In 1985 the Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) conducted a study to evaluate the emerging selective agglomeration processes (Killmeyer, 1985). This paper covers a recent similar study evaluating an associated technology, the emerging advanced froth flotation processes. This study has goals similar to those of the 1985 study: to evaluate the emerging froth flotation technologies collectively and determine how far they have progressed in their ability to clean ultrafine coal, and to assess the differences among the participants. The major concern again in this study was not the level of development, nor the economics of each individual process but only the current technical performance.

"INTRODUCTIONThe idea of building a summit tunnel under the Brenner occurred to the Italian engineer Giovanni Qualizza as far back as 1847. But it was to be another 160 years to pass before a base tunnel was to be built.In 1971 the idea of a tunnel at the Brenner was dusted off again. The UIC, the International Union of Railways, commissioned a study for a new Brenner railway with a base tunnel. By 1989 three feasibility studies had been drawn up which formed the basis for further planning of the Brenner Base Tunnel.This was the start of the planning activities. In 1994, the European Union included the Berlin-Naples corridor in the list of priority projects. Ten years later, Austria and Italy signed a State Treaty to build the Brenner Base Tunnel. In that same year, what is today the BBT SE was established.PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) with a length of 55 km is the centrepiece of the Helsinki-Valletta Transeuropean Traffic Corridor from Finland to Southern Italy. The BBT tunnel system connects in the north with the Innsbruck station (Austria) as well as to the feeder routes in the Lower Inn Valley, and opens to the south with the projected new line in the direction of Verona (Italy). The tangible design efforts have been underway since 1999; the start of construction of the first section was in the year 2007. The project is financed by the Italian and Austrian governments (each 30 %), as well as by the European Union (40 %).From 2027 onwards the Brenner base tunnel, including the existing lines connected with it, will carry a daily average of 330 trains (approx. 80% cargo trains and 20% passenger trains)."

The quality of cleaned products from coal preparation plants is often variable due to natural fluctuations in the washability characteristics of the plant feed. To combat this problem, many modern plants have installed on-line analyzers that provide feedback for the real-time control of product quality via the adjustment of circuit cutpoints. Unfortunately, optimization studies show that this approach may actually lead to increased losses of saleable coal. This paper discusses the problems associated with the real-time manipulation of circuit cutpoints and suggests alternative modes of operation that are better suited for plant optimization. A case study involving an eastern U.S. coal plant has been used to compare the economic impacts of these different approaches for plantwide control.

The Toquepala concentrator expansion project incremented the capacity of the existing concentrator by 15,000 Metric tons per day (t/d), from 45,000 to 60,000 t/d. The plant is located in southern Peru,1,200 km southeast of Lima. The implementation plan for the expansion project was based upon an engineering and procurement contract, and a construction contract. The overall Project Management was by Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC). The expansion followed a very aggressive schedule that considered a construction period of only ten months, with minimum interference to the existing facilities. Major equipment was purchased during basic engineering. This paper details the design, construction, and commissioning of the 6.4 m diameter by 10.2 m long ball mill, and the performance of the milling circuit during the first two months of operation.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamental aspects of shear-flocculation using a rapid, in-situ particle size analyzer. Silica was stirred in the presence of an aliphatic amine to determine the effects of collector coverage, stirring speed, and solids concentration on the kinetics of shear-flocculation. The results showed that shear-flocculation is a two-stage process. In the first stage, mean particle size increased rapidly in the first 1-2 min of reaction; in the second stage, an equilibrium was set up between the rate of floc growth and floc decay. Collector dosage affected the position of the equilibrium by altering the number of surface sites for particle-particle attachment. A minimum stirring speed was necessary for shear-flocculation to occur and was dependent on solids concentration and collector dosage. This speed was the minimum necessary for particles to overcome the electrostatic energy barrier which kept conditioned particles dispersed. Larger particles flocculated more rapidly. At very high stirring speeds, large flocs became unstable, resulting in a narrowed particle size distribution in the slurry.

In mid 1978 Inland Cement Industries Ltd. brought on-line their new one million megagram (Mg) per year cement plant at Tilbury Island, Delta, British Columbia. The Plant--Its Philosophy of Design The design of this plant began in 1974, at the beginning of the rapid rise in petroleum costs later referred to as the "energy crisis". The trend in fuel costs was clear, so one of the basic criteria for the selection of process equipment was high thermal efficiency. Throughout the process of selection of materials handling and process equipment, energy consumption was a factor in decisions. A second factor which influenced the design of the plant was its location on navigable water. The plant is designed to make maximum use of this means of transport to minimize transportation costs. All raw materials (and some fuel) are received by water, and a major portion of the cement and clinker is sent out by barge. Extensive modern dock and material handling facilities were provided to accomplish the shipping and receiving functions. A plant meeting stringent environmental regulations was the third major factor which formed the basis for design. To meet this requirement, all storage facilities had to be covered, 53 bag type dust collectors were applied throughout the plant, and materials handling equipment was designed to minimize dust and spillage.

The US economy grew steadily in 1989, reaching an annual rate of $5.3 trillion in the last quarter (US trillion=1012 ). The value of domestically processed, mineral-based materials rose 5% to $315 billion (US billion=109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 14% to $11.6 billion, while industrial minerals rose 2% to $20.2 billion. Recycled scrap was valued at $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were $2.31 and $3.56/kg ($1.05 and $1.62 per lb) for copper, $1.58 and $2.57/kg (72 and $1.17 per lb) for aluminum, 77 and 97 cents/kg (35 cents and 44 cents per lb) for lead, and $1.58 and $2.09/kg (72 cents and 95 cents per lb) for zinc. Many mining and metal companies reported reasonable profits. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. 250 million US citizens already possess 172 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production fell 4% to 6.8 million units, while truck and bus production fell 1 % to four million units. New housing starts fell 9% to 1.4 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. Imports of crude and refined petroleum costing $50 billion exceeded domestic crude oil production. President Bush expressed "strong concerns about this country becoming further dependent on foreign oil." And the Department of Energy held a series of hearings around the country to develop ideas for a "national energy strategy."

Outokumpu flash smelting of copper concentrates was introduced in 1949 and flash smelting of nickel concentrates in 1959, both at Harjavalta in southwest Finland. The first flash smelter outside Finland was started up in 1956 in Ashio, Japan. Between 1956 and the present about 25 flash smelters for copper, and nickel concentrates have been put into operation in different parts of the world. Outokumpu"s research organization has been highly involved in the development of flash smelting. For example, a direct blister flash smelting process was developed in 1975 and introduced in Glogów, Poland, in 1978, and another has been designed for Zaire. This straight metal process is based on low iron content of the concentrate, which reduces the amount of recycling slag copper. Additionally, the concentrates are rather low in impurities.

Laboratory testing was carried out to evaluate several devices for recovering clean coal from bituminous coal refuse material. The bulk of the testing focused on using a dense-medium cyclone to process -0.6-mm refuse material. A hindered-settling column and a spiral concentrator were also used to process nominal 1.2 x 0.15-mm material. Product yields and ash contents were obtained for all tests, while partition curves were generated for selected tests from which the characteristic performance parameters (relative density of separation and probable error) were determined. The results indicated that the dense-medium cyclone was capable of cleaning down to 0.037 mm, while the other devices were effective to 0.15 mm. INTRODUCTION At the time the 4th edition of this book was published in 1979, the coal industry had experienced a sharp upturn in prices for its product. From 1950 throgh 1969, steam coal prices had held almost flat at about $5 US per st (about $5.50/t). Thus, when considering the effects of inflation, the price of coal had actually been declining for two decades. The passage of the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act in 1969 and its cost effects started an upward trend in coal prices which was rapidly accelerated by the effects of the Mid-East oil embargo in 1972. Prices of steam coal on the spot market eventually climbed to over $30 US per st ($33/t) and higher in some cases. Metallurgical coal prices skyrocketed in a similar manner and the industry at long last appeared assured of an adequate return on investment. Many companies did expend large sums of money to upgrade and expand their mining and preparation facilities. Unfortunately the bubble eventually burst, in great measure due to the downturn in the US domestic steel industry and the resultant decline in metallurgical coal demand, loss of export markets to other nations and even imports of large amounts of foreign coal to the United States, and more stringent environmental regulations which made many high sulfur coal measures uneconomical to mine. Compounding the problem was the rapid world decline in oil prices in the mid-1980s which encouraged many consumers to utilize oil rather than coal. During the 1980s, metallurgical coal dropped over 20% in price, which, when considering inflation, actually amounted to about a 40% decrease in value. Export coal decreased a similar amount in price. Steam coal prices held nearly constant, thus also losing considerable value when inflation is considered. All of these factors make it even more imperative than ever that the industry do everything in its power to make wise economic decisions and to examine carefully all existing operations and planned future expenditures to be certain that their full cost implications are understood and that they can be justified on the basis of an adequate return on investment. It cannot be assumed that the price of coal will increase. To the contrary, as indicated previously, when considering inflation, coal decreased in value in the 1980s, just as it also did in the 1950s and 1960s. The price surges in the 1970s merely were a catchup game, and in truth the true market value of coal is in reality even lower than it was in 1950. The strength of anchorage of various types of roof bolts in permafrost depends on the types of rock in which they are installed. Variation in the mine thermal regime results in weakening of the roof and walls, and at times total loss of ice cement bonds takes place in the surrounding rockmass. In mines with positive ventilation air temperature, the wedge or expansion types of bolts may become weakened due to the transfer of heat into the anchorage through the metal rod and subsequent thawing of rocks. Effective operation and evaluation of roof bolt systems for mine workings in permafrost require predictions of the dynamics of wall thawing by warm ventilation air. A fatal accident may result when a dozer is driven over a hidden void in a coal surge pile and the dozer falls into the void, burying and suffocating the dozer operator. This type of accident was analyzed by researchers from the Spokane Research Laboratory of the National Institute for Occupational Safely and Health using inexpensive fault-tree programs that had been developed, for use on a personal computer. Fault-tree analysis is a systematic safety-analysis tool that proceeds deductively from the occurrence of an accident event to the identification of the root causes of that event. The analysis identified basic and intermediate events that led to the burial of the dozer and graphically depicted the interrelationship between the basic events as well as the intermediate events leading up to the accident. A sensitivity analysis on assigned probabilities showed which events had the greatest influence on dozer burial in a coal surge pile. Operational guidelines and engineering controls are suggested to decrease the probability of a burial event.

INTRODUCTION This paper traces the application of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) at industrial and pilot scale in Australia. The Argyle Diamond Mine installed the first of two smooth segmented HPGRs during 1990 in an open-circuit secondary-tertiary crushing application to increase throughput. In 2002 a third HPGR was added to improve liberation and so increase the recovery of smaller diamonds. The latest improvements in wear technology (tyre with tungsten carbide studs) were incorporated in the design of this machine. Extensive HPGR pilot-plant trials were undertaken during the 1990s at both the Kalgoorlie Consolidate Gold Mine and the Boddington Gold Mine. The purpose of these trials was to evaluate HPGR as a method to increase throughput, as an alternative to SAG milling, and also to ascertain if downstream benefits existed. One of the challenges for HPGR circuit designers is to translate what occurs at small laboratory and pilot scale into what is likely to happen in a full-scale circuit. Scale-up from pilot machine results is normally recommended by manufacturers. However, such tests need relatively large quantities of material, particularly if meaningful data on wear are to be obtained. Laboratory tests are preferable, as they need relatively small quantities of ore, but may be questioned in terms of how they relate to full-scale operation. Modelling and simulation have played a particularly important role in this respect in Australia. Models are available which have proven to be very accurate at being able to scale throughput and specific energy response from laboratory to industrial machines. More recently, work in Australia has also been done in developing a model which has the potential to scale laboratory wear data as well.

"In urban areas, it is often required to construct additional railway tunnels beneath existing railway tunnels. In this case, dynamic interaction between tunnels at the intersection becomes an important issue, as it amplifies structural behavior causing damage to structures and inconvenience to passengers. In this study, vibration superposition effect at the intersection between existing and newly constructed tunnels is investigated by the numerical method. Dynamic interaction mechanism is firstly examined using simple sine wave load, and then a typical analysis for actual multi-leveled tunnel intersection is performed. The results show that the dynamic amplification due to dynamic interaction of tunnels is 149% at the crown of lower tunnel. This indicates that the vibration superposition effect must be considered when the planning and design of a new tunnel beneath the existing tunnel. 1. INTRODUCTION In these days, there are increasing cases that trains cross without transfer stations in metropolitan areas. Consequently, either tunnel is necessarily to be neighboring or crossing, thus tunnel sections closely located are created as shown in Figure 1. If a new tunnel is constructed beneath the existing tunnel, the vibration due to trains passing through each tunnel can mutually affect. The behavior of coupled vibrations may occur and exceed the allowable structural limit, and cause inconvenience to passengers. Theoretically, when vibration waves are propagated from a source to different locations, amplification or decrease of the vibrations can occur by the principle of wave superposition and interference. Multi-leveled tunnel intersection is one of the cases mentioned above. In the actual tunnel, it is difficult to investigate the vibration superposition effect due to a complex ground conditions and structural geometries. In addition, train vibration itself is multi-source vibration, which cannot be theatrically analyzed. Thus, at the tunnel intersection, train vibration from two tunnels make the problem more complicated."

Of many physical parameters critical to design of grinding processes, impact of grinding media is among the most difficult to measure or predict. Yet impact of falling grinding balls, pebbles, or rods accomplishes the fine grinding essential to metallurgical recovery of most important minerals. Unfortunately, the same impacts that break ore fragments deform or crack grinding mill liners. A project was undertaken at Climax Molybdenum Company to measure impact forces in operating ball mills so that they might be used to calculate stresses in liner materials and be correlated with service performance of mill liner alloys. Towards that end, a method of measuring impact forces on ball mill liners using an instrumented grinding ball has been developed. Preliminary tests show that impact forces and contact stresses imposed on bare mill liners are quite high but are greatly reduced by cushioning when coarse ore particles are crushed between balls and liners. Compressive and shear stresses induced in liners not protected by coarse ore are so severe that deformation or minute subsurface cracking are inevitable in all but the small production grinding mills, regardless of mill liner alloy strength or hardness.

"Mining began, in the Colstrip area in the 1920's by the Northern Pacific Railroad. The coal was used for steam locomotives until 1957, when the advent of diesel power made them obsolete. In 1959, Montana Power Company purchased the Northern Pacific properties including the mining equipment, coal leases and the town of Colstrip. Western Energy Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Montana Power Company was formed in 1966 to manage the mining operations in Colstrip. The Rosebud Mine officially re-opened in 1968 to supply coal for Montana Power Company's J. E. Corette Plant In Billings. Since 1970, Long Construction has operated the mine equipment for Western Energy Company". The Rosebud Mine is located in Southeast Montana and supplies coal to two 350 megawatt power plants located in Colstrip and one 180 megawatt plant located in Billings. Approximately 30 percent of Western's annual production is consumed by these plants. The remaining production is shipped to the mid-west and burned by utility companies and municipalities.

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. The development of large quantities of ground water for any major use in an area is always of environmental concern to representatives of regulatory groups, citizens, agricultural and industrial users. From these concerns, state and federal congressional representatives receive a variety of impulses from their constituents and in turn begin a series of questions upon which to-base appropriate legislative actions. The kaolin industry in Georgia is substantial to the economy and the welfare of an important segment of east-central Georgia. It uses large quantities of water for processing. This constitutes an important source of income and tax revenue. Pumping test procedures to provide an accurate and efficient dewatering scheme have been developed and carried out at a number of mines in the kaolin district of Georgia. This paper highlights one such test and is directed at an assessment of the impact of this industry on ground water supplies of an area.

Horizontal drilling in coal mines is a relatively new technology. The earliest recorded drilling in the United States was done in 1952 at the Humphrey Mine of Consolidation Coal Company for degasification of coal seams. Spindler and Poundstone experimented with vertical and horizontal holes for eight years. They concluded in 1960 that horizontal drilling in advance of underground mining appeared to offer the most promising prospect (for degasification) but effective and extensive application would be dependent upon the ability to drill long holes, possibly 300-to 600 m, with reasonably precise directional control and within practical cost limits.(1) Mining Research Division of Continental Oil Company, the parent company of Consolidation Coal Company, began a research program in the early 1970's to achieve the above objective. The technology needed to drill nearly 300 m in advance of working faces was developed by 1975 and experiments on advance degasification with such deep holes began in 1976. Preliminary Its of this research have already been published.(2) To date nearly 4500 m of horizontal holes have been drilled for advance degasification and earlier results were reconfirmed. In summary, these are: 1) The greatest impact of these boreholes was felt in the face area where methane concentrations were reduced to nearly 0.3 percent in course of two to three months from original values of nearly 0.95 percent.
