Auriferous sulfide ores often contain very finely disseminated gold and other precious metal particles inside the sulfide crystals. The encapsulation of precious metal particles gives rise to the refractory nature of such ores to current extraction methods. As a result, these fractions are frequently lost in the tailings. The purpose of this work was to investigate the feasibility of pretreating these refractory tailings with bioleaching before employing standard extraction techniques such as cyanidation. Leadville gold ore tailings containing auriferous pyrite were first concentrated by froth flotation. The pyrite concentrate was treated for different periods of time with 12 weeks adapted thiobacillus ferrooxidans before cyanide leaching. The bioleaching of the concentrate before cyanide leaching increased the gold extraction from 32% to 95% and that of silver from 48% to more than 98%.

Investment in minerals development usually entails big financial outlays. which will remain at risk for a long time before the venture can begin to generate a return cash flow. Before 'committing himself to such a venture the investor would be wise to carefully examine the possible consequences of his exposure to risk. In this context risk is defined in multiple terms, which relate the magnitude of possible loss with the probability that such loss may occur--normally the probability will decrease as the amount of possible loss increases. The analysis of risk is an essential component of the decision making process, especially so in the case of low grade high tonnage mining ventures where a very real possibility exists that future unfavorable circumstances may lead to losses that could cripple or ruin even the richest corporation. Wells (1979) postulates a rationale for making the investment decision under uncertainty based on the comparison of two independent risk criteria: 1) the risk inherent in the venture represented by the negative portion of the cumulative distribution of the net present value (NPV), as derived by a stochastic evaluation procedure, 2) the limits of risk the decision maker is willing to accept, taking account of the financial capacity-of the 'firm to absorb various levels of future cash shortfall should the venture prove disappointing. The chance the investor would be prepared to accept can be expected to decrease as the amount of the possible shortfall increases. The limits of acceptable risk are-defined by a curve called the "LL-curve" which can be directly compared with the cumu¬lative NPV curve. A positive investment decision is implied if the limits of acceptable risk are not exceeded.

The Pb-Zn-Ag deposits within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic strata of central Colorado (Leadville, Gilman, Aspen, and others) occur principally in Late Mississippian karst-solution features within dolomites and, to a lesser extent, limestones. Several un- conformities within the Devonian and Mississippian carbonate rocks and the subregional dolomitization of the Leadville (Mississippian) Formation that occurred during the Late Mississippian resulted from recurrent uplift of elements of the Ancestral Sawatch, Gore, and Front Range areas within central Colorado. Uplift of these areas also strongly influenced the details of the extensive karst topography that developed during the Late Mississippian. In particular, uplift of the Sawatch Range area caused paleovalleys from 300-600 ft deep to form on the karst landscape. The pattern of karst-solution caverns, sinkholes, cutters, channelways, and breccia-rubble zones was strongly controlled by incision of surface drainages and the strong northeast-trending Mississippian joint system. These subterranean karst-solution features and breccia-rubble soil [ ] zones are the primary controls of the location of the Pb-Zn-Ag ore deposits in these rocks. In the Leadville and Aspen districts, the deeply incised paleovalleys occur immediately adjacent to the principal areas of mineralization. Pennsylvanian deposition of a thick terrigenous and evaporite sequence occurred within central Colorado in response to actively subsiding extensional basins and adjacent high-relief uplift areas. Hot brines developed within the Pennsylvanian strata, migrated laterally to, and moved upward vertically along, basin- margin faults during continued Pennsylvanian subsidence and deposition. These metal-rich brines migrated into karst-solution features within the Lower and Middle Paleozoic dolomites and limestones, principally within the Leadville Formation, in basin- edge uplifted locales where the Pb-Zn-Ag minerals were precipitated. Field relationships, mineral assemblages and paragenesis, fluid-inclusion data, and isotope studies suggest that the metals and brines were derived within the Pennsylvanian sedimentary sequence and that the ore minerals were deposited under different temperatures and at different depths from deposit to deposit. Chemical reaction with the carbonate cave sediment and wallrock, cooling of fluid temperatures, and mixing with meteoric ground waters were the probable combined causes of mineral deposition in the karst-solution features. Late Cretaceous-Tertiary intrusive activity has subsequently modified some of the primary Pb-Zn-Ag deposits in local areas.

Power consumption of stirred media mills has been studied by an approach developed from work on stirred reactors. Relationships between torque required to rotate both disc and pin impellers immersed in dense particulate media as a function of speed, impeller and tank dimensions, and other relevant variables are evaluated. Data collected during numerous different experimental conditions are analyzed. The results can be summarized and presented in the form of characteristic plots, general equations and dimensionless group correlations involving power and modified Reynolds numbers. Special attention is directed towards the rheological properties of the media, which is considered as non-Newtonian liquids and hence, the equation of power law liquids is employed. Procedure for estimating parameters of effective viscosity and scale-up guidelines with respect to power consumption are put forward.

Drilling was not entirely satisfactory in the search for native copper in the Osceola amygdaloid footwall as mining showed oreshoots to be more continuous than drilling indicated. The Geophysics Department of Michigan Technological University developed a portable induced polarization drill hole probe with a 3 electrode configuration and a sampling radius of 5'± A 20 ma current of alternately reversed polarity is pulsed at 3.5 sec. intervals and readings are taken every two feet. Potential is read during the "on" cycle for resistivity determinations. During the "off" cycle, after 10 ms delay, the I.P. potential is sampled for 10 ms and recorded. Resistivity (ohm-feet) and "S" values (mv/v) are plotted on semi-log paper. A lithologic log is plotted based on resistivity and anomalous "S" values noted. The low resistivity amygdaloid contains sills of high resistivity basaltic trap. Verified by core logs, amygdaloid-trap contacts could be picked to ±.5' from resistivity alone. Lithologic logs of long steel holes, based' on resistivity, now replaced sludge logging. An "S" value of 30 mv/v was established as the lower limit of diagnostic I.P. effects in mineralized amygdaloid and 50 mv/v as a threshold value for ore. Of 914 footwall zones drilled, 315 were probed yielding 203 anomalies. Success increased from 34% for drilling to 72% for drilling and probing. As checked by mining, 46 probe results were 78% correct. Failures were due to the instrument not detecting copper or to the misinterpretation of an anomaly. No false anomalies were found.

The research work reported in in this paper deals with the monitoring of roof behavior in a drift mine located in Eastern Kentucky operating in the Coalburg Seam. The thickness of the seam at the monitoring site ranges between 9 and 10 feet with the immediate roof changing from sandstone to shale then back to sandstone. Shale thickness varies between 0 and 2.5 feet. The characteristics of the immediate shaly roof were monitored with 38 dynamometers which were set up in three survey lines to cover the entire range of shale distribution. The dynamometers are capable of providing accurate load readings in the range of +/- 5 pounds. To closely observe the contribution of moisture toward roof deterioration the dynamometers were set up in intake and neutral airways. A television borescoping camera was used in conjunction with the dynamo- metric instrumentations at pre- determined observation holes to physically observe and record the separation process of the shale and sandstone stratum with respect to time. Monitoring took place between January 1985 through January 1986 in order to cover a full cycle of dry and wet mine conditions associated with the seasonal changes. Analysis of the data show a trend of roof deterioration induced by condensation and eventual penetration of moisture within the immediate roof bedding planes, leading to rapid disintegration of the mine roof.

An underground storage field is a gas field where man, not nature, has put all or most of the gas. All but one of those in use today are in the pore spaces or "porosity" of sedimentary rocks, the most common being sandstone. The one exception, near Newcastle, England, is a gas storage in a cavern dissolved from rock salt. The tens of millions of barrels of LPG (liguified petroleum gas) now stored in salt caverns mined in shale is liquid storage, not gas storage, and in this paper I recognize the presence of these installations but do not include them in the gas storage category, Since, with the English exception, gas storages are gas fields, they can all be sorted into the categories used to describe gas fields, 95% of them once gas fields anyway, but some of the remaining 5% are the ones having the greatest effects on underground waters.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. Rebinder's method) equals 150 to 500 Pa. The plasticity strength 10 days after preparation is ? 0.15 MPa. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. We are currently doing work on three ways to improve the performance of our froth flotation systems. One development is the use of a cationic flocculent added to the feed of the froth cells. This does give some improvement in ash of the product particularly in a situation where there is a good bit of clay present. Difficulty is usually experienced with clay carrying over with the water contained in the froth product and also adhering to the coal surfaces. Addition of the flocculent to the flotation feed preferentially flocculates the clay causing it to drop into the tails. The results of some laboratory test work on Pittsburgh 88 Seam coal in Eastern Ohio is shown in Table 1. [ ]

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. In recent years the procedures for functionally designing bulk storage bins and hoppers have evolved from qualitative guess and try methods to a quantative method based on theory and tests of the bulk solid to be stored. This quantative method, developed and implemented by Dr.'s A. W. Jenike and J. R. Johanson as with any new design, must prove its effectiveness and validity in the actual operation of the finished equipment. How accurate are the theoretical predictions? Is it possible to extrapolate from bench size tests on a small ample of the bulk solid to the full scale bin design? Can the theoretical designs be economically translated into working hardware? In this paper the answers to these questions are discussed in light of actual bin operations.

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California is designing new outlet facilities for Lake Mathews, including a junction shaft, connecting tunnels, and an ear-shore outlet tower. Since Lake Mathews must remain operational during construction, groundwater inflow potential is a concern. This paper describes the challenges and methods used to investigate rock mass and groundwater conditions at an operational reservoir, where offshore and onshore geotechnical exploration was performed. Several investigative and analytical methods were used to characterize rock mass and groundwater conditions, including rock coring, downhole geophysical and video surveys, hydraulic conductivity testing, automated groundwater level monitoring, and laboratory testing.

Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled- waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SB) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

"An ore is a rock regardless of its rarity or value."* The application of geology does not cease with the discovery and delineation of a mineral resource, but continues in the calculation of the economic parameters that determine reserves. Reserve determination, reduced to essentials, is the determination of the cost of production of a mineral commodity from a resource. This cost comprises mining, processing, waste disposal, reclamation and marketing costs. Geological input is vital in the calculation of the individual cost parameters from mining to reclamation, and even has some impact on marketing. Geology thus has a critical role in the determination of reserves.

A positive pressure ventilation system, augmented by a dewatering well curtain and underground longhole drilling, provides effective ventilation and radon control at EXXON Minerals Company's Highland Underground Mine in the Southern Powder River Basin of Wyoming. Testing different types of bulkheads, sealants, and bleeder systems has led to improvements in the basic ventilation system. Continued testing of new or different materials and equipment is expected to lead to further improvement in the ventilation program. Effective training of both miners and supervisors is essential to maintaining and improving ventilation techniques. This paper addresses the ongoing ventilation program and experience to date at the Highland Uranium Mine.

Of the variables affecting the electrical properties of coal measure rocks, water content is by far the most important, This paper describes specially developed apparatus and methods of measuring electrical conductivity and permittivity at constant humidity conditions. Electrical properties variations were measured for Applachian and Illinois, U.S.A. coal 2 basin samples in the frequency range 2 X 10 to 2 X 10 Hz. Coal measure rock electrical behavior, when correlated with mechanical behavior, is potentially useful in a number of mining applications.

In 1959, The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (Aus. I.M.M.) was asked by the Federal Government of Australia and the State Government of South Australia to join in the formation and management of a new contract research organization which was subsequently named The Australian Mineral Development Laboratories (Arndel) ? This body was formerly the Research and Development Branch of the South Australian Department of Mines which had been set up to develop the Radium Hill uranium deposit. It had then gone into contract R&D and the State felt that it would be more appropriate for the Branch to become a separate national organization. The Aus. I.M.M. decided that a professional institute could not participate directly in Arndel and, as there was no other suitable industry group to do so, it formed the. Australian Mineral Industries Research Association Limited (AMIRA). AMIRA held its first Annual General Meeting in September 1959 when the first Council was elected and the Memorandum and Articles of Association were adopted. The initial task of AMIRA was to raise guarantees of work or cash from its members to underwrite Arndel for the first five years of operation. The Federal and State Governments also provided guarantees and Arndel commenced operations in January 1960.

Investigations of fine grinding of bituminous coal in a laboratory-scale pulverizer are described. The results indicate essentially "normal" breakage behavior at relatively coarse sizes (greater than about 20 µm) but show clear evidence for re-agglomeration in the fine size range (less than about 10 µm). A simplified population balance model for simultaneous growth and breakage has been formulated. Breakage rates and breakage distributions are assumed to follow the patterns typically observed in simple grinding systems. It is recognized, however, that solid particles and agglomerates may exhibit different breakage behavior. Agglomeration rates are assumed to be determined by contact probability, i.e. by the relative numbers of interacting particles. Based on comparisons of model simulations and experimental data, it appears that agglomerate re-breakage rates and fragment size distributions are quite different from those for solid particles. The result is that product size passes through a minimum and then increases with time as agglomeration begins to dominate.

The methodology and results of a feasibility study of an Automatic Truck Dispatching (ATD) system in an actual open pit mining operation, are presented. Using mine cost data, an economic analysis confirms that capital and operating cost savings with ATD out-weigh the costs. Productivity improvement achievable with ATD is quantified with a computer simulation of truck haulage based on mine production and operational data.

Although systematic control of ventilating air currents in underground mines dates back to the Greek and Roman empires, quantified analysis dealing with the cost of providing airflow did not appear until about 1860 when the first fans with acceptable efficiencies became available. Initially, these were introduced to avert methane explosions initiated by shaft bottom furnaces. However, discussions arose on how much coal the steam driven fans consumed in comparison with shaft furnaces in order to produce the sane amount of airflow. Ventilation economics had arrived. In 1981/82 a project was funded by the Department of Energy and carried out at the University of California, Berkeley in order to analyze and compare alternative ventilation designs from the viewpoint of economics and systems efficiency1. This paper highlights some of the results of that study.
