. A description of the investigation and the outcome to increase overall roaster availability are given. The history and the development of the use of oxygen at the Zincor roaster operation, with an account of the associated operational experiences, are explained.

Since the mid 1970's, development of zinc electrowinning (EW) facilities has out-paced its counterparts in the copper and nickel electrowinning industries in the design of efficient, compact, and automated production plants. Recent advances in process automation have provided opportunities to increase current efficiency, productivity and cathode quality, while reducing the footprint of the plant and the number of operating personnel working on top of the cells. Usually, the practice has been to allow a totally contaminated building structure, combining the plant ventilation system with the process cooling air. As a result, facilities employing this practice are finding difficult to meet their process design criteria and the stringent labor and environmental requirements. This paper provides an overview of the problems and disadvantages associated with these older process designs. It also describes new developments in ventilation systems, particularly building design developments and cost savings that are possible when improved ventilation systems are introduced into efficient process operations. While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. Results from the Metallurgical Department of Universidad de Conception showed that fire-refined copper could be rolled without previous remelting for deoxidation. The goal of this work is to determine the rheology of fire-refined copper from tensile tests at different temperatures and strain rates, and Ford plane compression tests. All that in order to simulate and calculate rolling process variables. For rheology hardness coefficients, n variables between 0.28 at 600°C and 0.46 at ambient temperature are obtained. The sensibility coefficient for strain rate m varies between 0.056 at 600°C and 0.006 at ambient temperature. The activation energy for plastic flow Q in the considered temperature range is 1436 cal/mol.
