The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 0.34 lb NaCN/ton of solution. Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0-5 to 2.9 Pb CaS/lb Kg in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

As part of a much larger research project, factor analysis was employed to help interpret and compare the geochemical signatures produced by two different sample media; a traditional -80# soil fraction, and a coarse float. Both sample types were collected by hand auger from the extension zone of the Redmoor sheeted-vein complex and analyzed -for 19 major and trace elements. The rationale behind the study infers that the geochemical anomalies produced by wallrock alteration around such targets can be better detected in the lithogeochemical rather than the soil environment, sometimes at considerable distance from their source.

Controlling and predicting ground movements are essential to the design of shoring systems. The Courthouse Commons tunnel in San Diego, California, included a 56-foot-deep temporary shaft as a launching point for tunneling using the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM). The rectangular shaft was unique in that it was surcharged on one wall by an 11-story building and employed a hybrid support of excavation design. An array of geotechnical instrumentation was used to monitor lateral and vertical movements at the ground surface. Seismic monitoring is one of the few noninvasive technologies with the potential to provide sub-surface geomechanical information to operators of large open-pit mines. Although passive seismic data has been used to refine emerging failure geometries and provide advance indication of surface deformations in the literature, doing so reliably in an operational context is much more difficult. This is due in part to difficulties in estimating and interpreting source locations and parameters in complex, low-stress open-pit environments. Additionally, the high costs associated with implementing, operating, and maintaining deep borehole seismic networks, which are most commonly used to monitor large open pits, can be difficult to justify, especially if monitoring benefits are not readily apparent. In this study, we explore the use of a near-surface nodal seismic deployment, which is commonly used in oil and gas exploration, for monitoring open-pit mining-related seismicity on a short-term basis. A deployment of 18 geophones was conducted on the surface in and around the Bingham Canyon Mine, a large open-pit mine near Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, where we find the small seismic array can detect and locate a variety of mining-related seismic sources, even with an extremely simplified velocity model. We outline the process of creating an idealized velocity model, developing a local magnitude scale, and interpreting the observed seismicity. Of note, we analyze a sequence of mining-induced events associated with a known structure on the south pit wall. We conclude with discussion on how surface-based deployments may be used to augment, or in some cases supplant, borehole seismic networks at large open-pit mines depending on monitoring requirements and objectives.

"Newmont Mining Corporation operates the Yanacocha mine in Perú and the gold milling section of the property includes a Sulfidization-Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) plant to remove copper from pregnant leach solution. Since its commissioning in 2008, the plant has been intermittently operated as needed to remove copper upstream of a carbon adsorption circuit. However, starting in 2015 Newmont expects the plant to operate on a more continuous basis in response to higher copper ores that will be processed in the gold mill. In anticipation of this, Newmont conducted a campaign in May 2014 with stockpiled high-copper ore to evaluate performance of the SART plant with elevated levels of copper in feed solution. Results from the campaign demonstrated the SART plant is capable of efficiently treating high-copper leach solution. During the campaign, leach solution copper levels ranged from about 100 to 700 mg/L, and copper removals ranging from about 56% to +99% were achieved. The median copper removal efficiency observed during the campaign was about 94%. The primary plant modification determined necessary following the campaign was the need to improve consistency with sulfide dosing. INTRODUCTION Copper removal from cyanide leach solution can be affected through the addition of sulfide at acidic pH to precipitate copper sulfide as a solid. There has been renewed interest in the process in the past several years due to the increasingly common issue of high copper levels in cyanide leach solutions. The term Sulfidization- Acidification-Recycle-Thickening (SART) is used as an acronym for the process according to the primary unit operations utilized. At a pH of approximately 4.0 to 5.0, the addition of soluble sulfide to a copper-bearing leach solution will result in the precipitation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) solid. The overall acidification and sulfidization reaction is (assuming the use of sulfuric acid for pH adjustment): 2Cu(CN)3-2 + 3H2SO4 + S-2 ? Cu2S(s) + 6HCN(aq) + 3SO4-2 The above reaction is written relative to the copper-cyanide complex 2Cu(CN)3-2, though analogous reactions also take place with the other common copper-cyanide complexes Cu(CN)2- and Cu(CN)4-3. Sulfide in the above reaction (S-2) is normally supplied as sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) purchased in solid or concentrated liquid form. Two characteristics of this reaction that are beneficial to a leaching operation are: 1. Copper is removed from solution as Cu2S (synthetic chalcocite) solid, which can then be sold to a smelter for its copper value. 2. Cyanide that is complexed with copper in the leach solution is released as free cyanide, thereby regenerating cyanide that can be recycled to the leaching operation for continued use."

The advantage of using ammonium phosphate salt as flux is the selective precipitation of chromium(III) compounds, which are considered nontoxic and environmentally friendly. The technique in this paper is determined to have potential to be applied in the metallurgical industry, where it can be used in the beneficiation of chromite mineral ores. The higher chromium contents of chromite ores often require furnaces to run at higher temperatures of above 1,300 °C, which can cause shutdown of the ore processing plant and accumulation of the sticky chrome compounds — including toxic chromium(VI) waste — which are generated as byproducts. The other advantage of this technique is its low to moderate energy consumption compared to existing techniques.

Roof falls continue to affect productivity and safety in U.S. coal mines in spite of significant increases in support utilization in recent decades. To minimize roof stability problems while controlling support effectiveness, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on support and ground monitoring techniques. Practical implementation of this research is presented in this paper. Instruments to monitor rock mass deformation, support loads, and microseismic emissions have traditionally been used to assess roof stability. Controlled-source seismic surveys are being used as well. In this paper, measurement techniques are reviewed, and the effectiveness of deformation measurements is demonstrated. This is achieved by an analysis of deformation history from four case studies in room-and-pillar retreat mines. In spite of differences in geologic, geometric, and support conditions in these mines, roof behavior is shown to have been similar prior to failure. The rate of roof movement is suggested as a reliable indicator of roof stability.

The Hutti greenstone belt comprising predominantly of low-potassium tholeitic basalt has undergone regional metamorphism of a transition zone between greenchist to amphibolite facies. The important mineral constituents of the volcanic suite are amphibole and plagioclase which appear to be the product of regional metamorphism. These minerals have been recognized as the main indicators of metamorphic temperature and pressure. With a view to understand the P-T conditions of metamorphism of the belt, electron microprobe studies were carried out on amphibole and plagioclase and the chemical data was used to decipher the metamorphic conditions. The results obtained indicated a metamorphic temperature of about 6000 c and pressure of 5 kbs. for the Hutti greenstone belt.

This report is based on existing reports and recently gathered field data. It discusses mineral resource potential of Tertiary playas in the Fort Irwin region. An estimated 1.3 million tons of measured salt "reserves", and 20 million tons of indicated salt resources, have been identified north of the fort. Other indicated resources include 300,000 tons of celestite, 800,000 tons of gypsum, and 10 million tons of selenite. Zeolitic tuff was mined south of Fort Irwin from 1978 to 1984, and unexplored occurrences are widespread. Calcium-bentonite is mined near Barstow, and more may exist, including valuable sodium-and lithium-based bentonites.

"The successful commercialization of a pressure oxidation (POX) process for recovering metal values, including gold, copper, zinc, nickel and molybdenum, is the result of a carefully planned development program. The initial task involves developing one or more conceptual flowsheets, including the POX autoclave and downstream purification and recovery steps. A laboratory program is completed to determine the technical viability of the flowsheets, define the operating parameters for each step and provide information for an initial economic assessment of the process. The process is then confirmed during a continuous pilot plant program, providing engineering design data and other information for the commercial design. A well-thought-out development program has been shown to be critical for reducing the risk of commercializing POX processes. Experiences developing POX processes for refractory gold ores and copper concentrates are briefly discussed. IntroductionPressure oxidation (POX) has become a common commercial operation for processing sulfide-bearing feedstocks. These feedstocks include gold ores and concentrates; copper concentrates; nickel concentrates and mattes; zinc concentrates; and molybdenum concentrates. Drivers for the development and commercialization of POX processes include:• The high cost for pyrometallurgical processing of sulfide ores, much of which is attributed to environmental controls.• The motivation to implement safe and more environmentally attractive alternatives for sulfide ores.• The need to process increasingly difficult ores with complex mineralogy.• Improvements made over the last 25 years in POX equipment design and experience operating commercial POX plants.Although the capital and operating costs for commercial POX processing can be high, this technology is capable of rapid oxidation of most sulfides and arsenic minerals in the feed, with little noxious gases and environmentally stable iron arsenate and other iron compounds in the POX residue (Marsden and House, 2006).In POX operations, sulfides are oxidized to either sulfates or elemental sulfur in an autoclave at elevated temperature and pressure with oxygen gas. I am sure it is obvious to all of you that a complete program of casualty and property insurance is as necessary for any tunneling contractor as it is for anyone else involved in trade in the United States today. Going beyond those general undefined terms, there are many areas that need specific attention, particularly for contractors, regardless of size. WORKERS' COMPENSATION Workers' Compensation is mandatory in all states and the District of Columbia. In most of the states, private insurance provides this coverage. In a few states, the state operates Workers' Compensation funds, some of which are competitive with the private sector and others are operated on a monopolistic basis. Under a monopolistic setup, you have no choice, you must buy coverage from the state. Self insurance of the Workers' Compensation risk is also an alternative in most jurisdictions. With a contractor operating only in the U.S., the coverage extensions are few in number. If your work brings you anywhere near navigable waterways or land extensions thereof, you should have both U. S. Longshoreman and Harborworkers' coverage, as well as Employer's Liability coverage for the master or members of the crew of a vessel.

In alkaline pulp, galena is depressed by sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), while Cu(II) -activated sphalerite exhibits a high floatability so that satisfactory separation can be achieved. In addition to hydrogen bonding, chemical bonding of NaCMC with galena is confirmed by infrared (IR) spectra; only hydrogen bonding is involved between NaCMC and Cu(II)-activated sphalerite. It is also found that the greater the degree of substitution and polymerimtion of NaCMC, the stronger the depressive effect of NaCMC and that lower stirring speed favors the depression.

This paper summarizes and evaluates data on mine subsidence ground movements and associated damage for houses in Illinois. Based on the data collected, the response of homes to subsidence ground movements is expressed in terms of repair costs. A damage criteria is then proposed that relates the ground movements and damage levels. The data were collected as part of a comprehen¬sive study performed for the Illinois Abandoned ?Lined Lands Reclamation Council, A -M-RC, by the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Illinois, and probably will be published in late 1934 by the council. The study concentrated its efforts on surface ground movements and the effects to houses over abandoned room and pillar mines. The resultant surface subsidences are commonly dish or bowl shaped and are termed sags. Method of Analysis The steps in analysis used to arrive at the proposed damage criteria are: 1. Canvas and rap subsidence damage in houses, 2. Assess the associated ground movements, 3. Estimate the damage repair cost, 4. Develop a damage/repair level classifica¬tion, 5. Correlate the associated ground movement, damage/repair level and home construction type, 6. Propose a damage criteria.

The Royal-Mountain King Project is 7.2 kilometers (4.5 miles) northwest of Copperopolis, California. Reserves of 8,250,000 t (9,100,000 st) at 2.32 g/t (0.068 oz/st) gold will be processed at 2500 t/d (2750 st/d) from three pits. Production is scheduled to begin the first quarter of 1989. District geology consists of northwest trending sequences of Jurassic meta-sedimentary and meta-volcanic rocks. Three ore bodies are located along the Hodson fault which trends northwest and dips 40 degrees northeast. The Gold Knoll and North Pit ore bodies are hosted in carbonate and silica altered meta-volcanic rocks whereas the Skyrocket ore body is hosted in quartz stockwork zones in meta-sedimentary rocks. Gold is present as inclusions and micro-veinlets in pyrite.

In Mineral Processing, the objective of most processes is the separation of mixtures of minerals, which are originally associated in composite particles. Feed preparation processes grinding for instance, which take place before beneficiation or separation processes do not usually break particles at the boundary between mineral phases. They produce composite ("middlings") as well as liberated particle. It is therefore necessary, in a particulate system, to determine the proportion of particles which are liberated as well as, ideally, the size distribution of minerals which remain associated in composite particles. Up to now, there has been a lack of experimental techniques to characterize completely composite particulate systems. Heavy liquid separation which is commonly used to obtain information of this type can only be applied to simple binary cases for which one mineral has a low density (lower than e.g 2.8 ). The technique which is proposed in this paper involves the measurement of parameters on polished sections of particles mounted in a matrix, and the use of mathematical transformations to reconstruct in three-dimensions the information obtained from these measurements .

For many years the green and dry compressive strengths' of pellets have been, considered as possible criteria of pellet performance during induration. Although widely quoted throughout the industry, little attention has been given to standardizing the unfired pellet compressive strength test or to determining the characteristics of the test. The purpose-of this study was to compare the constant deformation rate test with that using a constant loading rate in addition, the dependence of these tests on such pellet properties as size, weight, and method of balling was to be investigated.

A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

In this investigation, the changes in the grindability of both ulexite and colemanite related with the different structural modifications created by the heat treatment were examined with respect to work index (Wi). The effects of the heat treatment temperature and time on grindability index were also investigated. It was observed that, heat treatment significantly affected on the grindability of ulexite. The work index of original ulexite was found 7.11 kWh/shton and decreased to 3.5 kWh/shton level within 200-480°C for 60 minutes. On the other hand, the work index of original colemanite was found as 6.48 kWh/shton and no appreciable change was observed when heated up to 320°C. Thermally assisted comminution can be used to improve the grindability characteristics of ulexite. Besides, the different behaviour of ulexite and colemanite under heat treatment can be used for their separation. The artificial mixture of ulexite and colemanite could be separated with over 90% recovery by utilizing their different grindability characteristics by thermal treatment, semi-autogeneous grinding and screening.

"Lead ions (lead nitrate) were introduced to modify the surface properties of scheelite, effectively and selectively improving the flotability of scheelite, with benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) serving as the collector. A series of experiments about the mode of addition and the ratio of lead ion to BHA were conducted and indicated Pb-BHA complexes were the active species responsible for the flotation. And two adsorption models of BHA on the surface of scheelite were established. For both the two adding methods, some kind of complexes formed by lead ions and BHA played a key role in the flotation process. Zeta potential, FTIR, and XPS studies indicated that the adsorption amount and intensity of BHA on the surface of scheetlie were larger by adding the reagents as a mixture. The mixed addition is conducive to form Pb-BHA complexes and improve the adsorption efficiency of BHA on the surface of scheelite, as well as the recovery of scheelite. INTRODUCTION Scheelite, as an important tungsten-bearing mineral, is nowadays utilized mainly by flotation (YIN and WANG, 2014; Sun et al., 2011; Gao et al., 2015; Gao et al., 2015). Flotation separation of scheelite from calcium minerals creates difficulties because of the existence of the same cation in the minerals and similar physico-chemical characteristics such as solubility, hardness, specific gravity, point of zero charge (PZC), etc. (Arnold and Warren, 1974; Deng et al., 2016; Deng et al., 2015; Ozcan and Bulutcu, 1993a; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983). The conventional collectors used in the flotation of scheelite ores are generally fatty acids or fatty acid derivatives (Bo et al., 2015; Oliveira and Sampaio, 1988; Shi et al., 2014; Sivamohan, 1988; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983). It is difficult to separate scheelite, especially from calcite, with these reagents because the adsorption mechanism of these collectors occurs through chemisorption of the oleate ion onto the mineral surface (Atademir et al., 1979; Changgen and Yongxin, 1983; Hiçyìlmaz et al., 1993; Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, it is almost impossible to separate them by fatty acid flotation without using any selective depressant. Although oleoyl sarcosine was used as a selective collector in the flotation of fluorite and siliceous scheelite ores (Ozcan and Bulutcu, 1993b; Ozcan et al., 1994), this selectivity is inadequate for a low-grade calcitic scheelite ore. Unfortunately, reagents such as organic colloids (dextrine, starch), quebracho, sodium phosphates, sodium silicate solutions containing polyvalent cations (hydrosols), etc. (Bo et al., 2015; Schubert et al., 1990; Shi et al., 2014; Yongxin and Changgen, 1983), used for calcite depression also depress scheelite to a large extent. Cationic collectors, such as amine and quarternary ammonium (Yang et al., 2015) and collector mixture (Gao et al., 2015) have been used to improve the scheelite flotation. However they have not been applied in industry due to the poor separation from silicate minerals."

Flotation recovery of molybdenite particles finer than 15 micrones sharpy decreases with decreasing size. A totally hydrophobic latex agglomerant (UBC-1), which was previously reported to be very efficient in agglomerating hydrophobic fine coal, has been found to agglomerate fine molybdenite particles. The agglomeration takes place only in the presence of MIBC which is commonly used as a frother in molybdenite flotation. Adsorption tests confirmed that MIBC is adsorbed onto molybdenite. The effect of the agglomeration on flotation has been studied by floating fine molybdenite from mixtures with quartz using the UBC-l agglomerant and the MIBC frother. A significant improvement in the flotation of fine molybdenite has been observed in the presence of the UBC-l agglomerant. The best results have been obtained around pH 5.5 which corresponds to the iso-electric-point of molybdenite.
