The minerals business is dynamic and competitive and the economic viability and/or profitability of any mineral company depends on maximizing recoveries while minimizing costs. In order to achieve this goal, it's essential that you have a clear understanding of the current status, including strengths and weaknesses, of the operation. The authors have developed a systematic approach to plant auditing which we have used successfully at several operations. The strategy presented in this paper can be tailored to fit a wide range of audits. This flexibility is a key feature of the approach.

Drilling programs and the study of active geothermal systems have shown that the reservoir rocks in many fields contain minor quantities of base and precious metals. Commonly, base-metal sulfides occur in the subsurface but, where present, Au, Ag, Hg, As, T1 and Sb rich precipitates deposit near, or at, the surface. Although in some fields (Geysers, Larderello, Tongonan) some of the ore minerals (and others) are relict, there is evidence that they are now depositing in a few systems. Recent work on active hydrothermal systems in New Zealand shows that: (1) Sphalerite, galena, chalcopyrite (forming veins and disseminated discrete crystals) plus rare pentlandite, cobaltite and arsenopyrite, occur at Broadlands, NZ. Rare quantities of base-metal sulfides also occur in cores and cuttings from the geothermal fields of Waiotapu, Kawerau, Tauhara, and Ngawha. Further, Kakimoto (1983) has identified cassiterite, native silver, and trace gold in cores from Tauhara, in the south-eastern part of the Wairakei field. Bore temperatures at the depths from which these minerals were recovered are mostly between 220° and 300°C, but at Broadlands are locally as low as 120°C. The host rocks are Quaternary talc-alkali, silicic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, andesites, dacite and deep Mesozoic greywackes and argillites; however, there is no obvious relationship between mineralization and stratigraphy, permeability or well output. (2) The deposition of amorphous precious metal precipitates (Au, Ag, Hg, As, Sb, T1) from hot springs and well discharges has taken place at Broadlands, Waiotapu and Rotokawa; it also occurs at Kawerau. (3) Water discharging from Frying Pan Lake, Waimangu, is presently depositing siliceous sinter containing up to 4.1% tungsten. A characteristic of mineral-depositing fluids in the New Zealand geothermal fields is their very low salinity (total dissolved salts of 3000 ppm or less but with high CO2); they are of near- neutral alkali chloride composition, although water discharging from Frying Pan Lake has a pH of 4.5, and very low metal contents. Very effective concentration processes (10 times for gold at Broadlands) must occur: in the subsurface these include boiling and rapid cooling but near, and at, the surface, mixing of waters of different pH seems to dominate. In particular, descending acid condensate, derived from separated steam and oxidation of H2S mixes with its parent alkali chloride water, resulting in precipitation of amorphous ore metals. Base-metal sulfides also occur in veins and as disseminated grains in geothermal fields at Tongonan, Leyte and Southern Negros, Philippines. These fields have a porphyry-type setting with host rocks of Miocene andesitic lavas and pyroclastics intruded by diorites so that the fields have undergone complicated thermal histories before cooling to their present base temperatures of about 325°C. Precious metals have precipitated from waters from some wells (Leach, pers. comm.) but they do not, as yet, form ore-grade deposits.

Almost all persons connected with mining industry have had an exasperating experience like the following: 'On a cold and frosty morning in mid-January, you find yourself quite happy with the world. Production is up and the mine has been running smoothly. All at once the radio cracks up your tranquility -- 'so and so' piece of equip¬ment has broken its 'whatzit'. Now the iron is in the fire, and things have to be fixed quick.!' This can be a major failure which will bring the whole operation to a grinding halt or just one of the numerous maintenance headaches on an auxiliary piece of equipment. After one has experienced a major or minor catastrophe, he has to wonder whether some other methods with respect to design and maintenance would help prevent these unexpected calamities. The objective of this paper is to gain an insight into the charac¬teristics of steel at cold temperatures so that better decisions can be made with respect to maintenance and repair of mining equipment. Most machinery and their structures are exposed to cold temperatures. Even in locations as far south as Alabama and Arizona, brief periods of cold in winter months can adversely affect the ability of mach¬ines to do their work. To understand the background of cold temperature brittle fracture, jet us examine its basic elements. First, when steel gets cold, it gets brittle. This is best described by Figure 1. Ore microscopy has been applied to the complex lead-zinc-copper-cobalt-nickel ores from the Madison Mire in the Fredericktown subdistrict of the Southeast Missouri Lead District to predict potential beneficiation problems. It has been found that in some portions of the ore deposits, textures are present which may result in metal losses. In ores from the Bonneterre Transition Zone the intimate association of siegenite with chalcopyrite may result in cobalt and nickel losses to the copper concentrate. In ores from higher stratigraphic horizons, this association is relatively uncommon, and siegenite is commonly associated with bravoite. This latter association will increase the recovery of the cobalt and nickel in bravoite, even though some of the fine-grained bravoite will not be recoverable. Other textures which may result in potential beneficiation problems include coatings of covellite on chalcopyrite and inclusions of sphalerite in galena.

The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture project is located about 80 km (50 miles) north of Elko, NV. It produces approximately 9.3 t/a (300,000 oz/year) of gold. The joint venture is 70% owned by Independence Mining and 30% by Meridian Gold. Independence Mining is the operator. The Jerritt Canyon Joint Venture started operations in 1980 by mining a series of open-pit mines. The discovery of deeper ores during early 1990s made it neccessary for the operation to mine a large portion of its annual production by underground mining methods. Underground production started in 1993 at the West Generator Mine. This was followed by the Murray Mine in late 1994. Two additional underground projects are being developed. Underground mining at Jerritt Canyon is scheduled to produce about 3.9 t (128,000 oz) in 1997.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. Industrial usage of clays for current and new applications will continue to grow into the next century. The rate of growth will be highest in the less developed areas of the world. Transportation costs are a significant part of the delivered price, so the location of reserves and processing facilities for kaolin, bentonite, and palygorskite (attapulgite) are reviewed relative to serving these emerging markets. New value added applications will increase in the more developed areas which will require high quality raw materials, more sophisticated processing, and rigorous quality control.

Other than being used to convey fill material for the gob stowage or building of ribside packs on advancing longwell faces, pneumatic conveying has not been used for the transport of materials on a large scale in mining operations. The technique is extensively used in the wood products industry for conveying wood chips, limestone and other ingredients for the manufacture of paper, for the transfer from railcars, barges or ships to silos or stockpiles and further transfer into the pulp mills. This method of material transfer has the distinct advantage of transporting suitable material over horizontal and vertical distances within the same system. In considering material associated with mining, this includes, ore, coal and rock up to 4 inch cubed size, throughputs of 200 tons per hour over horizontal distances of 3000 feet or vertical lifts of 2000 feet. In recent years tests have been carried out to determine the physical and economic limitations of pneumatic hoisting, the results of which have led to the installation of two fully productive coal hoisting systems at mines of the National Coal Board in Great Britain. The equipment used for the pneumatic hoisting of coal or waste rock is described in this paper, together with a brief history of the tests which led up to the installation of the two hoisting systems in Great Britain.

Newmont Gold Company has advantageously used the capabilities of mineral oxidizing bacteria to develop a process for pretreatment of low grade sulfidic and carbonaceous-sulfidic refractory gold ores. The biooxidation process results in the oxidation of the sulfidic minerals with increased exposure of gold for subsequent gold recovery. The biooxidized carbonaceous-sulfidic ores cannot be heap leached with cyanide because of the "preg-robbing" characteristics of the carbonaceous matters in the ores. An alternative heap leach process using ammonium thiosulfate was developed to extract gold from the "preg-robbing" biooxidized ores. The ammonium thiosulfate leach process has been successfully practiced both in laboratory and pilot plant testing. Satisfactory test results encourage the continuation of process development.

A 4.5-mile-long, 96-inch-diameter outfall pipeline was constructed between North Texas Municipal Water District’s proposed Sister Grove Regional Water Resource Recovery Facility and the Stiff Creek Discharge Structure. Two TBM-mined tunnel segments were excavated for the outfall pipeline through rock and mixed-face conditions within the Austin Chalk Formation. The TBM mining performance was tracked in detail and evaluated during mining. This paper discusses the TBM configuration, TBM utilization, advance rates, and challenges of both tunnel segments.

Mineral suspensions show Newtonian flow properties at lower solid concentration, but change into non-Newtonian regime as the solids content is increased. For Newtonian fluids viscosity is independent of shear rate, but for non-Newtonian fluids it varies with rate of shear. Therefore, measurement of viscosity at a shear rate, different from the process will be futile unless the slurry is Newtonian. This is especially true for hydrocyclone operation, where the rate of shear is different at different points within the hydrocyclone. In this case, it is very important to determine the flow type of the suspension before attempting to establish any correlation between viscosity and process efficiency. A new technique to distinguish such changes in flow type has been developed. This involved a co-axial cylinder type viscometer which measured apparent viscosity at a low shear rate, and a vibrating sphere type viscometer which measured the apparent viscosity at a high shear rate. Special precautions were taken to allow measurements of viscosity of rapidly settling mineral suspensions. Because the vibrating sphere viscometer operated at a much higher shear rate than the rotating viscometer, the two instruments together could determine the shear-rate dependency of the viscosity. Ground silica of 80% passing 65~m size in water was used to prepare slurries at concentrations ranging from 1O-70wt% solids. Viscosity of each slurry sample was measured simultaneously by both the viscometers and the results were compared with each other. With this technique, it was found that all the silica slurry samples were in the Newtonian flow regime.

The motion of the charge inside a grinding mill is of considerable practical importance. The dynamics of grinding mills have been the subject of study by a number of workers because it can accurately predict: i) the power drawn by the mill, ii) the distribution of forces inside the mill, and hence the wear rate of balls as well as the liners, and iii) mass transport of milled product through the porous ball charge. Some of the earlier analyses of the motion of a charge of particulate material in a tumbling mill were reported by White (1904), Davis (1919), and Dyer (1945) and have been reviewed by Rose and Sullivan (1958). In these works, frictional force at the wall of the mill and between the colliding balls, and the interaction of different ball trajectories, was not considered. Moreover, it was assumed that the profile of the tumbling charge is independent of the degree of filling, which is generally not true. However, all this work led to the identification of so-called "equilibrium surface" which is the plane that separates the rotating charge into two regions. The inner region is static; here there is no motion relative to the mill shell. The other region is a shear region where either the balls flow down the surface of the charge (cascading motion), or are projected out of the surface and follow approximately parabolic paths (cataracting motion).

The ventilation of a mine is one of the key elements to a successful mining operation. It is, or should be, one of the primary concerns of the mining engineer at an underground mine. Too frequently, however, insufficient thought is given to future requirements. As a result, the mines suddenly find themselves with ventilation problems that cannot be corrected economically, or in short order, and have to suffer the consequences of being on the verge of having units shut down from time to time until the venlilaltion system can be improved. Insufficient ventilation in capital-intensive mining can cause production losses, the values of which far outweigh the significant costs of providing and operating an adequate ventilation plan. Many theories, and techniques in planning and control of underground ventilation systems have been developed over the years . It is the intent of this paper to point out some of the fundamental concepts, from the practical point of view, in the design and operation of a ventilation system, with special reference to underground mines using a room-and-pillar method.

San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. INTRODUCTION Gaudin (1), considered that "the mechanism of mineral collection is the central problem of flotation theory". From their work on adsorption phenomena in flotation for more than fifty years (2), Gaudin and his co-workers have made major contributions to the elucidation of this mechanism, a fact acknowledged by their contemporaries in the field (e.g. (3)). Their investigations in a number of areas, e.g. demonstrating that submonolayer quantities of adsorbed collector species can induce flotation, or identifying the influence of substances which can activate or depress (1), have helped to provide the basis for and the development of a theory to account for the interaction between mineral and collector. It was established in the late fifties (4) that the presence of oxygen is a prerequisite for the flotation of metal sulfides with thiol collectors. This fact rendered inadequate the concept of simple ion adsorption being responsible for rendering these minerals hydrophobic. The requirement for oxygen has been explained (1) in terms of this species being a component in chemical reactions between the sulfide surface and the collector. Gaudin has been instrumental in identifying the products of chemical reactions at sulfide minerals (1.5), a line of work which has been continued particularly by Finkelstein and co-workers in South Africa (6). The network of freight tunnels in Chicago consists of about 62 miles of horseshoeshaped tunnels constructed typically less than 50 feet below ground surface. These tunnels serve as repositories of much infrastructure and should remain serviceable. The tunnels are often impacted by adjacent excavations and the question arises as to the existing state of stress in the final liner. This paper discusses construction of these tunnels and presents the results of finite element analyses which were used to obtain ranges for axial forces and bending moments that have developed in the final liner of the freight tunnels since their construction.

The siting, grading and fill usage for leach pads are important aspects of leach pad design. A method is presented that optimizes the cut and fill quantities (i.e. minimizes the cost) required to grade a leach pad with parallel cells; given the desired pad characteristics of maximum and minimum pad slopes, maximum cut and fill depths, etc. and the cut and fill costs. The method allows the variation of the cut and fill costs with depth, which allows the accurate modeling of the cost savings practice of using cheaper fill towards the bottom of a thick fill. This optimization could be incorporated into a CAD package, enabling a designer to simply draw a desired pad shape on a site plan, input the pad and heap characteristics (required heap volume, heap height, heap sideslopes, etc.) and then have the computer report both the adequacy of the pad area and the optimum grading for the particular pad shape. Using this, a designer could quickly and accurately assess the optimum, or cheapest, grading of many shapes and positions for a leach pad. This would be especially useful for large pads that need to be sited on rough terrain.

Magma Copper Company's San Manuel SX-EW facility has operated since May, 1986. The original facility had a design capacity of 25,000 tons per year of electrowon copper cathode produced by processing pregnant leach solution from an open pit/heap leach operation. In 1988, the plant was expanded to 50,000 tons per year to incorporate processing in-situ leach solutions. This paper focuses primarily on the heap leaching area with regard to exploration, testing, feasibility, permitting, design and construction, and operating practices. Research utilizing surfactant leaching aids to enhance copper recovery is also discussed.

In Pennsylvania there are two distinct coal regions, bituminous and anthracite, in which the mining conditions and production trends are different. Bituminous mining is more mechanized, and production is increasing. This report is concerned specifically with the bituminous area. The bituminous coal industry apparently is facing a shortage of miners and mine officials which may become acute by 1970. Since 1949, when Pennsylvania had more than 100,000 bituminous coal miners, the number has steadily decreased. There are two principal reasons for the decrease of certified miners and mine officials. These reasons are the fact that apprentices are almost a thing of the past and the fact that the image of the coal miner is a poor one to people in general and to parents in particular. This has contributed greatly to the high average age of our miners today. The average age of all those employed in the mines is 50. Yet it is known that the progress in mine mechanization requires younger and more alert men to operate the newer type equipment.
