Studies have been carried out with the High Pressure Roller Mill, HPRM, to produce calcium carbonate minus 10 micron. This paper presents the optimization of the specific grinding force of the HPRM system for a maximum energy utilization when limestone is ground. In addition, experimental tests of producing carbonate minerals using the HPRM as a pre-crusher are described in this paper.

In recent years, several geotechnical methods have been successfully applied to ash pond closure. These include modified dewatering techniques with wellpoints and wells to physically drain the material, soil mixing to create a soil-concrete material for improved accessways as well as improved ground structures within ponds to act as barriers or gravity dams, and geotechnical instrumentation to serve as an early warning of the potential for liquefaction. Given the parallels between fly ash and sluiced in place mine tailings, the application of fly ash remediation method to mine tailings shows significant potential, as illustrated in this paper.

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a U.S. Department of Energy research and development facility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste. The waste storage horizon is 655 m (2150 ft) below surface in bedded salt. To date the WIPP project has not emplaced any waste. There are three intake shafts used to supply air to the underground. All air is exhausted though a single return shaft. The total design airflow during normal operations is 200 m3/s (424,000 cfm). The ventilation system is designed to provide separate air splits to construction, experimental, and storage activities. Separation is achieved by isolating the storage circuit from the construction or experimental circuits with bulkheads. Any air leakage must be towards the storage area of the facility. Field studies have shown that the pressure differential necessary to maintain the correct leakage direction is susceptible to the effects of natural ventilation; therefore, extensive studies and analyses have been conducted to quantity the natural ventilation effects on the WIPP underground airflow system. A component of this work is a monitoring system designed to measure the air properties necessary for calculation of the natural ventilation pressure (NVP). This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure at strategic locations on surface and underground. The psychrometric parameters of the air are measured every fifteen minutes. From these data, trends can be determined showing the impact of NVP on the ventilation system during diurnal variations in surface climate. Both summer and winter conditions have been studied. To the author's knowledge this is the first reported instance of automatic and continuous production of time and temperature variant NVPs. This paper describes the results of the initial monitoring study. INTRODUCTION The ventilation system at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) in Carlsbad, New Mexico, is designed to perform two distinct functions. First, it supports normal mine ventilation requirements complying with all state and federal mine regulations. Second, the system is designed to prevent an uncontrolled release of radioactive contaminants from the storage and transportation areas of the facility. Although a nuclear radiation release in the facility is considered unlikely, many special features are implemented in the ventilation system to prevent the possible spread of contamination. The facility is constructed with the waste transportation and storage areas separated from the mining and non-radioactive experimental areas. The ventilation system is designed such that air leakage is from the mining and experimental areas to the storage areas. Furthermore, radiation detectors are located throughout the storage and waste transportation areas underground and an exhaust filtration building is installed on surface to prevent the possible release of radiation to the environment. For over two years the underground ventilation system has been rigorously tested and balanced. It was during this period that the adverse effects of NVP were noticed and subsequently quantified. From extensive field studies and computer models, several mitigating features were designed and constructed and special operational procedures were implemented to control the impacts of NVP. To quantify more accurately the NVP at the WIPP, a continuous monitoring system was installed. This monitoring system consists of measuring dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, and barometric pressure every fifteen minutes at strategic locations on surface and underground. From this psychrometric data, the NVP is calculated. Fan operating pressures and flows and strategic differential pressures are recorded from the site Continuous Monitoring System (CMS). The monitoring system provides a means of evaluating how the ventilation system behaves in regard to climatic conditions and to judge the efficacy of the mitigating features and operational procedures. To the author's knowledge, continuous calculation of NVP as a function of time and surface temperature has not been previously reported. Overview of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant The U.S. Department of Energy determined that the plastic nature of bedded salt may provide the best solution to isolate transuranic (TRU) waste from the biosphere. Initial evaluations at the WIPP site began in 1974. In 1979, the United States Congress enacted Public Law 96-164 for the construction and development of the WIPP project. The mission of the WIPP is to demonstrate the safe, long-term disposal of TRU waste generated by the national defense programs of the United States. TRU waste is classified as a low to medium level waste. The waste is stored in drums and does not produce significant heat (not greater than 1 W per drum). The WIPP site is located approximately 47 km (29 miles) east of Carlsbad, New Mexico in the Chihuahuan Desert. The repository is located in the 630 m (2000 ft) thick Salado Formation. This Permian Basin salt deposit is about 225 million years old and appears to have been minimally disturbed by earthquake, faulting, and ground water activity since it was deposited. "Among Tokyo Metro’s approximately 200km of subway lines, the Tozai Line that connects Chiba Prefecture and mid-Tokyo experiences congestion of up to 199% at worst and relief of this has become urgent. Therefore, as it is imperative to increase the number of trains operating in the exceptionally congested area from mid-Tokyo going east, a large-scale renovation work is planned between Iidabashi Station and Kudanshita Station that will facilitate turn-back via 3 tracks. While ensuring the safe and stable operation responsible for about 1.35 million passengers daily, this highly difficult work of inner wall demolition and reinforcement of the side walls and floor slabs will only be implemented for 3 hours during late night. This paper discusses large-scale plans to improve turn-back facilities, and the methods of construction therein as an example of operational improvement of a subway network. 1) INTRODUCTION The Tokyo Metro Tozai Line (“Tozai Line”) opened over the entire 30.8 km distance from Nakano to Nishi-funabashi on March 29, 1969. It has the longest operating length of the nine Tokyo Metro lines, and was the first subway line to extend past the borders of the Tokyo Metropolis. Through train services with two other railway companies are available from the Tozai Line. Tozai Line trains join the Sobu Line of the East Japan Railway Company (“JR East”) and the Toyo Rapid Railway Line of Toyo Rapid Railway (“TR”) from Nishi-funabashi Station, and the JR Chuo Line from Nakano Station. The line is structurally distinctive in that 51% of it was built using the open-cut method, 43% of it is elevated and the remaining 6% was built when we used the shield method for the first time 1)2)3)."

Dense-medium circuits have been installed in many mineral treatment plants since its, original development about thirty years ago. In the intervening, period the process has been thoroughly evaluated and many innovations have been introduced. The Heavy Density. Cyclone is one of the newer systems which has extended the operating range of this process to 65 mesh size. Several different finely divided materials have been used to produce the separating bath but nearly all new plants use a ferro-magnetic medium. The, advantages of magnetic medium include: 1. Smaller recovery plant 2. Lower cost recovery plant both in initial and operating cost 3. Excellent medium stability 4. Dependable medium supply at reasonable and stable cost. Magnetic separators are used to recover this magnetic medium and the smaller plants and lower operating costs are directly related to their use.

As part of a study aimed at understanding the hydrology of in situ leach mining (ISLM), the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Cyprus Casa Grande Corporation and the University of Arizona, is investigating dynamic transmissivity conditions during ISLM of a copper oxide ore deposit. Spatial and temporal variations in ore zone transmissivity during two years of ISLM operations at the Cyprus Casa Grande mine are evaluated during sixteen intervals of steady-state injection and recovery well operation. Direct inversion of an analytical hydrologic model is used to obtain estimates of transmissivity at 58 well locations during these intervals. Univariate statistical and geostatistical methods are used to describe the temporal and/or spatial relationships that exist between transmissivity and other ISLM parameters, including average well injection pressure, average sulfuric acid concentration in leach solution, and the relative configuration of injection and recovery wells. Average transmissivity during the sixteen steady-state time intervals varies between 6.00 x 10-6 m2/min. (6.46 x 10-5 ft2/min.) and 3.61 x 10-8 m2/ min. (3.89 x 10-7 ft2/min.). A trend toward decreas¬ing transmissivity is evident during two year of ISLM operations. This decreasing trend is found to correlate with a decreasing sulfuric acid concentration in injected leach solution, and suggests increasing geochemical precipitation within the deposit. Geostatistical analyses reveal a dynamic and anisotropic transmissivity structure within the target ore zone, that is dependent upon spatial and temporal changes in injection pressure and well configuration.

The McLaughlin Mill started operating in January, 1985. For the first eighteen (18) months start-up, initial operation, and circuit debottlenecking have been done. The mill was designed to recover gold from a refractory ore requiring acid autoclaving pretreatment. This paper discusses the problem associated with bringing this complex hydro-metallurgical plant to consistently achieve design tonnages. Also, briefly described are the mill flowsheet, training program, permitting, and process and project development.

As lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) become more prevalent in the mining industry, new hazards of battery fire and explosion are emerging. Efforts must be taken to ensure that workers are safe from these new hazards, such as batteries undergoing thermal runaway in underground areas that may have explosive methane-air mixtures. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) investigated overpressures generated within a sealed battery enclosure filled with an explosive methane-air mixture and a single cell lithium-ion battery driven into thermal runaway using an accelerating rate calorimeter (ARC). For both iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) lithium-ion cells, the explosion overpressures remained unchanged with varying percentages of methane concentration in the atmosphere surrounding the cell. It’s likely that the gases released from the battery undergoing thermal runaway caused an inert atmosphere within the sealed canister. The results from this study will help mining equipment manufacturers develop proper measures to keep miners safe while working with lithium-ion batteries in underground gassy mines

The function of the mine surveyor is to (a) provide a network of points of accurately known position, covering the entire mine property, (b) obtain the required data for the preparation of useful maps and sections! (c) provide position and directional control for the guidance of the operations, (d) measure the progress of the work, (e) measure the movement of rock masses, and (f) make miscellaneous surveys as needed. Mining properties range from the very small to the extremely large, and from those which involve only surface operations to those involving extensive underground workings. Active mines undergo constant change, necessitating continual updating of the surveys. The differences in the character of the deposits, the scale of mining and the mining methods result in large differences in the surveyor's activities and techniques, but many of the problems involved are common to most mines. The surface work of the mine surveyor is very similar to that, of the plane surveyor in that control points are established by triangulation, trilateration and traversing. Detail is taken by direct measurement, by stadia and by aerial photography. The equipment used, the techniques and the methods of processing the resulting data are likewise very similar. However, the underground work is quite different : A. The lines of sight frequently must be carried through constricted openings, often involving short lines of sight and awkward setups. B. The lighting often is poor, requiring illumination of the backsights and foresights, and the crosshairs. C. The ambient conditions often are difficult, involving falling water, high tem- peratures, poor visibi 'kv and heavy traffic through the area being suneyed. D. The surrounding rock map be unstable, resulting in movement or loss of the surveying stations, as well as hazard to the surveyors. E. The points to be measured often are difficult or impossible to reach. F. Steep vertical sights often are necessary, requiring the use of special equipment. G. Many working levels commonly are involved, requiring the transfer of position and orientation to each with a high level of precision. This section therefore will concentrate on surveying problems peculiar to the mine surveyor, chiefly underground work. 22.1-THE MINE COORDINATE SYSTEM A system of coordinates is essential for all permanent mining operations It is very desirable that all mining operations in a ,given area b~ tied into the same system, as this minimizes problems of boundaries and connections Whenever possible this system should be tied into and made part of the state or regional grid system. It is desirable to orient the coordinate grid on a true-north line and to position the origin of the coordinates so that all of the work will be in the "northeast" quadrant, making the north and east coordinates always positive. This can be done by subtracting suitable constant values from the north and east coordinates of the regional system The residual values are of more convenient magnitude and can be used as the local mine coordinates. The Helvetia copper deposit is a large undeveloped Laramide porphyry copper system located in the Santa Rita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona. This porphyry copper system consists of four areas of copper mineralization: Rosemont, Peach-Elgin, Broadtop Butte, and Copper World. Asarco refers to the four areas collectively as the "Helvetia Deposit". Mineralization and alteration are primarily contact pyrometasomatic, and zoning of hydrothermal alteration and sulfide mineral assemblages are similar to those observed at the Twin Buttes and Mission copper mines located approximately 32 km west of Helvetia. Asarco acquired the Helvetia Deposit in 1988 and has continued the exploration and development effort since then. A considerable amount of excellent geological work has been completed in the area but little information has been published on developments since the mid-1950's. The geology of the deposit as developed by numerous geologists over the past 75 years and the large, bulk tonnage low grade copper deposits outlined in recent years will be briefly reviewed in this paper.

Epidote is a common hydrothermal alteration product in many copper deposits of the southwestern United States. In many of these deposits epidote, along with calcite and chlorite, generally characterize a distal or halo propylitic alteration assemblage, but the mineral can occur within the central potassic alteration zone as well. Epidote is also a common alteration mineral in deposits formed in calcareous host rocks -- the skarn or pyrometasomatic ore bodies. Within the past 15 years, studies of the major and trace element composition of other alteration phases, principally biotite, associated with base metal ore deposits have demonstrated that some hydrothermal alteration minerals are compositional distinct from their igneous or metamorphic counterparts: However, the use of major and minor element content to identify and zero in on mineral¬ized areas does not appear to be very promising. Little work has been published upon the geochemistry of epidote from this standpoint and the results of my work suggest that a similar conclusion can be applied to epidote. My work (Fellows, 1976) suggests that epidote minerals in hydrothermal alteration suites from porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern United States are generally iron-rich rather than aluminum-rich. As a group, these alteration minerals differ compositionally from epidotes of regional metamorphic terrains. I ascribe these differences to the variations in the oxidation character of the respective environments. However, it appears as though the use of major element compositional variations of epidotes as an exploration tool is severely limited. Epidote is a complex calcium-aluminum silicate. "In Antioquia region of Colombia – South America most of extractive activity is developed as artisanal and small-scale level, exploiting different types of minerals resources but predominantly gold. This is not only an ancestral livelihood of hundreds of families in this region, but also their unique way of subsistence. However, that situation has not had a positive effect in the sustainable development of this territory because of several unsustainability factors mainly related to mercury use for gold extraction, the incorrect management of tailings and the informal way in which miners perform their activity. In 2010 Antioquia was the place with the highest contamination by mercury in the world with serious effects in ecosystems and health of habitants of this region (Veiga 2010) This paper presents a Socio-Technical Model focused on strengthening capabilities and social capital of artisanal and small-scale miners and its surrounding communities in Antioquia region. This is based on processes of evaluation, design and implementation of appropriate technologies to obtain “clean minerals” without using mercury and with a right management of tailings. In gold extraction it is about gravitational methods of concentration, which take advantage of high density of this element. These methods not only are cleaner but more profitable for miners. Notwithstanding its technical origins, the current model proposes a holistic framework that manages the elimination of mercury in mining not only as a technology transfer matter. Thus, more than formalization the strengthening process seeks to promote a business vision in miners and to develop productive chains in surrounding communities, this means to improve the skills of artisanal and small-scale miners to organize in a corporative way and to help surrounding communities to provide support and supply services to mining and even to other companies. Besides, the articulation with local institutions drives to reinforce their functions of control and accompaniment. In shorthand, this effort aims to empower local institutions, miners and surrounding communities in such a way they are able to face together their own development challenges in a sustainable way."

INTRODUCTION The mining industry has been under- going a significant restructuring for the past several years. Some firms have been liquidated. Some have been merged with other firms. A number of mining divisions of larger firms have been spun off, in some cases in leveraged buyouts by management. Recently, there have been a number of spin outs of gold subsidiaries. There are also a number of start-up situations where new firms are emerging as significant gold producers through mine development or acquisition. This restructuring has created an attractive market for specialized mining finance firms, and a number of firms have recently entered that field in the United States. These firms provide financial advisory and valuation services to mining firms and project developers, and access to venture capital. In some cases, they invest for clients or for their own account. I have been asked to describe how our firm works, and what kind of information we expect to receive when mine developers seek our assistance in financing a project. HOW WE OPERATE Denver Mining Finance works for both mine developers and investors. We also provide expert advice on mining issues to governments and to firms who are in litigation over mining issues. A lot of our work involves valuing mineral interests for various purposes. Our principal expertise is in the technical, commercial, and financial area. We help put mining deals into shape commercially so that they can be financed, and we help investors get into mining deals that are commercially sound. We work on projects, but we also advise mining firms on the structure of their business and how to make the most out of one or several mines that they might own. In addition to our work for clients, we are also prepared to invest in mining projects for our own account, and to recommend gold properties for acquisition by our parent company, Royal Gold, Inc. We are, to some extent, a venture capital firm, in that we sometimes work with projects that are not "bankablerV1 and are prepared to invest in attractive early-stage situations in mining. However, I want to emphasize that our principal focus is on development of commercially attractive mining projects that can be brought into production in the best possible financial terms. If we can make a project qualify for a project loan from a commercial bank, we will not advise the developer to use high cost venture capital. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus primarily upon our functions with respect to development of precious metal projects. In a typical case, a firm with an advanced-staged project approaches us for help with financing the final feasibility study, and construction and operation of a mine. In some cases, the developer has already developed a financing plan and wants only our access to investors. If we agree that the project is sound and that the financing scheme will be attractive to investors, we will help the developer reach investors on a commission basis. In such cases, we are particularly insistent that the financing plan and our participation meet all regulatory requirements, particularly compliance with state and federal securities laws. In most cases, however, the developer asks us for advise both on how to structure the financing, and how it can be implemented. Here we work for fees based on hourly rates for advisory work,

It has been accepted almost as dogma that sampling contributes most of the error to fluctuations in gold fire assays. Differences in assay results on pulp material from the same sample interval are frequently regarded as evidence of the presence of the so called "nugget effect" or relatively coarse gold particles. It is true that if coarse gold particles are present they contribute to substantial sampling fluctuations, but while the process of sampling is probably the major source, the analytical process cannot -be completely ignored as a possible contributor to erratic assay results. In order to maintain a stable assay process, the analytic part of the system must be kept in control as well as the sampling and preparation part. One way of monitoring the performance of the analytic system is to systematically assay standard material whose sampling characteristics are carefully controlled. Gold assay standards are not prepared nor can they be prepared to account for both sampling and analytical errors. It is not possible to send coarse material to a lab for preparation (which includes both the processes of comminution and splitting) followed by fire assay, to make inferences only about the fire assay process. Because most gold ores are very heterogeneous, sampling errors would in most cases completely mask the contribution of the analytical errors. Assay standard material is prepared only to assess the accuracy and variability in the fire assay process.

As the importance of particle shape in mineral processing is increasingly recognized as an major variable in predicting the behavior of both individual particles and particle systems, whether it be in dense media, froth flotation, comminution or the flow of particles, new method of shape characterization are being developed, particularly for use on image analyzers. These shape characterization methods may be broadly classified into the analytical, empirical and physical formation methods. Discussed are approaches and the strengths and weakness of each of these methods. Moreover old and new shape measuring techniques are reviewed, particularly the new image analysis methods techniques such as Fourier, Haar, Fractal, Walsh and Delta as well as a variety of other techniques such as tabling, the Cascadograph, settling and L/D ratios. Also discussed are the problems of doing shape research, current progress and the future of the field.

Mining engineers in charge of open pit mine planning very often face decision making situations dealing with the selection of the most economical method for the removal of overburden. Ripping versus conventional drilling and blasting are the options considered. The choice of a particular overburden removal method depends upon the physic-mechanical properties of the overburden material as well as the various cost factors involved in the process. The analysis of techno-economical factors involved in different methods of overburden removal needs detailed study and investigation by a technical expert. But the expert system "Fragmentation System Design" has been created in a way such that it will help and expedite the decision making process relating to overburden removal in surface mines. Furthermore, this expert system can be used for detailed design aspects of overburden removal in open pit mines.

Many cases of derailments, train accidents and traffic interruptions due to the slope failure and rockfall have been reported in the past on Konkan Railway trackline because of unstable rock slopes. The authorities installed stability enhancement measures such as wire netting, rock bolting and shotcreting which were found insufficient. The failed geotechnical measures prompted authorities to excavate the unstable slopes. Rock blasting is generally not preferred for the excavation of slopes along the transportation route. Stabilisation and widening of slopes by blasting need closure of the route for a considerable time. Discontinuing traffic on Konkan Railway route was undesirable as it connects two important port cities Mumbai and Mangalore. The paper presents an innovative directional controlled blasting (DCB) technique for excavating three unstable slopes (i.e. cuttings) in hilly terrain without disturbing the traffic. New empirical formulae for small geometry blasting to estimate burden and throw have been developed. A unique sequence of firing and excavation with powder factor varying between 0.04 and 0.39 kg/m3 irrespective of the actual free face was used for rock blasting. The process controlled the throw of blasted material over the track and resulted in a smooth and stable wall. The slope angle has been changed from 80 to 82° to 45–47° and probability of wedge, planar and toppling failures was eliminated. About 100 such accident-prone slopes (52 km cumulative length, 7% of total route) situated at discrete locations along Konkan Railway route were stabilised using the technique. No incident of rockfall and slope failures along these slopes has been observed after the stabilisation.

The Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes of the Wind River Indian Reservation, Wyoming are interested in developing their industrial mineral resources. The U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Division of Energy and Mineral Resources (DEMR) is assisting the tribes in evaluating the potential of their industrial mineral prospects for development. Gypsum occurs on both sides of the Owl Creek Mountains in the basal portion of the Jurassic Gypsum Springs Formation. The gypsum resources that are being evaluated crop out along the northern flank of the Owl Creek Mountains in the Sweetwater basin, a small topographic sub-basin of the Big Horn Basin. From October 1998, to April 1999, DEMR personnel mapped, sampled, and drilled the southcentral butte within the Sweetwater basin. Samples were analyzed for free and combined water, and major mineral oxides to determine gypsum purity. Gypsum purity averaged 93.6 percent for surface samples and 95.1 percent for drill core samples. The basal portion of the Gypsum Springs Formation is comprised of several beds of gypsum up to 9 feet (2.7 m) thick separated by 0.5 to 2.0 foot (0.15 to 0.61 m) thick lenses of siltstone and limestone. Overall gypsum in the formation ranges from 35 to 90 feet (11 to 27 m) in thickness. A resource of approximately 7 million short tons (st) (6.4 million metric tons [mt]) has been identified.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) held a one-day workshop at its Denver, CO facility to inform the public of the status of its National Mapping Program. In addition, the agency wanted to obtain information from topographic map users on what their needs are. The agency wants to know what the topographic map user wants. The USGS faces the challenge of keeping up with the changing needs of the nation. In the last few years, the agency has changed dramatically to meet these needs. For example, the "new" USGS incorporates mineral-information specialists from the former US Bureau of Mines and also uses the expertise of former National Biological Service employees. These areas complement the agency's traditional strengths in mapping, geology and water re- sources. The stated mission of the USGS's National Mapping Division is to "meet the nation's need for basic geospatial data, ensuring access to and advancing the application of these data and other related ears science information f& users worldwide." To accomplish this goal, the USGS publishes topographic maps, including shaded-relief editions of areas of special interest (state maps and national parks); photo image maps; satellite image maps; geologic maps and hydrologic maps. The geologic maps include geologic quadrangle maps, oil and gas investigation maps and charts, and coal investigations maps. The familiar 7.5-minute series topographic maps are the most widely used. The 7.5-minute- (1:24,000-scale-) format mapping was begun in 1935.
