General. Data for the operating information given in the 15 tables in this chapter was obtained from voluminous questionnaires sent to over 100 operating companies in 1972. There has been a considera¬ble change since then in supply and power costs and many companies have had expansions or revisions since that time, so it must be realized that information is valid for the year 1972. This is true except for the three new properties of Sacaton, Metcalf, and Pinto Valley. These three operations started up since 1972 and all information for them was obtained in 1975. The questionnaires were sent to all major copper properties throughout the world as well as to many smaller units and to some mines that had complex or unusual conditions. Properties for which no information is given did not submit completed questionnaires. Several operations were unable to supply information requested be¬cause of company policy prohibiting it. However, data is presented for 75 different operating properties. The reference number of the left-hand column is the same for all 15 tables of data. If the company had several operating properties as of 1972, then subsequent properties use the same number but a different letter. For example, Anaconda's property at Butte, Mont., is IA, whereas Anaconda's (now Anamax) Twin Buttes property in Arizona is IB. Table I gives general data for the properties including exact loca¬tion, milling rate, pertinent assay values and recoveries, and a brief listing of ore and gangue minerals. It was not possible to obtain any more information from the properties in Chile except that given in Table I. Crushing. Crushing plant operating data is given in Table 2. This table gives data on the crushers, feeders, and screens used at each property. The data obtained on feeders was confusing, but, rather than completely eliminate this information, it was decided to report it as given. The confusion lies only in the description of where the feeder is located. Where a primary feeder is listed it was not possible to determine if this feeder was on primary feed or primary discharge. For secondary feeders it is known that the feeder listed usually is feeding the secondary crushers, but at some properties it is handling the secondary crusher discharge. The same reasoning holds true for tertiary feeders-they handle either tertiary feed or discharge. This table contains a voluminous amount of data. A column giving tons per day per square foot of screen area would have been very informative, but some properties included circulating load in the feed rate and others listed new feed only, so calculations were meaningless. Autogenous Mills. The use of autogenous or semiautogenous mills for any property must be given serious consideration in the future. Table 3 lists data for four properties that are fully autogenous and four more semiautogenous mills that use balls to supplement the chunks of ore. This method of grinding is especially applicable when the ore is of such a nature that crushing problems would be severe, such as when ore is wet or sticky or contains a lot of fines. Paradoxically, it should also be considered when ore is tough and hard and blocky because then the competency of the ore means it can serve well as the grinding media. Where the ore varies greatly in hardness, as at Cyprus Pima and Lornex, semiautogenous grinding has been especially beneficial with capital costs and operating costs both 10-20% lower than could be obtained with conventional crushing and grinding. Rod Mills. For a great many years the standard milling operation used two- or three-stage crushing followed by open circuit rod mills and then ball mills in closed circuit with classifiers of some kind. A surprising number of properties crush to the fine size of about 3/8 in. and then use ball mills only, in closed circuit, with no rod mills. It is difficult to say whether rod mill-ball mill circuits or ball mill only is the best. One can be certain of two things: (1) the argument will go on for a long time and (2) for some mills one method obviously was superior over the other. As ball mills of 14, 15 ft, and larger came into use, more properties like Duval Sierrita (16b ft diam by 19 ft long) and Bougainville (18 x 21 ft) were built with single-stage ball mill grinding. Although there are larger rod mills used, especially in the iron ore industry, the largest rod mills on copper ore are at Twin Buttes (14 x 18.5 ft) and at Gibraltar (13'A x 20 ft). A combination of chemical, statistical, geographic, and microscopic analyses reveal that sulfur in West Virginia coals is extremely variable in both form and abundance. Coals in southern West Virginia typically contain less than 1% total sulfur with organic sulfur being the dominant species. Northern West Virginia coals average about 2% total sulfur, mainly contributed by sulfur minerals. In addition to these regional trends, significant variations in sulfur form and abundance exist both vertically and laterally within individual seams. On both regional and local scales, the pyritic sulfur component can vary significantly in mineralogy, particle shape, maceral association, and particle size.

Accurate prediction of the partition coefficients in coal gravity separation is key to improving the preparation efficiency of coal and promoting its clean utilization. In China, the approximate formula method (AFM) has been applied to the calculation of coal gravity separation partition coefficients for decades, but its accuracy is limited. To improve the accuracy of the predicted partition coefficients, and thus the product yield of coal preparation plants, the present study proposes a modified hyperbolic tangent model to derive direct calculation formulas for the heavy medium and water medium separation partition coefficients. Four groups of coal samples were used to verify the accuracy of the direct formulas, and their predictions were compared with those of the AFM. The results showed that the partition coefficients and partition curves predicted by the direct formulas were closer to the actual values than those predicted by the AFM. Further, when the cleaned coal ash content was basically the same, the cleaned coal yield predicted by the direct formula was lower than that predicted by the AFM, and was also closer to the actual value. These results demonstrate that the direct formula produces more accurate results compared to the conventional AFM. As this formula has a reasonable theoretical basis, is simple to apply, and produces accurate results, it is expected to help improve the design and management level of coal preparation plants.

The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process through an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model was recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationships between the Langmuir constants a and b and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by laboratory test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures that apply the Langmuir model to the relationships between the Langmuir constants a and b and temperature. Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters a and b. The results from these published isothermal tests indicate that (1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir constant a and temperature, (2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model whose temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between the Langmuir constant b and temperature, and (3) the relationship between the Langmuir constant b and temperature can be described by both exponential and linear relationships with dried coal. This paper provides a database for the temperature-dependent Langmuir model that can be used for the reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoirs and for the coal seam degasification modeling of underground coal mines, considering the heating effects induced by geothermal and heat injection through factors such as hot water, hot steam and ultrasonics.

This paper describes the laboratory study which permitted an exploration of high grinding ball consumption in the secondary open circuit wet grinding mills at the Sidbec-Normines plant, Port Cartier, Québec. Corrosion undoubtedly exists but is of minor importance. Abrasion resulting from the physical nature of the company's iron concentrate is the main reason for the high ball wear. It was found that at least 30% reduction in ball consumption is possible by decreasing attrition grinding through the use of lifters in the mill. At the industrial level this would entail more lifters and/or higher lifters in the mill linings.

Electrowinning and solvent extraction are crucial steps in the production of high-purity copper. However, safety concerns have been raised regarding the acid mist generated from the electrowinning process. The mist generated results in health risks to workers and damage to machinery and infrastructure. Currently, chemicals and pellets are used to control acid mist. However, the effectiveness of these controls may vary depending on the type of organic solvent used in the solvent extraction process, which can influence the generation of acid mist. This study aims to evaluate the impacts of organic solvents and surfactants on acid mist suppression. In this study, an electrolyte is contacted with organic solvents to simulate the solvent extraction. The electrolyte is dosed with 20 mg/L of surfactant at each contact. Acid mist testing is performed on the electrolyte separated from the organic phase at the end of the solvent extraction step. The mist collected is analyzed to determine the level of acid mist generated. The results of this study indicate that organic solvents and surfactants showed significant acid mist suppression, but with somewhat different suppression efficiencies. After first contact, Licorice and the organic, for instance, showed a suppression efficiency of up to 69.7% but its efficiency gradually decreased as the number of contacts increased.

Depression of copper sulfides followed by MoS2 flotation is the most commonly practiced technique for Cu-MO separation. Although numerous organic depressants have been developed in the past, a majority of the currently used copper depressants are inorganic compounds (ex. NaHS, Nokes reagent, etc.). A unique advantage of organic depressants over the inorganic compounds is the potential versatility for design of the organic molecule to suit many requirements. The present study was initiated to systematically investigate the structure- activity relationships for a large number of organic complexing agents in comparison with the commonly used inorganic depressants that are often inefficient and hazardous. The results obtained in this study are discussed in light of the useful correlation obtained between practical solution redox potential and depressant activity. Several requirements, such as the presence of an active -SH and hydrophilic -OH or -COOH in the organic molecule, are identified for a reagent to be a satisfactory depressant. Some preliminary results on the desorbability (or destruction) of collector coating on the sulfide surfaces in the non-xanthate collector systems are also discussed.

"This paper describes a rib-control methodology that uses standing support to provide most of the lateral resistance to the rib. The method is analyzed, and its boundary conditions for rib control are described. In this method, an animal-fencing mesh product covers 80 percent of the rib surface and is sparsely bolted to the rib. Can supports or other similar stiff supports are installed primarily as roof support for the entry. As the rib spalls and dilates, the mesh catches the material and expands, pressing against the standing support. Mining proceeds, and vertical roof loads increase the normal force on the Can supports, causing friction at the top and bottom of the support to go up, thereby improving lateral resistance to rib swelling.At one mine in the western United States, this method has proved excellent at preventing the buildup of rib spall. It substantially reduces the number of bolts used for screen installation, improves installation efficiency, reduces manual labor and provides more rib coverage than many screening methods. Because standing support is typically part of the roof-control plan in longwall tailgates, no additional standing-support costs are incurred. IntroductionRib safety in underground coal mines is an oft-studied topic because ribs are high-hazard areas. An overview of early rib safety research can be found in Jones and Mohammed (2014). There is a significant difference between rib support and rib control. Support improves safety through the installation of strengthening elements, such as bolts and dowels, designed to reduce rib spalling. Although spall reduction is preferred, controlling how the rib fails is enough to ensure safety in some situations. Rib control uses external elements to provide confinement, thereby holding sloughed material in place, or to prevent falling rib material from striking mine personnel. This paper presents a study of a control method used on the pillar side of a longwall coal mine tailgate in the western United States."

The Kennecott Ridgeway Mine in South Carolina is scheduled to complete mining and ore processing in the last quarter of 1999. Tailings are disposed in a 300 acre, lined tailings impoundment. To facilitate closure and reclamation, modification of the tailings impoundment operation has been adopted. Mining involved the sequenced development of two open pits. In 1996 mining of the South Pit was completed and backfilling of the pit with waste rock from the North Pit was initiated and will continue until mining ceases. Both pits will be reclaimed as fresh water lakes. This paper presents the physical, geochemical and hydrogeochemical evaluation of the operational and post operational management of the project. Comparison of the operational monitoring data against predicted performance is reviewed.

Most governments recognize that energy efficiency represents a partial solution to reducing global capital shortages and environmental crises that threaten to seriously impede economic growth. Much of the United States and many foreign countries are embracing the concept of Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) which incorporates Supply Side Management (SSM) and Demand Side Management (DSM). Since SSM comes at twice to three times the cost of DSM, it makes economic sense to employ the energy conservation techniques of DSM. This paper will explain these concepts and some of the incentives being put forward by governments and utilities to promote DSM.

In a flotation froth (and foam), air bubbles become larger due to coalescence, causing less hydrophobic particles to drop off. A bubble-coarsening model has been developed by calculating the changes in Plateau border area as a function of the initial bubble size at the base of a foam, liquid fraction, and foam height and then relating the predicted Plateau border area to the critical rupture thickness of lamellae film. The model predicts that bubble coarsens with increasing froth height, decreasing frother dosage, and decreasing aeration rate. The model predictions are in good agreement with actual bubble size measurements.

Pillar stability continues to be a significant concern in multiple-level mining conditions, particularly for deep mines when pillars are not stacked or the thickness of interburden between mining levels is thin. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to investigate the stability of pillars in multiple-level limestone mines. In this study, FLAC3D models were created to investigate the effect of interburden thickness, the degree of pillar offset between mining levels, and in situ stress conditions on pillar stability at various depths of cover. The FLAC3D models were validated through in situ monitoring that was conducted at a multiple-level stone mine. The critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between the mining levels on top-level pillar stability was explored, where the top level mine was developed first followed by the bottom level mine. The model results showed that there is an interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of pillars in multiple- level conditions. A combination of these factors may lead to various degrees of pillar instabilities. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurred when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70%. On the contrary, the highest degree of stability occurs when the pillars are stacked, the underlying assumption is that the interburden between mining levels is elastic (never fails). Generally, for depths of cover investigated in this study, the stability of top-level pillars shallower than 100 m (328 ft) or with interburden thicknesses greater than 1.33 times the roof span—16 m (52.4 ft) in this study—does not appear significantly impacted by pillar offset. The results of this study improve understanding of multiple-level interactions and advances the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of pillar instability in underground stone mines.

Blast movement measurement (BMM) transmitters are a practical method to measure three-dimensional (3D) rock movement because of blasting. The BMM transmitters are activated, programmed and installed in specially designed drill holes prior to the blast and the BMM detector locates the transmitters after the blast. The BMM software then calculates and summarizes the 3D movement of each BMM transmitter ball. This information helps to redefine the ore and waste boundaries and enables improved ore and waste selection, resulting in a genuine step change in grade control. The BMM program was carried out at Newmont Mining Corp.?s Phoenix Mine, in northern Nevada near the town of Battle Mountain. The mine is in a historic mining district that contains gold, silver and copper. The geology of the pit consists of different formations made up of sandstone, siltstone, limestone, chert-pebble conglomerate, shale, skarn and quartzite, to name a few. Some of the rock is extremely hard and a powder factor of up to 0.5 kg/t (1 lb/st) is required to get adequate fragmentation to ensure sufficient throughput through the crusher and the mill. The result of using such a high powder factor translates into considerable blast movement and heave. This movement means that the ore/waste digging polygons estimated by the ore control engineer from sampling the initial blast holes will no longer be located in their original posi-tions. The purpose of this project was to test the measurement method and to see if locating the digging polygons in the broken muck pile and excavating to those polygons will improve grade control through the mill. Case studies (Zhang, 1994), (Taylor, 1995), (Gilbride, 1995), (Harris, 1997), (Taylor, 2003), Barrick Goldstrike (Gold-strike Mine, 2008), Ruby Hill Mine (Hilkewich, 2009), (Porcupine Mine, 2005) and (Aguirre, 2010) have shown that, by accounting for the blast movement, there is a potential to increase mineral recovery by as much as 25 percent for individual blasts for only a modest cost increase.

"In recent years, use of mineral processing tailings as a paste backfill has been significantly increased due to the environmental problems occurred during the disposal of the tailings in mine area. The paste material used to fill the stopes excavated is generally consisted of tailings (solid ratio: 70–85%) and cement (3-7%w/w). Meanwhile, the strength of the paste material is completely related to ratios of these materials. Cemented Paste Backfill (CPB) system is used as support depending on the roof pressure and also as an underground disposal method. Therefore, temporary strength value of the paste material gains a great importance. For example, the paste backfill material must compensate the minimum 4 MPa strength value in order to procure the permanent fortification, and the mixture cost must be minimal as well. For this reason, in this study, the Pb-Zn tailings were used to prepare for the paste backfill material using cement in order to perform the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests. Additionally, a statistical experimental design and linear programming techniques was used to find the optimum mixture in terms of strength and cost. The pulp solid ratios (PSR) of the tailings and cement (by the solid) were varied as 75-85% and 3-8%, respectively. The results of this study; the optimum mixture is ~79.5%PSR and 6.8% cement ratio (by the solid) for 4 MPa UCS (28 day) and 16-17 cm slump value determined by this method with statistically reviewed experimental data. INTRODUCTION Fine-grained tailing waste materials resulting from mining activities are an important environmental problem. In terms of environmental protection, the use of tailings with paste backfill is a very attractive approach and a desirable solution to tailings management. Paste backfill, which is used to fill underground openings, is made by primarly mine tailings mixed with hydraulic binders and water. Its main benefits are not only disposal of mine tailings in underground, but also providing a certain strength to ensure a safe working environment. Therefore, it is necessary to use hydraulic binders due to durability of the system (Benzaazoua et al., 2004). Paste backfill, formed from the mix of dewatered plant tailings (75-85 wt. % solids), water and binder (3-8 wt. %) (Brackebusch, 1994; Landriault et al., 2005).Water is used to determine the chemical reactions between tailing and binder materials for strength as well as increasing pumpability. Portland cement and ash can be used as binder materials (Douglas and Malhotra, 1987). The factors which affect strength and stability of paste backfill separate into two groups called interior and exterior factors. Interior and exterior factors determine the strength, stability and deformation features of backfill in short and long terms and also affect the transportation of backfill to underground (Benzaazoua et al., 2004; Erçikdi et al., 2006; Yilmaz et al., 2010; Nasir and Fall, 2010). Material properties of tailings as well as site operations to fill the underground openings are the most important steps for the design purposes. Grain size distribution, chemical, and physical properties of tailings, and mechanical properties of paste fill material are used to understand the suitability of tailings as paste fill material (Ozturk et al., 2014). In addition, Fig. 1. is also proposed to apply a typical design for the operational stages of paste fill applications on the site."

Wollastonite, named after W.H. Wollaston, an English chemist and mineralogist, is a calcium metasilicate having the chemical formula CaSiO2. Although it is a unique mineral, wollastonite has a short history of industrial use. Wollastonite is the only naturally occurring, nonmetallic, white acicular mineral. Its acicularity is the main reason for its ascendancy in the late 1970s and 1980s as a reinforcing filler and as a replacement for short-fiber asbestos and short-fiber milled fiberglass. Wollastonite is used in applications ranging from bowling balls to automobile fenders, from ceramic tile to automobile brakes, and from thermal insulation board to protective industrial coatings. The United States is the largest producer of wollastonite, with China, India, and Finland as the other three major sources. The United States, Europe, and the Far East are where most of the production is consumed. Geology Mineralogy and Physical and Chemical Properties Wollastonite, a member of the pyroxenoid mineral group, has the theoretical composition of 48.3% CaO and 51.7% SiO2. Iron, manganese, magnesium, or strontium may substitute for some of the calcium. Commonly associated minerals include garnet, diopside, calcite, quartz, epidote, apatite, and sphene. Some of the physical properties of wollastonite are listed in [Table 1]. Wollastonite is largely chemically inert; however, it can be decomposed in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Some wollastonite will fluoresce under shortwave or longwave ultraviolet light, or both, with colors ranging from pink-orange to yellow-orange and, more rarely, bluish green. In addition, wollastonite may show phos¬phorescence. Because of its unique cleavage properties wollastonite breaks down during crushing and grinding into lath-like or needle-shaped particles of varying acicularity. This particle morphology imparts high strength and is therefore of considerable importance in many of the markets for wollastonite. The acicularity of particles is defined by their length:width, or length:diameter, ratio (i.e., aspect ratio). Individual particles, even the smallest ones, commonly ex¬hibit an aspect ratio of 7:1 or 8:1 and have an average diameter of 3.5 gm. Low aspect ratio products (powder wollastonite, or milled grades) with 3:1 to 5:1 aspect ratios are used as general fillers, in ceramics, and in metallurgical fluxing. High aspect ratio products with ratios of 15:1 to 20:1 are used as functional fillers for rein¬forcing thermoplastic and thermoset polymer compounds and as a replacement for asbestos. The dry brightness and whiteness of wollastonite are also important in determining its suitability for certain filler and ceramic applications. When pure, the mineral is brilliantly white, but impurities may color it cream or gray. Brightness is determined by measuring the reflectance of finely ground powder against a stan¬dard that is assigned a brightness of 100. Magnesium oxide and barium sulfate are the two standards used. G.E. brightness, a term used in North America, refers to brightness measured with a Gen¬eral Electric reflectometer. Commercial wollastonite products usu¬ally have a G.E. brightness ranging from 85 to 95. The Hunter method is also used to measure the brightness of wollastonite. Loss on ignition (LOI), another important property in determining applications for wollastonite, is the amount of volatile matter driven off when the mineral is heated to 1 000°C. Com¬mercial wollastonite products have an ignition loss ranging from 0.5 to 2.0%. Wollastonite's naturally high pH of 9.9 (10% water slurry) is of major importance to its use in the coatings industry. Coatings formulators use milled grades as a pH stabilizer in interior and exterior PVA (polyvinyl acetate) and acrylic latex paints. There are two polymorphs of calcium silicate: wollastonite, a low-temperature form, and pseudowollastonite, a high-temperature form. Conversion of wollastonite to pseudowollastonite occurs at about 1 120°C and results in an increase in the coefficient of expansion and a color change. Pure white wollastonite may change to a cream tint or to various shades of red or brown. This color change is thought to be due to the presence of iron and/or strontium.

Phosphate mining in Florida generates approximately 100,000 tons/day of phosphatic clays (slime). This waste slime not only creates one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also causes tremendous loss of P2O5. About 20-30% of the phosphate mined end up in phosphatic clays. Recovering the phosphate from this waste is difficult for two main reasons: 1) the slime is extremely fine in size, and 2) clay minerals account for almost half of the material. A half dozen dispersants were evaluated for keeping the clay minerals suspended for subsequent separation from non-clay minerals by either settling or cycloning. The separation efficiency and economics are discussed.

The White Pine Copper Company, subsidiary of Copper Range Company, is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The offices, plant, and mine are six miles south of Lake Superior in Ontonagon County. Employing 1700 people, White Pine is the largest single industry in the Upper Peninsula. 970 underground employees produce 16, 700, tons of ore daily. From this tonnage 363,400 pounds of refined Lake Copper are produced in various shapes as specified by the customer. The following paper explains the geology of the ore body and briefly outlines present mining methods. It enumerates the reasons for considering longwall mining of a hardrock* ore body and the preliminary investigations leading to the decision to undertake the initial test panel. Selection of the initial test panel location is covered in detail. Equipment choice and reasons for that choice are described as well as selection and training of personnel.

Preliminary figures from the US Mine Safety and Health Administration show 801 underground metal mines and 490 surface metal mines, at the end of 1981, up from 663 and 383, respectively, in 1980. Preliminary MASH figures also show 207 underground nonmetal mines and 1070 surface nonmetal mines at the end of 1981, compared with 167 and 1092, respectively, last year. In addition, preliminary MASH figures show there were 14,676 mineral extraction operations on the surface and 3845 underground at the end of 1981, versus 14,951 and 3675, respectively, for last year. The number of mines, then, in three of four categories increased significantly, while having a lower net total of just 2% in the other category. And the number of underground extraction operations increased nearly 5% for the year, while surface operations were down less than 2%. But despite operations totals that mostly held their own or showed significant increases, it was a tough year for the nation's mining industry. The nonferrous segment of the industry had a bad year and 1982 may be no better, according to Business Week (Jan. 11, 1982), which adds that a turnaround is impossible unless the general economy recovers. Even then, with diminishing markets and overcapacity plaguing its products, the mining industry's condition "will be far from robust," the magazine says. The basic problem is that nonferrous metals-aluminum, copper, lead, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc-are tied to the most troubled sectors of the US economy. As recently as 1979, for example, more than 40% of all aluminum shipments went to the construction and transportation industries. Last year, these markets were down to 35% of aluminum shipments. And molybdenum sales to steel producers dropped by nearly 15% last year. Moreover, nonferrous products ended 1981 at disastrously low prices. Molybdenum oxide sold at $8.77/kg ($3.98/lb), half its $17.63/kg ($8/lb) price earlier in 1981 and aluminum was listed at $1.08/kg ($0.49/lb), compared with $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) a year earlier. The Comex price of copper was $1.54/ kg ($0.70/lb), down from $3.11/kg ($1.41/lb) in early 1980, in real terms the worst copper price in 30 years. Lower prices led operators to cut their output and increase layoffs, shut down mines, and defer capital spending projects. In December, Duval Corp., a Pennzoil Co. subsidiary, shut all four of its US copper mines until March. Aluminum Co. of America had laid off 7.3% of its work force, shut nine of its 38 smelting lines, and entered 1982 operating at only 68% of capacity. Inco Ltd., the Free World's largest nickel producer, lost money in 1981, an estimated $11 million, for the first time since 1932. And, like Falconbridge Nickel Mines and other major nickel producers, had cut back on nickel production and was operating at only 63% of capacity (Forbes, Feb. 15, 1982). Amax, the country's largest molybdenum producer, had cut production by 20%. And Hanna Mining Co. sold lead for $5.07/kg ($2.30/lb), about $1.54/kg ($0.70/lb) below what it cost to produce. Another problem is that copper companies in the next few years must come to terms with problems of aging smelters. Some companies are simply closing them. In 1980, Anaconda closed its 75-year-old Butte, MT, smelter and is shipping concentrates to Japan, rather than modifying the smelter to meet environmental requirements. And oth Phelps Dodge Corp. and Asarco Inc. have antiquated smelters on which they will have to make decisions. The most troubled metal in 1982, Business Week said, will be molybdenum, with no real recovery in sight until the mid-1980s. High molybdenum prices in the late 1970s, caused in part by shortages, triggered overexpansion that will take years for the US market to soak up. On a more upbeat note, 1981 mergers might help stabilize the industry by providing funds for mining companies. Standard Oil Co. (Ohio) said it plans to spend $7 billion on Kennecott during the next 10 years for modernization and expansion. And Atlantic Richfield Co. said it will spend $500 million on Anaconda Copper Co. during the next five years. Another positive note was sounded by T. H. Adams of the United Banks of Colorado Inc. He said he expects the mining industry to experience moderate growth in 1982, led by "interest rate sensitive" demand from energy, electronics, and defense markets. And mining will be helped by "weak, but improved" construction and auto markets. The mining industry will be operating in an economy stronger than 1981, but still relatively sluggish by postwar standards, Adams predicted. Iron Ore Estimated US iron ore production in 1981 was 75.2 Mt (74 million long tons), up 6% from 70.7 Mt (69.6 million long tons) in 1980, though down from the 87.1 Mt (85.7 million long tons) produced in 1979. The mine value of usable iron produced from domestic mines was estimated at $3 billion. US iron ore was produced by 28 companies operating 35 mines, 26 concentration plants, and 16 pelletizing plants. The mines included 34 open pits and one underground mine. India’s most extensive renewable energy expansion program targets 280 GW of solar energy by 2030. Due to the massive generation of photovoltaic waste (expected 34,600 T by 2030), stringent recycling effort to recover metal resources from endof- life PVs is required for resource recovery, circular economy, and subsequent reduction in the environmental impact. The present study investigates the recycling potential of end-of-life silicon solar modules. The feed characterization reveals that most of the values in PV modules are concentrated in the frame (pure Al), Si wafer (72–84% Si, 9–12% Al, and 0.13–0.71% Ag), and electrical connections (Cu wire coated with Sn). The Si and Ag values in the feed were beneficiated using water fluidization, and concentrate with 90% Si and 2% Ag was attained in the underflow concentrate. Ag values were recovered in the form of AgCl by leaching in nitric acid and precipitation. After the purification step, the residue containing 99% Si can be further utilized to fabricate Si wafer and Al-Si alloy. The preliminary cost estimations suggest that the proposed process is economically viable for the recycling of solar panels with the maximum value generated from the AgCl precipitate followed by Al panels and Si wafers.
