It is well known in both the research field and in commercial flotation processes that the grades and recoveries obtained from flotation plants are heavily influenced by the structure and height of the froths produced in the flotation cells. The development of steady-state mathematical models of flotation processes based upon practical and readily obtained parameters have demanded detailed information about the structure of flotation froths. The important parameters are the distribution of floating values, gangue and water in the froth with respect to froth height, cell pulp density, cell air flow rates and flotation inducing additives. Little work has been conducted in this field although considerable attention has been paid to bubble loading and other factors close to the cell froth/pulp interface. Laboratory batch tests are prefaced for the derivation of the above mentioned parameters for both practical and economic reasons. The standard laboratory flotation tests using a batch cell produces a froth of low height (1 to 3 cms generally) together with a varying cell pulp density as the test progresses due to the addition of top up water and the removal of froth from the cell. This form of test can be considered only as giving information about froth conditions close to the cell froth/pulp interface under conditions of widely varying cell pulp densities. In commercial processes the froth heights are much larger (frequently greater than 10 cms); therefore the laboratory batch test, although useful in many ways, does not directly yield parameters relating the state of the froth flowing over the cell lip to process operating conditions. To investigate flotation conditions, where more realistic froth heights are developed, an equilibrium type of batch cell has been developed at Warren Spring 1 Laboratory . World demand for phosphate rock has increased significantly in the past fifteen years. Prior to the early 1960's, most of the world production was obtained from Florida, North Africa, and Kola. As the 1960's arrived, new mines in North Florida and Eastern North Carolina, as well as expanded production in the Western United States, .increased domestic production. Many new mines overseas have also become significant. This includes countries such as Senegal, Togo, Israel, Spanish Sahara, and Jordan. Limited production, often as by-products, has been noted in South Africa, Brazil, and other countries. In recent years, and even recent months, we have learned of many new areas being considered as potential sources of phosphate rock. This includes Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Colombia, and Brazil. Many other developing countries have discoveries and are considering their new deposits, often with difficult beneficiation problems, as potential sources of phosphate. These factors all relate to expanded world, population and the demand for more fertilizer products to produce food. In this paper, four areas of the world with different types of phosphate deposits are briefly reviewed to contrast the ore beneficiation problems to Florida procedures--long considered the "standard" of the industry, at least for most of the United States' domestic production. Agrico has three large operating mines in Florida with total production capacity exceeding seven million tons per year. Here, pebble phosphate (+14 mesh material) is produced without the use of flotation, whereas all of the material finer than 14 mesh is subjected to flotation beneficiation to upgrade into high grade concentrates.

This paper describes the serious injuries that have occurred to bulldozer operators working at domestic coal, metal and nonmetal mines in the United States. A serious injury is defined as one that results in either a fatality or in lost work time. Examined were 873 injury records compiled by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). The time period covered was 1988 through 1997. These injuries resulted in 18 fatalities and 31,866 lost work days. All of these injuries occurred to dozer operators while they were performing common production tasks. An injury classification system was developed to code the narrative information that describes the circumstances surrounding the injuries. Jolts and jars accounted, for 604 or 70% of the serious injuries to bulldozer operators, and jolts and jars accounted for 75% of the workdays lost. Vertical jars comprised the largest set (354 incidents) of jolting and jarring injuries. In more than half of these incidents, the operator was backing up the dozer. Working near an edge carries significant risk for fatal injuries. Of 116 incidents where the dozer fell over an edge, rolled over or fell into a hidden void, 14 (12%) resulted in fatal injuries. In cases where the dozer operator either jumped or was thrown out of the cab in a fallover or rollover, seven out of 17 of the operators were killed. This study finds that further reductions in injury risk would require more widespread use of seat belts; consideration (and maintenance) of the seat and seat suspension systems that might reduce injury risk from jolts and jars; research interventions to assess the effect of alternative engineering designs to dampen or isolate the effects of shock and vibration; and continued attention to skilled performance, i.e., the integration of hazard awareness, recognition and response with dozer operational skills.

The Line Creek Mine is operated by Crows Nest Resources Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Shell Canada Resources Limited. It is located approximately 25 km north of Sparwood in southeast British Columbia (refer to figure 1). The Line Creek coal deposit is part of the Upper Elk Coalfield in the East Kootenays. The coal is a medium volatile, low sulfur, bituminous coal and is used as a coking coal. Coal close to the outcrop is typically of low F.S.I. and is processed for thermal use. The present pits have a total coal reserve of 30 million clean tonnes and is a multi-bench, open-pit operation. The coal is recovered by front shovel and backhoe combination, and hauled to the plant with a fleet of 120-tonne and 40-tonne capacity trucks. Line Creek is unique in that it can simultaneously treat both metallurgical and thermal coal in separate processing facilities (refer to figure 2). Run-of-mine coal is delivered to the truck dump. The plus 50 mm material is scalped off and reduced to minus 50 mm in two rotary breakers. The raw coal is then conveyed to one of five, 5000-tonne capacity, silos. Typically one silo is used for thermal coal and four for metallurgical coal (refer to figure 3).

Accurate estimation of resources is one of the major challenges in mineral project evaluation. Contemporary mineral resource estimation practice calls for contribution from several disciplines and execution of several interdependent tasks. 3D estimation domain modelling is obviously one of the most essential components of such a substantial process which forms the basis of this research. The study constitutes a comparative analysis of four major domain modelling techniques; (i) explicit modelling, (ii) implicit modelling, (iii) indicator kriging, and (iv) conditional simulation. It involves comparison of outcomes for alternative scenarios to assess the implications of the modelling decision on resource estimates of a polymetallic massive sulfide deposit located in western Turkey. Thus, identical grade estimation method and parameters are considered to identify the discrepancies arising only from the choice of the domain modelling approach and underlying assumptions. Economic implications are demonstrated in the form of range of outcomes for the extends of the ultimate pit, ore tonnages (min:37.0 Mt, max: 46.7Mt), waste tonnages (min:201.2 Mt, max: 251.2 Mt), stripping ratios (min:5.18, max: 5.71), and total pit values (min: $1.05B, max: $1.45B). Examination of solid models as well as cross-sections revealed that major discrepancies are observed beyond outlying drillholes. Therefore, it has been proposed that assumptions regarding extrapolation distance is the main source of mentioned dissimilarities. Key words: Domain modelling, explicit modelling, implicit modelling, indicator kriging, conditional simulation INTRODUCTION Resource estimation is apparently a challenging process calling for extensive expertise and input from several sources, each of which introducing its related uncertainties. In the last decades, substantial role of quantitative analysis of several forms of risk and uncertainty in evaluating projects’ upside potential and downside risks has been realized. Studies indicated that mining companies have been severely impacted because of not meeting project expectations. As noted by Vallee (2000) “… in the first year of operation after start-up, 60% of mines surveyed had an average rate of production less than 70% of designed capacity”. Several other studies on mining projects also revealed that uncertainties related with the resource model are one of the major contributors of mentioned shortfalls. In this perspective, quantification of uncertainties associated with each component of estimation process is critical. 3D estimation domain models capturing major mineralization controls are the fundamental components of contemporary mineral resource estimation. Domain models are key guiding tools for estimation and are products of a complex process involving many unknowns and assumptions. There exists a number of 3D modelling alternatives which are distinct with respect to complexity, time and effort involved. Acknowledging potential influences on downstream mining practices and relavent economic implications, risks and uncertainties associated with 3D domain modelling are critical yet poorly studied aspects.

Over one half billion tons of coal per year is scalped, classified, deslimed, drained and rinsed, dewatered and final sized on rotary, vibrating, shaking or stationary screens. The vibrating screen is the industry work horse and performs the bulk of the screening functions in the coal preparation plant. There are two major types of brute force mechanical vibrating screens used in coal preparation plants: (1) the two-bearing one-shaft inclined screen and (2) the four-bearing two-shaft horizontal screen. Both of these types are familiar to coal producers.

A realistic simulation model has been used for designing longwall mining, especially for solving operational problems. This paper describes background, development, validation and some applications of the simulation model for mining people who are unfamiliar with O.R. or computer technique, as a simple planning tool. The following items were established: logical analysis and algorithmic design for practical longwall mining, structure of hypothesis behavioral organism, input parameters, using practical knowledge and operational statistics of the mechanized longwall system experienced for many years.

The results of an experimental study on the dispersion and deposition characteristics of fine coal dust in mine airways are presented. Experiments were conducted at various flow velocities using bituminous and semi-anthracite-coal dust which had a large proportion of dust in the respirable size range. Cross sectional variations in the concentration of dust at various points in the airway were also measured. Instruments used in the experiments included gravimetric samplers and impactors. Concentration measurements were made both for the respirable and total airborne dust. The experimental design, sampling procedures and results are discussed. The study is aimed at providing a better understanding of the temporal and spatial behavior of dust particles in underground mine airways.

Most mines using backfill routinely carry out quality control (QC) testing of backfill mixes with unconfined compression test cylinders. This is true for paste operations, hydraulic fill operations, and cemented rockfill operations worldwide. However, a large number of mines simply do not prepare and test the backfill samples in a consistent manner and fail to properly analyze or interpret the test results. Conventional concrete test criteria are not applicable given the differences in the mix constituents and the fact that a large number of the backfill QC test cylinders typically fail to achieve the target strength. Standard industry practices are needed to improve the analysis and interpretation of QC test results and to provide a better means of determining if the backfill is achieving its intended target strength. This paper will attempt to lay the groundwork for standard industry practices and will address several key questions raised by operators, such as how laboratory test data compares to in-stope performance, and how many QC tests should fail before a red flag should be raised. INTRODUCTION Although paste backfill is widely used throughout the mining industry, cemented rockfill (CRF) remains as the backfill of choice in places like Nevada where very poor ground conditions mandate the use of underhand mining. The safety and stability of undercut entries beneath backfill is a function of the quality of the cemented fill, which is typically assured through routine quality control testing. In the absence of a backfill quality standard, most mines rely on concrete standards to design and interpret their backfill quality control programs. In the USA, these standards are developed and published by organizations such as the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). However, the application of these standards to cemented backfills can be very difficult owing to the high degree of variability in backfill mixes and the resulting variability in test results. To illustrate, the concrete industry standards denote that an acceptable (passing) test result occurs when the average strength of the duplicate test cylinders exceeds the target strength and no single test result deviates from the target strength by more than 10% (ACI 214R). Remedial measures must be taken if three consecutive tests fail. With mine backfills, it is safe to say that these criteria are rarely achievable. A further, more dramatic example is the accepted coefficient of variation for concrete QC cylinders. According to ACI 214R, the coefficient of variation (CV) should range from below 3% (excellent rating) to above 6% (poor rating). However, if this analysis method is applied to several backfill QC databases from operating mines, coefficients of variation are calculated on the order of 50%. Clearly, there is a need to develop better industry practices for assessing the quality of mine backfill and to assist mine operators with the interpretation of test results and the development of action plans in the event of undesired outcomes.

As the surface reserves are being depleted, more and more stone operators are seeking underground mining options. Stability of underground openings is a major concern for the safety and productivity. This paper relates to a field study conducted at a large underground limestone mine in Central Pennsylvania. Identification of hazards leading to ground failures and assessment of roof fall risks are important in mitigating injuries. Field observations at this mine were integrated with Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) mapping software recently developed by West Virginia University. The system is designed to combine field study data related to geologic factors, mining-induced damages, roof profile, and ground water influx to generate RFRI maps. The mine has adopted a proactive ground control program consisting of comprehensive examination of drilling and bolting logs; precision surveying of roof and rib; accurate mapping of cutters, falls, and geologic structures; and installation of extensometers and microseismic monitoring systems. Investment of time and resources has eliminated fatalities and lost-time injuries due to ground fall. This paper presents the geologic settings, mining conditions, ground control issues along with risk management and control techniques adopted at the study mine.

The Limberg III PSP is one of the European projects that addresses the implementation of the UN SDGs. The challenge of the project is the construction of a 770 m long pressure shaft to be excavated with a TBM at an inclination of 42°.

A technology for producing liquid fuels from oil shale at prices competitive with crude oil prices is a necessary but not exclusive prerequisite for the development of a shale oil industry. Many other factors will affect the timing and the rate at which oil shale is commercially developed. Among the more important are: governmental policy concerning oil shale and oil resources (including the Outer Continental Shelf) that are under Federal control; oil import policy; Federal taxation of shale oil production including depletion allowances; regulatory practices; competition from other energy sources, both synthetic and natural; Federal treatment of factors affecting competing energy resources; and present legislation under which the public resources must be leased. Significant changes in any of the foregoing factors could have a controlling effect on the timing and rate of oil shale development. The effect of changes in each of these factors is evaluated.

Public concern over possible degradation of groundwater resources has resulted in an array of Federal laws and corresponding state laws to regulate contaminates from solid and hazardous waste. A mine owner must be familiar with environmental regulations which could impact his operation and must know what precautions and corrective actions to take in order to protect his mining operation from potentially expensive remedial actions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has issued few regulations controlling the management of mining wastes. Federal regulation of mining came primarily under the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) administered by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM). Waste generated from the extraction, benefication and processing of ores and minerals was exempt from regulation under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), which is EPA's major instrument in controlling surface contaminates. On December 31, 1985, EPA submitted to Congress a report entitled "Wastes from the Extraction and Benefication of Metallic Ores, Phosphate Rock, Asbestos, Overburden from Uranium Mining and Oil Shale", which will be referred to, henceforth, as the Congressional Report. This Congressional Report assessed the possible adverse effects of mine associated wastes. This report is the first step toward developing regulations with which EPA can regulate waste from the extraction, benefication and process of mineral ores.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia operates a mining complex located in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. This district consists of both underground and surface operations. The East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is one of the major orebodies in this district. Subsurface caving of the EESS has been carried out in a systematic series of mining lifts dating back almost 30 years. Present production is from the third lift (Deep Ore Zone), which is scheduled to peak at 80,000 mtpd during 2009, with this rate sustained through 2015. The orebody is proven below the existing caving level, with the next vertical block called the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ). This paper presents an overview of the DMLZ Mine based on recent feasibility level study. The mine is being designed for a peak production rate of 29.2 million mtpy, with 1,803 total ore draw points spread over a panel caving footprint of about 1.3km by 375m. The present reserves for this mine total 501 million tonnes. Located 1,400-1,800m below the original surface, the DMLZ will be one of the deepest caving operations in the world. Production is scheduled to commence in 2015. Discussion is provided on most design aspects including; caving methodology and layouts, geotechnical predictions and risks, ore handling systems, ventilation design and associated infrastructure, high-lift pumping system, cost estimation and expenditure scheduling.

For gold mines, orebody uncertainty is one of the leading causes of differences between planned and actual production. Geostatistical conditional simulations create multiple equally probable orebody block model realizations which are conditional to the current drilling information and demonstrate the sampled grade distributions and spatial statistics. These simulated block models are key inputs for a stochastic evaluation to show the likely range of grades and cash flows to be delivered by a mine plan. The stochastic evaluation outputs can be used to compare different mine plans in terms of expected values and risks to planned grades, production, costs, Net Present Value (NPV) and other plan metrics. For the McLaughlin gold mine, risk profiles are demonstrated to show how different mine, cut-off and stockpile strategies can reduce risk and improve expected value. The strategies considered were effective in improving expected NPV and reducing or eliminating tonnage uncertainty, but the strategies had little impact on reducing the uncertainty of NPV’s or mill grades. The stochastic evaluation process is also used to compare the risk impact of orebody uncertainty against the risk of not achieving planned mining tonnages or vertical advance rates. Risks for plans created with and without stochastic mine plan optimization are also compared.

Reserve depletion in Central Appalachia is continuously creating unique ground conditions for underground coal mines with many of these difficult environments directly attributable to multiple seam mining and/or deeper overburdens. While many empirical studies have been performed in an effort to improve understanding of these problems along with potentially improving safety and extraction, many of the difficulties encountered lie outside of the normal realm of expected behavior. This is often the case when mining in bump prone ground, where additional concerns are introduced and design buffers are warranted. The boundary element software LaModel was used to study three bump events in a deep-cover, multiple-seam reserve located in Harlan county in the Kentucky region of Central Appalachia. This region is notoriously bump prone due to significant areas of deep cover, the presence of strong to massive lithology (such as sandstone), and an extensive history of underground mining that increases the probability of multiple seam interactions. Multiple seam interactions are best understood with respect to site-specific parameters, including both the geological and geometrical components of interburden, overburden and mine workings. Initially, empirical-based approaches (ARMPS/AMSS) were used when attempting to back-analyze the bump events. However, it was recognized that a more detailed investigation was necessary to understand the fundamental causes/conditions associated with the bump events. Consequently, the LaModel study resulted in a mine-specific calibration method for the reserve. With this method in place, enhanced bump prediction throughout the reserve is expected, such that the stability, recovery and safety of future mining may be improved.

"The purpose of this study is to explore how the geochemical and petrographic components of coal may impact its physical properties, as well as how these components correlate with a history of reportable dynamic failure in coal mines. Dynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the explosive failures of rock in a mining environment. These events occur suddenly and often with no warning, resulting in worker injury up to and including fatality in greater than 60% of MSHA reportable cases. A database of variables was compiled using publicly available datasets, which included compositional geographic, strength, and Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) data (ACARP, 1998). Results indicate that bumping coals are less mature, lower in carbon, higher in oxygen, softer, and less well cleated than coals that do not bump. High liptinite content was found to correlate with higher average UCS values. However, no clear, direct correlation between UCS and dynamic failure status was observed. The findings of this study establish that differences exist between coals that have experienced reportable dynamic failure accidents versus those that have not. These differences are inherent to the coal itself, independent of mining-induced risk factors. Results further illuminate how compositional attributes of coal influence physical properties and begin to clarify potential links between geochemistry and dynamic failure status. Only through the better understanding of risk can more effective mitigating strategies be enacted.INTRODUCTIONDynamic failure events, also termed bumps, bounces, or bursts, are the sudden failures of rock in a mining or quarrying environment. Much research has been devoted to the prevention of these events. The effects of overburden depth and stiffness, mine design, mining practices, and in situ stresses are well documented (Agapito and Goodrich, 2000; Brauner, 1994; Campoli and Kertis, 1987; Holland and Thomas, 1954; Iannacchione and Zelanko, 1995; Lawson et al., 2016b; Mark, 2016; Newman, 2002; Peng, 2008; Whyatt, 2008). Despite these significant advancements in coal mine ground control, however, events continue to occur. Proactive risk mitigation remains an important research area. Strategic planning, including the process of developing competitive strategy, is an integral part of all organizational management; from one person operations to multi-national Fortune 100 firms. The structure of that process varies from decisions and direction based upon one person's intuition to the integration of multiple strategic planning groups from each of a firm's many business units. Everyone has heard interesting strategic planning stories such as the railroad industry's long term failure to realize that they were in the transportation business and not the railroad business, the decision to "give away the razors and sell them the blades", Caterpillar's "SOQ NaP" campaign (Sell On Quality, Not On Price), or the tanker industry's eventual realization that by better managing turn-around the firm could control their largest single cost: depreciation. It is important to remember that very few strategic planning decisions are going to become Harvard Business Review case studies. That fact does not, however, diminish the need for understanding the firm's business, and actively planning how it is going to remain in business in the future!

Bromide stabilizes the auric or aurous ion by forming a stable complex in acidic aqueous solution. The oxidizing agent normally used for the process is bromine, which is a corrosive liquid with high vapour pressure. This is, in fact, the main reason why it has not found acceptance yet as an industrial oxidant for gold. Ferric ion with hydrogen peroxide and/or sodium hypochlorite have already proved to be effective oxidants for the dissolution of gold from a rotating disc in a bromide-containing aqueous solution. In the present work, preliminary tests with four selected ore samples were tested to evaluate the dissolution of gold with the same system already tested with the rotating disc (Br-/Fe3+/H2o2/NaCIO). Compared to the conventional cyanidation, results were superior in one instance only. The major obstacle seems to be the maintenance of a suitable potential to allow the complex formation. However, the studied system may be interesting, is in some situations it may yield better results than conventional cyanidation; therefore, further investigation seems to be worth doing.

Kaolin samples from Rio Capim Resources were treated in conventional and superconducting magnetic separators to study the main variables that influence the impurity removal process. Two coating clays and a delaminated clay were tested. The variables studied were retention time (cross-sectional velocity), magnetic-field intensity and matrix type. The feed brightness ranged, from 84.7% to 87.6% ISO, for the coating clays and ranged from 80.7% to 85.4% ISO for the delaminated clay. Using a conventional magnetic separator with an applied, field of 1.5 to 2.0 T (tesla), the brightness values were higher than 88% ISO for the unleached coating claw products and were higher than 87% ISO for the unleached delaminated product. With a maximum field intensity in the superconducting machine of 5.0T unleached brightness values higher than 88.5 % ISO were attained for both coating and delaminated clays.
