Atlantic Richfield Company began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April, 1975 in Live Oak County, 10 miles southwest of the town of George West (Figure 1). The operation is designed to produce 250,000 pounds of U303 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Company, Dalco and U. S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural -- cattle ranching and farming -- but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) is a recognized environmental challenge facing mining industries. An ambient temperature ferrite (ATF) process has been investigated for treating ARD. Most nonferrous metal and calcium ions present in typical ARDs were found to be detrimental to the ATF process. Three approaches were examined, including C02 aeration, addition of complex agents and use of magnetic seeds. By introducing magnetic seeds in the ATF process, the interferences were minimized and all the precipitates formed with lime neutralization were magnetically recovered from a simulated ARD. Some of the practices of the mining industry that may place an undesirable stress on the groundwater environment are coming under increasing scrutiny from legislators and regulatory agencies. Among these practices are mine dewatering, the use of tailings ponds, land rehabilitation, and technological innovations such as in situ leaching of waste clumps and ore deposits. Pernichele, noting that 24 states have enacted legislation controlling to varying degrees the environmental effects of mining, has emphasized the importance of assessing the potential for damage to groundwater when evaluating, planning, and designing mining projects. 1 Illinois has enacted legislation requiring anyone opening, operating or abandoning a mine site to obtain a permit from the Illinois EPA. The law is one of the first to require regular monitoring and reporting to a control agency. Legislation has also been recently enacted at the national level that will have a significant impact on the mining industry; e. g., the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 (Public Law 92-500). The stated objective of this Act is to restore and maintain the chemical, physical and biological integrity of the nation's waters. Specifically, according to Sec. 102(a), the Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is required to prepare or develop comprehensive programs for preventing, reducing or eliminating the pollution of the navigable waters and groundwaters and improving the sanitary condition of surface and underground waters. The definition of the terms "pollution" and "pollutant" is of particular significance to those who must comply with PL 92-500. The definitions are quite broad and include most of the adverse water quality effects of man's activities. As defined in Sec. 502(19), "pollution means the man-made or man-induced alteration of the chemical, physical, biological and radiological integrity of water." Within the Act, the list of pollutants includes dredged spoil, solid waste, incineration residue, chemical wastes, radioaetive materials, heat, wrecked or discarded equipment, rock, sand, cellar dirt, and industrial waste discharged into water.

Groundwater inflow and impacts have become major aspects in the permitting and operation of many gold mines. First, the hydrothermal or placer genesis of many of the orebodies being investigated or produced today almost guarantees that mines will be "wet", involving groundwater control as part of operations. Second, the style of ore deposition a1 so often involves a1teration of the host rock, resulting in relatively weak, low permeabi1ity materials that require extensive groundwater pressure control for stable mining. Third, the location of many mines in arid areas guarantees that impacts on water resources will be matters of key focus during permitting and operation. However, groundwater control and protection is a technically difficult area and often involves managerial decisions and activities that do not fit comfortably into traditional mining. In an attempt to overcome some of these difficulties, this paper provides a guide to mine managers and hydrologists as to appropriate strategies for designing, setting up, operating, and evaluating groundwater programs at gold mines that get the job done and are cost effective.

"Federal regulations require refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines to sustain life for 96 hours while maintaining an apparent temperature (AT) below 35°C (95°F). NIOSH research has shown that heat and humidity buildup is a major concern with RAs because they have a limited ability to dissipate heat, and high internal air temperature and relative humidity (RH) may expose occupants to heat stress. The heat transfer process within and surrounding an RA is very complex and is not easily defined analytically nor experimentally. To investigate heat and humidity buildup in RAs, NIOSH conducted multiple in-mine 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA. The test results show that when moisture was introduced into the tests to represent perspiration and respiration from miners (wet tests), the average measured internal air temperature at midheight increased by 7.7°C, 9.4°C, and 10.5°C, and the RH approached 95%, 94%, and 88%, respectively. For the dry tests when no moisture was introduced, the average internal temperature increased by 8.4°C, 10.3°C, and 12.6°C, respectively. INTRODUCTION If an accident occurs in an underground coal mine, miners who cannot escape from the mine can enter an RA for protection from adverse conditions, such as high carbon monoxide levels. One of the main concerns with the use of mobile RAs is the thermal environment inside the RA. The metabolic heat of the occupants and the heat released by the CO2 scrubbing system will cause the interior air temperature to increase. Moreover, the humidity within the RA will increase through occupants’ respiration and perspiration and from the chemical reaction within the CO2 scrubbing system. The internal thermal conditions can subject miners to heat stress, which can lead to heat exhaustion, heat stroke, or even death depending on duration and magnitude of exposure. MSHA regulations require that RAs must be designed to ensure that the internal apparent temperature does not exceed 35°C (95°F) when the RA is fully occupied [1]. Apparent temperature (AT) is a temperature-humidity metric for the perceived temperature caused by the combined effects of air temperature, relative humidity (RH), and wind speed. It is used to assess the perception of indoor temperatures when workplaces are not sufficiently heated, cooled, or insulated to provide comfortable or healthy conditions. Before a mobile RA can be deployed at an underground mine for emergency usage, it must be tested to show that its internal AT when fully occupied will not exceed the 35°C (95°F) limit. For practical reasons, RA manufacturers usually conduct their tests at above-ground test facilities. To investigate RA thermal response in an in-mine environment, NIOSH conducted multiple 96-hour tests on a 6-person metal-type RA, a 23-person tent-type RA, and a 10-person tent-type RA in its underground coal mine facility. The work described in this paper could be used by RA manufacturers to determine a final temperature rise based solely on dry and time-reduced testing."

Observational Method (OM) can further be supported with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with automated data-driven decision-making features in risk mitigation and implementation of proper design and construction approaches. This paper presents collaborative applications of ECI, OM, machine learning, and risk baselining in risk management and productivity enhancement in tunneling projects.

The Tintaya mine of BHP Copper, located in Southern Peru, includes a copper oxide deposit hosted in a mineralized skarn zone. The ore contains large amounts of clays and high acid consuming species resulting in low heap leaching performance. A treatment scheme was proposed that included a wet screening separation. The coarse fraction would be treated by heap and the fines by agitation leaching. The dissolved copper would then be recovered through solvent extraction and electrowinning (SXEW). Testwork determined the optimum heap leaching conditions to treat the oxide in on/off pads of 3 meter height with an initial acid cure followed by variable acid strength during irrigation. The method resulted in a reduced acid consumption and good copper recoveries.

Deposits are global, said Barrick Gold's Smith. This means that the mineral industry, by necessity, is global. "Manufacturers have considerable freedom to decide exactly where they wish to produce whatever it is that they sell," he said. "What we sell, on the other hand, must be produced where nature chose to lay it down. The question is not so much, whether to go global, as when to do it and how to go about it." The timing of international expansion depends on external factors, often political, Smith said, and on internal ones that relate to the company's size and stage of development. "In deciding how to expand, a company is largely deciding how to adapt its existing business strategy to activity on the world stage," he said Barrick entered 1997 with 1.58 kt (51 million oz) of reserves, Smith said, annual production of 93.3 t (3 mil- lion oz) and cash flow of $463 million. Reserves in- creased 40% in 1996 and production will begin to rise again significantly in 1999. "We believe our fundamental strategy is responsible for our early development and subsequent success," he said. Barrick entered the gold-mining industry in 1983. Its corporate mandate was to create shareholder value, Smith said. From the beginning, the company took a different approach - businesslike, entrepreneurial, strategic and focused. "Many mining companies start out with a technical team and develop business and financial expertise thereafter," Smith said. "In 1983, Barrick had the business people, and then moved into mining." First, it acquired part interest in two small operations, one in Alaska and one in Ontario. Then, in 1984, it merged with Camflo Mines, which operated a low-cost underground operation in Quebec.

The San Manuel oxide ore reserve ranges in depth from being exposed on the surface to lying 1000 ft. beneath a conglomerate layer all of which is confined in the subsidence zone of an active sulfide block caving operation. Present day recovery of the oxide copper values is either by open pit mining-dump leaching, or in-situ leaching of the oxide ore using dilute sulfuric acid solutions and solvent extraction/electrowinning processing of the pregnant leach solutions. Future plans are for continuation of leaching with expansion of reserves and increased processing rates. The state of the mining industry and copper in particular has not been good for a number of years. All of the producers that are still operating have made major adjustments in order to remain competitive. Magma Copper Co. is no exception.

A sustainable coal industry needs to achieve a number objectives concerning mainly with superior utilisation of deposits and improved environmental performance. Modern quality control systems, which are greatly based on the on-line analysers, play an important role in achieving sustainability targets. This paper discusses the testing and application of on-line ash analysers installed in the Ptolemais and Megalopolis lignite mines in Greece and examines the possibility of using this type of analyser to control blending and homogenisation operations. The effect of the accuracy of on-line analyser to control process, when used for the characterization of low rank coals with complex and variable composition, such as greek lignites, is examined.

A computer model is developed for the problem of dispersal of dust (suspended particulate matter) resulting from blasting operations in surface mines. Undulated surface (lower boundary) simulation was carried through sixth order polynomial by least square approximation. Segmentwise terrain simulation was linearly added to build ground feature extending either side of the blast location. Assuming the initial dust concentration in the vertical column to. be uniform and treating the finite vertical line sources as a series of point sources to height, H varying from zero to top of the dust mushroom, integration was done of the concentration effects from H = 0 toL tan[0] (L = horizontal distance of the blast location and [0] is the angle of the top of dust cloud from the point of observation). Using frame of reference moving with the mean wind, the ground level 'concentration (GLC) has been computed over the undulated terrain. Standard deviation (s) of concentration has been parameterized based on mixed layer similarity theory in convective boundary layer.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) has recently completed the construction of copper leaching, solvent extraction, and electrowinning facilities at their Toquepala and Cuajone plants in Southern Peru. Much of the ore for these new operations is the result of the existing mining operations that have been in existence as early as 1959. At Toquepala, pre-conditioning and bacterial dump leaching of the sulfide ore that was too low in copper content to be processed through the copper concentrator began in 1987. The Cuajone heap leach operation is treating copper oxide ore that has been stockpiled since the Cuajone concentrator began operation in 1976. The pregnant leach solutions from the dump leaching at Toquepala and the permanent pad heap at Cuajone are combined into one plant feed solution. Adjacent to the large dumps at Toquepala, a solvent extraction and electrowinning facility has been constructed. The electrowinning facility has a planned annual production rate of35,000 metric tons per year Grade A cathode copper. Initial production of the cathode copper began in November 1995.

"Very low strength alluvial peat soil was found under two old drainage galleries with just 4.3m cover above a twin tunnel due to be excavated by a 10.6m diameter EPB Shield for São Paulo Metro’s Line 5. Alignment was required to strengthen soil and drive the TBM through safely without damaging the galleries. The design included six levels of self-drilling forepoling with lengths up to 15m, using 100 mm-diameter SCH160 metal tubing and injection bulbs with estimated 0.20m diameter. Two 6m-diameter circular shafts were excavated along the shield-tunnel axis, one each side of the galleries, and forepoling fanned out under gallery foundations. Given the peculiar soil and confined working space, more data were needed for correct drilling geometry. Ground mass treatment was successfully designed and executed and galleries were fitted with instruments to enable the shield’s advance. DESCRIPTION São Paulo Metro’s Line 5 (aka Lilas or purple line) is adding 11 stations along an 11.5km extension and three EPB TBMs are being used simultaneously (three EPBs on the same job for the first time in Brazil) with one of them excavating a large cross- section twin-track tunnel. Currently the largest work-in-progress for São Paulo Metro, this project has been divided into seven lots and 9km are already operational. This study refers to Lot 6 where the 10.6m - diameter EPB shield excavation is only 4.3m below two galleries running through a 10m layer of very soft peat soil in an old alluvial riverside region ringed by major roads. After recent filling, this area (Parque das Bicicletas) was used for recreation, although temporarily it has become a construction site. This paper will describe the original basic design; precautions in relation to the structural condition of the galleries after inspection; the problem of absence of data for their foundations; subsoil bore tests; evolution of the engineering design for the galleries and conditioning and reinforcing the soft soil below the galleries to ensure safe advance of the EPB shield, and finally the successful outcome of the solution used."

Changes in solids flow characteristics from pilot scale to full scale because of larger so lids contact pressures, thermal shocks or unforeseen temperature excursions often cause full scale solids flow problems not encountered in the laboratory or pilot studies. A new method for the design of long- wall chain pillars, called Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), is described. The method provides estimates of the relative stability of different longwall pillar designs during all stages of their service life. The key issue addressed by ALPS is the magnitude and time-of-arrival of the longwall abutment loads applied to chain pillars. A field study was conducted and other available field data were analyzed in order to develop an approach for estimating the abutment loads. An example based on longwall experience in the Pittsburgh seam is used to illustrate how ALPS can be used in mine design.

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

A new examination of tabular uranium (U)-vanadium (V) deposits within the La Sal district places mineralization in the context of the complex fluid flow history that has occurred in the Paradox Basin and Colorado Plateau. As the only currently producing district of this deposit type in the region, the La Sal district provides excellent opportunities to study deposit- and district-scale features that can serve as exploration guides where exposure is limited. The absence of major structures along a narrow and elongate mineral trend that runs E-W across the southern part of the Utah-Colorado border indicates a regional lithologic control. The trend was likely influenced by Jurassic drainage patterns, as indicated by paleocurrent directions shown in Fig. 1. Fluvial sandstone host rocks in the Jurassic Morrison Formation contain significant evidence of multiple superimposed fluid systems that have progressively changed local mineralogy. Apart from the presence of ore minerals, remnants of fluid systems are preserved as cements including quartz overgrowths, compositionally distinct carbonates, and sheet silicates. New geochronology methods provide constraints on the timing of initial mineralization and later remobilization. U-Pb ages of calcite associated with ore minerals provide evidence for Early Cretaceous mineralization, whereas textures and K-Ar ages show that early-formed V-minerals were replaced at the expense of V-bearing micas and clays during the Eocene. The Greek Cement Industry is a vital sector of our economy. With an annual production of cement over 15.5 million tonnes, it contributes significantly to the national gross domestic product (G.D.P.). The cement industry, as other mineralogical transformation process industries (lime, glass, ceramics, extractive metallurgy etc.), is high energy intensive. Each tonne of cement produced requires not only large amounts of fuels (coal, fuel oil), but additionally a significant quantity of electrical power as well. All fuels consumed by the Greek Cement Industry are imported and energy accounts for one third of the cement production cost. Therefore, it is of interest of the community and the industry to increase energy efficiency, to reduce the quantities of fuels consumed in the cement manufacturing process. It is also known that like almost all manufacturing processes, the cement industry produces large amounts of CO2 (combustion of fuels, de-carbonization of limestone and use to electricity). The utilization of wastes (principally as alternative fuels, scrap tires, spent solvents etc.) is compatible with the general principles of waste management and it is also a common practice in other European and developed countries. In the present paper the economic, social and environmental benefits provided by the recycle process of the various wastes in the Greek cement plants are extensively analyzed. From the whole work, it was concluded that such a practice: - replaces a significant percentage of imported fossil fuels in the cement manufacturing process, - maximizes the recovery of energy and also ensures their safe disposal, - produces overall environmental benefits by reducing releases to air, water and land, - prevents resource depletion of valuable non-renewable fossil fuels, - overcomes the need for the construction of dedicated incineration facilities, - contributes positively to the principles of the sustainable development.

The R-N Process is an outgrowth of the development by the National Lead Company's Norwegian subsidiary Titania A/S, of a process for producing metallic iron and a high titanium content co-product from ilmenite. Development of the process for the treatment of iron ores was continued as a joint project of the Republic Steel Corporation and the National Lead Company in 1953. More recently in July, 1957, the R-N Corporation was created by these two companies to undertake the commercial promotion of the results of this joint project. This paper has been prepared with the permission and encouragement of these three companies. The R-N process has as its objective the making of metallic iron from iron ores or iron ore concentrates. The general principles of the process have already been disclosed in technical papers and patents. In general the process comprises the following steps: 1. Iron oxide in crushed natural iron ores or iron ore concentrates is reduced to about 95% metallic iron, without fusion in a rotary kiln in the presence of solid carbonaceous fuel,*such as, coke or char, limestone and combustible gases. 2. The kiln discharge, consisting of metallized ore, coke, lime and coke ashes, is cooled. The excess coke is regenerated and recycled to the kiln feed.
