Vertical hoisting of materials using hoists and skips is common in the Mining Industry. These systems have a number of drawbacks, one being limited hoisting capacity at medium depths. FKC-Lake Shore and Metso Flexowell have been developing and installing vertical belts for medium depth shaft applications for many years, progressively going deeper whilst increasing belt capacity. The latest development from Metso the Pocketlift® belt advances this technology allowing higher tonnages to be lifted from greater depths. The design, manufacture, installation and operational experience of a 1818 tonnes capacity, 273 meters vertical lift Pocketlift® system at the White County Coal Pattiki 2 mine is the subject of this work.

INTRODUCTION Boom-type miners mechanize the cutting and loading of a solid face of rock having a compressive strength as high as 124 MPa (18,000 psi). These machines differ from continuous miners in that they can cut much harder rock for any given cutter-motor power. In addi¬tion, a boom miner is more flexible, selectively cutting any cross-sectional configuration from circular to square arched faces, 1.57-rad (90°) turns, and mixed faces. The basic operational concept of these machines, utilizing a rotary cutterhead mounted on a slewing boom, gained importance in Europe during the 1960s, where, due to their specialized use in roadway development in coal mines, they were called roadheaders. Along with continuous miners, boom miners share the ability to fully mechanize the cutting and loading of rock, while eliminating the need for explosives and the shattering and overbreaking of roof and rib rock that is normal with conventional mining methods. The machines are crawler-mounted and most have a gathering-arm load¬ing system that, moves the cut rock onto an internal chain conveyor, subsequently discharging the rock into a transport device such as a shuttle car or a bridge conveyor. Light- to medium-weight boom miners are cutting softer rocks and minerals successfully, including coal, shale, rock salt, potash, phosphate, weak sandstones (e.g., those associated with uranium ore), and other softer ores such as iron. Heavy third-generation ma¬chines have extended rock cutting to much harder ores such as borate, oil shale, and almost all rock associated with coal seams, except for the harder sandstones and limestones. The mention herein of specific manufacturers, brand names, or models is made by way of example only and does not constitute endorsement by the author or The Pennsylvania State University. All costs cited herein are in 1977 US dollars. TYPES OF BOOM MINERS All boom miners utilize drag bits fixed on a rotary cutterhead that is powered by an electric motor mounted in the slewing and elevating cutter boom. The cutter¬head is either a ripping or a milling type, and the machines have evolved through three generations (Boldt, 1977). As shown in Fig. 1, only one boom miner cur¬rently produced can use both ripping and milling cutter¬heads on one machine. Table 1 lists boom-miner models built in large num¬bers and/or successfully used or marketed in North America. Table I excludes machines of which only a few have been produced and none sold in North America, such as those manufactured by Demag, Eick¬hoff, Paurat, and Thyssen-Rheinstahl. The only Ameri¬can boom miners are the F-16 and Super ROC¬MINER"', manufactured by AEC, Inc., State College, PA. Machine Generations Three generations of boom miners can be distin¬guished according to their times of introduction, their rock-cutting abilities, and their weight classifications. Fig. 2 illustrates typical best-practice production rates possible from boom miners for selected cutter-motor power sizes (other power figures can be interpolated). Mining of molybdenum at Questa, New Mexico has been accomplished by block cave methods since August, 1983. As caving progresses, a periodic geologic evaluation is made of the rock-types present in finger raises on the Grizzly Level of the mine. The production maturity of the cave can be monitored by relating this data to geologic cross-sections through the ore body. The draw point mapping program is a simple and effective tool that is used in making draw control decisions at Questa.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION Electrostatic separation has found a number of applications since its initial installation as a processing method. Three broad types of electrostatic installations are discussed in order to provide a practical guide for three widely divergent uses of electrostatic separation. Only operating and installation data are covered in detail. A detailed technical treatment on the various types of electrostatic separation described in this paper can be found in the literature by F. S. Knoll, J. B. Taylor and J. E. Lawer.8, 9 ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION OF IRON ORE: WABDSH MINES, CANADA Introduction Electrostatic roll-type separator technology which had been in use in various forms since the 1920's evolved in the late 1940's when this separation process was developed and applied to the extraction of titanium bearing minerals from beach sands by J. H. Carpenter. Equipment design and industrial flowsheets developed for the recovery of rutile and ilmenite found new application in iron ore by chance in the year, 1956. From the time of the first beach sands plant, Carpco had developed other technology, gravity and magnetic separation to better serve the beach sands industry. It was in the fall of 1956 that an iron ore producer from the upper Michigan Peninsula sent a sample of jaspilite (fine-grained specular hematite in a jasper matrix) to Carpco's laboratory for the purpose of determining if a new high-intensity magnetic separator would be beneficial. Process Development W. P. Dyrenforth, while presenting a paper on the subject in the fall of 1957, recounts the laboratory tests. "High-intensity magnetic separators have been employed (for the beneficiation of iron ore) with some success and are still being investigated. Magnetic separation is a natural field of investigation, since iron and magnetism have been almost synonymous since ancient times. Introduction Cross borehole seismic tomography (CBST) is a geophysical technique that allows definition of the distribution of some physical rock property between two boreholes. The method is similar to the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) scans used by the medical industry. This paper describes the method, its applications and the developing trends in its use that interest the mining industry. The idea of using tomography in connection with geophysical methods for measuring rock properties between boreholes has been around for three or four decades. Until the advent of high-speed, large-capacity computers, the necessary calculations were too formidable for production use. Another factor in the development of the technique has been the refinement of a mathematical base to meet the needs of the medical industry. The geophysical applications have benefited from this refinement. An extensive discussion of the basic theory is given in Kak and Slaney (1988). CBST, although widely researched and written about, is still not extensively put to use in mining and engineering projects. Most real world examples in the literature have come from research carried out by government laboratories or by large companies. An exception is the regular use by Prospection Geophysique Francaise (Cottin et al., 1986) in damsite investigations. The Japanese appear to be doing extensive research and testing of CBST's uses in civil engineering projects (Saito et al., 1988). Canada is researching the use of the method in connection with nuclear waste site investigations (Wong et al., 1987). Finland has tested the method in connection with a foundation investigation for a nuclear power plant (Cosma et al., 1984). In the US, the US Bureau of Mines has taken an interest in using CBST as a means to enhance in situ mining operations (Tweeton, 1988). Major oil companies are examining the method as a tool in oil field development (Justice et al., 1989). Description of the method CBST involves placing a series of receivers down one borehole and recording transmissions from an energy source placed successively at a series of positions in another hole. The objective is to generate a dense network of seismic raypaths between the holes. The denser the network of raypaths, the better the features between the boreholes are resolved. Either seismic travel times or sine wave amplitudes are measured by the receivers. Analysis of travel times between boreholes develops a picture of rock velocities between the holes. Analysis of seismic wave amplitudes develops a picture of the distribution of energy transmission characteristics between the holes. These seismic properties can be used to define occurrences of fracture zones, lenticular sequences or other important geologic data not apparent from examination of the borehole logs. When longitudinal (compressional) and transverse (shear) waves are analyzed, the physical properties, such as elastic moduli, can also be mapped. When wave amplitudes are measured, rather extensive corrections to the data are necessary. There is some disagreement among researchers as to the feasibility of making some of the corrections. For this reason, this paper will concentrate primarily on travel time analysis. Wave amplitude analysis will be mentioned occasionally only in passing. This does not mean that amplitude analysis does not provide important data on rock parameters, only that for the present there are limitations on its uses. Vertical seismic profiling (VSP), extensively used in recent years in oil exploration, is similar to CBST. Instead of using two boreholes, however, the VSP method uses an array of seismic sources or detectors down one hole and an array of detectors or sources along the surface radiating outward from the hole. While adequate for determining vertical velocity distributions, the VSP method is not, by itself, suitable for most engineering or mining projects. In the mid-1970's a major new prospect was proved in a previously unworked region of North East Leicester- shire, United Kingdom. Preliminary estimates from borehole information showed over 500 million tonnes of recoverable reserves. A special Planning Team was set up, to co-ordinate the work for the two local Areas, South Nottinghamshire and South Midlands (management of production of the UK National Coal Board is organised in twelve such Areas). The team was led by one of the authors as Deputy Director, Mining, North East Leicestershire Prospect (NELP). The remit imposed by the National Coal Board was to analyse the possible options of number, location and eventual rates of output of shaft or drift access; to select a recommended alternative in the light of geological, mining, topographical and environmental considerations; and prepare submissions in accordance with standard Board practice on major projects - such submissions including detailed engineering design, financial appraisal, and full risk assessment. To assist the Planning Team, surface and underground consult- ant engineers were appointed to prepare feasibility studies of specific civil and engineering problems.

The Annacis Island Outfall Project includes two TBM bored tunnels with face pressures above 3.5 bar, with an internal diameter of 4.2 metres. This paper discusses the innovative approach to TBM tunnelling and TBM design at the Annacis Outfall Project. The TBM custom design includes a 3.6 m OD core machine manufactured by Herrenknecht and a 5.0 m add-on by the Contractor (Bessac), acting as an extension kit, with optimized gantry design to accommodate for short tunnel drives and quicker launches. This novel design approach produced safety improvement, cost and schedule savings while streamlining logistics of TBM retrieval.

9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition

The oxidants which participate in the bacterially catalyzed oxidation of minerals are dissolved oxygen and some aqueous iron(III) complexes. Speciation studies indicate that these complexes consist of iron (III) -sulfate and iron (III) -arsenate ions. The complexes have different oxidizing powers as indicated by their calculated standard reduction potentials. The thermodynamics of the oxidations of pyrite and arsenopyrite are related to the mechanisms of the reactions. The mechanisms are discussed in terms of primary processes occurring on the mineral surfaces and the secondary reactions of the primary products. The importance of the conclusions to plant operation is discussed.

"CURRENT BASIS OF GROUND SUPPORT DESIGN ANALYSIS The current strategy used in determining what kinds of support are needed is based on empirical design charts (Grimstad and Barton, 1993). Figure 1 is an example of the topcut analysis used for a 14 foot wide (4.3 meter) drift, which is the current design width used for topcuts at TRJV mine. The majority of our topcuts are situated in ore of the Type IV and Type III weak rock class categories that necessitate the use of bolts, mesh and 2”-4” of shotcrete. This type of empirical chart gives excellent guidelines for the kinds of support, and it is based on case histories of civil tunneling and mining properties. It is a good starting point for determining the kinds of support needed, but not to the detail needed to optimize the number of bolts, type of mesh, or combination of types or strengths of shotcrete. This report is an attempt to help quantify the safety factor and optimum design parameters to include mesh and shotcrete as part of the design criteria and subsequent safety factor.SAFETY FACTOR ANALYSIS: BOLTS ONLY One type of safety factor analysis used at TRJV for the past 7 years is described as the “dead weight” method, developed by Pakalnis (2008). It involves the support of a conservative “dead weight” of rock held in place by bolts in which the depth of failure is approximated as a wedge whose height is one-half of the span. The failure or dead weight wedge resembles a triangular wedge that must be supported by the remainder of the bolts going through the wedge (see Figure 2).The support capacity of the system is determined by the bond strength of the bolts holding up the wedge, which is in turn based on the RMR. The method assumes the total support capacity is the sum of the individual bolt values defined by either the breaking strength or the bond strength of the bolts (whichever is lower) passing through the failure surface."

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) recently initiated the Front Range Infrastructure Resources Project. This is a multidisciplinary study along the Rocky Mountain Front Range from Pueblo, Colorado, to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and is designed to collect, compile, and analyze new and existing data on natural aggregate (stone, sand, and gravel), as well as water, and energy resources. To identify aggregate resources in the Front Range, a 1:500,000-scale reconnaissance map showing locations and quality of both bedrock and surficial sources of natural aggregate in the Front Range urban corridor was prepared by processing the digital geologic maps of Colorado and Wyoming. The first step of the process was to identify map units as either bedrock or unconsolidated material. Bedrock was classified according to type (i.e., limestone, granite, gneiss, etc.), which in turn was classified based on the suitability of the bedrock for use as crushed stone. Unconsolidated materials were classified according to relative age, with the older, more weathered materials being defined as less suitable for use as aggregate than younger materials. As a spin-off from the Front Range Project, the techniques developed for analyzing the Front Range geology have been modified and expanded to include all of Colorado and New Mexico. More detailed digital aggregate maps (1:24,000 scale) are being prepared in collaboration with the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS). Maps from the CGS "Atlas of Sand, Gravel and Quarry Aggregate Resources, Colorado Front Range Counties" show the distribution of potential resources of sand and gravel and provide general information about the physical properties of the resources. These maps are being digitized and merged into a single Geographic Information System (GIS) data base. In addition, the project is adding more specific information to the maps about deposit thickness, volume, and quality. This additional information is being obtained through field-characterization studies and modeling activities. The GIs data base can be displayed and queried using off-the-shelf software such as ArcInfo?, ArcView?, and Map Professional?. In addition, the USGS is developing a decision-support system to assist users in analyzing various land-use options on resource availability.

Additional progress in comminution can be achieved if the compressive crushing principle commonly used at present is changed to one where particles are fragmented by the tensile growth of preexisting internal flaws or cracks, under internal waterjet pressure. This idea was studied in a number of tests and generated results and conclusions are the subject of this paper. It covers tests with different jets imposed on rock samples during compressive load as well as without any loading.

In recent years, the diminishing supply of natural gas has led energy suppliers and consumers to consider making synthetic natural gas from coal. A number of processes have been devised to produce gas from coal; many of these have been operated at the pilot stage and some have been operated commercially. Each process has specific coal feed stock requirements with respect to size consist and moisture content. The purpose of this presentation is to compare the estimated costs for coal handling, live storage, size reduction and drying facilities that would be required for delivery of coal feedstock to different gasification processes.

"Mining plays a key role in the development of modern civilization as a source of essential raw materials and provider of essential fuels, producer of jobs and a factor in support of the international balance of monetary payment (Camm, 2014). Professionals in mining locate, develop, design and manage ore deposits in an environmentally safe and profitable manner. As mineral deposits become increasingly scarce, new challenges face the industry. A current trend is to an increased emphasis on underground mining techniques for deeper deposits. Operations are safer now than before as companies understand better their work environment and the importance of mining responsibly.A continual challenge for the industry is accurately reflecting the costs and selling price of ore. An enduring characteristic of mining is the situation where the market typically determines the price of a commodity; the main control a company has on the bottom line is to control the cost of production.An attempt to bring light and clarity to the cost of their business will give a better idea to investors on the true profitability of the mining business. Gold producers face this struggle to accurately reflect the cost of production while also seeking to attract the interest of the investment community (Hill, 2013). In order to have a consistent format to report on their production costs, leading gold producers, through their alliance inside the World Gold Council (WGC), worked on the adoption of a new cost framework: the all-in sustaining cost (AISC) and all-in cost (AIC).Since 1996, the traditional cash cost reporting has focused only on the mining and processing costs incurred in mining an ounce of gold, which included the costs of goods sold (labor, energy, and consumables costs) and royalties (Table 1). But cash cost reporting ignores many important aspects, like sustaining capital, general and administrative expenses and site rehabilitation at the end of the mine life (Whelan, 2013). The cash cost was used to attract many investors into the business. In fact, the high gross margin (sales minus cash costs) has been promoted in past decades by the industry instead of the net or operating margin. As a result, even when the gold price was high, nearly $61/g ($1,900/oz) in August 2011, gold producers were not reporting excessive profits in their cash flow/income statements, to the disappointment and incomprehension of investors (Milstead, 2014). The truth was simply that the other costs omitted in the traditional cash cost were reducing the apparent profits.The disconnect led to a need for more accurate cost reporting in order to win back investor confidence and provide better understanding of gold mining economics. In 2012, the senior gold mining companies, including Gold Fields, Barrick Gold Corp. and Newmont Mining Corp., worked with the WGC to develop a new measure. This resulted in the June 2013 publication of the new framework AISC and AIC, which has been widely embraced by the sector since Jan. 1, 2014 (WGC, 2013).The adoption of the new cost template would have the dilemma of showing the real profitability of gold mine properties, which might alleviate taxes from governments and legislators, but it might also scare off investors toward more lucrative industries if not winning back their confidence."

In open-pit mines, the long-term production scheduling optimization problem (LTPSOP) is a complicated problem that contains constraints, large datasets and uncertainties. Due to its dimensions and NP-hard nature, it is usually difficult to find an ideal solution to the LTPSOP. The optimal schedule generally restricts the ore, metal and waste tonnages, average grades, and cash flows of each period. In this paper, to synthesize grade uncertainty into the strategic schedule, a stochastic integer programming (SIP) framework is presented to LTPSOP. The objective function of the SIP model is to maximize the net present value and minimize the risk of deviation from the production targets considering grade uncertainty simultaneously while satisfying all technical constraints and operational requirements. Instead of applying one estimated orebody model as input to optimize the production schedule, a set of equally probable orebody realizations is applied to synthesize grade uncertainty in the strategic schedule and produce a more profitable and riskbased production schedule. To solve the LTPSOP, the hybrid approach with the augmented Lagrangian relaxation method, the Harris Hawks optimization, the Random Forest method and Monte Carlo method was proposed. To indicate the applicability of the model, a case study on a gold mine was implemented. The framework displays the capability to minimize risk and improvement in the expected net present value and financial profitability .

Precambrian granitic pegmatites on the west, south west, south and southeast slopes of Storm Mountain, Larimer County, northern Colorado, were explored and mapped geologically 1956-1959. The area between Crystal Mountain Mining District on the north and Hyatt pegmatite mine area on the south was nearly inaccessible until a company built an access road, which was completed in 1959, into Roosevelt National Forest and its jeep-type roads. The area is extremely rugged, rising from some 6,000 feet on the highway at Drake, on Big Thompson River, to an altitude of over 10,000 feet at the summit ridge of Storm Mountain. Almost innumerable pegmatites of every possible type of granitic pegmatite intrusion infest the Precambrian gneisses and schists of the southwest-tilted fault block of Storm Mountain. The major bodies stand at least 100 to 200, feet high above the surrounding forest floor. Core drilling has shown that some extend to at least 200 feet below the surface. They blunt out at the southwest, some keel out below and others are faulted out at their southwest ends. Strike length ranges from 200 to 600 feet. The massive bulky bodies have nearly vertical walls. Contents are zoned or ribboned and layered. They consist of local commercial bodies of beryl, potash feldspar, mica, uranium minerals and quartz. As yet no lithium minerals have been encountered.

Novel and innovative mining methods are attracting the attention of mining engineers at an unprecedented level. Historically, the US mining industry has responded rather conservatively to new technology. The financial difficulties affecting the domestic mining industry in the early 1980s changed attitudes toward new technology. The market contraction during that period, coupled with an expanding world mine capacity, created a serious oversupply of many raw mineral products. Many mining companies found that retaining a share of world markets while making a profit required drastic cost-cutting measures.

The Stillwater Mining Company, a partnership of The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. and Manville Corporation, began commercial production of flotation concentrates from the western hemispheres' only primary platinum palladium deposit at Nye, Montana in March 1937. In the fall of 1987 an integrated pilot plant testing campaign of electric furnace smelling and oxygen? blown converting confirmed the feasibility of further upgrading to semi? refined matte or 'white metal". In the summer of 1990 the production smelter was brought on-line at Columbus, Montana. This paper describes the technology transfer from the pilot to the production smelter. Emphasis is placed on flowsheet development and the scale factors between the test and production furnaces and gas cleaning plants. The metallurgical results of the pilot plant and of the early months of production of the commercial works are also compared.
