The high-resolution three-dimensional (3-D) seismic reflection data acquired for Impala Platinum between 1998 and 2002 in the western Bushveld Igneous Complex form an integral part of Impala?s mine planning and development programme. These data are of sufficiently high quality to provide unprecedented 3-D models of the geological structure of the Merensky Reef and UG2Chromitite Reef, from which the mine deduces the size, geometry and distribution of mineable blocks. Conversely, the seismic data details zones of un-mineable ground caused by structural disturbances in the form of potholes, fault zones and pegmatoid intrusions. Furthermore, variations in dip and strike are well imaged, allowing the mine planners to optimize the mine design and layout. Current interpretation work is focused on enhancing the accuracy of these geological model seven further through the analysis of ?seismic trace attributes.? Preliminary testing on the Impala Platinum 3-D seismic volume has shown that attribute analysis has the potential to illuminate a number of geological reef disturbances that are otherwise ?invisible? in the original seismic time volume. Potential areas of improvement include inter alia: ?Improved definition of major fault zones ?Improved definition of zones of reef depression (?slumping?) ?Identification of reef terracing and/or reverse dip.. The mould flux plays a crucial role in the continuous casting operation of steel due to its multi-functional assignment as lubricator and heat flux controller. In reality, the commercial fluxes can fall short of the expectations of the operator. In such cases, the performance of the mould flux reduces production throughput in the casting machine. This paper presents the results of a study of two different commercial mould fluxes in continuous casting of steels. The results of online sampling during casting, as well as off-line measurements in the laboratory, are presented. Mould flux powder and slag samples from the caster have been characterized with respect to melting behaviour, interfacial tension and thermal diffusivity, using various measuring techniques. An experimental technique has been developed in order to simulate the melting behaviour of a flux in the mould, which has been found to be useful for qualitative studies. A cross-sectional view of different powders reveals that up to four different material layers may exist in the bed: a loosely packed powder layer, sintered layer, semi-solid layer and liquid slag layer. It is found that the melting rate of the mould flux is dependent on the liquid slag layer thickness. Thus, in a continuous casting operation the melting rate is likely to be non-uniform with position in mould due to the difference in liquid slag layer thickness. Mould slag composition is found to be influenced by the starting powder for as long as 30 min, representing a large part of the first heat casting time. Rock engineering is concerned with the design of rock structures generated by mining activities. Therefore, rock engineering designs have major implications for the safe recovery of mineral deposits and operating costs. The paper deals with a few challenges facing rock mechanics engineers operating in the hard rock underground mining environment in South Africa. Finally, examples are included, which may assist rock mechanics engineers in providing better designs, which could ultimately lead to further improvement in safety and lower operating costs.

A prediction model, developed by Central Mining Research Institute (India) for evaluation of fire risk rating of underground coal mine panels in bord and pillar working in respect of their proneness to spontaneous heating, is presented in this paper. The concept used in this model is innovative and user friendly. This model may be applied to a panel where extraction is carried out using any of the techniques: i) depillaring with formation of small pillars as final operation, ii) extraction by broadening of galleries, iii) depillaring with hydraulic sand stowing, and iv) depillaring with caving. Here, major fire risk parameters are short-listed and divided into three broad groups in accordance with the nature of their contribution to the spontaneous heating of a mine panel. The paper describes the procedure for estimating the fire risk rating of individual groups using separate objective type models developed for this purpose. Then it evaluates the overall fire risk rating of the panel by combining the fire risk ratings of all the three broad groups. The model is tested with the field data collected from different collieries spreading across the country and with the laboratory data for critical assessment of fitness. The junior and small-scale mining sectors in South Africa play an important role in the livelihoods of numerous communities. Mining presents an opportunity, in the post-1994 democratic era, for many individuals to obtain access to much required empowerment and socio-economic development. These sectors are, however, not without numerous characteristics that pose problems for operators, legislators, and other role-players. Mining is inherently risky, with operators experiencing frequent difficulties and challenges throughout the life of mine. Opportunity exists, and needs to be enhanced, for junior and small-scale prospects and operations to include technical risk assessment techniques in documentation presented in search for funding, and in optimizing monthly planning and longer-term functioning. The focus here is to explore how the risk management cycle may currently be applied to a mineral resource suitable for exploitation by the junior and small-scale mining sectors. No management process can create additional value in the ground, but various available mechanisms can go a long way to quantifying the inherent risk that exists, highlighting the need to manage the risks and hopefully allowing the entrepreneur access to the intrinsic opportunities of the emerging mining sector in South Africa.

The interest shown in our paper by Drs Schaekers and Dew, and their favourable comments, are appreciated. However, some of their remarks require a response. Stability testing procedures Regarding the issue of stability-testing procedures, we concur that no long-term procedure has been accepted by either environmentalists or the mining/processing industry as a valid method to test the long-term stability of solid wastes. We agree that the method we used is no exception, and we certainly did not claim that it should be recognized as such. What we did attempt to portray was that we had designed the test procedure in an attempt to simulate, at a very small scale, a tailings dam environment.

Coal desulphurization by flotation is often difficult due to the surface oxidation of coal pyrite. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were adopted to obtain detailed information about the surface oxidation of pyrite. Fresh pyrite surfaces were found to be hydrophilic, and to turn hydrophobic after initial oxidation, with oxidized products such as polysulphide FeSx and free sulphur. The oxidized products on the pyrite surface were reduced by an electrochemical method, returning the surfaces to a hydrophilic state and thus increasing the separating efficiency of coal from pyrite by flotation. Driefontein Consolidated Limited has a proud history in the South African gold mining industry dating back to March 1945 with the formation of the West Driefontein Gold Mining Company. The reclamation gold plant at West Driefontein was originally built as a uranium recovery plant in 1970. With the collapse of the uranium oxide yellow cake market, the uranium plant was closed in 1988and successfully converted into a gold plant, recovering gold from repulped tailings dams1. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant utilized milling, leaching, conventional rotary vacuum filtration and cementation to recover the gold at a rate of 200,000 dry tons per month. The No. 1 tailings dam (at a head grade of 0.8 Au g/t) began to near the end of its life during 1996, and the next slimes dams to be treated, the No. 2tailings dam (at a lower head grade of 0.56 Au g/t) was found too marginal for reprocessing using the filtration technology. Alternate technologies were investigated, particularly the carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant based on the Anglo-American Corporation (AAC) pump-cell technology at the Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company?s East gold plant which was operating profitably at lower head grades2. The AAC pump-cell technology is based on the carousel mode of operation2. The suitability of CIP technology for the West Driefontein Reclaim plant was investigated using a pilot plant pump-cell supplied by Kemix The data gathered were utilized in sizing a full scale AAC pump-cell plant. This plant was motivated, built and commissioned on the 22nd of November 1996. Incorporating 6 eighty cubic metre AAC pump-cells. The West Driefontein Reclaim plant initially treated repulped slimes dam material. A subsequent change of feed material to current arisings (from the main gold plant) occurred in1997 in order to convert mills for waste rock treatment. Currently the reclaim plant treats a combination of current arisings and waste rock (milled at the reclaim site). The new CIP plant replaced twenty-seven rotary vacuum filters. A comparison between the filters and CIP in terms of operating costs was undertaken, as well as a performance analysis of the CIP plant to determine its flexibility in terms of variation of the throughput, pulp density, gold input, leaching efficiency prior to CIP, and the rate of carbon movement.

Premature coating failures of new and refurbished structural steelwork of clarifiers have been a common occurrence at power generation plant in recent years. Several of these failures have ended in disputes regarding which party was actually to blame for the early degradation of the coating system, i.e. quality of the power station?s water, poor application, substandard materials, outdated corrosion protection specifications, etc. Having investigated several of these premature failures, it is clear that the corrosion protection of clarifier steelwork is a highly complicated process and that the painting work needs to be closely monitored in order to ensure long-term protection by whichever product that is applied. The need for quality control inspections during the painting of the plant is often underrated during the project planning stage, also the importance of detailed corrosion protection specifications that consider not only the practical application of the materials, but also the quality control responsibilities of the Contractor, End User and Third Party Inspectorates that may be involved. This paper considers the application constraints of coatings to clarifier structural steelwork and importance of stringent quality control procedures in order to ensure the long-term performance of the corrosion protection systems.

Water represents 80?85% of the volume of mineral pulp processed in flotation circuits. Imperatives for a more detailed focus on circuit water quality and its control have come from increasing requirements to use relatively impure primary water supplies (e.g. high salinity, treated sewage) and high proportions of recycle from tailings dams, thickener overflows, dewatered and filter products. An integrated methodology for examining process water quality and its effect on minerals separation has been developed coupled with minerals surface chemistry across the complete processing circuit. Unrecognised factors, including varying proportions of water streams (daily or hourly), colloidal precipitation, highly variable pH and Eh, reaction and dissolution of minerals, minerals surface layer coatings, residual reagents and their reaction products, and microbiological activity have been studied in eight mineral processing circuits. The methodology combines: solution survey and modelling; microbiological surveys; minerals surface analysis and modelling; and process response. It has been possible to match the predicted (model) pulp chemistry with that measured from surveys of the solution and mineral surfaces. Treatment methods have included: monitored and balanced stream combinations; organic species removal; flocculation and aggregation; induced precipitation; dissolved air flotation; ageing (oxidation, UV exposure); and chemical surface conditioning of minerals. Some specific achievements from the methodology applied in plant and laboratory testing, with examples from case studies, will be described.

"The study presents a control strategy implemented at the Nkomati nickel mine flotation plant for process stabilization and improvement. The control strategy involves flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate stabilization and the flotation cell mass pull control. The flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate is operated at a fixed set point. The initial control strategy involved varying the flow rate to maintain the concentrate tank level thereby reducing pump cavitation. The flotation cells mass pull control comprises air rate manipulation into the cells with the exception of the recleaners. The air rate into cells is automated to adjust based on the concentrate tank level variation. The control strategy was implemented on the roughers, cleaners and the recleaner circuit. The recleaner cells air flow rate is adjusted based on the MgO content in the concentrate. The stabilization of the flotation concentrate volumetric flow rate and the mass pull by aerate automation will increase the scope of optimization for further process improvement. The immediate benefit of the control strategy implementation was plant stability. Disturbance to the flotation cells downstream was minimized due to stable flow rate, and the air addition manipulation ensured that the concentrate tank levels are maintained, minimizing pump cavitation. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is a challenging process because it is influenced by a large number of factors, including the flotation feed characteristics. One of the ore types mined at Nkomati nickel mine is the main mineralized zone (MMZ). The MMZ ore is hosted in the Uikomst complex, a Ni-Cu-PGE-Cr- mineralized, layered basic to ultra-basic intrusion which hosts commercially viable magmatic base-metal sulphides (De Waal et al., 2001). The MMZ ore is a heterogeneous sulphide mineral resource with a varying sulphide mode of occurrence and texture. The beneficiation of the complex sulphide ore is challenging due to the presence of impurities in the ore. The impurities report to the flotation final concentrate and penalties are levied if the impurities are beyond the contractual limits."

The novel technology of phytoremediation embraces plant accumulation processes for the cleanup of toxic heavy metals and organic chemicals. Several plant species have been identified that are excellent hyperaccumulators of a number of heavy metals, e.g., Brassica juncea (Indian mustard) and Thlaspe caerulescens (Alpine pennycress). Other speciesincluding Myriophyllum brasiliense(Parrot?s feather), Salixsp. (willow), and Popullussp. (poplar) have also demonstrated phytoremediating abilities.

Variogram analysis and kriging lack robustness in the presence of outliers and data with long-tailed distributions, which often arises when estimating grades in precious metal deposits. The capping technique, consisting of truncating the data to some top-cut grade, is widely used in order to mitigate the influence of the values in the upper tail of the distribution. However, this procedure omits part of the grade variability and is likely to provoke a bias in the estimates. To avoid these issues, a recently proposed approach is to decompose the grade of interest into three components (the truncated grade, a weighted indicator above the top-cut grade, and a zero-mean residual) and jointly estimate the truncated grade and the indicator by cokriging. This approach is attractive as it provides unbiased grade estimates, allows choosing the ?optimal? top-cut value, and essentially works with truncated and indicator data, thus avoiding the use of outlying values for calculating sample variograms and performing spatial interpolation. This work presents an application of this approach to a disseminated gold deposit that has been identified through exploration drilling. The effect of using an indicator covariate is assessed through leave-one-out cross-validation, by comparing the grade estimates with the true grades and with the grade estimates obtained with the conventional capping approach, which considers only the truncated grade as the variable of interest. As a result, cokriging the truncated grade and the indicator above top-cut grade outperforms the conventional capping approach, yielding significantly more accurate estimates. A few complementary guidelines are provided for validating the model hypotheses and for the implementation of cokriging.

Solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach, using an oxime extractant, e.g. LIX 984 or Acorga is a well-known and establishedprocess. As the process advances, Cu is extracted to the solvent and is replaced by H+in the aqueous phase. At high acidity the distribution coefficient of Cu between the solvent and the aqueous phase decreases, and eventually a relatively high concentration of Cu remains in the raffinate, regardless of the number of equilibrium stages. In many processes this phenomenon is immaterial, as the raffinate returns to the leaching and no copper is lost. But when the copper raffinate is used for processing of additional metals, minimal concentration of Cu in the raffinate is essential for an effective process. The recommended process includes three steps: SX-1?standard extraction of Cu with oxime. The resulting raffinate contains about 6?8 g/lCu and 50 g/lH2SO4. SX-N?Extraction of most of the acid into an amine-based solvent, and stripping it with a base, e.g. aqueous ammonia, caustic, Na2CO3etc. The extraction removes no metals, but decreases the concentration of acid from 50 to10 g/l. SX-2?Extraction of the neutralized solution once more with oxime, to remove the residual copper. Such a process enables one to get down to 100?150 ppm Cu in the final raffinate. This process was developed and tested in the R&D facility at Chambishi Metals plc, by a joint team of Chambishi & Bateman, using Cognis LIX 984N and real solutions from the plant. In the laboratory the equilibrium isotherms for SX-1, SX-2 and the neutralization were developed. Computer simulation of the results showed that the optimal configuration is two stages for both extraction and stripping for SX-1. For SX2, 2?3 stages of extraction and two stages of stripping are needed. The stripping stages may be common to both SX-1 and SX-2. The neutralization of SX1 raffinate was tested both by conventional precipitation with lime and by extraction with alamine-based solvent extraction and stripping with a solution of 10% NaOH. For the SX-N only one stage was needed for both the extraction and stripping. The bench scale pilot plant was run for both SX-1 and SX-2. The results were very similar to the simulated ones, and the configuration of 2E2S for SX-1 and 3E2S for SX 2 delivered the required raffinate with less than 150 ppm Cu.

Complete stress-strain-volume change behaviour including post peak softening behaviour of the samples, are presented. Strength and deformation parameters are given. Outline This paper will consider the implications of the mine closure provisions set out in the new Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act and draft regulations. A comparison will be made with the existing provisions in the Minerals Act and the mine closure policy of the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME). The paper will consider whether the new provisions have the potential for improving performance as regards mine closure. It will investigate the financial provisions requirements and the implications of these provisions for mines. It will consider the requirements for a social and labour plan and consider the implications of this for mine closure and its funding. It will analyse the provisions relating to the transfer of environmental liabilities to third parties and consider the implications of this in the case of closing mines and non-closing mines. Finally it will consider the issue of residual legal liability of a mining company once a closure certificate has been issued.

In extracting base metals from orebodies, sulphide as well as oxide, the main environmental concern is sulphur, whether in the form of sulphurous gases or sulphate in liquid form. Generally sulphur is in over supply in developed countries mainly because of strict legislation to capture it. In developing countries, on the other hand there is usually a shortage of sulphur because of less strict environ-mental legislation. Africa falls in this second category and the African continent imports substantial amounts of sulphur, despite the fact that large quantities of sulphur are emitted by smelters, thermal power stations, coalmines, fertilizer manufacturers and others. Other than making acid from gaseous emissions, existing methods to capture sulphur from gaseous and liquid effluents are uneconomical and it ends up in the environment either as ammonium sulphate (from gaseous effluents) or as gypsum (from liquid effluents). The CSIR?s Environmentek and Key Structure Holdings have developed a process whereby gaseous sulphur emissions and sulphates in liquid effluents can be economically captured and converted into elemental sulphur and metal carbonates. The elemental sulphur is of high purity as it is precipitated from a gas stream and is readily marketable. The metal carbonates (barium or calcium) can be recycled back to the process or marketed. The only harmful by-product of the process is carbon dioxide. Should natural gas or methane be available, the carbon dioxide could be reduced by about one third. Should solar, wind or hydro energy be available to generate hydrogen, the carbon dioxide emissions would be zero. Employing this technology could make Africa independent of sulphur imports and furthermore reduce the impact of acid rain and seepage of sulphate from gypsum and other waste dumps into the environment.

In recent years there has been an increased focus on corporate governance matters worldwide. The duties and responsibilities of directors of companies have come under close scrutiny, with shareholders increasing their demands for greater responsibility and accountability. Media attention and pressure groups have also had their effect. Governmental actions have supported these demands and directors have witnessed sweeping legislative changes imposing more onerous duties and liabilities than formerly imposed upon them at common law and in terms of the Companies Act. At the same time, the power of regulatory bodies has been increased to enforce this legislation and make someone pay to remedy an alleged infringement. Breach of such duties may incur personal or criminal liability, or both. Environmental protection legislation has become a particularly prevalent feature in this regard, and the number and complexity of statutes concerning the environment have increased over the past few years. Directors of South African companies will be familiar with relevant acts such as the National Environmental Management Act 107 of 1998; Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act 43 of 1983;Hazardous Substances Act 15 of 1973, as well as the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Now the directors of mining companies are faced with the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002.
