This paper describes a graphical technique by which the operating points for a two-fan ventilation system can be represented as the intersection of the modified fan curves. In constructing the diagram, the air quantities associated with the fans are considered to be independent variables and employed as the axes of a rectangular coordinate system. The diagram may include, in addition to the modified fan curves, contour lines for resistances, pressures, and air powers. Procedures for drawing the diagram are discussed and illustrated with an example of the ventilation system.

"This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."

Weighting materials as we know them today were first recognized in 1922 by B. K. Stroud1. Stroud, who was supervisor or the Mineral Division of the Louisiana Department of Conservation, tested galena, cement and hematite as weighting materials and successfully used hematite to make a "heavy mud". The first use of barite was in the fall of 19222 . The process of adding heavy minerals in mud was patented in 1926 by Stroud and National Pigments and Chemical Company, a subsidiary of National Lead Company now NL Industries, Inc. The ground barite was marketed as BAROIDR barite.

Artificial Intelligence research has produced several tools for commercial application. Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Expert Systems are some of the techniques that are widely used today. Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are excellent predictive, pattern recognition, and data analysis tools. In the mining industry, ANN techniques are being used commercially for real-time process control applications. Modeling of spatial data, ore reserve estimation, tunnel design, longwall stability prediction, and geologic roof classification are additional application areas in which neural networks have been applied successfully. A standard back-propagation algorithm was used to train a series of neural networks for a real-world predictive task. After training and optimizing the neural network architecture, performance of the network is measured on an independent validation set. Results indicate a correlation coefficient of up to 84 % between the actual and predicted values. A neural network model is developed for learning the spatial continuity of a mineral field and, consequently, for predicting sulfur values given coordinate values. The neural network performed not only satisfactorily, but in some cases performed better than the kriging model.

INTRODUCTION Modern mine management is constantly striving to develop improved mining methods which will not only increase productivity, but will also provide a safer work environment and make the most efficient use of our natural resources. Progress can be seen in this area by tracing mining methods through history. Work that was originally done with hand tools progressed with the age of mechanization to conventional mining, matured to continuous and longwall mining, and the advent of short¬wall mining, a combination of continuous and longwall, has recently been seen. This new method of shortwall mining provides a promising method for safe and ex¬pedient coal extraction. This study focuses upon the planning, design de¬velopment, and operation of the first producing short¬wall unit in the US which was operated in the Pittsburgh coal seam in northern West Virginia. MINE DESCRIPTION The mine is located in northern West Virginia at Grant Town in the heart of the high volatile Pittsburgh coal seam. Originally opened in 1901, the mine has be¬come one of the largest in the US, encompassing an area of approximately 103.6 sq km (40 sq miles). The seam being mined was the high volatile Pittsburgh seam which ranged in thickness from 1.8 to 2.96 m (6 to 91/2 ft). Three types of mining methods were employed: con¬tinuous mining, longwalling, and shortwalling, with each type accounting for 50%, 30%, and 20% of total pro¬duction, respectively. A total of 630 contract and super¬visory personnel were employed to produce the mine's designed annual tonnage of 1.8 Mt (2 million st). There were ten producing sections, eight continuous miners, one longwall, and one shortwall, operating a total of 22 unit shifts per day. Eight shafts, varying in depth from 80.2 to 194.2 m (263 to 637 ft) provided entrance to the Pittsburgh coal seam. These shafts were used for ventilation, portaling, coal hoisting, supply, and emergency escape hoisting. Ventilation was achieved by means of three exhaust fans which provided 707.9 m3/s (1.5 million cfm) of air to the mine and removed approximately 141 584 m3 (5 mil¬lion cu ft) of methane per 24 hr period. The room-and-pillar method was used for secondary recovery with designed barrier blocks between panels of 61 m (200 ft) in width. "The new tunnels of the Copenhagen ""Cityringen"" will be excavated, at Kongens Nytorv square, crossing over the existing M1 and M2 metro lines. After the crossing, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and adjacent masonry buildings, with a minimum tunnel cover of about 4.5 m. The tunnels have an internal diameter of 4.9m and are being excavated through earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines in mixed face.The Magasin du Nord estate is characterized by a very complex structure, with different blocks built in different times. An assessment of the condition of the building and its sensitivity to tunnellinginduced ground movements has been conducted through a fully coupled soil-structure interaction analysis; based on the results of this analysis, mitigation measures have been designed.INTRODUCTIONThe Copenhagen Metro Cityringen is expected to be running in July 2019 and will consist of two single tracks in a twin tunnels, each approximately 16 km in length, for transporting up to 243,000 passengers on an average work day. The Cityringen includes 17 underground stations with island platforms, 4 crossover facilities and 3 construction and ventilation shafts. The tunnels is being excavated using earth pressure balanced Tunnel Boring Machines and have an internal diameter of 4.90 m.The intersection with the existing M1 and M2 metro-line will take place at Kongens Nytorv and at Frederiksberg. According to the design alignment, in Kongens Nytorv the new tunnels will pass over the existing M1 and M2 ones; as a result of this, the tunnels will underpass the historical building of the Magasin du Nord and the adjacent masonry building hosting a Mc Donald’s with a minimum cover of about 4.5m.In the framework of Risk Assessment for sensitive buildings, the effects of tunneling-induced ground movements on the Estates ØS0437 (McDonald’s building), ØS0428 (Magasin du Nord) and ØS0004 (Hviids Vinstue) were evaluated. To achieve this goal a fully coupled soil-structure interaction has been considered and the entire excavation process has been reproduced in a 3D model where the abovementioned buildings have been modeled. In this way, a risk assessment analysis was performed evaluating directly the effects of the excavation in terms of settlements and variations of the internal forces as far as the excavation process proceeds. Energy West Mining operates the Deer Creek and Cottonwood/Trail Mountain coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau about 40 km (25 miles) southwest of Price, UT. The Deer Creek Mine extracts the Upper Blind Canyon seam and the Cottonwood/Trail Mountain Mine extracts the Hiawatha seam 12 to 36 m (40 to 120 ft) below. Both seams average about 2.8 m (9 ft) in thickness. Cover depths exceed 550 m (1,800 ft) in a large portion of the unmined reserve. Stability problems at Deer Creek are mostly due to coal bursts caused by high stresses associated with deep cover and sandstone channels. Most of the bursts have occurred in gate pillars and, to a lesser extent, at the longwall face and during development. The introduction of a two-entry gateroad system with 9-m- (30-ft-) wide yield pillars has been a major factor in controlling and minimizing gate pillar [ ] bursts (Agapito et al., 1988). However, some bursting began to occur in the 9-m- (30-ft-) wide pillars as cover depths reached 550 to 610 m (1,800 to 2,000 ft). This was due to more rapid and higher abutment loading in areas with very strong roof and stiff floor.

The objective of this paper is, firstly, to summarize several field developments utilizing the art of hydraulic fracturing as it has been extended into various mining applications. Secondly, to summarize the understanding of the hydraulic fracturing processes; and lastly to discuss researchable areas and possible future applications. Hydraulic fracturing was developed as a method of stimulating production of oil from oil producing formations. The primary paper by Clark (1) in 1949, describes the process of placing a hydrostatic pressure of sufficient strength on the producing formation of an oil well that the rock apparently cracked, and then, on allowing the well to flow back, a higher rate of recovery of oil was enjoyed. The interpretation of the process mechanism was that the formation rock was cracked to a considerable distance from the well bore, increasing the drainage area; thus, the productivity of the well was measurably improved. Figure 1 is illustrative of this process. This development was of major significance to the oil producing community and considerable research and development ensued. Improvements in method, engineering development of equipment, and research to ascertain the optimum application of fracturing practice led to a highly sophisticated, but specialized technology. The Production Research Division, Continental Oil Company, vigorously pursued research in this area in the 1950's with a resulting number of process improve¬ments. The research group, published a significant number of technical papers on these various researches. One of the developments was the process aimed at controlled orientation of the fractures, either in the vertical (2) or horizontal (3) orientation.

Autogenous grinding, defined as grinding with like material, while quite an old art has recently been revitalized. Two phases of autogenous grinding, primary and secondary, have been the subject of recent papers, technical articles and discussions. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a third phase of autogenous grinding - Intermediate Autogenous Grinding - comparing it to and indicating advantages over the other two phases. Autogenous grinding can also be called ?Rock grinding?1; that is, grinding using ore or rock from the same deposit as the mill feed as grinding media contrasted with using as grinding media steel rods, steel or ironballs, natural or manufactured iron, free pebbles, or other shapes and materials foreign to the mill feed.

Previous research developed guide- lines to restrict the placement of air velocity sensors to areas of Low turbulence in underground nines. Even though these guidelines are theoretically correct, and may be easy to follow in underground coal mines, their application in small underground metal mines is difficult. As a result, study was undertaken at the Colorado School of Mines Experimental Mine to determine if an air velocity sensor could be placed in other locations with acceptable results. It was found chat by applying a variable calibration function to correct for changes in amounts of turbulence, instead of the previously used calibration factor multiplication, the sensor could be used successfully in areas of moderate turbulence.

In small coal mining operations, little is done in controlling supply and material inventories and optimizing total inventory costs. Material Requirements Planning (MRP) is an efficient material control system which time-phases net material requirements based upon production plans, bills of material data, and inventory status records. Inventory levels and total inventory costs are optimized using a lot sizing technique in placing time-phased purchase orders. The MRP system has been applied in large manufacturing firms utilizing mainframe computers, but it can be adapted to micro-computers for inventory control. This paper presents an application designed to assist the coal mine manager in optimizing inventory costs.

The field of percussion rock drilling is subdivided into two areas of application; that which takes place on the surface and that which takes place underground. Surface drills are used in quarrying, highway construction, and maintenance work; underground equipment in mining and tunneling work. Two basic principles are involved in the operation of all percussion drills. First, the principle that reciprocates the impacting piston and second, the principle that causes the drill steel and bit to rotate. The back and forth motion of the piston is accomplished by a self-acting automatic valve that admits air alternately to each end of the piston (Figure 1). Drill steel and bit rotation is imparted by an integral ratchet mechanism (Figure 2) in the so-called "rifle bar" machines (Figure 1) or by a separate pneumatic motor in "independent rotation" drills (Figure 3). While rock drills are subject to all kinds of physical and operational abuse, they are most sensitive to faulty lubrication. Proper lubrication is the single most important factor in the longevity of a percussion drill.

This paper reviews the trends in supply and consumption of the principal magnesium compounds in the United States in relation to domestic requirements and world resources. The data are confined to these principal magnesium compounds: Magnesium chloride, magnesium hydroxide, precipitated magnesium carbonate, and magnesium oxide (commonly referred to as magnesia). The properties and uses of magnesium compounds are shown in various chapters of' the 2nd edition of Industrial Minerals end Rocks. 3/ The third edition of this reference is in preparation. A more recent description of properties, uses and sources of magnesium compounds appears in a Bureau of Mines publication.4/ The American Iron and Steel Institute and the Refractories Institute have published comprehensive data on the properties and uses of basic refractories. Many magnesium compounds are prepared by the producers to meet specifications set by individual consumers.

Sedimentation in highly flocculated suspensions of fine particles such as clays occurs through individual settling units (flocs) which have very open structures and correspondingly low density -typically less than 5% solids by volume. It follows that such settling processes rapidly lead to the build-up of a bed of flocs which are essentially close-packed, with inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%, but with an overall solids content of no more than about 2-3 percent by volume. An important consequence is that the thickening process is dominated by the consolidation of this bed rather than by simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate that for a given system, consolidation rates are essentially determined by solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical as well as chemical conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of sediment (i.e. on both height and solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

The greatest part of crushed stone, gravel and sand production is extracted through open pit operations, whereas gravel and sand are also partially extracted from riverbeds. Its obvious that such a mining activity provokes some changes in the configuration and environmental characteristics of the region, in the temporary or permament disapperance of vegetable or animal species and in the creation of noise, dust and waste water. However, the above-mentioned mining operations shouldn not have only negative effects on the landscape and land potential, but they can discover and predetermine the potential of the exploited areas for various communal purposes after exploitation (eg. sports and recreation centers, campsites, resorts, fish-farms, etc.). In this paper, the production of construction aggregates in plants located in the vicinity of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia is presented. The advantages and disadvantages of aggregates? production in urban areas in the spirit of sustainable development are discussed.

Unsegregated pyritic uranium mill tailings from Elliot Lake, Ontario, with and without limestone amendment, were subjected to column leaching experiments for the purposes of predicting the onset of acidic drainage and the magnitude of metal and radionuclide release under various treatment and control strategies. The unamended tailings produced acidic drainage after approximately one and a half year. The tailings mixed with various grain-sized limestone did not produce acidic drainage during the study period. The tailings consist essentially of quartz, K-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite. The unsegregated tailings amended with very fine limestone displayed the least amounts of pyrite loss whereas those without limestone amendment had the greatest pyrite losses. Predicted onset of acid generation varied from 16 to 75 years for the top sections and in most cases greater than 100 years for bottom sections of the unsegregated tailings with limestone amendments. Unsegregated tailings mixed with fine- and very fine-grained limestone proved to be the most effective in controlling or delaying the onset of acidic drainage under unsaturated conditions.

Webster's dictionary nearly equates portland cement with its current primary definition of cement. Although such equation may be a triumph of common usage, the confusion between the terms cement and concrete unfortunately is very widespread. Full definition of cement properly would extend to many substances, but for purposes of this chapter cement is restricted to varieties of portland cement including portland-pozzolan cement. Among the usually recited historical notes concerning cement is that it was developed by the Romans. Their use of cement in the great structures of Rome, and even in the far comers of their Empire, such as Hadrian's Wall in the north of England, testifies to the antiquity of a major cement industry. From English sources we know of John Smeaton's carefully proportioned hydraulic cement mixed in 1756 and of Joseph Aspdin's patented cement to which, in 1824, he gave the name portland cement. (He claimed that his cement mortar looked like the famous dimension limestone quarried from the Isle of Portland on England's south coast.) The year 1971 marked the centennial of portland cement manufacture in the United States. A fair historical account of the many real contributors to the cement industry since 1756 unfortunately would be too extensive for this chapter. Development of rotary kiln practice and burning at higher temperatures clearly was the major move into today's technology. Cement manufacture is the processing of selected and prepared mineral raw materials to produce the synthetic, mineral mixture (clinker) that can be ground to a powder having the specified chemical composition and physical properties of cement. Cement making incorporates a number of distinct steps, but it is characterized by the key pyroprocessing (or burning) step, which brings about the necessary changes in the raw materials. This pyroprocessing is a chemical process. Conversion of large volumes of mineral raw materials into specification-controlled cement at relatively low cost is the objective. Statistics on the cement industry are of uneven quality. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) is the principal collector of available data. These statistics can be only as good as the quality of information supplied by the reporting companies. The data perhaps most often questioned relates to productive capacity of the industry. The questions submitted by USBM are valid, nevertheless, and the information gained from them, as good as is available, is what is generally used. The Portland Cement Association also is a source of much quality information. In analyzing cement industry production rates, it is well to keep in mind that measurement of raw materials requires the reader to recognize that approximately 1.6 t of dry raw materials are required to make 1 t of clinker. This number can vary depending on the amount of kiln dust wasted. Also that to produce 1 t of portland cement required .94 to .96 t of clinker, the remainder being gypsum or anhydrite. A ton of masonry cement or pozzolanic cement re- quires considerably less clinker.

The synthetic rock mass (SRM) approach is a relatively new method to study the mechanical behavior of rock masses. Recently, an SRM approach was established to estimate pillar strength from laboratory scale to in-situ dimension using the two-dimensional Universal Distinct Element Code (UDEC). In this study, the developed methodology is applied to the S-Pillar database to estimate pillar strength and failure mechanisms as a function of width-to-height ratio of the pillars. First, stone mine rocks are categorized into three as low-, medium-, and high-strength according to their uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). Later, laboratory-scale intact rocks are scaled-up to the average in-situ pillar dimensions by explicitly considering the naturally existing joint sets. It is found that the strength of the pillars with low-UCS are overestimated when compared to pillars with high-UCS. This observation is attributed to the high joint density of the pillars with high-UCS. After obtaining in-situ pillar strength, the width-to-height ratios of the pillar models varied from 0.5 to 2.0 to gain a robust understanding of pillar mechanical behavior. Tensile failure is found to govern the pillar behavior with the width-to-height ratio of 0.5 while the combination of tensile failure in rib elements and shear failure in the core

Observations of the land surface show that subsidence over active and abandoned underground mines is controlled to some extent by the stratigraphic and structural geology of the mines in addition to the methods of mining and the thickness of the seam mined. Exposures in highwalls of surface mines that intersect abandoned underground mines in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama illustrate this, showing sandstone beds that act as beams bridging openings and interbedded shale beds crumbling. Stratigraphic changes observed in the district are extremely variable and calculations regarding subsidence used for one area will not apply to another area if there is a major change in rock types Rocks exposed in road cuts and open pit mines demonstrate a marked difference in weathering characteristics. Some rocks, such as shale, wea- ther very rapidly, by crumbling and becoming plastic, whereas other rocks, such as sandstone, resist weathering. The continuing rock weathering after mining in openings produced by the mining activity and in fractures caused by roof movement, apparently, is a major cause of the surface sub- sidence that may occur years after the mines are abandoned.

This paper mainly presents geotechnical aspects of a vehicular underpass that was built across under one of the busiest highway in Hong Kong. The underpass, in a section comprising an upper arch and invert slab, is approximately 6.2 m high at crown and 15 m wide at the base level with 40 m in length. The construction inevitably requires the underpass to be built using tunneling techniques to keep the overheadroad traffic uninterrupted. The paper will describe the design of temporary support for the tunnel excavation that was provided by an arch formed with horizontal pipes, which were installed using the pipe ramming method. The pipes arch was then supported by steel ribs founded on rock or mass concrete. Permanent lining design consideration was also discussed. Results of numerical modeling of the soil-structure interaction using the 2-D computer code FLAC will be presented. The predictions have been compared to the monitored results during construction, which indicates the prediction is in reasonable agreement with the measurement in the light of ground movement. The construction challenges will also be discussed in the paper.
