If an orebody has been drilled to achieve some level of regulatory compliance, then a number of associated geological databases will exist, representing 10 000 to 100 000 m plus of core intervals. The databases usually contain data about assays, lithology, mineralisation and geophysical attributes. They will also include location information such as collar positions and downhole surveys. Obviously this data is collected by geologists for, predominantly, geologists and mining engineers. However, from a process design viewpoint process engineers usually ignore the geology where possible and rely on a small number of metallurgical test samples. Typically these test samples are sourced from convenient and available cores or from a small number of specially drilled metallurgical holes. One of the worst instances known to the author was the design of a SAG mill using only two SAG specific test results (one for each of the major ore types) while, geologically, the orebody was defined by more than 30 000 m of drilling. This paper sets out a philosophy to maximise the use of the geological data, both for process design and in preparation for the commissioning phase of projects. Geological data is used in the identification of preferred locations for metallurgical test samples, for checking the metallurgical validity of the geological ore-type definitions, where necessary developing new ore-type definitions (geometallurgical domains) and developing mathematical relationships for the estimation of important metallurgical factors across the geological database. If the estimation of factors (for example ore competence) is considered reliable enough then there is also the possibility of feeding calculated data back into the block modelling process to allow the generation of metallurgically relevant outputs in the mine plans.

The Hishikari Gold Mine consists of epithermal vein type Au-Ag deposits, each of which has several veins standing almost in parallel each other and inclining 70 to 90 degrees. The veins have 1 to 3m widths and are extracted mainly by drifting and bench stoping with waste rock fill. The Hishikari has tried to optimise the stope dimensions by the Potvin’s Stability Graph Method, which is well known as an easy and effective tool to design appropriate stope dimensions. The method, however, has some limitations of application due to its simplicity so that it has been used only in limited cases. The authors developed a new numerical approach, based on 2D FEM solu-tion for the stability analysis. As a result, it has been possible to solve the Hishikari situation. The authors also introduce the concept of the design approach and compare the results obtained by us-ing the approach with the database of the Stability Graph Method for validation. La mine d’or Hishikari se compose de gisements d'Au-AG avec des types de filons épither-maux dont chacun a plusieurs veines qui sont presque parallèle les unes par rapport aux autres et sont inclinées de 70 à 90 degrés. Les veines ont de 1 à 3 m de largueur et elles sont principalement extraites en creusant et en abattant des bancs de roches encaissantes. Hishikari a essayé d’optimiser les dimensions du chantier d’exploitation avec la méthode de graphique de stabilité de Potvin, bien connue comme un outil facile et efficace pour avoir des dimensions de chantier d’exploitation appropriées. Toutefois, la méthode a certaines limites d’application dues à sa sim-plicité de sorte qu’elle a été utilisée seulement dans des cas limités. Les auteurs ont développé une nouvelle approche numérique, basée sur la solution 2D FEM, pour l’analyse de stabilité. Par conséquent, il a été possible d'expliquer la situation de Hishikari. Hishikari hat versucht, die Abmessungen des Abbauorts durch das Potvins Stabilitätskurvenverfahren zu optimieren, das als einfaches und effizientes Mittel für die Erzielung angemessener Abmessungen des Abbauorts bekannt ist. Das Verfahren weist jedoch aufgrund seiner Einfachheit einige Anwendungsbeschränkungen auf, so dass es nur in einigen Fällen benutzt worden ist. Vor diesem Hintergrund haben die Autoren einen neuen numerischen Ansatz entwickelt, der hinsichtlich der Stabilitätsanalyse auf der 2D-FEM-Lösung beruht. Dadurch wurde es möglich, das Problem von Hishikari zu lösen. The support of stopes and tunnels in South African gold mines subject to rockburst damage requires special attention. The interaction of a seismic wave with either a stope or a tunnel is subject to a number of variables, namely the distance from the source of the event, the ground velocity, the orientation of the excavation with respect to the direction of the seismic wave, and the geology and fracturing around the excavation. This paper discusses these factors in relation to the support requirements in stopes and tunnels. The need for the integration of hydraulic props with stope support and the use of yielding anchors for tunnel support are emphasized.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. The Empress nickel/copper deposit west of Gatooma in Rhodesia occurs within gabbro and amphibolite, disposed at the contact of a granodiorite stock (Barebottom Hill) and the surrounding greenstones of the Archaen Bulawayan System. The orebody has a pipelike form and a poor surface expression due to plantation of the area by Miocene (Africa) and later Victoria Falls erosion cycles. Barebottom Hill represents a monadnock remnant in the geomorphological surfaces while traces of the once larger Empress orebody have been removed. Limitations in soil geochemistry necessitated both studies of the vegetation ecology and the biogeochemistry of the area, both of which were anomalous. The use of geobotany was found to be restricted but biogeochemistry offers a most effective prospecting tool and was found to define the sub-outcrop of the ore-body more precisely than soil geochemistry since these methods reflect and differentiate anomalies emanating from bedrock mineralisation and those due to surface phenomena.

Most diamonds are liberated from their ores by crushing. Diamond and other coarse grained mineral ores require carefully optimised crushing circuits. Recent advances in computer technology have made possible the on-line capture of crushing plant performance data and, hence, the accurate empirical modelling of the crushing process. Such models are used in simulation studies to determine the optimum operating conditions for a given plant. A system is described which allows operating data from mineral treatment processes to be logged. Up to 16 channels of data may be recorded simultaneously at sampling rates in the kiloHertz range per channel. A data storage and analysis procedure is described which allows the system to make full use of its sampling capabilities.

Deep gold exploration such as is used for Witwatersrand gold deposits is both expensive and time-consuming. This paper provides quantitative guidelines as to the economic optimum number of boreholes and deflections within each borehole for a certain reef characterized by its variability pattern and depth below surface in order to maximize the level of confidence for a fixed drilling budget or to minimize the total drilling cost for a given level of confidence. Portions of the Basal, Vaal, and Elsburg Reefs that show a wide range of variability (sample logarithmic variances of 0,63, 1,05, and 2,06 respectively) are examined at depths below surface ranging from 1000 m to 4000 m over a simulated mining property covering 7000 ha (7000 m by 10000 m). It is concluded that four intersections per borehole are optimum in al the cases considered, which cover the majority of current Witwatersrand exploration, with the exception of the highly variable Elsburg Reef at depths of 1000 m and 2000 m, where boreholes with one and two intersections respectively should be preferred.

Copper concentrate is produced in Chile in the high Andes and transported to the coast for shipping through long distance pipelines. The pipeline and fittings installed have to withstand the high abrasion and corrosion environment of the copper concentrate. To protect the inside tube wall against corrosion, high density polyethylene (HDPE) liner is used. While HDPE liners can protect the steel wall against corrosion, it has also been assumed that the low surface roughness of the HDPE liner also inhibited incrustation caused by calcium carbonate and sulphate deposition. Recent events have indicated otherwise in a couple of concentrate pipelines for which BRASS has provided consultant service. This paper delivers a case study which includes (i) formation of incrustation and adhesion to HDPE liner, (ii) the detection of the incrustation through hydraulic analysis, (iii) the mechanism of removal of incrustation, and (iv) the catastrophic effects of their presence in an emergency situation.

The importance of the minerals industry in the economy of the country is discussed, and the tremendous changes that have taken place over the past two decades, including the widespread application of computers and the use of mechanization, are outlined. A discussion of the future of the minerals industry points out that, with the rise in the price of gold, the life of the gold-mining industry can be expected to extend beyond that previously predicted, and that the demand for uranium, which has been depressed, is uncertain. As a result of the oil crisis, the demand for coal has increased and large expansion programmes are planned. These involve coal exports and the use of coal for the generation of electric power, for the production of liquid fuels, and for the smelting of metals. Technical challenges face engineers in every avenue of the minerals industry: in deep gold mines, underground coal mines, strip coal mines, and open-pit mines. Studies indicate that only one-third of the demand for trained mining and metallurgical engineers is being met and that the position is worsening. However, there are indications that the industry is succeeding in attracting more engineering students, and the supply is expected to improve. These efforts should be co-ordinated, expanded, and intensified. There is a need to ensure that sufficient teaching staff of the right calibre and experience are attracted to universities and technikons. The first degree course is comprehensive and basic, and specialization through post-graduate study should be encouraged. The influence of national service on the education and training of engineers is discussed.

This paper describes the engineering properties of Givi dam foundation. Givi dam will be built across the Givi River on the andesitic rocks (Karaj formation) in Ardabil province (northeast of Iran). Geotechnical investigations including drilling, pumping tests, sampling for laboratory testing and discontinuity survey. Physical and mechanical properties of andesitic rocks such as density, water absorption, porosity, uniaxial compressive strength, triaxial compressive strength, durability and direct shear tests are evaluated in this paper. Discontinuity data are process for the determination of dominant sets and for the rock mass characterization in terms of classification systems ( RMR, Q and RSR ). Correlations between these three classifications are discussed. ABSTRACT: When considering the rock stress component of rock mechanics design, the basic procedure is to consider the pre-existing stress-state in the rock mass and then estimate the disturbance to this stress state as a result of engineering excavation. Failure criteria are applied to the final stress state to establish whether failure will occur. However, during the evolution of the stress state, the failure locus may be reached before the anticipated failure state and, in this case, failure will occur unexpectedly. This indicates that the complete stress path (defined as the variations in magnitudes and orientations of the stress tensor components resulting from engineering-induced or natural changes) must be considered. We list a set of stress path principles with their corollaries and then introduce a new and powerful method for simultaneously illustrating changes in the six independent components of the stress tensor. This method plots the magnitudes of the principal stresses above their orientational paths on the hemispherical projection, to provide a three-dimensional stress path locus for each of the three principal stress components. In connection with this presentational device, we illustrate a number of concepts associated with the stress path in rock engineering. For example, we show how the minor principal stress approaches zero at an unsupported excavation face, the interchange of the trajectories of two principal stresses when their magnitudes become equal, and the influence of the bounds on the principal stresses given by strength criteria. RESUME: Si on s’interesse à la composante “contrainte” lors d’un dimensionnement en mécanique des roches, la méthode de base consiste à considérer l’état de contrainte pré-existant dans le massif rocheux, puis d’estimer la perturbation à cet état générée par l’excavation projetée. Des critères de rupture sont appliqués à l’état de contrainte final pour établir si une rupture va se produire. Cependant, lors de l’évolution de l’état de contrainte, la surface critique peut être atteinte ce qui provoquera une rupture anticipée et, dans ce cas, cette dernière sera inattendue. Cela indique que le chemin de contrainte complet (défini par les variations de l’intensité et de l’orientation des composantes du tenseur des contraintes liées à des causes anthropiques ou naturelles) doit être pris en compte. Nous présentons un ensemble de règles pour les chemins de contraintes ainsi que leurs corollaires et, ensuite, nous introduisons une méthode, nouvelle et puissante, pour présenter simultannement les changements des six composantes du tenseur des contraintes. Cette méthode consiste à tracer l’intensité des contraintes principales sur le chemin d’orientation des contraintes à l’aide d’une projection hémisphérique afin d’obtenir le lieu, en trois dimensions, de chaque contrainte principale. En relation avec cet outil de représentation, nous illustrons certains concepts associés au chemin de contrainte en ingénierie au rocher. Par exemple, nous montrons comment la contrainte mineure tend vers zero à la surface d’une excavation sans soutenement, le changement de direction des deux contraintes principales quand leur intensité deviennent égales, et l’influence des conditions aux limites sur les contraintes fournies par un critère de rupture. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Bei ingenieurmassigen Taetigkeiten in Felsgesteinen ist es noetig die ungestoerten Gesteins Stress Componenten, die vor einem anthropogen Eingriff im Gestein vorhanden waren, zu kennen und erst dann Vorhersagen ueber Stoerung des Stress Zustandes, der durch einen ingenieurmaessigen Eingriff hervorgerufen wird, herzuleiten. Kriterien fuer das Versagen werden im letzten Stadium, des Stress Zustandes angewendet, um zu erfahren ob ein Versagen wohl eintreten wird. Es ist jedoch zu beachten, dass waehrend des Stress Aufbaus ein oertliches Versagen eintreten kann, welches vor dem eigentlichen, erwarteten Versagens Zustand auftritt. Diese Moeglichkeit weist darauf hin, dass der gesammte “Stress Path” (definiert durch die Variationen der Stress Tensor Komponenten in Richtung und Groesse, hervorgerufen durch ingenieurmaessig hervorgerufene oder natuerlich Vorgaenge) betrachtet werden muss. Wir fuehren eine Liste der “Stress Path” Prinzipien auf und stellen dann eine neue und wirksame Methode zur gleichzeitigen Darstellung der sechs unabhaegigen Komponenten des Stress Tensors vor. Diese Methode stellt die Groesse der “Principal Stresses” in Abhaengigkeit von ihrem rauemlichen Weg auf einer hemispherischen Projektion dar und erlaubt hiermit eine drei dimensionale Darstellung fuer jeden Ort des “Stress Path’s” in die drei Haupt Stress Komponenten. Im Zusammenhang mit der hier gegebenen Darstellungsart, verdeutlichen wir eine Reihe von Konzepten in der Felsmechanik. Wir zeigen zum Beispiel, wie der “Minor Principal Stress” Null zustrebt an einer Wand von einer nicht abgestuetzten Ausschachtung, den Austausch von Trajektorien zweier “Principal Stresses” wenn ihre Groessen sich gleichen, und den Einfluss der Groesse von “Principal Stresses” bei gegebenen Kriterien des Festgkeits Versagens.

The process flows of the three flotation circuits at the concentrator of the Black Mountain Mineral Development Company (Pty) Ltd are described. Because of the complexity of the circuits and the associated reagent regime, the plant is equipped with a comprehensive range of control equipment. The different process-control strategies are discussed, and the modifications that have been necessary to the stabilizing control loops in the copper, lead, and zinc flotation circuits are shown in detail. It is concluded that the control strategies have continued to bring about benefits and improvements to the process.

INTRODUCTION What I want to discuss is the future pattern of manpower in the mining industry, and I should like to begin by examining some relevant statistics. There are four areas that must be examined. Firstly, the future rate of production of different minerals must be estimated. Secondly, an assessment must be made of the balance of different mining technologies likely to be used for each mineral. Thirdly, the manpower requirements for each technology must be determined. On Tuesday, 10th November, 1987, The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy held a colloquium attended by some 120 delegates on 'On-Stream Analysis' at Mintek, Randburg. Mr John Moore, Consulting Metallurgist of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa Ltd, introduced Mr Gene Fivaz, the President- Elect of the SAIMM, who read an address by Mr B.C. Alberts, the current President. Mr Alberts was unable to attend the Colloquium owing to urgent business overseas. Opening The opening address emphasized the important role of minerals in the South African economy. In particular, it was noted that 20 per cent of the work force were employed in the minerals industry or associated industries. In recent years, production costs had risen as a result of inflation, and sanctions had had some effect on the exportation of minerals. Thus, there was continuing pressure on the industry to improve recoveries and increase efficiency.

An account is given of a study on the non-oxidative dissolution in aqueous acidic solutions of nickel sulphides of different stoichiometric composition, in which a rotating ring-disc electrode was used. The rate of dissolution was found to depend on the potential of the sulphide and the nickel-to-sulphur stoichiometric ratio. A maximum rate for the dissolution of nickel from nickel sulphides containing an excess of nickel was recorded at potentials around -0,2 to -O,3V. The rate decreased markedly at more anodic potentials. For nickel-deficient nickel sulphides, the nonoxidative dissolution rate increased with a cathodic shift in potential. Under open-circuit conditions, a nickel sulphide of a composition approximating Ni ,S. reacted most rapidly. The dissolution rate was controlled by either a chemical or an electrochemical reaction at the electrode surface, had an activation energy of between 50 and 65 kJ.mol-1, and was independent of stirring speed.

Formulae expressing the dependence of the mass of a grinding ball on the amount of material milled by a ball mill are derived. It is shown that, with the aid of these formulae, it is relativel rsimple for the results of a marked-ball test to be analysed and for the relative performance and cost-effectiveness 0 the various types of ball under test to be evaluated. Predictions based on theory and the results obtained in a marked-ball test in a ball mill are compared detail and shown to be in close agreement. The difficulties associated with marked-ball tests are considered, and an explanation for the decrease in the calculated consumption of the balls, which follows naturally from the theory, is presented. The marked-ball anomaly explained, and it is demonstrated that the ball consumption in a ball mill can be predicted with fair accuracy from the results of a marked-ball test.

Rand (Member) Recent studies have shown that the overall extraction of gold from Witwatersrand ores is increased as the proportion of gold reporting to the amalgamation circuit is increased. Testwork has therefore been carried out with a view to improving recovery by gravity concentration. In this paper, the history of gold recovery by gravity concentration is reviewed, and methods and machines at present in use are briefly described. The results of plant and laboratory tests are presented, and the limitation of existing concentrators is discussed. A pilot plant is being built for the testing of improvements to the existing concentrators and of several new devices, particularly the Reichert-cone concentrator.

The aim of this work was to compare the corrosion behaviour of thermal spray WC ? based coatings before and after annealing. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the phases present in the coatings at various stages. The corrosion resistance of the coatings was measured using electrochemical and immersion corrosion tests. The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion (quantified by corrosion current density) and immersion corrosion tests showed that annealing appears to decrease the corrosion resistance of the coatings. From the XRD results it was determined that the phases that corroded preferentially were cobalt (Co), eta (Co6W6C) and W2C. Keywords: Corrosion, thermal spray, coatings, hardmetals.
