A rigorous horizontal drilling and chemical grouting program was specified beneath the Hollywood Freeway (U.S. Route 101) section of Los Angeles Metrorail Contract C-311.Twin 6.67-m (22-ft.) diameter starter tunnels were to be conventionally mined through amixed alluvial and bedrock face consisting of silty sand, gravel, and weathered sandstone and siltstone of the Topanga Group. The contact between the alluvium and bedrock dipped toward the Crossover Excavation where the horizontal drilling and grouting operations were performed. The intent of this grouting program was to stabilize the mixed face to minimize ground loss and surface settlement, and to reduce groundwater inflow into the tunnel headings. Given the highly variable mixed face conditions, horizontal drilling up to 86 m (284 ft.) resulted in upward trending trajectories which likely followed the bedrock contact. Chemical grouting was performed in a primary, secondary and tertiary, three dimensional sequence. Evaluation of the primary and secondary grouting parameters indicated where tertiary grouting was required. Grouting pressures induced a small rock failure at the tunnel heading as well as increased stresses on the tiebacks of the excavation.

This is the fourth annual tabulation that gives mineral royalty information. The table presents previous information plus about two dozen new entries. In addition to the royalty information, some entries show the cost of purchased reserves. Last year's tabulation appeared in two issues, to accommodate all of the information. This year the format has been changed slightly so the table can be printed in one issue. This year's table presents the commodities in the same sequence as last year. Sand and gravel information appears first, followed by: crushed stone for aggregate; other stone; industrial sand; other industrial minerals; energy minerals (coal, oil shale, uranium); and finally metals. As always, a caveat relates to factors that influence the reserve values. The data should serve only as a general reference. The table is not intended to present an absolute scale of reserve costs. Several factors influence the value of mineral commodities. These factors include: • location and transportation costs (especially significant for most industrial minerals); • market conditions for both the commodity and the company acquiring the right to mine it; • quality or grade of the deposit as it reflects the amount of processing and beneficiation necessary to produce the finished product; • and legislative restrictions and conditions for mining a given material at a given site. These and other factors will influence reserve costs of reserves. The table shows the range of royalties and the variations in the basis of computing the fees. In a few instances, it gives the cost of acquired reserves based on purchase price and quantitative estimates of the material in place. The table lists the commodity; the location (either by state, US geographic area, or Canadian province); the cost (R for royalty and P for purchased cost); and the year in which the lease or purchase agreement occurred. The last column offers either comments or gives a footnote number for more information. The cost column requires more explanation. The units may refer to cubic yards (/yd), cubic feet (/cuft), tons (/T) (2000 lbs) or acres (/A). 1 cu yd = 0.76m3 1 cu ft =0.28m3 1st = 0.9 t7 1 acre = 0.40 ha or m2 In several cases the royalty is a percentage of the finished products, sale price and is levied against either the amount produced or the amount sold. In its April 1991 issue, MINING ENGINEERING published a salary survey form asking for information relating to engineering and management jobs in the minerals industry. 1038 of these forms were filled out and returned, most of them being received in the magazine's offices at SME headquarters before the end of June 1991. An SME volunteer took on the task of tabulating and analyzing data from the forms, but the press of other business interfered with this work, and publication has been delayed until this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Appreciation is extended to SME members who took the time to fill out and return the salary survey forms, and our apologies go to MINING ENGINEERING'S readers for the delay in publication. Of the total number of forms received, more than 97% were from SME members. The geographic distribution of the respondents closely mirrored that of SME membership as a whole, about 50% being from the Society's Western Region, 19% from the Central Region, and 23% from the Eastern Region. About 8% were from outside the US. Average salaries for each of the four geographic areas ranged between $55,000 and $60,000, with the highest average in Eastern Region (Fig. 1). Respondents were asked to answer a number of questions formulated to determine if there are significant differences in salaries based on the type of organization for which they work. As indicated by Table 1, salary averages at mining companies do not vary markedly with the size of the company: • Large companies, defined as those having more than $1 billion in annual sales, accounted for just over 16% of the returns. Their average salary was $61,840 per year.

The Belle Eldridge Mine is an inactive lead-zinc mine in Spruce Gulch south of Deadwood, South Dakota. Acidic mine drainage (AMD) produced at the site drains into Spruce Creek, a tributary of Whitewood Creek. The site is on U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property. Extensive fieldwork was done at the Belle Eldridge Mine through the cooperation of the BLM and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The site was extensively mapped to identify physical and environmental hazards such as tailings, waste rock, collapsed buildings, adits and workings. An exhaustive search of the historical records of the Belle Eldridge Mine was conducted. Maps of the under-ground workings of the Belle Eldridge dating from the 1930’s and 1940’s were found. The maps were used to correlate currently collapsed features to old adits and tunnels. Using hand corers and a portable drill rig, waste rock, tailings and soil core samples were collected and depth to bedrock was determined and the total volume of waste and tailings pile were determined. Related work examined the hydrology of the site. The site is very complex hydrogeologically. Numerous underground and surface workings and tunnels add to the complexity. Several seeps are located at the site, one of which is producing AMD. Recharge to the site was studied, and a 100-year flood plain map was produced.

The publication of the Lerchs Grossmann paper in 1965 outlining a threedimensional graph algorithm for ultimate pit definition set the standard for the mining industry regarding pit optimization. Although the algorithm provides a solution from a static standpoint (i.e., assumes instantaneous mining), it is widely used for commercial packages to generate ultimate pit limits and intermediate phases. However, the solutions delivered are presented in canned reports lacking connection to the original data, which prevents further data analysis and extended reporting. The approach presented in this paper attempts to overcome such barriers by performing openpit optimization through databases. An adaptation of the Lerchs Grossmann graph algorithm is used to generate nodes, arcs and tree structures in customized tables to determine the maximum closure of a graph.

As the mining industry watches commodity prices continue to soar, the question on most everyone’s mind is how long will this upcycle last. The con-census among speakers and attendees at the SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit is that this cycle is sustainable. The buzz at the meeting was, of course, the current boom cycle the industry is in. Most agree that China’s huge appetite for mineral commodities is part of the force driving the upturn. But the improving economies of other developing nations also plays a role. However, along with the good times come challenges. Speakers at the keynote session addressed some of the challenges and offered their opinions on the sustainability of the boom.

The objective was to determine operating protocols for a lead and silver column flotation cleaner, being considered for installation at Sunshine Mining & Refining Co.’s Kellogg mill in Northern Idaho. In this column, tetrahedrite and galena were floated, and pyrite and other gangue minerals, including siderite and silica, were depressed. The procedure was to develop a dynamic simulation using a linear transfer function approach. The transfer function related cause and effect variables such as the influence of collector and depressant dosages on recovery and grades. Bench-scale flotation tests followed by pilot column testing provided the data used to develop a linear transfer function. The transfer function was derived using a spreadsheet. This model was applied to simulate how the flotation column could be made to respond to disturbances in feedgrade. The results were that xanthate, zinc sulfate, and sodium cyanide were found to be suitable controls for grade and recovery. Simulations showed the best sequence of manipulations of these reagents, and these sequences were useful for future operator training. The conclusion was that linear transfer functions were able to simulate lead and silver recovery, develop scenarios for operator training, and provide a foundation for future on-line control.

A site characterization strategy formulated for the probabilistic design of underground structures is presented, which takes into account the variability of rock properties and the stochastic nature of the rock failure process. It entails determining probability distributions of rock properties by utilizing the theory of extremes and Monte Carlo simulation. Laboratory and field test data are analyzed and presented to illustrate the methodology. The results indicate that the distributive characteristics of rock mass properties can be estimated using empirical relationships currently available. This results of analyses can be incorporated into the design of underground structures, and then, the relative uncertainties of the failure probability of the structures can be assessed.

The mining industry has waited a long time for the resurgence in commodity prices and demand for its products that it is now experiencing. Base and precious metals prices have reached levels not seen before. Coal prices have also shot up. And there are encouraging signs in the uranium market. China’s nearly out-of-control economic growth is said to be the leading driver for much of this resurgence. But demand for energy, metals and building materials in the United States and elsewhere are also major factors. The result is that expansions and new mines for nearly every commodity are in the works.

In its, effort to combat waterlogging and coil salinity, the later and Soils Investigation Division of WAPDA (West Pakistan's Water and Power Development Authority) has carried out an extensive program of test drilling and water sampling, since 1954. Data collected during the past ten years have permitted the delineation of fresh and saline ground-water-zones in the Punjab Plain. Fresh ground water containing generally, less than 500 ppm (parts per million) of total dissolved solids is found in wide belts paralleling the major rivers and in other areas of fresh-water recharge. Locally, fresh ground water extends to depths of 1,500 feet and more. Saline ground water occurs downgradient from sources of recharge, particularly in the lower central parts of the interfluvial areas and, presumably, underlies most of the Punjab Plain. The ground waters of the Punjab are characterized by their evolution from calcium, magnesium bicarbonate waters, near sources of recharge, to waters containing a dominant proportion of sodium. The highly mineralized waters of the Punjab are generally of the sodium chloride type, whereas in Dera Ismail Khan District sodium sulfate waters predominate. The pattern of distribution of saline ground-water zones and the observed gradual increase in mineral content, downgradient from sources of recharge, can be explained best by a hypothesis stressing the processes of evaporation from the water table and solution of minerals within the alluvial aquifer.

G. Campbell The paper by M. Lonoff looks at the importance of byproduct prices on copper production. The paper develops several interesting points on this topic, but there are some points in the theoretical discussion that could use further development. A couple of these theoretical topics will be considered here using the paper's framework of assumptions without concern about how realistic the assumptions are for the copper industry. Lonoff's theoretical model is based on a static, homogenous world where all copper/byproduct deposits are identical, and these deposits are the main source of these metals. Due to the importance of the byproducts to the production decision, the term coproducts will be substituted for the term byproducts to reflect more accurately this condition. The conclusion is drawn that a rise in coproduct prices necessitates a decrease in copper prices because copper production is increased as a consequence of increased coproduct production. The observation that real world behavior does not always follow this pattern is dismissed as "speculation." However, it can be easily shown that within this simple framework market forces might create the observed behavior. The key question to be answered is what causes coproduct prices to rise. Three possible cases will be used as illustrations. The first case is the one implicity assumed by Lonoff. Here, the demand for coproducts increases at all prices (an outward parallel shift of the demand curve) with the demand for copper remaining constant. As reported in the paper, the results are higher coproduct prices, an increase in coproduct production, and lower copper prices due to the resulting increase in copper production. The second case is when the supply of coproducts are constrained-leading to higher market prices. Copper production, as required by the simple model, is also reduced which Reply by M. Lonoff Campbell's comments give me an opportunity to clarify a few points in "Copper and Its Byproducts." That paper examined the affect of byproducts on the copper market and considered the relative riskiness of multi-metal deposits from an investment standpoint. That brief note made no attempt to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, Campbell's comments miss the point of the paper and necessitate a response. My "theoretical model" was static and I freely conceded after introducing the assumption of identical deposits that "none of the assumptions hold." These simplifying assumptions allowed me to bound the possible effects of higher byproduct prices on the copper price by assuming identical deposits and computing average price effects. I took great pains to subsequently explain that since deposits are not identical the identity of the marginal deposit might change due to byproduct price changes. In this case, average price affects will overstate the affect of byproducts on copper prices. According to Campbell, I dismiss as speculation any "real world behavior that does not always follow this pattern" (of metals prices moving in opposite directions). In the byproducts paper I noted that gold, copper, and silver price movements often parallel each other on an intra-day or day-to-day basis. Such movements are largely due to market anticipation of or reaction to changes in interest rates that affect carrying costs of metals stocks. Other movements may be due to anticipated changes in available supply or physical requirements. I loosely grouped these effects as speculative. To distinguish this statement from the main thrust of the paper, I contined "In the long run if gold and silver prices remain high the equilibrium copper price will be lower." The paper set out long run equilibrium conditions rather than attempting to explain price movements on a daily basis or on a year-to-year basis.

The utilization of high sulfur Illinois coal by utility plants has been decreasing since the enactment of 1990 Clean Coal Air Act Amendment. Illinois coal producers can make their coal saleable by offering the choice of taking the combustion by-products from the utility plants and placing them in the abandoned sections of their mines. To be competitive, however, coal producers need to select an environmentally acceptable transportation-handling-placement system through which the cost-per-ton of by-product disposed can be minimized. In this paper, a few such systems are presented. The favorable operating range of each system is determined in terms of distance and tonnage. A case study is given whereby cost analysis is conducted for an underground coal mine receiving by-products from two Illinois utility plants.

The number of extended cut mining systems has increased significantly in coal mines over the last decade, and there is a constant push to extend the face ventilation systems to even greater setback distances. The need to maintain airflow at setback distances of 12.2 m (40 ft) and beyond requires that methods for delivering intake air to the face be improved, or alternative ventilation techniques be implemented. The emphasis of this research effort was to examine various techniques to improve the distribution of available air at the mining face in order to reduce face methane levels. A study was conducted comparing the performance of a jet fan, used in conjunction with a machine mounted scrubber, with blowing curtain ventilation in a 27.5 m (90 ft) heading. In addition, a second study was performed on blowing curtain systems examining how scrubber flow, intake air velocity, and curtain setback influence face methane concentrations. Results showed that when the heading advances to a depth of 27.5 m (90 ft) blowing curtain systems were more efficient at diluting face methane levels when compared to a jet fan. Also, increases in scrubber flows and curtain velocity resulted in lower face methane concentrations for blowing curtain systems at 9.2 and 15.2 m (30 and 50 ft) setbacks.

Introduction Some uranium minerals are paramagnetic and hence are amenable to concentration by high gradient magnetic separation (HGMS). This paper describes effects of the HGMS parameters-pulp velocity, field strength, matrix loading, and magnetic field gradient-on the product recovery and grade. Unsatisfactory separation of uranium minerals by HGMS is related to ore-specific properties, such as lack of liberation, fine dissemination of uranium minerals, uniform distribution of magnetic minerals throughout the ore matrix, and interference of fine-sized slimes. Experimental techniques to identify and resolve some of these problems are outlined. HGMS of Uranium Ores The mechanism by which uranium minerals are attracted to a magnetic field is either due to its magnetic susceptibility or its association with other minerals that are magnetic. Data on magnetic susceptibility of uranium minerals are scarce. The only reported data are for uraninite at 2360 X 10-6 cm3/mole. Povarennykh (Andres, 1976) concluded that the magnetic properties of minerals depend on: • Structure of the outer electron shell in a mineral with electropositive atoms; • Valence of the atoms; • State of the chemical bonds; • Type of coordination; and • Proportion of magnetic atoms (Fe, Mn, Cr, and Ni) in the composition of the mineral. However, information on the magnetic susceptibilities of the constituent atoms of a mineral alone does not suffice for evaluating the mineral compound as a whole. Most often, uranium minerals can be beneficiated by HGMS if they are associated with other minerals that are magnetic. This appears to be a more predominant mechanism by which the uranium minerals are beneficiated. Experimental A Sala-HGMS (Malghan and Subramanian, 1981), model 10-15-20, separator was used in the experiments. The matrix material-ferromagnetic stainless steel in the form of expanded metal or steel wool-was packed into a 38-mm (1.5-in.) diameter by 360-mm (14-in.) long canister. The matrix material occupied only a 150-mm (6-in.) length. The experimental set-up and slurry flow direction are described elsewhere (lannicelli, 1976). The response of uranium ores in the HGMS was studied by feeding well-dispersed slurry at 10% solids and examining the influence of process variables on selectivity and overall uranium recovery. The chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the ores under study are presented in Table 1.

Primary economical deposits of rare-earth elements (REEs) are exhausting all over the world, and it has become necessary to find new sources and methods for their extraction. In addition, increasing the application of REEs in modern technological society has increased its demand globally. One of the important movements to compensate for the future shortages of critical metals is the recovery of REEs from recyclable materials. This paper presents a review of the classification and extraction methods, as well as general applications of REEs with emphasis on secondary sources such as coal and coal byproducts, iron ore tailings, apatite, and phosphate byproducts. An overview of the current state of knowledge on the various methods of REE beneficiation and extraction is covered. These methods include physical separation, as well as hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these REE extraction techniques for enhanced recovery has been driven primarily by the unique industrial application of these important elements. This paper further explores the existing and potential environmental challenges associated with REE extraction. The authors have presented a wide array of literature, in-depth discussion of the subject, and a succinct summary of processes and relevant case studies.

This paper will review several projects completed during the period from 1976 through 1984 which have been carried out utilizing big hole drilling concepts. The projects discussed will be from various industries to demonstrate the extent that big hole drilling methods are being used along with the current state of development. There will be a discussion of projects planned for the future where big hole drilling methods are the only technology being considered. Also included in the discussions will be an overview of the most recently completed heavy oil recovery project. During the next decade, big hole drilling methods will be used more and more in all industries where underground access is required. The safety, speed and economics associated with shaft sinking using drilling methods are becoming more and more recognized and the technology is rapidly becoming an accepted shaft sinking method.

Introduction A resource of more than 122 Gt (134 billion st) of minable trona and mixed trona and halite underlies an area of about 3400 km2 (1300 sq miles) west of Green River, WY (Culbertson, in preparation) (Fig. 1). In 1982, the total domestic consumption of soda ash (refined trona) was 6 Mt (6.7 million st) (Kostick, 1983). About 90% of this came from Wyoming trona. This enormous deposit occurs in the Wilkins Peak Member of the Green River Formation that is of Eocene age. This formation is derived from sediments deposited in a large lake named Gosiute. Lake Gosiute occupied the Green River Basin in southwestern Wyoming some 38 to 54 million years ago. The Wilkins Peak Member represents a restricted, evaporite-rich cycle of deposition when the trona deposits were formed. A total of 42 trona beds are known. Of these, 25 are of sufficient thickness and extent to be considered minable (Culbertson, in preparation). The production of sodium compounds from the trona deposits in the Wilkins Peak Member began in 1896 when wells were drilled within the present boundaries of the town of Green River. The purpose of the drilling was for extraction of sodium carbonate brines. Sodium carbonate (sal soda) was removed from these brines at a plant in Green River. Bedded trona was discovered in 1938 in a core from an oil well drilled south of Westvaco. In 1947, the underground mining of trona began. Production has continued from 1948 to date. Currently, five companies are mining trona and producing soda ash from the Wilkins Peak Member in Wyoming. Additionally, Allied Chemical Co. mines and processes trona for Church and Dwight's sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) operation in Green River. Competition in the soda ash industry depends primarily on the efficiency of mining and refining, allowing for lower-cost production. Newer plants and mine designs should increase efficiency. Solution mining holds promise as an even lower-cost method of mining. Employment in the soda ash industry is declining since the newer mining and refining methods are less labor intensive. Declines in employment, however, may be offset as production increases. Due to the large resource, the availability of minable trona should not be a problem for perhaps hundreds of years. Introduction During the past 10 years, energy costs in mining have risen from about 4% to as much as 25% of total production cost. When combined with declining ore grades, these costs exert inordinate stress on mine productivity. Industrial engineering techniques have traditionally been aimed at improving manufacturing facilities productivity, but they have been applied to mining as pressure for productivity improvement has increased. These techniques can perform four useful functions for mining operations by improving methods, equipment selection procedures, energy use through scheduling, and managing energy costs rather than being managed by them. This article discusses some of the standard techniques for productivity improvement, and how they can be adapted to perform these four functions. Pre-Production The best time to seek high productivity is when a mine is being planned. During pre-production, when most options are still open, an optimum mine design is achievable. At this time, major equipment selections are made, the layout, material handling systems, and processes are designed, and critical energy source decisions are made. By including explicit energy cost projections, decisions can be made that will save significant amounts of money per ton of ore over the life of the mine. Attention can also be given to often overlooked details such as lighting. Some of the same tools used in new mine planning are applicable to productivity improvements at an existing plant. These tools are the charting and modeling methods that have been developed by industrial engineers over the past 75 years. Energy Consumption Before any analysis of energy consumption can be performed, preliminary work is necessary to find the kind of energy used, how much it costs the plant, and when electrical peaks occur. Past bills should be examined to determine the monthly consumption rate and the cost of each energy type. These data should be adjusted to remove effects caused by production fluctuations or weather. Knowing when electrical peak demands occur is necessary because these determine either the electrical capacity needed or the amount that must be bought. At $500-$800 per kW for construction or $5-$15 per kW per month for purchase, they represent a significant cost. By the time these data are collected, planners should be aware of the importance of energy in the total cost of mine operation, and should have the most crucial time data for electrical peak demand. Flow Process Chart Reducing costs can be accomplished by a thorough look at mine systems and how altering one system causes changes in others. By developing and exercising models of production processes outward to the transportation of the final product, otherwise obscured weaknesses may become apparent. There are tools available for analyzing the mine and its associated systems; one of the most useful is the flow process chart. The flow process chart gives a system analysis of a production procedure by classifying all actions into one of five types: operations, inspections, transportation, delays without paperwork, and delays with paperwork. Operation: In an operation, the nature of something is changed. Examples are blasting, washing coal, and processing matter. Denoted by 0. Inspection: Examining an object for identification or to measure some attribute. Examples are determining whether a drill hole is deep enough, deciding how far to cut under an unsupported roof when operating a continuous miner, or checking the lubricant level on a truck. Denoted bye. Transportation: Moving an object from one place to another. Examples are transporting overburden, moving coal on a conveyor belt, and pumping water. Denoted by =>. Delay without paperwork: A delay that is an inherent part of the system. Examples include idle time of a continuous miner while waiting for shuttle cars or for roof bolting, crushed ore in a storage area waiting for grinding and flotation, and people from one craft waiting for another craft to finish. Denoted by D. Delay with paperwork: A delay that can be terminated only by some written authorization. Examples are coal that cannot be removed until authorized by a bill of sale and transportation orders, personnel records, maintenance, or spare parts. Denoted by V. In practice, the flow process chart is completed after data collection and a detailed examination of the process. Data collection is needed to answer questions on distance, quantity, and time for each of the operations. As the analysis is being performed, each step of the process is subjected to these questions: • Why is the step necessary? • What is being moved? • When does the step take place, and why?

Part I describes the general geology of the Florida deposits. As the lucrative Bone Valley Formation is depleted, replacement production will move progressively into areas of total Hawthorn production. The reserves of the immediate future are a mixture of two distinct ore types referred to as the upper (high grade) zone and the lower (low grade) zone. The upper zone is somewhat similar to the Bone Valley Formation that has been Florida's source of production for the past 100 years and will respond favorably to present beneficiation practices. By contrast, the lower zone ore contains significant quantities of dolomite that must be removed in order to produce an acceptable grade pebble or flotation sized product. Part II reviews past practice and describes future trends in mining and ore transportation. This presentation (Part III) is confined to the problems of beneficiation, waste disposal, and environmental regulation.
