A relatively inexpensive and reliable method of using liquid phase tracers to aid in the solution of material balance problems is introduced. The method is of value in situations where one is required to calculate a material balance around a process that has the operating appearance of a "blender" or "splitter" with respect to the available slurry sample data. The paper briefly reviews material balance development and tracer applications in mineral processing, introduces the problem to he addressed, and provides both theoretical and industrial evidence establishing the potential of the method.

The Toyoha Mine is operated under extremely high rock temperature. The geothermal heat is 10 to 20 times more active than the average of the Japanese Islands. The highest temperature ever observed in exploration drill holes is 242°C that must be equivalent to those of the geothermal fluids utilized for power generation in Japan. In order to improve the underground climate, the mine has a plan to introduce paste backfilling and to effectively reduce the heat flows from the mined out stopes. The surface flow test was carried and the second test is being arranged in underground.

The four unit Cholla coal fired power station at Joseph City, Arizona, consumes coal from the McKinley mine located in western New Mexico. Since coals may contain relatively high uranium or thorium concentrations and may release quantities of detrimental progeny of these elements to the environs, there is concern that releases may pose an adverse environmental impact or even a health hazard to the workers. Thus, an effort was made to quantify the radionuclide content of the coal and compare the results with radionuclide concentrations already present in the vicinity of the plant. Additionally an attempt was made to assess any potential for significant enhancement of the levels of radioactivity in the environment or to plant personnel. Background gamma radiation measurements at and near the plant ranged from 8 to 12 [µ]R/hr (70 to 105 mR/yr) with a few localized anomolies measuring to 18 [u]R/hr (160 mR/yr). Levels on top of the coal storage piles decreased to ~ 6.5 [u]R/hr (60 mR/yr). Apparently the direct radiation emitted from the coal is less than the background levels in the vicinity of the plant. Measurements performed on top of several coal seams at the mine confirmed low radiation levels emanating from coal, but readings more than doubled when the overburden was monitored. Laboratory gamma spectrometry confirmed the lower amounts of natural radioactivity in the coal when compared against soil and water samples obtained in the vicinity of the plant and the overburden at the mine. In an effort to see if there is biological enhancement, animal feces was sampled. The radiation variations were found to be influenced primarily by naturally occurring potassium-40 which varied from ~ 1 to 18 pCi/gm rather than fluctuations in the uranium and thorium series. The potassium-40 concentrated in the ash were similar to the concentrations in the environs around the disposal ponds while Radium-226 concentrated in the fly ash was ~ 3 times that found in the immediate surroundings. Radon-222 gas concentrations in buildings at or near the plant ranged from 0.5 to 1.8 pCi/l and were generally lower than indoor concentrations measured in the Phoenix area. The burning of coal at the Cholla station does not appear to increase ambient levels of radioactivity found in the surrounding environs or to the workers. However, the use of byproduct fly ash for construction purposes may need to be examined.

With more stringent environmental and economic constraints being placed on mining operations, it has become necessary to optimize each process to minimize energy and raw material consumption and reduce waste discharge. In most cases, detailed process analysis is required to detect inefficiencies and provide alternative solutions for process improvement. HETSIM, a microcomputer process modeling and simulation system, is routinely used to analyze communition, hydrometallurgical, pyrometallurgical, and coal preparation processes. The process modeling techniques used in METSIM, including process control simulation, will be presented and illustrated using actual plant processes.

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores, such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Flotation of metal sulfide ores has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for more than 50 years. It is the relative technical/economic ease of floating metal sulfide minerals that has been a major driving force behind the rapid expansion in the supply/demand of metals over this 50 year period. It is estimated that 1.6 billion tons of feed sulfide ores are processed each year in the free world based on the froth flotation process, Klimpel (1987) and the manufacture/use of associated chemical reagents is a major portion of the 1.5 billion dollars (U.S.) free world mining chemicals business, Klimpel (1988b). The use of froth flotation appears to be increasing partially due to the ever decreasing feed grades and liberation sizes of the feed minerals. Froth flotation has shown itself to be a flexible process that lends itself well to many solid/solid separations. Thus, with surprisingly little equipment modification, separations can involve very different particle sizes and densities, and relative weight ratios of materials to be separated. In addition, the flotation process is economic, especially when compared to size reduction, its associated precursor process. Flotation also lends itself to continuous operations with a variety of equipment configurations. Such operations exhibit an ability to vary feed rate of solid to the process by as much as 50% without a total collapse of separating efficiency. In addition, the widely used mechanical flotation cell is scalable from 2.8 to 57 or 85 m3 (100 to 2000 or 3000 cu ft) with surprising ease relative to other unit engineering operations over the same relative size increase. The separating medium used is water. Most of the chemicals required -- pH regulators, frothers, collectors, activators, and depressants -- are all relatively inexpensive and common. They are not usually used in large quantities. While there has been a tendency for the quality of metal sulfide ores in any one geographic location to deteriorate over time due to mining intensity, the overall global supply of sulfide minerals is still very ample. Thus, the physical supply side of sulfide ore concentrates has not been under strong technology improvement pressure with increasing metal demands. Part of this is due to the ability of capital to consistently move to new geographic sources having suitable-grade sulfide ores. In these moves, the actual froth flotation technology used (including collector chemicals) has had to change little. As an illustration of this trend, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of thio collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 987 were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. This is clearly not typical of reagent development in other process-related industries. In addition, the industrial-scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully on an industrial scale for many years. Thus the industrial process of froth flotation, especially as applied to the recovery of sulfide minerals, poses a dilemma: such a process is widely used, economic, versatile, forgiving, etc. and yet is still not very well understood in a mechanistic sense leading to prediction of results from fundamentals even after 50 years of usage. This paper is not written to "break new ground" in computer applications; it is just a treatment of how an operating metal mine utilizes a mainframe computer for planning, analyzing, and reporting on the ventilation and cooling systems. The Unisys mainframe computer at the mine site is used in programs that analyze the ventilation network, keep records on various ventilation installations, calculate the results of measurements and produce reports on ventilation conditions in the working places and on the main air distribution, and plan and analyze the cooling system. All the programs are interactive to terminals. There are a series of data files that are generated by some programs which may be used by other programs. Most of these programs have been developed in-house. The computer is also used as a word processor via a vendor-supplied text editing program to produce memos, letters, and to keep up-to-date lists of equipment used.

The Manapouri Power Station, commisioned in 1969, is located in Fiordland National Park in the South Island of New Zealand. It is the country’s largest hydro power scheme and can generate 700MW of electricity. The power station utilizes the hydraulic head of Lake Manapouri, using an underground power station and a 10 km-long tailrace tunnel was constructed by drill-and-blast to allow discharge to Doubtful Sound. Power generation fell short of expectations due to higher than expected friction in the tailrace system. To remedy this a second tailrace tunnel was constructed between June 1998and May 2002. It consisted of a 10 m diameter, 10 km long tunnel in predominately gneissic rock and was excavated using an Atlas Copco Robbins TBM. High water inflows, Owner/Contractor production incentives and a major claim settlement were handled during the 5 1/4 year project. This paper discusses TBM advance rates, utilization factors that increased in the second half of the project plus an innovative method for sealing Tunnel 1 to construct the bifurcation.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. Department of Transportation has underway an important new program which will have a major impact on rapid excavation technology. The Transportation Tunneling Program, as it is called, is a coordinated, multi-modal research and development effort. Its goals, if realized, will significantly improve our ability to build the underground structures needed for transportation. This, in turn, will improve transport efficiency, environmental impact, and the energy consumption associated with the movement of people and goods. Tunneling technology research and development had its beginning at the Department of Transportation in the Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT). The OHSGT developed and implemented a program in 1965 to provide the technology for underground construction needed to support future high speed ground transportation. In 1967, when the OHSGT was transferred from the Department of Commerce to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the program accompanied that office. The thrust of the FRA program has been cost reduction through the development of new materials, innovative designs, and better construction methods. The Virginia Operations of Consolidation Coal Co. include a diversity of mine fan configurations which have been tested to quantify pressure losses through the inlet ductwork. Airflow and pressure measurements were taken at four shaft sites to calculate losses for the 90-degree bend at the top of the shaft and the self-closing dampers or closing doors located between the shaft and fan. Velocity contours were then developed from the test data to determine flow patterns in each fan system component. In addition, yaw and pitch angles of airflow through the fan annulus were measured to evaluate turbulence levels created by various inlet ductwork designs. The test results indicate that proper design of the shaft collar and ductwork arrangement for main mine fans can substantially reduce system pressure losses and air turbulence. BY minimizing the pressure drop experienced on the surface, these design improvements enable the bulk of the total pressure developed by the fan(s) to be utilized in the mine.

The operations of Bethlehem Copper are situated in the south-central interior of British Colombia at an elevation of 4900 feet above sea level. Main road and rail transportation systems pass through Ashcroft in the Thompson Valley, which is 28 miles by road from the minesite. The operation was the first low-grade open-pit porphyry copper mine in British Colombia. The minerals are chiefly chalcopyrite and bornite, while the rock is principally feldspar and quartz. In the outer fringes of the orebodies sane pyrite is present. Average grade of mill feed is 0.55% copper.

The results of an experimental study of polymer-induced flocculation of clay suspensions in continuous, stirred-tank reactors are presented. The effects of polymer dosage, mixing time and mixing intensity are shown to be generally similar to those observed for equivalent batch systems, but flocculation appears to be generally less effective in the continuous process. Settling rates are lower and supernatant turbidities are higher for the continuous system. It is postulated that non-equilibrium effects due to simultaneous polymer adsorption and floc growth can be exploited so as to enhance flocculation in batch systems. The nature of the continuous process, however, offers less opportunity for taking advantage of such effects. Conditions in a continuous flocculation system inherently lead to a closer approach to equilibrium.

Traditionally, the practical evaluation of a mining project for a potential investment has been made considering mainly technical aspects. But the concept of sustainable development has introduced significant changes in the factors analyzed to make the final decision. This paper proposes an empirical evaluation of a project considering not only technical, economic and financial parameters, but also associated risks and other intangible aspects, such as political considerations, stability in the legal frame, social factors and environmental issues. The proposed methodology is practical and easy to apply for project management. Among its main advantages, the following could be quoted: using this evaluation two different projects or locations of a same project can be compared, future behaviors could be predicted, the index incorporates a new approach to specific mining projects and this perspective could also be applied to other projects with environmental and social impact, such as civil works or industrial projects.

Sedimentation in highly, flocculated suspensions of fine particles, such as clays, occurs through individual settling units (flocs) that have very open structures and correspondingly low densities (typically less than 5% solids by volume). Such settling processes rapidly lead to the buildup of a bed of flocs that are essentially close-packed, with an inter-floc porosity of perhaps 50%. However, the overall solids content is no more than about 2% to 3% by volume. Consequently, the thickening process is dominated by the bed consolidation rather than by the simple settling of the individual flocs. Experimental measurements of sediment consolidation in flocculated clay suspensions indicate, for a given system, that consolidation rates are essentially determined by the solids concentration and can be evaluated using the classical Kynch treatment. However, these rates are strongly dependent on the physical, as well as the chemical, conditions of the flocculation process. Furthermore, the extent to which gravity consolidation proceeds depends on the total weight of the sediment (i.e., on the bed height and the solids concentration). The implications with respect to thickener operation and the requirements for the laboratory testing for thickener design are discussed.

Some attempts were made to recover and remove heavy metal elements, such as uranium, copper and chromium, from aqueous systems by using several phosphate compounds. The phosphorylated derivatives of polysaccharides, chitin phosphate, chitosan phosphate and cellulose phosphate, have high abilities to accumulate heavy metals, such as uranium, copper, manganese, cobalt, cadmium, zinc, nickel and chromium, compared with non-phosphorylated polysaccharides. In order to obtain basic information on the recovery and removal of uranium that may be present in industrial effluents, mine waste water and seawater, the adsorption of uranium by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was investigated in details. The adsorption of uranium by chitin phosphate and chitosan phosphate was much greater than copper, cadmium, manganese, zinc, cobalt, nickel, magnesium and calcium. The adsorption of uranium was very rapid and was affected by pH of the solution, temperature. granule radius and co-existence of carbonate ion. The amounts of uranium adsorbed on the adsorbents increased linearly as the external uranium concentration increased. Uranium adsorbed on chitin phosphate easily desorbed with diluted sodium carbonate solution. On the other hand, uranyl and cobalt ions were separated from each other by using chitin phosphate. Along with these fundamental research, some attempts were made to recover uranium from seawater.

With the current trends towards the concentration of extraction to fewer but higher production units in deeper seams, often of higher coal rank, the role of methane drainage ranges has become critical. As mines exploit seams at greater depth and more remote locations there has been a need to extend the lengths of methane drainage ranges and to increase the capacity of the surface pumps. This trend has highlighted the need to effectively simulate the operation of a methane drainage range in order to produce the optimum design and operation of a safe and economic system. This paper describes the development of such an analytical tool. The application of this computer model is illustrated by the analysis of the operation of the drainage system of an extensive mine. The paper concludes by considering the development of a [Knowlege Based or Decision Support System] which will assist the ventilation engineer in assessing the current performance of an existing drainage range and will suggest possible remedial modifications or design strategies which may improve the system performance. INTRODUCTION In order to maintain the general body methane levels to below predetermined statutory threshold limit values (TLV's) on major longwall production units there are, for a given production rate, two major complementary control devices which may be employed by the ventilation engineer. These are the combined design and application of a competent mine ventilation and methane drainage system. The methane drainage system should be designed so as to maximise the capture of the methane (firedamp) from the seam being mined and the strata gas liberated in the vicinity of the extraction zone from gas bearing seams or other reservoirs of gas situated at above or below the mining horizon. The design fresh air quantity entering the face should ensure that under normal operating conditions the methane entering in the vicinity of the face is rapidly dispersed and dilute to well below statutory TLV's. The drainage system must therefore be designed to maximise the capture of the methane gas liberated to minimise the amount of gas which enters the ventilation airstream. GAS DRAINAGE The inherent dangers of methane emissions in mine workings have been a problem of concern to mining engineers for many years. To alleviate the risk, methane drainage has been employed for some years to capture the gas before it becomes a hazard to the operation of the mine. The method of drainage employed will be dependent on a number of factors which include the longwall mining method and production cycle employed, the characteristics of the coal seam being extracted and those of the adjacent gas bearing strata. In 1961 Lerchs and Grossman presented a method, based on graph theory, to determine the optimum ultimate pit limits for an open-cast mine. At the same time they demonstrated a dynamic programming algorithm for the optimum pit limits for a two-dimensional open-cast mine. Since then many methods for determining optimum limits for three-dimensional mines have been programed, and even more have been reported in the literature. The methods include computer "simulation" of the manual methods used by engineers, the development of sets of conic sections and fitting to exclude overlap, integer linear programming (and its equivalent network flow model), and dynamic programming. Many of the methods do not guarantee optimal solutions but seem to satisfy the user. Other reported methods have never been applied, partly because they did not yield optimal solutions. We have developed a three-dimensional dynamic programming algorithm which requires a single pass through the data. Large problems can be solved on a small computer because only a small part of the data is required at any time. In this paper we will review the state of the art and to demonstrate the connection between linear programming (and network flow) models and the dynamic programming method.

In general, process control systems in solid-solid separation have not evolved to the same level as in flotation circuit control. Perhaps one of the more significant contributing factors in this regard is the lack of suitable on-line analytical instrumentation. In spite of the obstacles, some interesting work has been done. This paper presents a review of current industrial control strategies in ore sorting, dense media separation, gravity separation and electrical and magnetic separation.

Tungsten-containing ores are mined on all continents of the world. China is the world's largest producer and controls the world's largest reserves. The USSR, itself a sizeable producer, is estimated to be the world's largest consumer. The major use for tungsten in the noncommunist world is in production of cemented tungsten carbides for cutting, drilling, and wear parts. Other major uses include lamp wires, steels for tools, and armaments. Real tungsten prices have been in a general decline since 1977-1979 as the tungsten market undergoes basic and lasting structural changes.

"At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."
