Fujiwara Quarry had been operated by the "Glory-hole Benchcut" mining system. But because it became difficult to meet the expanding demand by this system, "Central- shaft MCP" mining system was introduced in 1979. This MCP is equipped with a hydraulic walking system manufactured for the first time in Japan. Nowadays "Central-shaft" mining is the common method at limestone quarry in Japan. In this method crushing facilities are usually installed at the bottom of the shaft. But at this quarry, MCP was adopted and installed on the quarry surface. Many MCPs are operated in foreign countries, but in Japan few examples exist. Normally, Japanese limestone deposits lie in high mountains, which is obviously inconvenient for MCP to walk in and around the quarry. This difficulty, however, was overcome at this quarry, and MCP has been operated satisfactorily and efficiently for about 2 years after it was installed. In order to overcome the difficulty, in "Cen¬tral-shaft MCP" mining system, two mining methods are employed, the one is "SLICE-DOWN" mining method, and the other is "BLOCK-CUT" mining method.

Traditionally, water removal has taken a backseat to many other coal mining functions. However, it is a vital part of the total mine support system. In many US coal mines, more tons of water are removed each year than tons of coal. An excellent discussion of general drainage characteristics can be found in Chapter 8 of Elements of Practical Coal Mining, published by SME-AIME. This chapter is organized into three major sections. These are: designing effective drainage systems; constructing the main mine pumping station (static system); and constructing a portable pumping station (dynamic system). Each topic presents a separate discussion of the elements a construction foreman or engineer should consider for effective installation and operation of the mine drainage system. In addition, a list of pumping equipment manufacturers is available to interested persons and follows these sections.

A method of raising by use of a cage has been used with considerable success at the Cary Mine, Hurley, Wisconsin, on the Gogebic Range. The Cary Mine is owned by the Odanah Iron Company, Pickands, Mather and Company, Managers. This method is known to have been used previously at Tennessee Copper and probably in other districts. The Cary Mine was engaged in deepening the main shaft from the 34th to the 37th level. To accomplish this, and to facilitate development, a ventilation shaft 930 feet north of the main shaft was sunk from the 34th to the 37th level and crosscuts were driven on the 35th, 36th and 37th levels to the main shaft location, These levels are at 200 foot verticalintervals. All of this work was done in granite and the majority of the workings were not timbered. The next step was to get a raise through from the 37th to the 36th level, and from the 36th to the 35th level, which would later be stripped to full shaft size. Several methods of raising were considered including double-compartment cribbed and two single raises interconnected at regular intervals, but the cage method was chosen as it appeared to be a safe and efficient operation. The method in general consists in the use of a drill hole between levels through which to pass a hoisting rope to raise and lower a light cage.

Analytical and computer models are used to evaluate information obtained for the design and development of mine water control systems. Geologic, hydrologic, geophysical, biological, and chemical data must be gathered for use during all stages of mine development. Models allow the geohydrologist to use these data to predict the amount of ground-water inflow, the impact of dewatering and stream diversion on the hydrologic regime, equipment needs, and dewatering schedules. Stratigraphic and lithologic changes, faults, recharge and discharge areas, and aquifer parameters should be incorporated into the model to design and develop an effective mine water control system.

Sizing devices used commercially are unfortunately not 100% efficient, the splits that can be obtained are usually inferior to the results obtained in the laboratory. Often the capital and operating costs of equipment capable of high sizing efficiency cannot be justified by the economics or requirements of the process. To reconcile the desired sizing efficiency needed to obtain optimum process requirements with the sizing efficiency of equipment economically practical, it is often necessary or desirable to predict the gradation and weight splits of the products obtained based on the expectant efficiency of the contemplated sizing device or method. The less efficient the sizing device one must employ, the more important it is to know the results that may be expected for the establishment of the optimum flow sheet and the more difficult it becomes to estimate the results accurately. Air classification equipment which sizes materials by opposing the drag force created by an air stream acting on a particle with a combination of gravitational, inertial or centrifugal forces are substantially less efficient than, for example, a laboratory sieve analysis. Air classifiers allow oversize material to contaminate the fine fraction and leave undersize material in the coarse fraction. The techniques employed to predict the gradation and weight splits obtained from air classification outlined below are adaptable to other sizing devices less than 100% efficient such as screens, sifters and wet classifiers.

Many processing techniques have existed for thousands of years. For example, Georgius Agricola, in De Re Metallica (1556), described equipment and techniques, such as picking tables, smelting furnaces and cupolas of various types, sieves, launders. various types of crushers and grinders and other equipment, all still in use in one form or another. In translating Agricola's work into English, the late Herbert C. and Lou Hoover provided the following summary indicating the early history of particular mineral- processing operations :

At present the feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products including toxic waste, oil, nuclear waste and low pressure gas is under investigation in e number of countries. A possible method of storage is in large excavations, Preliminary ventilation design work has identified that the climatic conditions encountered within these large excavations are a limiting ventilation pollutant within the ventilation system. This paper examines the design of a variety of sizes of excavation from a ventilation viewpoint. The main phases of an excavations lifetime can be divided into four main phases, these being construction, civil and mechanical fitting, storage, full and sealed. The paper details ventilation design options for the first two phases of e vaults lifetime, giving climatic simulations to assess the likely climatic conditions within the excavations for e number of facility depths. The options for climatic control are given and analyzed by means of climatic simulations techniques. l. INTRODUCTION The feasibility of developing underground facilities for the storage of a number of products is under investigation at present in a number of countries. This paper details a possible design for such a facility where the product is to be stored in large underground excavations. A facility layout has been designed with the aim of allowing concurrent construction and storage operations. Thus from a ventilation perspective the facility consists of two circuits , a construction ventilation circuit and a product ventilation circuit both of which are served by an intake and a return surface connection The construction and storage circuits are considered as independent of each other , any interaction in the form of leakage must be from the construction to the storage circuit. From the facility design a ventilation network was developed to assess the ventilation requirements of the facility. In analyzing the pollutant loads for the construction circuit two pollutants were recognised to be critical to the ventilation design , these being diesel exhaust fumes and heat end humidity. In this paper ventilation design options for the construction and civil and mechanical fitting phases of the excavations are analyzed by means of climatic simulation and options for climatic control within the vaults are outlined . 2. FACILITY DESIGN A schematic diagram of a facility design is illustrated in Figure 1. There would be two distinct ventilation circuits , one to service the construction operations and the second to serve the storage operations which occur concurrently with construction , the circuits are separated by ventilation bulkheads . Access to the facility for intake air is provided by two drifts, one to serve each circuit. Two shafts act as returns to surface. The facility consists of two distinct zones for the storage of two types of product. One type is to be stored in smell linear excavations. The second zone is for the storage of a second product in larger excavations. The maximum cross-sectional area and perimeter for the smell linear excavations are 456.25 m2 and 83.2 m, while for the larger excavations they are 440.1 m2 and 86.4 m. Excavation construction consists of three phases: 1. Initial pilot tunnel development between main intake and return to provide through flow ventilation. 2. Enlargement to produce the required finished cross-section. 3. Civil and mechanical engineering work to fit out the excavation ready for storage. It is proposed to excavate the excavations using drill and blest methods utilising diesel equipment. Spoil is to be transported to surface by a conveyor belt system. At any one time the maximum number of working places requiring ventilation will consist of ; 3 storage sites, 2 excavations under construction, 2 excavations undergoing civil and mechanical fitting. The friction factor is one of the more difficult parameters to determine in ventilation planning. In practice, this can be estimated from published factors such as those of McElroy. The problem with this approach is that the selection requires some judgement, and the estimated values offer no more than guideline accuracy. This study, examines the effects of four factors on the coefficient of friction for a simulated mine airway. The factors are: airway cross-section, asperity height, flow direction, and cross-cut spacing. The study includes the modeling of a mine airway and the evaluation of the results from 13 experiments on flows of air over rough surfaces. The model, physically represented by a wind tunnel, includes a rough surface section which can be modified to simulate mine airways of various shape and asperity height. Most of the experiments were performed under controlled flow conditions during which the Reynolds number was varied between 50,000 and 300,0000. Based on this study, the friction factor for a mine opening was found to depend not only on the size and shape of the surface asperities but is also affected by the orientation of them in relation to the flow direction.

"The reliable prediction of service lifetime of tunnel constructions is of essential technical and economic interest. Polymers used for tunnel liners have to fulfill the requirement of 100 years lifetime. However, today no reliably proven test method is available which confirms such long lifetimes. The current paper introduces a recently started research project which focuses on lifetime prediction of highly flexible, very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) for tunnel geomembranes. Different PE grades in combination with different antioxidant packages are conditioned at elevated temperatures and immersed in different media. Initial results confirmed significant material aging of unstabilized resins already after exposure of up to 34 weeks, at least at the highest exposure temperature of 80 °C. To consider application relevant material properties the material characterization was done by means of tensile tests and dynamic oxidation induction temperature tests. High pressure liquid chromatography was used for further investigation of antioxidant consumption kinetics. 1. INTRODUCTION For a reliable service of modern tunnel constructions a sustainable proofing against water infiltration is essential for the lifetime of the structure. Geomembranes made of polymeric materials have been used successfully for tunnel lining since several decades. Whereas previous geomembranes usually were made of plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-P), due to several technical advantages today very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) has become a more and more popular material for such applications. For modern geomembranes, current guidelines expect minimum lifetimes of at least 100 years (ÖBV-Richtlinie 2012). In contrast to this requirement it must be considered that today no test methodology is available which reliably confirms such long lifetimes of polymeric materials."

The Zabirah bauxite is a Cretaceous paleolaterite exposed by postTertiary uplift and erosion of the Phanerozoic sequence. The laterite profile, which is preserved in situ, occupies a prominent angular unconformity over a sequence of sandstones, siltstones and mudstones ranging from Late Triassic to Early Cretaceous in age, and is overlain by a Late Cretaceous terrigenous and carbonate package. The profile is known to be preserved over an area of 250 sq km and at depths below the present surface of up to 80 m. The bauxite layer is hard, compact and predominantly pisolitic, with a variety of subordinate, superimposed textures resulting from post-formation alteration. The bauxite minerals are boehmite and gibbsite. Boehmite generally predominates, and the boehmite:gibbsite ratio averages 2:1, with a marked tendency for the proportion of boehmite to increase down the profile. Kaolinite, a major constituent of the profile, is concentrated in two zones, one above and one below the pisolitic bauxite layer. Iron content is variable and bears a direct relationship to parent-rock lithology. Genesis and preservation of the bauxite are due to the favourable coincidence of a number of geological controls of which the most significant are the local structural and sedimentary regimes, the lithology and chemistry of the parent rocks, and the Cretaceous paleogeography of the region.

The Eastern Magnesia Talc Company has always had the problem of adequate storage at its various mines and mills of not only crude ore and finished product but also material in process. An opportunity arose a couple of years ago with the decision to build a new mill at West Windsor, Vermont, (Figure 1) to come as close to providing adequate space for ore and the ground talc in the new plant as money and judgement would allow. Since our engineering staff did not have the time to design and engineer the new facility, an architectural firm with complete engineering staff was retained. Our original thought was to contract all phases of the construction and installation, however, and I think this is a most important point for any small firm such as ours, we found that with good supervision we, as the contractor, could do the job faster and at a lower cost than the construction firms that bid on the work. For some 50 odd years Italian talc has had a virtual monopoly in the body powder area of the cosmetic industry. Due to the purity, superior lubricity and whiteness, naturally occurring in the talc from Italy, no talc in the Western Hemisphere could capture any but a very small part of the market. When the Italian supply was cut off during World War II, the United States' largest consumer of this talc decided that it was time to develop a domestic source of a satisfactory replacement.

To Japan, which is scarce in natural resources, limestone is the only mineral resource comparatively rich in ore reserves and having broadly recognized outstanding quality. Distribution of the limestone deposits extends from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu and Okinawa in the south, and the deposits are located in a manner of framework formation of the Islands of Japan. Studies of the geological ages of these ore deposits reveals that almost all of the main ore deposits west of Kanto Area belong to the Carboniferous Period - Permian Period of the Paleozoic Era. Also in the east of Kanto Area, deposits belonging to the Paleozoic Era constitute the main part, although recently there are increasing examples of reclassifying the geological age of the deposits heretofore considered as Paleozoic Era to the Triassic Period of the Mesozoic Era by the recent discoveries of the fossils of conodont, etc. Large ore deposits and main ore deposit groups are given in the Figure 1, which shows that the deposits are roughly found well distributed throughout the country.

A river delivers a given load of sand, and hence of heavy minerals, into the sea into which it empties. This load is fixed by drainage basin characteristics and processes. Wave energy available for redistributing that load is fixed in an entirely different way. An equilibrium diagram of these two parameters (load versus energy) permits a tentative prediction of what will happen to the heavy minerals. The Chattahoochee River delivers a load which, over the past few thousand years, appears to have been greater than the available coastal energy could handle. As a result, much of the sand has been accumulated in various delta-margin features: barrier islands, beach ridges, and large furrowed off-shore shoals. The bulk of the trapped sand is found today in the shoals, which are attractive deposits for possible exploitation. If coastal energy levels are high enough to move the total load delivered by the river, accumulations of sand (and hence of heavy minerals) should be sought in the down-drift direction. Energy levels are rarely constant over any great length of coast. Decreases in energy may be due to widening of the shelf, convexity of, the shore, restrictions on the fetch, wave decay, or other causes. Such decreases result In deposition. Hydrodynamic mapping of coastal areas, as outlined here, should prove useful in the location of additional reserves. Part of this type of work can be done on maps, charts, and air photos.

"SummaryFor more than a century, ground freezing has been a construction technique used in stabilization of ground by means of lowering the temperature of surrounding soil strata. This technique is used in circumstances where conventional grouting method is unable to achieve the degree of consolidation required to prevent settlement and water ingress during the execution of underground excavation. Whilst ground freezing is effective in imparting self-supporting characteristics to the excavation profile, it poses significant challenges when it comes to the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) where sprayed concrete is used to support the freshly excavated ground. Sprayed concrete, if used in an appropriate manner, provides a fast, efficient and structurally-reliable means of supporting the structure, especially in underground construction. The evolvement in sprayed concrete technology is attributed to the development of concrete know-how, improvement of spraying technique with the use of automation spraying equipment, more in-depth understanding of sprayed concrete behavior and enhancement of materials used in production of high quality sprayed concrete Not only has this markedly escalated the prominence of sprayed concrete on wider perspective,. the positive development has also pushed sprayed concrete beyond its boundaries, enabling it to be embarked on area of application not considered possible decades ago. Nevertheless, sprayed concrete, for all its placement versatility, still depends largely on the technicality provision very similar to concrete to achieve the required quality. Parameters such as raw material grading composition, curing temperature and cement quality are some of the factors that can easily sway the quality of concrete from one extreme to another. Conducive ambient temperature is critical in ensuring optimum hydration of concrete. This is more important in sprayed concrete where temperature plays a pivotal role in influencing the early strength and long term strength development. The low temperature imposed by ground freezing is everything but ideal for competent hydration to take place. This paper outlines how the innovative use of sprayed concrete helps to overcome the adverse ambient temperature in the construction of a 110m underground pedestrian walkway utilizing ground freezing technique in Hong Kong."

There are certain data handling techniques used by statisticans that can help one to calculate the size of an orebody and to develop some of the relationships between size, cutoff grade, average grade, mining cost, and profit. Knowing the relationships amongst these factors can help determine the most desirable operating conditions. A statistical technique that we will use is data grouping. This allows us to work with relatively few groups instead of many samples, If we were able to segregate the ore in an orebody into grade groups, add the amounts in each group, and plot the sums as a curve, we would get something like Figure 1. A smooth curve develops when the grade classes are small enough, otherwise a "stair step? histogram results. The area under the curve, being the sum of the tonnages in all of the grade classes, is proportional to the total number of tons in the orebody. If we take the data of a distribution such as Figure 1 and add the tonnages above a specific grade we have in effect a cutoff grade

Technological innovation in the minerals industry must be driven by the need to improve performance according to social, as well as environmental, safety, efficiency and production criteria. This paper outlines the possibilities and rationale for incorporating constructive technology assessment into technology research and development within the CSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship (MDU). The paper develops a process of Social License in Design that attempts to address the future social challenges and opportunities of a technology during development by utilising forecasting techniques and accounting for the perspectives and values of decision makers and likely stakeholders. Interviews with senior technologists and social scientists within MDU reveal the institutional context into which the Social License in Design process is to be situated and highlight key factors that may inhibit or enhance its uptake.

With renewed interest in coal slurry pipelines in China, Indonesia, Australia and Canada for electric generation, it appears worthwhile to update the relative economics of transporting coal by slurry pipeline. Three slurry pipeline technologies are evaluated for the commercial transportation of 3.0, 6.0, and 9.0 million tonnes per year (MMT A) example cases, over distances of 250 km, 500 km and 1000 km.

Barite deposits in Nevada occur as bedded and vein-types along a north-northeastern -trending zone which parallels the Antler orogenic belt The bedded deposits of Nevada are the most significant economically. They are presently supplying eighty-five percent of the domestic barite production which is used primarily as a weighting agent in the petroleum drilling industry. The ore bodies are controlled both structurally and stratigraphically, occurring along regional and local structural breaks in siliceous eugeosynclinal rocks of mid-Paleozoic age. Evidence for origin of the barite includes sedimentary and hydrothermal features indicating that localization probably took place along fractures in the seafloor.
