Changes in reductant and energy inputs which are required to adjust the slag composition in an ilmenite smelter to a higher or lower FeO content are calculated. The calculated changes are based on the assumption that solidification equilibrium with the freeze lining constrains the slag composition to follow a eutectic groove in the TiO2-FeO-TiO1.5phase diagram. Calculated equilibrium conditions along the eutectic groove are presented, and form the basis of the calculations. The inputs of energy and carbon need to deviate strongly from the steady-state values to adjust the slag composition. The inputs required at any given time depend on the desired rate of change of the slag composition, and the current slag composition. The steady-state relationship of a change in energy input of 5 kWh corresponding to a 1 kg change in carbon input also holds for the changed inputs during transient changes in FeO content. The paper deals with the results of dynamic tests carried out on a range of surface support liners consisting of combinations of mesh (various types), shotcrete, and wire rope lacing. The testing was carried out over the period 1993 to 1998. The dynamic testing method made use of drop weight impact loading of test samples which attempted to simulate realistic in situ conditions, and the range of loading imposed was equivalent to small to severe rockburst conditions. The results of the testing provide quantitative data, in the form of input energy, which is relevant for support design and for the choice of support types appropriate for situations in which significant mine-induced seismicity occurs or is expected to occur. In addition to the wire mesh and shotcrete liner systems tested, estimates of energy capacity are made for other, untested, systems.

Mill log analyses and complementary hot deformation studies were carried out on the as-cast structure and on a hot rolled structure of the same low carbon steel (SAE 1006) that had been processed according to the direct or hot charge route in a compact strip plant. The main softening mechanisms during hot rolling were found to be complete dynamic recrystallization during each pass above about 1000°C for the as-cast structure with an austenite grain size of 277µm and, secondly, incomplete static recrystallization after each pass with a finer austenite grain size of about 26 µm and tested below 1000°C. A two-stage hot working mechanism has also been found by others on a similar steel also processed by the hot charge route and this may appear to be a characteristic of this type of material. Constitutive constants determined from hot working studies were combined with other constants from the literature and incorporated into a grain size development model that correctly predicts the final ferrite grain size in the hot rolled strip steel. The predicted incomplete static recrystallization during the last three finishing passes in the plant appears to result in some retained strain in the hot rolled austenite as it transforms to ferrite on the run-out table. Analyses with the model predict relatively little sensitivity of the final ferrite grain size to process and product variables such as temperature and strain per pass for the last three passes and also the starting austenite grain size in the slab. The introduction of new technology into mining operations is seen as a strategic necessity by many mining companies, in order to improve safety and to improve operational effectiveness. Many attempts have been made in recent years to introduce new technologies into mining operations in southern Africa. Amongst these are noteworthy successes, as well as some disappointing failures. Often, the reason for failure does not lie with the technology itself, but with the work system into which the technology is introduced. Such failures may come with a significant opportunity cost, and have a detrimental effect on future development, simply because the system has not been adequately engineered, and the risks have not been adequately assessed and managed. This paper examines the reasons for such failures, and proposes a methodology to be followed to ensure successful and sustainable implementation of new technologies, such as to reduce technical and financial risk to the company, and to energize the workforce into ensuring the initial objectives of the project are met. The paper also focuses on the application of appropriate technology, and the development of technological applications which are commensurate with the level of development of the work environment into which it is introduced. The paper therefore focuses on the application of risk management, change management, systems engineering and feasibility analysis as being key elements of a successful and holistic technology implementation programme.

On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. A mathematical model for bioleaching at the agglomerate scale is developed. The agglomerate is defined as a unit volume of a heap which contains a solid phase (a size distribution of ore particles), a liquid phase (stagnant and flowing leaching solution) and a gas phase (flowing air and air pockets). Leaching at the level of an ore particle is modelled using a diffusion-reaction equation, and oxidation by attached and detached microbes is treated separately. With the aid of the mathematical model, the effect of particle size distribution on the bioleaching of an ore containing a mixture of chalcocite and pyrite, and a culture of iron oxidizers, is investigated.

Anisotropic behaviours of OhshimaOshima granite were investigated by carrying out uniaxial compression tests, together with observations of microcracks under an optical microscope. The elastic modulus tensor of Oshima granite at 10 per cent strength,E10, were calculated using theoretically formulation of elastic modulus tensor in terms of the second-rank crack tensor for pre-existing open microcracks. Furthermore, with the assumption of orthorhombic elasticity, the nine moduli of Oshima granite E10were determined by uniaxial compression test. Twenty-onemoduli of samples, calculated without assuming any symmetry, also showed orthorhombic features. Direction of the symmetry axes agreed well with the orientation of preexisting cracks. Comparison of crack tensor-based formulation results with the experimentally determined one show that the anisotropy of elasticity of Oshima granite is caused by pre-existing open microcracks, not by pre-existing healed microcracks and also crack tensor formulation can be used, as a first-order approximation at least, to describe the anisotropy of Oshima granite induced by pre-existing open microcracks. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Das anisotrope Verhalten des Oshima-Granits wurde mit Hilfe voneinachsigen Kompressionstests und durch die Betrachtung von Mikrorissen unter einem optischenLichtmikroskop untersucht. Das Elastizitätsmodul von Oshima-Granit bei 10 Prozent Kraft E10wurde berechnet, indem man die Formulierung des Elastizitätsmodultensors, ausgedrückt alsRisstensor zweiter Ordnung theoretisch auf bereits existierende Mikrorisse angewandt hat.Außerdem wurden die neun Module des Oshima-Granits unter der Annahme orthorhombischerElastizität E10mit einem einachsigen Kompressionstest bestimmt. Einundzwanzig Stichproben,die ohne die Annahme irgendeiner Symmetrie genommen wurden, zeigten ebenfallsorthorhombische Merkmale. En outre, sur base del’hypothèse de l’élasticité orthorhombique, les neuf modules du granit d’Oshima ont étédéterminés par des tests de compression simple. Vingt et un modules d’échantillons, calculés endehors de toute hypothèse de symétrie, ont aussi montré des caractéristiques orthorhombiques. The modern theory of sampling of particulate minerals essentially consists of a recent generalization of the procedures for applying and calibrating the formula usually known as ?Gy?s Formula? for sampling variance control, in which the central concept is a parameter called the liberation factor l. A model which can be experimentally adjusted was proposed by one of the authors several years ago, based on geostatistical considerations. This new model, which relates the liberation factor to the sizes of the fragments and mineral grains, solves the usual difficulties faced in the past, and permits predictions that are well verified in practice. Unfortunately, an older, arbitrary and less general formula is still widely used. The vast majority of today?s misapplications of Sampling Theory of Particulate Materials can be traced back to the use of this antiquated and generally incorrect model. Following a brief history of the models used for the liberation factor and a description of its main variable, the liberation size, and to illustrate the importance of proper modelling of l, this paper presents demonstrative calculations of the absurdity of the incorrect model using the particular case of gold mineralization as an example, followed by some more positive examples of application.

Open cast mining has been practiced in South Africa since the late1970s under near ideal geotechnical conditions. In the past decade, with the exhaustion of the traditional South African coal fields, geotechnical conditions have deteriorated. In addition, the nature of the open cast coal mining industry is changing from the conventional strip mining of virgin coal seams to the extraction of underground coal pillars by buffer blasted highwalls. These industry changes have resulted in the need to re-examine the manner in which geotechnical engineering is applied to highwall design. This paper proposes a geotechnical design rationale for open cast highwalls. Furthermore, the rationale takes cognizance of the various geotechnical hazards associated with conventional strip mining and pillar extraction by buffer blasted highwalls. The need to use geotechnical domain models and blasting geotechnics, as proactive tools for rock fall reduction, are also discussed.

Chemical states of fluorine in CaO-SiO2-CaF2glasses in a composition range of CaO/SiO2=0.5?1.3 and 5?25 mol%CaF2have been investigated by 19F solid-state NMR with and without MAS. The isotropic chemical shifts of the glasses are close to those of cuspidine crystal (59.4 and64.3 ppm with respect to C6F6) and CaF2crystal (58.6 ppm). The fluoride ions are coordinated with four or less than four calcium ions in this composition range. The chemical shifts move to the lower frequency with an increase in the CaF2content, whereas those are not affected by theCaO/SiO2ratio. The ionic distance between calcium and fluoride ions increases with an increase in the CaF2content. The chemical state of fluorine is not disturbed by the degree of polymerization of the silicate network. Comparing the MAS and static NMR spectra, the second moment attributed to 19F-19F dipole-dipole interaction has been estimated. The values of the glasses range over 3.1?7.3107Hz2andthose are larger than the calculated value of cuspidine crystal. This indicates that fluoride ions form Ca-F clusters in the glasses and that the size of clusters increases with increasing the CaF2content. Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC-arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC-arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilization and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be thevehicle to drive performance in the short-term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development. Traditionally, mineral reserves management at most underground mines in Zimbabwe focus on maintaining large mineral reserves so that the time between development and production is as long as possible. Historical data at Shabanie mine, a Zimbabwean sub-level caving underground mining operation, confirms this practice. However, the high cost of underground development means that the luxury of large buffer mineral reserves cannot be justified. Furthermore significant increases in the costs of production, exacerbated by the current unfavourable economic climate, make the wisdom of extending development workings well ahead of use questionable. Poor ground conditions at Shabanie mine, mean that some development ends have to be re-mined two or three times due to partial or complete closure between the time they are mined and the time they are utilized. In order to reduce the inordinately high support costs associated with closure of development ends a new ?just-in-time? (JIT) approach that provides development ends as and when they are needed, has been adopted. Accordingly a model to determine an appropriate ?just-in-time? rate of development has been created. The JIT development model indicated that the mine could reduce development rates from 330 m/month in 2001, to 160 m/month in 2002 and achieve savings of about 50% on annual support costs, but still assure customers of a long-term product supply. The mine accepted the model in November 2001 and began implementing it in 2002. Results of the implementation will be reviewed in 2003.

The predevelopment and preparation of a total infrastructure in a deep level mining environment, prior to the shaft system being commissioned has major advantages. This paper intends to indicate these advantages and outline an understanding of the disadvantages. These benefits can be classified in three basic groups: the financial and timing advantages, a knowledge of the ore body and the development of required technology to meet the design parameters. The required technology in many aspects was still to be developed prior to successful application. Stemming from the technological evolution are some secondary advantages which will be described in each of the groups. Safety and health considerations and some practicalities made some of the new technology redundant prior to the actual application. In each case the actual achievements and the anticipated benefits will be indicated to allow the reader to distinguish clearly between planned and actual achieved advantages.

AngloGold South Africa region currently consists of twelve gold plants. These plants use a combined total of $20 million of cyanide per annum. Of this, the major portion (60%) is consumed at two Ergo dump retreatment plants. Historically the primary motivation for cyanide control at Ergo has been one of leach/cost optimization. However, more recently, with the increased public awareness of cyanide in the environment, a secondary but increasingly important motivation for control has been to ensure that only the minimum amount of cyanide is added to the process whilst not compromising leach performance. Following a brief overview of the Ergo process, the methodology in determining the amount of cyanide to be added is described. The paper then traces the developments in cyanide control from very basic manual systems to the current automated control system. In line with the increasingly sophisticated control systems, developments also took place in regards to the method of cyanide analysis. The development of these analysers is also discussed. Whilst cyanide is one of the major drivers, if not the major driver of gold dissolution, it cannot be viewed in isolation particularly with respect to the relationship between cyanide and oxygen as ascertained from the Elsner?s well-known equation. Consequently, in order to control cyanide addition, knowledge of the relative cyanide/oxygen profiles is necessary. Various means investigated at Ergo for pulp oxygenation have therefore been included for the sake of completeness. Finally a comparison is made of the control achieved from the current system compared to the original manual system. The knowledge and experience gained at Ergo is now being used to draw up guidelines for the installation and optimization work at the other AngloGold plants. The net effect of this will be reduced cyanide consumption for the region, which also, apart from the obvious economic benefit, translates into a reduced environ-mental risk.

he flotation studies on hematite were carried out using di (2-ethylhexyl) Phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) as the collector. The possible mineral reagent interaction was studied through electrokinetic and dissolution studies. The shift in zeta potential (PZC) and decrease in dissolution of iron in the presence of D2EHPA indicated that D2EHPA was specifically adsorbed on hematite surface. The adsorption imparted necessary hydrophobicity for flotation of hematite. Hematite could be floated selectively from hematite and quartz synthetic mixture. This paper focuses on the role of the coal mine surveyor at the start of the 21st century. It demonstrates that surveyors must look beyond their legal appointment and pursue opportunities to add value at an operational or corporate level of the company. It also exposes the shortfall of statutory appointments in defining the surveyor?s role in terms of key business drivers of the company. One such an opportunity is the potential role of the surveyor in mineral accounting and quality assurance to meet mine requirements, market specifications and standards pertaining to corporate governance and reporting. Finally, some thoughts are expressed on what can be done to elevate current practice to best practice and how to achieve this goal

The thermodynamic activity of MnO was measured in MnO-CaO-MgO-SiO2 slags that are typically encountered in the production of manganese-containing stainless steels. A gas equilibration-quenching technique was employed in measuring the activities. Activities of Mn in Pt-Mn alloys were redetermined at 1600ºC, which reconfirmed earlier results of strong negative deviations. MnO activities were then measured by equilibrating slags of various compositions based on a statistical experimental design procedure with Pt-Mn alloys under controlled partial pressure of oxygen in MnO saturated platinum crucibles at 1600ºC. Activities of MnO were found to increase with increasing concentration of MnO, basicity and CaO to MgO ratio. Two multi-coefficient regression models were developed to predict the activities and activity coefficients of MnO in slags at 1600ºC. Keywords: activity, MnO, slag

Existing processes for the recovery of platinum group metals (PGM) from UG-2 ores place stringent requirements with regard to chromite content upon feed material to the plant. An alternative hydrometallurgical process for which this is not an issue is proposed that involves reductive roasting of the ore followed by leaching with HCl/chlorine, ion exchange, and recovery of PGM from the ion exchange eluate by reduction. Problems associated with leaching of PGM are discussed and results of laboratory testwork for each of the process steps are given.

?Soil quality is the capacity of a soil to function, within ecosystem and land use boundaries, to sustain biological productivity, maintain environmental quality, and promote plant, animal and human health?. In the long-term, vegetative rehabilitation of mining wastes aims at, as far as possible, the proper ecological integration of the reclaimed area into the surrounding landscape, which is sustainable and requires minimal maintenance. A certain succession pattern is therefore needed. Recent ecological concepts recognize the role of the substrate?s quality and nutrients in affecting the rates and directions of succession patterns. Although pedogenesis and eventually soil quality in mine waste are not well known, monitoring of soil quality parameters in kimberlite mine tailings reveal a remarkable establishment and or improvement of specifics oil quality indicators. During the same time the vegetative cover?s total functionality as well as reproductive ability improved. Functions of soil, and thus soil quality, can be assessed at the field, farm, ecosystem, pedosphere, and global scale. It is recognized, however, that management of soil becomes increasingly difficult at larger scales, but for demarcated mine waste sites it is possible to ameliorate and manage and assess soil functions and quality. Therefore the significance of the study is the following: soil functions and quality become inseparable from the idea of system sustainability, and are considered as key indicators of ecosystem sustainability on rehabilitated mine tailings material.
