Located approximately 50 miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee, Short Mountain Silica mines the Clinch Formation, an orthoquarzite, for silica sand. In 1980, a Knoxville resident and area contractor visualized mining Short Mountain for silica sand. Because APG Industries, the main market for the glass sand product, was only 48 kilometers from the site, many silica sand companies became interested in the property. In 1986, J.D. Nicewonder began to develop the site, and in May of 1988, APG Industries received the first sand shipment.

It is not uncommon for overall quality of coal from a mine to deteriorate as the mine is developed or for an improved-quality coal specification to be imposed during the life of the mine. Either of these conditions typically results in management pressuring mine personnel to take greater care in delineating the seam from top and bottom rock. When mining and seam conditions require a portion of the seam to be removed to ensure sufficient rock is removed to meet the quality specification, physical-coal cleaning may become economically competitive with in-pit seam grooming. The additional cost of coal cleaning may, in some cases, be justified by permitting higher recovery of the coal seam than is possible when cleaning the seam with excavators in the pit. This paper compares projected coal cleaning results with present in-pit grooming techniques and reports the economic results.

Cortez Gold Mine (C.G.M.) is located in Lander County, Nevada, approximately 80 miles southwest of Elko, Nevada. It is accessed via Nevada State Highway 306 south from Interstate 80. This operation is a joint venture between Placer Dome U. S. Inc. (60% operator) and Kennecott Corporation (40%). The claims which supply oxide and refractory ore feed to the Cortez milling facility are located in both Lander and Eureka Counties. These include the Cortez and Horse Canyon deposits all operated by C.G.M. Joint Venture. Other deposits outside the C.G.M. claim area include; Fire Creek, Buckhorn, Gold Bar and Tonkin Springs. These deposits all occur along the Battle Mountain/Eureka Trend.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted copper exchange capacity (CuEC) tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the CuEC as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Further testing resulted in regression equations expressing CuEC's of Na and Ca montmorillonites and attapulgite as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and the concentration of metal ions which compete with Cu for exchange sites. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall copper recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of copper from in situ leaching solutions. Copper losses are decreased by the presence of competing ions, and A1 and Mg have the largest impact of those ions normally present in Cu leaching solutions.

Over 100 saprolite samples from Turkey Hill Gold Mine, Lumpkin County, Georgia, were analyzed (-80 mesh) for As, Au, and Sb. Maximum values are 16.2 ppm As, 7.9 ppm Au, and 29.1 ppm Sb. Results show trace element content of saprolite varies with topography: ridge top samples show a pronounced decrease in Au and Sb, and to a lesser degree in As, whereas, slope and valley samples have anomalous Au and Sb concentrations, with no discernable pattern for As. Statistical analysis shows strong correlation between Au and Sb and none between Au and As. This study will serve as a model for gold exploration in deeply weathered terrains with variable relief.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. Economically important heavy minerals have been studied in the sediments of offshore Alabama and Mississippi. Sandy samples have been collected from a 200 square mile area from Dauphin to Horn Islands. The minerals concentrate in sediments under 10-35 feet of water and may reach 2.4% by weight. The distribution of total heavies is related to the hydrodynamics of offshore Alabama-Mississippi; the greatest concentrations are in the Gulf where the longshore current is diverted from its westerly flow. Preliminary observations indicate that the distribution of individual minerals can be correlated with wave energy, particle size, specific gravity, and morphology of the mineral grains. The coarser, lighter minerals--kyanite, sillimanite and staurolite--are concentrated in relatively low energy areas in the Mississippi Sound and at the end of Dauphin Island in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each is 34.5%, 6.0% and 43.2%, respectively, of the heavy minerals. The smaller, more denseminerals--ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite--are concentrated in high energy areas in the Gulf; maximum concentration for each, respectively, is 42.0%, 5.9%, 9.652, 10.7% and 1.3% of the heavy minerals. On the basis of a minimum concentration of 1% heavy minerals, two areas have been identified and the total amounts of different minerals have been calculated to a depth of 25 feet of sediment. The data are preliminary and in no way indicate recoverable reserves, but they do show that on the order of 20 million tons of heavies exist. These deposits should be termed "indicated resources".

Thin aqueous equilibrium film studies and surface tension measurements on a mixed surfactant system consisting of polyethylene oxide (a model frother) and potassium ethyl xanthate (a model collector) enable the interaction between the two surfactants at the air/solution interface to be elucidated. For the film containing the non-ionic frother, the interface was charged and addition of low concentrations of xanthate acted as a common electrolyte and reduced the thickness of the film inducing rupture. However, at high xanthate collector concentrations, the negative charge xanthate was found to interact with the non-ionic and caused a build-up of negative charge at the air/solution. Higher frother concentrations were necessary to produce non-rupturing thin films upon increasing the xanthate concentration.

Acid consumption in copper heap leaching is determined by the minerals present in the ore. Gangue minerals such as biotite and chlorite consume acid together with copper-bearing minerals such as chrysocolla and malachite. Acid consumption is affected by the rate of acid application and the particle size. Some gangue minerals undergo alterations and cause precipitate formation during acid leaching. Other minerals form due to precipitation as dissolved ion concentrations from a variety of mineral sources combine to exceed saturation levels. Copper recovery is related to all of these events. This study presents information on acid consumption of various gangue minerals as well as data for copper recovery from an associated copper ore.

In the production of Pig Iron - Limestone, Coke and Iron Ore pellets are changed to the blast furnace and reacted at approximately 2,800 degrees F. The resultant products are molten iron and a molten slag - not unlike lava. The molten slag stream is channeled into open pits, cooled with water, crushed and sized for various industrial applications. The production of steel from pig iron in open hearth, B0P, BOF and electric furnaces results in somewhat similar slags: but since free lime is normally the flux, the resultant slags are not satisfactory for use in cement pastes. When exposed to water, the lime slakes, expands by 250% and ruptures the concrete. Thus, the slag discussed first is Blast Furnace Slag composed of 30 to 40% Silica (SiO2) Alumina (AL202) 7 to 16% Lime (CaO) 32 to 45% and Magnesia (MgO) 5 to 15%. The oxides do not exist as free oxides but rather as silicates and alumino silicates which are chemicall inert. Since transportation costs limit the area of use, blast furnace slag can only be found in concrete products produced within 60 to 100 miles of a blast furnace operation. Even within these areas where slag is in heavy supply, quite often the use of slag is minimal for concrete aggregate and the major outlet is road base.

As noted by McKinstry (1948), "How to deal with erratic high samples is one of the knottiest problems in ore estimation." He described a variety of approaches and methods to alleviate the problem through the averaging and weighing of assay data and by "cutting" or "clipping" of the erratic assays. Bird (1991) elaborated on ways of dealing with the nugget effect (erratics). He listed several procedures for cutting. Bird's list has been reproduced and/or added to by several authors including Vallee (1992) and Stone and Dunn (1993). Missing from each of these otherwise excellent reviews is a definition, description or guideline to recognition of an "erratic," or just where or when cutting is warranted or justified.

In many cases the roof strata of a bedded deposit may be considered as a composite of rock beams of rectangular cross section, whose component layers differ in thickness and may or may not be separable from each other when they are subjected to loading by their own weight. An analytical study of the behavior of such multiple-layer beams is extremely difficult owing to the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock materials. The complexity is revealed by the fringe photographs obtained from several series of barodynamic photostress experiments conducted on various types of multiple-layer model beams of a medium-grained Bedford limestone. Further discussion on the applicability of barodynamic photostress techniques to the model study of the behavior of mine roofs in stratified geologic media is presented by comparing the phenomenological observations recorded in this investigation.

As most of you have probably surmised from the title of my paper, I am here today to talk with you about the use of diesel engines in the American mining industry and whether or not the free choice to use such equipment will continue to be available to mine operators. Of course, I will present to you my prepared remarks, however, these remarks may be essentially academic in light of a news release, parts of which I would like to read to you. Washington, D. C., The Department of Health, Education, and Welfare today announced proposed new regulations to reduce occupational health risks to workers in the U. S. mining industries by requiring the removal of all diesel powered equipment from American mines by December 31st "While we do not have complete and conclusive information to quantify these health risks we feel it is prudent to undertake this restriction on the use of diesel powered equipment without waiting for the completion of studies that are currently underway to identify and quantify these health risks," said a Department spokesman. HEW has been concerned about the health risks of diesel emissions in the underground coal mines for some time and have investigations underway designed to conclusively demonstrate the nature and magnitude of any health risks. However, HEW has decided to proceed with these regulations without waiting for the final results of these investigations. Further, HEW feels there is sufficient probability that diesel health risks do exist in all mining applications and consequently, the proposed regulations will apply to all surface and underground mining operations. It goes on a little further and indicates that due to the necessity of finalizing these regulations without delay, a period of fifteen days has been provided to receive comments regarding these proposed regulations.

Iron Mountain Mines, Inc., (IMMI) ore de- posits are located in the southeastern portion of the Klamath Mountains in the West Shasta copper/Zinc Mining District in Shasta County (Figure 1). The original massive sulfide ore deposits totaled 22,895,000 Mt (25 million st). The remaining ore deposits contain 12,875,000 Mt (14,183,000 st) of proven massive sulfides and 2,769,000 Mt (3,050,000 st) of proven gossan deposits. The addition of magnetite deposits and tailings (now marketable) brings the total of proven and probable reserves to 20,433,000 Mt (22,508,000 st). The massive sulfide ore bodies are generating a natural flow of acid mine water which has been slowly leaching minerals out of these deposits. This flow varies in volume, depending on rainfall, and contains variable concentrations of copper, zinc, iron and precious metals. This mine water has been treated for the past 50 years at the mine site to remove copper. The treatment process, utilizing scrap iron precipitation, continues at a production rate of approximately 54,430 Kg (120,000 pounds) of copper precipitate annually.

In southwest Wyoming lies buried the world's largest source of natural sodium carbonate, or soda ash. Perhaps a hundred billion tons of trona (sodium sesquicarbonate) are contained in ancient lake beds in the Green River basin'). There the Green River Formation encloses more than 40 extensive beds of trona. At least 25 of these exceed 3 feet (1 meter) in thickness and most of them are more than 300 square miles in extent. Five have been exposed in mines and lie between 800 and 1500 feet below the surface. Others lie at depths of from 400 to 3500 feet. Three companies have underground mines that supply trona to adjacent soda ash plants. These are the FMC Corporation, Allied Chemical Corporation, and Stauffer Chemical Company. A fourth, Texasgulf Corporation, has a mine under development. In 1974, annual soda ash capacity in the Green River area was approximately 4,300,000 tons, which requires the mining of about 7,500,000 tons of trona.

A study of coal pillar strength was done at the Beehive Mine during a three year period, 1974?1977, in a cooperative effort involving the University of Utah, RE/SPEC, Inc., and the American Coal Company (Pariseau et al, 1977). The Beehive Mine is located in the Wasatch Plateau coal field in central Utah near Orangeville, Utah, where mines are developed from outcrops between steep canyon walls with topographic relief of a kilometer or so (3,600 ft). Coal is found in Cretaceous sediments that dip gently to the west. Detailed geology of the Wasatch Plateau is described by Doelling (1972). Mining was done in the Blind Canyon seam. An earlier Deseret Mine worked the Hiawatha seam that is lower in the stratigraphic column by about 36 m (120 ft). Mining progress and ownership changes occurred in time with mine mergers and name changes eventually to the collective Des-Bee-Dove label. At the Beehive Mine, depth varied with topography but was approximately 360 m (1200 ft) on average; seam thickness varied from 1.5 to 6 m (5 to 20 ft) and usually required two passes of the miner. The mine was eventually closed and finally reclaimed in 2003. Semborski and Oakley (2006) present a brief history of the mine and describe the reclamation work in some detail. Figure 1 shows the surface topography in the vicinity of the mine that is in the center of the figure.

Polymorphic transformations taking place in grinding processes, of massicot to litharge in PbO system, and of y to a in Fe203 system, were re-investigated. Grinding was carried-on in a steeel rotation mill charged with WC balls, under inert atmosphere. The kinetics of transformation in PbO was established by means of quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. The resulting data fit a modified logistic growth function up to about 75% of transformed volume fraction, when a mixture at steady-state equilibrium is formed. The reasoning for the use of a modified logistic function is discussed. A sigmoidal growth function can be used if resulting data fit also an empirical power relationship between transformed volume fraction and time. However, it lacks the significance expressed by a modified logistic function. Assuming, the loss in magnetism is directly related to the amount of transformation in Fe 203, a quantitative analysis was performed using a magnetic balance method. The results fit only the modified logistic growth function, and transformation proceeds almost to completion. A wide literature survey of the subject is given. Available data from literature is compared with the results of the present study, and is shown also to fit a modified logistic grown function, with surprisingly similar slpes in a linear plot, independently of the material. The instrumentation effect on kinetics parameters, and the establishment of equilibrium mixture values, are discussed.

Reduction bleaching is used to improve the brightness and color of the kaolin pigments sold to the paper and speciality industries. The bleach re¬duces the iron oxide associated with kaolin deposits to a colorless form by the following reaction: Na2S2O42+ 6Fe+3 + 4 H2O -> 2 NaHSO4 + 6Fe+2 + 6H+ (Conley et al., 1964). At present, sodium hydrosulfite is used by the kaolin industry as the reductive bleach. It is often purchased commercially as a liquid solution and added into an acidified slurry. Before the use of commercial sodium hydrosulfite, kaolin plants manufactured zinc hydrosulfite on site by adding zinc dust to sulfurous acid made by passing SO2 gas into water. This process was abandoned in the 1970s due to environmental concerns about zinc in waste waters. In the 1970s, Engelhard patented a process that made sodium hydrosulfate from an iron hydrosulfate (Tiethof, 1978). Difficulties with separating the iron hydroxide byproduct from the bleach and a decrease in the cost of commercial bleach caused the project to be abandoned.

In the non-operational ?Górka? quarry, there are situated both a waste disposal site of an area of 6.7 ha, containing approximately 1 million ton wastes from high aluminium content materials (incl. about 400000 t of wastes from aluminum hydroxide production), and a pond of an area of roughly 3 ha, up to 15 m deep, with about 400000 m3 of polluted water and infiltrates from the disposal site mentioned. The basic problem related to the effluents in the Górka pond is both their high alkalinity (pH 12-13.4) and a variable analysis of pollutants whose level increases appreciably with the pond?s depth. The solution offered provides, first of all, remedial pumping and a treatment of effluents retained in the Górka reservoir. Effluents would be treated in a reverse osmosis plant according to a process verified so far on a quarter-commercial scale. The treatment process by-product, a brine solution (containing about 25% NaCl) whose amount may reach up to 100000 m3 might be supplied to the Debiensko Mine, which produces technological salt from salt-bearing mine waters. In parallel, an intake of underflows of infiltrates would be provided (previous geochemical identification) in order to take them away from the high aluminum site (by means of deep wells, and possibly girdling ditches). Such effluents would be subject to treatment. The successive stage is the utilization of approx. 50000 m3 of bottom slurry, left in the emptied reservoir, in the production of self-solidifying mixtures, which would be then used for sealing the bottom and the banks of the Górka reservoir. The empty and sealed reservoir would be filled up with a volume of approx. 600000 t of ashes, coming from coal burning in the thermal-electric power station. For the last stage, instead, is scheduled the rehabilitation of the entire waste disposal site in the Górka quarry. The site will be drained, covered with a leveling, sealing and rehabilitating layer, which will allow to introduce plants on the rehabilitated waste site. Later on, the area could be turned into a town park

Solids and liquid phase residence time distribution data is reported for a laboratory column flotation cell. The effects of various physical flotation parameters on residence time distributions are reported and analyzed. A plug flow model with recycle is proposed for the froth phase and a tanks in series model for the pulp. By comparison of two and three phase residence time -distribution data it has been shown that the use of liquid residence time distribution data to predict the residence time distribution of the solids in a column is not valid.
