Recovery of galena and sphalerite from fine grained lead-zinc ores by flotation normally requires re-grinding to achieve economic recoveries at acceptable concentrate grades. Re-grinding aims to reduce the coarse valuable mineral particles to a size where they float more readily and to liberate the composite valuable particles so that the gangue in these composites does not dilute the concentrate. Besides changing particle size and liberation, re-grinding changes the surfaces of the minerals and thus may alter the rate that mineral particles of a given size and liberation float. A method was developed to apportion the total change in recovery after re-grinding between changes in size and liberation and changes in flotation rates. The flotation behaviour of minerals, before and after re-grinding, was measured by floating samples of plant streams under controlled conditions in a laboratory cell. Results from several industrial lead-zinc circuits indicated that the change in behaviour observed fell into three different categories. It is concluded that the method will indicate whether the focus for optimization of existing plant should be on comminution or flotation, and it will help determine the path for laboratory testing in designing new regrind circuits.

The effect of sample storage in argon and in air on the kinetics of oxidation of pyrite from a coal source was studied using accelerated-weathering tests that were performed in laboratory columns. Prior to the weathering tests, the samples were crushed, ground and stored for various periods of time in either argon or air. The test results showed a dramatic difference in the rate of oxidation of the aged samples. The interpretation of the differences was based on the hypothesis that the aging of pyrite led to the formation of surface coatings that changed with time. "Dry" oxidation produced surface coatings that had properties different from those produced by "wet" oxidation. The significance of these results to pyrite/reagent interactions during flotation and in evaluating the acid-mine-drainage potential of pyritic waste materials is discussed.

ABSTRACT A comprehensive program of air flush core and reverse circulation drilling, trial mining and beneficiation test work was carried out in 1980-1982 to re-assess the potential of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit. The results generally confirm previous work by Amax Corporation. The bauxite is a medium available alumina and reactive silica deposit which responds well to wet screen beneficiation. High grade pockets have developed locally, with the potential for refractory grade extraction. A major feasibility study of the Mitchell Plateau bauxite deposit was completed in 1983. Due to the unexpected severity of the downturn in the alumina market, development of the project has been deferred.

INTRODUCTION Although the mining method described in this chapter is locally designated "modified Mitchell," there are so many features which are characteristic of square sets that the designation "modified square set" would describe the method equally well. The method was developed as a result of local operating experience with various mining methods, observing operations in mines in the southwest where Mitchell stoping had been thoroughly developed, and an exhaustive study of min¬ing methods literature. Since 1941, modified Mitchell stopes have con¬tributed over 50% of the total stope production and were largely responsible for supporting production dur¬ing the war years and period of declining manpower and increasing costs. GEOLOGY The community of Gilman is situated on Battle Mountain at an elevation of 2743 m (9000 ft) in the Battle Mountain mining district, about 45 km (28 miles) by highway north of Leadville, CO. The sur¬rounding area, including the Mount of the Holy Cross and Eagle River Canyon, is noted for its beauty and recreational facilities, both summer and winter. Massive sulfide ore bodies of the limestone replace¬ment type occur as chimneys and mantas or as blankets in strata dipping 0.19 rad (11°) northeasterly. A chimney is shaped like an inverted cone with shale, quartzite, and porphyry caprocks forming its base. This relatively impervious capping apparently blocked rising ore constituents which formed the chimneys and mantas. At the apex or lower extremity of the chimneys, the ore follows small fractures and bedding planes in under¬lying quartzite. Dimensions of chimneys vary, ranging up to 61 m (200 ft) vertically and 76 m (250 ft) horizontally near capping. The manta or blanket ore bodies vary in vertical cross section from one hundred to several thousand feet. One such manta was developed from its outcrop to its chimney source approximately 610 m (2000 ft) downdip. Another manta of substantial cross section and length did not follow shale but extended updip with limestone capping from its source at a lower horizon. All chimneys, however, make up to the shale¬quartzite-porphyry capping. Chimney ore minerals are mainly pyrite and chalco¬pyrite with accessory copper and silver minerals, surrounded by, and in places overlain with, marmatite, pyrite, and galena. Manganosiderite extends into the ore. It may or may not be impregnated with sufficient marmatite and galena to be of commercial grade. Ore may be massive, coarsely crystalline, or sandy, some¬times rubbly. Generally speaking, chimney ore masses are incompetent and of variable grade. Caprock is heavy and caves readily. Manta ore minerals are mostly marmatite, pyrite, and galena associated with manganosiderite. Structural characteristics of the ore are similar to those found in chimneys and where the manta contact shale capping the ground is unusually heavy. However, the large manta with limestone capping mentioned previously consisted of a hard strong ore mass in fairly strong host rock. Commercial ore contacts are fairly regular in this manta but in others the ore waste contacts along the walls are irregular with shaly limestone pendants extend¬ing downward into the ore at capping. Dolomite sand is also quite frequently encountered along wall contacts and less frequently overhead. MINING METHODS Practically all stoping in the Gilman ore bodies has been carried on with timber and fill methods and the features which have been briefly described have dictated the choice. Although at the present time modified Mitchell and underhand square-set stopes account for the total production, considerable production has been obtained from alternate horizontal cut-and-fill stopes with Mitchell truss stopes in the pillars. This method was highly satisfactory in the hard manta ore body mentioned earlier and where ore excavations 11 m (35 ft) wide and 23 m (75 ft) long required no auxiliary timber support. Williams Mine was considering spending a large amount of capital to install a pumping system underground to rid the mine of slimes; with the introduction of Delvo Stabilizer this challenge would be met. This paper will address the process to introducing the Delvo Technology into the Cemented Roddill Program. Some areas that were worked on included: testing of the mix design, bet dosage rate for an economical solution, temperatures at different levels of the mine, the amount of time needed once the grout was put to sleep, preventing plugs in the delivery system A controlled dosage that gave the Operator a 12 hour window of flowable material was developed and an added feature to the introduction of Delvo was also noted; an increase in MPa strength over the design. Collectively with the help of operators at the batch plant and the underground miners involved with the program all concerns where addressed and all goals met. A cost effective program was implemented thus increasing productivity, preventing costly plugs, and improved the actual maintenance on the entire delivery system, which included the batch tanks, aggitator tanks, all pumps required in the system and of course reducing buildup of slimes at the cones.

Available literature on the effect of re-entrainment on overall airborne dust concentration in mine airways or the fundamental mechanisms of coal dust re-entrainment in mine atmosphere is scant (Shankar and Ramani, 1991). Therefore, as part of the Respirable Dust Center's ongoing research, the following three-part study was undertaken: •a study of the re-entrainment phenomena of anthracite and bituminous coal dust particles in a wind tunnel under the influence of varying air velocities; •a study of the same in the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the USBM with both air flow and walking by personnel causing re-entrainment; and •the mathematical modeling and computer simulation of the re-entrainment phenomenon. In this paper, results from the re-entrainment studies in the wind tunnel and the Lake Lynn Laboratory mine are presented. Comparing the results from the two studies, it was observed that increasing the air velocity increased the rate of re-entrainment (Shankar and Ramani, 1994a) and the rate of re-entrainment decreased with the time of exposure of the source dust to the flowing air. In addition, when the source dust was composed of particles of different sizes, the airborne dust concentrations due to re-entrainment were higher than when the source dust was composed of particles of the same size. The contribution of airborne dust concentration due to airflow was negligible compared to the contribution due to walking.

Because jackleg rock drills are a potential source of hand vibration exposure, they can effectively produce Hand Arm Vibration (HAV) Syndrome in their operators. This will affect operator efficiency and mine productivity. As a result, a significant amount of work has focused on redesigning rock drill handles using new materials to minimize hand-transmitted vibration. In previous work developed by the authors (1991), a detailed study was undertaken to determine the effectiveness of using elastomer covered handles in place of the standard steel design. The results indicated that, for an elastomer-based handle design, the overall acceleration level experienced by the hand can be reduced by as much as a factor of three, relative to the steel handle. It was also shown that this reduction takes place predominantly in the frequency range above 500 Hz. This paper presents an investigation of the long-term effectiveness of an elastomer-cushioned handle under different conditions underground. In this study, sponsored by the Mining Industry Research Organization of Canada (MIROC), a number of cushioned handles were quantitatively and qualitatively tested in five operating mines. The vibration testing program has indicated that the cushioned handle can reduce overall vibration levels by as much as a factor of three. The qualitative assessment program of the cushioned handles by the drill operators has indicated some degree of preference for the cushioned handles over the steel handles, if certain design modifications are performed. This research program indicated that cushioned handles have the potential to become the dominant method with regard to vibration reduction and operator performance.

In 1986, Gold Fields began negotiations with a large Nevada electrical power utility to supply power for its Chimney Creek mine in northern Nevada. After the long negotiations reached an impasse over various costs associated with the power line, a decision was made by Gold Fields to generate its own power. Self-generation is not uncommon overseas, but it is rare for any but very large or very small operations in the United States. Surprisingly, under certain conditions a mine can generate its own power profitably, and Gold Fields has found that the associated operating and maintenance problems are minimal. The following report details what factors went into this decision and how it works. Hopefully, it can serve as a guideline for those who may find themselves in a similar position. History In the spring of 1986, Davy McKee Corp. was contracted by Gold Fields Mining Corp. to provide design engineering and construction management for the chimney Creek Mine. Chimney Creek is located about 50 mi northeast of Winnemucca, NV in a remote part of Humboldt County. The nearest industry using utility power was the Pinson Mine, about 13 mi from the proposed plant site. The existing electric line was not capable of carrying another mine the size of Chimney Creek, which required 29 million kwh per year. There were three options available to Gold Fields for the power supply: 1 )Power could be supplied by the public utility from a coal-fired plant about 30 mi away by constructing a new line to the mine,

The Republic of Ghana, located on the West Coast of Africa, is one of the West African countries rich in bauxite deposits. The main occurrences of bauxite deposits are at Sefwi Bekwai in the Western Region, Aya-Nyinahin in the Ashanti Region, Atewa Range near Kibi and at Mount Ejuanema both in the Eastern Region of Ghana. These bauxite deposits belong to the so-called blanket deposits as they are associated with erosion surfaces of old peneplains and occur as cappings on the flat tops of hills or mountains whose heights are generally greater than 600 metres above sea level. These deposits can also be classified as laterite-silicate bauxites since they have been formed under tropical weathering conditions. Genetic and mineralogical investigations have revealed that all bauxite deposits of Ghana are the result of indirect bauxitization processes, for the minerals of the weathering parent rocks have not been transformed directly into gibbsite. In all cases, lithomarge of kaolinitic clay can be recognised. The geology of the major occurrences of bauxite in Ghana shows that the Mount Ejuanema deposit is the only deposit associated with the Voltaian System of rocks. This rock System consists mainly of sandstone, shale, mudstone, conglomerates and pebbly beds. All the otter deposits are associated with the Birimian System of rocks which are made up of metamorphosed lavas,pyroclastic rocks, hypabyssal basic intrusives, phyllites, schists, tuffs and greywackes.

A consortium of Canadian mining companies, engineering firms and the Ontario Government has supported Hydrochem's efforts in the last year to design and cost a 10 tpd NITROX PROCESS® demonstration plant. A 5 kg per hour mini plant was installed at the Hydrochem facilities in Brampton, Ontario. This paper describes design testwork on Dickenson Mines arsenopyrite concentrate and application of the findings to the demonstration plant flowsheet. The control of nitrates in discard solids and stack gases is discussed in detail. Nitric acid oxidation of arsenopyrite results in significant ele- mental sulphur formation, enough for it to be detrimental to sub- sequent cyanidation. Flowsheet variations aimed at dealing with this process characteristic are discussed and testwork results on one option (hot liming) are described.

The nature of business in a free enterprise system is to maximise the return on an investment i.e. to maximise the wealth of the shareholders. This is normally achieved within constraints dictated by many agencies, one of which is the health and welfare of the employees. In the mining industry considerable effort has been expended in improvements in this field, however, the major problem still confronting the practicing ventilation or environmental engineer is the determination of what standards he should design for, which satisfy both the economic and health requirement s. Normally the basic health requirements are satisfied by the minimum standards defined in regulations and codes of practice. These are, however, based on an acceptance of a certain risk or lower production potential. A prime function of the ventilation engineer is therefore to financially justify and implement improvements to both standards and systems. The main purpose of this paper is to examine the basis and techniques of providing this financial justification. Changes in existing methods to achieve the same standards but at lower costs are also covered.

The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed an active proximity warning system called hazardous area signaling and ranging device (HASARD) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, which is worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels that are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible and vibratory indicators, and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak and on a high wall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed, and it proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

The pressure filtration behaviors of dispersed and flocculated alumnae slurries at high percent solids were investigated with the objective of determining the effect of surfactant type and concentration on slurry properties. A high-purity alumina powder was used as a model solid. Dispersion of the alumina was controlled by pH and by surfactants that are known to act as electric and steric stabilizers. The effects of both ionic and nonionic sutfactants were investigated. Surface charge measurements of the slurries were carried out by an electrokinetic sonic amplitude (ESA) method to better understand the mechanisms. The effect of surfactant type and concentration on the kinetics of pressure filtration and cake properties are discussed.

Equations for power draft, capacity and work input for predicting the performance of industrial grinding mills are derived based on torque measurements using a laboratory instrumented mill. These derivations are based on mechanical principles and on the first-order kinetics of the grinding process. Rittinger's, Kick's and Bond's laws express work input as work index (Wi) times a particle size function. It is proposed that these laws are only particular cases of more general expressions having the particle size function raised to an exponent, i.e., the work exponent (We). Case studies illustrate the excellent prediction of the Wi - We models compared to the three mentioned laws, and, from the data, the corresponding general mill-sizing equation is derived. As mining fronts converge in sill pillar extraction, the mine seismic hazard can be significantly altered and large seismic events have been known to occur. This study used common seismological tools to analyze the extraction of highly stressed sills from two deep Canadian mines with the objective of characterizing the rock mass failure process and relation to large seismic events. The approach treated a sill pillar as a mine-scale failure process, meaning the temporal and spatial analysis scales needed to exist on a similar scale to a significant part of the mine. The temporal analysis scale overlapped with the entire mining sequence, included several years of data to establish long term change in the characteristics of rock mass failure. The spatial analysis scale included the rock mass surrounding a large part of the convergent mining sequence. To accommodate the large spatial and temporal scales, the highest magnitude 2% of events in the dataset were analyzed. Similar results were shown for sill pillars in both mines. Changes in event location, time, magnitude, energy index and apparent volume were similar to expected behavior of rock failure. Indications of strain hardening and strain softening were observed in the sills. The hardening period was characterized by a high rate of small events, high energy index and low apparent volume, giving an indication of high stress and low rock yield. The softening phase was characterized by a decrease in the rate of small events concurrent with an increase in the rate of large events, low energy index and high apparent volume, indicative of release of stress and increase in deformation. Large magnitude seismicity was strongly related to the softening phase, with several Nuttli magnitude 3.0+ events occurring shortly after the transition from hardening to softening failure regimes. Sill failure was indicated by consistently low EI and low levels of seismicity and seismic hazard in the sill pillar.

12.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter deals with the tools required to design leach operations to minimize spillage from leach pads and ponds and erosion damage during flood events or prolonged wet periods. It outlines methods used to design for prolonged dry periods when water shortage can be a problem. Seasonal operational aspects such as winter shutdown and coping with spring snowmelt periods are also discussed. General criteria useful when designing pregnant and barren solution ponds are also outlined. The aim of these notes is to provide designers and operators with a simp1ified approach to developing design parameters which make effective surface water management easy to achieve without resorting to extensive or elaborate analyses. Section 12.2 briefly outlines the types of problems associated with wet climates and floods, as well as dry periods. Determination of flood design parameters is discussed in Section 12.3. Circuit water balance and pond sizing are outlined in Section 12.4. Pond design considerations are included in Section 12.5. Worked examples are included in Section 12.6. 12.2 RAINFALL/RUNOFF PROCESSES There are two types of rainfall-runoff processes that are important when designing heap leach facilities. The first of- these is the short-term, intense rainfall or snowmelt events that occur over a period of a few minutes or hours, causing flooding that can lead to erosion damage and overtopping of ponds and containment dikes. Specific problems that can manifest themselves during these events include: • Washout of access roads; • Damage to containment dikes; • Flood water contamination of circuit water; • Damage to process water ponds by perimeter erosion or overtopping and erosion; • Loss of process circuit fluid due to breaks in containment dikes or process water ponds; and • Erosion of leach pile and consequent sediment contamination of process fluid. Other types of rainfall -runoff processes that could cause problems are the long-term-(generally months-long) wet or dry periods. Extended wet periods
