A geomechanical rock mass classification or RMR is currently being used for the evaluation of an LHD mechanized mining system versus the conventional block caving method. The successes and failures of a Panel lS-19 LHD test block on the 2315 level can be attributed to the geologic and geomechanical zonation present. Trench blasting, caving procedures, and sequencing are other factors that were also considered. Lessons learned from the P.lS-19 test block have been used to alter the design for future LHD production blocks on the 2615 level. These modifications are designed to maximize the pillar and insure an adequate draw connection.

The use of stone in building construction predates written history. From the time that stone was first used, builders have constructed stone buildings predominately from local or regional materials. However, since World War II, the stone business has become increasingly global. For example, French limestone is now sold to builders in the United States, and American granite is shipped to Japan. The internationalization of architectural and construction firms has encouraged this trend. Differences among nations in trade practices, environmental demands and the level of knowledge of dimension-stone characteristics make international trading in stone a risky and potentially disastrous business for unwary participants.

Data is now appearing in literature that indicates many current paste fill systems in Canada suffer from plugged lines and severe wear rates. Both of these conditions suggest: design problems with the pipe distribution system, backfill composed of poorly graded material and/or possibly poor operator practices. Problems that can be prevented in the design stage, but still may be readily solvable with current technology. However, if left untreated will lead to an increasing frequency of down time. The compatibility of the distribution system with the paste fill rheology is fundamental and essential for the reliable delivery of fill. Either many mine operators are not familiar enough with the technology to provide a critical review that could foresee problems down the road, prior to construction and or North American designers are not clarifying their designs to their customers. The objective of this paper is to highlight key concepts to mine operators with the purpose of better enabling a critical review of contractor's/consultant's designs. There is a great deal of understanding about the rheology of backfill over a range of pulp densities from hydraulic slurry to dense to paste. However, outside of deep mines (especially in South Africa) neither hydraulic or dense fill distribution systems have suffered the problems of paste fill. Paste fill is fundamentally different from hydraulic fill principally in its transportation characteristics. These differences have a direct impact on the design of the distribution system. By understanding the practical implications of these differences the operator can play a more active role in their design while better appreciating how to best operate their own system.

The nonlinear network optimization algorithm developed in this paper solves the following mine ventilation design problem: find the location and size of all fans and regulators which minimize the overall system power consumption while satisfying all physical, legal, and operational constraints. This work includes the formulation of the problem within the framework of mathematical optimization, the development of the computational theory, and the creation of an efficient solution methodology. The algorithm has been implemented on a microcomputer, and a small but representative example is included. The algorithm presented in this paper has four limitations. First, the optimization process is for a single point in time: the dynamic nature of a mine ventilation system in an evolving mine is not directly addressed. Second, the topology of the ventilation network is required input information. The mathematical algorithm does not optimize the size or location of the mine ventilation airways; however, the post optimality analysis techniques can be used to aid in topological decisions. Third, the problem is formulated using volumetric flow; thus, heat and moisture transfer are ignored. Fourth, the capital cost of ventilation equipment is not included in the formulation.

A new sanitary sewer was installed in Pleasant Hill, California using microtunnelling methods. The project consisted of 693 meters of 1372 mm and 1981 mm concrete pipe. A Herrenknecht AVN 1200 was used to install the nominal 1372 mm pipe in three drives. The machine was then fitted with an oversized shield used to install the large diameter pipeline. This articulated shield allowed the excavation of a 2362 mm diameter hole with a 1524 mm machine-- a technique new to North America. This paper reviews the design considerations for the articulated shield and reports on the project challenges and solutions to overcome these challenges.

Research in the 1990's for sulfide collectors will need to focus not on the development of new chemical species but on the application of the new technologies that have already been developed.

From concrete in the driveway to aspirins in the medicine cabinet, minerals, especially industrial minerals, play a major role in day to day living. For a better appreciation of this let's look into the a day of the life of a fellow named John, and see how much we depend on industrial minerals. The sounds of soft violins nudged John from his sleep. The melodic sounds of Beethoven's Pastoral coming from his radio alarm clock brought him out of his dreams. He reached for the reading light switch, then checked his watch--6:30 a.m., and another day of work. As he got up, the darkness outside reminding him of winter coincided with the soft voice of the all night disk jockey forecasting the fall of four inches of snow. Warm beads of water beating on his face removed all remnants of sleep and, like a stimulant, the morning shower brought thoughts of yesterday and plans for a new day. These carried over as he looked himself in the mirror while shaving and brushing his teeth.

During World War II mining machinery manufacturers were limited in the development of their product improvement programs. Following the war, however, the ideas and intentions of both the users and manufacturers of mining equipment became evident. The Coal Industry launched a series of events which indicated their determination to rise to the economic challenge of developing profitable machines which would eliminate the out-dated and back-breaking methods of mining previously used. Two major technological advances were developed as a result of the ambitious goals forecast by the Coal Industry: 1. Coal mining was going "off-track" and concentrated mining operations were to follow in rapid succession. 2. Carbide tools provided the remaining missing contribution to another technological breakthrough....Continuous Mining. Little did the inventors realize the significance of the misnomer they created because twenty-five years later the industry is still striving to secure the results implied by the meaning of the word...."Continuous". Nevertheless, all major manufacturers embarked on programs in an attempt to compete for recognition in this new mechanized-mining endeavor Eventually in 1950 there were three types of boring machines and two types of ripping machines being manufactured. Mining Speed was the desired goal.

The mine fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area resulted -in the control of the mine fire.

Mountain Pass, California is located 96 km southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada, and has an exposed surface orebody within view of Interstate Highway 15. Mineral prospecting in this region dates back to about 1860 followed by the discovery and subsequent mining (1870-1895) of silver bearing veins on the north slope of nearby Clark Mountain. In contrast to the four lane divided interstate highway of today, all supplies needed for mining during this early history were transported by wagons from San Bernardino which is 320 km west. Many small lead mines were active in the area during 1917-20, and a small gold mine operated in 1941-42 within 100 m of the orebody presently being worked. In 1949 two prospectors searching for uranium with a Geiger counter discovered a radioactive vein outcrop at Mountain Pass. Further investigation revealed the presence of a large amount of a light-brown, heavy mineral to a depth of about 2 m. A sample of this unidentified mineral was submitted to the Boulder City, Nevada, U.S. Bureau of Mines where a spectroscope examination shoved high level rare earth oxides, carbon dioxide, and fluorine. These results indicated the mineral was bastnasite.

In today's work environment a tremendous amount of data is required to provide the regulatory agencies justification to issue a mining permit. The demands for data, specifically environmental characterization data, grow and the mine plans must address the issues raised by the interpretation of that data. Computers and computer software can provide operators and consultants with the tools necessary to assimilate, digest and interpret these seemingly unmanageable data sets. This paper presents some examples of how Mincom's MineScape software can be applied to the task of developing coal mine permits in an electronic format.

The directions for ventilation control are often given in linguistic styles such as "if the airflow rate measured is small, a high value of rotation on a local fan should be chosen." In order to control the underground climate using a computer instead of a human being, both the reliability of data values measured underground and the application of human recognition of data values are required. The efficiency of data transmission is dependent on a method of checking a signal which is changed by mixing noises resulting from cases of electrical and mechanical damage to cables. In the study, fuzzy reasoning is adopted to choose a checking method for underground conditions from a normally operating state to an emergency. Fuzzy reasoning is applied to control airflow rate under the linguistic control rules given. It is shown that an effective series of linguistic control rules derived by fuzzy-sets theory is available in ventilation control when used in conjunction with an air velocity sensor, a computer and a local fan with thyristor control. Moreover, a system to make an optimum series of linguistic control rules for ventilation control is introduced.

INTRODUCTION One of the main problems in tunneling without the use of explosives lies in the development of tools which, at an economically acceptable level, are capable of continuous breakage of the rock, resulting in a fragmentation suitable for a smooth, uninterrupted transportation of the muck away from the tunnel face. Tools employed on tunneling machines have, so far, always been of the mechanical kind which break up the rock by a crushing and shearing action. Other methods of rock breaking are possible but, even if some of them have reached the laboratory testing stage, nearly all of them are still too "exotic" to be of any practical use in the immediate future. One must admit, however, that some highly interesting results are beginning to be reported from the USA on the use of high pressure water jets for the destruction of rock through erosion, a field pioneered in Europe(USSR and Great Britain). Mechanical breakage of the rock is effected by inducing stresses exceeding its compressive/shear strength, by loading it with a wedge of cone shaped tool, until cracks are formed and chips loosened. In order to allow the tools to act upon the rock face continuously, they are commonly shaped as rotating bodies, "roller bits" or "disc cutters", spinning freely and mounted on a revolving boring head of tunnel diameter. The thrust of the tools against the face is generally exerted in a direction which is parallel to the tunnel axis.

According to the increasing importance of boom type roadheaders in tunnelling essential problems occuring in the application of these machines are dealt with. Based on a chart including the various stages for decicion finding the excavation method of underground cavities, both the technical limits and economic criteria are discussed in order to determine the range of applicability of roadheaders. Giving examples-the numerous developments in the fields of pick and cutting technology, performance data of boom type roadheaders in hard rock, safety technology and increase in the machines' degree of utilization, research and development of VA is illustrated. Two topic operation examples show partial aspects of the various tendencies of development.

Acquisition of coherent and representative data about the state of processes remains a major problem of process control. This paper proposes an approach that ensures coherence in measurements on an operational industrial process. The basic technique employed relies on balance equilibration of resource mass flow. An interesting particularity of the set up is the ease with which it can be adapted to check productivity or detect sensor failures. In the case of sensor failure, it suffices to examine the evaluations before and after balance equilibration. The algorithm was tested by means of computer simulation using data from an industrial metallurgical flowsheet.

Thunder Basin Coal Company has two mines located in the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. 60-90 km southeast of Gillette, Wyoming. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960's. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping, but environmental considerations during the mid-1970's made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lying with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age and the deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21 m thick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. Investment in the mining industry has increased substantially throughout the world in recent years. So have acquisitions, divestitures, and financial restructurings. The return of outside investors to the industry is welcomed. The trend toward stockholder litigation is not so welcomed. Both have provided the impetus for commissioning outside professional due diligence studies of potential minerals transactions. For a number of reasons, some unique to the industry, evaluation of mining investments is a challenging task for the investor. Investments in exploration prospects and undeveloped properties have a high speculative content. Buyers pay for uncertain future prospects. Alternatively, most developed mining investments are large and long-lived and cannot easily be modified during that life. Even so, to be successful, they must compete in an environment in which their reserves - the source of their profits - are often imperfectly known. And markets, competition, technology, and politics are among the many continually changing factors that affect investment performance. Minerals investment evaluation is further complicated because each minerals investment has its own singular combination of risks and opportunities. Each ore type and each ore body presents different problems in reserve evaluation, mining, and extraction. Each minesite has its own often unique combination of mine, infrastructure, political, environmental, and other risks. And the key requirements for commercial success differ substantially among various minerals.

Inexpensive and effective means of delivering courses to mining engineers who live at remote and scattered locations remains to be a challenging issue. Computer-based instructorless but interactive multimedia delivery is a good substitute to traditional short courses and one-way broadcasts. Such a system, enhanced with a wide area network, is an inexpensive alternative to two-way broadcasts and even to a traditional university. Course material can either be delivered on compact disks (CDs) or on-line from the host servers over the phone lines using a personal computer and a modem. Although technically not feasible using ordinary telephone service lines at the present time without further modification, advances in this field indicate that this up and coming medium may dominate the competition in the future. This paper investigates the present and the future of this technology and discusses the experiences gained in creating and disseminating a prototype multimedia CD which was created at the Rock Mechanics and Explosives Research Institute of the University of Missouri-Rolla to teach a portion of a course in Ground Control. The hardware and software used in creating the audio, 3-0 graphics, animation dips, video clips, and movies are listed. The structure of the program and the way how interactivity was achieved is explained in detail.
