The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

The geochemical association of arsenic and gold in epithermal precious metal deposits of the Basin and Range province is well documented, and in this paper I wish to discuss the evaluation and utilization of this element association for geochemical gold exploration. In 1961-62, I conducted an exploration program on lands controlled by Getchell Mine, Inc, and centered about the Getchell gold mine itself, Besides exploring for new gold deposits, the program was to evaluate these lands for potential deposits of any type; thus, a multi-phase program encompassing a number of exploration methods was conducted. I shall not elaborate on the process of designing the program or of integrating the various methods, but for gold exploration, geochemical methods were determined to have the best potential. This paper is based on that effort. Figure 1 shows the exploration area, which covers the northern half of the Osgood Mountains in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. The Getchell $line is on the east flank of the range and is about 40 miles northeast of Winnemucca.

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. Due to inefficiencies of the flotation process, significant effort has been recently provided to develop gravity separators for treating ultrafine particles. As a result, several enhanced gravity concentrators have been developed and commercialized. The Altair Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity separator that provides relatively efficient separations on +25 µm size fractions. An experimental program conducted on -600 µm coal found that the Altair Jig reduced the ash content of the 600 x 44 µm from about 30% to 10% with an 86% combustible recovery value. The pulse water pressure, feed volumetric rate and ragging volume were found to be the key operating parameters affecting the separation performances obtained from the process. An extremely low density cut point of 1.54 and an Ep value of 0.08 were indicative of the high process efficiency values achievable by the Altair jig.

Wollastonite, a calcium metasilicate, derives its name from the man who discovered the mineral, Doctor William H. Wollaston, an English scientist. OCCURENCE Occurences of the mineral have been noted in Finland, Switzerland, Russia, Japan, Mexico and in the United States in Texas, California, Arizona, and New York. The only commercial deposit now being exploited is at Willsboro, New York. It is mined and processed by the Cabot Corporation whose home offices are in Boston, Massachusetts.

Historically, the surface subsidence over underground coal mines has been predicted using empirical profile or influence functions which have little or no connection to the actual mechanics of the subsidence. Without a mechanistic basis, establishing the exact site-specific parameters to use in these empirical methods has been problematic. A practical subsidence predictive method based on mechanics has the appealing capability of allowing the determination of site-specific parameters from fundamental properties of the overburden with minimal field calibration work. This paper presents several case studies where a mechanics-based, boundary-element program is used to back-calculate the surface subsidence associated with various panels at several Northern Appalachian coal mines. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, and it incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin scam or vein type deposits. In this paper, the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at five longwall panels and a room-and-pillar section. The fitted subsidence from the model is compared with the field measurements and analyzed. The results from the case studies in this paper demonstrate that the laminated model with calibrated properties can easily provide moderately accurate subsidence predictions and is fairly flexible for fitting measured subsidence. However, additional subsidence predictive case studies arc recommended in order to ultimately evaluate the potential of the laminated overburden model for practical subsidence prediction

One of the most important problems facing the coal industry today is the disposal of refuse from the coal preparation plants in a safe, economical, and efficient manner while complying with all legal requirements. The most commonly used refuse disposal method has been landfill/impoundment. In this method, the coarser refuse fractions are disposed of by layering and compaction into a landfill. The fine coal slurry refuse fraction is impounded in a dam constructed of a portion or all of the coarser refuse fractions. The failure of an impoundment at Buffalo Creek, Saunders, West Virginia and the sliding failure of a coarse refuse pile at Aberfan, Wales, England, resulted in an evaluation of refuse disposal methods by various regulatory agencies as well as coal producers. The result of this evaluation was the promulgation of Federal regulations dealing with the preparation, operation, and final abandonment of coal refuse disposal areas. As a consequence of these regulations the use of the landfill/impoundment method of disposal became in some cases economically unfeasible or technically impossible. The paper forecasts whether the mix of technological, procedural and other factors that produced the increase will change in the future. The forecast is based on the base case and spreadsheet production model described in the previous paper.

TBMs can last for decades and be rebuilt project after project with proper maintenance. How successful can rebuilt TBMs be? At the DigIndy Tunnel System in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, a rebuilt TBM was used to great effect. The 6.2 m diameter Main Beam, originally manufactured in 1980, bored 40+ km of tunnels and set three world records in its size class of 6 to 7 m, including a best month of 1,754 m. In this paper, the authors analyze the TBM rebuild, performance and lessons learned to make recommendations for future projects seeking to use rebuilt TBMs over long distances.

Potential cement raw materials are widely distributed but deposit size, quality, transport, market and environmental considerations are important in determining economic value. Major production locations are in a variety of geological environments ranging from Lower Paleozoic crystalline limestones to Tertiary and Recent polyzoal limestones and limesands, both onshore and offshore. Raw material transportation is by road, rail, sea, aerial ropeway and pipeline; road/rail transportation of the finished product is traditional but movement by sea of clinker and cement is increasingly a feature of the industry.

Hydrolytic stripping is the process whereby metal ions in a loaded solvent extractant are hydrolyzed by water, typically at 130°-200°C. Equilibrium hydrolytic stripping tests were done on Versatic 10 solutions of various metals, singly and in mixtures. Single solutions of Fe, Xi, Cu, Mg, and tin precipitated aFe2O3, Ni(OH)2, Cu2O, Mg(OH) 2 and ?Mn203 respectively during hydrolytic stripping. Several mixtures containing iron precipitated magnetic spinel ferrites, MFe20k. No other combinations formed mixed oxides. It is proposed that the mechanisms for hydrolysis and precipitation of iron in loaded Versa- tic solutions are similar to those for iron hydrolysis in aqueous solutions. Infrared spec- troscopy and thin-layer chromatography of mixed iron-nickel Versatic solutions indicated that mixed Fe-Ni carboxylate complexes are present. Magnetic interactions between mixed complexes are thought to be responsible for the homogeneous nucleation of magnetic mixed oxides in preference to single oxides.

Introduction This section of the text presents a general review of the different types of concentrate marketing contracts. Too often the marketing strategy is ignored in the design phase of the project and the producer is left to the mercy of the buyer. Many items such as concentrate grade, impurity levels and moisture content of the concentrate my enhance, or severely restrict the producers ability to make a profit it. Close attention should be paid to the design of the concentrator which can improve the quality of the concentrates, thus the ability to increase the rider of potential buyers can be enhanced. Difficult at best, is the position of the miner who only has one outlet available for its production. Obviously, the trade offs must be evaluated. For example, concentrate grade vs recovery and grind/filtering capacity vs moisture of the concentrate all must be weighted against freight cost to a potential buyer. In addition, the above considerations must be weighed against the capital cost to the miner. This chapter is intended to highlight important articles that are included in short and long term agreements and to give a new miner/producer some insight into hat my or my not add value to the product. Unless the miner sells the product directly to a consumer such as a gold, or silver producer, or to a large enough operation that has a totally intergrated system to make a finished product, most miners are forced to sell to buyers who ultimately will refine and market the product. Types of Contract Agreements There are many types of contract agreements just as there are colors in the rainbow, however, most contracts fall into three basic categories. (1) Smelter Schedules: Designed for the small producer, the odd lot of concentrate, smelter flux and precious metal ore. Albeit custom smelters are becoming fever by the day, because of pollution control requirements and financial difficulties, most remaining custom smelters have a smelter schedule. A smelter schedule is a posted list of charges and conditions that the smelter will buy material from a seller. Smelter schedules exist for copper, lead, zinc, silver and gold (Handbook for Small Mining Enterprises, Montana Bureau of Mines). (2) Short Term Custom Contracts: Large mine producers frequently use Short Term Contracts where the seller has the buyer frame a contract that is tailored to the sellers’ production. Since mercury is chemically similar to silver, it tends to dissolve along with the silver and gold during cyanide leaching. Ultimately mercury is recovered along with the silver as mercury/silver/gold amalgam which requires retorting to remove the mercury prior to refining the silver and gold. A possible approach to separating mercury from silver and gold in cyanide leach solutions is to take advantage of the replacement reaction between [Hg(CN)4]2- and Ag2S, which results in precipitation of mercury as HgS while dissolving silver as [Ag(CN)2]-. Results are presented demonstrating that mercury can be removed from cyanide solutions with high effectiveness, while, at the same time, recovering additional silver in solution. Initial experiments with static flasks in the laboratory showed a high degree of mercury removal could be achieved. Results using actual metallurgical plant products in bottle roll tests indicate the process works on a larger scale, but also results in significant gold losses if the solution being treated has high gold levels, such as carbon stripping pregnant eluent solution.

The non-isothermal magnetization roasting process and isothermal magnetization roasting process of siderite ore were investigated using thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and a real-time infrared gas analyzer. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used to analyze the characteristics of samples. The results showed that the decomposition degree and decomposition rate of siderite ore were vitally affected by heating rate and roasting temperature. It was determined that A1 reaction model (f(α) = 1 − α) and A3/2 reaction model (f(α) = (3/2)(1 − α)[−ln(1 − α)]1/2) were the most probable mechanism function of the non-isothermal decomposition process and isothermal decomposition process, respectively. The phase transformation and decomposition mechanism during the roasting process were evaluated. Siderite decomposed in the process of magnetization roasting, released CO and CO2, and transformed into strongly magnetic magnetite. The SEM images highlighted that as the decomposition progressed, the structure of roasted samples was destroyed, and an increasing number of cracks and pores emerged on the surface, which is advantageous to the following grinding process.

The final 1995 figures on industrial sand and gravel have not yet been compiled by the US Geological Survey (USGS). There is usually about a nine-month lag time in receiving and compiling this information. However, USGS estimates that domestic production of industrial sand and gravel will increase about 4% to 28.2 Mt(31 million st). The average unit price is expected to increase as well. The top five producers during 1995 were Unimin, US Silica, Fairmount Minerals, Oglebay Norton and Morie Co. Glass manufacturing for containers, automobiles and buildings was mixed during 1995. Containers, the largest consumer of silica sand, remained steady, with regional increases. However, silica use in glass containers face increased competition from plastic and recycled glass (cullet). It was reported that the Pepsi Cola announced plans to replace glass containers with plastic during 1996.

The dissolution behavior of copper and gold from their pure state and from Au/Cu alloys in cyanide solutions has been investigated using a rotating disc. Oxygen was used as an oxidant. The effect of the composition of the alloys, stirring speed of the disc, concentration of lixiviants and temperature on the overall dissolution kinetics has been studied. Gold/copper alloys of three compositions were used in this study. The atomic percent of gold in these alloys was 75, 50 and 25, respectively. The dissolution behavior of these three alloys was compared with that of pure gold and of copper under the same chemical conditions. In general, the dissolution of copper and gold from alloys is partially controlled by surface chemical reaction and largely by mass transfer.

Due to the immense volumes of municipal wastes that are generated in this nation every year, it has become imperative that effective measures be developed to utilize all or portions of these materials in a productive and efficient manner. Nany larger municipalities employ incineration to reduce the bulk of material to be removed to disposal sites: but, even after incineration, approximately one-fourth of the original waste material in the form of non-combustible residue and flyash remain. It has been found that the flyash fraction of the incinerator residue contains varying amounts of copper, silver, gold, aluminum, iron and titanium along with many other important metals. The serious loss of these natural resources contained within the flyash and the monetary expense of current disposal methods present a serious and rapidly increasing problem to the public and to the Federal Government. The growing emphasis upon environmental control, rapidly increasing urban population and "convenience packaging" 'with its attendant increased waste production has led to the initiation of a broad range of studies concerning municipal waste. For example, the U. S. Bureau of I-lines is investigating all aspects of the incineration of municipal waste under its solid waste disposal program.l "In-house" studies range from improved incinerator design to potential recovery and recycling of the various components within the incinerator residue. A major portion of the latter research is being performed at the U. S. Bureau of ;-lines, College Park, Maryland facility while grants for specific areas of study have been issued to several universities and research institutes. In addition, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare has supported programs examining the potential recovery of paper; glass, metals and other components of unincinerated refuse followed by disposal in sanitary landfills.

This paper presents research on the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment used in surface coal mining. Environmental impact was assessed through the measurement of equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. In this study, exhaust emission refers to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation refers to fine particles (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10) and total suspended particulate matter (TSP). Sound level refers to the sound pressure level at different distances from the equipment. Modeling of the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment was conducted using the Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research was a part of a broader project involving the development of a software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and ecofriendly mining systems, sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). This research may assist mining professionals in quantifying the environmental impact of digging and loading equipment, and developing strategies for reducing the overall impact of such equipment in surface mining.

As one of the more important Industrials Minerals, gypsum occupies a significant place in the economy of the United States, particularly in that segment which can be loosely called the Construction Industry. For many years, products made from gypsum have been a major building material, and the usefulness and versatility of these products is such that their widespread use is expected to continue. In 1968, according to U.S. Bureau of Mines statistics, the value of all gypsum products sold in the United States was 405,000,000 - and although this value has dipped from the 1964 high of $ 432,000,000, it is expected to trend upward in the next few years to equal and surpass this figure as the construction industry recovers from its current squeeze of "tight money" and high interest rates. There are many factors to be measured in determining the potential value of any mineral deposit, and how it might fit within its particular industry. What, then, are the qualities which a gypsum deposit must have in order to profitably participate in the four hundred million dollar plus business which is the gypsum industry? First let's consider the geology of gypsum, the geographic distribution of deposits, and the more important factors such as size, grade, capital requirements, and operating cost. Then, an understanding of the uses of gypsum, various types of products, and location of markets would be helpful, along with such other factors as the structure of the industry, price trends, etc.
