What is the most economical way of tunneling in mixed ground that may experience high pressures? Non-continuously pressurized, mixed ground Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are being utilized to deal with a wide range of geology. Continuous improvements in these mixed ground machines allow for ever-increasing efficiency and reduction of project risk due to unexpected conditions. We will explore the performance of recent mixed ground machines throughout the world and then look at how new improvements to mixed ground machines will enable excavation of an expanded range of ground conditions. These conditions include mixed ground with low fines, mixed face rock, and fracture/fault zones with high pressures where in the past a Slurry TBM may have been utilized.

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control sys- teas to be used when selecting circuits for wash-ing fine coal (28M x 0 size fraction). However, the desliming, declaying and sizing procedures required to ensure efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and dewatering circuit design which is extremely effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 28M x 0 (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

Nassau County, New York, is undertaking several projects to improve the water quality in the Western Bays of Long Island. A major step forward will be the completion of the Bay Park Conveyance Project, which will divert most treated effluent away from the Western Bays to an existing ocean outfall at the Cedar Creek Water Pollution Control Plant. The ongoing works include 3.6 miles of microtunneling, 7 miles of sliplining, 14 shafts, and a 75 MGD pump station. This paper provides an overview of the design and an update on construction progress through December 2022. The project is a collaborative effort between Nassau County, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the design-builder, and various consultants.

"The Rapid Excavation & Tunneling Conference (RETC) is a world-renowned event that attracts some of the best minds in the global underground construction and tunneling industry. Observations made from laboratory analysis of samples of fine-grained argillaceous materials (shales) subjected to various changes in moisture content have been correlated to loss of strength in the rock material. This reaction to a change in in-situ conditions (subsequent to mining) at a mine site combined with the observed relationships of surface-disturbing subsidence features at locations where the predominant overburden material is fine-grained, provides a predictive tool for the subsidence engineer.

Reserves of potash are more than adequate to meet future world demand for this primary fertilizer nutrient. The bulk of both reserves and current production is located in only a few countries. Recent attention has focused on potential development of smaller reserves to supply local markets in developing areas of the world. However, most new capacity in the next decade will be built in countries with large current production and reserves. The paper reviews current and future projects that will add to the world supply of potash.

The Grand Isle Sulphur Mine is located in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately seven miles off the coast of Grand Isle, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. The depth of water at this location is about 50 feet. The deposit is on acreage covered by oil, gas, and mineral leases which were originally issued in favor of Humble Oil & Refining Company by the State of Louisiana, and which were continued, maintained, and redesignated by the Department of the Interior of the United States, pursuant to Section 6(b) of the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act. On September 19, 1956, Freeport Sulphur Company acquired from Humble Oil & Refining Company the sulphur rights underlying the tracts. This assignment was approved by the Secretary of the Interior on July 12, 1957. The Director, United States Geological Survey, approved Freeport Sulphur Company as Operator on July 31, 1957. Actual design began in September 1956; the first structural contract was let December 15, 1957, and offshore erection began in June 1958. The initial phase of construction will be completed and production started in early 1960. The estimated total cost of the project is $30,- 000,000, of which $8,000,000 is the extra cost for being in the Gulf of Mexico.

Abstract. The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, as part of its effort to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, is conducting research on the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica. A system of crushers, screens, and zigzag air classifiers is used to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica ore and from the waste tailings of abandoned mica operations. The plus 0.21-millimeter-size mica is effectively recovered by this method. The mica concentrates produced contain over 90 percent mica. The method recovered up to 78 percent of the mica in the samples. As a dry concentration method, the pneumatic-beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas of limited water resource.

A size-continuous breakage kinetics model is postulated and supported with industrial grinding mill data. It is shown that the kinetics parameters include the effects of possible classification at the mill discharge. The estimated parameters were then used in the kinetics model to simulate the behavior of a grinding mill in open and closed circuit operation. While material transport and kinetics are equally important in open loop operation, heavy recycle in a closed circuit make a detailed material transport model for grinding unnecessary. In effect, the mill can be considered as backmixed. This suggests that more emphasis should be placed on modeling the classifier than the development of detailed material transport models for the grinding mill.

The design of coal-mine layouts is based on the knowledge of a broad range of geological and geotechnical parameters, which must be determined from a sequence of exploration programs. It follows that any weaknesses in selecting, determining, interpreting or utilizing these data are inevitably reflected into the mine-planning process. In this paper, the main methods of exploration are reviewed and evaluated with the emphasis on acquisition, interpretation and storage of variables pertaining to mine-design. Some common problems are highlighted and recommendations are given for improving the utilization of data and optimizing coal-mine design procedures.

Shortly after World War II, considerable impetus was given to use of truck haulage in open pit mines by the manufacture of large off-highway trucks. Mine management was quick to utilize this more flexible approach to open pit operation and in the ensuing years much time and energy has been spent to improve the basic concept. Dramatic progress has been made in drilling, blasting, loading and hauling with much emphasis placed on equipment improvement. In general, haul roads in open pit mines and quarries have received rather perfunctory treatment in studies of surface mining operations. Their importance to the successful pit operation requires more than a brief sentence saying, "Good haul roads must be maintained." Haulage costs account for approximately one-third of total mining costs including general costs and about 90 percent of the total loading-haulage cycle time is consumed in travel, hence, good haul road planning, construction and maintenance are mandatory for a viable operation.

Synthetic fuels will be the first major development effort to feel the effects of a new set of opposition forces. These confrontations will not be of the same variety as those which occured in the 1970s. Instead the synfuels industry, particularly in the West, will find itself confronting a new coalition of local political, community, and state spokesmen. They will oppose synfuels because the projects will represent a threat to existing lifestyles, political structures, taxes, social life, water rights, economics, and other politically sensitive considerations. In short, they mean change -- usually dynamic, full of unknowns and always threatening. The battles themselves may be fought technically over environmental issues, law and regulations; often these will be the instruments of the opposition. The real underlying problems will likely lie much deeper. In many cases environmental groups will be enlisted as the standard bearers; however, this approach may simply reflect the fact that environmental objections are convenient or at times the only tools at hand.

The Institute of Gas Technology (IGT), under sponsorship of the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research (OCR), and the American Gas Association (A. G. A. ), has been undertaking the development of one of several processes to convert coal to high-Btu gas as a means of supplementing natural gas supplies. It is anticipated that there will be a significant need for such gas in the foreseeable future in order to meet the ever increasing demands for this preferred fuel form. HISTORY The development of the HYGAS® Process is based on various studies conducted at IGT starting back as far as 1945. Initial work was directed toward production of synthesis gas with subsequent catalytic methanation. By 1964 the concept of the direct hydrogenation of coal to produce methane noncatalytically was well-founded and the chemistry was reasonably well established. Work up until this point in time was financed by the American Gas Association. In 1964 the U. S. Department of the Interior, Office of Coal Research joined with A. G. A. to support the program. The objective at that time was to develop the necessary know-how to enable the design of a pilot plant, a necessary step in the ultimate commercialization of the process. Work for the next three years (1964-1967) emphasized investigation of fluidized-bed technology in the hydrogasification step, where moving-bed technology had been previously employed, as well as identification of commercially available catalysts acceptable for catalytic methanation of the CO and hydrogen in the hydrogasifier effluent under operating conditions in the system. By 1967, the preliminary design of a 3 ton/hr pilot plant had been finalized, and IGT received authorization from OCR to proceed with the detailed design and construction of that facility. Volcanic activity occurred during six periods of Arizona's geologic history. Precambrian volcanism occurred in two pulses at 1.8-1.6 billion years (b.y.) ago and at 1.2-1.1 b.y. ago. Volcanism occurred again in mid-Jurassic and Laramide (Late Cretaceousearly Tertiary) time. Volcanic rocks from these times are not used commercially in any significant quantity. Middle and late Cenozoic magmatic activity covered large areas of Arizona with voluminous volcanic rocks. During the mid-Tertiary magmatic pulse, explosive silicic magmatism, with eruption of areally extensive ash-flow tufts, covered large areas in the Basin and Range Province, while the Colorado Plateau remained largely unaffected. Basalt eruption also occurred during and immediately after silicic volcanism, leading to compositionally diverse suites of volcanic rocks. Late Cenozoic volcanism occurred throughout Arizona and was dominated by wide-spread eruption of basalt flows with local cinder-cone clusters and siliceous volcanic deposits. Perlite deposits near Picketpost Mountain in northeastern Pinal County account for the bulk of the industrial uses of mid-Cenozoic volcanic rocks. Other perlites of presumed middle Tertiary age are present in central, southeastern, and western Arizona, but to date remain unexploited. Arizona Fire Agate is a valuable gem material and is associated with volcanic rocks of middle Tertiary age. Basaltic rock of this age also is utilized in the manufacture of rock wool for insulation. Late Cenozoic volcanism produced most of the industrial-quality volcanic rocks. Basalt, cinder cones, and materials of rhyolitic composition are commercially exploited by municipal and Federal agencies and private industry for aggregates, road conditioners and maintenance materials, asphaltic concretes, cinder block construction, pozzolans, and landscaping. These deposits are generally confined to the Flagstaff and Springerville areas. A famous peridot gem locality is associated with late Tertiary basalts at Peridot Mesa on the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Important products derived from altered volcanic materials of late Cenozoic age include clay and zeolite. Arizona's volcanic-rock sequences are still incompletely known, particularly in central and western Arizona. The potential for recognition and exploitation of important new deposits of useful volcanic materials is high.

There are no particular nor unique features of iron mining that are not shared in some degree by all mining ventures everywhere. There are, however, at least three problems that have acquired a special emphasis from a unique cause. That cause is the embarrassment of riches under which the industry is suffering. The most obvious' feature of iron mining today is the copious abundance of usable ore and its almost universal distribution over the face of the earth. By the term "usable ore" is meant ore that is amenable to reduction by the usual and conventional processes. Amidst this plenty, three problems become acutely emphasized: 1. The geographic location that will provide a mine with the best market opportunity. 2. The size of the orebody that will be required to' return the preproduction investment. 3. The geometry and configuration of the orebody that will permit quality control measures to be effectively executed.

Stringent environmental regulations, which have limited the use of sludge ponds, coupled with the economic incentive to clean more 'coal or to add fine coal cleaning additions to existing preparation plants have increased the use of static thickeners in preparation plants. The Lamella Gravity Settler, sometimes de signated Lamella Thickener, is a shallow depth sedimentation device which has been applied in a variety of industrial process and wastewater control projects in place of the conventional raked thickeners. This paper presents the theory and design of the La-mella Thickener, as well as describing the operating results from several full scale installations in a variety of Appalachian preparation plants.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

Accurate knowledge of the gas content of coal seams has always been important, according to the work of W. P. Diamond and J. R. Levine, 1981, but is becoming increasingly important for several reasons: Excessive gas emissions in the mine can create explosion hazards. Depletion of shallower coal reserves is forcing underground operations to greater depths where coal gas content is often greater. Natural gas prices and the need for new energy sources make naturally occurring coal gas a potential resource of economic interest. Information on coal gas content will impact mine designs, mine ventilation system specifications, and the effectiveness of methane control procedures used. Accurate resource assessment is needed for projecting and designing potential gas utilization enterprises. The emphasis upon methane hazards in mining operations, and upon potential methane utilization, has led us to improve upon the procedures used to determine coalbed methane levels.

Even in an otherwise care-fully done sampling procedure, reducing subsample weight, or splitting, when the grain size of material is too large commonly generates significant error. Such error can be estimated from the standard deviation of differences between values of PAIRED ASSAYS. Samples from split-ting steps immediately before comminution, and showing a restricted range of grade, generate paired assays. Splitting steps characterized by relative standard deviations exceeding 16% generate nonrepresentative data. Such steps should be redesigned to optimize reliability of assay-dependent studies. A sampling scheme can be graphically characterized, and then redesigned as appropriate, using a SAMPLING NOMOGRAPH. Use of the nomograph avoids continued replication of assays. Generally at a splitting step, excessive error can be reduced by comminuting more material. Unnecessary effort can be mitigated by comminuting less finely and/or by splitting to a smaller weight.

Flow models are used to predict the extraction efficiency of metals in rock piles. These models typically use hydraulic parameters obtained through column studies, which assume that the material in the column wholly represents the entire pile and the parameters can be upscaled several orders of magnitude for model evaluation. This assumption fails for parameters that are spatially variable or scale dependent. To overcome these issues, measurements made directly on the heap at the appropriate model scale can be made with the electrical resistivity method. The method aims to map the variations in the electrical resistivity, which can be associated with moisture content, degree of fines, metal content, and leachate concentration. We present an example of calibrating the resistivity with borehole measurements of moisture using geostatistics to show how the resistivity method can be used to obtain a spatial moisture distribution. It was shown that cokriging the resistivity and moisture together gives a more reliable distribution.
