"Proper soil conditioning is critical for effective earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM tunneling. Chamber pressures can reach 3-5 bar yet the vast majority of testing is performed under atmospheric conditions. This paper illustrates how pressure influences foam stability and conditioned soil behavior, and how atmospheric test results must be viewed in the context of expected chamber pressures. Torsional shear strength, compressibility and abrasivity of foam conditioned sand were found to be ideal when the void ratio was above the ASTM-determined maximum void ratio, achieved by sufficiently expanding the soil grain structure with foam, herein when the foam injection ratio at pressure exceeded 45%. Otherwise, the engineering properties of foam conditioned sand were not ideal, i.e., appreciable torque and abrasivity, low compressibility. INTRODUCTION Proper soil conditioning is critical for effective earth pressure balance (EPB) TBM tunneling. The formation soil at the cutterhead must be transformed into a highly compressible, low shear strength and low permeability medium within the excavation chamber to allow effective EPB performance. This behavior must be maintained for a certain residency time while the soil is in the chamber and screw conveyor. The vast majority of published studies on conditioned soil behavior have been performed under atmospheric conditions (Quebaud et al., 1998; Bezuijen et al., 1999; Psomas and Houlsby, 2002; Vinai et al. 2008; Thewes et al., 2012; Peila, 2014); however, the desired soil behavior must occur under chamber pressures that can reach 5-7 bar. The influence of pressure on conditioned soil is significant and is dramatically different than behavior under atmospheric pressure (Williamson et al., 1999; Mori et al., 2015). This paper illustrates how pressure influences conditioned soil behavior and how atmospheric test results must be viewed in the context of expected chamber pressures. The influence of pressure on foam bubble size (including with time) is shown through digital image analysis. The influence of pressure on foam half-life is also investigated. The compressibility, shear strength, and abrasivity of conditioned soil under pressure is presented and explained in terms of density, soil and air compressibility and porosity."

A computational procedure has been developed to determine the lung volume function for the upper airways of the human respiratory system. This analytical procedure computes a person's partial lung volume from an experimental two-microphone acoustic measurement of the upper airway passages obtained through a molded tubular mouthpiece. The theoretical transfer function for the two microphone signals as well as the related acoustic impedance and reflection coefficient for the upper airways are calculated using two-channel spectrum analysis techniques. An inverse spectrum analysis scheme then converts the reflection coefficient to an impulse response from which the airway area function is extracted using an area recovery algorithm. Numerical integration of the upper airway area function yields the lung volume function for the upper airways of the human respiratory sysytem. A software program to accomplish this computation of human upper airway volumes will be described in this paper. Application of this computational procedure to the measured tracheal acoustic impedances of 15 human subjects will illustrate the program's capability toward early detection of lung dysfunction using a prototype clinical facility.

Booster fans have been in regular use in British coal mines since the first half of this century, but a large increase in their use did not take place until after the Nationalization of coal mines in 1947. From that time the need was identified to improve standards of ventilation in general and mining engineers specializing in ventilation were appointed at all levels in the mining industry. A comprehensive approach to ventilation surveys and planning, together with the realisation of the benefits of booster fans, led to their more rapid introduction. Many coal mines in the U.K. are at moderate depth and have virgin strata temperatures of 30°C or less. The ability to control climatic conditions by increased ventilation rather than resort to cooling systems has led to the introduction of booster fans and recirculation systems in these mines. Large makes of methane and high levels of coal dust production due to increased mechanization have also required enhanced ventilation standards. This paper deals with the reasons for selecting booster fans and the specific safety considerations involved in their use. Numbers, types and sizes of booster fans in the U.K. are outlined, together with notes on installation and performance. Remote monitoring and control from the surface is dealt with, and current legislation. The evolution of controlled recirculation is also covered starting with auxiliary fan systems in 1970 and leading to very large district schemes in the late 1980s. The research at Newcastle upon Tyne University and other establishments in the climatic conditions associated with recirculation is summarised and its use in assisting existing and proposed conventional and recirculation systems is indicated.

During the past decade, researchers at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University have worked to develop a novel flotation process for treating very fine particles. This process, which is now commonly known as [microbubble column flotation] (MCF), has been shown to be very effective in a number of applications related to fine coal processing. These applications include the retrofit of existing preparation plant circuits and the recovery of additional coal fines from refuse streams. In addition, work conducted under the sponsorship of the United States Department of Energy indicates that the MCF process is capable of producing superclean and ultraclean coals from many eastern U.S. coals. This paper describes some of the basic problems associated with fine particle flotation and the design and operational features of the MCF process used to minimize these problems. Also presented are the results of ongoing pilot- and field-testing programs.

In the short time I have now I'll be able to give you a precursory look at gainsharing and some brief ideas on where to look to improve your current plans. Successful soil construction involves prepa¬ration of an adequate base, selection of high quality soil ma¬terials, and placement of those materials by means which will establish a continuous macropore network and modest to low soil strength. Where such has been accomplished, experi¬ments reveal row crop productivity on reclaimed land which is very competitive with that on undisturbed land. Inferior productivity and sensitivity to drought stress are experienced where the soils are excessively compacted during construc¬tion. Some deep tillage practices have been quite successful in improving the compacted soils, but it is preferable to avoid compaction as the soil materials are handled.

Lithium requirements in the next few decades for batteries and controlled thermonuclear fusion reactors (CTR) may exceed the availability of the current mineral and brine reserves. It is thus prudent to search for new reserves and resources to satisfy these and future lithium applications. The lithium content of the waters from the Smackover oil field. located in the Gulf Coast region of the United States, ranges from 100 to 500 mp/l and could represent a substantial new reserve. Experimental evidence described in the literature indicates that a specific chelating agent dipivaloylmethane (DPM), of the diketone type, has a specific selectivity toward lithium in the presence of other metal ions in aqueous solutions. Based in part on this unique property of dipivaloylmethane, a conceptual design of a full-size plant to extract lithium from the Smackover brine is presented in this paper. This study includes alternate flow-sheet development, design information on the major units of the process, energy requirements, and an economic analysis of a facility capable of producing 106 kg of lithium per year. The economics of three different process concepts depend primarily on the amount of water needing to be evaporated from the initial oil-field feed waters in concentrating the brine. The results, as a function of production rates, are indicated only in a general manner.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1. Introduction A longwall operator can make few changes to increase output, significantly reduce respirable dust, and decrease power consumption. Reducing drum speed, and thereby cutting with increased pick penetration, is one. This article defines the benefits of deep cutting in terms of reduced dust production and power consumption. It also identifies the practical aspects of high pick penetration in terms of shearer performance and coal loading. Before examining some practical aspects of reducing drum speed and looking at the theoretical background, it is worthwhile to summarize what is meant by high penetration and deep cutting, and what potential benefits and pitfalls may be expected. Deep cutting (in the sense of high penetration rather than wide web) can be defined in one or more of the following ways: • Cutting with an average pick penetration distance higher than that used in the past. • Cutting with a pick penetration higher than the longwall operator would have used if the advantages of deep and slow cutting were not considered. • Cutting with a well-designed shearer drum below 40 rpm. All these definitions are slightly arbitrary. They are given to provide a basis for discussion and to make the point that any move towards deeper, more efficient cutting can result in operational benefits. The benefits of deep cutting appear in many different areas. The most noticeable benefit, provided suitable instruments are available, is the reduction of airborne respirable dust. During an experiment on a longwall in the Pittsburgh seam, a nearly four to one reduction in dust levels was seen when drum speed was halved. Not all studies have shown such a big reduction, but it seems that some benefit is almost always obtained when drum speed is reduced. Production rate and specific power consumption are also affected (in a positive sense) by reducing drum speed or increasing pick penetration. Although these changes may not be as spectacular as those in dust level, they contribute to the economic return of the longwall operation. Similarly, improved washability through fines reduction may have a beneficial economic effect. Cutting with shearer drums operating at lower speeds does have some possible deleterious impacts that an operator should be aware of. For example, cutting reactions - loads imposed on the picks by the coal being cut - will be increased as a deeper cut is used. Steps must, therefore, be taken to ensure the stability of the shearer and provide an adequate haulage effort. These increased cutting reactions also result in higher loads on the power transmission system (gearboxes, ranging arms, pick boxes, etc.) from the shearer motor(s) to the pick tip. These higher loads must be anticipated and provided for with the necessary hardware. In particular, extra haulage power must be provided with low drum speeds, since haulage effort required increases roughly in proportion with pick penetration. Because the drum will be rotating more slowly or will have fewer picks, the load on shearer components will also be more variable. If suitable, robust equipment is not used, this increased vibration will decrease reliability. Benefits of Deep Cutting Lower dust levels, decreased specific power consumption, and improved product washability are the most noticeable benefits of reduced drum speeds. Although the benefits will vary greatly with mining conditions and the type of coal, some examples of what can be expected are described below. Reduced Dust Levels Figure 1 shows principal results of a study on the effects of reduced drum speed conducted on a longwall in the Pittsburgh seam (Ludlow, 1981). This figure shows that average dust production was reduced by about 70% when drum speed was halved. By making some assumptions about such quantities as coal density, it is possible to apply this proportional reduction to the quantity of respirable dust liberated per ton of coal mined. When this is done, two kinds of results are obtained: • At 70 rpm, about 1 g (15 gr) of airborne respirable dust is created for every ton mined (roughly one part per million). At 35 rpm, only 0.28-0.37 g/t (3.9-5.1 gr per st) of coal mined become airborne respirable dust. • At 35 rpm, nearly four times the amount of coal may be mined before the compliance level is exceeded, compared with 70 rpm.

The Minera Ojos Del Salado (?MINOSAL?) concentrator is located 20 kilometers southeast of Copiapo, Chile and processes copper ore provided by its Santos and Resguardo mines at a capacity of 4,200 tip (4,620 stpd). Phelps Dodge acquired the majority interest in MINOSAL in 1982. The principal incentive for this purchase was the exploration potential of the property. At that time, the concentrator plant was a small, antiquated installation with a capacity of 674 t/d (740 stpd). In 1982, the majority of the ore was produced from the Santos and Resguardo mines, but custom ores of copper, silver, and gold were also treated. The acquisition occurred at a crucial time in the copper business, since the price had fallen to nearly $0.50 per pound. In 1985, Phelps Dodge purchased the outstanding interest in MINOSAL and acquired 100% of the property. Today, after numerous improvements and two expansion projects, the concentrator is an interesting combination of old and new equipment. The regrind mills, for example, have been in service for about 50 years, while the ceramic concentrate filter represents the latest technology.

Abundant beach and offshore resources of gold deposits are demonstrated along the coast of Alaska, and Nome is one of the richest places. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were collected and stored in geodatabase of ArcGIS. In searching for the best model for the interpretation of the Nome offshore gold placer deposit and accurate estimation of the reserve, the data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS. The gold concentration data collected from the Nome offshore deposit are of characteristics such that: (1) near lognormal distribution of data, (2) high positive skewed distribution, (3) a small number of extreme values dominating the reserve estimation, and (4) apparent anisotropy of the variogram. These characteristics make the development of an interpolation model for the gold deposit a challenging task. In this study, it is determined that five geostatistical methods provided by ArcGIS with visualization capability, i.e., Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Ordinary Kriging with lognormal transformation (OK-log), Simple Kriging (SK) and Indicator Kriging (IK) are suitable candidates for the development of an interpolation model. The five algorithms are evaluated and compared with each other in the study. Cross-validation technique is employed to examine the accuracy of the five approaches. It is determined that the OK and SK algorithms are not suitable for this dataset because of the difficulty of fitting the semivariogram model despite their lower RMSE (Root-mean-square error) and the higher RMSS (Root-mean-square Standardized). The OK-log algorithm does not provide satisfactory prediction either, because it places too much weight on the role of extreme values resulting in overestimation and extremely high RMSE. Reserve estimation of each blocks is conducted using each of the interpolation methods and compared with the reserve calculated using the conventional polygon method. The IWD and IK algorithm seem to provide estimations more agreeable with the conventional polygon method.

The authors present a new mineral price model, compare it with time series and naive models, and analyze the effects of the forecasting models on mineral project evaluation. Mineral commodity prices are volatile, which means that the results of evaluation tools that do not treat the stochasticity of metal prices rigorously may be misleading. But, in mine valuation, commodity price forecasts are required to assess the economic viability of a project. In this study, a new mineral forecasting method, called the MNDRVG-MFNN-RM model, which incorporates randomness, neural networks and regression models, is introduced. The MNDRVG-MFNN-RM model, a naive method and time series model were used to forecast gold prices for two successive years for the evaluation of a proposed open-pit mine. The MNDRVG-MFNN-RM model yielded the best results among the three methods. It produced the true optimum pit limits and an optimum pit value slightly less than the true optimum value. The main novelty of the methodology is the simulation and rigorous analysis of the randomness property associated with mineral prices to reduce the estimation and forecast errors, an important contribution to mineral venture evaluation, mine planning and design.

Ferromanganese slag, a product of the manganese industry, was characterized mineralogically. The slag, which contains high Mn values, was characterized using optical microscopy, XRD analysis and electron microscopy. No separate Mn-bearing oxide mineral phase was found. The slag is amorphous, and no crystalline phase was identified in the hulk sample by XRD, However, in. fine fractions, quartz was identified. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of Mn, Si, Al and Ca in the matrix without the development of a mineral phase. Leaching experiments using H2SO4 were carried out to determine if Mn could be extracted from the slag. At room temperature, almost 100% of the manganese could be dissolved at a solid-liquid ratio o f 1:10 by leaching with dilute sulfuric acid. The impurities could be precipitated by pH adjustment to produce a manganese sulfate solution suitable for the production of MnO2 or electrolytic Mn metal. Based on the laboratory-scale experiments, a suitable process is proposed to recover manganese values from the, ferromanganese slag.

This is presentation of a model which simplifies application of project management in control of the construction procedure of industrial units (mines, power stations etc). The model is made for further referrence of investors. The most demanding problem in large units is to find the best way of locating all activities within a network. The model uses term "line" (which refers to a construction unit) for a serie of activities which are to be sequentially executed (up to 1000 lines, each with 10-20 activities). The lines are coded in advance. Each line is described by a competent expert. Team of experts provide liason between lines on the basis of computer drawings. The method proved to be extremely effective. In order to provide smooth monitoring at all management levels, graphic documentation is given at 4 levels. The initial level is the third one, made based on input data (more than lo listings per one drawing). By condensation of activities along one line, another level is obtainable. Grouping of lines gives the first level (1-2 listing) for the highest management level. More detailed information is given for a limited (shorter) period at the forth level for the purposes of operational management. Each activity has three phases: prior to contracting, post contracting and accomplishment. All phases are presented at all levels, which enables investor to be continually well informed about construction advancement. Model is written in FORTRAN language. Programs comprise: maintenance of data base, calculation of time and costs and elaboration of graphic and other documentation.

In December 2013, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) completed the widening of the eastbound tunnel on Interstate 70 (I-70) from two lanes to three. Work on the westbound tunnel began earlier this year and is scheduled for completion in December. The Twin Tunnels project is located in the mountains about 55 km (35 miles) west of Denver. They were bored during the 1960s when I-70 was being built and became the main access to Colorado?s growing number of ski areas and the state?s Western Slope. Throughout the decades following their construction, traffic on I-70 continued to increase and now the tunnels have a major bottleneck. Com-mutes to and from the mountain resorts, particularly on weekends, have become long and slow. Adding a third lane through the tunnels will help alleviate the congestion. (A complete report on the project can be found in T&UC, December 2013, page 61.) Once the eastbound tunnel was completed late last year, CDOT authorized the funding to begin work on the westbound side. That made economic sense, as the equipment used on the eastbound tunnel needed to only be shifted across I-70 to begin work on the westbound side, rather than removing it in December and bringing it back in March when construction began on the westbound tunnel. Work on the westbound tunnel uses essentially the methods that were used on the eastbound tunnel ? removal of the existing concrete lining and using drill-and-blast methods for tunneling widening. The main difference between the two tunnels is that the westbound side requires more blasting on both ends to widen I-70 to three lanes.

The application of automatic control to mineral processing operations has been gaining momentum during recent years. Many strategies are being developed for controlling crushing, grinding and flotation circuits, however, their implementation in industrial plants is being slowed down because of the costs and difficulties in evaluating these strategies in a systematic manner. An interactive computer simulation package, developed at the University of California, provides the capability of analyzing the process dynamics of mineral processing circuits. This paper presents an overview of the simulator and its application to the case studies of grinding and flotation.

Nautilus Minerals was listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange in May 2006. The company now has major mining companies Anglo America (5.7%), Teck Cominco (7.2%) and Epion Holdings (22.4%) as significant shareholders, and has raised approximately $US346 million dollars to develop the world's first deep-water mine. The company is currently targeting high-grade copper and gold in seafloor massive sulphide mineralization, located near plate boundaries in back-arch basins of the Western Pacific. The first mine scheduled to be developed by the company is located in 1,600 meters of water at Solwara 1, in the relatively quite waters of the Bismarck Sea approximately 50 km from the port of Rabaul, within the Territorial Waters of Papua New Guinea. During 2006 and 2007 the company completed detailed environmental and geological studies, culminating in a number of world firsts, including the world?s first NI 43-101 compliant resource statement and environmental impact study for a seafloor massive sulphide system. Permitting is well advanced for the project, with initial production scheduled for late 2010, subject to timely grant of the permits. Extensive government and stakeholder liaison and engagement has been undertaken throughout the projects life, and is a core feature of Nautilus' desire to "do it right" in all aspects of this new industry.

The United States continues to be the world’s leading producer and consumer of diatomite. Production of diatomite in the United States during 2005 was estimated to be 653 kt (720,000 st). This was a 5-percent increase compared with 2004. The value of processed diatomite in the U.S. was about $179 million in 2005. Production was from six companies with 12 processing facilities in four states. California and Nevada were the principal producing states. They accounted for about 70 percent of U.S. production in 2005. U.S. diatomite exports were about 144 kt (159,000 st). Imports were negligible. The internal structure and chemical inertness make diatomite an excellent raw material for filtration, absorbent and filler applications. Filtration, especially the purification of beer, liquors and wine and the cleansing of greases and oils, continued to be the largest end use for diatomite. Other applications include the removal of microbial contaminants, such as bacteria, protozoa and viruses in public water systems, and the filtration of human blood plasma. The use of diatomite as fillers and in pharmaceutical applications, including the filtration of human blood plasma, continues to increase as has its use as an insecticide base and as pozzolan. The relative rank of end uses of diatomite were filter aids, 75 percent; fillers, 11 percent; absorbents, 7 percent and other (mostly cement manufacture), 7 percent.

This paper shows how the efficiencies of size-reduction processes depend on the mode of particle constraint and energy transfer within the comminution device: namely, whether the process consists of single-particle loading, confined-particle-bed comminution or loose- (unconstrained-) particle grinding. The relative efficiency of single-particle comminution, ball-mill grinding and particle-bed comminution in the recently invented high-pressure roll mill is evaluated by making use of the self-preserving nature of the size distributions of comminuted products. The highest energy efficiency can be achieved by utilizing a hybrid two-stage system in which the material is first ground in the high-pressure roll mill and then the ball mill.

University of Idaho scientists research under U.S. Bureau of Mines Cooperative Agreement C0278001 constitutes a complex hydrogeological, hydrochemical and metallurgical mine waste management project at an existing Superfund site. Technologies that may prove useful for the extraction of dissolved metals from acid mine water and solid wastes include lixiviation and biosorption. Acid mine water is the major, long-term problem in the valley. We are attempting to delineate the major sources of ground water recharge which feed the acid mine drainage and their hydraulic properties.
