New methods for remediating metals-contaminated groundwater include in-situ emplacement of highly adsorptive substrates to permanently retard solutes. Substrates are introduced by sequential injection of soluble components that precipitate in the aquifer, forming a permanent high-retardation zone. This method overcomes the factors that limit pump-and-treat remediation; i.e, long-term source loading and slow desorption. Column tests demonstrated efficient substrate emplacement, increasing retardation coefficients of Cr(VI) by 20 and As(V) by 40. Similar effectiveness is expected for other heavy metals. Simulations using a coupled advective-geochemical model accurately matched substrate emplacement and arsenic attenuation, allowing extrapolation to other constituents and larger-scale applications.

Wastewaters generated during the extraction of gold from the ore can contain a variety of contaminants such as cyanide, heavy metals and arsenic. Proper management of these wastewaters is therefore necessary to minimize the negative impact of gold mining and milling operations on the environment. The Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC),located in Burlington, Ontario, Canada, has been involved in several studies related to the evaluation of various effluent treatment technologies which are relevant to the treatment and proper management of gold mill effluents. These studies have included bench and pilot scale tests, and the evaluation offull-scale systems. Furthermore, the WTC staff developed protocols for cyanide analysis in gold mill effluents, and a mathematical model for predicting the degradation of cyanide in tailings ponds. The information generated by the WTC staff has been referenced in several reports and papers published over the last ten years (Schmidt et.al. 1982, Simovic & Snodgrass 1989, Whittle et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1989, Zaidi et.al. 1991). Recently, the WTC has started to develop a micro­computer based expert system for use by decision makers in the gold mining industry and relevant government agencies who are involved in process design, process evaluation, costing, evaluation of the best practicable technology, approval of suggested effluent management systems, and so on. This paper presents some relevant background information and a discussion of the latest version of the expert system being developed by the WTC.

INTRODTUCTION The use of spiral concentrators for processing fine coal particles is an old idea that has recently gained acceptance in the 11.S. coal industry. It was not onti1 the Australian Minerals Industry developed a spiral concentrator specifically for separating coal from ash in the latter 1970's and early 1980's that spiral concentrators were seriously considered as viable equipment for processing fine coal. The Wright Coal Spiral was introduced in 1980, the Mineral Deposits Limited Mark 10 Coal Spiral was introduced in 1982, and the Vickers Wyong Coal Spiral was introduced in the latter part of 1984. Each spiral design was different and utilized constant profile troughs, constant pitch troughs, compound profile troughs, and various splitter arrangements. Mineral Deposits Limited has combined the best features of the compound profile trough and constant pitch trough with critically-placed splitters to develop the MDL LD4 spiral concentrator which is a truly efficient coal washing spiral. This spiral concentrator was introduced into the U.S. Coal Industry in 1987. Recently, Mineral Engineering Technology of the United Kingdom and Multotec of South Africa have introduced their own coal spiral designs. Spiral concentrators were first installed in fine coal processing circuits in the Australian, South African, and Canadian Coal Industries in the early 1980's and in the U.S. Coal Industry in 1985. SPIRAL CONCENTRATOR SEPARATION PROCESS The separation process that occurs within the spiral concentrator trough is very complex, as it is a combination of three gravity separation processes. When the coal slurry first enters the spiral trough, each coal and ash particle and the water is subjected to centrifugal forces. These forces cause the water, light coal particles, fine heavy ash particles, and medium middlings particles to the outer vertical portion of the spiral trough. The coarse ash particles and the coarse middling particles remain on the inside of the spiral trough. The center or transitional area of the trough contains a mixture of middlings particles and near-gravity material that is present in the slurry, as shown in Figure 1. At the same time the coal and ash particles are suhjected to centrifugal forces, the trough design (both profile and pitch) causes the particles to be subjected to flowing film and stratified bed separations. The combination of these three separations, whose efficiency is dictated by the spiral troogh design, will effect the separation of the lighter coal particles from the heavier ash and middlings particles. As the slurry flows down the spiral, the profile and pitch design of the trough will counteract the centrifugal forces on the fine, heavy ash particles and fine middlings particles and cause them to migrate from the vertical portion of the trough to the center or inner portion of the trough. At the same time, any heavy particles trapped in the transitional area of the trough will be forced to migrate to the inner edge of the trough and any coal particles will be forced to migrate to the outer edge of the trough. SPIRAL SPLI'TTEP ARRANGEMENT The critical placement of splitters along the inner edge of the trough for removal of the heavy ash particles as the slurry flows down the trough further enhances the separation of the coal particles. At the bottom of the spiral trough are product splitters arranged to make a final separation of the slurry stream into clean coal, middlings, and refuse products.

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. "Reiche Zeche is a lead-zinc-silver deposit in Freiberg, Germany, that was mined for over 800 years. Since 1969, Reiche Zeche has been a teaching and research mine with numerous adits for dewatering large amounts of inflowing water. Infrequent metal water quality monitoring in the 1980-1990s and flooding of the mine in 2002 led to a lack of relevant data. New measurements were taken at different level adits and ore veins for comparison to historical values, revealing pH levels as low as 1.95, conductivity as high as 22000 µS/cm, and an overall trend towards less acidic waters. INTRODUCTION Reiche Zeche is part of the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube, a former iron ore mine in Freiberg, Germany, in the Erzgebirge mining region of Saxony. The polymetallic sulfide ore found in Freiberg was mined from 1168 to 1969, and though it is no longer producing ore, Reiche Zeche remains as a teaching and research mine for the Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg. The most important ore minerals mined were sphalerite, galena, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and silver, and important gangue minerals include calcite, fluorite, barite, siderite, and quartz (Zänker et al 2002). Over one thousand ore loads were mined from this region during operation, which was ceased in 1969 after the lower part of the 700 meter depth was flooded, leaving only the top 200 meters under the surface open for research and teaching. Mined materials from this region can be separated into high grade ore and waste rock. High grade ore, composed of pyrite, sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite, and arsenopyrite, was brought to surface for smelting during mine operation, and spaces were backfilled with waste rock, which is the primary site of sulfide oxidation and acid mine drainage (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). The waste rock includes remnants of ore from ore loss, veins which were too small to mine, or ore minerals within host rock. Waste rock is primarily composed of biotite gneiss, with sulfides including jarosite, gypsum, minor anglesite, scorodite, and sulfur (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002). When weathered, the gneiss forms clay minerals such as illite and kaolinite (Haubrich and Tichomirowa 2002)."

Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

To start my talk, I thought it might be helpful for us to define the term "aggregate", so I went to the dictionary. Webster has several listings under "aggregate", and I found the following: "1. A mass or body of units or parts somewhat loosely associated with one another." Well, I didn't like that term "loosely" so I read on. "2. Crystals of one or more kinds of mineral or rock fragments." That sounded better, but I still read on. "3. Any of several hard inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete or mortar." That sounded even better, but it should be a little broader. So I would like to define "aggregates" for you as follows: "Hard, inert fragments of rock or minerals used alone or with cementing agents to form products essential to nearly all types of construction." Usually aggregates are sand, gravel, or crushed stone, but other minerals such as clay or shale can be heated and become aggregates. What are some of the construction uses? Well, we've already mentioned concrete, as used in streets and highways, sidewalks and parking lots, airports and all kinds of building construction, not to mention bridges and swimming pools, and docks and breakwaters, just to list some of the uses. Our way of life couldn't exist without concrete. And you can't have concrete without aggregates,

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system for dewatering waste slurries by flocculating mineral particles with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting flocs on static and/or rotary screens. This paper discusses data obtained from dewatering, rheology, and ion-exchange experiments. A possible mechanism is postulated for the attachment of PEO to claylike particles through a water bridge with the intershell waters of the exchanged ion and the polymer.

Mineral resource classification is described in both the SME and CIM Standards for Mineral Resource Reporting. The CIM Standard states “… sampling … is sufficient to assume geological and grade or quality continuity between points of observation”, thus is a function of continuity and sample spacing. Continuity can be measured by use of a variogram model, but average sample spacing in three dimensions is more difficult to measure. The declustering algorithms provided with Geostatistics software, are commonly used to weight data for statistical analysis due to the sometimes-irregular spacing between drill holes during exploration. The weights are lower when data is closer, reflecting shared influence between samples, and higher for isolated samples reflecting independence. This paper will discuss the potential to use estimates of the declustering weight as an inverse relative measure for average sample spacing to gauge the confidence of the estimate independent of the single nearest sample. PROBLEM The classification of mineral resources and reserves has long been a combination of science, past experience of the estimator, judgment, and feeling. All of the definitions as presented in the standards of the various countries that participate in CRIRSCO are similar and deal with “sample points sufficiently closely spaced to support confidence in the continuity of …” This has been interpreted as the distance between the block estimated and the nearest sample (or samples). Geostatistics gave us the calculation of the estimation variance of the block, an implicit part of the calculation of weights in Kriging, to account for the confidence in the estimate. More recently, “Kriging Efficiency” has been used, however it is still dependent on the estimation error and responds in a similar fashion to the distance to the closest sample. It is also sensitive to the variogram nugget. Many of these methods result in very low distance/high confidence measures for blocks adjacent to a sample point with confidence decreasing (sometimes rapidly) as the distance to one nearest sample increases. This results in the “spotted dog” phenomenon where individual samples are surrounded by a higher classification near each sample decaying into pattern of decreasing confidence halos. In addition to the visual image of the spots, this raises the more practical problem of mine design when the classification changes between measured, indicated and inferred. This has led to ad hoc methods to classify material within the mining block so all of the stope receives that classification. These manual methods re both labor intensive and subjective. A popular technique is a multiple search method, where the estimator defines a minimum of number of samples from a minimum number of holes within a nested set of search distance that are used to classify estimates. These specified set of increasing distances are usually proportional to the variogram range. While this is generally a good technique and overcomes the spottiness of the closest sample or kriging error, it has certain issues including:

Shortly after Asarco Inc. purchased the Ray Mines Division from Kennecott in 1986, the company began an expansion program to increase copper production. The Bechtel Corp. oversaw engineering procurement and construction management for a new in-pit crusher, overland conveyor system and concentrator facility. Construction started in May 1990 on these facets of the expansion project. The concentrator was commissioned in February 1992. The Ray concentrator uses a single-line, semiautogenous grinding circuit (SAG) with a design through¬put of 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd). In the early 1960s, Kennecott conducted pilot plant grind tests of Ray mine ores to determine their amenability to SAG and autogenous grinding methods. Those tests, though, were not followed up. During 1973 and 1982, Kennecott conducted additional pilot testing on some of the softer ore types. In 1989, Asarco ran a final series of SAG pilot grinding tests at Lakefield Research, which became the basis of the new Ray concentrator grinding circuit. Even though pilot test work demonstrated that some of the Ray ores gave satisfactory results during the autogenous grinding tests, the SAG option was selected for the primary comminution device. Due to the wide range of mineralogies encountered in the Ray ore body, selective mining and blending of these ores would be required to achieve the necessary production efficiencies and throughput rates using an autogenous grinding circuit.

It is widely accepted that particles stabilize flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Furthermore, there is currently no technique that allows the prediction of the effect of different flotation reagents on froth stability, without carrying out froth stability experiments.

At the Beckley Mine in southern West Virginia, forecasting unstable roof conditions in advance of mining is accomplished by using a rating system that combines historical information on mine roof failures with known mine geology. Failure frequency rates are derived for each category of roof rock composition, unit thickness, structure, and extraction ratio. In this manner, known geological environments are rated according to instability based on actual experience. Drill hole control and geological interpretation provide the basis for forecasting unstable conditions beyond working faces. The forecasting technique has assisted mine management in reducing fall frequencies by 80% over the past two years compared to the first five years of operation. This reduction in fall frequency was accomplished by modifying the plan of advancing sections to minimize mining exposure to unstable roof conditions.

National Steel Pellet Company (NSPC) conducted pilot scale testing and computer simulation studies which indicates that the capacity of the secondary grinding mill could be increased and that concentrate grade improvement could be expected with improved classification in the grinding circuit. Based on these studies, a decision was made to modify one secondary ball mill line at NSPC to include both cyclone and screen classification with magnetic separation applied to the circulating load. This paper will briefly discuss the studies leading to the decision to modify the circuit, the design of the modified circuit and the initial start-up and operating experience.

Following the completion of the 7,600 m primary access tunnel by Kiewit/Parsons Brinckerhoff (K/PB) in April 1997, an exploratory East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was constructed at the Yucca Mountain Project over the proposed future repository block for high level nuclear wastes. The 2,681 m (8,796 LF) East-West Cross Drift Tunnel was excavated through volcanic tuffs having zones of incompetent rock using a re-built Robbins 5.000 m (16’-5”) hardrock TBM with a special arrangement of supporting equipment. Details of the unusual site and contract conditions will be discussed as well as with the unique tunnel equipment specified by the Owner. This portion of the Yucca Mountain project required eight months to complete.

"The Indianapolis Deep Rock Tunnel Connector (DRTC)—first in a vast network of storm water storage tunnels below Indiana, USA—was a wildly successful endeavor. Crews for the Shea/Kiewit JV drove a 6.2 m Robbins Main Beam TBM to world record rates. The machine achieved 124.9 m/day, 515.1 m/week, and 1,754 m/month in limestone and dolomite rock. The advance rates can be attributed to many factors including ground conditions and knowledgeable crew, but continuous conveyors are also of key importance. The novel conveyor system, manufactured by The Robbins Company, enabled continuous tunneling in a difficult layout that included two 90-degree curves and two S-curves. Spanning 11,777 m in its longest iteration, the system included nine booster drives plus a main drive. A vertical belt moved muck up the 76 m deep shaft to a radial stacker for temporary storage. The system, one of the most complex in North America and the first to operate in 90-degree curves, made swift tunneling possible. This paper will examine the world-class tunneling done at the Indianapolis DRTC and the role of continuous conveyance in reaching high advance rates. The logistics of the system will also be examined as it could apply to future tunneling projects with similarly complex layouts. INTRODUCTION The Indianapolis Deep Rock Tunnel Connector (DRTC) is the first phase of a nearly 28-mile long network of deep rock tunnels being built 76 m beneath the City of Indianapolis, Indiana by Citizens Energy Group. The Deep Rock Tunnel Connector (DRTC) Project is a 12.2 km, 5.5 m diameter tunnel constructed by S-K JV, a joint venture between J.F. Shea Construction and Kiewit Infrastructure Co. The tunnel is a $179 million project and is the first segment and southernmost portion of a deep, large diameter conveyance and storage tunnel system to provide overflow relief during wet weather events. The project is estimated to be completed in 2017 and will initially deliver 204,000 cubic meters of the planned 1 million cubic meters of CSO storage for treatment, as well as provide future connections to other tunnels in the overall system (see Figure 1)."

INTRODUCTION Controlled blasting is used at some time during most civil engineering projects where there is rock excavation. Controlled blasting is often necessary because the blasting must take place in the near proximity of adjacent structures. In other instances, the blasting is controlled because a smooth perimeter is desired to minimize rock support and overbreak. The construction of tunnels and shafts for subways, rock excavations for foundations and the excavation of road cuts for interstate highways, sometimes require blasting operations which must be conducted in an urban environment. Unfortunately, blasting operations produce unwanted sounds and vibration along with their beneficial effects. Thus, in the writing of specifications for blasting in an urban environment, potential damage to adjacent structures by ground vibrations must be considered, possible damage to windows from airblasts must be considered, potential damage from fly rock must be considered, and the discomfort to people from ground vibrations, airblast, and noise must be taken into account. The contractor or the owner's engineer is faced with determining the maximum weight of explosives which may be detonated without damage to structures on adjacent property. If the weight of explosive is overestimated, the resulting damage to adjacent structures may result in costly losses. But, if the engineer or contractor is too conservative, and the weight of explosive becomes too restrictive, progress of the project may be curtailed and the cost of excavation will increase accordingly. Design models for belt conveyors used in mines predict both the belt power requirements and belt tensions. Conveyors with slightly downhill profiles are more complex to predict due to the way that models such as CEMA interpret friction. Performance of a particular conveyor in relation to other conveyors in the same system requires an analysis of natural stopping times, braked times and take-up location. A review of CEMA-based PC models is presented for design of underground multi-flight belt systems.

The rugged foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Washington County, Southwestern Pennsylvania, lend their terrain very well to the use of aerial tram systems to carry refuse from Bethlehem Mines' two preparation plants to disposal areas some distance from the plant site. Bethlehem Nines Corporation has three deep mines in this area, all of which are mining the Pittsburgh Coal Seam, The raw coal is prepared for metallurgical use in a preparation plant at each mine, Trio of these preparation plants, Mine No, 51, Ellsworth and Mine No. 58 Marianna, use aerial tram systems to dispose of reject material.

In recent times, smelter off gases treatment plants have become more efficient and environmentally friendly. Where in the past it was acceptable to process only high strength, treatable furnace gases, new smelters must now treat primary gases and abate dust and SO2 from secondary gases: Processing smelter gases can present some interesting challenges. Some equipment can see varying concentrations of sulfuric acid, up to the boiling point, with a periodic table of contaminates thrown in for good measure. Treating weaker secondary gases have, in the past, been cost prohibitive. Nowadays, new technology, like physical absorption or catalytic carbon, show promise for economically treating low strength secondary gases. Modem smelters do a much better job of treating the SO2 laden gases generated by the smelting process but significant challenges remain.

The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.
