This study examines the patterns and trends in noise exposure documented in data collected by Mine Safety and Health Administration inspectors at U.S. coal mines from 1987 through 2004. During this period, MSHA issued a new regulation on occupational noise exposure that changed the regulatory requirements and enforcement policies. The data were examined to identify potential impacts from these changes. The overall annual median noise dose declined 67% for surface coal mining and 24% for underground coal mining, and the reduction in each group accelerated after promulgation of the new noise rule. However, not all mining occupations experienced a decrease. The exposure reduction was accompanied by an increase of shift length as represented by dosimeter sample duration. For coal miners exposed above the permissible exposure level, use of hearing protection devices increased from 61% to 89% during this period. Participation of miners exposed at or above the action level in hearing conservation programs rapidly reached 86% following the effective date of the noise rule. Based on inspection data, the occupational noise regulation appears to be having a strong positive impact on hearing conservation by reducing exposures and increasing the use of hearing protection devices and medical surveillance. However the increase in shift duration and resulting reduction in recovery time may mitigate the gains somewhat.

The Bureau of Mines conducted an experimental degasification project in Island Creek Coal Co.'s Virginia Pocahontas No. 5 mine. Methane from the over- lying Pocahontas No. 4 coalbed was entering mine workings in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed through fractures in the roof rock. Small-diameter (1-5/8-inch) holes were drilled into the overlying coalbed to reduce the gas pressure and intercept methane flows, which were piped to the surface through an under- ground 6-inch-diam steel pipeline. The total methane flow rate from the vertical holes averaged 150,000 ft3/day for the first month. Methane flows into the mine were reduced by 47 pct, thereby demonstrating the effectiveness of this form of degasification in reducing ventilation requirements and providing a safer working environment.

Engineering controls for overburden drilling include dry dust collection systems, wet dust suppression systems, and enclosed cabs [Zimmer and Lueck 1986; Volkwein et al. 1979]. Proper maintenance of the dust suppression system is critically important for drills using dry dust suppression methods. Failure to rigorously maintain these systems will result in inadequate dust control. Acute silicosis has been reported in miners operating equipment that relies on dry dust suppression [NOSH 1992].

Diamond-bit performance data accumulated by the Bureau of Mines in core-drilling limestone and dolomite show that the physical characteristics of the diamonds and the sizes and types of bits used are economically significant. An analysis of the data establishes one trend of particular significance to those engaged in core drilling: Bits set with small, low-quality drill bort are the most economical. Detailed analysis of the factors that affect diamond-bit performance, such as size and quality of diamonds, sizes and types of bits, percentage of core recovered, and physical characteristics of bit matrices are assessed in the tables, bar charts, and discussion.

Analytical methods for oxygenates in exhaust gases were studied, and emissions of these compounds from automotive engines were measured with and without an oxidation catalyst in the exhaust system. Hydrocarbons, simple mixtures of hydrocarbons, and a single gasoline were used as fuels. With the more complex gasoline, successful analysis was possible only with exhaust from the catalytic system which preferentially converted and thus removed interfering hydrocarbon species. However, it was shown that an estimate of the oxygenate yield from gasoline used in a noncatalytic system can be synthesized from data obtained with simple fuels. Such synthesized data were used for comparison of noncatalytic with catalytic systems. Compared with those of previous studies, results of this work indicate that the action of the catalyst introduced no new oxygenates and reduced both the carbonyl and the total of oxygenates. It is concluded that the compositional character and class distribution of oxygenates in exhaust from catalytic systems may differ significantly from the composition and distribution for oxygenates not subjected to catalytic conversion. The findings also support previous estimates that noncarbonyls may constitute a significant fraction of exhaust oxygenates and may warrant attention in procedures for measurement of the oxygenates.

Most gasolines and naphthas are mixtures of paraffin- series hydrocarbons and comprise such substances as pentane , hexane , heptane , octane , and others up to perhaps dodecane . Many of these hydrocarbons , when mixed with the proper proportions of air and ignited , are highly explosive . It is due to this characteristic that gasoline has become so important as a fuel in internal -combustion engines . Gasoline and naphtha also are used in the industry as solvents and cleaning agents . Because of their explosive properties they are dangerous to use unless the composition is so chosen that the vapor pressure of the mixture is not high enough to produce explosive mixtures with air at the temperature at which they are used . Hydrocarbon mixtures may be made less hazardous by adding some incombustible liquid , such as carbon tetrachloride . Barrier reports the amount of carbon tetrachloride that must be added to different naphthas to render such mixtures free from fire and explosion hazards . He found that the amount of carbon tetrachloride that must be present in the final mixture of naphtha and carbon tetrachloride varied with the density of the naphtha . Of the naphthas tested the amount of carbon tetrachloride necessary to render such mixtures free from fire and explosion hazards ranged from 30 to 70 percent . .. Determination of the fire and explosion hazards of carbon tetrachloridehydrocarbon mixtures would be easy if the boiling points and vapor pressures of the two were the same at any given temperature . This report describes an inexpensive triaxial equipment for testing 2-1 / 8- , 4- , and 5-5 / 8 - inch - diameter rock cylinders subjected to loading conditions comparable to those encountered in underground mining . Only minimal specimen preparation is required . The maximum axial load that can be applied is 250,000 lb , which corresponds to an axial stress of 70,000 psi for the 2-1 /8- inch- diameter specimen . The maximum radial pressure that can be applied is the same for each specimen diameter ; namely , 10,000 psi . The mechanical parts in this equipment are relatively easy to machine and fabricate . The cost of all parts , including the 250,000- lb hydraulic press but not including labor costs , was approximately $ 1,000 .

For lack of comprehensive information, data for the following minerals are excluded: Andalusite, aplite, asphalt, boron, bromine, calcite (optical), calcium chloride (natural), carbon dioxide, clay, columbium (niobium), diatomite (kieselguhr), dumortierite, emery, garnet (abrasive), gem stones (other than diamonds), germanium, greensand, grindstones, helium, indium, iodine, kyanite, lithium, magnesium compounds (other than magnesite), meerschaum, mineral pigments, monazite, natural gas, natural gasoline, oil shale, olivine, perlite, pumice, quartz crystal, radium, sand and gravel, selenium, sillimanite, sodium salts (other than common salt), stone, strontium, sulfur (byproduct), tantalum, tellurium, thallium, topaz (industrial), tripoli) uranium, vermiculite, wollastonite, and zirconium. Provide an improved, rugged, reliable, cost-effective automatic fire protection for mine haulage trucks. Approach Systems that automatically sense and extinguish fires on haulage trucks were designed, built, and in-mine tested. How It Works Temperature sensors mounted above the engine of the truck detect the heat from a fire while it is still small and controllable. A cab-mounted control panel warns the operator of the fire emergency and then automatically triggers the discharge of 60 pounds of multipurpose dry chemical extinguishing agent (from storage tanks through hoses and nozzles) into the engine compartment. If desired, the control panel can be field-adjusted by changing one resistor to delay the discharge for up to 60 seconds to allow time for the operator to stop the truck and shut down the engine. The system can be assembled with either pressurized storage tanks, or a combination of non-pressurized storage tanks plus separate pressure cartridges. This pressure source option is one of the improvements of this system over the earlier systems described in Technology News No. 11. Other improvements are a simplified control circuit and an improved sensor.

The order of identification and in same cases the magnitude of the elastic constants of an anisotropic material depends on the orientation of the cartesian coordinate axes with respect to a set of reference coordinate axes within the material; thus confusion will result unless standard orientations are used. In this paper the relationship between the cause (the internal fabric) and the effect (the elastic properties in this case) is discussed for single crystals and for polycrystalline and amorphous materials. While reference axes based on the cause are used in the IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers) standard for piezoelectric crystals) it is shown that a reference coordinate system that would be suitable and practical for all anisotropic polycrystalline and amorphous materials must be based directly on a three-dimensional expression of the effect. The conventions offered are similar to the IRE standards for piezoelectric crystals) but use the elastic coordinates of the wave surface which can be quite readily established experimentally as the reference coordinates.

To clean coal mine air by developing a low-cost scrubber suitable for belt transfer and similar applications. Approach Design a scrubber operated by water only, with no moving parts. Use conventional water spray nozzles located within a duct to both move and clean the air. Use a droplet eliminator to get the water droplets and mist back out of the airstream. How It Works Conventional scrubbers require a mechanical fan driven by either an electric or a hydraulic motor. They also require water sprays and some type of scrubbing mechanism. The water powered scrubber, however, offers higher reliability over conventional scrubbers since it utilizes the water sprays to both move the air and scrub the particulate from the air. Conventional water spray nozzles are placed near one end of a rectangular duct open at both ends. The sprays are directed towards the far end of the duct where a stationary wave blade water droplet eliminator is located. Movement of the water spray droplets coming from the nozzles generates (by momentum transfer) an air movement In the same direction as the sprays. This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of three samples collected from the Kidney seam, in the Northern Field of the anthracite region. Removal of the sink 1.70 specific gravity material from the samples collected would result in greatly reduced ash contents at yields in excess of 90 percent. The Kidney seam, in the locations sampled, proved to be a low-ash anthracite containing an unusually high percentage of float 1.45 specific gravity material.

The Bureau of Mines presents a theoretical solution for the stresses and displacements in an infinite elastic plate containing a circular hole whose boundary is subjected to applied shear loads over four separated arcs. The results for the applied shear loads can be superimposed on the results for applied radial loads, given in a previous publication, to obtain a complete two-dimensional approximation of the stresses and displacements induced in the rock by tunnel boring machines anchored in a circular tunnel by means of four props. Analysis of the various solutions shows that the tangential tensile stresses induced on the boundary of the circular tunnel by applied radial loads can be minimized in the roof and floor of the tunnel by the application of appropriate shear loads to each of the four props. Thus when planning tunnel boring operations, consideration should be given to the in situ stress field in the rock and the induced stresses in the rock resulting from the applied radial and shear loads produced by the props of the boring machine.

The purpose of this report is to present results of tests on the effectiveness of a spray of water mist, commonly called compressed-air water blast or water blast, in reducing the concentration of dust present in the air shortly after blasting and during mucking of the blasted material. Many observations have been male on the effectiveness of such ,sprays, but published quantitative information on comparative dust concentrations with and without their use, obtained by dust-sampling methods in use in this country, is rare if not absent. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory batch beneficiation tests on a waste granite sludge from New Hampshire to determine the feasibility of recovering a reusable silicon carbide product. The granite sludge responded to attrition scrubbing, desliming, and flotation in either alkaline or acid circuits using fatty acid as a collector. Recovery of over 80 percent of the contained silicon carbide at grades of up to 96 percent SiC was obtained.

Minimize airborne respirable quartz dust produced by continous mining machines. Approach Install a shovel-mounted underboom water spray system on the off-curtain side of the mining machine. Dusty air containing quartz is momentarily trapped under the boom, where it is captured by fine spray mist. The remaining dust cloud is directed immediately behind the curtain before it can migrate back to the machine operator's location. Although haulage truck collisions account for only a small percentage of haulage accidents, the likelihood of severe injury, or even death is very high when such a collision does occur. Most rear-end collisions also result in considerable equipment damage, creating a need for expensive repairs. To improve collision protection, some southwestern surface mines have, for several years, been fabricating and using extended bumpers. In cooperation with these mines, the Bureau of Mines has worked to improve this technology by evaluating the structural requiremnts of extended bumpers. How Extended Bumpers Help The Bureau found that when one large rear-dump haulage truck collides with the rear of another an extended bumper protects the driver of the vehicle that is struck by dissipating the impact energy into the rear tires and pushing the whole vehicle forward. An extended bumper also prevents the box on the truck that is hit from penetrating the cab of the other truck-a typical and serious collision hazard. A further advantage derives from the wide design of the extended bumper which helps prevent damage to truck ladders, thereby minimizing any entry or exit problems. Extended bumpers also provide safe work platforms at the front of large haulage vehicles.

Expanded versions of each program provide a dynamic evaluation of the effects of bit wear, over time, on production.

The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated dust suppression obtained with three different water-spray nozzle systems during underground continuous coal mining at the face. The nozzles were the "regular" nozzle normally used by the mine, and high-efficiency and low-efficiency nozzles selected on the basis of an airborne capture theory of respirable dust by spray drops. The high-efficiency nozzle used one-third less water than the others throughout the testing. Results depended on the type of cutting operation at the face. The sump-downshear operation appeared to involve a significant amount of capture of airborne respirable dust. The same amount of dust was measured when using the high-efficiency and regular nozzles. The dust levels when using the high-efficiency nozzle were about 20 pct less than those measured when using the low-efficiency nozzle. The sump-upshear operation seemed to involve a predominance of other aspects of dust suppression, such as impaction of spray drops onto the face. Compared with the downshear operation, there was a significant reduction in dust levels for a total face operation when using the regular nozzle; dust levels when using the regular nozzle were about 15 pct lower than those measured when using the high-efficiency nozzle.
