During the last decade, there haven't been any great innovations in the design features of a copper concentrator. What has worked well in the past continues to work well, so that major breakthroughs have been minimal. Conservatism in the ranks also plays an important part. As a copper concentrator is not designed and built everyday, Davy was elated to have an important part in this project. This is the story of the design of the oracle Ridge Project located north of Tucson on the back of Mt. Lemmon at an elevation of 5,900 feet on the N.E. slope of the Catalinas. The Oracle Ridge property, formerly known as the Control Mine, is owned by Oracle Ridge Mining Partners, a joint venture between Continental Materials Corp. of Chicago and Union Miniere of Brussels, Belgium; both or¬ganizations specializing in the non-ferrous metal industry.

The alkaline hydrothermal processing of K-feldspar rocks in an autoclave can be a pathway to synthesize a potassium fertilizer for tropical soils that is potentially cheaper and more efficient than traditional potash (KCl). When K-feldspar undergoes hydrothermal alteration in the presence of calcium oxide (CaO), it generates a complex mixture of calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (CASH) minerals that incorporate K atoms stochastically in their structure. These atoms are subsequently released, as shown in a test-tube leaching test, indicating a possible uptake by crops. The relationship between the processing temperature and time in the autoclave for the hydrothermal reaction and the resulting mineralogy and elemental release are only partially understood and are investigated in this study. Elucidating that relationship is the key requisite for subsequent techno-economic analysis, and ultimately for the development of a fertilizer that can be considered as a feasible alternative to KCl.

The production of nickel coated mica composite powder by hydrogen reduction of a nickel ammine sulphate solution, followed by the production of molded plastic samples containing Ni/Mica is described. Sample preparation by injection or compression molding is outlined and the better results in compression molding are explained by the combination of better particle-to-particle contact, less particle breakage during processing, and more random particle distribution in the plastic. Three volume resistivity measurement techniques are described and compared. Two of them (conductive paint and silver-rubber electrodes) are found reliable and are used throughout the work. The influence of nickel content and particle size of Ni/Mica on volume resistivity is evaluated and the optimum product defined. One of the most important assets of Ni/Mica, its ease of injection molding, is demonstrated by the good electrical properties obtained with little optimization of the injection molding process. Surface roughness of molded plastics with and without Ni/Mica is briefly discussed. Shielding effectiveness of Ni/Mica in four plastics (PP, ABS, PBT and PC) is presented and correlated to volume resistivity data for the same materials. The addition of 15 to 50 weight % Ni/Mica (3 to 16 volume %) to plastics and subsequent injection or compression molding produces composite materials having low volume resistivities (0.03 to 1 ohm.cm) and high shielding effectiveness (40 to 70 dB).

This study aims to investigate the optimal method for ore pass construction in incompetent rock masses. We evaluated the conventional and raise boring methods based on safety, efficiency, excavation control and ground support for ore pass construction. A stability analysis using analytical Q-raise (QR method) and kinematic analysis methods for ore pass construction with a raise borer before and after grout injection of the rock mass was performed. As a case study, an ore pass (diameter of 3 m, depth of 100 m) within an incompetent rock mass was considered to gain further insight. The rock mass was characterized according to the classification methods Q Barton, rock quality designation (RQD), rock mass rating (RMR) and geological strength index (GSI). The grout intensity number (GIN) method of grout injection was used. The safety factor of less than 1.075 obtained before injection was lower than the acceptance criteria. However, grout injection before raise borer excavation resulted in a safety factor greater than 1.5. Using a raise borer without pre-grouting indicated that the maximum unsupported diameter (MUSD) of the ore pass was less than the required 3 m and equal to or larger than 3 m post-grouting.

Stratiform uranium deposits occur in Canada along the north shore of Lake Huron near the base of the Middle Precambrian Huronian Supergroup. Outcrop of the Buronian Supergroup extends for over 400 km from Sault Ste. Marie in the west eastward through Sudbury and then northeastward to Cobalt. Maximum stratigraphic thickness exceeds 5 km. The predominant Huronian rock type is metamorphosed sandstone (quartzite), with sub- ordinate argillite, conglomerate, mixtite (possibly tillite), volcanic rocks, and minor limestone, Much of the quartzite is highly feldspathic. Substantial uranium ore was first discovered in Huronian rocks in 1953 and has been exploited continuously since the initial mine-mill plant was constructed at the Pronto ore body, 30 km south of the present townsite of Elliot Lake. Only one ore body remains in production, however. It is shared by Rio Algom and Denison Mines 14 km north of the town of Elliot Lake.

Evver since it first displayed an autonomous mining truck at the 1996 MinExpo show in Las Vegas, NV, Caterpillar has been building the blocks to a fully autonomous mine. In May, the company unveiled another block in that progression, the new Cat MineStar System that it says is ?the industry?s broadest, most comprehensively integrated miner operations and mobile equipment management system.? The full system is comprised of five capability sets ? Fleet, Terrain, Detect, Health and Command ? to help operators define the size and scope of their management system based on the needs of their mining operations. Michael Murphy, technology and autonomy manager for Cat Global Mining, explained that the customers were not ready for an autonomous mining truck in 1996, but that many customers wanted the building blocks to eventually get to autonomous mining. After 15 years of work, Murphy said the building blocks have come together in the form of the Cat MineStar System.

Zeta potential changes were determined as a function of pH, metal ion, and surfactant concentrations. Prom the analysis of data, flotation experiments were carried out to correlate float-ability with the differences in zeta potential. Cassiterite in water bears a negative zeta potential, The zeta potential of cassiterite is sensitive to pH changes; the electric double layer arises from the preferential adsorption of H+ and OH- ions and subsequent ionization of the hydroxylated surface. It is suspected that hydronium-ion concentration may cause reversal in the sign of the zeta potential. The ZPC was found to occur at pH 3.4. Metallic ions and the hydrated ions thereof affect the zeta potential of cassiterite in differing degrees of intensity. Without prior activation, sulfonated surfactants do not change the zeta potential of cassiterite. Sodium alkyl aryl sulfonate is especially active on lead-activated cassiterite and ferric-activated cassiteriten Microcalorimetric fiests confimed the activity of ions on cassiterite and showed the hydrated character of cassiterite smfaces. Close correlation between zeta potential and microflotation results was achieved.

FTIR measurements using a special ATR cell were carried out to investigate the adsorption of two thiol collectors, potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and sodium diethyl dithlophoshate (NaDTP), on an unoxidized lead sulfide surface. Both qualitative and quantitative determinations of the collectors were made at the coverages from two monolayers down to 2% of the monolayer. The experiments revealed that the thiol collector species coordinate to the lead atoms at the surface of lead sulfide but the surface products distinctly differ from the precipitated bulk lead compounds. There exists a linear relationship between the coverage and the signal intensity of the IR spectra within the coverage range studied.

Who will work at the mine of the future, and what will that work look like?These are questions that do not yet have definitive answers, but they are questions that need to be asked for the mining industry to move into a future that is as filled with uncertainty and challenge as it is with promise and opportunity.On Feb. 16, the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo and the 117th CMA National Western Mining Association conference began with a keynote address, "The mine of the future: Forecasting opportunities and challenges for the global mining industry." Panelists from five sectors of the mining industry participated in the session, which was followed by the conference and expo, that in large part, were also trying to answer the question of what the mine of the future will look like.In coming months, Mining Engineering will continue the discussions and answer some of the questions submitted by members of the 2,000-person audience during the keynote address in a monthly feature called, "Predicting the Mine of the Future," and in Thought Leaders Podcasts with the panelists and other industry experts."

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has tried many regional and laboratory efforts to develop measurement and monitoring techniques using environmental remote sensing technologies. In 1997, the agency established the Advanced Measurement Initiative (AMI): This is a eadquarters-level program, operating under the auspices of the EPA Office of Research and Development. The program is one result of the April 30,1996 White House Conference on Advanced Monitoring of the Environment. The EPA was encouraged to work with other federal agencies to leverage its remote sensing capabilities and use them to improve the efficiency, cost-effectiveness and flexibility of environmental measurement and monitoring for regulatory compliance and reinvention. During the fall of 1996, the EPA and the Department of Energy developed an interagency effort to broaden the use of governmental technologies for environmental measurement and monitoring. In addition, the EPA and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted joint workshops on the use of NASA remote sensing and other technologies for water quality and pollution applications. In the meantime, the EPA proceeded with an industry-proposed workshop to explore ways to cooperatively examine new research and to develop commercial remote sensing systems. It also examined how these systems might become accepted by the EPA in the regulatory and compliance processes. In particular, industry was interested in where new remote sensing capabilities might fit in with EPA's efforts at regulatory reinvention. Historically, the mining and petroleum industries have been reluctant to experiment with or use environmental remote sensing. They were concerned with the unknown liability from potential discovery of previously unknown environmental problems. Moreover, resource industries have been reluctant to use remote sensing for environmental applications where the EPA did not accept such data or information as part of the compliance process. Acceptance by the EPA of these advanced measurement and monitoring technologies (AMMT) will be a major reason for industry's increasedd use of remote sensing in environmental "applications for regulatory compliance. In July 1997, the EPA Office of Research and Development hosted at the Colorado School of Mines a stakeholders workshop on the AMI program and industry-government collaboration. The workshop's aim was to demonstrate the usefulness of AMMT technologies for environmental applications. Stakeholders included the mining and petroleum industries; environmental services companies; state environmental agencies and local governments; remote-sensing, value-added companies and data suppliers. The workshop used specific technologies and applications as a way to develop collaborative demonstration projects for several AMMT technologies covering different environmental problems. The workshop focused on the use of highly sensitive hyperspectral (very narrow spectral bands), geographic information systems and surface mapping to identify active acid-producing mine dumps and wastes from benign wastes at Leadville, CO. NASA's advance infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS) was the instrument used. It was developed at California Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The EPA, the US Bureau of Land Managment (BLM), the US Geological Survey and several environmental service contractors sponsored the overflight and data evaluation. The AVIRIS study demonstrated reliability (95% correct surface mineral identification) and cost-effectiveness of this technology to accurately map and discriminate active acid-producing mine wastes from benign wastes. It could also predict which streams would be effected by acid and toxic mineral drainage. The BLM'said that the AVIRIS overflight could save it $500,000 a year in surface sampling costs at Leadville. The AMI workshop further outlined five 1997 funded AMI projects of potential interest to the mining industry. They were: ? In the past decade, many hardrock surface miners have revegetated dumps and tailings ponds to allow those waste disposal areas to blend more easily with the surrounding landscapes. Efforts have also been made to more creatively use the flat land resulting from the disposal of overburden and tailings. However, the mines which serve the best post-mining land uses are those that have been preplanned to incorporate such end uses. To more fully explore such a philosophy, interdisciplinary team from The University of Arizona conducted a study during 1974 and 1975 of six open pit copper mines in the Santa Cruz River Basin south of Tucson, Arizona for the purpose of investigating both interim and end-use possibilities for mine waste disposal areas. Among other reasons for the study, it was felt that alternatives for such waste areas would be more socially acceptable than barren dumps or tailings ponds. The team, known as the Mines Project Group, consisted of architects, engineers, and hydrologists. As it would have been economically infeasible to move the existing waste rock dumps or tailings ponds, preplanning was limited to the disposal of waste generated after the inception of the project. To better present their concepts, architecture professors Kenneth Clark and Fred Matter constructed a large-scale cardboard relief model of the mines and the surrounding Santa Cruz River Valley (1). The model was built at a scale of 1:12 000 (1 in = 1000 ft) with 30.48 m (100 ft) contour intervals and covered an area of 40.23 km by 32.18 km (25 miles by 20 miles) in scaled area. The mines being studied were cut into the model, but the proposed waste dumps and tailings ponds were built separately so different disposal configurations could be evaluated.

"The mining industry suffers from a number of incorrect perceptions, one of which is that it is an outdated industry that has not changed for hundreds of years. But the truth of the matter is that mining is a vibrant, highly complex industry that not only employs highly skilled and educated professionals but is also often on the cutting edge of technology. It is an industry with projects that are ever-evolving and among the most challenging engineering feats in the world.Take for instance the U.S. 53 Highway Relocation project in Virginia, MN. While more of a civil engineering job than a traditional mining project, it is still a complex engineering challenge taking place in a mining environment that has called on the skills of eight state agencies, three federal agencies, a host of contractors and many consultants, including many from the local mining industry in the Iron Range of Minnesota.In 1960, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) constructed U.S, Highway 53 on a private easement owned by US Steel that cut across a massive taconite deposit. MnDOT constructed the highway with the agreement that if the highway needed to be moved to access the taconite deposit before 1987, US Steel would foot the bill. And if the move was required after 1987, the responsibility would fall to MnDOT. In 2010, MnDOT received the notice that the highway would have to move as property owner United Taconite planned to access the ore, setting in motion one of the greatest engineering challenges, and the highest risk project, in the history of the states’ transportation department.Pat Huston, U.S. Highway 53 Relocation project manager, opened the 90th SME Minnesota Section Conference in Duluth, MN on April 19 with a presentation about the project that includes 5 km (3.2 miles) of fourlane highway and a new 345-m (1,132-ft) bridge that will be the tallest in Minnesota when it is completed later this year.“This project was not business as usual,” Huston told the packed crowd. “Highway 53 connects Canada and the Iron Range to Duluth and Lake Superior. Acid-activated montmorillonite is used worldwide as a catalyst and as a sorbent for the enhancement and purification of petroleum products as well as vegetable and animal-based fats. The solid-acid character of the activated montmorillonite is imparted by the manufacturing process, giving it unique properties that are exploited in these industries. Several international companies and a multitude of local clay producers are focusing on improving the efficiency of their standard and specialized products. This paper will describe the use of acid-activated montmorillonite in traditional sorbent applications, as a solid acid catalyst, and other new uses.

Mining steeply dipping coal seams is a difficult task. Prior to 1996, fully mechanized longwall mining methods along the seam strike direction were tried in China and other countries. Due to its larger coal reserve in steep seams, China made more, but still limited, progress on mining such seams than other major coal-mining countries. In the last two decades, accelerated research efforts have tried to improve the mining technology in steeply dipping coal seams. Based on this work, a dynamic model of a roof-support-floor (R-S-F) system under asymmetrical constraints in mining steep seams is established here, and a theory of strata control and hazard prevention is formed. The key technologies for mining steep coal seams include global and regional strata control methods in the longwall face; methods for the longwall face machines to sustain static and dynamic loads; and flexible protection technology. These theories and technologies have been successfully applied in China to the mining of steep coal seams of varying thickness and hardness, with hard and soft roof and floor, and with a high potential for spontaneous combustion. In recent years, the technology has been introduced to Russia, India, Uzbekistan and other countries where steep coal seams are mined.

The Missouri River Intake Screen Structure and Tunnel (MRISST) is one phase of the Red River Valley Water Supply Project (RRVWSP), a vital piece of infrastructure in the state of North Dakota to transport water to drought-laden communities in the eastern half of the state. The scope of work consists of constructing a cofferdam in the Missouri River, mining a 1,600-foot by 74-inch tunnel from a secant pile shaft near the riverbank into a cofferdam, and erecting a 40-foot Y-shaped vertical pipe structure in the cofferdam to support the intake screens. Construction personnel worked in the river through the North Dakota winter to construct the cofferdam and contended with high hydrostatic pressures and raveling sands, gravels, cobbles and boulders while mining the tunnel. Diligent planning and meticulous execution were essential to overcoming the challenges encountered below the Missouri River.

The importance of mineralogical and chemical characterization of fine particles in the fields of mineral and metallurgical processing is discussed. Emphasis is placed on electron beam analysis techniques including electron diffraction and energy dispersive analysis with special reference to the scanning trans- mission electron microscope. The correct choice of instrument depending upon particle size, composition and nature of sample is stressed and the analytica1 capabilities of different types of instruments are evaluated. Recent applications of electron beam equipment to processing problems are presented and the paper concludes with a review of new developments in the fields of surface analysis and micro-diffraction.

"Surface subsidence caused by both underground room-and-pillar mining operations and solution mining operations have each been studied separately, but never combined. In 2008, FMC Minerals began using solution mining at its Westvaco Mine as a secondary extraction method in an area that had been previously mined using the room-and-pillar mining method. Mining regulations require that subsidence associated with underground mining activities be monitored and measured annually. Researchers at Montana Tech were able to develop a relationship between measured surface mine subsidence and solution mining that can be used at the Westvaco Mine to estimate the production of trona from solution mining operations. PROJECT BACKGROUND FMC Minerals (FMC) has increased the production of trona from its Westvaco Mine near Green River, Wyoming, using solution mining as a secondary extraction method in an area previously mined using the room-and-pillar method. The area of interest was mined until 2001 with the use of a borer miner at a depth of approximately 1,600 feet. Currently, FMC determines the amount of trona produced using its solution mining operations by measuring the dissolved solids pumped from the mine. This approach, however, does not account for the location from which the trona was removed. The location from which the trona was removed and the size of the cavern created by the solution mining operations is important to FMC’s mine planning. FMC believed that with proper investigation of the subsidence at the Westvaco test site, a correlation might be found that would allow for the use of surface subsidence measurements to estimate the amount and location of trona production from the solution mining activities. The primary goal of this project, conducted by Montana Tech, was to find a relationship between the measured subsidence and the solution mining activities. The project attempted to model the relationship between the measured subsidence and the solution cavern using Salt_Subsid, an existing subsidence software package from the Solution Mining Research Institute (SMRI), to determine the program’s usefulness for locating and developing the cavern created by solution mining activities. The project also attempted to develop an equation that could be used to predict solution trona production based on measured subsidence. The data used in this study were collected over a seven year period, 2008 through 2014."

The gold price declined for the second year in a row, averaging $11.05/g ($343.76/ oz), 5.2% lower than the $11.65/g ($362.44/oz) seen in 1991. Heap leaching has become one of the prime technologies used for the recovery of precious metals from low-grade ores over the past ten years. The recovery process involves mining and stacking the ore on engineered leach pads, with or without crushing and/or agglomeration, followed by leaching with a low concentration sodium cyanide solution. The metal-bearing, pregnant solution is then processed by zinc precipitation or activated carbon absorption to extract the precious metals. The leaching process continues until all economic metal values are removed at which time the spent heap leach pads, the leached materials and excess process solutions require decommissioning. The management of these solutions may present a potential challenge for successful and environmentally sound decommissioning due to their composition, volume or continuity of generation from the spent ore even though active leaching has been terminated. The principal objectives of solution management in decommissioning spent heap leach pads are to meet all operative environmental regulations in a cost-effective manner and to leave the pads in a condition where they do not present a long-term liability either to the operator or to the environment. This involves the reduction in volume of the residual process solutions and/or treatment of these solutions to where they meet applicable water quality criteria. In the past, the environmental and economic aspects of decommissioning and solution management have been overlooked or under-estimated during the planning of mining operations. As a result, there is a potential for long-term liabilities and costs to be recognized only at the end of active leaching, a time at which operating revenues and cash-flow are minimal. Therefore, the decommissioning process requires addressing at the mine planning stage and agencies now require that a plan for solution management after the cessation of operations be submitted prior to initiation of mining. This paper discusses aspects of process solution management during decommissioning, both in terms of quantity and quality, and how potential issues may be recognized and planned for in the initial stages of heap leach design.
