Existing classifications of mining and construction equipment have had major deficiencies. They often lack organization, balance, and have remained obscure. Particularly when proceeding to great.er resolution these deficiencies have proven crippling. By adopting "Classes", "Groups" f "Types" and "Kinds" at successive degrees of refinement, a "Taxonomy" is developed based on clear visual differentiation or on a "Morphology??. This symbiotic application, adopted from the Biological Sciences, yields clear, simple and unambiguous results. Supporting this effort are guidelines for easily and credibly sketching equipment which are also distinctive. Numerous illustrative examples are provided. Communications are improved and the engineer obtains a confident feel for the equipment at hand.

Expanded markets for copper in the past few years and a consequent search for new ore bodies have revitalized the widely known but seldom applied method of producing copper called heap leaching. This term should be differentiated from dump leaching in that the latter is applied to dumps of mixed oxide and sulfide ores (although either may predominate) that have been too low grade to beneficiate and have, therefore, been stripped off the higher grade underlying sulfide ores. Heap leaching is defined here as the process applied to oxide ores which have been mined solely for the purpose of leaching. In this case, all costs of mining the ore become a part (and a substantial one, as will be shown) of the cost of the copper produced, whereas in dump leaching the mining cost has already been accounted for as a stripping cost for the sulfide ore. Of course, with newly opened ore bodies, stripping costs may be divided through accounting procedures, between the copper produced by the mill and that obtained by leaching, but in general this type of operation must be economic on the basis of the sulfide ore alone. Heap leaching, as a beneficiation method, is unique in that it is the only process used for the recovery of a metal in which the time involved from mining the ore to metal production is measured in months instead of hours or at the most, days, Then too, after the ore body has been depleted and mining has ceased, metal production will continue for some substantial period of time. Heap leaching is also unique because unlike any other method of beneficiation, metal recovery cannot be accurately forecast ahead of time and recovery will never approach that of a conventionally milled sulfide ore or even that of a vat leached oxide ore. Counter-balancing this drawback, however, is the relatively low capital expenditure necessary to put a heap leaching operation into production and the consequence that smaller ore bodies which would not support the higher capital cost involved in a vat leaching plant can be made into producers. Stated more simply, in heap leaching the operator accepts low recovery in exchange for low capital costs and the break even point, that is, where the operator should go to vat leaching with its higher recovery and higher capital costs, is a matter of economics and also, to a great extent, a matter for the nature of the ore to decide. For instance, an ore that will vat leach in 7 to 10 days using 7 pounds of sulfuric acid per pound of copper produced might use double or triple that amount of acid during the months that are required for heap leaching.

Since geologic anomalies are one of the governing factors of instability of underground openings, it is extremely important to know in advance the locations and extent of these anomalies such as faults and weak zones. At an underground coal mine in the Black Warrior Basin, core drilling was conducted to find a fault in an area where they were planning to locate longwall panels and possibly a shaft. Core logging did not provide sufficient information to delineate the exact location, strike, and dip of the fault. However, a high resolution reflection seismic study successfully solved this problem. This experience proved the seismic exploration technique could be used for premining coal exploration by reducing drilling costs and providing more accurate and detailed information about geologic anomalies.

Tunnels are defined as underground passages made without removing the overlying materials. From time immemorial men have driven tunnels for mining purposes. Even today tunnels are the building blocks for underground mines. The total length of such a network of tunnels in a mine may add up to 10-100 miles! In addition to this, rapid development of vehicular traffic, needs for air raid protection and metropolitan traffic problems have given a great impetus to underground tunnel construction. But for the successful drivage of any tunnel an adequate air environment has always been and remains an essential prerequisite. This is particularly true for tunnels in mines which are driven in gas bearing strata often at a substantial depth from the surface. An adequate air environment is designed to promote the health, safety and comfort of workers which results in greater productivity and efficiency. Its legal definition varies from country to country but, in general, it means the provision of sufficient circulating air, often at specified velocities, to maintain: (i) at least 19% oxygen in the working areas (ii) Concentration of pollutants, e.g., methane, carbon monoxide, respirable dust, etc. below specified limits. Table 1 shows the maximum allowable concentrations for some of these pollutants.1 (iii) Temperature and relative humidity below specified limits. Almost all of the world?s zirconium is mined in the form of zircon (ZrSiO4), the majority as a coproduct of titanium mining from heavy mineral sands deposits. These are placer type deposits, in which the dominant mineral is silica but which also contain a suite of ?valuable minerals,? often consisting of a mixture of titanium minerals, various alumino-silicates and zircon plus a range of other mineral species. The composition of the valuable minerals in such deposits is known as the mineral assemblage. There is no reasonable consistent geological relationship between zircon and titanium minerals. They can derive from separate igneous rock deposits that rarely occur together. The connection emanates once these separate rocks have been eroded by weather and water, often across a very long geological period. Outokumpu Mintec started development of the pressure filter in 1991, and the first unit was delivered to Tara Mines Ltd. Ireland in 1992. The filter replaced a conventional disc filter and a thermal dryer. The replacement of the thermal dryer has improved both environmental and working conditions. The filter is currently dewatering 80,000 tons per year of lead concentrate, producing a cake with less than 6 wt % residual moisture.

As one begins to contemplate the organization of a talk with the title "Iron Ore - The Permanent State of Evolution," the main divisions appear to be the past, the present, and the future. But distaste for repetition of the present production achievements, which scarcely need additional description on this occasion, soon leads one to the conclusion that a more appropriate division of the subject is simply the past and the future . . . with emphasis on the future. We are working in the present, but it can only be understood by what has taken place in the years and decades gone by, and/or under what terms we will have to face the future. Evolution is more often thought of as a steady change - but steady change is really the product of revolutions, sometimes making headlines but often unnoticed at the time. With hindsight, we recognize the great importance of the emergence of the Bessemer converter and the open hearth and the vast influence that both have had on steel making and the changing ore demand. In this country we also see schooners opening the era for lake transportation of iron ore from Michigan to Take Erie. Later, steamships haul the ore from the Mesabi Range to the steel centers of the country. In order to take full advantage of the inland seaway, there had to be revolutions in ship design, loading and unloading facilities and channel and lock development. Full scale utilization of the resources of the Mesabi Range, itself, required parallel upheavals such as the development of new production equipment, and substitution of modern forms of energy for horsepower, and, yes, manpower, as well.

Overseas coal trade has increased from 169 to 274 million metric tons (tonnes) between 1970 and 1983, representing a 3.8% average annual rate of growth. Metallurgical coal accounts for nearly 61% of the international coal market while steam coal's share is about 40%. By year-end 1983, the U.S. was the single largest coal exporter at 77 million tonnes, followed by Australia, 56 million tonnes; Poland, 35 million tonnes; South Africa, 28 million tonnes; USSR, 27 million tonnes; and Canada, 17 million tonnes. Coal exports can play a more significant role for one country than another country. For instance, in the U.S., coal exports accounted for only 9% of total coal demand in 1984 while in Australia, exports accounted for 53% of that country's total coal demand. Of all the major coal exporters, only U.S. exports accounted for less than 10% of total consumption in 1984. Japan is the largest importer of coal, 73.8 million tons in 1983. Although the majority of Japan's imports are metallurgical coal, steam coal imports into Japan increased seven-fold between 1978 and 1983, from 2 to 14 million tonnes. Australia is the leading exporter of both metallurgical and steam coal to Japan, accounting for 47% and 55% of Japan's coal imports, respectively. Since 1978, South Africa has developed into a major steam coal exporter to Japan, increasing its market share from 7.9% to 18.8%. The U.S., which was not even a player in Japan's steam coal market in 1978, has made inroads and accounts for 6.7% of Japan's steam coal imports. However, this translates into only one million tonnes. In the European coal market, for the most part, the U.S. is the leading supplier of metallurgical coal and South Africa is the major supplier of steam coal. The U.S. was not even a factor in the European steam coal market in 1978 and has made inroads during the last six years at the expense of Poland and South Africa. From 1978 to 1983, the U.S. has increased its market share in steam coal exports to France from 0.2 to 28%; Spain, 0 to 52%; Italy, 0 to 43.5%; Denmark, 0 to 19%; Germany, 0.5 to 16%; and the Netherlands, 0.6 to 45%, respectively. The use of coal (solid fuels) as a fuel to produce electricity has had increasing signficance for most of the countries analyzed between 1978 and 1983. The flip side to this is that oil has lost its share of this market during this time period. Of all the countries selected, only France reported a decline in coal's share of total electricity production. This is a reflection of France's ambitious nuclear program.

A large-scale work scheduling algorithm has been developed in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. This study basically concerned the formulation of a reliable mathematical programming model to handle the problem, the achievement of an efficient solution of the model, and the implementation of the algorithm to the worker assignment problems of a large underground coal mine. The results showed that the work scheduling algorithm can make optimal assignments efficiently. It is believed it has potential significance in improving manpower utilization and can offer great help to coal mine managers in making efficient manpower allocations.

Commercial lime plants in the United States and Canada are depicted in Figure 1. The sources of lime available to Nevada and bordering states are rather few. Chemstar Lime has plants at Apex, Nevada and Nelsen, Arizona. Continental Lime, Inc. has plants at Tacoma, Washington, Townsend, Montana and Delta, Utah. However, Continental Lime has a new rotary kiln installation underway near Wendover, Nevada. This plant is scheduled to come on stream in the fall of 1989.

The two most stringent parameters for in place fracturing of rock are the lack of any initial void space in the rock which to expand into and the ability to gain access only through drill holes. These two restrictions have proven so severe that as of today the only proven techniques for efficient fracturing are the contained nuclear detonation and hydrofracing. Both of these methods have highly developed technologies for their application. Hydrofracing has been a standard oil field practice for two decades, and the experience gained from a couple hundred underground nuclear detonations has resulted in a thorough understanding of the phenomenology of cavity and chimney formation. What is still lacking is a practical method to create a suit- able degree of fracturing for those ore bodies which do not meet the application criteria for either the nuclear explosion or hydrofracing. Nuclear applications must be restricted to thick ore deposits so as to take advantage of chimney collapse height--preferable in excess of 200 feet thick. Other requirements such as ground shock, containment, and radioactive contamination further reduce the number of sites that prudently can be selected.

This study aims to investigate the effects of the operational variables on the concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. The results indicate that concentrate collecting time and pulp density were the parameters with the greatest effects on the concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, the concentrate collecting time, collector dosage and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. The separation efficiency was found to be mainly influenced by the concentrate collecting time. This study can be helpful in identifying the parameters with the most effects on flotation performance and, consequently, the overall process efficiency, including recovery and separation efficiency. Such an outcome can be used as a decision-based tool to apply the necessary changes in a real-life industrial operation in a more effective way to improve the quality and quantity of the flotation concentration.

There are numerous suggestions in the literature on methods of obtaining representative samples of waste rock or mill tailings. Some suggested methods would result in thousands of samples and very high costs for a large facility. There is no general rule that can (or should) be followed, such as collection of a given number of samples per mass of material, per acre of impoundment, or per foot of drillcore. Each site is different, and the adequacy of sampling must be tailored to the site. A logical approach is to let the variability at the site dictate the number of samples that should be collected and analyzed, and then to quantify and evaluate the results by means of standard statistical methods.

Bituminous sands of the Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta constitute the ore for the surface mining operation at Syncrude Canada Ltd. These sediments represent a complex succession of fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. Grade prediction is realized through a combination of geological interpretation, computer modeling, and reference to past mining experience. Accurate forecasts of feed grade permit reliable predictions of volumes for removal to meet budgeted synthetic crude oil production. This planning facilitates efficient allocation of mining equipment and resources. The feed grade to the Extraction Plant is monitored at various points along the delivery system.

Early attempts to apply superconductivity to the beneficiation of kaolin required very large refrigerators to remove the heat generated during rapid charging and discharging of the magnet. In the early 1990's, Advanced Cryo Magnetics, Inc. developed and patented methods to reduce this pulsed heating by a factor of fifteen. Small, helium refrigerators and cryo-coolers are now used. Along with savings in electric power, superconductivity allows operation at higher magnetic fields and greatly improves separation process efficiency. New designs offer enormous reductions in weight, size and capital cost as compared to older copper magnets. Application of this technology to minerals other than kaolin is emerging.

INTRODUCTION This paper deals with some practical aspects of the use and interpretation of dosimetric methods for assessing the exposure of workers to natural uranium. Consideration must be given not only to the scientific value of the method of dosimetry, but also to the practicality of the method in the particular working environment. It is generally accepted (IAEA, 1976) that uranium does not present a hazard during the mining and extraction processes up to the final concentration stage, that is precipitation as ADU or calcining to the oxide. Further processing (e.g. conversion to oxides, fluorides, etc.) is generally associated with the nuclear industry. It is customary for uranium processing facilities to be managed according to industrial norms rather than according to those applied for the purpose of radiation protection. This is mainly because of the large quantity of material to be processed and the fact that uranium is considered to be of a low radiotoxicity. Although ventilation is used to some extent, provision is not made for the same level of protection as would be required in a radiochemical facility. It is typical in such a plant to find that the process itself may be enclosed and ventilated, but the ventilation is inadequate to cope with an accidental release of material. The working environment is poorly ventilated, sometimes only by natural ventilation, and one frequently finds areas with high airborne dust levels, designated as mandatory respirator areas. Protection of personnel is dependent on personal protective equipment. Radiation protection is not of prime concern and personnel are not specifically trained in this subject. It is in this type of environment that acceptable monitoring procedures and personnel dosimetry must be established. The effectiveness and practical application of the dosimetry must also be judged against this working environment. DOSIMETRIC TECHNIQUES The methods available for assessing personnel exposure, whether it be in terms of chemical or radiological hazard, include urinalysis, faecal analysis and [in vivo] monitoring. Faecal analysis does not present itself easily as a method for routine use. Techniques for [in vivo] monitoring have been developed recently and as expensive instrumentation is required, it is not generally available. That leaves urinalysis as a dosimetric technique for routine use, and it is probably for this reason that urinalysis is still widely used. Guidelines for the interpretation of urinalysis results, as originally provided by Neuman (Neuman, 1950), are still used in practice, even though it has become clear that this method has severe limitations as regards the assessment of the dose as a result of the intake of class W or class Y compounds (Alexander, 1974). Typically a level of 300 µg [U/C] urine can serve as an indicator of an acute exposure (above which chemical damage to the kidneys may occur) and a level of 100 µg [U/C ] urine can serve as an indicator for an investigation. Such levels are determined and are used in conjunction with several factors, such as mode of intake (ingestion or inhalation), solubility of compound (D, W or Y), means of intake (acute or chronic), environmental monitoring results and frequency of urine sampling. Since the ICRP concept for internal radiation limitation changed from that of the critical organ, i.e. the single organ of greatest significance under the circumstances, to that of effective dose equivalent, i.e. account being taken of the total risk due to the exposure of all tissue, the maximum permissible organ burden (MPOB) was replaced as secondary dose limit by the annual limit on intake (ALI) (ICRP, 1977). The ALI values are calculated from the committed dose equivalents of the various organs, and are used to determine organ burdens, which are then used to interpret the dosimetric results. Using the ICRP model (ICRP, 1979), a comprehensive calculation was made by Johnson (Johnson, 1980), giving organ burdens and excretion data in terms of intake for acute and chronic exposures for different categories of uranium compounds. The question arises as to what extent the direct measurement of intake can be utilised as a method of dosimetry. Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a room-and-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the U.S National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90 percent. But the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining-industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing over-sprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99 percent and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

This study was carried out in Ichadih to map the sulfide/gold mineralization using combined electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and self-potential (SP) methods. No geophysical analysis has been carried out to delineate such ore deposits in the area. Thus, the study provides a different approach for approximate location and extension of the quartz reef associated with sulfide/gold mineralization. It also provides the elementary idea for further detailed subsurface investigation in terms of geological and geophysical approach.
