Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. The individual owner-miner may hire relatives or neighbors and give them a wage or he may turn the mine into a joint ownership situation. They

Automation and robotics are the keys to new intelligent autonomous mining systems which can remove operators from the hazardous and stressful mining environment and provide the tools for greater productivity. This pa-per presents the components necessary for a mining Intelligent Task Control System (ITCS) in dynamic unstructured mining environments. The proposed concept is applied to develop the ITCS for an autonomous excavator. The design and implementation of a fuzzy logic controller for an excavator that uses force/torque sensor feedback to complete excavation tasks is presented. Initial experimental results are also given.

Iron ore pelletizing using compressive and shear action on wet mixture feed has been studied. The physical properties, namely, moisture content, drop strength, green compressive strength (GCS), dry compressive strength (DCS), porosity, and cold crushing strength (CCS), have been studied. Pelletizing tests were carried out on four different types of ore, namely, hematite ore, magnetite ore, goethite ore, and sinter return fines. The inference of shear forces on silica distribution index in dry pellet has been studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Significant improvement in physical strength was observed due to compressive and shear forces on the pellet mixture feed. However, decrease in moisture content and ball porosity has been observed. Silica distribution index improved by 1.72 times for hematite ore, 1.47 times for magnetite ore, and 1.68 times for goethite ore. It has been found that bubble cavity has been reduced which is good indicator in terms of physical properties.

Research objectives included 1) determine relationships if any between spectral response of soil and soil textural groups, Unified Soil Classification subgroups and selected landforms and 2) develop computer assisted techniques for engineering soils mapping of remotely sensed data. The sire in northeastern Kansas, 1.6 Km by 43 Km (1.0 mi by 27 mi), contained glacial and alluvial soils. Multispectral scanner data (0.40 to 1.80 pm) collected at 915 meters altitude (3,000 feet) were analyzed using two distinct computer techniques: the nonsupervised approach involving delineation of soil training areas directly by computer and the supervised approach entailing training area selection manually by the researcher. Computer classification of surface materials follows both methods. Non supervised analysis results failed to show a consistant relation- ship between landform type and soil spectral class. Landforms correlating well displayed either unusually bright or unusually dark spectral signatures. Supervised analysis results showed a strong relationship between soil texture and soil spectral class. A moderately strong tie was shown between engineering soils groups (ML, CL, CH and OH) and their respective spectral classes, and a weak association between landform type and soil spectral class. An analysis procedure for engineering soils mapping by computer of remotely sensed data was developed. 1. Locate cultural features by visual examination of imagery. 2. Produce generalized bare soil-vegetation- water map using nonsupervised technique. 3. Outline significant soil fields for computer training using supervised approach. 4. Computer-classify entire area based on these soil fields.

Iron ore pellets use bentonite clay as binder at dosages from 0.5to 1.0% (10 to 20 pounds per ton) of moist iron ore concentrate. Bentonite is typically shipped hundreds of miles from Wyoming to the Lake Superior iron ore district. It is therefore best to know how effective a bentonite will be before it is shipped and used to bind concentrate into pellets. Current tests of bentonite effectiveness include: plate water absorption, methylene blue uptake, free swell, exchangeable cations, and glycolated layer expansion. However, these tests have many disadvantages: First, they only measure the ability of a bentonite to expand, disperse, or absorb, not how well it will bond. Second, most of the tests require up to 20 hours to perform. Bentonite only has a few minutes to interact within the concentrate before it is indurated (sintered). These long-term tests may not reflect the true behavior of bentonite. Third, the tests are tedious and often results are inconsistent between different iron ore concentrates, labs, and technicians. Fourth, some of the testing equipment is difficult to procure. Fifth, procedures are often difficult to standardize. In this paper, the Binder Effectiveness Strength (BESt) test to evaluate binders for iron ore pellets is presented that: measures the ability of bentonite to bond, requires only about two hours to complete, is simple and reproducible, and utilizes readily available equipment that has been standardized for decades.

iliary agent was proposed. The mineralogical transformation and silicon extraction kinetics of laterite nickel ore in alkaline hydrothermal treatment were studied. The effects of reaction temperature (175 ~ 250℃), molar ratios of sodium hydroxide to ore (1.05 ~ 1.2:1), and laterite nickel ore particle size (44 ~ 178 μm) on the extraction ratio of silica were investigated by using the shrinking core model. The results show that the extraction ratio of silica increases with the increase of reaction temperature, sodium hydroxide to ore molar ratio, reaction time, and the decrease of raw ore particle size. The kinetic analysis shows that the separation of silica in laterite ore can be described by internal diffusion model. The apparent activation energy (Ea) of the reaction was 8.87 kJ mol− 1, and the kinetic modeling was established.

Adaptive management can be described as a structured, iterative process of robust decision making in the face of uncertainty, with a goal of reducing uncertainty over time through system monitoring. Adaptive management is a tool which can be applied to not only change a system, but learn about the system (Holling, 1978). Adaptive management has been used in ecosystem management for years and guidance is provided in a variety of handbooks and publications. Adaptive management can be applied to industrial facilities and mines through the use of an adaptive environmental management plan (AEMP) and associated practices. The goal of this paper is to provide an explanation of how the plans and practices support regulatory agency approvals and permitting, span the life-cycle of mines, manage uncertainty, and assist in addressing mining impact and legacy issues. AEMPs and associated practices are useful tools to address the uncertainties in identifying, evaluating, and managing impacts of proposed new and modified mining facilities undergoing environmental review. Once a proposed project is approved, the AEMP continues as a living document, being informed, revised, and adapted by the operations. The AEMP can serve as an ongoing management tool for describing and evaluating environmental impacts, continuing in operations into post reclamation. If initiated during planning and environmental review of a project (and in some locations such as the United States [U.S.], the preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)), the AEMP becomes a basis to identify, monitor, and manage potential project environmental impacts. Development of an AEMP for an operating mine is also beneficial since there are generally developing and ongoing environmental issues at those facilities as well. Over time, the AEMP is adapted to changing requirements and conditions including those anticipated and unanticipated. Ever increasing scrutiny of mining projects and the complexities of the EIS process highlight the uncertainties inherent in impact predictions. In making the momentous decision of initial project approval, these uncertainties can discourage the regulatory agencies? actions and create stakeholder anxiety and controversy about a project. A well-designed AEMP can support the decision to approve an EIS and enable a project to move forward. Additionally, an AEMP can inform financial assurance estimates and revisions over the life of a mine providing all parties including the citizens of the surrounding communities with greater confidence that potential environmental impacts and risks will be well managed.

The Riley Pass strip mine is an abandoned uranium-bearing lignite deposit in Harding County, South Dakota, covering about 150 acres of highwalls, pit floor and mine spoils exhibiting elevated levels of radioactivity. Six reclamation design alternatives were developed, ranging from doing nothing to reclaiming to approximate original con-tour. The alternatives were evaluated for expense, site stabilization, and mitigation of public safety hazards. A comparative economic evaluation on three of the alternatives was completed for the Forest Service in selecting an alternative and substantiating federal funding requests. This evaluation included economic impacts associated with physical and radiologic health hazards, affects on recreational users, socioeconomic impacts and environmental improvement.

Acidic treatment of enargite (Cu3AsS4) dissolves both arsenic and copper from the mineral and then attempts to separate them in the leach solution. The reactivity of enargite was examined in acidic solutions, over the pH range 1-7, to determine a potential range for co-dissolution.. Enargite mineral samples from Butte, MT and Quirivilca, Peru were used as working electrodes in a cyclic voltammetry corrosion cell setup, which were then cycled multiple times over -1000 to 1000 mV. Surface reactions and transitions were characterized using in-situ Raman spectroscopy, which were then compared to updated predominance diagrams for the copper-arsenic-sulfur system from a previous study done under alkaline conditions. The region of co-dissolution is limited to > 600 mV vs. SHE and pH < 1 under the proposed diagram.

Project engineering and development is a process of optimisation of capital, operating and financial costs, and extraction rates in the light of current and forecast economic conditions for the sale of the product. The aim of the process is to maximize financial returns to the sponsors (project owners) within many often conflicting constraints. Thus, the sponsor&apos;s engineering and financial staff have a common goal, with performance measured in financial terms. Consequently, each group must be aware of, and responsive to, the constraints imposed upon the other. For financial staff, the increasing size and complexity, and escalating capital costs of new ventures have required them to seek finance in larger amounts, and by non-traditional methods. In addition, senior management are requiring indications of the availability of finance as a pre-requisite to a decision to commence project development activities.

The study investigates SO2 leaching of low-grade ferruginous manganese ores to selectively recover manganese as MnSO4 and produce battery-grade electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD). The effects of leaching parameters (duration, temperature, SO2 flow rate) on Mn recovery were studied. Under optimum conditions, 97.9% Mn recovery was achieved. The MnSO4 leach liquor was purified and used for electrowinning EMD with 88.01% purity and battery-active γ structure.

Automated temporary roof support (ATRS) systems have been incorporated into roof bolters since the 1970&apos;s. During roof bolting, many injuries have occurred from large pieces of draw rock falling inby the ATRS beam and tipping back into the operator&apos;s area. Other injuries have occurred due to smaller, sharp rocks falling onto the operator&apos;s hand and arm during initiation of roof bolt drilling. These injuries are attributed to weak immediate roof, sometimes called roof skin failure. Even though ATRS systems support the roof and provide a measure of protection against roof skin failure, additional hazards sometimes do exist immediately inby and outby the supported roof. Design innovations such as the ATRS mounted rocker pad deflector systems have been designed to improve the roof bolter operator safety. This paper will inform the reader of the hazards, machine evolution through different design solutions, and the current state of the art in preventing roof skin failure injuries when roof bolting.

The Pan American Mine, in southeastern Nevada, is about 26 miles west southwest of Pioche, Nevada, and about 266 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Utah. The mine is located in the Comet Mining District, and since the ore occurrence is generally the same in the Comet and well known adjacent Pioche Mining Districts, the history of the two shall be considered the same. The Pioche District began about 1869 with the production of high grade gold and silver from fissure veins in the Cambrian Prospect Mountain quartzite. Peak production was reached in 1872 and then declined with sporadic production until 1924, when Combined Metals Reduction Co. shipped its first, complex sulphide ores mined from the CM bed at Pioche. Extensive ore bodies in this CM bed attracted interest in the same bed in the Comet District. Small pockets of high grade silver-lead were mined from fissures cutting the CM and other limestone beds above. Exploration in the CM beds at this time proved a large area of mineralization too low grade to be considered ore.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations), even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of possible explosion pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mine seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble, in combination with a conventional mine seal, so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed and attenuated, and the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a “passive mine blast attenuator” (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals.

The mining and use of coal creates a significant amount of waste material that needs to be safely disposed of. It is likely that in the medium term, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the U.S. will categorize all such products as a new category – special waste. This would make the materials subject to many of the requirements for handling toxic waste, which will complicate the disposal of such products and significantly increase the disposal costs. Underground disposal would, therefore, seem to be the obvious solution, especially if the placed material can have low or no permeability, so that water table pollution does not present a serious long-term issue after placement. Significant additional advantages could be derived from this backfilling, including the reduction or elimination of surface subsidence, increased extraction, reduced surface waste disposal footprint and the elimination of explosion-proof seals in worked out areas. The research using a specific coal waste product as a typical example proved that the method of placing the backfill at a high density with low permeability is technically viable, but it must be made more cost effective and the other potential benefits quantified and costed in order to present a true comparison.

"It is generally known that spontaneous combustion potential is a function of coal rank, with low-rank coals having high susceptibility to self-ignition and high-rank coals having low potential. To establish this functional relationship and use it as an engineering tool to identify the propensity of coal to self-heat, both rank and spontaneous combustion potential should be quantified. ASTM D388 is normally used to classify coals by rank, but this classification system can only serve a qualitative analysis. To classify coals by their potential for spontaneous combustion, the self-heating temperature (SHT) method originally developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) was used by Litton and Page (1994) to correlate coal rank with spontaneous combustion potential. In that method, the SHTs of coal determined by an adiabatic experiment are linked with proximate analysis results through a proposed concept known as the “moist fuel ratio.” This ratio is a function of moisture, volatile matter and fixed carbon, all of which have widely different content percentages in different ranks of coal and have strong relationships with coal rank. However, the method is highly empirical, and there is large standard deviation between experimental data and calculated results. The equation correlating the coal quality parameters to determine SHT should be improved with more experimental data.This paper reports on the development of a new system for predicting the spontaneous combustion potential of U.S. coals, based on coal composition data from the U.S. Geological Survey’s coal quality database. First, the user is provided with a quantified classification of coal rank. Second, based on experimental SHT data covering a wide range of ranks from lignite to low-volatile bituminous coal, the original USBM correlation for predicting SHT is improved for the respective rank of coal. The relationship between the rank and SHT of U.S. coals was developed and plotted. The plot diagram can be used for a quick estimate of the SHT of a U.S. coal and as a cost-effective tool for the initial risk assessment of a new mine development."

INTRODUCTION Tunnel construction has always been an extremely high risk form of contracting primarily due to the inaccessability of information concerning the ground conditions to be encountered during excavation. We certainly make every effort to overcome this problem through borings, geological research, site visits, etc.; but at best owners, engineers and contractors alike are only able to interpolate a relatively small amount of factual data from isolated sections of the project into a forecast of ground conditions for the entire project. In essence this becomes an "educated guessing game" with risk to reward ratios (and subsequently the bid price) in direct relationship to the contractor&apos;s confidence in the quality of the guess. In many instances it is economically or physically infeasible to obtain information and of course the total picture is never known until the project is complete. This problem effects the contract format as well as price. The contractor&apos;s ability to handle unforseen problems on the project become extremely important as to the project&apos;s overall success. The following pages contain an actual case history of a project which affords an excellent example of the entire spectrum of situations resulting from tunnel construction in difficult ground conditions.

A ventilation research study was conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and a cooperating trona mine in the Green River basin of Wyoming, USA. The mine operation uses the longwall mining method in trona bed 17, a commonly mined unit in the region. The longwall face length is 228 m (750 ft), and caving on the face occurred up to the back of the longwall shields. The mine is ventilated using a main blowing fan and a bleeder shaft. For this study, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas was released in two separate monitoring experiments. For the first experiment, tracer gas was released on the face, this test focused on airflow along the longwall face of the active panel. Face test showed the airflow patterns to be more complex than just head-to-tail flow in the main ventilation air stream on the active panel. For the second experiment, tracer gas was released 2 crosscuts inby the face on the headgate side, this test focused on gas transport in the mined-out portion of the same active panel. Gob test showed a pathway of movement through the front of the active panel gob that moved outby from the tailgate corner. The primary pathway of tracer gas movement in the active panel gob was towards the headgate and tailgate bleeders and out of a bleeder shaft. The rate of movement towards the back of the gob was measured to be 0.19 m/s (37 fpm).

Geostatistics are increasingly recognized as powerful tools for reserve evaluation and grade control. It is also generally accepted that geologic input is required for the results of a geostatistical study to be meaningful. The role of the geologist is significant at all stages, whether it be to oversee the creation of the database, to assist in the statistical and semivariogran studies, to ensure appropriate block evaluation and kriging, or to review the results obtained. However the link between geology and geostatistics is often complex and not well understood. A presentation is made of the areas where geologic input is needed, and of the tools which the geologist should have at his disposition to ensure that his role is fulfilled. Organization of a Geostatisticel Study To be acceptable as the basis for financial investment, a geostatistical reserve estimation should be composed of four phases, the last phase being optional: Phase 1 - Background discussions, Phase 2 - Computation, Phase 3 - Reserve reporting, Phase 4 - Reserve audit. During the background discussions (Phase 1) the role of the geologist is primordial, as it is then that most decisions will be made concerning the geologic factors to be included in the geostatistical model.
