Does your company reward its top people? Does coal or copper pay more? Production or engineering? How is the synfuels industry going to influence mining salaries? Do high salaries attract and retain the best people? Do modern compensation systems ensure fairness or destroy entrepreneurial spirit? With our tax system and high standard of living why are we so salary conscious? Salary is not only important for what it can purchase but it is also a yardstick, measuring how well we are doing. We all need money to pay the bills and maintain our standard-of-living, but once we reach a certain point the psychological ramifications become more important than the purely practical side. Even necessary payments like the mortgage and the car are a function of our egos. Are our choices of cars and homes based on simple transportation and shelter?

"The second survey of global copper leaching operations has been completed, the data published in 1998 has been updated. A survey questionnaire was sent to 40 identified copper leach operations around the world including those leach properties still in operation that responded to the 1998 survey. This paper lists the results of 26 operations that responded to the survey. Selected information from the survey is represented in graphical form. INTRODUCTION Copper leaching was first performed by truck dumping huge monolithic stockpiles of ore and flooding the surface with leach solution or lixiviant with little understanding to the parameters that support optimum recovery of the metal. Heap leaching has evolved into a controlled process whereby a complex low grade ore is stacked in shallow lifts (under 10 m in most cases). The ore is usually crushed and agglomerated, conveyor stacked on an engineered containment system (leach pad) and irrigated in a controlled manner. The lixiviant chemistry is designed to extract the optimum amount of metal from the ore. At first glance, heap leaching appears to be simple in nature. In fact, it is a very complex process. A plethora of technologies such as material handling, environmental control, analytical techniques, solution chemistry, hydrology and many others contribute to the design and operation of a heap leach. Heap leaching requires an inter-disciplinary approach between geologists, mining engineers and metallurgists. Many operational factors affect heap leaching. The process must address climatic factors, flexible operation, quality control before and after leaching, physical characteristics of the ore, geology, mineralogy, reagent consumption, solution application rate and methods (wobblers or emitters), particle size, and favorable conditions for bacterial growth and survival. Predicting, troubleshooting, and optimization of leach recovery is a significant challenge when considering the number of variables involved and their interactions The survey updates many of these key operating parameters to the current state of the art. It should provide the reader an excellent benchmarking summary of these factors on a site-by-site basis."

La Colorada Mine was begun in 1993 as a small heap leach mine and was the first operation for Eldorado Gold Corporation. 'This paper describes the growth of the mine to annual production levels near 60,000 ounces of gold and highlights recent improvements that were made to maintain a profitable operation by efficiency gains and cost containment programs.

Despite several methods (empirical, statistical and machine-learning tools) to calculate blast-induced ground vibration, it is not easy to predict and simulate blast vibration precisely under varying blasting loads and strata conditions due to complications in the blasting procedure. In this study, field blast data were simulated in Ansys software using explicit dynamics, and ground vibrations for 20 single-hole blasts were monitored. The densities of emulsion explosives were in the range of 0.9 to 1.15 g/cm3. In the laboratory, rock properties were determined from rock samples collected from the mine site before blasting. The in-hole velocity of detonation (VoD) and density of the emulsion explosive were also determined and used in numerical analysis to know the ground vibrations at specific points. The results of ground vibrations predicted by the model were validated using field data.

Precious metal mineralization at Mt. Hamilton, NV is associated with a polymetallic, garnet-pyroxene skarn system developed in middle to upper Cambrian calcareous shale, limestone, and dolomite. The skarn is developed around the Cretaceous Seligman and Monte Cristo calc-alkaline stocks. Gold is associated with intense retrograde alteration. Later epithermal quartz veins contain gold, silver, base-metal sulfides, and sulfosalts cross-cut skarn alteration. Westmont Mining Inc. is currently developing two mineralized zones containing a geologic resource of about 7 Mt (7.7 million st) that averages 1.7 g/t (0.05 oz per st) gold and 17.2 g/t (0.5 oz per st) silver. The project will have an estimated mine life of seven years, with a planned annual production rate of I t (35,000 oz) of gold and 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of silver.

INTRODUCTION Conveyor belt fires represent a serious hazard in underground mines. This fact is well understood in most mining countries. The statistical data for Ontario mines (1) indicates that the majority of the conveyor fires occurred at the head pulley of the conveyor belt. The main emphasis for fire prevention and detection should then be concentrated at the drive pulley of the conveyor designed to transport non-combustible material. In the case of conveyor belt fires, it is of utmost importance to detect the hazard at an early stage, when the overheating has not yet reached the ignition point. Thermal noise detection sensors were installed in 1987 at several conveyor sites at Inco mines. PRODUCTS OF COMBUSTION THERMAL DEGRADATION OF CONVEYOR BELT Various investigations on conveyor belt fire hazards have been made in the past (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7). Several belt samples (6, 7) were subjected to thermal oxidative degradation. The belts used in these tests were neoprene, polyvinyl chloride and styrene-butadiene rubber (6). About 70 different compounds were identified in the volatile thermooxidative products. As expected, hydrogen chloride was the major toxic product formed, accompanied by relatively low quantities of other toxic compounds such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon disulfide, hydrogen sulfide, benzene, chloroprene, cresols, chloroethanol, formic acid and C8 hydrocarbons. The research investigation (8) performed by the USBM indicated that "smoldering combustibles generate a very low level of CO compared to the level of smoke produced". The cited publication (8), states that, "During smoldering combustion, typical mine combustibles produce about 2.5 times more smoke than CO. As fires develop to their flaming stages, the trend reverses and about eight times as much CO is produced as smoke." The reader is referred to several significant sources of additional information pertaining to emission products that can be found in references (8), (9), and (10). ANALYSIS OF FIRE HAZARDS U.S.A. AND ENGLAND Nearly 15 percent of all underground coal mine fires in the United States involved ignition of conveyor belts (7). In many cases, the fires propagated through thousands of feet of belt entry and created losses in the millions of dollars. Some of these fires consisted of rubber belts. Some involved polyvinyl chloride and neoprene belts that were classified "fire resistant". Typically, a belt fire begins after the conveyor is stopped. The fire is initiated by burning coal dust and grease accumulation around defective rollers or belt drives that have become heated by friction (7). An analysis of 113 conveyor fires (11) showed that 41 originated at the driving pulleys, 32 at the defective rollers, and 40 elsewhere on the conveyor system. The severity of the fire, which can spread along a conveyor road, has been emphasized by the disaster at Creswell Colliery, Derbyshire, on September 26, 1950, when 80 men were overcome and killed by toxic fumes from the fire (12). The fire started from smoldering caused by friction, and developed into a flaming combustion, propagating along the roadway containing the rubber belt at an estimated speed of 40.2 m/s (90 mph), and travelling a total of 650 m (2100 ft) THE INFLAMMATION OF CONVEYOR BELTS THE MECHANISM OF IGNITION Defective operation of a conveyor belt may start a fire in several ways: - Friction of the belt on the drive pulley. - Jamming of a guide roller, and others.

Vanadium is a transition metal, ductile and silver-gray. It is harder than most metals and steels and it has a good resistance to corrosion. It is stable against alkalis and sulfuric and hydrochloric acids. Vanadium is oxidized in air at about 660° C (1,220° F), although an oxide layer forms even at room temperature. The chemistry of vanadium is noteworthy for the accessibility of the four adjacent oxidation states, 2-5. In aqueous solution, the colors are lilac V2+, green V3+, blue VO2+ and, at high pH, yellow VO42-. Considered to be as abundant as zinc, metallic vanadium is not found in nature, but it is known to exist in about 65 different minerals. Economically significant examples include patronite (VS4), vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), associated to the uranium mineral carnotite (K2(UO2)2(VO4)2?3H2O) and in a vanadium mica called roscoelite K(V3+,Al,Mg)[(Si,Al)4O10] (OH)2. Other important vanadium ore oxides are montroseite (V,Fe)O(OH) and corvusite (Na,Ca,K)V8O2.4H2O. Much of the world?s vanadium mine production comes from magnetite-hosted deposits and, to a lesser extent, sedimentary-hosted sandstone.

After the systematic closure of Europe’s coalfields in the late twentieth century, the emphasis is now clearly on industry’s environmental legacy. One aspect of the latter is the longterm surface movement above abandoned coal mines. The analysis of satellite data shows that the subsidence lasts longer than generally assumed. However, a few years after the flooding of the abandoned underground coal mines, a new phenomenon was observed, i.e., the direction of the surface movement was reversed. The phase of upsidence has already lasted for several decades, and only future measurements will tell how long it continues. A key conclusion is that the regions with maximum subsidence do not necessarily correspond to the greatest upsidence. In other words, buildings and infrastructure are subjected to a different loading from this upsidence than during the subsidence phase. The longterm surface movements have an impact on vulnerable structures in the densely populated regions of the former deep coal mining areas in Europe. These movements create additional damage. This new knowledge is also relevant for mines that are still in operation or future mines that are planned.

INTRODUCTION From its beginnings in the first decade of this century, flotation has gradually moved to a predominant role in mineral separation. There are several reasons for this, the continuing trend toward treat¬ment of lower-grade and more finely disseminated ores being the major one. Not only has this been true for sulfide ores to which the process was first applied commercially, but also for most nonsulfide ores as well. A second factor has been the broad applicability of the process with respect to particle size; it is effective from 8 to 10 mesh to below 10m. Finally, more so than for any other separation process, flotation has almost no limitations in separating minerals. Gravity, magnetic, or electrostatic processes are either applicable to particular minerals, or to a restricted number of mineral combinations. Flotation, on the other hand, can utilize the wide range of surface chemical differences among minerals, and an equally wide range of reagents. The recent availability of selective flocculation capabilities on a commercial scale as an adjunct to flotation should remove one of the limitations to the process in the very fine particle range. History Although flotation was anticipated in a 19th century patent to Haynes, its first significant industrial uses were in the early 20th century in Australia. According to Hoover,' the Pottter-Del-prat pro¬cess had a "measure of success" at Broken Hill's Block 14 mine in 1905-1906, and was definitely successful at the BHP Mine, where it produced 80,000 tpy of zinc concentrates. Both the Mineral Separa¬tion and the Elmore processes had early trials in Australia also, with both successes and failures. The first application in the United States was in 1911, when the Hyde process was used by the Butte and Superior Copper Co. on a zinc ore in Montana. By 1916 Hoover could list 46 applications to copper, lead, and zinc ores, mainly in the United States. Ten years later Taggart2 listed almost a thousand patents covering processes and reagents which with few exceptions laid the foundations for modern practice. Included were: sulfidizing of oxides; leach-precip¬itation-flotation; cyanides, sulfites, sulfides, and oxidants for selective depression of sulfides; starch, tannin, and glue as depressants; and xanthates, dithiophosphates, and oleic acid as collectors. Within an¬other 20 years, all of these were in commercial use along with amines for floating silica from phosphates, and synthetic frothers were com¬peting with pine oil and cresylic acid. Copper electrowinning operations have dramatically improved their ability to produce high quality copper at low costs over the past several decades. Even so, some fundamental knowledge is still lacking that could allow operations to run even more efficiently. For example, a rule of thumb exists that estimates a current efficiency loss of 2-3% per gram per liter of iron in the electrolyte. While several laboratory studies have been performed that demonstrate this rule of thumb is likely true, no definitive relationship exists. In this paper, the first steps in developing a definitive relationship are presented. The effective diffusivity of ferric ions in synthetic copper electrowinning solutions was measured using chronoamperometry and the Cottrell equation. The effective diffusivity of ferric ion was determined as a function of electrolyte concentration and temperature. Synthetic electrolytes were then used in laboratory-scaled copper electrowinning experiments, where relationships between current efficiency and solution composition were found to exist under stagnant conditions. Our present and future needs for base and previous metals are not satisfied by the present rate of new viable discoveries. This deficiency can be met by increasing the number of competent exploration organizations and by doing a more effective job of prospecting. My principal purpose is to show that new discoveries can be increased by improving the use of exploration techniques in a concept-oriented exploration program. Exploration techniques are defined and classified. The effectiveness of many exploration groups can be improved by better definition of objectives and thorough planning of the exploration program. The role of objectives, planning, and the use of techniques are discussed within the scope of the exploration framework. Common pitfalls in the use of exploration data are identified such as: inconsistency of geologic measurements, negative use of data, indiscriminate use of geo-surveys, collection of irrelevant information, and the unrealistic desire for exploration panaceas. Suggestions for improving the use of techniques include the use of multiple-working hypotheses, improvements in the quality of exploration data, use of geology in the selection, planning and interpretation of geochemical and geophysical surveys, and the recognition of variables and limitations affecting the interpretation of exploration data. The critical role of geologic mapping by Federal and State agencies is mentioned for satisfying the continual exploration demand for better geologic maps and filling many gaps that currently exist. The importance of imaginative and qualified exploration personnel is discussed as well as the maximum utilization of their exploration creativity. The problem of integrating field studies, research and training at universities and research institutions is identified. The need for high-quality research in economic geology is emphasized especially the importance of reducing the steadily increasing gap between basic and applied research.

Ground control failures are one of the main causes of accidents in the underground stone mining industry. Some of the fundamental tools for rockfall hazard identification are related to rock mass characterization and geotechnical discontinuity mapping. Recent technological advances in these methods are related to remote sensing techniques and pointcloud processing software for automated discontinuity mapping. Remote sensing techniques, such as LiDAR and photogrammetry, generate multimillion-point clouds with millimetric precision, capturing the structure of the rock mass. The automated point-cloud processing tools offer alternative algorithm-based methods to characterize and map these discontinuities. However, their applicability is constrained by multiple factors, such as site-specific conditions of the rock mass and the parameters used within the mapping algorithms. This paper evaluates the performance of automated discontinuity extraction software compared with manual virtual discontinuity mapping. Sampling windows from laser-scanned sections in an underground limestone mine are defined and mapped using the Discontinuity Set Extractor (DSE) opensource software. Results from the virtual discontinuity software are compared with manually extracted fractures from I-Site based on reviewing orientation, trace length, spacing, number of extracted discontinuities, and processing time.

"The principal role of the geologist is to recognize the existence of phenomena before trying to explain them" - B.M. Keilau, 1825; A. Holmes, 1965 Some important groups of mineral deposits in the layered rocks of orogenic belts or greenstone belts occur in horizons characterized by the presence of exceptional amounts of silica, iron and carbon, with more or less significant amounts of manganese. Generally, the rocks involved are well banded. In practice, these five physical features - four compositional and one geometric - are found with many lithological guises. Iron formation, in the full, modern sense of the term (James, 1954), quartzite, ferruginous quartzite, chert, jasper, "tetsusekiei" (Horikoshi, 1969), tuffaceous jasper ("purple porphyry" - Anderson and Creasey, 1958, p. 36), ferruginous or graphitic shale, argillite, slate or schist, and hematitic tuff are but a few of the more familiar of the names that have been assigned to these rocks. Widely acknowledged and well-documented examples of metallic deposits found in such sediments include concentrations of iron and manganese and stratabound, polymetallic, massive pyritic sulfides. Less familiar examples include occurrences of asbestos (Miles, 1953; and Coetzee, et al., 1976), antimony (Coetzee, 1976), and perhaps stratabound deposits of Au-Cu-U-W-etc., such as Aitik in Sweden (Mining Magazine, 1975; and Nilsson, 1979) and Olympic Dam in South Australia (Roberts and Hudson, 1983). The case of gold is intriguing. An association between gold and iron formation has been identified at several famous deposits and districts, such as Yellowknife, N.W.T. (Morton, 1979), Homestake, S. Dak. (Sawkins and Rye, 1974), Vubachikwe, Zimbabwe (Fripp, 1976) and the Barberton district, R.S.A. (Hammerbeck, 1976). Yet a critical reading reveals the existence of many other hitherto unsuspected examples. The purpose of this note is to draw attention to that omission and the apparent explanation for it. It is not hard to detect the two most probable reasons for the discrepancy between reality and the record.Most occurrences of gold are associated, not with the familiar banded iron formation or interbedded magnetite and chert (technically, the magnetite-banded variety of the oxide facies), but with the enigmatic carbonate, sulfide and silicate facies of iron formation and/or with rocks evidently related to iron formation. All too commonly, the unfamiliar facies of iron formation have been identified by field and mine geologists and not a few researchers as products of regional metamorphism and hydrothermal alteration, as mafic igneous rocks, or as conventional sediments, ie., without regard to their intrinsically ferruginous nature. The justification for these two complementary assertions is largely to be found in the recognition of a characteristic suite of metals and minerals in gold deposits known to be associated with iron formations. Although, from a geological standpoint, a lithological association is more important than a mineralogical assemblage, the latter is the more likely of the two to be diagnostic. This arises from the different natures of mineral and rock classifications, The identification of a mineral or an element is a matter of fact. Owing to the genetic component inseparable from petrographic nomenclature, viz., "igneous": a rock (believed to have been) derived from a melt, the identification of rocks depends on inferences or conclusions about their mode of formation - conclusions that are commonly debatable and, all too often, involve subjective judgements. This is especially prone to be true, if - as at many of the gold occurrences in question - the host rocks have been metamorphosed and/or "altered". In the notes that follow greater weight has accordingly been assigned to elemental and mineralogical than to host rock composition. In other words, if, in a given gold occurrence, the suite of metals and minerals present conforms to the standards of the subject class, whereas the names assigned to host rocks do not, the latter will be viewed as suspect.

A statistically designed pot grate- kiln test program was conducted to determine the agglomeration process variables necessary for increasing the low temperature disintegration resistance (LTD) and reducibility (R40) of magnetite-based Empire acid pellets. The ASTM tumble index and compression strength were to be maintained at an acceptable level. Six process variables, bentonite addition level, preheat time and temperature, firing time and temperature, and cooling rate, were investigated within the constraints of the Empire plant. The bentonite addition level and firing temperature had the largest effect on pellet properties. The results of this program were verified during a pl ant trial. The target firing temperature at the Empire Plant has been decreased for increasing the LTD and R40 of commercially produced Empire pellets

The main industrial minerals produced are non-metallic - clay, dolomite, limestone, pumice, salt, serpentine, and silica sand. The other minerals, some with minor production, include diatomite, feldspar, magnesite, sulphur, asbestos, and perlite. Energy and metallic minerals and aggregate are excluded from this account. These industrial minerals occur in a wide range of rock types and geological ages. For example clays are known from the weathering products of Cretaceous rhyolite and leaching of Eocene coal measures; from Quaternary weathering of contemporary loess and shallow marine sediments, and of greywacke of Triassic-Jurassic age; and from the hydrothermal alteration of Late Cenozoic acidic volcanic rocks.

A new polyhalite fertilizer mine is currently being developed in the UK by Anglo American Crop Nutrients. The project includes the construction of a Mineral Transport Tunnel almost 37 kms long to house a conveyor belt that will move polyhalite from the production shaft at the mine to a materials handling facility at the port. The project sets a new standard in terms of an ultra-long tunnel drive and sustainable, environmentally friendly and efcient material transport. The paper highlights in particular the . m diameter TBM in use for the construction of the ultra-long tunnelling section.

There has been a steady increase in shiploading capacities in the last 20 years. One of the reasons has been the general increase in ship sizes, with the largest vessels currently around 280,000 DWT in the bulk trades. Obviously, the large vessels can accept loads faster and their economic utilization justifies higher loading rates, up to a point. The high capacity facilities have loading rates far beyond this point. The economic logic of these facilities is based on the fact that for a given annual throughput the capital and operating cost of a single high capacity system is less than that of two smaller systems. Thus, where the projected throughputs are large, there is a great incentive to reduce capital costs by maximizing capacity. Tubarao, in Brazil, designed for a 100 million ton per year throughput with one finger pier and one high capacity berth is a successful demonstration of this approach. In the current state of the art, the high capacity systems have shiploading capacities in the range of 10,000 - 16,000 TPH, for annual throughputs of 20 million tons and larger per loading berth.

The development of pelletizing during the last ten years has continued, however, self-fluxing pellets have not been regularly and commercially produced for use in blast furnaces, except as Kobe Steel, Ltd., Japan. This paper tells about unique developments for self-fluxing pellets, and their effects when used in Kobe Steel's No. 3 blast furnace at the Nadahama Works (inner volume 1845 Nm3, hearth diameter 9.5 m)., Several phases of the pelletizing process are discussed individually, and also their relation to performance in blast furnace operation. Special emphasis is placed on proper preparation of the limestone added to the raw materials, and indurating at optimum conditions. Means of improving pellet quality by correct control of size distribution of the raw materials used in pelletizing, and indurating temperatures, are also discussed. As basicity (CaO/SiO2) of pellets increased 0. 1, coke consumption decreased 3. 8 to 4. 2 kg per ton of hot metal, when using 70% pellets in the iron burden.

Explosives are probably the most widely used and most mysterious large scale' mining tools of modern times. The post black powder explosives were primarily nitroglycerin-based straight dynamites, ammonia dynamites, blasting gelatin, gelatin dynamites, ammonia gelatin dynamites, etc. Of these, the strongest and highest velocity explosive used in industrial operations is blasting gelatin, which is nitroglycerin colloided with a nitrocellulose of medium nitrogen content in proportions which give the product a plastic character, or about 93 to 7. Many variations of the basic groups above were developed by substituting ammonium nitrate and/or sodium nitrate for some of the nitroglycerin. The nitrates being insensitive to caps required a certain percentage of nitroglycerin to sustain detonation in smaller quantities or diameters. Paralleling the development of industrial dynamites was the development of more expensive, highly sophisticated explosives which were developed for specific military purposes. Such explosives as Amatol, RDX, Composition A, Composition B, Composition C, Lead Azide, PETN (Pentaerythritol Tetranitrate), Tetryl, Pentolite, TNT, etc., were primarily military explosives. Amatol, which is a cast mixture of ammonium nitrate and TNT (Trinitrotoluene), and identified by percentage of AN versus TNT as 50-50 Amatol, 80-20 Amatol, etc., was a favorite World War I explosive. RDX, or Cyclonite, was widely used in World War II. Also used during WW II were compositions A. B, and C, which were mixtures of RDX (Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine), TNT, and other nitrotoluenes. These high explosives, along with nitroglycerine, are exact chemical compositions or mixtures of exact chemical compositions which are individually explosive, or in other words, individually capable of explosive chemical decomposition when properly initiated. These chemical decompositions result in the formation of simpler compounds and/or large quantities of common combustion gases, and large amounts of energy in the form of heat. Of these, the most powerful is RDX which, based on the ballistic mortor test, is 1.5 times as powerful as TNT. Chemically, the decomposition of TNT releases about as much energy as the reaction of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil.

There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste.
