Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

INTRODUCTION From 1967 to 1976 in the Federal Republic of Germany about loo km tunnels and 125 underground stations were constructed for municipal and commuter railways solely. Additional a remarkable amount of road tunnels and sewers were built. In 1977/78 a further 27 km railway tunnels, 3.5 km road tunnels and 65 km sewers and utility lines were under construction. This shows an enormous volume of tunnel construction work. In connection with this activity various technical research and development programmes have been carried out. They deal with nearly all fields of underground works as for example soil and ground exploration, excavating and lining techniques, calculation and last but not least waterproofing problems. It is impossible within the framework of this report to touch on all the problems. Therefore, only one problem area with its different aspects will be discussed: waterproofing systems and their last developments in Germany, especially, joint sealing with special consideration of the waterproofing of concrete segmental tunnel lining (1)

1. Theory of Wet Dust Suppression Techniques Wet dust suppression is the utilization of a liquid for the control, reduction or elimination of airborne dust, or the suppression of such dust at its source. Effective control involves: a. The confinement of the dust within the dust producing area by a curtain of moisture. b. The wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture. c. The formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid. From the standpoint of effectiveness, however, it leaves much to be desired. As a result, a tech¬nique has been devised in which very small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with water to greatly enhance its dust suppression qualities. The terms "dust control compounds, wetting agents and surface active agents" are frequently used interchangeably. Although dust control compounds represent a specific type of wetting agent, a great many wetting agents are far from satisfactory for dust control. "Wetting Agents" is a broad category which covers such items as emulsifiers, solubilizers, detergents, foamers, penetrants, thickeners, etc. Dust control compounds, on the other hand, are carefully formulated blends in which one or more special surface active agents have been incorporated.

Gold extraction from refractory ores as a percentage of total gold production is increasing. The processing technology options for treating difficult-to-process refractory ores are also increasing. The best processing option is dependent on many factors including feed grade and the cause for ore refractoriness. The causes for ore refractoriness are many foldCpreg-rob­bing, encapsulation in pyrite, arsenopyrite or silica, presence of cyanocides, presence of cyanide-insoluble gold compounds, etc.1. The first step in the process development of a refractory gold deposit is to determine the cause for ore refractoriness. The traditional approach of undertaking detailed mineralogical examination of ore types, major and minor mineral constituents and their association does not necessarily provide the metallur­gist all the information needed for characterization of gold-bear­ing ores. For process development programs it is desirable to complement traditional mineralogical methods with diagnostic leach testing, which attempts to quantify the deportation of gold in various mineral matrices. This paper briefly reviews the diagnostic leaching proce­dures and its applications for a wide range of gold-bearing refractory ores, both primary and by-product.

Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examining the cost effects of many factors. Most mines use a bottom line measure based on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. For specific tasks, productivity can be measured or predicted using either field measurement or modeling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture. Factors are time- and task-oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck's lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods. Items such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks. This article focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost. The packed column flotation cell is an awesome separation device. Virtually unknown and untested, the packed column flotation cell is one of the ten most important developments in mineral processing of the 21st century. Though experimental and industrial data is limited, it is clear that the packed column flotation cell is two to three orders of magnitude better than the conventional flotation cell and one to one and a half orders of magnitude better than the open column flotation cell. With the modern packing taking up less than one percent of the packed column, column blocking does not occur. For a packed column operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the estimated mean time between failures (MTBF) is one hundred thousand hours or roughly twelve years. With no moving parts, lower maintenance costs, lower power consumption and inherent operating stability, the packed column is a powerful separating machine. Because there is little meaningful data for comparing the packed column to the conventional flotation cell and the open column flotation cell, much of the material presented in this paper are guesstimates. They are disinterested guesstimate made by the authors after extensive theoretical work and reviewing the known facts. In the authors' opinion, no available data contradicts the guesstimate. The authors expect that there may be errors as large as three hundred percent. Even three hundred percent errors will not change the conclusions of this paper. The packed column flotation cell is a formidable separating device. To understand the problems of comparing the three types of flotation cells, consider the fact that the three cells may have different modes of separation. One of the authors, Meloy, believes that in the conventional cell, the primary particle separation takes place in the liquor with secondary separation taking place in the froth, while for open column flotation, all the separation takes place in the froth. However, he believes that in the packed column a large part of the separation may take place on the walls of the packing. If this is true, not only is the method of modeling each type of cell different, but the method of particle selection in the cell is different. This means that one type of cell may be better at differentiating between two different types of particles. There is a growing body of literature on open and packed column flotation. Efficient methods for removal of copper from heap leach solutions without mobile organic phases are a current mining industry need. To satisfy this need a selective, high-capacity, durable solid material is required. The INEEL has developed a set of materials based upon current solvent extraction chelates that provide selective copper concentration in the presence of high concentrations of iron. In contrast to conventional solvent extractions, our strategy anchors the chelators to a non-polymeric solid substrate through the use of a custom designed linker molecule. The fundamental synthetic routes to these materials have already been established and attachment to the solid surfaces achieved in an efficient manner. Our continuing research is focused on the optimization of the synthetic pathways to these solid materials and the evaluation of their copper capturing capabilities.

In order to filter small amounts of fine slimy solids the reversible cake-filtration process was developed. The filterable solids contents lion in feeds can range from less than 1 ppm up to about 5%. The relative advantages of this process, are usually the greatest in the range of 0.05% to 1.0% filterable solids. Filterable solids that average in particle size about 20 microns& are non-compressible are very easy for this filtration process. Some feeds have been all sub-micron in particle size. A 1/8 inch thick cake is considered to be very thick. The usual cake is between 13/2 and 1/16 inch thick. A new line of injection molded plastic filter plates were developed for use with the reversible cake filtration process. The first commercial sized installation of this system was made 3 years ago in the Wakefield Y.M.C.A. swimming pool. Over 70 filters ranging in size from one plate to 63 plates have been produced. In addition to the process advantages there are the low cost and corrosion resistance advantages of the plastic plates.

With the advent of the Clean Air Act and the installation of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) equipment (scrubbers) on coal fired power plants, the management of solid wastes has taken on added importance. Aside from the large amounts of fly ash and bottom ash usually generated, large quantities of liquids in the form of scrubber sludge are also produced. These wastes must be disposed of within the constraints of land and water quality regulations. This paper describes the practices adopted by the electric utility industry in denting with this problem, including methods of generation and treatment, quantities and characteristics of the materials, and transportation and disposal practices. The paper also briefly describes final product characteristics and several applications for commercial utilization and land reclamation.

It is well known that processing of the high-silicon bauxites for obtaining alumina by the hydrochemical Bayer process is irrational due to the significant losses of alumina and alkali with red mud. The main source of losses of the mentioned compounds under the conditions of leaching by the Bayer process is the formation of difficultly soluble sodium alumosilicate of the composition Na20 .Al203, 2Si02 . n H20. A conventional method of an extra recovery of alumina as well as of regeneration of alkali out of red mud is the high-temperature sintering of the latter with soda and limestone with the subsequent leaching of sodium aluminate from the sinter by water or soda solution. A sequential version of the Bayer-sintering flow chart recommended for the prosessing of bauxites with an increased content of silica is based on this method. However, the sintering method is not the only alkaline method allowing to make an extra recovery of alumina likewise of alkali from red mud. Our investigations showed/I/, that the components mentioned can be recovered by a pure hydrochemical method of treating red mud with concentrated alkaline solutions, with lime (Ca0) being present, that was earlier succesfully used in the development of the hydrochemical method of processing nepheline rocks/2/. The Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has partnered with a narrow vein, hard rock underground mine to research the effects of the binder content on the elasticity and post-peak ductility of cemented hydraulic backfill (CHB). This is part of a larger study to enhance the long-term integrity of ground support in underground mines. As mining advances deeper and stresses increase, CHB mix designs will benefit if they can be modified to handle higher levels of strain which are induced by an increased stope closure, typically affected by a reduction in stope width and increased mining depth, or through dynamic loading resulting from a local seismic event. This portion of the research examined the impact of reductions in binder and their impact on Young’s modulus, peak strength, and post-peak ductility.

The Bureau conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flotability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires but not particularly efficient. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish a fire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100 pet utilization.

Virtual Reality (VR) is a concept in which the human experience of perceiving and interacting with a computer-modeled environment is achieved through the use of sensors and effectors. It is an advanced fonn of computer graphics where the images are generated based upon where the user looks and how the user moves. As personal-computer-based (PC-based) instruction gains acceptance as an innovative approach to providing safety training, VR offers the capability of providing a multisensory, rather than merely a multimedia, mode of presentation. VR has been effectively used by the military for training tank commanders and by hospitals for training surgeons. However, these applications have been limited to small numbers of highly skilled participants. The purpose of this paper is to examine VR's potential for enhancing the hazard awareness of larger numbers of individuals in a broad-based approach to mine safety training, such as new-miner, annual-refresher, and independent-contractor training.

The Orchard Valley Mine, a large underground coal mine located in western Colorado, experienced a major mine fire during an idled Sunday on June 1, 1986. This mine had extensive problems with spontaneous combustion near the coal outcrop. Spontaneous combustion has been determined to be the probable cause of that fire. Preparing for a mine emergency was an on-going task. Once the emergency occurred, much of the preparation work was implemented and aided in controlling the situation. Later, the successes and shortfalls that arose from that emergency were analyzed for future course of action. This paper summarizes the activity that led up to the major fire, the handling of that emergency, the lessons learned, and the changes implemented.

INTRODUCTION The use of roof and rock bolts to reinforce the strata is an established method of rock support in both underground and surface excavations. However, the need to drill a hole, extract the drill-rods, and then place the bolt is time-consuming and costly. This becomes even more significant if the bolting is repetitive and extensive as in coal mining. Though the main thrust of this development was directed towards coal mining, the basic concepts are also widely applicable to all excavations. The authors, therefore, feel that this innovation should be of interest in rapid excavation and in tunneling. In the case of coal mining, it has been established from past statistics that the roof-bolting operation is the most hazardous activity. This is primarily because of the operator being exposed to unsupported ground. It is evident that remote installation of roof bolts would markedly improve the safety of the operation, if accomplished more readily with self-drilling bolts rather than the conventional two-step variety operation. Thus, in addition to increasing productivity, this development can be considered to be a milestone towards further improvements. The objective of this program was to establish the technical and economic feasibility of self-drilling roof bolts for use in coal mines. It might be clarified at the outset that this work was, therefore, directed primarily at showing that workable self-drilling bolts with less cost can be developed, which could be effectively used in mines. It was not to fabricate a production model bolt.

Mining operations of Freeport Indonesia (FI) are located approximately 4 degrees -6' south latitude, 137 -7' east longitude in Irian Jaya the eastern most state of Indonesia (Figure I). The mines are located approximately 96 km (60 miles) from coast in the Carstenz Mountain range. The ore bodies are between 2900 and 4000 meters (9500 and 13 000 ft) elevation.

Attempts were made to improve the recovery of coarse phosphate particles by adding selected frothers or precoated fine particles. A number of frothers for floating, specifically coarse coal and metallic minerals, were examined. Two of the frothers increased the flotation recovery of coarse phosphate by 3% on bench scale. Plant evaluation yielded improvements in overall phosphate recovery in the presence of these frothers. Addition of fine particles was also found to enhance coarse flotation under given conditions. Size, amount, and hydrophobicity of the fines added was determined to have a major influence on the coarse flotation efficiency. The grade of the product with and without frothers and particulate additives remained the same. Change in froth stability and viscosity are believed to be the primary reasons for enhanced recovery of coarse phosphate particles.

This paper considers the international market trends of the rare earths and how they are strongly influenced by the by-product/co-product nature of their mining and processing. The two main economic minerals for the rare earths are bastnasite and monazite. Monazite is primarily a by-product of mining ilmenite and rutile and is affected by changes in these markets as well as the presence of thorium. Bastnasite is a by-product of mining iron ore in China and a stand-alone product in the USA. The paper will use conceptional relationships and empirical data to delineate the various by-products/co-products relationships and how they determine observed international market behavior.

"INTRODUCTION What is the primary responsibility for geo-engineers in mining? Early in my career, I was asked this question by an experienced engineer. After explaining some various tasks, I was informed that the main responsibility was to monitor. Although this proved true for many cases, I came to understand that monitoring is merely one means to achieve the primary responsibility of a geo-engineer – ensure the safety of all personnel. The potential for groundwater to impact stability allows this responsibility to be shared with hydrogeologists as well. Inherently, we monitor to identify risks; we analyze designs and develop models to mitigate risks; and we are provided opportunities to explain to supervisors the geo-risks to personnel and mine plans that will result from particular courses of action. A couple years ago, I took an opportunity to share experiences from the first several years of my career as a geotechnical engineer with junior geo-engineering staff within my company. The intent was to share situations that were a part of my development, so they could learn and understand their responsibility to the safety of all personnel. Similarly, the purpose of this paper will be to share these thoughts with new geo-engineers in the industry in order to help prepare them for the challenges they will face. WHAT IS OUR PURPOSE? A senior hydrogeologist shared an experience that occurred in their career. The experienced hydrogeologist had spent some time with the hydrogeology staff, most of them relatively new to the mining industry, to understand how they viewed, and carried out, what they perceived as their responsibility at an active mining operation. After a couple months of observing and mentoring, the senior hydrogeologist met with everyone and posed the question above. I am sure that most junior geo-engineers would start explaining different tasks or projects that they must complete. The list would include monitor groundwater levels, track slope movement, evaluate designs, build models, oversee drilling programs, etc. These individuals did as well their supervisor. After going around the room allowing each individual to answer, the experienced hydrogeologist provided them the real answer to the question: SAFETY. If you examine the root intent of nearly every responsibility geotechnical engineers and hydrogeologists have, it is to apply our professional skills to ensure the safety of our workforce. When the objective of safety from the geotechnical and hydrogeology disciplines is achieved, inherently accomplishing the mine plan should follow suit, or it should significantly minimize the impact by gravity or groundwater. The objective of a hydrogeologist is to ensure the soil or rock around an open pit or underground mine is dewatered; this specific objective will reduce pore pressures which could lead to a possible ground failure. They ensure a working bench/UG level is dry, so operations are not dealing with adverse conditions while mining. A geotechnical engineer is expected to use all available information and engineering judgement to provide design recommendations, so that the mine will not catastrophically fail. Additionally, they will implement the monitoring systems to identify hazards in advance in the event that the design is flawed and people need to be evacuated. We all know that safety is important to everyone; however, our particular set of technical skills play a significant role in ensuring the safety of a large portion of the global mining workforce."
