This paper describes the performance of a modern compound trough profile spiral that is optimized for fine coal cleaning. Reduced performance (Tromp) curves are presented to compare these new spirals with older designs, as well as with other commonly used coal cleaning equipment. As an aid to equipment selection and circuit design, data are also presented to show how variables, such as flow rate, pulp density, and particle size affect efficiency and the separation specific gravity.

Japan's coal reserves are estimated at 8,583 million tons (according to the materials on X World Energy Conference,. 1976). Japan is a long island country in the shape of an elongated cashew nut whose top is pointing to the north and its lower tip is pointing to the west. And her major coal fields are located in the two extreme far parts of Hokkaido in the north and Kyushu in the south. On the other hand, Japan's major industrial center are located in the central part of the country far from either coal-producing areas. This fact places coal a great geographical disadvantage in comparison with petroleum whose refining bases are concentrated on the coastal regions virtually next to major industrial centers.

"The U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada conducted a study on the net import reliance of each North American country, and the impact of North American trade on the net import reliance of 12 nonfuel mineral commodities that are associated with advanced technology products: cadmium, cobalt, gallium, germanium, graphite, indium, lithium, nickel, rare earth elements, selenium, silver and tellurium. The combined results for North America, using 2014 data, showed greatly reduced net import reliance for nearly all of the commodities evaluated, which is largely the result of pooling the resources of production and recovery in Canada and Mexico of materials that are consumed in the United States. This study highlights the mitigation of potential supply risk for critical materials that results from trade within the North American trade bloc. IntroductionMultiple metrics and definitions exist for what constitutes a critical material, but there is broad acknowledgment that a mineral commodity may be considered critical if, among other factors, its production is geographically concentrated, if it has few or no substitutes, or if the country of origin is politically unstable. Numerous governmental and independent researchers have proposed methods of investigating criticality, with differing priorities such as economic resilience or strategic military supplies (European Commission, 2014; Graedel et al., 2015; U.S. National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Critical and Strategic Mineral Supply Chains, 2016). While criticality really depends on who is asking the question, and despite the differing priorities, there are several commodities that are commonly found to be of concern. In particular, some critical or potentially critical materials are used increasingly in advanced technologies, or they have complicated supply chains because they are coproduced or are produced in controlled markets.Commodities for which imports are required to satisfy domestic demand are those for which the importing country is net import reliant. "In this paper, we consider an underground production scheduling problem consisting of determining the proper time interval or intervals in which to complete each mining activity so as to maximize a mine’s discounted value while adhering to precedence, activity durations, and production and processing limits. We present two different integer programming formulations for modeling this optimization problem. Both formulations possess a resource-constrained project scheduling problem structure. The first formulation uses a fine time discretization and is better suited for tactical mine scheduling applications. The second formulation, which uses a coarser time discretization, is better suited for strategic scheduling applications. We illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of each formulation with examples.IntroductionProject scheduling is an important aspect of underground mine planning that consists of determining the start dates for a given set of activities so as to maximize the value of a project while adhering to operational and re-source-availability constraints. Important activities that require scheduling include development, drilling, stoping and other ore-extraction techniques, and backfilling. Precedence relation-ships impose an order in which activities can be carried out based on their location in the mine: for example, the activity a associated with development of an area must be completed before the activity a´ associated with extraction of that same area can begin. Re-sources include attributes of the mining operation, such as the amount of extraction and mill capacity available per time period, and are determined by capital and equipment availability and other factors. In this paper, for our set-ting, resource-availability constraints consider the amounts of material that can be extracted and sent to the mill — that is, processed — per time period."

Conventional concrete block plastered with a cemantitious coating is the most common material used in the construction of perma¬nent stoppings to direct airflow in underground mines in the U.S.A. All mines experience various degrees of strata convergence depending upon depth of overburden, geological conditions, and type of roof support employed. Strata convergence will cause cracks and joint openings in masonry stoppings, resulting in significant air leakage losses. Where strata convergence is severe, complete structural failure of the stopping can ultimately occur. Reconstruction of damaged or destroyed stoppings adds expensive overhead to mining operations, and even greater expenses are incurred from the additional fan horsepower required to overcome leakage losses. Ideally, a stopping should maintain high resistance to airflow while yielding to strata convergence. By properly incorporating "Max-Seal" polyisocyanurate rigid foam material within the masonry block structure, stopping service life can be increased several-fold in mines experiencing strata convergence problems such as floor heave, roof loading, and lateral rib movement.

"On January 9, 2014, a large chemical spill occurred on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV. Within hours, the potable water supply for more than 300,000 people was contaminated, and the incident captured national headlines for weeks. Although the primary chemical, crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol, or MCHM, is deemed nonhazardous, the impacts of the spill are significant – with all stakeholders, including the public, members of industry, and relevant government agencies experiencing losses. This case highlights the need for a more proactive approach to environmental management, shifting from crisis control and remediation to crisis prevention and risk management. INTRODUCTION On the morning of January 9, 2014, approximately 10,000 gallons of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a 48,000-gallon storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, West Virginia (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal, and is deemed nonhazardous in terms of transportation and storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries, Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility where the spill occurred from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein & McWhirter, 2014). The spill site was located just over a mile upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a “Do Not Use” order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a). With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the “Do Not Use” order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until January 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below this level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at concentrations as low as 0.55 ppb by individuals experienced in odor identification (Rosen et al., 2014); and even individuals with no such training can detect pure MCHM at just 7 ppb (WVTAP, 2014). The fact that this chemical can be sensed at such low levels – indeed far below those considered safe – undoubtedly added to growing public concern. In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until February 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAWb, 2014), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAWc, 2014)."

It is somewhat reassuring to note that the United States has an abundance of coal reserves which can be used to bridge the widening gap between the nation's energy production and consumption. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently established a demonstrated coal reserve base of 434 billion tons. (31)(Figure 1) As can be observed, the major percentage of the reserves is in the West. Although surface coal mining in the West has been gaining increased attention in recent years, western reserves that must be deep mined are significantly greater. Though deep mining activity in the west is very limited and accounts for less than 2% of the annual production, the primary reason, quite probably, is the greater thickness of the seams as compared to those found in the East. Forty-five billion tons of the western demonstrated coal reserve base for underground mining are in seams greater than 10 ft. in thickness. (37) Thick coal seams do not lend themselves readily to extraction with the underground mining methods practiced in the United States today. Experiences from the practices in other countries can serve only as guidelines. Consequently, a concerted effort is necessary to overcome the technical difficulties.

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

"INTRODUCTION Crossrail is a subsidiary company of Transport for London created for the construction of a new transverse train line 118 km long between Maidenhead and Heathrow in the West, and Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the East, including 21 km underground below London. Crossrail C305 Eastern Running Tunnels project is the biggest contract within Crossrail Project and involved boring 11.8 km of twin tunnels through London’s city center. Crossrail C305 Project interfaced with different contracts along its alignment and therefore logistics and solutions had to be developed to minimize disruptions or interferences with other contractors and the neighborhood. The paper describes this innovative approach. C305 CONTRACT APPROACH C305 contract was split into three drives, to be excavated by four EPB TBMs 7.1m diameter, as shown in Figure 1. •,Drive Y: 8.2km long between Limmo Peninsula and Farringdon Station in the city center •,Drive Z: 2.7km long between Pudding Mill Lane and Stepney Green Junction •,Drive G: 0.9km long between Limmo Peninsula and Victoria Dock Portal in the East. Crossrail C305 Project scope of works included the excavation of TBM tunnels and shafts at Limmo Peninsula and Stepney Green (including 17m span turnout caverns), along with the requirement to traverse station and shaft structures of other Crossrail contracts. Limmo Peninsula Site was a strategic element as it was the only access point on the tunnel alignment with sufficient available area at the surface for tunnelling logistics and also connected to the Lea River, tributary of the River Thames which facilitated marine operations for segment supply and muck removal. These were the reasons for operating Drive Y & Drive G TBMs from that location. Drive Z TBMs were originally planned to be launched from Stepney Green to Pudding Mill Lane, supplying the TBMs during Drive Z excavation from Limmo Peninsula site through the excavated section of Drive Y between Limmo and Stepney Green. During the early stages of the project, a value engineering proposal with a new tunneling strategy was agreed wherein the Pudding Mill Lane contractor would provide space for TBM assembly and operation in their portal, allowing for reversing Drive Z excavation and launching the two TBMs from Pudding Mill Lane. This optimization reduced some of the shaft requirements at Stepney Green which were contingent upon critical enabling works and provided program certainty and cost savings for the full Crossrail Project. It allowed for the reuse of both the Drive Z TBMs for Drive G excavation from Limmo to Victoria Dock Portal thereby saving on the procurement of two TBMs, in addition to easier logistics for both Drives Y&Z, therefore de-risking the TBM excavation process and the C305 Project program completion."

This paper is in three parts. Part I discusses the various types of cement clinker coolers now in full-scale operation. Part II is a detailed study of the criteria for selection of the type of cement clinker cooler best suited for a given installation. Part III covers a number of cooling problems and their solutions in some of the metals industries. The large and world-wide problem of cement clinker cooling has motivated much study and development and the coverage here of this work is somewhat detailed. In contrast the cooling problems of the metals industries are quite varied between industries and often quite different from plant to plant in the same industry because of basic differences in the requirements of the particular material being processed. Therefore the coverage of metals industries coolers is somewhat more general. It is believed that all of the technology covered here may be of interest to those working with the problems of cooling hot materials.

The Office of Mine Safety and Health Research, Spokane Mining Research Division, is continuing its high-energy, high-displacement testing of field-scale shotcrete panels. A test program was developed to determine the relationship between applied force, displacement and energy for both unreinforced and reinforced shotcrete panels. Reinforcement options consisted of synthetic macro-fibers, sprayed polyurea liners, chain-link mesh, welded-wire mesh and combinations of them. During testing, photogrammetry was used to measure the geometric changes of the panels, including volume changes and panel cracking. These measurements were correlated with the load and displacement data, allowing visual observation to be related to the applied force and displacement. The test results provide a comparison of the mechanical performance of the various panel types and can assist in interpreting the condition of installed surface support. Visual assessment of the loading cycle and strength capacity of shotcrete in underground excavations will improve mine safety by providing a means to better quantify the stability of installed shotcrete support.

An exploration bore core sample of coal ought to be reduced from its original cylindrical form to a particle size distribution and particle composition that reflects, insofar as possible, a process stream of? raw? coal it represents. Often, coal cores are reduced with a laboratory crushing machine, the product of which may not match the raw coal size distribution or size fraction composition. This study employs drop-shatter impact breakage followed by dry batch tumbling in a steel cylinder rotated about its transverse axis in order to characterize the core material in terms of first-order and zeroth-order breakage rate constants. These are indices of the propensity of the coal to degrade during excavation and handling. Initial drop-shatter and dry tumbling tests were done with synthetic cores, to reduce material variables and . conserve difficult-to-obtain coal cores.? Cores of three different coal beds --Illinois No.6, Upper Freeport, and Pocahontas No. 5 -were subjected to drop-shatter and dry batch tumbling tests to determine breakage response. Comparison of coal preparation plant feed with a crushed bore core and a bore core prepared by drop-shatter and tumbling (all from the same Illinois No.6 coal mining property) indicated that the size distribution and size fraction composition of the drop-shattered/tumbled core more closely resembled the plant feed than the crushed core.

As most of us have learned through prior and often frustrating experience, anyone proposing to construct a new or expanded mining-ore processing facility must first contend with a rather complex array of environmental laws and permitting regulations administered by a number of different Federal, State and local agencies. At our lost count, there were about 55 federal enactments affecting base and precious metals projects. Applicable State and local laws will usually increase that number significantly. The time and costs associated with complying with all these various regulatory programs usually constitutes one of the major areas of uncertainty in the development of a proposed project. There are many in the mining industry who firmly believe that these environmental regulation and permit programs necessarily causes significant delays and increased costs in the development of a project. This belief, unfortunately, is probably a result of a basic misunderstanding of how the environmental permitting and regulatory system actually works.

The Permian Salado Formation of west Texas and southeastern New Mexico is composed of halite and subordinate amounts of anhydrite, clay and potassium and magnesium-bearing evaporite minerals. Aspects of the geochemistry of the Salado Formation have been investigated through studies of the stratigraphy, mineral assemblages, textures and minor element content of the salts. These studies provide information on the origin of the evaporites when combined with data on equilibria in saturated salt solutions. The principal potash ore zone in the district is composed essentially of halite (NaC1) and sylvite (KC1). Data on the color, bromide content, and proportions of halite and sylvite suggest that this simple assemblage is the product of a series of replacements rather than primary precipitation. The bromide content of the salts also indicates that the brine which precipitated the Salado Formation was derived from the dissolution of older evaporites rather than the simple evaporation of sea water.

In the marbel industry, ore reserves refer to the produced tonnage of orthogonal prismatic, defect-free blocks of commercial sizes and of marketable aesthetical quality. On the contrary, in the mining sector, ore reserves refer to the tonnage of ore with grade above some cut-off value. While in the mining sector ore reserves are reported according to existing standard guidelines, the marble industry has no standardmethod. The purpose of this paper is to present a method to estimate white marble reserves using drill coring or borehole wall logging and limited joint mapping on exposed marble surfaces. Data pertaining to fracture orientation, fracture frequency, size, and whiteness were collected. The primary phase of marble characterization is followed by the discretization of the orebody into a three-dimensional array of orthogonal prismatic blocks, where the marble whiteness and fracture intensity are attribute values. Both these variables are considered to obey continuous and not discrete probability distributions. The discretization is performed using computer aided design and the Block Kriging techniques. An outline to improve the description of a given marble ore deposit at the exploration stage is presented for the prediction of marble block size distribution from joint count measurements along diamond drill cores. An example case of a white dolomitic marble quarry is used to demonstrate these methods.

"Phosphogypsum is a byproduct created during the production of industrial wet-process phosphoric acid. This study focused on recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from a Florida phosphogypsum sample and investigated the effects of removing detrimental impurities such as phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5 ), uranium (U) and fluorine (F) during the leaching process. Experimental results indicated that REE leaching efficiency increased rapidly, reached a maximum and then began to decrease with sulfuric acid concentrations ranging from 0 to 10 percent and temperatures ranging from 20 to 70 °C. At a sulfuric acid concentration of 5 percent and leaching temperature of 50 °C, REE leaching efficiency obtained a maximum value of approximately 43 percent. Increasing the leaching time or liquid/solid ratio increased the leaching efficiency. The leaching efficiencies of P2O5, U and F consistently increased with sulfuric acid concentration, temperature, leaching time and liquid/solid ratio within the testing ranges. A fine-grain gypsum concentrate, sized smaller than 40 µm, was separated from leached phosphogypsum through elutriation, in which the P2O5, U and F content levels were reduced by 99, 70 and 83 percent, respectively, from their content levels in fresh phosphogypsum. IntroductionPhosphogypsum is a byproduct generated during the industrial wet process of phosphoric acid production, in which sulfuric acid is used to digest phosphate rock. Gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), the main component of phosphogypsum, usually accounts for 65 to 95 percent of phosphogypsum by weight.There are small quantities of impurities in phosphogypsum, such as phosphates (H3PO4, Ca(H2PO4)2·H2O, CaHPO4·2H2O and Ca3(PO4)2), fluorides (NaF, Na2SiF6, Na3AlF6, Na3FeF6 and CaF), sulfates, trace metals and radioactive elements (Rutherford, Dudas and Arocena, 1996). Global phosphogypsum generation is estimated at 200 Mt/a (Parreira, Kobayashi and Silvestre, 2003; Yang et al., 2009), but only about 15 percent is recycled as building materials, agricultural fertilizers or soil stabilization amendments (Tayibi Choura and Lopez, 2009)."

Garnet is the general name for a family of complex silicate minerals having similar physical properties and crystallizing in the isometric (cubic) system. All garnets have the same general chemical formula but vary greatly in chemical composition. The name garnet is derived from the Latin word granatus, meaning like a grain, which refers to the mode of occurrence wherein crystals resemble grains or seeds embedded in the matrix. GEOLOGY Mineralogy Chemical Properties: The general formula for garnet is A3B2(SiO4)3, whereas A can be calcium, magnesium, ferrous iron, or manganese, and B can be aluminum. ferric iron, or chromium, or rarely titanium. The formulas and names of common garnet species are: [ ] Almandite and almandite-pyrope solid solution garnets are the best abrasive types, but andradite, grossularite, and pyrope also are used. All species of garnet have been used as gemstones. The structure of garnet consists essentially of isolated SiO, tetrahedra connected by oxygen-cation-oxygen bonds through the distinct A and B group cation sites. Within this structure magnesium, ferrous iron, and manganese easily interchange and substitute for each other in the A cation position, and calcium does so less readily. Additionally, aluminum, femc iron, and chromium substitute for each other to a limited extent in the B cation position. This ability to substitute or exchange ions without changing the crystal structure is called isomorphism, and garnet is one of the finest examples of a isomorphous series. Because of this isomorphism there is complete solid solution between certain garnet species but not between others. Fig. 1 illustrates these solid solution relationships. Some rare species of garnet are known that illustrate the wide range of cation substitution that the garnet crystal structure can accommodate. They include: [ ] These rare species are not of interest for industrial applications, but can be of interest to mineralogists and the gem industry. Physical Properties: Garnet displays the greatest variety of color of any industrial mineral. Garnets have been found in all colors except blue. For example, grossularite can be colorless, white, gray, yellow, yellowish green, various shades of green, brown, pink, reddish, or black. Andradite garnet can be yellow- green, green, greenish brown, orangy yellow, brown, grayish black or black. Pyrope is commonly purplish red, pinkish red, orangy red, crimson, or dark red; and almandite is deep red, brownish red, brownish black or violet-red. Spessartite garnet can be red, reddish orange, orange, yellow-brown, reddish brown, or blackish brown. A few garnets exhibit a color-change phenomenon. They are one color when viewed in natural light and another color when viewed in incandescent light. Because of the great variation in color of garnet within each species and similarities in color between garnets of different species it is recommended that garnet identification not be based on color alone. The Mohs hardness of garnet varies from 6.5 to 9.0. Grossularite and uvarovite have a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5; andradite is 6.5 to 7.0; and pyrope, almandite, and spessartite are 7.0 to 7.5 in hardness. There are reports of almandite having a hardness of between 8.0 and 9.0. As with hardness, the specific gravity of garnet varies considerably. The specific gravity may be as low as 3.2 or as high as 4.3 depending on chemical composition. Garnet crystallizes in the isometric system with rhombic dodecahedra and trapezohedra the most common forms. Crystals also form in combinations of dodecahedra and trapezohedra or either of these in combination with hexoctahedra. Crystals can have cubic or octahedral faces, but these are rare. Under favorable conditions of formation garnet will crystalize in nearly perfect forms that rival study models. Garnet also forms as irregular blebs, grains, knots, or masses, with or without distinguishable crystal faces, and as coarse- or fine-grained granular masses that appear to be totally lacking in crystal form. The fracture of garnet also shows great variation. In some garnets, particularly those that are well crystallized and glassy in appearance, the fracture is subconchoidal to conchoidal. Other, more poorly crystallized garnets exhibit a fracture that can only be described as uneven. Garnet occasionally has an indistinct dodecahedral cleavage. Certain species of garnet from specific locations have a pronounced laminated structure consisting of planes of weakness along which parting takes place. This parting may resemble cleavage, but since it is mechanical and not related to crystal structure it is not true cleavage. The optical properties of garnet are sensitive to even small changes in chemical composition or strain in the crystal structure. For this reason each species does not have a single index of re- fraction (IR) but has a range of 1Rs. Uvarovite in its pure form should have an IR of 1.870, but in nature samples vary from 1.74

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is an occupational health hazard in underground mines. It generally occurs in the submicrometer size range and is often present in the mine atmosphere with significant concentrations of dust particles that tend to occur in the supramicrometer size range. As dust can interfere with analytical methods to measure DPM, it is often removed from a sample stream using an impactor-type size selector such as the DPM impactor (DPMI). Because the DPMI physically removes oversized particles from the stream, its performance may be gradually reduced with aging. Sharp-cut cyclones (SCCs) are an alternative size selector for DPM sampling applications, with a major advantage that, by design, they should not be susceptible to rapid aging. This paper presents the results of a field study designed to compare the performance of aged versus new/clean DPMIs and SCCs in an underground mine. DPMI aging resulted in clogging of the device and, eventually, a reduction of its effective particle cut size, but when sample flow rate was maintained, DPM sample mass collection was not affected until significant aging had occurred. Under the conditions of this study, the effects of SCC aging were observed to be minimal at the end of the study period. IntroductionSubmicrometer-sized particles are increasingly recognized as significant respiratory health hazards (Cantrell and Watts, 1997; Kenny, Gussman and Meyer, 2000; Ristovski et al., 2012). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) represents a major source of submicrometer particles in both public and occupational environments (Kittelson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). Relative to other occupational groups, underground miners can have some of the highest DPM exposures due to their work in confined spaces where large diesel equipment is used (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2002; Grau et al., 2004). DPM largely consists of solid elemental carbon (EC), commonly known as soot, and organic carbon (OC) that may be sorbed to EC particles (Kittleson, 1998; Abdul-Khalek et al., 1998). EC and OC can be measured by thermal-optical methods such as the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method (Birch, 2016), and their sum is referred to as total carbon (TC). While the complex nature of DPM does not allow for its direct measurement, both TC and EC have been accepted as suitable surrogates for monitoring occupational exposures to DPM (Noll et al., 2007; Birch, 2016)."

NTRODUCTION In the mining industry, a "drill jumbo" is a drilling unit equipped with one or more rock drills and mounted on a mechanical conveyance. Jumbos range from single¬drill ring drills mounted on simple steel skids to sophisti¬cated multiple-drill units mounted on diesel engine powered carriers and equipped with automatic controls and sound-abatement cabs. Individual types of jumbos usually are designed for specific tasks such as fan drilling in sublevel caving operations. Some units, such as development jumbos, can be utilized for several functions in addition to their normal applications, e.g., for production drilling in room-and-pillar operations, stoping in cut-and-fill mining, etc. Mine operators can purchase individual components from manufacturers, assembling these components into a jumbo suitable for specific conditions. However, this requires that mine personnel have good engineering and mechanical abilities. Although manufacturers of jumbos maintain facilities for designing machines to meet con¬ditions created by new mining methods and unusual ap¬plications, the cost of the engineering and experimental work for new types of jumbos should be evaluated in terms of both costs and benefits; it may be advantageous to plan the mining operation so that existing and proven units can be utilized. GENERAL SELECTION CRITERIA Since the operating conditions vary in underground mines, the design of a jumbo must be selected to cope with the individual characteristics of the mine. The necessary considerations include access space into the working areas, grades expected to be encountered, radii of the curves, ambient temperatures, the characteristics of the rock, the acidity or alkalinity (pH rating) of the mine water, etc. Access to Mine Workings The mine workings must be accessible to the selected jumbo. Frequently, a jumbo must be disassembled at least partially to pass through the mine shafts. There¬fore, a bolted construction allowing disassembly into pieces of suitable size and weight is desirable in most applications. Type of Undercarriage Generally, a crawler-type undercarriage should not be used in trackless mines having acidic mine water. The acidic water causes an electrolytic action between the individual crawler parts and causes rapid corrosion and early failures. Propulsion A two-wheel drive on a pneumatic-tired jumbo is marginal for grades exceeding 12%. A four-wheel drive unit with good weight distribution is capable of operat¬ing on grades of up to 35%. At least 30% of the gross vehicle weight (GVW) should be carried on the steering axle; otherwise, the steering tires may not have sufficient traction on loose road surfaces and may "plow" instead of steer. To assure stable operation in mines with steep grades, the height of the center of gravity of the jumbo should be considered. It should not make the unit prone to rolling over on the steep grades that may be encoun¬tered. Turning Ability In confined working areas, a skid-steering or crawler unit has the best maneuverability. An articulated carrier is preferable when base-rotated parallel booms are being utilized. A rigid-frame jumbo with automotive steering is compact and economical, having lower maintenance requirements than the other two types. However, the turning radius of a rigid-frame unit is wider than either the skid-steering or articulated units, and this wider turning radius may be detrimental in mines with narrow drifts. JUMBO COMPONENTS Rail Undercarriages A mine with a rail-transportation system generally utilizes drill jumbos that are mounted on rail-type under¬carriages. With a light load and good weight distribu¬tion, this carrier may consist of a simple two-axle four-wheel platform onto which the boom-mounting brackets are attached. As the depth of the round and the penetration rates increase, the weight of the equip¬ment installed on the chassis also increases. The greatest problem with a heavy overhung load is balancing the carrier; a three-boom unit may require a substantial amount of counterweighting to maintain an acceptable 70% to 30% axle-load balance. Although lengthening the wheelbase helps balance the unit, a long wheelbase increases the turning radius, often creating problems on curves and sometimes requiring a swivel truck-type chassis. A good rule of thumb for a simple four-wheel undercarriage is to maintain a wheelbase length to track gage-width ratio that does not exceed 2.5 to 1.0. For a larger ratio, a swivel truck should be utilized. Swing-out outriggers or roof jacks help keep a jumbo in place during the drilling cycle. Usually, a rail-mounted jumbo is not self-propelled. Instead, it is maneuvered into place by a locomotive. Occasionally, several headings are being advanced in close proximity, and a self-propelled jumbo is con¬venient. In electrified mines, such a jumbo utilizes conventional battery-powered traction gear; in dieselized mines, hydrostatic drive components offer good flexi¬bility. Mine planners must select a single pit for design with the knowledge that the grades on which this selection is made are uncertain. This uncertainty is often ignored through the use of deterministic models of grade. This makes the mine planner?s job simpler but does not necessarily lead to the ?correct? or ?best? selection. Grade uncertainty is typically modeled with conditional simulation, which generates multiple possible realizations of grade that are equally probable (or improbable). M ethods for incorporating grade uncertainty into mine planning to date have either been perceived as being too complicated, not accessible or too time-consuming. This paper proposes a simple and efficient modeling approach to incorporating conditional simulation into pit optimization, which would be able to be applied in currently commercially available software. An example for R esolute M ining Ltd.?s Syama gold project in M ali shows the range of ore, grade and value outcomes associated with generating pits through a variety of methods.
