Grinding with steel media adversely affects the flotation response of galena. Electrochemical measurements, flotation tests, and AES, XPS, and STEM examinations were employed to identify interactions between galena and mild steel. Iron oxide, hydroxide, or sulfate species that formed on the galena surface upon contact with mild steel decreased its floatability, with the time of contact and aeration condition affecting the severity of the flotation depression.. Parallel tests performed with an active metal, magnesium, indicated that floatability was also affected by the presence of a surface coating involving lead species.

Rapidly increasing energy costs and more rigid customer quality requirements necessitate improved control of pelletizing processes. With the introduction of dedicated microprocessor-based controllers, sophisticated control strategies are now possible. A recent application of this technology at Carol Project has resulted in fuel savings, improved pellet quality, and standardization of operating procedures. This was accomplished with no production loss by the use of a "building block" approach to design and equipment selection. Details of this approach and the results obtained are described.

Exploration for ore deposits in southeastern Missouri in the 1950's resulted in the important discovery of lead, zinc, copper and silver in 1955. Further discoveries in the area led to the naming of the Viburnum trend. It has sometimes been referred to as the "New Lead belt" to distinguish it from older lead-producing areas to the east. As presently developed, the "trend" is 35 miles long, running north and south about 50 miles west of the Lead belt. Galena (lead) is the principal ore mined, with lesser quantities of sphalerite (zinc), chalcopyrite (copper) and silver recovered as economic by-products. The ore body is as much as 140 feet thick and 1,200 feet wide, and is found in the Bonneterre Dolomite (Upper Cambrian) at depths ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet. Since its discovery many companies have engaged in exploration and several major companies have developed new mines and constructed mills and a smelter in the area. The first mine in the Viburnum trend came on stream in 1960, but as more mines came on stream and others reached capacity, lead production increased to the point that the Southeast Missouri Lead district produced 432,576 tons of lead in 1970 to become the world's largest lead-producing region (Missouri Geological Survey and Water Resources, 1971). The Viburnum trend area with its rolling, heavily forested hills and numerous clear running streams is in the Clark National Forest of the Missouri Ozarks. Until the recent development of its mineral resources, the area was sparsely populated and nearly unmarked by the activities of man. The Spitzenberg Tunnel is a 600 m (1,970 ft) long twin tube motorway tunnel on Germany’s Autobahn A44 between Kassel and Eisenach. Since flexibility was considered to be very important in the continuously changing geological conditions, NATM was chosen as the construction method. When passing an old quarry with only 1,80 m (6 ft) of overburden, the excavation works became extraordinarily challenging. This paper not only describes the special methods, like double sidewall drifts and pipe umbrellas applied in this zone but also highlights the cooperation between the parties involved, which in combination made the project a joint success.

A study of some variables affecting the recovery of molybdenum from oxidized molybdenum minerals was made. The effects of variations in contact time, temperature, pulp density, particle size, and solvent concentration on the recovery of molybdenum using acid and alkaline solvents were investigated. Chemical analyses, screen analyses and microscopic examinations were made and the presence of important elements determined. A hydrometallurgical method was developed to recover the molybdenum from the oxidized molybdenum ore by simultaneous dissolution of the molybdenum with sulfuric acid, adsorption on activated charcoal and flotation of the charcoal. The molybdenum was extracted from the activated charcoal with sodium hydroxide, precipitated with calcium hydroxide as calcium molybdate and this regenerated sodium hydroxide for additional stripping. A solvent extraction method, using mines, was also studied to recover molybdenum from both alkaline and acid molybdenum solutions. Satisfactory results were obtained.

I met Austin Taylor in Vancouver on my way home from my first Pioneer examination. He asked me to examine the unsuccessful old Lorne mine, adjoining and west of the Pioneer. I had no idea that this meeting would lead to one of the outstanding successes and pleasant associations of my career. I knew nothing of Taylor, except that Gen. McRae and associates said that he had been engaged in lumbering and was interested in an oil and gasoline marketing company called Home Oil. But even if the Lorne examination would be only a small one, in the depths of the Depression in 1931, I was glad to have a chance to look at another gold property, so I agreed to visit the Lorne early in August. The start of the trip was not auspicious. I had been working hard on an unproductive study, and was greatly worried by my father's hopeless illness with tuberculosis. To get a little rest on my way north I had arranged to go from Seattle to Vancouver on the night boat that connected with my train. To my surprise, Bill Boultbee, an associate of Taylor, met me at the train in Seattle at 9:30. He said he would drive me to Vancouver, arriving at one In the morning. I was so tired that I begged off and let him take the drive alone Boultbee was most understanding and friendly, but I knew how I would have felt if I had been kind enough to take the long drive to help a stranger and then had been forced to make the return midnight drive alone. I was lucky they did not call off the examination at once. I got a good sleep on the Vancouver boat and Austin Taylor met me at the Hotel Vancouver for breakfast. After a brief talk he took me to the small steamer that made the 4-hr sail up Howe Sound to the village of Squamish. This was the end of the Province-owned Pacific Great Eastern Railway that was eventually to be a shortcut from Vancouver to the Canadian National main line at Prince George. Because

"This paper outlines a comprehensive, cost-effective testing program for the acid-ferric sulfate heap leaching of oxide, supergene and primary copper ores. It is based on extensive experience in copper heap leaching and uses the many technological advances in the field developed over the past several decades. The approach described requires firstly a detailed resource evaluation, then a hydrodynamic characterization of representative samples and, finally, a focused metallurgical testing program. The principles communicated here can be applied to other acid leachable minerals. The program varies considerably from conventional testing in its disciplined, orderly, step-by-step approach, its application of hydrological and chemical principles to leaching, and its reliance on fewer, more tightly controlled column tests. The purpose of the test program is to optimize the financial, time and other resources devoted to the program, while minimizing the financial risks to the development company or companies and the project funding providers. IntroductionThe major goal of any process development testing program should be the successful implementation of the project. With respect to heap leaching, the metallurgical testing program plays a critical role in the larger objective, as described in Scheffel (2013, 2014). McNulty’s series of papers (1998, 2004, 2014) confirm that the success of any project is directly proportional to the extent and quality of the testing program on which the process is designed.Therefore, a key development objective is to conduct a well-focused metallurgical test program. While the primary focus of this paper is copper, the acid leaching of any substance would benefit from a similar approach.This paper addresses primarily the sulfate system, which is compatible with the bioleaching of sulfide minerals. Nicol et al. (2011) described the advantages of the chloride leaching of copper sulfide minerals. United States patents Nos. US 2009/0173188 A1, US 8,597,933 B2 and US2015/0232963 A1, assigned to BHP Chile Inc. and BHP Billiton S.A. Ltd, describe methods for both the oxidative and nonoxidative leaching of primary and secondary copper sulfides. Reyes (2013) and Ipinza and Flaquer (2014) described commercial applications of chloride-based heap leaching. The testing disciplines discussed in this paper will also apply to the development of an acidic chloride leaching system."

The operation of a series wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit determines the soluble loss in many hydrometallurgical operations A study of this circuit yielded expressions which permit calculation of soluble loss for almost any condition of operation. The soluble loss over a range of the circuit variables is presented to illustrate and evaluate circuit performance, The interrelation of factors affecting filter performance and some of the wash circuit, variables are quantatively described. Filter wash, which is governed by wash zone size, filter pulp level and filter feed pulp density, has the greatest affect on soluble loss. Excepting clothing blinding and flocculation the factors which decrease filter capacity also decrease soluble loss. Repulping with water, under some circumstances, can bean important means of soluble loss reduction. Water for primary filter wash, leach pulp density repulp density and wash thickener underflow density have little effect on soluble loss. The dilution of both o the filter pulps with wash solutions is suggested as a means of reducing soluble loss, and at the same, time, controlling the performance of the filters. Blowback and filter cloth blinding seriously increase soluble loss.

Phase One of Copenhagen Metro opened on October 19th, 2002 and is already a great success. 11 stations are open and Phase Two with 6 additional stations will open during 2003. Phases One and Two include 21 km dual track, whereof 10 km is in tunnel. 17 stations (six deep, three shallow, and eight above ground) will service passengers with trains running at 90 seconds intervals. This paper will discuss the various aspects of the Metro, where construction methods include TBM bored, NATM, Cut & Cover, Secant Piles and Diaphragm Walls.

Reagent control for optimum concentrate yield was studied by laboratory batch flotation tests simulating the Groveland plant flotation circuit in which a rougher concentrate is cleaned twice. The reagents were a fatty acid collector, a sulphonate collector and sulphuric acid. The study included two types of flotation feed representative of the reground and deslimed tailing from the spiral concentration circuit, one when the ore mineral is predominantly specularite and the other when it is magnetite. The factorial design included three levels of fatty acid, five levels of sulphonate and five levels of H2S04, with the two types of ore in nested blocks, making up a total of 75 tests. Similarity of results and reproducibility were established in preliminary tests. The final tests were performed in random order under closely controlled conditions following the established procedure.

The model originally proposed by Austin, et al., has been modified in the light of further investigation of the breakage laws in SAG milling. The model uses a fully-mixed reactor for short L/D mills and calculates the breakage of small particles by the nipping action of balls and pebbles. The autogenous self-breakage of larger lumps is treated as an effective means of fast breaking rock and much slower breaking rock. Experiments show that fast autogenous breakage can be treated as a first-order breakage with an overall specific breakage rate which incorporates fracture and chipping. Similarly, slow breakage incorporates fracture and abrasion. Autogenous breakage is cushioned by the accumulation of fine material. Simulation results are compared to results from tests in a 2 m diameter continuous pilot-scale SAG mill. Future work is discussed.

Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão Mine in Brazil. They are predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and, less frequently, yellow apatite. The chemical compositions of these types of apatite were determined by electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Blue and green apatite responded well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite has the lowest phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5 ) content and largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) grades and lowest substitution level.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

"Construction of the longest road tunnel in Mexico is part of Acapulco’s alternate roadway to the scenic roadway project. This article provides a brief summary regarding details of the construction since the project began. Work was done by skilled engineers and Mexican workers that includes outstanding execution of the work in an urban and tourist area. This project will have a strong impact on the steady development of the port of Acapulco.Project locationAcapulco’s Alternate Roadway Project is currently under construction in the city of Acapulco, located in the Guerrero state of Mexico. It is an 8-km (5-mile) long roadway that starts at the Icacos neighborhood, heading toward Acapulco’s airport, crossing a drill-and-blast tunnel that is 3,160 m (10,350 ft) long under Veladero Park, a mountainous area. The tunnel overburden reaches a depth of 380 m (1,250 ft) approximately at the central point of the horizontal alignment, and continues with a 4-km (2.5-mile) long elevated road to connect to the existing Viaducto Diamante toll road (Fig. 1).Tunnel construction has already been finished using two portals for drilling and blasting operations; Brisamar Portal on the west side and Cayaco Portal on the east side (Fig. 2).Geometric dataOnly two main excavation cross-sections were considered in the executive design. The first one corresponds to the running tunnel for a three-lane vehicle section, with crosssection areas between 120 and 130 m2 (1,290 and 1,400 sq ft) taking into consideration different geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 3).The second one corresponds to eight emergency bays, each one 50 m (164 ft) long, laid down within the tunnel outline, located at 400 m (1,312 ft) from each one with excavation cross-sections between 156 to 169 m2 (1,680 to 1,820 sq ft), in accordance to geological and geotechnical conditions to be encountered (Fig. 4).The tunnel’s horizontal alignment is completely straight, having a small curve within the vertical alignment on Cayaco portal, because there were some differences in levels when tunnel excavation started. Tunnel slopes were designed in such a way that rainwater does not run down into the tunnel at any time."

INTRODUCTION As practiced today, longwall mining is a mechanical version of an established mining system. The equipment for longwall mining consists of four basic units: roof supports, face conveyor, winning or mineral-getting ma¬chine, and stage-loader conveyor. The system mines relatively thin slices of mineral across a predetermined face length in a virtually continuous sequence. As the winning machine cuts, the mineral is loaded automatically onto the face conveyor. In turn, the face conveyor is pushed over into the newly cut track by hydraulic rams attached to the conveyor and the roof supports. The roof supports then are lowered individu¬ally from the roof, advanced to the repositioned con¬veyor, and reset to the roof. At the end of the pass, the longwall cutter is pushed over, and a slice is taken in the opposite direction, so the system repeats itself. Fig. I illustrates a typical longwall mining system. The principle behind the longwall mining system is that the roof is supported only immediately adjacent to the worked seam, keeping the blocks of immediate roof clamped securely from the face to the rear of the sup¬ports. At the rear of the supports, the roof is allowed to fall and break up, with the swell of the broken material eventually establishing an equilibrium in the strata be¬hind the mined area. Fig. 2 illustrates the principle of longwall support. There are two distinct types of longwall mining. The longwall retreating system is the most common in the United States, South Africa, and Australia. The longwall advancing system is the most common in the re¬maining industrialized countries such as Britain, Ger¬many, Poland, and the Soviet Union. The longwall retreating system comprises a mining panel, where the roadways that form the head entry (end at which mineral is delivered from the face con¬veyor to a stage-loader conveyor) and the tail entry are predriven before the longwall units starts production. In the longwall advancing system, the longwall unit makes the head and tail entries as the face advances, utilizing various techniques to prevent the entries from being destroyed as they are left in a consolidating gob area. Fig. 3 illustrates the comparative approaches of the longwall retreating and advancing operations. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated rapid froth flotation through more efficient bubble-particle collisions that improved the overall flotation kinetics. An in-line static mixer efficiently mixed the bubbles, water, and ore, selectively attaching these bubbles to the hydrophobic mineral's surface. As the mixture entered the flotation chamber, the hydrophobic mineral was already attached to the bubbles and was quickly floated away from the remaining ore pulp. The rapid flotation system was evaluated for beneficiation with a western porphyry copper ore containing 0.67 pct copper, and a phosphate-bearing amine flotation tailings sample containing 9.5 pct P2O5 in a quartz matrix. Over 88 pct of the copper was recovered from the ore in a rougher concentrate containing 5.9 pct copper at a rate 7 times faster than conventional flotation. Sixty percent of the quartz in the phosphate-bearing sample was floated at a rate 4 times faster than conventional flotation. The unfloated product retained 80 pct of the phosphate in a l6.9-pct P2O5 concentrate.

"Recent requirements to reduce thermal coal plant emissions, and ultrafine coal's tendency to produce these emissions due to its typically high ash and moisture contents have limited the use of ultrafine coal. Ultrafine coal in beneficiation plants are usually either disposed of in tailing ponds at a loss in combustible material or disposed of by blending with coarser higher-grade products, resulting in a reduction in marketed product quality. A study of the options for processing ultrafine coal, consisting of < 200 µm hydrocyclone overflow, with 38.8 percent ash content is presented here. Ultrafine coal was processed based on 200-µm sieve bend and 10-µm hydrocyclone classifications, enhanced gravity separation (EGS) and froth flotation concentration as well as combinations of these. Yield, combustible material recovery (CMR) and product humidity were evaluated as test results.Depending on the processing applied, product ash content could be reduced up to 49.7 percent, and up to 95.8 percent CMR of the actual run of mill feed could be attained. All of the processing options analyzed could reduce produced thermal electric plant emissions due to ash and moisture from 22 to 38 percent of the actual unprocessed ultrafine coal product.Froth flotation was found to be the optimal process, yielding a product with the lowest ash content attained of 19.5 percent and CMR of 92.3 percent. Being the most versatile of the processes evaluated, it is capable of producing coal with varied ash contents but is subject to potential variations in coal flotability. The most complicated of the processing options, a combined sieve bend recovery of the > 200 µm fraction and EGS processing of the 10 to 200 µm fraction was found to be the next best option, attaining a combined 90.1 percent CMR and 25.0 percent ash content. IntroductionMunicipal, regional and national objectives to reduce fossil fuel combustion emissions and their effects on air quality and global weather changes are affecting thermal electric plant operations. Plans and regulations such as President Obama's Clean Power Plan (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, 2015), the European Directive 2010/75/EU (European Commission, 2010) and China’s proposed Enhanced Actions on Climate Change (Wei, 2015) are of major significance to thermal electric plant operations. Although thermal plant efficiencies depend in large part on the losses of heat by plant components, the ash and humidity contents of thermal coal invariably reduce plant efficiencies and increase emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and dust.Any noncombustible material present in thermal coal will result in higher CO2 emissions per unit of energy produced. Since no particle emission control can be totally effective, it is to be anticipated that any reduction in coal ash content will also result in reduced particle emissions. Kurose, Ikeda and Makino (2001) reported that NOx emissions also increase with coal ash content. The effect of coal moisture content during combustion is complex. Kurose, Ikeda and Makino (2001) showed that an increase in coal moisture content significantly reduces thermal NOx to total NOx production, and Bosoaga et al. (2006) showed that it tends to reduce NOx emissions. Since the humidity, pyrite and ash content of thermal coals directly affect thermal electric plant efficiencies and emissions, minimizing these factors should facilitate, at least in part, compliance with thermal electric plant emission limits. This, in turn, would affect the specifications and prices of the coal preparation plant products."

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions.
