Zinc-lead ores of the Pine Point District, Northwest Territories, Canada, are hosted in paleokarst cavities within a Middle Devonian carbonate barrier complex. Of the nearly 100 deposits found, most are irregularly distributed along two main regional stratigraphically controlled trends. The ores, which occur predominantly as open space filling, form deposits most of which average one million tonnes in size with an average grade of 10% combined zinc plus lead. Geological features related to karsting control not only distribution of deposits but also their shape, size and grade. The higher grade ore in these deposits generally occurs in a relatively small core area. Consequently, accuracy of reserve estimation is dependent on drill-hole density and understanding of karst geometry. Several case examples will be reviewed to demonstrate the relationship between shape, size and grade of deposit, geological reserves and drill-hole density, along with a discussion of geological ore reserve estimation methods.

Adequate ventilation of coal mine working faces is the most important technique for controlling respirable dust and methane. Choosing the right technique presents some tough questions. US Bureau of Mines research has shown that to control respirable dust, you must contain the dust near the face, keeping rollback (turbulence) to a minimum. For methane, the most effective approach has been to use a blowing brattice, or tubing, and to create turbulence and disperse the face methane, allowing it to pass over the machine and into the return. It is immediately apparent that the two approaches may counteract one another, thus complicating the decision as to which system may be best for a given situation. At present. Bureau research has developed two successful machine-mounted face ventilation systems to meet these different needs and allow deeper cutting. The fan- powered dust scrubber is designed to control dust primarily associated with blowing face ventilation systems. The spray- fan controls methane on exhaust-ventilated sections.

This work describes the effect of the degree of energy transferred to the pulp, during the conditioning stage, on gold flotation fines recovery, grade and kinetics, with three types of frother (Dowfroth 250, pine oil and MIBC) and amyl xanthate as collector. Best results show an increase in 24% recovery and 50% in concentrate grade, depending on the intensity of conditioning and type of frother (better with Dowfroth 250). For low or intermediate energies (0.5-1.5 kWhlm3 pulp), the fine particles adhere to larger ones, increasing the recovery due to a mixture of carrier (pyrite, in this case) and autogeneous carrier flotation and at higher shear (2-3 kWhlm3 pulp), gold fine particles aggregate themselves. These phenomena are demonstrated by measurements of flotation rate, true flotation (flotation by actual particle-bubble adhesion), and by the amount of entrained particles. Alternatives for this type of pulp conditioning and mechanisms involved are discussed.

NIOSH continues to conduct respirable dust control research for surface mine blasthole drilling operations. Research areas have included testing variables (shroud leakage area, drill deck cross-sectional area, shroud height, collector-to-bailing airflow ratio, etc.) that have the most impact on respirable dust control, development of a dust collector inlet hood, development of a dust collector dump point shroud, and testing of a small diameter water separating sub. This paper summarizes the results of the aforementioned research that has been completed. Additionally, past dust control research for drilling operations of both underground and surface mines completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, created in 1910 and incorporated into NIOSH in 1997, is reviewed.

INTRODUCTION The mining, extraction and refining of metals into useful materials is an honorable profession with an ancient and productive history. Civilizations have long depended upon metals for their implements, structures and machinery necessary for survival, growth, and development. Today, as in the future, metals and minerals are essential to the progress of mankind as we approach the 21st century with technologies and concepts that will require new concepts and production from the metal mining and processing industries. Today is the tomorrow we talked about yesterday and the implementation of new ideas is essential if we are to achieve "Frontier Technology in Mineral Processing". Unfortunately, the state-of-the-art mining, processing, smelting and refining methods historically employed were less than desirable environmentally, which has caused todays public to view the metal mining and processing industry with concern. Presently the ancient rock and chat tips connected with old Roman lead-zinc mines which were worked in Wales are causing stream contamination problems that must be corrected at considerable expense to the local governmental agencies (Firth, J.N.M., et al., 1981). However, improved progress has been made and the environmental control and clean-up procedures utilized by modern lead-zinc operations in the "Viburnum Trend" or "New Lead Belt" of South East Missouri may serve as a model to illustrate how alternative technologies, environmental concerns and cooperative efforts contribute to efficient mineral production within the confines of a U.S. National Forest region without significant environmental impacts. This area received international attention when it was opened within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest in the mid 1960's. By 1970 it ranked first in the world by producing 432,576 short tons of lead ore and has since continued in this position producing 451,153 short tons of lead ore in 1983 representing 91% of the total United States lead production (U.S. Bureau of idines, 1983). This production comes from a mining area approximately 40 miles long by 10 miles wide extending in a north-south direction. Geologically the lead is disseminated throughout the Cambrain age Bonneterre Formation, mostly a dolomite, at depths ranging from 700 to 1200 ft. (213.4 to 365.8 m). Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chaleopyrite (copper) and silver being recovered as economic co-products. This new mining development in one of Missouri is most scenic areas could have led to a classic confrontation between industries and environmentalists. Instead, through the cooperation of industries, governmental agencies and university researchers, the Ozark environment has been protected, and may serve as a model for future coexistence of the mineral industry with the environment. Cooperative Program Development As early as 1965 five new mines and two lead smelters were being prepared for production and environmental concern was an essential part of that planning. All the mining companies became acquainted with representatives of the various federal and state agencies and scientists from the University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR). During the next six years, St. Joe Minerals Corporation, American Metal Climax, Inc., Cominco American Incorporated, Ozark Lead Company (Kennecott) and American Smelting and Refining Company participated in cooperative research efforts. The companies also participated in information exchange meetings, the development of improved analytical methods and the utilization of research findings in the modification or construction of pollution-abatement facilities. Early on research was carried out to determine background values and to establish natural baselines of trace metals in the surrounding environment. The unusual topography and drainage pattern of the mining area were helpful since it was possible to establish control sites and test sites below individual mine-mill operations to study waste-water effects on the receiving streams. The following processes were investigated using ultrasonic treatment in mineral recovery: (1) cleaning coal from coal slurry ponds, and (2) extracting precious metals from tailings and other sources. The treatment entails the production of a water slurry of the material containing the mineral which is made to flow over the vibrating surface of the ultrasonic treatment unit. The vibrations transmitted into the slurry break up particle agglomerates and also produce a scrubbing action on the surfaces of the particles. The treated mineral particles were found to have increased settling rates, better compaction, and more rapid water drainage.

The Jim Bridger Mine is operated by Bridger Coal Company and is located in Sweetwater County, 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Rock Springs, Wyoming (USA). The general location of the mine site is shown on Figure 1. Bridger Coal is a joint venture of NERCO Coal Corp, the operator, and Idaho Energy Resources Company. The permit boundary encompasses in excess of 20,000 acres (81 km2) and is nestled against the western side of the Continental Divide. Production started on July 3, 1974, and the mine has produced approximately 90 million tons (82 million t) while moving approximately 450 million cubic yards (344 million m3) of virgin earth. Annual production averages 5 to 7 million tons (4.5 to 6.4 million t) of run-of-mine coal. Coal is consumed on site by the Jim Bridger Power Plant, a 2,000-megawatt generating station, and the electricity is transmitted to the Pacific Northwest power grid (Oregon, Idaho, Northern California, etc.).

A number of investigators have studied the electrokinetic potential (?) of kaolinite as a function of pH. (1,2,3,4,5) These investigators all agree that the ? is negative except at quite acid pH values. The actual shapes of the curves reported by the several authors vary considerably. In spite of the general negative character of kaolinite the mineral has a rather high anion exchange capacity. (6,7,8) The cation exchange capacity is the lowest for the clay minerals. (6) It has been shown that anionic surfactants adsorb readily onto the mineral even up to neutrality, often in quantities exceeding the reported anion exchange capacity. (7,8) At least part of the anionic adsorption should be onto positive edge sites thought to exist on the mineral. (9,10) In the present study ? of kaolinite was measured as a function of pH using both the streaming potential (sp) and microelectrophoresis (m.e.p.) methods. In addition ? was measured at various pH values as functions of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and trimethyldodecylammonium chloride (TMDAC) concentrations. In some experiments decyl alcohol (DA) was added.

Investigation of several serious hoisting accidents identified machine brake failure as the most common cause. The recent revelation of this potential hazard has prompted regulatory authorities to require an additional, independent, emergency braking system. As a result of this initiative, a new generation of braking systems have been developed and applied to mine elevators. This paper will discuss the design and testing of an electrical dynamic brake, pneumatic rope brake, and traction sheave brake. The effect of compound braking on hoisting systems equipped with multiple brakes will also be addressed.

The need for effectively evaluating the potential for surface subsidence due to under- ground mining has been widely documented. As the emphasis within the coal mining industry changes to reflect the increasing demand of this resource, the potential for damage due to differential surface subsidence will certainly become more acute. The present state-of-the-art of predicting ground motion due to underground excavations is, at best, primitive when one considers the immense complexity of possible geological inter- actions. For the most part predictions have been limited to empirical evaluations based upon earlier case histories. While the tools of the subsidence engineer are limited, they are important and serve to provide reasonable bounds for possible ground motion. As underground mining becomes more extensive, however, there will be many instances where excessive subsidence will be most undesirable and yet there may be few, if any, case histories similar to the operation in question.

The structure and occurrence of nickeliferous laterite profiles are described and explained in terms of mineral solubility and drainage conditions. Complete profiles, from top to bottom, include: limonite zone; nontronite or silica zone; and saprolite zone. The middle zone is present only where drainage is sufficiently slow to allow saturation conditions to build up with resulting quartz or smectite precipitation. This precipitation may occur in any climate at a water table or in tropical climates with a long dry season. The degree of serpentinization of the laterite parent rock is important in determining the nature of the saprolite zone. Unserpentinized peridotite produces saprolite ores with hard residual rock cores, nontronitic or amorphous saprolitic rims, and fracture fillings of garnierite and quartz. Ser-pentinites yield relatively homogeneous serpentine saprolite, with minimal quartz or garnierite.

An application of water-system magnetizing technology for the mineral processing and hydrometallurgy is introduced in this paper. The water-system magnetizing technique flotation and cyanidation leaching test of vein-ore of gold-bearing and conventional technique flotation and cyanidation leaching of gold-bearing vein-ore was carried out. The best condition of water-system magnetizing was determined by orthogonal test. The results have shown that the water-system magnetizing technology may increase the efficiency of flotation and cyanidation leaching for gold. The industry-scale test results also show that it can increase flotation recovery by 1-3% and leaching extraction by 3-5% of a gold-bearing vein- ore. The interaction of magnetizing water-system with minerals was carried out and initially investigated.

The exploration geologist is frequently confronted with the problem of allocating his resources, i.e., exploration effort, among various areas. Although geologic, financial, and logistic considerations influence the allocations, no objective criterion is usually given that determines the optimal allocation. Maximizing the expected gain in information, subject to the constraint of a limited exploration budget, is used as the objective criterion to allocate airborne reconnaissance effort. The information function, I(x), quantifies the expected gain in information, where x is the scale of exploration. To calculate the information function, the following probabilities are required: the probability that an area contains a deposit; the probability that an anomaly is produced by the target; and the probability that an anomaly is produced by a barren area (false signal). Alternatively, the barren areas can be replaced by other targets. To illustrate the allocation method, the optimal number of line kilometers, i.e., the optimal line spacing per area, is determined for an aeromagnetic survey for iron in Egypt.

With the advent of new high-strength magnetic materials, rare-earth magnetic separators have become more common place for processing heavy mineral sands. In many instances, rare-earth magnets have replaced conventional separators such as electromagnetic cross-belt and induced-roll type machines. This paper will present the results from a detailed test program developed to evaluate the performance of rare-earth drum and roll separators for processing heavy mineral sands. The effect of machine design parameters, such as magnetic element configuration and separator diameter, will be reviewed in light of these test results. The impact of basic operating parameters (i.e. feed rate and roll speed) on separation efficiency will also be presented.

Though most porphyry-molybdenum deposits lend themselves to various reserve estimating techniques, still there must exist the constant effort to not merely obtain an estimate but rather to obtain the best estimate. To answer the challenge of a complete ore reserve estimation, one must attack the problem with the purpose of obtaining the results closest to reality. What we wish to determine is simple: metric tons (short tons), grade, and kilograms (pounds) of molybdenum contained. In order to effectively accomplish this task, further consideration must be given to the ease of using the information obtained and its inherent reliability. The only known method for ore reserve estimation that supplies the needed results along with its distribution and a measure of confidence provided by sound mathematical backup is geostatistics. The following review is an example of geostatistical application of an ore reserve estimate at the AMAX Henderson mine demonstrating technique, viability, and usefulness of results.

Information Technology has addressed those problems unique to senior management in the mineral industry. In general, these problems are those concerned with decision-making. Peter Drucker in his discussion of making effective decisions identifies five phases: (1) define the problem, (2) analyze the problem, (3) develop alternate solutions, (4) decide the best solution, and (5) convert the decision into effective action. The scope of the chapter by Guernsey addresses the first three phases which provide input to the decision-maker. The decisions to be made relate, in most instances, to the economics related to a mineral property or process. Computer models have been designed to generate these economic and financial evaluations. No one model is appropriate to the solution of all management's problems. In this chapter several applications are identified and summarized; a model for the economic evaluation of a mineral property is described in greater detail. The implementation of such models is dependent on the unique needs of management.

High speed stirred milling is a relatively new method of grinding in the metalliferous process industries. However it has been it has been in wide spread use in the industrial mineral field for over 30 years for various minerals. Many existing metallurgical operations are looking to maximize economic return from existing deposits, requiring new thinking and technologies. The operating experience of two existing copper operations will be covered to show the effect of the introduction of the Metso Stirred Media Detritor (SMD) a new type of high speed stirred mill. Both operations have derived significant metallurgical benefits from the introduction of this new technology. The benefits and process difficulties are covered and explained.

The term "potash" denotes a family of minerals and compounds of potassium, containing greatly varying percentages of that element. In commercial usage, most of the potash products are used in agriculture, where they are used to furnish potassium, one of the three basic elements for plant growth; the other two being nitrogen and phosphorus. Potassium's contribution to plant life is principally as a stalk strengthener, and if soils can no longer supply this basic element, then crop failure is inevitable without nutrition supplied from fertilization. While agriculture uses some 95 per cent of the potash produced, other industries require highly refined potash, for the manufacture of soaps, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic rubber, insecticides, photographic film, and other products. Until the mid-nineteenth century, world agriculture had three options related to the potash content of soils: 1) crop rotation and pasturing to attempt to minimize the loss of potash in harvesting, 2) abandoning depleted and exhausted soils (part of the reason for the vast migration of populations in Europe and Asia), and 3) burning forests for the use of the ashes, and concentrating the nutritional value by boiling the ashes in large kettles, for "pot - ash". With the discovery in the mid 1800's and exploitation of potash from underground deposits in Germany, the beginning of the modern potash industry was established, but American potash requirements remained substantially dependent on German production until the 1920's, when oil drilling in the Permian Basin of New Mexico

Disc Cutter Wear is influenced by several geological and technical factors and excessive wear can have a major impact on the excavation efficiency of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Disc cutter replacement events cause a disruption to the construction schedule and costs, and should be minimized throughout the project to the extent possible. A well-executed cutterhead inspection and maintenance plan can help mitigate abrupt cutterhead interventions and reduce its effect on project schedule and cost. This paper examines cutterhead inspection and disc cutter replacement events as well as subsequent wear data recorded in the first 7km of the 10.3 km long, 6.3 m diameter Coxwell Sanitary Bypass Tunnel (CBT) project in Toronto, Ontario. The CBT alignment is mainly through Georgian Bay Formation shale.
