Mining at Phoenix is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza Pits, at a combined rate of approximately 110,000 tons per day. A portion of the ore bodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid to late 1800?s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza Pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This paper presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.

INTRODUCTION In uranium miners, a causal relationship between exposure of the lung to high levels of alpha radiation and the consequential induction of bronchial carcinoma is now well-established (Wagoner, et al., 1965). Quantitation of this cause-effect association presents considerable difficulty, however, as the result of various confounding factors such as the contributing effects of smoking and/or arsenic exposure (Archer, Gillam, and Wagoner, 1976), normal metabolic variability and, perhaps most important of all, the absence of accurate radon/radon daughter exposure data. Estimates of cumulative lung exposures suffer from inaccuracy due to critical factors such as 1) unknown ventilation rates; 2) difficulties in obtaining representative mine air samples; 3) the variable character and magnitudes of the exposure sources; and 4) specific differences in metabolism and job histories that exist among miners. It was with considerable enthusiasm, therefore, that investigators readily embraced the idea of using skeletal burdens of the relatively longlived descendants of radon and its short-lived daughters, i.e., 210 Pb and 210Po (Archer, et al., 1968), to provide a measure of cumulative past exposure wherein the body acts as an integrating dosimeter. Early studies considered excretion rates of 210Pb and 210Po in urine, blood and hair (Sultzer and Hursh, 1954; Black, et al., 1968; Jaworowski, 1965; Bell and Gilliland, 1964) as well as their concentrations in bone samples, if and when they became available (Blanchard, Archer, and Saccomanno, 1969). These methods were ultimately complemented by in vivo, whole-body counting techniques using low background, NaI-Csl(T1) detectors (Eisenbud, et al., 1969). By this latter method, it would be possible to measure the skeletal burden of 210Pb directly, thereby avoiding the many difficulties associated with the relation between nuclide excretion rates and body burden. The rationale was simple; by knowing the skeletal burden of 210Pb it should be possible, by the judicious use of an applicable metabolic model, to estimate the cumulative lung exposure to alpha-emitting radon daughters (Fig. 1). Various models that were consequently constructed, however (Fisher, 1969), all suffered from the same limitation, i.e., the assumption that the source of 210 Pb in the skeleton and the source of lung exposure to the short-lived radon daughters were simply related and, if not, were at [ ] least not too variable (Raabe, 1970). By now, the difficulty with this assumption has been recognized and more sophisticated modeling techniques have been attempted which presumably present a more realistic picture of exposure conditions (Holtzman and Rundo, 1981). There is, nevertheless, the pessimistic view that due to the variety and variability (in time as well as in character) of sources that may exist for the origin of 210Pb in bone, it may [never] be possible to estimate past lung exposures accurately by an indirect, predictive model. For example, the origin of 210 Pb in the skeleton may include such sources as: 1) the decay of short-lived 222Rn daughters, inhaled and ingested; 2) the decay of 222Rn dissolved in body fluids and tissues; 3) directly from 210 Pb present in air, inhaled and ingested; and 4) 210Pb from non-occupational sources, e.g., food, water, smoking and endogenous 226Ra. The contribution of each of these sources may vary depending upon specific site conditions such as ventilation and mining operation. In a complex society such as ours, the range of "negotiating" relationships is constantly increasing. These negotiating relationships have emerged as a direct result of the diffusion of power or influence to new sectors and emerging concerns. Even within organizations, the myth of the authority-based heirarchical structure has given way to the reality of constant negotiations between superior and subordinate and with peers in the organizational structure. In the broader context, the corporate organization finds it necessary to reckon and often negotiate with organized employees, suppliers, buyers, government agencies and a range of organized private interests ranging from minority groups to environmental organizations. In response to this diffusion of power and the conflicts which it has engendered, a variety of conflict avoidance, conflict managing or conflict resolution techniques has developed. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to differentiate between some of the conflict intervention approaches which have appeared "on the market", and to suggest three bases for selecting among them: 1. The "role" of the conflict intervenor; 2. How far the conflict has developed; and 3. The breadth and impact of the issues involved.

The successful exploration for Austin Taylor and Gen. McRae from 1931 to 1940 obscured the fact that I was reaching a period of transition. This was true both in personal and business life. It was probably fortunate that I did not realize how great a change must come after I passed the age of 50. In the personal life of our family the change came when both our children left home to go to school or college. This made home a different place and, because of the absence of the children, Dorothy could devote much of her time and attention to the art she loved so well. She could spend long periods in New York, the center of the nation's art life. Vacations at Tahoe and long pleasure trips made the separation from the children less disturbing but it could never again be the same as it had been in the first 20 years of our marriage. The change In my business life was just as complete, though a little more gradual. While work for Bralorne and General McRae made the "bite" of the Great Depression less painful for us than it was for most consultants and their families, the fact that I was getting older made a new sort of work inevitable. I was 50 years old and the total grew rapidly. Planes and automobiles that made travel easier even in the wilds of Alaska and northern Canada still made it possible for me to look at new prospects, but increasingly often I was exhausted at the end of a day's climb and, if the nature of my work did not change there would soon be no more work. Fortunately work of a new sort came a little at a time. As I became a director of Bralorne and president of its American subsidiaries I had to take on more administrative work, and success of these operations made others want to employ me to help direct policy and value mines. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. A comparison of analytical models used to describe deposition in the first generation of lung bifurcations is presented. In order to allow testing of the mathematical models, experimental data were obtained from radon daughter deposition in simplified lung bifurcations. The experimental data for particles deposited by diffusional mechanisms is best described by the assumption of a thin concentration boundary layer at the entrance of a right circular tube. Other more complex models do not accurately describe the deposition of submicron particles. The angle of bifurcation was found to have a minor effect on deposition.

Matching the productivity gains of continuous mining machines with the increasing performance levels achieved by longwall units has required creative thinking to assure that development is completed in time for uninterrupted longwall production. By using management information systems to coordinate support operations, the most productive planning decisions can be made. This paper focuses on the role of computer technology tools in achieving improved productivity from both longwall and continuous miner sections. The primary emphasis is on the planning process and the methodology developed to guarantee the best allocation of management and manpower resources.

Hydraulic tailings fill in the Butte deep level mines was based upon studies made in 1958 by the Anaconda Company Mining Research Department, which published Bulletin No. 35, entitled "Hydraulic Stope Filling". Since then, many things have changed. At the time of the Research Departments study, dry mine tailings were hauled by rail cars from the Anaconda tailings ponds, twenty-five miles distant, to the underground mines' tailings fill plants at the Leonard Anselmo, and Mt. Con Mines. Now, with the installation of the new Weed Concentrator in Butte, tailings is delivered by pipeline to a cyclone at the Kelley Shaft, and stope filling has become more highly automated and streamlined. Presently, mill tailings at approximately thirty percent solids by weight, is pumped from the concentrator, eight thousand feet horizontally and upward, to the Kelley Fill Plant, where they are dewatered and deslimed by three Krebs Model D20B Cyclones, which discharge the material into the cased and grouted mine delivery bore holes at desired densities up to seventy percent solids. The vertical boreholes and four-inch rubber lined Victaulic pipe carry the material downward to horizontal distribution lines, which in turn tap into the stops-filling, three inch, unlined steel Victaulic pipelines. The slurry may travel several thousand feet before it finally discharges into the stope, where it lends support to the mined-out area.

The scavenger circuit, featuring its own motor control center, air blower, multiple reagent loops and FrothSense+™ camera, operates both mechanically and chemically to maximize copper recovery and under expert control. Such scavenger features can be applied to zinc rougher circuits for all Doe Run mills to maximize Cu recovery during Cu special runs when the zinc rougher becomes a copper rougher scavenger.

Gentlemen : My object reads "Longwall Rapid Advance of Coal Mining in the Federal Republic of Germany". It is true that the percentage of coal obtained in your country from longwall faces, with at present 1.2, is still rather low, but it increased considerably since 1966 with 0.4 %. The coal mines of the Federal Republic of Germany ever used longwall as the classical method of coal getting. All attempts to introduce bord and pillar mining did not lead to any wider application of this method. The principal reasons, for this appear to have been: - the deeper depth of our workings, - the wish to keep working losses as low as possible and to utilize the deposits opened up by deep and therefore expensive shafts to the furthest possible degree, - the dense sequence of seams and the mutual influencing of the working points, - the high number of disturbances in the geologically much stressed deposits, - and the necessary considerations to the protection of the densely built-upon surface.

Laboratory and field scale kinetic testing was conducted to evaluate scaling up of laboratory data. Two 20- tonne (field) cells were monitored for internal temperature, pH, conductivity, volume and rate of flow, and water quality. On a surface are. basis, results showed sulfide oxidation rates obtained using 50-kg cells are more sensitive to changes in aeration than those from 1-kg cells. Correcting the laboratory oxidation rates for field temperatures with a pH 7 activation energy, which is in the field drainage pH range, returned oxidation rates an order of magnitude lower than the field cell rates.

The work of engineers responsible for the design and performance of mine facilities is often challenged by economic and practical constraints in the field. Problems have developed in implementing design criteria dictated by persons or agencies not familiar with the dynamic nature of mine engineering. Regional and site-specific conditions frequently require changes to standard designs, or the use of a completely innovative approach, which is not provided for in the regulations. The implementation of engineering design, therefore, usually requires a hard-sell approach to management and regulatory agencies that allows for a happy-medium to all parties concerned. Flexibility on the part of the regulatory agencies is needed to solve operational and environmental problems with sound engineering. Typical hydrologic issues which will be discussed fall in the following general categories: ? Design criteria for sizing water control structures (i.e., culverts, diversion and sedimentation ponds, ditches, etc.) ? Implementation (construction and operation) difficulties ? Regulatory compliance ? Reclamation planning with hydrologic considerations ? Protection of groundwater resources

I work as the Bureau's Liaison Officer for Colorado and am one of 38 Bureau employees who are stationed, for the most part, in state capitals across the nation. These offices serve all 50 states and Puerto Rico--some being assigned more than one state. Our primary task is to seek ways to achieve a closer and more productive relationship between State agencies and the Bureau of Mines. In 1970, when the Bureau initiated this nationwide system, our activities were limited to mineral supply operations. The potential of the program was soon recognized and Liaison Officers became the personal representatives of the Director and responsible for con- ducting the business of the Bureau that is best handled at the local level. Knowledgeable in the total operations of the Bureau, Liaison Officers are a primary point of contact for the public and for you to obtain information and, again, for you to provide the government with insight into the difficulties you have in providing this nation with an adequate supply of industrial mineral materials.

"INTRODUCTION The Crossrail project provides an East-West link across London enabling an additional 200 million journeys each year linking up major business centres and existing transportation interchanges, while reducing congestion at street level and within the current underground system. The project has built major structures in Sprayed Concrete Linings (SCL), including 5 new stations, 6 crossover caverns and numerous passages, adits and ventilation tunnels. Construction has taken approximately 4 years, and has involved the spraying of over 200,000m3 of concrete. At the start of the project there was a lack of available records from previous projects concerning concrete falls, which hindered risk assessments and the ability to make meaningful comparisons around spraying or material performance. This paper redresses this lack of data by providing information on falls experienced on this project and makes recommendations to assist future projects. Construction Methods Table 1 below summarises the main contracts with elements of permanent SCL. The listed primary lining lengths include pilot tunnels, side drift tunnels and enlargements as separate tunnels.A range of construction sequences were used in order to deal with the design requirements, geometry, and the ground and ground water conditions. The following briefly summarises the build up by layers, with typical design dimensions provided for a platform sized tunnel (approximately 9m internal diameter), excluding tolerance allowances. Some linings were sprayed in more than one layer to allow for inclusion of reinforcement layers or to avoid a too aggressive build-up of thickness: •,Initial shotcrete, or sealing, layer (ISL) of 75mm followed by a Primary Lining (PL) of 300mm. •,Regulating layer of 40mm followed by a Waterproof membrane (Sprayed membrane, 3-6mm). •,Secondary lining (SL) of 250mm with a separate sprayed fire protection layer (FPL) of 50mm."

The present interest in large diameter grinding mills and the rapidly rising cost of the drive in proportion to the cost of the mill establishes a need to explore the drive system in detail. The drive for a seven to eight thousand horsepower mill will cost from 1350 thousand to $600 thousand which represents nearly half the total cost of the mill package, and requires as much building space as the mill proper. Some of the drive components require a longer time to manufacture and the installation time and costs are equal to those for the mill. It is apparent that the drive has become a dominant factor in the overall mill design consideration. A new plant requires a tremendous investment in both time and money. With the high degree of competition in the mining industry, low capital cost is an exceedingly important factor in the development of a project. It is just as important, however, to insure that the equipment is going to perform satisfactorily for the anticipated life of the project without adding unplanned operating, maintenance and replacement costs. This is the position in which the engineer or designer usually finds himself and is really one of his primary functions -- establishing a realistic compromise between cost and performance.

"The construction of 6.3 km long central part of 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 (7 stations - out of which three 25m deep stations - built using cut and cover method; two single-track tunnels constructed using four EPB TBMs as well as a short NATM section with soil freezing below the existing road tunnel). Central section of the 2nd metro line was opened to public after verification and testing in March 2015. Design and build tender for the extension of this line in East (three stations) and West direction (three stations) was announced with total length of running tunnels – approx. 5 km. Detailed description of a very complex geotechnical context, different construction methods, challenges encountered and solved during construction and finally lessons learnt on this interesting project are presented in the paper. DESCRITPTION OF THE PROJECT Introduction The very first concept plan of the metro system in Warsaw was designed several years after regaining independence by Poland in 1918. In 1929, following the geotechnical survey, design works begun, but the economic crisis of the 1930s stopped it. After a few years of break, in 1938 a coherent concept of the metro network was proposed to be implemented in phases over the next 35 years. In total, construction of 46 kilometers of metro, including 31 km of tunnels and 15 km on surface, was planned. Unfortunately, World War 2 made the implementation of those plans impossible. In the post-war period several metro designs were elaborated, but none except one was scheduled for implementation. Construction of the 1st, 23.1 km long, North-South line commenced in 1983 and finished in 2008 (Sieminska-Lewandowska et all. 2009). Nowadays, Warsaw covers the area of 517 km2 and, according to year 2014 statistical data, the city has much more than 1.7 million inhabitants. Only one operating metro line is not sufficient for such a populated city. Up-to-date metro plan, shown on Figure 1, includes also 30.5 km long 2nd metro line. It’s route is divided into four sections: Western Section with the length of approx. 9.2 km and 9 stations, Central Section with the length of 6.3 km and 7 stations, North-East Section with the length of 7.7 km and 6 stations, South-East Section with the length of 7.1 km and 6 stations. The construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 and its operation started in March 2015. The paper focuses on challenges encountered and solved and lessons learnt during construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw."

Iran was a lodestone for the attention of industrial countries and companies wanting to share in its industrial development during the last two decades and particularly after 1972. Prior to 1972, most industrial projects in the private sector were on a relatively small scale and could be carried out in reasonably orderly fashion in spite of limitations of a primitive infrastructure and meager indigenous supply of managerial and technical skills. People with these skills could be found but not in abundance, and many of them were total¬ly engaged in various government ministries and projects. Thus it was that nearly all private sector industries, even long-established ones, required one or more foreigners to give guidance. A barite mine and processing facility was brought on line by Dresser Industries in 1960 without serious operational problems. A few expatriate experts were able to select and train a stable group of staff and production people and establish sound management principles for continued growth. The huge and increasing oil revenues after 1973 gave superficial credence to ideas of the Iranian government that the country could easily finance the jump into the industrial 20th century. All necessary skills and equipment not available in Iran would be imported, and intensive training programs would prepare Iranians for operating the new facilities. Large projects for steel production, copper production, oil refining, petrochemical production, cement production, and others were started or expanded. These are basic industries that consume substantial quantities of refractories. Studies made in 1972 indicated that the existing industries plus expanded and new projects scheduled to come into production would lead to a market sufficiently large to justify a refractory producing plant. Concurrent studies of raw material sources showed that clay, the largest tonnage item, would be locally available; the other raw materials would be imported. Iran Refractories Company (IREFCO) was founded in 1973 and started production in 1976.

When the subject of plant computers is brought up most people visualize the computer's controlling the entire plant with very little operator intervention. Actually, this picture is true today in only a limited number of cases and will certainly not be true in the minerals industries for many years to come. There are several ways in which a plant computer can significantly contribute to improving plant operation and closed loop control is only one of these. First of all, what are the basic ingredients for good plant control? For good plant control, two requirements must be met. First, the operator must get good information feedback from the process and then he must know what action to take in response to this information. Control information can be obtained through instruments, laboratory analyses, or through simple visual observation. If it is timely and accurate and the operator knows how to use it, then we have the makings of a good plant control system. The computer can be of help in both these areas by getting good data back to the operator and in helping to develop a good control scheme for the plant.
