"A lot of incorrect, dangerous and misleading statements about the effect of CO2 on the human body can still be found in the internet, the media and in books. It is a fact that already low concentrations can lead to critical reactions, higher concentrations cause a narcosis. The real effect is not a lack of oxygen but an inner suffocation. The breathing reflex is decreased and the transport of oxygen in the blood is reduced due to a low pH value of the blood. Furthermore a reduced oxygen content in the air can also lead to the failure of diesel engines. MOTIVE Different gases can appear in active mines as well in abandoned mines, adits and caves. The most dangerous gases are CO, NO/NO2, H2S, SO2, CH4 and CO2. Although the general danger arising from these gases is mostly known some aspects are underestimated. Furthermore misleading or wrong statements exist about the detection and the effect of gases on the human body. This is especially true for CO2. In the last years a couple of accidents happened with a great number of injured persons and unfortunately also some fatalities. As a result wrong information and comments about the effect of CO2 have been published in the media. A huge unexpected CO2 outburst in a potash mine showed again some additional problems and limits for rescue troops. ORIGIN OF CO2 AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE HUMAN BODYCarbon dioxide can appear as free gas in the earth crust. It is especially known in significant concentrations in some potash deposits, in hard coal mines and some caves. Furthermore it can be formed due to complete oxidation of carbon. It can appear in technical processes. It is also used for or in technical processes, as fire extinguishing agent, as cooling agent, it is contained (added) in sparkling water or other soft drinks and it is formed by fermentation processes. Up to today a lot of wrong information about the effect of CO2 on the human body is published or is still in the mind of many people and unfortunately even in the mind of members or leaders of rescue troops. On August 16th 2008 a faulty CO2 extinguishing installation in the city of Mönchengladbach/Germany caused the injury of 107 people and the evacuation of further 150 people /1/. People on the streets became unconsciousness and felt down. Fortunately all could be rescued due to the immediate rescue operation of local fire fighters. Furthermore the CO2 concentration on the ground was diminished by help of a helicopter. What could have happen with the engine will be discussed later. After 6 days a second similar accident took place /2/. In the news members of the rescue teams explained that CO2 leads to suffocation due to a lack of oxygen. This is wrong! Also cave explorers often say that a burning candle can detect a low oxygen and/or high Carbon dioxide content in the air. This is also wrong and deadly dangerous! Similar statements we find nowadays in the internet /3, 4 and many other/. In a forum “science and mathematics > chemistry” several people say that winegrowers go with a candle into the vine-cellar to detect CO2 /5/. Again: this can be deadly! Another dangerous statement is that CO2 in higher concentrations leads to headaches so people should leave such areas. A last example found in the literature is that at 3 % the breathing volume is doubled and at a concentration of 20 % one can felt some warmth on the skin. Both is not wrong but can lead to false conclusions. /6/"

The study investigates the effects of high-velocity impacts of common mine materials on a reinforced mine seal rated to 120 psi. It found that materials propelled during an underground explosion could generate enough stress to crack or damage seals, even with little visible damage. This highlights the need for careful evaluation of mine seals after any impact or high-pressure event.

Paper presents project results investigating current techniques for dragline wire rope removal and the development of less hazardous means of performing the task. The cannon is the most prevalent method used in American surface mines. A cannon test program was conducted that used 40-and 50-grain primer cord to establish force produced using a 56-pound projectile. Socketlwedges were separated to establish separation force data. Two alternative removal methods, pendulum ram and portable hydraulic pusher, were developed and tested. Both provide sufficient force to effect separations under normal conditions on draglines with up to 78- cubic yard buckets.

There are certain site-specific geological and physical features of a rock mass which control its behavior under the dynamic stresses induced by the action of explosives. It is essential that blasting technology be adapted specifically to those features. There does not exist a single, simple "right" way for each type of blasting operation, but rather each operation must be custom-designed for each site. When this is done, it is often possible to produce unusual but highly desirable end resglts, such as undisturbed narrow rock walls, monoliths and square benches. Although the techniques illustrated here were developed specifically for "sculpture blasting", the geomechanics principles would apply to other types of blasting control, both large-scale and small-scale. Because the techniques are designed more for the purpose of modifying the site responses which would ordinarily be expected than they are to developing new "blasting formulae?, the name "Modified Site Response Blasting" will be used.

The underground fire areas are formed as a result of failure of an active fire extinguishing in mines. Such areas bring about a fire hazard for the work safety and for the mining operations. For liquidation of fire areas it is necessary to create conditions under which a possibly small amount of air is flowing to the fire. To achieve this end, isolation methods are used which consist in erection of full stoppings of various types, sealing practically the fire areas. These methods usually fail in oases when the coal seam is thick and the fire area is situated between the intake shaft and the outtake shaft in which a high-pressure fan is in operation. In such oases ventilation methods based on the balance of aerodynamic potentials in fire areas are to be used. For a very long time the isolation and ventilation methods have been developed in the world mining, No sooner than since 1980 the aerodynamic potential has been used in ventilation methods [1,2,6]. So far, the aerodynamic potential was called in different ways and was determined by different formulae which gave its numerical values more or less approximative. Nevertheless, even in situations featuring by a lack of sufficient theoretical bases of the aerodynamic potential the ventilation methods brought considerable profits in the field of safety in mines and of economics in mine ventilation [1-6,9,10]. The increase in the depth of underground mines and their equipment with expensive machines (apparatus) brought about that the Central Mining Institute at Katowice undertook research works which are crowned by the theory of the aerodynamic potential in mine ventilation networks [7]. The use of this theory in the mentioned ventilation methods will increase their effectiveness. Since the theory will be published in the III rd quarter of this year, we cite in the present paper the formulae and relations associated with this theory which are indispensable to present the balance of aerodynamic potentials in the fire areas in their control by ventilation methods.

The Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration held the 13th MPD Student Poster Contest on March 1, 2023, during the MINEXCHANGE 2023 SME Annual Conference & Expo. The event showcased the work of 24 graduate and undergraduate students from U.S. and international institutions. The contest began in January when the students submitted one‐page abstracts for judging. In February, they prepared and presented posters that explained their research, and each student had five minutes to showcase their research to a panel of judges during the conference. In recognition of their efforts, the MPD provides monetary rewards to all participants. For graduate students, first place receives $1,000, second place $500, and third through seventh places $200 each, and for undergraduate students, first place receives $1,000 and second place $500. The main authors of nonplacing entries receive $125 each. Participation in the contest also includes a free ticket to the MPD Luncheon, where the winners are announced.

"With decades of development and exploitation of coal resources, the first batch of coal-based cities in China are faced with the challenge of economic shrinkage and environment deterioration due to the rapid resource exhaustion and single industrial structure. Nowadays, as a policy instrument for sustainable development, a nationwide circular economy mode has been implemented during the design and planning of new coal mines to address the challenges arising from economic depression, energy shortage and environmental pollution. It should be mentioned that several national coal bases and most of constructing and planning coal mines are located in the underdeveloped areas in the Midwest of China which means that the distance between supply source for energy resources and the demand market is significantly increased. Moreover, the eco-environment vulnerability in these rural areas should be taken into serious consideration. Therefore, after comparison and analysis with several successful coals based and diversified circular industry chains, this paper presents a case study on the circular economy park (CEP) in the northwest of Shanxi Province. Through discussion and evaluation of ‘1+3’ mode in the CEP, this paper aims to enhance the understanding of coal mine sustainable development and shed light on the relationship between resources exploitation and local economic development.1. Introduction Earth's fossil energy resources are crucial to both economic prosperity and human well-being. Taking coal mining and consumption as an example, coal has been widely used to generate electricity since the 1880s, and more than 40% of the electricity globally is provided by coal nowadays. However, as one of the largest worldwide anthropogenic sources of carbon dioxide releases (39% of global CO2 emissions), the extensive excavation and utilization of coal have brought a series of side effects to both natural environment and human health (Wikipedia 2017). As the largest coal producer and consumer in the world, China is leading the list over the past decade (as shown in Figure 1) (BP 2016). The excavation and utilization of coal resources have made a crucial impact and irreplaceable contributions to China’s industrial development and economic prosperity (Long and Zhang 2009). However, most of the air pollution in China are also attributed to the simplified and extensive exploitation of coal resources, e.g., 90% of SO2, 67% of NO, 70% of smoke ashes, and 70% of CO2 in 2016. In recent years, most of North China and the developed coastal areas were wreathed by smog due largely to the oversimplified extensive utilization of coal, suggesting that the development patterns of coal utilization need to be reshaped so that both the biosphere and humanity could thrive equally."

Modern coal processing plants utilize multiple cleaning circuits to efficiently beneficiate different size coal fractions of run-of-mine coal. An older plant optimization approach is to maintain average product quality from individual cleaning circuits at the same level as the given product specifications for the overall plant. However, many past studies indicate that the equalization of product quality approach fails to produce the maximum plant-yield. A newer approach, known as equalization of incremental product quality, requires that the incremental product quality obtained from each circuit be maintained at the same level to satisfy the overall plant product quality. This approach ensures the maximization of plant yield while satisfying a single product quality constraint. However, while dealing with multiple product quality constraints, this approach by itself may not be sufficient to obtain the desired maximum yield. For the simple reason that the dirtiest particle (or group of particles) with respect to one quality constraint may not be the same particle (or group of particles) with respect to another quality constraint, the mass yield versus product quality relationship generated by equalizing different incremental product quality may not be exactly the same. Therefore, an additional search technique has to be utilized to determine the global-maximum value of plant yield. Thus, the main objective of this study was to utilize an emerging optimization technique, known as genetic algorithms (GA) to maximize plant yield while satisfying multiple product quality constraints. The maximum plant yield obtained from this approach was nearly same as the maximum yield obtained by the incremental product quality approach while satisfying one specific product quality constraint. The GA was applied on a coal preparation plant that utilizes four circuit operations - heavy medium bath, heavy medium cyclone, spiral and froth flotation. The results showed that using GA as an optimization process gives 2.56% higher yield that will result in additional revenue generation of $5,120,000 per annum than average product quality approach.

On reflection of certain overall circumstances which have pervaded the gold mining industry, it appears useful to point out some specifics which the writer hopes will improve the potential for success in the application of hydraulic dredges to gold mining activity. I will, prior to entering into that discussion, comment briefly on rule of thumb for the application of the three types of equipment. The three are bucket line, bucket wheel and drag line dredges. From a standpoint of high volume movement over a short distance, between 50 and 300 feet, the drag line dredge is historically the most cost effective type of machine to be utilized if bulk excavation is the single driving consideration. It is typical for this sort of equipment to operate in the 10 to 30 cents per cubic yard range, however, cost of operation is not the sole consideration. Typically the drag line mixes and remixes the material which it excavates. In the event that gold recovery is the object of the exercise, a strong potential for loss of the valued mineral exists. Additionally, drag lines do a poor job of bottom cleaning, particularly if there is a ridged or creviced bottom which must be cleaned and in some cases partially removed to assure recovery of the highest percent of valuable ore. The bucket line dredge has, until recently, been considered an extremely cost effective device. INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. During the last ten years, Paques Inc. has been engaged in the development and installation of treatment systems to remove sulfur compounds from water and gaseous streams using biotechnological processes. Metal and sulfate can be removed from mine waters in two biological steps. In the first step, sulfate-reducing bacteria converts sulfate to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). The HS reacts with the dissolved metals to form insoluble metal sulfide precipitates. In the second step, sulfide-oxidizing bacteria convert excess H2S to elemental sulfur. The Budelco Zinc Refinery in The Netherlands installed a groundwater treatment system to remove metals and sulfate using the biological steps described above. The system has been operating since May 1992 and has been treating 5,000 m3/d (180 thousand cu ft/day). A pilot plant began operation in November 1995 at Kennecott's Bingham Canyon Utah copper mine to develop processes for metal and sulfate removal from groundwater and for the selective copper recovery from leach water. Amax Gold's Sleeper Mine was brought to production as an open pit mining, cyanidation milling operation in March 1986. The Sleeper deposit is unique in that it contains zones of very high grade gold ore. Despite blending of ore, mill head grades have varied over a broad range. These grade variations were anticipated during mill design and affected, in particular, the sizing and selection of equipment for the CIP circuit. When grades proved to be even higher than anticipated, design operating parameters were adjusted shortly after start-up to accommodate the higher grades. Operating results have been excellent: during the first 18 months of operations the Sleeper mill has processed 375,600 tons of ore and produced 229,000 ounces of gold.

INTRODUCTION Concentration of radon 222Rn and its decay products occuring in the Polish mines of metal-ores call for the necessity of systematic radiation control /Do8la/ both of the working environment and of the miners' personal exposure. The attempts at introducing a system of radiological protection in mines, similar to the ones existing in X-ray or isotope laboratories, took several years and consisted of development of the methods for control of concentration of radon and its progeny in the air, as well as the methods for measuring individual exposure. It was accepted that the assessment of both transient concentration in the air and of personal exposure are basic elements of the control system, which should be implemented independently of each other. Concentration measurement serves to detect and to determine those areas in mines where there is intensive radon emanation, and where current control of the effectiveness of technology introduced to deacrease the concentrations is necessary; personal dosimetry results in the assessment of the actual exposure of miners to radiation. PRINCIPLES OF THE SYSTEM The assessment of working environment is based on concentration measurements of the potential radiation energy of radon alpha decay products. Decentralized assessment is carried out by the special dosimetric service operating in each mine. Dosimetrists are equipped with portable radiometers, type RGR-11, made by the institute of Nuclear Research, Warsaw. The radiometer is presented in Fig. 1. Measurement of filter activity is performed automatically according to Markov's method /Ma62/ or any other method. Simultaneously to potential energy measurement the dosimetrists are measuring the dust concentration in the air and ventilation rate. Ventilation service looks for correlation between those indices and the concentration of radon daughters in the air. Derived Air Concentration /DAC/ for concentration assessment was accepted to be 6.25 10-6 Jm-3 /0.3 WL/ according to ICRP recommendation /Publication No. 24/ /ICRP77/. If environmental measurements reveal potential energy concentration exceeding the value of 0.3 DAC at working places, the miners employed there are subject to individual control of personal exposure. Individual exposure measurement is carried out centrally by the Institute of Occupational Medicine in [Lodz] for all metal-ore mines. INTRODUCTION In any mining operation all possible steps should be taken to increase efficiency. One area for improvement is mine planning and design, particularly in the area of equipment selection for room-and-pillar systems. Be- cause of the availability of a wide variety of face machines, a fair degree of selectivity can be exercised in the choice of equipment for a particular job. However, this choice must be made on the basis of quantitative facts and forecasts related to the mining application. The purpose of this section is to develop and analyze the details of the mining process. Some specific areas studied include the relationship of system design to productivity, suboptimization as a result of equipment changes, and measurement of system performance. The plan of work leading to a quantitative description of these study areas is based on the growing interest in total system design using simulation as an analytical method (Manula, 1963). CHARACTERISTICS OF PRODUCTION OPERATIONS FROM ROOM-AND-PILLAR SECTIONS For a given mining method, raw production in a given section of a mine is primarily dependent upon the coal seam thickness, roof and floor conditions, methane emission, the mining methods, and the man-machine element. Average section production varies from 300 to 800 st per shift for conventional and continuous mining in high seams and from less than 100 to 300 st per shift in low seams. Since the reject varies from 0 to 40%, these figures must be decreased by the appropriate percentage to reflect the amount of clean coal mined. Personnel requirements per production section per shift for the various methods are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Seven critical independent variables which determine production can be identified and categorized (Suboleski, 1978) : Seam Height The five categories are as follows: less than 36 in.;. 36 to 55 in.; 55 to 100 in.; 100 to 180 in.; and greater than 180 in. Floor Quality Floor quality ranges from : Excellent: Smooth, hard, grades less than 1 to 1 % % , and dry. Good: Smooth, soft but dry, with grades less than 3 % . The floor will deteriorate, but cautious operation can prevent it. There may possibly be heaving at some later time. Fair. Soft and damp. There is occasional interference with equipment operation; requires the use of four-wheel drive shuttle cars; ruts with regular use, and may have adverse grades of 5 to 7%. This may be coupled with slippery bottom and/or occasional steep rolls. Poor: Soft and wet. Requires blocking of the bottom to support equipment. There are frequent steep rolls and grades in excess of 7%. Roof Quality Roof quality ranges from : Excellent: Men are able to work under the unsupported top during the initial production cycle if legally permitted. Good: The roof is bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern with short bolts (442 in.) or <seam height if the seam >42 in., or requires posting with no bolts on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern. There are no falls. Average: The roof is normally bolted on a 4 x 4 or 5 x 5 pattern, but with long bolts (>seam height or >6 ft.). There are infrequent minor falls or there may be an excellent roof which is difficult to drill. Fair: This type often requires spot bolting in addition to the regular pattern or bolting with planks. The roof conditions require shorter than planned cuts, or narrow cuts. Poor: This type requires bolts plus crossbars and posts, or installation of yielding supports or truss-type support. It is almost certain to fall if this is not done. Methane Liberation This ranges from none detected to low (no buildup at the face, even with minimum ventilation requirements) to moderate (the curtains must be extremely tight and tubing close to the face or methane will build up to 1 % during the loading of the car) to high (methane will build up to 170 if the miner is operated at the normal rate, even with proper ventilation). Hardness of Coal Coal hardness falls into the following categories: Soft: Soft coal is easily cut by a continuous miner. A plow could be used by longwall. Average: Coal of average hardness could be easily cut by a miner, and a shearer would be used in the longwall. Moderate: Moderately hard coal causes difficult cut-

A large number of minerals and chemicals (Table 1), some mineral-derived, are used in the treatment of both potable water and domestic sewage waste water and solids (Anon., 1990). In water treatment there are ten principal process uses as shown in Table 2 (Anon., 1990), which also lists the major chemicals in each process. Since lime (calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide, and dolomitic lime) is the largest chemical (by tonnage) used in water treatment, this chapter will deal primarily with this product. Note that it is included in five of the process uses shown in Table 2, and that indirectly it is also used in at least one other category (taste and odor control, where lime is used with potassium permanganate to provide optimum pH condition). POTABLE WATER TREATMENT Water Softening The biggest use for lime in water treatment involves water softening, where it serves to reduce carbonate hardness caused by dissolved bicarbonate and carbonate compounds. Currently there are more than 1000 domestic water softening plants (Table 3) located in most sections of the country, but particularly in Ohio, other midwestern states, Florida, and Texas, where limestone bedrock abounds (Anon., 1990). Among the other uses for lime in water treatment are coagulation, disinfection, and removal of heavy metals due to high pH softening, removal of certain radioactive and organic compounds and fluorides, neutralization of acidic water, removal of silica, particularly with dolomitic lime, and removal of color. Most of the above advantages accompany water softening, although at some plants lime is used specifically for one purpose, such as silica removal with dolomitic lime, minimizing pipeline corrosion by addition of lime to correct an aggressive water, and others. Hardness in water comprises two types - carbonate hardness, caused by dissolved calcium and magnesium carbonates and bi- carbonates, and non-carbonate hardness caused by dissolved non- carbonate salts, particularly calcium sulfate, calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium chloride. Total hardness is the sum of the carbonate hardness and non-carbonate hardness. Waters are classified as soft (0 to 75 mg/L as CaCO,), moderate (75 to 150 mg/L), hard (150 to 300 mg/L), and very hard (above 300 mg/L). Most water plants strive to reduce total hardness to about 100 mg/L, although in recent years the tendency in some cities has been to allow a little higher value in order to reduce both chemical costs and the amount of water softening sludges produced. There are four basic types of softening plants: lime softening, primarily to reduce carbonate hardness; lime-soda softening, for reduction of both types of hardness (in some plants caustic soda is used in place of soda ash, but it is more costly); split lime-zeolite, where a base exchange mineral is employed in place of soda ash (this system also requires salt [sodium chloride] to regenerate the zeolite mineral); and finally zeolite softening, which is generally used in small systems for private houses and small municipalities. Principal disadvantages of the latter system are its relatively high cost and the salt requirement, which introduces considerable quantities of soluble salts into the waste water discharge system.

The distribution pattern, abundance variations and types of polymetallic nodules and associated megabenthic communities in area covers more than 60 000 km2 laid out in the eastern Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) is presented. Our observations are based on data from 158 boxcore stations collected during the cruise of the Interoceanmetal (IOM) in 2004 on board of RV Yuzhmorgeologiya. Although those polymetallic nodules for two decades been subject to prospecting and exploration studies carried out by IOM, the knowledge of megabenthic communities and their distribution pattern within nodule field was extremely limited. With purpose to evaluate the relationship between polymetallic nodules and associated benthic megafauna, an comparison analyze was carried out in respect to their composition, types, abundance across the studied area owing into account the local particular feature of bottom topography. It is suggested that the nodule-bearing seafloor supported more diverse fauna (higher number of morphotypes) than the nodule-free areas. Moreover, based on correlation between types of nodules and associated faunal morphotypes frequency the apparent relationship is considered. The most abundant megafaunal taxa (between 68 ? 92%) is essentially associated with the occurrence of the diagenetically growth nodules type (D-type and its D1-subtype); the role of the H and HD nodule-types was variable. In respect to the bottom topography, the highest diversity in the structure of megafaunal communities was recorded in the gently undulating plains and on the horst slopes, thus the highest nodule abundance occur on the topographic slopes.

The fact that the Society of Mining Engineers has determined that two of the five environmental topics reviewed at the 1989 Annual Meeting relate to reclamation bonding indicates to me that those who are involved in the coal industry, no matter what capacity, remain very cognizant of the reclamation bonding dilemma.

INTRODUCTION The tailing dam is part of the SOHIO L-Bar Uranium Mine and Mill located about 70.8 kilometers (44 miles) west of Albuquerque in northwestern New Mexico. The dam location is shown on Figure 1. The tailing dam is one of the last upstream method dams permitted in the industry. Design and construction aspects of the project, as well as operation and maintenance considerations, are reviewed herein. Since initial construction, SOHIO Western Mining Company and Woodward-Clyde Consultants have developed several modifications and improvements in the dam&apos;s operating and monitoring procedures. This work has been done in coordination with the New Mexico State Engineer&apos;s Office and in accordance with recommendations in a report done for the Corps of Engineer&apos;s Phase I Dam Inspection Report. Modifications and improvements described should be of particular interest to owners and operators of other tailing dams utilizing the upstream method of deposition. The tailing facility was designed for a 10-year life to provide an ultimate storage capacity of 6 1/2 billion kilograms (7 1/2 million short tons) in an area of about 180 acres. A plan view of the tailing dam is shown on Figure 2. The tailing consists of approximately 75% sand size material and 25% fines (material passing the No. 200 sieve). The tailing dam includes a small earth starter dam with raises of the dam accomplished using tailing deposited by upstream method techniques. The starter dam is a homogeneous embankment about 610 meters (2000 feet) long, a maximum height of 12 meters (40 feet) and 2 1/2:1 (horizontal to vertical) upstream and downstream slopes. The starter dam contains an internal drainage system which includes a near vertical chimney drain connected to horizontal finger drains. A typical section through the maximum height of the starter dam is shown on Figure 3. A small confining dam, approximately 1.6 meters (5 feet) high, is constructed beyond the limits

The northern zone of the Indus Basin comprises a vast area of essentially level land in West Pakistan which is irrigated by means of a complex system of canals that distribute more water to more land than any other irrigation system in the world. In spite of the development of this extensive irrigation system, production of food and fiber has not met the requirements of the country. The major reasons that crop production has not reached anticipated levels are the lack of adequate irrigation supplies and effective subsurface drainage. As a result, yields per acre are among the lowest in the world for areas where irrigation is practiced, and many thousands of acres of valuable crop land have been removed from production or are seriously affected by salinity and waterlogging. To rectify the problems of irrigation supply and drainage the Government of Pakistan has undertaken a program of Salinity Control and Reclamation which is being administered by the Water and Power Development Authority. The Authority retained Tipton and Kalmbach, Inc. , of Denver,, Colorado as Engineers for the program in the northern zone of the Indus Basin. -This program consists of the construction of about 30, 000 irrigation wells to provide drainage for waterlogged lands and full irrigation supplies, including leaching requirements, for; all cultivated lands. The program will ultimately ensure the productivity of 20 million acres and will involve an annual pumpage from ground water storage of nearly 40 million acre-feet of water. The value of the crops produced when the program is in full operation will be 4 to 6 times the value of the crops that could be produced without the benefits of this program.

Final reclamation of mine tailings impoundments typically involves addressing the broad issues of surface stabilization and water management. Surface stabilization includes immobilizing the tailings particles and providing long-term protection of the containment facility. Water management typically includes provisions for handling both the external water (rainfall and runoff) and the internal water (pore fluids). Wet tailings disposal facilities, and sites with limited access and steep topography, present challenges to implementing effective surface stabilization and water management plans. This paper presents a generalized discussion of the approach to tailings impoundment reclamation based on project experience.
