Stripping of gold and silver from carbon is effected by means of two main processes (AARL and ZADRA ). The main rate-enhancing parameter in the stripping of gold and silver is temperature. A secondary rate-enhancing parameter is ionic strength. (1) Stripping is usually conducted within a solution containing sodium cyanide (0.1 -0.5% ) and caustic ( 1 -3%). The development of a chemistry that increases the rate of gold and silver stripping from carbon in a manner proportional to its concentration is described. Its use in atmospheric and pressure strips is also outlined.

This study emphasizes the importance of understanding the factors that influence the throwing of flyrock in mining operations, a significant hazard to both workers and nearby structures. Moreover, it highlights how blasting engineers, when estimating flyrock occurrences and their travel distance, typically rely on input parameters such as powder factor (PF), hole length (HL), subdrill (SD), spacing (S), hole diameter (D), burden (B) and stemming length (ST), while overlooking crucial factors like velocity of detonation (VOD) and charge per bank cubic meter (CPBCM). Through analysis using support vector machine (SVM) modeling in MATLAB, the study underscores the impact of including or excluding VOD and CPBCM on flyrock throw distance.

In collaboration with Kennametal Inc. and corry rubber corporation, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a drill bit isolator to address noise overexposures associated with roof bolting machines in underground coal mines. NIOSH laboratory studies confirmed that the drill bit isolator reduces noise during drilling. Field studies were needed to confirm that a noise reduction could be obtained under working conditions and that the device was sufficiently durable. This paper reports results of field tests of the device conducted at five underground coal mines. Noise reduction was assessed by comparing the operator?s noise exposure during drilling with and without the drill bit isolator. Durability was assessed by recording the number of holes and total feet drilled with each bit isolator until either the test period ended or the device failed. The results from these tests showed that the device is an effective noise control in a mine environment. The field-tested drill bit isolators provided a noise reduction of 3-5 db(A). Of nine devices tested for durability, five exceeded 610 m (2,000 ft) drilled and two exceeded 762 m (2,500 ft) drilled before failure. Durability issues found in the field tests led to final production optimizations that have resulted in a commercially available product for drilling with 35-mm- (1.3-in.-) diameter roof bits and hexagonal drill steels.

"The earliest known use of cobalt was to make blue glass in Mesopotamia before 2000 B.C.E. Since then, innovations across many diverse industrial sectors transformed cobalt into an essential commodity for contemporary society. The physical and chemical properties of the element cobalt and its alloys and compounds make them indispensable for a variety of applications, including aircraft engines, hybrid electric vehicles, machine tools, missile guidance systems, petroleum refining and smartphones. As a major industrialized nation, the United States is a leading consumer of cobalt and cobalt-containing products. However, with few exceptions, U.S. cobaltcontaining ore deposits are of low cobalt grade. Historically, U.S. cobalt mine and refinery output have not met domestic cobalt demand. As a result, U.S. cobalt chemical and alloy producers need to procure most of their cobalt from the international market, which can become susceptible to supply risk.The 1978 Cobalt Crisis illustrates supply risk. At that time, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) (then known as Zaire) was the world’s leading producer of mined and refined cobalt. An insurgent invasion of the country’s copper-cobalt mining region during a period of high cobalt demand and low producer inventories caused a temporary supply shortage in the international market. The monthly average cobalt spot price increased from $18/ kg ($8/lb) before the crisis to $99/kg ($45/lb) seven months later. The high price and concern about potential disruptions in supply prompted manufacturers to reduce or substitute for cobalt where possible, and encouraged increased recovery of cobalt from scrap. The DRC has regained its position as the leading producer of mined cobalt globally and continues to be characterized by high governance risks (U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, 2015; World Bank, undated). This article will present current and historical world cobalt production trends, which can help inform discussion about the variety of international supply chain risks consequential to its trade."

This paper is concerned with the problem of calculating ground movement that occurs as a consequence of mining. Solution to this problem is straight forward in principle but rather complex in practice. The complexities of the problem arise from the ever present constraints of technology and economics. However, the identity of these constraints is often obscured by a faulty understanding of the fundamentals of the problem and a lack of appreciation of current computational capabilities and costs. As a consequence much time and effort are sometimes wasted on gathering information that is of little direct value to ground control programs while important input data are neglected. This paper therefore reviews the essentials of the process of formulating the ground movement problem. Emphasis is upon application to longwall mining, although much of the discussion applies to other mining methods as well. In many instances, the hardrock term stope could be substituted for longwall panel because the fundamentals of the problem are independent of the excavation dimensions and numerical values of rock properties. The latter affect the outcome of a calculation, of course, but not the underlying formulation. Only the major features of the problem are discussed in this brief review. The objective of the discussion is the generation of a reliable basis for developing a technically sound ground control strategy. Any rational ground control strategy must be consistent with basic physical laws. For example, under static conditions, equations of equilibrium must be satisfied. Operational, that is, tactical, details may vary widely with local conditions, but the basic approach must be based on physical laws. The alternative empirical route is intrinsically unreliable and unnecessary as well. Empirical descriptions of ground motion caused by mining including recent statistical curve fits to specialized data sets (for example, surface subsidence data) as well as antiquated "theories" of ground pressure and so forth, however dignified with mathematical formulas, are hardly worthy of the label "theory". Extrapolation of statistical data is always accompanied by rapidly diverging confidence limits, while empirical equations simply lack predictive capability under circumstances even slightly different from those of the original development. For example, applications of surface subsidence curves generated empirically in the United Kingdom to coal mines in the United States generally result in considerably greater subsidence and wider subsidence troughs than actually observed. Locally, empirical criteria for specific ground control actions may be made practical through trial and error, but such tactics are no basis for the development of a general ground control strategy. In this regard, it is worthwhile to recall the traditional scientific distinctions between speculation, hypothesis and law, between the empirical and the proven.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes S.A. (Disputada) is proactively implementing closure and reclamation planning activities at its mining and beneficiation facilities (mining facilities) in Chile where regulations governing mine reclamation are not yet fully in place. These activities are being implemented to improve currently employed measures to protect human health and the environment and to enhance reclamation and facilitate future closure with regard to these areas when mining is completed. As part of this process, Disputada, with the assistance of Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed recommendations and guidelines for future closure and reclamation of the Disputada sites. These recommendations and guidance incorporate planning and operational and post-operational design considerations and practices, and standards used by the mining industry and regulatory agencies around the world. The criteria presented in the guidance are based on achieving conditions that will be suitable for the anticipated post-mining land use. This paper discusses the process and approach taken, and the results.

Introduction There has been much said recently about the sophistication of Japanese management in turning out reliable, inexpensive products, such as cars and steel. Techniques include consensus management and quality control circles. These have been touted as prime reasons for inexpensive Japanese products. An often neglected, but major factor in the equation of cheap export goods is the role played by Japanese trading companies. These venerable institutions are a vital factor in Japan's overall strategy of keeping the price of raw materials at the absolute lowest levels. This is critical to the country's economy since the nation must import more than 85% of all its coal. A country that is so desperate for imported raw materials would appear, at first glance, to be at the mercy of its suppliers. In Japan's case, however, the opposite is true. With the exception of brief' windows in 1974-75 and 1980-81, Japan has been in the driver's seat in negotiating contract terms. Due to its dominant role in world coal trade, Japan's situation can be described as a de facto monopsony. By definition, a monopsony is a market situation where the product, in this case coal, is offered by many sellers, but is sought by one buyer. This has been due to the role of Japanese trading companies in dealing with suppliers. Table I depicts trading companies by size in 1982. Mitsubishi and Mitsui are overshadowing in terms of size. The others, though less significant, play a vital role in orchestrating the marketplace. Three critical building blocks on which the strategy of the trading companies are based include intelligence networks, exceptional training of company traders, and shrewd contract negotiation practices. Intelligence Networks All success is derived from these three key components. Of the three blocks, intelligence gathering is the most important. With all the sophistication of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Interpol, and the Surete', the Japanese trading company's method is every bit as competent and far more gentlemanly. Friendly competition is the key to survival. Although one Japanese trading company appears to be in ardent competition with its rival Japanese trading companies, when studied closely, a totally different picture emerges. The end user nominates certain trading companies as market channels and informally guarantees they will receive compensation regardless of which company wins a specific order. With this concept in mind, the pressure is off. The trading company can aim at getting the best price for the end user. Therefore, bargain, beat, and share information. Do whatever is necessary, but get the lowest price for the end user. Even with the game so gentlemanly, no victory could be assured without an adequate intelligence network. Proper intelligence is only as good as the sources drawn from. But how is one assured of getting the right information? The answer is verification. Verification is comprised of numerous independent sources each cross checked at a central processing unit in Tokyo. Each major Japanese trading company receives input, not only from its own trader, but from other trading companies as well. In a continuing effort to upgrade tunnel design and construction practice, the New York City Transit Authority sponsored a geotechnical monitoring program on a recently completed section of the E. 63rd Street line in mid-town Manhattan. The purpose of the program was to document rock behavior as well as temporary and final rock support systems to provide a possible basis for either confirmation or modificification to design methods and construction specifications. This paper describes those portions of the study associated with rock behavior and temporary support systems. The entire study included monitoring of rock movements above the tunnel as well as adjacent to a 36.6m (120 ft) shaft, monitoring of stresses in steel ribs, monitoring of loads in rock bolts in two test sections and monitoring of stresses in the final concrete lining. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Route 131-A, Section 4 is located in mid-town Manhattan extending from under the Central-Park Zoo on Fifth Avenue eastward under 63rd Street to the end of contract between Madison and Park Avenue. Figure 1 is a Project Locus Map. The contract included approximately 355m (1165 l.f.) of 4 track tunnel(13.4m (44 ft) wide by 13.7m (45 ft) high excavated dimensions) plus a 22.9m (75 ft) by 19.8m (65 ft) by 36.6m (120 ft) deep ventilation shaft. The entire tunnel and most of the excavation shaft was excavated in metamorphic rock, known locally as the Manhattan Schist. The depth to tunnel invert varied from approximately 27.4m (90 ft) at the west end of the contract to 35.Om (115 ft) at the east end. Rock cover above the excavated crown varied from approximately 6.7m (22 ft) at the approximate mid-point of the contract to 18.9m (62 ft) at the western end. The influence of reduction roasting and thermal shock on the grindability of a refractory low-grade Michigan iron ore was examined in bench scale tests. The quantitative effects of the various treatments were evaluated at three sieve levels: 48, 100, and 400 mesh, using ball mill grindability and work index parameters as response indicators. Data from the testing program were analyzed statistically as a means of isolating the effects of cooling rate, roasting temperature, and ore chemical condition. All three variables were found to have an important influence on the grindability of the treated ore; ore chemical condition and roasting temperature had the most pronounced effects.

The application of many standard estimation techniques to deposits with a significant degree of folding or faulting can be difficult, mainly because of the necessity to maintain the correct spatial relationship between the samples and the points being estimated. Various transformations must be applied to the points of interest before variography and estimation can be applied, followed by back transformation into the original space. This paper presents an unfolding technique developed by Gemcom Software International that minimizes the inherent distortion in the process and also provides an example of the technique in folded and faulted situations.

In the estimation of recoverable resources, geostatistical techniques such as Multiple Indicator Kriging require a change of support correction to derive theoretical recoveries based on an assumed level of mining selectivity. The change of support models most widely used in practice entail model based generalized corrections either on a global or local basis. Examples include the affine and indirect lognormal methods. Change of support corrections derived empirically through short-scale conditional simulation realizations often show notable differences compared with theoretical corrections determined using model variogram parameters. The existing changes of support models are reviewed and an alternative method is proposed.

The motion of grinding balls has been the subject of study since 191 9 when Davis published the first treatise on this subject. Subsequently came the notion that knowing mill power draft, using Bond equation or others, is sufficient to do an analysis of grinding. Next, population balance models provided accurate scale-up from small laboratory size mills to very large plant size mills. However, this success was not repeated when dealing with semiautogenous grinding mill. The study of charge motion with the discrete element method provides support and answers to such issues. Besides providing an accurate picture of charge motion in large mills, the method begs the investigator to study grate and pulp lifter equally critically with fluid dynamic principles. Hence, in recent years, the field of comminution in grinding mills is advancing on a firm footing.

"Overburden strata deformation monitoring is one of the key problems in ground control. Using geophysical method through surface drilling to detect strata deformation is commonly used in the industry. In this paper, a geophysical method based on the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) system were conducted in the laboratory, where a DOFS-based strata deformation monitoring experiment was performed with three physical models. The results show that the DOFS method precisely detects the rock mass deformation and strata structure forming with the Brillouin frequency shifts (BFS) representation. The BFS curves are divided into three phases, which reflects the horizontal three zones developed in the overburden. The BFS distribution presents a multiple stages form, the 1st stage corresponds to the caving zone and the 2nd stage corresponds to the fracture zone. Based on the multiple stages form, the evolution of the water flowing through fractured zone have been determined and the controlling effect of key strata over the water flowing fracture has been pointed out. In the end, the comparison validation proves the accuracy and reliability of this method, and it could be a new approach for the ground control research. INTRODUCTION Overburden rock strata above the work face space will propagate from slight deformation, part destruction to violent movement because of the underground coal mining. It is fundamental and an intrinsic requirement of ground control to monitor the mining-induced rock mass deformation.[1] Overburden strata have their significant mechanical behaviors and movement under damage deformation and fracture. Overburden strata deformation affect the mining ground pressure control directly, and performance in the relationship of supporting equipment and the surrounding rock, the mining-induced fracture distribution and the loss of underground water resource, the ground surface structure stability and the ecological environment.[2] From the perspective of the concept of safe and efficient scientific coal mining: the overburden strata deformation is an important part of mining method selection and reasonable supporting solutions decision which can solve the issues like the roof supporting force calculation, overburden fracture distribution and gas drainage, ground subsidence, separation of coal and rock control and top-coal recovery rate and so on. From the perspective of green and ecological mining: the overburden strata deformation is the key basis of studying the mining-induced ground subsidence and mining area ecological damage, and such engineering problem like environmental protection in mining area, ecological restoration in mining subsided land and the water conservation in fragile ecology area of mining could be solved based on it.[3-6] Therefore, the mining-induced overburden strata deformation is the key of ground control and needs to be controlled artificially."

Today, man is able to probe space because of technological advancements including the ability to control certain combustion reactions very precisely. The recent adjustment of the attitude of Skylab by radio command from earth is an excellent example of such control. It is strange, and indeed unfortunate, that very little is known about the mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, the primary fuel for rotary kilns. The selection of a coal for direct pulverized firing of a rotary lime kiln may be determined by trial and error, persistence of sales personnel, proximate analyses, grindability, or apparent BTU cost. Occasionally, the only question asked is, "How much lime will it make?" To study the behavior of a particle of coal in the combustion stream of a rotary kiln is most difficult. We must, therefore, discuss the general mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, and relate this mechanism to the selection of a proper coal for a rotary kiln. The classic three T's -time, temperature, turbulence -must be enlarged upon for a better understanding of the problem. Pulverized coal occupies only 0.01 per cent of the volume of air required for its combustion. This mixture behaves like a gas and the general laws governing the movement of solid particles in gasses are in effect. The differential velocity between air and coal particles depends on forced and natural convection, diffusion, and the length of time each particle is in the combustion space. As a particle of coal absorbs heat from its surroundings, it begins to give off volatiles". These gasses ignite as their kindling temperature is reached, and burn readily because of the excess oxygen immediately available. Combustion proceeds at this stage by the outward diffusion of gas from the coal particle into the surrounding oxygen-rich envelope. We could say combustion at this stage represents a small coal particle surrounded by an envelope of volatiles burning at their point of contact with sufficient oxygen. This release or expulsion of gasses from the coal may result in exfoliation or disintegration of the coal particle. If this occurs, and it is desirable that it should, it will accelerate the final stages of combustion. The escape of volatile material from the particle of coal and its subsequent combustion will cause increased turbulence around that individual particle. Ignition is maintained by radiation from gasses and solids in the combustion system, and most importantly, re-radiation from the kiln refractories and the process load.

In the late1970s, mineral processing plants producing copper sulfide concentrates and oxide leaching feedstocks went online with operating tonnages that exceeded traditional installations. This created a need for larger capacity belt conveyors and apron feeders. Apron feeders are slow moving, heavily loaded conveyors that feed a deep bed of ore from a bulk holding location (a bunker) as a controlled stream, often into a large capacity crusher. Apron feeders use sprockets and caterpillars, while belt feeders use rubber belts with motorized head pulleys to convey the material. The damaging of belts and clogging of transfer points from tramp iron required larger magnetic separators and the removal of tramp metal cannot prevent these serious problems. Corrective action at this location is important for two reasons: Removing tramp iron early in the ore stream protects downstream equipment from potential costly damage. Installing apron feeder magnets before the primary large capacity crusher means that secondary and tertiary crushing steps (made up of multiple parallel units) operate more efficiently, since tramp metal is removed at the onset.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. An integral part of site investigations for shafts and underground workings should be hydrogeologic evaluations of the need for and method of ground-water control. Such investigations should include: 1. Classification of the problem by aquifer type. 2. Integration of other site investigations with hydrogeologic programs, including assessment of the need for water control. 3. The 1.1 Ga Midcontinent rift of North America has many similarities to the geology of the Voisey's Bay region in Labrador and the geology of the Noril'sk region in Siberia. These similarities include the hosting of large volumes of sulfur- undersaturated and trace-element-enriched basalt, having igneous centers characterized by crustal contamination, being characterized by metal depletions in some mafic units (an indication of prior sulfide segregation) and having known occurrences of Ni-Cu sulfide mineralization. These similarities along with new geophysical data and refined models for Ni-Cu sulfide deposits suggest that the Midcontinent rift probably contains undiscovered Cu-Ni [±] PGE sulfide deposits, some of which could be the size and grade of a Voisey's Bay or Noril'sk deposit. In particular, intrusions and related feeder systems that occur in northern Michigan and Wisconsin, as well as to the southwest along the rift margin, deserve serious examination.

A field investigation was conducted by the Ventilation Division, Pittsburgh Health Technology Center (PHTC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to evaluate the effectiveness of a blowing face ventilation system utilizing a water sprayfan system and a single inlet flooded bed dust collector (scrubber) in controlling methane liberation in the face area while mining at brattice distances up to 12.2 meters (40 feet) from the face. The rated capacity of the scrubber was 117 m3/s (4,145 cfm) of air. Results from the investigation indicated a methane dilution capacity of 0.57 m3/s (20 cfm) with the air quantity behind the line brattice averaging 138.7 m3/s (4,900 cfm).
