More than 55 km of tunnels have been constructed by TBM in the last 12 years to refurbish and upgrade the high voltage cable network in London. These include a tunnel of 20km length using EPBM machines in both clay and granular soils. Route selection was made with reference to subsurface structures, existing ground conditions, using suitable shaft locations addressing environmental concerns. The complex interfaces to manage included obtaining of consents to the coordination of multiple suppliers. The paper describes how all these challenges have been met successfully and how technology has been employed to provide for safe construction and operation in the congested urban environment.

"Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."

During the last few years there has been a rapid increase in the development of the community or junior college throughout the United States, Some factors behind this development include the need for more college facilities to service the growing number of high school graduates, the desire of the public to provide some post high school education at reasonable costs, and the need to provide post high school educational opportunities not now provided by most of the universities and colleges. Many of the new community colleges provide at least three educational services including local opportunity to provide the first two years of a four year college program, two year technical-vocational programs of a terminal nature, and adult educational opportunities. The community college has the advantage of not being saddled with years of academic tradition which prevent it from changing to suit the educational needs of the community It serves. The flexibility of the community college in developing new programs, particularly in the technical areas, is going to provide industry with many of the badly needed technicians it is now unable to secure.

This paper presents a dynamic model for column flotation. The model equations are normalized and the dimensionless groups that are directly responsible in determining the column flotation behavior are identified. The resulting model equations are incorporated for computer simulation. Numerical results from computer simulations are analyzed to gather information about design and operation of column flotation devices.

In the mining and processing industry, the maintenance plan has often evolved rather than being consciously set up resulting in an overreliance on breakdown and fixed-time maintenance (planned maintenance). Historically mining and processing plant equipment has been robust and less automated than modem equipment, making it relatively easy to work on. Mining and processing plants have relied on large and expensive maintenance departments to enable rapid attention to breakdowns. Maintenance itself can result in excessive downtime and costs. This results from the requirement to take the machinery off-line to carry out (possibly unnecessary and invasive) maintenance. The danger of infant mortality after it has been put back on line again and also the cost of the maintenance action itself contributes to costs. A goal of any well-run maintenance program is to have the lowest cost while providing 100% capacity 100% of the time to operations. When maintenance investments are at a minimum, the cost of lost production is at its highest. As maintenance effort and investments are intelligently increased, the production loss gradually decreases until the lowest combined cost is achieved. This is the maintenance goal. A road map is needed to achieving maintenance excellence. This article addresses a "Road Map" to achieving maintenance excellence. INTRODUCTION Mining and processing industry maintenance is big business. A world-class maintenance program is characterized by maintenance excellence.

"The iron ores of the Lake Superior region are found almost exclusively in rocks of Huronian age, the only exception of importance being in the Vermilion district. It may be estimated that about 95 per cent of the ores thus far mined have been obtained from Huronian rocks. Although these ores come from rocks of varying age and slightly varying type, they have many features in common, and therefore may readily be described together.The iron formations of the Lake Superior region consist essentially of interbanded layers of mixtures in widely varying proportions of silica and iron oxide, and are called taconite, ferruginous chert, or jaspilite. They vary considerably in hard¬ness and color, depending upon the tenor of silica and the history of the rock. Local phases of the iron bearing formation consist of cherty iron carbonates, greenalite or ferrous silicate, rocks, amphibole-magnetite masses, cherts and slates, and pyritic quartz rocks. The average iron content of all the original phases of the iron bearing formations, excluding interbedded slates, is about 25 per cent, while the average iron content for all portions of the formation, whether in the original condition or not, is about 38 per cent. It is believed that this difference is due essen¬tially to the removal of silica in solution from the. primary phases, and, of course, such removal of silica has in many cases produced material now used as iron ore, since it contains con¬siderably more than 38 per cent of iron."

The increasing popularity of column flotation as an efficient and profitable mineral beneficiation technique has resulted in the need to perform a study of basic column operating parameters in order to understand mineral behavior in a column. Variation of column rougher flotation parameters on the Nevada Fish Creek fluorite and Utah Collins manganese ores enabled characterization of four beneficiation zones within a column flotation cell. Although specific mineral behavior in each zone was peculiar to the mineral system involved, particle retention time predominantly affected both manganese and fluorite recoveries in the collection zones of the column while enhancing mineral grades in the cleaning zones. Column parameters such as column length, feed injection location, and tailings recirculation velocity were inherently linked to particle retention time and retention time distribution, both of which affected mineral recovery. Froth depth had a discernible effect on fluorite concentrate grades; as froth depth increased, fluorite grades increased. Wash water additions affected both fluorite and manganese recoveries and fluorite grade. Axial mixing drastically reduced fluorite and manganese recoveries due to short circuiting of some of the feed slurry in the column.

The characteristic problems related to drilling a hole for evaluation of an orebody are generally quite similar, whether we're drilling a core hole, or a hole to obtain chip samples. The basic objective in each case is fundamentally an economic factor; to produce the maximum amount of usable information per hole at a reasonable footage price. The success of the drilled hole depends largely upon the amount of investigation and research spent on the prospective area and the ability to forecast the capable personnel needed plus the right kind of drills, ancillary equipment such as bits, muds and various additives necessary to make the drilling program successful. The driller is confronted with a wide variation of drilling problems due to the nature of subsurface conditions. Some of these problems are: overburden, which may consist of clays; sand; boulders; or glacial till. These surface conditions may exist up to 2,000 feet in depth and upon reaching bedrock, formations may consist of swelling shales, broken sandstones, and every conceivable rock-type, coupled with every known structural problem such as dips, faults, folds, etc., and to this added extras such as permafrost and/or ground water problems combine to increase the necessity why an understanding of the problems along with the proper reaction of the driller plus the formula to compensate for ground conditions is necessary to complete a drill hole. Since most geologists are familiar with diamond core drilling techniques, I would like to discuss other methods used in evaluating ore deposits.

This paper reviews various bauxite classification schemes with respect to the differences in texture, composition and geological associations of the deposits. It demonstrates that a techno-economic classification, based on: a) associated rock type - lateritic versus karstic, b) content of aluminum ore minerals - gibbsite, boehmite and diaspore, and c) gangue minerals (iron oxides etc.) has a geological basis with natural cut-off points for the bauxite types identified. Thus, this scheme is seen as applicable to bauxite resources. It also provides a basis for their rational exploitation taking into consideration the long-term interests of both the bauxite producing and consuming countries. Against this background, the industrial mineral or non-metallurgical grades of bauxite are seen as localised and relatively rare occurrences. Their consumption should, therefore, be aimed toward the specific (hence more remunerative) products as indicated by the bauxite characteristics.

A beneficiation process has been developed to provide selective separation of unburned carbon from high LOI fly ash. Previous reports of utilizing froth flotation to achieve selective separations required long residence times and high reagent costs. A proprietary reagent system has been developed to address both of these limitations. Based on the results obtained from laboratory and pilot-scale investigations, a flowsheet design has been developed to produce two distinct usable products from class F fly ash; low LOI ash and a high carbon product suitable for reburning or further upgrading. A process flowsheet and description are presented.

The Hicom mill is a conical mill in which a ball or autogenous load tumbles within a high-intensity acceleration field. An autogenous Hicom mill with a power density of about 1100 kw/m3 and a volume of just 4 litres reduced a 50 m quartzite feed to 90% passing 38 microns at a feed rate of 160kg/h (in closed circuit with a hydrocyclone). Batch tests have identified fracture, chipping and abrasion breakage mechanisms at pebble sizes of 5 to 50 mm. The special behaviour of the load in Hicom mills was exploited to develop a novel technique for estimating steady state autogenous load size distributions.

It is the intent of this paper to discuss the autogenous grinding circuit at Hibbing Taconite. The scope of the presentation includes; a brief history, the process flowsheet and the steps taken to improve mill productivity, availability and metallurgical performance. Hibbing Taconite is located near the center of the Mesabi Range in Northern Minnesota 100 miles from the Canadian border and 80 miles north of the Lake Superior Port Cities of Duluth and Superior. A 105 mile railroad connects us with the port of Superior, Wisconsin, where our pellets are loaded into lake carriers for lower lake destinations. It is worthy to mention the Mesabi Range's most famous landmark which is immediately to the south of our mine area. This is the Hull Rust Mahoning Mine which operated until the mid-1970's producing more than 700 million tons of red ore between 1893 and 1973.

Laboratory studies were carried out at West Virginia University to investigate the rock fragmentation mechanism by continuous miners using an automated rotary cutting simulator. The primary factors influencing the: fragmentation process were found to be: bit spacing, bit geometry, depth of cut, and cutting drum rotational speed. This paper presents the influence of these parameters in achieving optimum energy consumption and minimizing dust generation during rock fragmentation process. Three bits were used simultaneously on Indiana limestone while the bit tip angle was varied from 60° to 90°. Bit spacing was varied from 2.54 cm (1 in.) to 5.08 cm (2 in.) while the cutting process was assessed for varying cutting depths. Respirable dust generated during the course of the experiments was analyzed utilizing cascade impactors. Assessment of these parameters has led to a better understanding of the cutting mechanism by continuous miners in terms of energy consumption and dust generation.

INTRODUCTION Use of air-cooling or refrigeration equipment in underground mines is needed when conventional ventila¬tion techniques do not maintain acceptable environ¬mental temperatures in working areas. Because refrig¬eration can be very expensive, it should be implemented only after all possible and practical steps have been taken to eliminate or reduce heat sources in the mine. As an example, to prevent the main ventilation fans from contributing heat to mine air, they should be located in the air return and not in the air intake. It is particularly important to prevent any direct contact between hot water and ventilation air, especially in mines which encounter large flows of hot fissure water. Any water hotter than the prevailing wet-bulb temperature of the ambient air must be removed by pipes located as close as possible to the water source. This hot water must not be allowed free contact with the incoming ventilation air at any time during the water's passage out of the mine. Although insulation of the pipes carrying the hot water is seldom necessary, direct contact between the air and the water must be prevented so the warm water cannot evaporate. REVIEW OF COOLING PRACTICES Spot Coolers vs. Centralized Refrigeration To eliminate a few specific hot places in an otherwise cool mine, it is possible to use devices known as "spot coolers." A typical spot cooler that uses chilled water is shown in Fig. 1. These devices consist of self-contained refrigeration units that are often mounted on rail cars for haulage to hot spots. The cooling capacities of such spot coolers usually are limited to about 100 kW or 30 "refrigeration tons." A refrigeration ton represents a cooling rate that produces 1.0 st of ice in 24 hr; that is a cooling rate of 3.517 kW (200 Btu per min). Typically, the electric-power consumption to drive the compressor motor of the refrigeration plant in mines is 1.0 kW per refrigeration ton, corresponding to a coefficient of per¬formance of about 3.5. The principal difference between spot coolers and centralized refrigeration plants is the method of re¬jecting heat from the refrigeration system. Centralized refrigeration plants always discharge heat into the reject or return airflow of the mine; often that is the primary influence in selecting the location for the underground refrigeration plant. Heat from spot coolers usually is rejected into drain water or into air that is not flowing to the location requiring the cooling. As a result, spot coolers remove heat from troublesome hot spots in the mine, injecting that heat-plus the electrical energy used by the cooling unit itself-into other working areas where the ambient conditions are cooler. In effect, this is "robbing Peter to pay Paul." In deep, extensive mines, spot coolers usually pro¬vide only temporary and, over the long term, expensive solutions to localized cooling problems. Centralized re¬frigeration plants are preferred for such mines, with cooling distributed throughout the mine as required. Fig. 2 illustrates a typical underground centralized re¬frigeration plant. Centralized plants lend themselves to improved maintenance at reduced costs while offering the economy of size. Refrigeration plants of larger unit sizes have considerably lower initial costs than smaller unit sizes. The remainder of this chapter is devoted to large refrigeration plants, with no further consideration of spot coolers. Cost of Refrigeration Total Cost: The total cost of refrigeration amounts to about $200/kW of cooling per year (1981 US $). This total cost breaks down into approximately three equal parts: 1) Financial charges, which include the interest and amortization on the capital cost of the initial installation, and the cost of necessary underground excavations. 2) Operating and maintenance costs which include the cost of the electric power to drive the refrigeration plant's compressors. 3) Distribution costs which include costs for pump¬ing, insulated piping, and air-to-water heat exchangers. The local cost of electric power, the number of operating months per year, and the method of refrigera¬tion distribution all contribute to the actual costs in¬curred in a given application. However, the variations usually are limited to no more than ±30% of the $200/ kW per year total cost figure. Cost Per Ton: Refrigeration cost per ton of mineral production can be calculated if the annual production tonnage from the refrigerated section of the mine is known. In most cases, this cost will be less than $1 .00/t. However, in deep mines with high rock temperatures, such as those found in South Africa, the total cost of refrigeration can increase to several dollars per ton of broken rock. Unlike coarse particles (40-50 µm), the fines (<10 µm) have low collision efficiencies with gas bubbles in flotation process. Among the alternative methods for recovering the fines are their aggregation with coarse particles (carrier flotation) and flocculation of the fines alone (shear-flocculation), prior to flotation. In any case, hydrophobic aggregation is the mechanism involved though the technique is known by different names in literature. This paper deals with theory and state-of-the-art of particle aggregation. To illustrate the dependence of aggregation on particle hydrophobicity, charge and, in turn, the sheer force, the results of quartz-DDACI and galena-xanthate systems are considered. In the flotation of complex ores selectivity is achieved by chemical control and aggregation of particles of the same species is analogous to that; however, more work is necessary on ores for a better understanding of the pulp chemical aspects from the view point of selectivity in aggregation. For a few ores, the results of earlier workers confirm improved recoveries of fines by aggregation prior to flotation.

Commercial software programs are being utilized to create and maintain a mine subsidence database in conjunction with the U.S. Bureau of mines research on mine subsidence in Illinois. A three-year survey net of monitored structures in an Illinois subdivision was entered as textual information (attributes), on an existing AutoCAD drawing. These attributes can be optionally displayed on the corresponding drawing or extracted as a text file for import to a database program. The database program, dBASEIV, allows combinations of multiple database files for extensive querying capabilities. Subsurface database files can be merged with surface database files to enhance the effectiveness of surface response analyses in mine subsidence research. The geographic information system (GIS), pcARC/INFO, was chosen to integrate existing AutoCAD drawings and dBASEIV database files into a relational database with a graphical representation. The relational database allows users to update either the graphical representation or the database, with the changes being reflected automatically in its alternate format. The increased capacity, through use of a GIS, to query combinations of database files and have the results reflected graphically has significant potential for expediting mine subsidence research.

This paper will describe briefly the steps taken in the development of a Central Florida phosphate ore deposit from acquisition to mining. Further, the design and early operation of the mining and beneficiation facilities will be depicted. During the 1950&apos;s, with confidence in the continually increasing requirement for phosphate fertilizer materials essential for producing food, I&apos;. R. Grace & Cc acquired the Hookers Prairie tract containing approximately 45 million metric tons o. (50 million short ton~ of potential phosphate rock product. In 1973, at a point when the Grace captive need for rock was being greatly enlarged by a planned doubling of its Bartow phosphate chemicals plant capacity, the decision was made to expand existing phosphate rock production by building a new mine and plant. The initial annual capacity was to be 2.3 million tons (2.5 million st); however, subsequent investigation pointed to a higher than estimated dragline operating factor &apos;and the forecast of annual capacity was set at 2.5 million tons (2.8 million st).

The known high grade mineral re- sources in the United States are fast becoming exhausted; viable new deposits are more difficult to find and more expensive to develop; operating and capital costs have increased to meet more stringent regulatory standards. By contrast, international producers enjoy a cost advantage as a result of higher mining grades, improving technological competence, and more favorable government support. The domestic base minerals industry is finding it more and more difficult to compete in world markets. It has become essentially a marginal industry today. The current philosophy of taxation in the United States has evolved over the past century. The structure of the taxing system is based on the assumption that a firm must be able to pay its tax imposts out of profits. In principle, firms incapable of supporting the tax load should be replaced by others that can do so. This philosophy applies equally well to the mining industry, so long as it remains economically healthy. However, mineral resources are finite. The situation in the domestic base mineral industry has changed fundamentally in recent times. For the reasons given above, much of the industry now cannot continue to compete profitably in the open world market; and there are no known alternative domes- tic mineral resources more capable of doing so. Under these circumstances it is important to consider the effect of taxation not only on profitability, but also on survivability.

INTRODUCTION Paradoxically, it has been found that the people who are the most aware of the origin, mineralogy and composition of bauxite are also the people who are the least aware of how bauxite composition affects its treatment by the Bayer process. These people are the exploration and mining geologists normally associated with aluminum producing companies. The purpose of this paper is to give some idea of how the concentration and physical nature of the different minerals found in bauxites affect the operation of the Bayer process used to extract their alumina content. The bauxites we will consider here will be only the tropical bauxites such as occurring in Jamaica, various countries in South America i.e. Guyana, Surinam, Brazil, African bauxites, Malaysia and in Australia. When we speak of the Bayer process, it will be the North American version of the Bayer process using low caustic concentrations and bauxite digestion temperatures varying between 130° to 250°C. TABLE 1 shows the minerals and elements of interest occurring in tropical bauxites. The minerals and elements listed in the table do not by any means represent all of those identified in bauxites. Using mass spectrographic analysis on six bauxites from different geographic locations, we managed to identify between 50-60 different elements. Fortunately, only about 13-14 of these elements possess the necessary chemical properties to be able to accumulate in caustic Bayer solutions. The remainder are either not attacked, or form insoluble reaction products with some main liquor component, i.e., hydroxide, aluminate or carbonate, or reprecipitate with alumina trihydrate during the precipitation stage.
