The relationship between coal characteristics and power plant performance has become a matter of increasing interest to utilities. This relationship can affect the value of coals, decisions as to coal washing, setting penalties for delivery of coal that fails to meet specifications, and justifying buying better coals (at higher costs) before public utility commissions. The study described in this paper was directed to identifying how coal characteristics impact on boilers and related coal and gas handling systems. TVA data for the period 1962-1980 was the basis for the study. Models were developed for boiler efficiency, boiler availability, and maintenance costs as a function of such coal characteristics as ash, sulfur, and moisture content and boiler age. Boiler load and maintenance efforts were considered as variables in some of the models, but were found not to be statistically significant. Although the results of this study are strictly applicable to only the TVA system, they can serve as guides or first approximations for other utilities.

The characteristics of gold leaching from carbonaceous matter by sodium cyanide, and sorption of gold cyanide to carbonaceous matter in autoclaved and non -autoclaved gold ore from Barrick Goldstrike Mines Inc. (BGMI), Nevada, was investigated. Much greater gold cyanide complex sorption was observed for the carbonaceous matter in high preg-robbing ores relative to the low preg-robbing ores. This observation corroborates previous reports that have attributed observed preg-robbing behavior to the carbon in the ore. Gold cyanide complex sorption was found to be reversible for carbonaceous matter from low preg-robbing ore, but was irreversible for carbonaceous matter from high preg-robbing ores. Autoclaving the ore appeared to enhance the sorptive behavior of the carbonaceous matter from both high and low preg-robbing ores.

The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO's BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.

The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive. It may be quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is the rate at which the detonation wave propagates through an explosive within a blast hole or any restrained space. The unconfined velocity emanates when an explosive is detonated in the open. However, the confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually employed under a definite degree of confinement. This paper evaluates the increment of air deck volume and its effect on the VOD. The air gap (air deck) volume is increased stepwise from 10 to 30% of the total blast hole volume by reducing the stemming height in the collar zone. Thereafter, the VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column is conducted using the Dáutriche technique. It is observed that the VOD reduced with the increasing air deck volume and detonation failure is high when 30% of the blast hole volume is replaced with air deck. It is deduced that the increment of the air deck volume has an effect on the attenuation of the steady-state VOD.

Newmont Mining Corporation has been processing refractory gold ores by roasting since January 1995. The ores are refractory due to the association of the gold with iron sulfides, namely pyrite and marcasite, and the presence of carbonaceous components and is oxidized in an oxygen-enriched gaseous atmosphere. The structural characteristics of the calcine have a strong influence on the eventual recovery of gold by cyanidation. These characteristics are strongly dependent upon the roasting conditions, mainly the roasting temperature. Originally, the sulfides and carbonaceous matter were oxidized at a temperature that typically ranged between 535 and 560 °C. Controlling the roasting temperature within the lower and narrower range of 510 to 515 °C produced a calcine with a larger surface area(e.g. higher porosity), which resulted in a gold recovery increase of3.3 percent in 2001 equivalent to 5.1 million dollars of additional gross revenue. The new strategies of operating at temperatures never tested before are discussed. It constituted a great challenge to the control room operators for the lower operating temperature falls much closer to the ignition temperature of the sulfide ore and smaller and more frequent adjustments in operating parameters were needed to improve and maintain high gold recoveries. Based on the encouraging results that were achieved in 2001, a decision was made to install a “smart” process control system because the roaster temperature control was performed by manual inputs from the control room operators. The development and implementation of the control system to reduce or eliminate the temperature variability between the different control room operators commenced in June of 2002 and was fully operational by the end of October. Lower roaster temperatures were achieved (500 to 505 °C), which resulted in further increase of gold recovery by about two percent. The overall recovery increase equated to 8.0 million dollars of additional revenue for the first 10 months of 2002.

Selective flocculation was used to produce superclean zinc concentrate with minimized silica contamination. Research was carried out on a flotation concentrate from the Jersey Miniere Zinc Company (JMZ) in Gordonsville, Tennessee. The material was first dispersed with sodium silicate and then causticized tapioca starch was used to selectively flocculate the sphalerite, leaving the silica in suspension. This technique has been applied commercially to iron ore beneficiation but has never been used for processing zinc. The feed material assayed 0.45% Si02. Use of 0.56 kg/tonne (1.13 lb/st) of sodium silicate and 0.070 kg/tonne (0.141 lb/st) of causticized tapioca starch resulted in 98.2% zinc recovery in a purified zinc concentrate assaying 66.0% Zn and 0.24% silica. The present target level for silica contamination in JMZ zinc concentrates is 0.3% Si02. This work has shown that selective flocculation offers a potential method for cleaning flotation concentrates, particularly where low silica products are required.

"Control of fugitive dust in high latitude open-pit mines is challenging due to unique atmospheric phenomenon resulting in complicated flow regimes, and atmospheric inversion due to lack of adequate solar insolation during prolonged winter seasons. In this study, two idealized (One conical and one trapezoidal) three-dimensional open-pit mine geometries are simulated for differing seasonal conditions using the CRADLE-CFD package. The airflow is modeled using Standard Kappa-Epsilon Turbulence Model solved by RANS equations. The concept of particle tracking is used to predict the flow pattern of dust particles. For various climatic conditions, and two different pit geometries, fugitive dust particles varying in size (PM0.1 to PM10) and concentration are generated at various locations of a mine and dispersed by the airflow pattern inside the open-pit mine. The amount and location of dust particles inside the pit is reported at various time intervals. The development of atmospheric inversion during the winter season significantly affected the amount of dust retention inside the open-pit domain. While during the summer, airborne dust particles were transported outside the open-pit domain in a short time. INTRODUCTIONComputational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of open-pit mines is challenging. In a recent paper, Bhowmick et. al. [1] presented different constraints and challenges in developing a 3-Dimensional CFD model. In order to obtain realistic results from a simulation, however, appropriate values of various inputs are required. Simulation results of a 3D non-hydrostatic model by Shi et al. [2] showed that both the mechanical and thermal forcing are important mechanisms, controlling the development of the atmosphere inside an open-pit. Alvarez et al [3] used a CFD model for predicting dust dispersions in a medium sized limestone quarry, and presented several iso-surfaces of varying dust concentrations using ANSYS CFX. A similar study by Torno et al [4] introduced a more sophisticated parameterization of the dust sources. Flores et al. [5] used an OpenFOAM CFD simulation package to simulate and predict pollutant dispersion in an idealized and an actual open-pit mine in Chile with an intense insolation condition. The model was simulated for three different conditions: (i) air advection (10 m/s) driven mechanical turbulence; (ii) surface heat flux (240 W/m2) driven thermal buoyancy; and (iii) both air advection and surface heat flux driven conditions. The results of the simulations showed that the buoyant currents contribute to the removal of a large percentage of the dust particles. The buoyant currents modify the purely mechanical-turbulence induced flow pattern and reduce the particle residence time, commonly observed in a purely mechanical turbulent flow (non-buoyant case)"

A study was conducted in an undergroundminewith the objective to identify, characterize, and source apportion airborne aerosols at the setup face and recovery room during longwall move operations. The focus was on contributions of diesel- and battery-powered heavy-duty vehicles used to transfer equipment between the depleted and new longwall panels and diesel-powered light-duty vehicles used to transport personnel and materials to various locations within the mine. Aerosols at the setup face were found to be distributed among diesel combustion-generated submicrometer and mechanically generated coarse aerosols. According to the data, the submicrometer aerosols downstream of the setup face were sourced to diesel exhaust emitted by vehicles operated inside and outside of the panel. Depending on the intensity of the activities on the panel, the outby sources contributed between 12.5 and 99.6% to the average elemental carbon mass flow at the setup face and recovery room. Extensively used light-duty vehicles contributedmeasurably to the elemental carbon concentrations at the setup face. The number concentrations of aerosols downstream of the setup face were associated with aerosols generated by combustion in diesel engines operated in the shield haulage loop and/or outside of the longwall panels. Entrainment of road dust by diesel or battery-powered load-haul-dump vehicles operated near the measurement site appears to be the primary source of mass concentrations of aerosols. The findings of this study should help the underground mining industry in its efforts to reduce exposures of miners to diesel and coarse aerosols.

"A gold bearing pyrite concentrate was treated at the demonstration scale (15 t/d) for the extraction of gold using a cyanide-free process. The pyrite was depressed in the flotation circuit in order to promote the flotation of copper and to achieve a sufficient copper grade to meet the copper smelter criteria. However, the recoveries of copper were 80% and only about 50% for the gold was found in the copper concentrate. The balance of the gold (50%) and copper (20%) contained in the pyrite concentrate as a reject from an overall flotation circuit. The gold grade in the pyrite concentrate is 5.40 g Au/t and copper about 0.77%. About 170 tons of pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant. The concentrate was first oxidized using a fluid bed to produce a calcine. Copper was then extracted as copper sulphate using diluted sulphuric acid. The residual solid was submitted to the DST chlorination process for gold extraction. Thereafter, the gold was recovered from the pregnant brine by precipitation over silica using DST proprietary process. The maximum gold recovery by chlorination was 90%. The average gold recovery by cyanidation of these calcines was 71%. INTRODUCTION Dundee Sustainable Technologies (“DST”) has developed a chlorination process as an alternative to the conventional cyanidation process for the extraction of precious metals from ores or concentrates. The technology offers viable and efficient gold recoveries and the ability to handle refractory ores and contaminated material (As, Hg, etc..). The process was successfully demonstrated on hundreds of samples provided by various mines, exploration and development projects and has evolved from laboratory experiment to demonstration at an industrial scale. DST’s chlorination process operates in a closed loop circuit, which implies that no liquid effluents are generated. The chemistry and process design allows precious metal deposits containing base metals to be treated viably. The tailings from the process are inert and non-toxic, sulphide depleted and thus non-acid generating. The efficiency of the process has demonstrated excellent gold recoveries within a fraction of the time needed for cyanidation to obtain similar results. The company completed in 2015 the construction of the first industrial demonstration plant operating with the DST technology. The plant has a capacity of 15 tons per day of mineral concentrate, and the ability to extract gold and silver utilizing DST chlorination technology. DST has tested its chlorination technology at demonstration scale on the refractory pyrite concentrate containing 5.40 g Au/t and 0.8 %copper. This auriferous pyrite concentrate, was by-product of copper concentrate respecting the copper smelter norms, is produced in a country where cyanide is prohibited and refractory to cyanidation. The pyrite concentrate was initially processed successfully (gold recoveries: > 90%) by the DST technology at laboratory (2011: 20 kg) and pilot (2014: 5 tons) scales to extract gold. About 170 tons of this pyrite concentrate were processed in the DST demonstration plant located in Thetford Mines."

Introduction Mechanical classifiers consist of a settling tank with parallel sides and a sloping bottom equipped with a mechanism which continuously agitates the pulp and removes the settled solids. The functions served by mechanical classifiers include the following: (1) allow the particles larger than the desired size to settle in the tank and provide an overflow product with a minimum of oversize particles, (2) produce an overflow product of sufficiently high solids content to meet the requirements of the subsequent processing steps, (3) agitate the pulp and permit separation of the entrapped undersize particles so they can report in the overflow product, and (4) drain and remove the underflow solids from the settling pool. Various types of mechanisms have been used to agitate the pulp and remove the settled solids, which include: (I) endless belt and chain drags, (2) reciprocating rakes, (3) helical flights mounted on a rotating shaft which extends through the settling pool, (4) helical flights inside of a rotating drum which contains the classifier pool, (5) troughed conveyor belts forming the settling pool in the concave curve of the belt closely following the tail pulley, and (6) low-speed impellers agitating the underflow settled in the apex of cone-type mechanical classifiers.23 The principal use of mechanical classifiers has been in closed¬-circuit wet grinding; however, this application has been widely displaced over the past few decades by the hydrocyclone. The hydrocyclone installation, including its feed pump, offers lower capital costs and requires less floor space. Nominally it produces an overflow prod¬uct of higher solids content, compared with a mechanical classifier, for comparable classification size up to 400µm (35 mesh). However, these advantages of the hydrocyclone are being gained at the sacrifice of some of the advantages of the mechanical classifier. The mechanical classifier requires less power and has lower maintenance costs than the hydrocyclone and its feed pump. The underflow product from the mechanical classifier can have a higher solids content and contain less entrapped undersize particles than the comparable product from the hydrocyclone. Consequently, it is capable of operating at a higher classification efficiency. A reduced circulating load24, 25 results under these conditions in a closed-circuit grinding application. Other applications for mechanical classifiers include desliming, dewatering, and washing operations. Sand-slime separation may be achieved using one or more stages of mechanical classifiers. Typical applications would include washing and deslimining of concrete aggre¬gate or sand; glass sand; abrasives; oyster shells; phosphate rock; iron, nickel, and chromium ores; alumina; zeolites; solar salt; and precipitates from chemical processing. As an example for the latter, Bitzer26 recommended the use of mechanical classifiers for countercur¬rent cementation-in-pulp of copper from the leach liquor. Similarly, mechanical classifiers are used in uranium processing27 for separation of the barren sands from the pregnant leach solution. Depending on the particle size and the effectiveness of the sand¬slime separation, the sand product from mechanical classifiers may be drained to solids content approaching 84%. Thus, mechanical classifiers are frequently used as dewatering equipment for various applications, such as: 1) Make a product having suitable solids content for subsequent transport by belt conveyor. 2) Provide a drained product to reduce cost of drying. 3) Provide a drained, washed, heavy sand product for return to the circuit. 4) Recover fine values from dilute plant effluents from coal, sand, phosphate-rock, and iron-ore washing plants and from steel-mill flue¬dust scrubbers. 5) Drain residual reagents of a preceding process stage prior to conditioning with reagents of different characteristics, e.g., cationic¬anionic flotation of phosphate rock, iron ore, etc. Design and Operating Features The proper selection of mechanical classification equipment re¬quires that the properties of the solids and liquid are adequately de¬fined. The following descriptive information regarding the solids is desired: feed rate, chemical and physical composition, density, tem¬perature, size analysis, and desired separation size. For the liquid used, the following data would be needed: feed rate, density, viscosity, pH, and temperature. Settling Area. The pool area required to permit a particle larger than the separation size to settle depends on the density and shape of the particle and on the density and viscosity of the pulp within the classifier pool. These criteria of the solids and pulp determine the settling rate which, in turn, determines the settling area required. Determination of the settling rate by long-tube batch tests can be used to calculate the settling area. A theoretical approach for estimat¬ing the settling area requirements is discussed in Chapter 1, Classifica¬tion Theory. This procedure can be used when neither test data nor empirical data from similar operations are available. Data on settling-area requirements and settling rates have been compiled by the manufacturers of mechanical classifiers. The approxi¬mate settling area required for a particular separation size can be estimated by using the curve shown in Fig. 65. This curve applies for closed-circuit grinding applications. For dilute velocity classification in open circuit, desliming, the length of the overflow weir, W, multiplied by the weir's mean distance from the feed opening, E, is used as the design criterion, instead of the settling area, in sizing the classifier. The area requirements, W X E, for dilute velocity classification can be expressed in terms of volumetric flow, Q, and settling rate, Rs, as follows: W x E = Q/(18.06 Rs) where W and E are feet, Q is gallons per minute, and Rs is inches per second. Overflow Weir. The hydraulic head, and thus the velocity at which the overflow crests the overflow weir, is one of the factors controlling the particle size of classification. Consequently, the length of the overflow weir must be designed to provide the overflow velocity which allows the particles larger than the desired size of classification to settle in the working area of the pool. Mining is one of the oldest human activities. It goes back at least to the Bronze Age and possibly even the Stone Age. The Romans mined copper in Spain and tin in England some two thousand years ago. The writings of Agricola in the 16th century show that mining was important in the Middle Ages. Today we mine more mineral commodities in greater tonnages than ever before. This long and fascinating history closely tied with the economic development of the human race is one of the charms of the mining industry. It also, unfortunately, gives rise to some widespread misconceptions.

A 1/20 scale experimental dozer push test rig was designed and constructed to quantify the expected production rates (loose cubic metres per hour) for dozers operating in hard rock bulk push applications. The particle size distribution of the material employed in the test rig was modelled on a fragmented muckpile representative of that for a typical surface copper/gold mine overburden. A commercially available road base material was found to be highly representative of site conditions. Buckingham Pi theory was applied to mathematically develop factors for scaling up dozer productivity parameters, including blade loads and push times. Dozer production rates were investigated for various dozing distances and slope angles. A series of instantaneous productivity curves were produced which are applicable for use in hard rock dozer push operations. Currently, it is difficult to estimate dozer push productivity in hard rock environments due to dozer productivity correction factors that are empirical in nature and provide only discrete, end-point values for a range of operating conditions. The productivity curves produced demonstrate that dozer productivity declines rapidly over the range of 10 m to 40 m. As such, it is recommended that efficient bulk dozing operations in hard rock mining blocks should not exceed 40 m dozing distance. Further testing of muckpile conditions with increased clay and moisture content would be beneficial in order to better understand and quantify the effects of cohesion on hard rock dozer push productivity.

Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. operates a coal mining complex in Southeastern British Columbia. A large surface mine, a conventional underground mine, and an innovative hydraulic underground mine are presently in operation. The products of these mines are fed to the Elkview plant. This coal has to be prepared to 9. 5% ash and 6'o total moisture for export from the port of Roberts Bank near Vancouver, British Columbia to Japan at a rate of 4. 5 Mltpy. The moisture requirement for the coal product was recently increased to 8. 0% total moisture. The entire operation has been described in various publications (1), (2), (3). Details of the venture will not be repeated in this paper. In this paper we hope to describe the modifications made to the original coal preparation plant in order to satisfy market requirements for quality and quantity of coal.

"INTRODUCTION Foam, unless intentionally created, in any industrial process presents operational problems, or at a minimum, is a nuisance. Some foam problems are unique to a given industry and others are common across many industries. A few problems foam presents to any particular industry are: (a) Poor Housekeeping, (b) Environmental impact, (c) Safety Hazards, (d) Slower Production Rates and, (e) Reduced quality of the end product. Defoamers address these issues. Sadly, the assumption in most industries is all defoamers are alike. In reality, a lot of chemistry is involved in the manufacture of even the simplest defoamer sold today and rarely are any two defoamers “just alike”. Today’s defoamers can include polymer chemistry, fatty esters, alkoxylated alcohols, silicone chemistry, silicone surfactants, ethoxylated and propoxylated block polymers, and a tremendous amount of emulsion chemistry just to name a few. This paper will discuss the various types of defoamers, defoaming mechanisms, the advantages and disadvantages of defoamer selections, and how to choose the proper defoamer for your application. Before a discussion of defoamer can be brought about, foam generation and composition must be discussed. WHAT IS FOAM? Foam is a colloidal suspension of a gas dispersed in a liquid. Most often foam consists of air dispersed in water. If a stream of air is introduced into a liquid, the bubbles produced assume a spherical shape. As the density of the bubble is less than the liquid the bubble rises. When the individual bubbles reach and pass through a surfactant free liquid they collapse. Air from the bubble dissipates and the liquid previously surrounding the bubble flows back.It should be noted a pure liquid will not foam. In the case of air dispersed in water a surfactant is necessary to make the water support a stable foam. A surfactant is a term used to describe a surface active agent; a compound with a hydrophilic end and a hydrophobic end on the same molecule."

In pelletizing magnetic iron ore concentrates, about 6 to 18 lb of bentonite binder are added per ton of concentrate during balling to give green and dry strengths to the unfired pellets. The dry bentonite is mixed into the filtercake following the magnetic concentration circuit of the plant. The filtercake contains about 10% moisture, and the water may be of highly variable composition, depending on the particular concentration circuit, its source, and the ore being treated. A knowledge of the parameters that influence the balling operation is essential for optimal efficiency in producing balls strong enough to survive the treatment during transportation from the balling device to the furnace and during the firing operation. Furthermore, very weak unfired pellets probably contribute to high dust losses and poor furnace control. The factors that determine the strength of unfired pellets have received considerable study (1,2,3,4). Tigerschiold and Ilmoni(l) pointed out the significance of the surface area of the particles being pelletized. Merklin and Childs(2) reported on the effect of material size consist, chemical additives such as soda ash, lime, balling time, ball size, and the moisture content of green balls. Iwasaki and Zetterstrom(3) examined the detrimental effects of fatty acids on the pelletizing process. Stone(4) correlated the zeta potential of bentonites with the strength of unfired pellets. He found that, in general, a high negative charge on the bentonite is conducive to good balling. Although studies of pelletizing in the iron ore industry deal with a complex multicomponent system consisting mainly of the iron mineral, bentonite, and water, the last of these has received little attention, particularly with regard to the possible effects of mill water chemistry on the pelletizing process and the strength of unfired pellets. It is widely known that the composition of mill process water is an important variable in unit operations such as flotation, thickening, and filtering and that impure water can lead to poor metallurgical results. The results of the present study indicate that the chemistry of the mill water may be an important variable in the balling operation as well. Knowledge about this variable should contribute to lowering bentonite and oil consumption and to improving furnace performance. Such knowledge can also assist those who use balling in evaluating commercial bentonites for plant use as well as those investigating balling from a more fundamental point of view In this study we have examined 1) the effects of replacing mill process water in the magnetic concentrate filtercake with pure water, and 2) the effects of several chemical impurities that are commonly found in mill process waters upon the strength of unfired pellets. The results are interpreted in terms of the zeta potential of the bentonite and magnetite particles. The data lend support to a suggested mechanism whereby the electrostatic attraction of oppositely charged particle surfaces causes bentonite-bentonite and magnetite-bentonite bonding. This mechanism would also explain why several chemical additives e.g., sodium carbonates and phosphates, have such marked effects on increasing the strength of unfired pellets.

The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.

In Tunisia, the Paleocene-Eocene series has an important socio-economic interest. It contains profitable oil and water accumulations. Moreover, it encompasses phosphate reserves. The present study uses seismic reflection prospection and borehole data for the reconstitution of the Paleocene-Eocene deposit structure in the Jerid area (southwestern Tunisia), a crucial step for the phosphate exploitation. Firstly, lithostratigraphic correlations incorporating water and petroleum wells were established according to different directions for a tentative approximation of the Paleocene- Eocene deposit geometry by following their lateral evolution. To give more details, seismic reflection profiles were interpreted in the second step. The Paleocene-Eocene formations were associated with their corresponding reflectors on the closest seismic profile using the relation of time and depth in petroleum wells. Analysis of lithostratigraphic correlations shows notable variations in the Paleocene-Eocene series thickness and depth. Seismic profile interpretation explains these variations by highlighting different buried tectonic features. The results confrontation reveals that the phosphatic deposit geometry in the Jerid area is mainly influenced by the (1) emergence of the Saharan platform and the Chott northern chain since the Late Cretaceous, (2) syn-sedimentary normal activity of E-W and NE-SW faults during the Paleocene-Eocene epoch, (3) reverse-reactivation of these faults, and (4) major Tortonian folding phase. This study can enormously enhance the Jerid area socio-economic development by presenting useful findings that may orientate the phosphate exploration.

INTRODUCTION The Alchem trona mine, owned and operated by Allied Chemical Corp., is located approximately 32 km (20 miles) west of the town of Green River, and 8 km (5 miles) north of Interstate 80 in southwest Wyoming. Trona, a naturally occuring sodium sesquicarbonate (NaCO3 • NaHCO3 • 2H2O), is used for the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3), commonly known as soda ash. Present annual US consumption of soda ash is approximately 9.07 Mt (10 million st), out of which approximately 7.3 Mt (8 million st) is produced from the Wyoming trona mines. About 44% of soda ash is consumed by the glass industry; 3 % by exports; and the remaining portion by paper, chemical, soap, textile, and nonferrous industries. Allied Chemical operates an underground mine at an average depth of about 488 m (1600 ft). There are three other trona mines in the area operated by FMC Corp., Stauffer Chemical Corp., and Texasgulf Inc. (see Fig. 1). Allied Chemical became interested in southwest Wyoming trona deposits in the early 1940s. Explora¬tion work was begun in 1959 with the acquisition of federal leases. Exploitation of the reserves began in 1968. Two shafts, one 6.1 m (20 ft) and another 3.7 m (12 ft), were completed prior to 1968. The 6.1-m (20-ft) diam service shaft is divided in half by a cur¬tain wall, with one half used for men and material and the other for ventilation as a return air shaft. During the period from 1968 to 1974, the 3.7-m (12-ft) shaft was used as production shaft with two 7.3-t (8-st) skips. Due to the increased demand for soda ash, plant and mine expansions were completed during 1974. Under this expansion, the material handling system capacity was increased by constructing a new 2721-t (3000-st) capacity ore bin, sinking a 6.1-m (20-ft) diam produc¬tion shaft, and installing a friction hoist with two 22.7-t (25-st) skips. The Alchem mine manpower is 484 employees and about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st) of trona was produced during 1976. Three different mining systems are used at the Alchem mine: conventional, continuous, and longwall. Allied Chemical introduced its first longwall unit in 1973, which was also the first longwall system introduced in the Wyoming trona district. At present, four conventional, seven continuous, and two longwall units are in operation. This equipment is operated in ten production areas. GEOLOGY The bedded trona and trona-halite in the Green River basin of southwestern Wyoming is a major re¬source for the nation. There are 25 beds that exceed 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and underlie areas of about 2590 km2 (1000 sq miles). There are other minor beds that range in thickness from 0.3 to 1.2 m (1 to 4 ft). Allied Chemical's Alchem mine is located in bed 17. The trona bed numbering system starts at the lowest elevation and increases upwards. The trona beds are in the Wilkens Peak member of the Green River formation. The Green River formation was deposited in a lake that began in early Eocene as a large body of fresh water, shrank in size and became saline, and then became fresh water again. The sedi¬ment during the saline phase of the lake, which includes the trona beds, is called the Wilkens Peak member. The underlying freshwater lake deposit is called the Tipton member and includes a 25.9-m (85-ft) sand unit which is a high pressure, low permeability aquifer. The over¬lying sediment is called the Laney shale. The Green River formation is underlaid by the Wasatch formation and overlaid by the Bridger formation (see Fig. 2). The structure of the beds in the area of the Allied Chemical mine is mostly postdepositional asymmetrical folds of small amplitude. These folds range in size of 3 to 6.1 m (10 to 20 ft) to as much as 45.7 m (150 ft). The trend of the folds is northwesterly with the north¬east flank of the anticlines having a steep dip and the southwest having gentle dips. Trona bed 17 varies in thickness from 2.4 to 3.4 m (8 to 11 ft) over the 93.2 km2 (36 sq miles) holdings of Allied Chemical and is flat lying except for the rela¬tively minor folding and a negligible regional dip of about 0.017 rad (1°). Trona occurs naturally in several physical forms in the Green River basin, being both massive and crystal¬line. The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) performed a feasibility analysis for the purpose of either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) fa¬cility designed to demonstrate the permanent, safe disposal of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple op¬erational and performance concerns have been identified. A com¬prehensive engineering study was conducted in 1995 to: 1) Qualify and quantify operational concerns, 2) Evaluate possible alternatives, and 3) Recommend an optimum solution. Multiple system modification and/or replacement scenarios were evaluated with associated cost estimates developed. The study considered replacement with either centrifugal or axial fans. Multiple fan duties are required at the WIPP. Therefore, Variable Frequency Drives and Inlet Vane Controls (IVC) were investigated for centrifugal fans. In-flight adjustable blades were investigated for axial fans. The study indicated that replacing the existing system with two double-width, double-inlet centrifugal fans equipped with IVCs was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of: 1) ensuring the required operational readiness, and 2) improving system performance. The WIPP is currently planning to replace the first fan in 1997.
