"INTRODUCTION Two holes were drilled on the G. S. Stiner zinc prospect, in the Lead Mine Bend area of Union County, Tenn. The holes were drilled in the vicinity of an area of gossan float and were bottomed in the Maynardville formation of the Nolichucky shale. Drilling was started January 24 and completed February 16, 1947. The total footage drilled was 421.2 feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The drill holes are located in the bottom land northeast of the store (fig. 1 and 2)."

The mucus secreted in the respiratory tract provides the first barrier against inhaled particulate and gaseous toxicants. Trachea removed from pathogen-free rats were maintained as organ cultures and used to study the effects of coal dust exposure on the synthesis of mucin. The high molecular weight isotopically labeled (3H-glucosamine, 14Cleucine or 35S-sulfate) mucin could be purified by gel filtration, treatment with testicular hyaluronidase, ion exchange chromatography, delipidation and CsBr density gradient centrifugation. To examine effect of coal dust on mucin production, groups of explant cultures were exposed to media containing coal dust at 100 µg per ml every 2 days for 2 weeks while control cultures were treated with media without dust. Analysis of the spent culture media showed that treatment with dust markedly decreased the production of nondialysable glycoproteins as well as hyaluronidase-resistant acid-precipitable fraction consisting mainly of mucin. Since the synthesis of protein was not affected to the same extent the decrease in mucin production is not entirely due to cell death. In separate experiments rats were subjected to in vivo coal dust exposure in inhalation chambers and tracheae of these and control rats were removed for explant cultures. The incorporation of precursor isotopes into mucin by these explant cultures are being examined. The Bureau of Mines investigated an electrolytic technique for oxidizing ore slurried with brine to determine its effectiveness in extracting mercury from ores. Optimization experiments conducted on a 2.5-pound-mercury-per-ton ore resulted in 95 percent mercury extraction with operating conditions of 30° C, a current density of 0.5 ampere per square inch, and a treatment time of 3.5 hours. Corresponding power consumption amounted to 38 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore treated. Amenability experiments conducted on 62 different mercury ores resulted in 90 to 99 percent mercury dissolution from ores containing 0.6 to 20 pounds of mercury per ton of ore, Treatment time ranged from 1 to 7 hours in 4-to 20-percent sodium chloride solutions, and power consumption was in the range of 10 to 50 kilowatt-hours per ton of ore. Pilot mill experiments in a 100-to 200-pound-per-hour extraction plant have been in progress to quantify power and reagent requirements. These data will be reported in a subsequent publication.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the concentration characteristics of high-clay sylvinite ores from potash companies operating in the Permian basin near Carlsbad, N. Mex. These ores, containing 14 to 19 percent K20 and 3 to 5 percent clay slimes, cannot be effectively processed by current commercial flotation methods because of their high clay content. A solution to this problem was shown to be the use of two-stage moderate scrubbing conditions for clay disaggregation and removal as opposed to strenuous attritioning. Bench-scale beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation from the scrubbed material resulted in acceptable product grades and recoveries. By using a coarse grind, emphasis was placed on production of premium granular and coarse products. Flotation results showed that concentrates of 59.6 to 60.4 percent K.0 values can be obtained. Continuous pilot plant beneficiation techniques for recovering potash minerals by flotation resulted in concentrates containing 58.8 to 59.8 percent K20 with recoveries of 69.7 to 81.4 percent of the K20.

A significant risk factor in assessing and modeling potential catastrophic slope movement in open-pit mines is the presence of argillic alteration in host rocks. High-resolution hyperspectral imagery operating in the visible to shortwave infrared can be a useful tool for identifying and mapping potentially dangerous argillic zones. We have conducted preliminary experiments with a new type of hyperspectral imager that employs an acousto-optic tunable filter, a variable retardation plate and a standard digital camera. The instrument we tested operates in the .5-1.0 micrometer range. A shortwave infrared instrument is planned, and mid-infrared instruments have been designed. An AOTF consists of an acoustic transducer that generates an acoustic wave that propagates through an attached crystalline substance. The wave sinusoidally modulates the refractive index of the crystal, selectively diffracting incident light according to its wavelength. The instrument also measures polarization signatures of reflecting surfaces as well as their spectral properties, opening up new areas of possible research. Images can be acquired and processed at 30 frames/second. The AOTF camera system offers numerous advantages to geologists. It can be used as an airborne imager or as a portable field device to image pit walls, outcrops, rock specimens or drill core. It can be adapted to image polished sections under a microscope, and it could be used in underground workings. Algorithms can produce processed images in real time (e.g., ratio images), and, because it is a camera system, aerial images can be orthorectified.

2, Survey of Representative Group of Metal and Non-mental Mines Before proceeding to develop and analyze Emergency Escape System Guidelines, it was necessary to obtain a broad range of information, including both fact and opinion. Although there were many areas to consider, the surveys had three primary goals 1. To determine the current state of underground escapeway planning and execution in American, metal and non-metal mines. 2. To determine, for a wide range of mining conditions, what difficulties can be encountered in complying with present and proposed escapeway regulatory standards. 3. To determine what improvements could be made and what equipment and technology was available to aid in implementing these improvements. To accomplish these goals, three major surveys were undertaken¬ 1. Survey of MESA and State Mining officials, discussed in Section 2. 1. 2. Survey of representative U S metal and non-metal mines, discussed in Section 2. 2. 3. Survey of manufacturers supplying equipment, primarily hoisting, suitable for use in escape systems, the product information which was obtained is discussed in Section 7.

This paper is one of a series on mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. In April 19.74 the St. Joseph Lead Co., at Atlanta, Elmore County, Idaho, was mining and milling about 225 tons of gold ore daily with a total force of 150 men. The mine, which comprises the old Boise-Rochester and Monarch properties, is at an elevation of about 6,000 feet. Snow lies on the ground about 5 months each year but does net interfere greatly with local operations. However, the road to Mountain Home, the shipping point 80 miles distant, passes over a high range and usually is closed by snow from about November 15 to June 15. Heavy supplies are brought in and concentrates trucked out during the summer. In winter the district is served by a biweekly mail plane and a passenger and express plane making 4 to 6 trips weekly. Mine timber is cut locally. A plentiful supply of water is obtained from a stream brought to the property through 7,500 feet of plume.

This paper describes field and laboratory investigations conducted on a dust-collection system recently designed for integral use with a continuous mining machine. The results of the field study showed that the average respirable dust concentration measured at the machine operator's position was reduced by about 60 percent (from 8.7 to 3.5 milligrams per cubic meter), and total and respirable dust concentrations in the return air were reduced by approximately 70 percent. The data indicated that approximately 20 percent of the dust generated at the face was not passed through the scrubber. The lab-oratory results showed that the overall efficiency (by particle count) was approximately 80 percent for total dust concentrations (minus 20 micrometers in size) typical of those encountered underground. Calculations based on total dust concentrations measured during the underground study indicated that the respirable mass concentrations of the effluent from the scrubber would still exceed acceptable levels even if scrubbing of all the air at the face were possible.

The transportation of any commodity which is actually or potentially a source of fire or explosion, has been made safe, insofar as humanly possible, by rigid requirements as to inspection mechanical safety devices, and by printed labels. For the most part these precautions have been sufficient. This is evident when it is considered that in the thousands of instances in which commodities with a great fire risk have been transported, few disasters have occurred. This paper deals with the recent gasoline explosion which occurred at Memphis, Tennessee. At 7:50 a.m. January 24, 1921, vapors from a tan: car of gasoline became ignited and resulted in a blast that killed eleven people and badly injured nineteen others. Probably forty or fifty men, women, and children received slight injuries from falling debris or from burns. The explosion wrecked an oil plant, leveled a block of frame buildings, and broke window panes within a radius of five blocks.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines describing methods and costs of mining and preparing sand and gravel for market at various plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Clowdy plant, with which this paper deals, is located 7 miles west of Dallas, Tex., and has a rail connection with the Texas and Pacific Railway. In addition to the rail outlet there is a paved road over which materials produced at this plant can be moved into Dallas by truck.

The Bureau of Mines determined minimum energies for direct initiation of expanding gaseous detonation waves in acetylene-oxygen mixtures. Composition limit ranges for the initiation of detonation with fixed energies have been compared to data in the literature. Assuming that the stored electrical energy is completely converted to thermal energy, the agreement between the energy of primary explosive initiators and the energy of electrical discharge initiators was good. Minimum energies for initiation of detonation in the most sensitive composition (40 percent C20 plus 60 percent 0 2) were: 0.64 joule at an initial pressure of 1/4 atmosphere, 5.0X10-2 joule at 1/2 atmos¬phere, and 3.7X10-3 joule at I atmosphere. Fuel concentrations in mixtures initiated to detonation by 4.9X102 joules ranged from 10 to 65 percent C2H2 at 1/4 atmosphere, 10 to 67 percent C2H2 at 1/2 atmosphere, and 9 to 68 percent C2H2 at 1 atmosphere.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."

This report has presented a literature review of explosion proof¬ing of coal mine electrical equipment. The international "state-of¬the-art" is an extremely difficult definition to quantify but, from the preceding paragraphs, it is evident the international community be¬lieves that it is represented by the International Electrotechnical Commission's Publications. Five questions were set forth during the beginning of this report. Each will be evaluated in light of the preceding discussion. 1. Can Schedule 2G specifications on explosion-proof containers be substantiated? Literature was found in the three main problem areas, surface temperature, mechanical strength, and explosion transmission, to determine this. Surface temperature requirements are adequate except for equipment that can normally overload, and the required intern¬al pressure does afford some margin of safety. However, in terms of safety, gap dimensions are about ten times smaller than that needed. 2. Is it possible to replace the Schedule's design requirements with performance specifications? Two primary areas were determined as mechanical strength and explosion transmission. As was mentioned, for present flange and gap standards, the 150 psig requirement is adequate. Furthermore, it is the authors' opinion that the level cannot be re¬duced if the present gap requirements are retained. The Schedule now requires that 16 tests be run, but the literature suggests that only from three to six examinations are necessary. Provide reasonably priced, reliable fire protection for loading shovels. Approach An automatic fire, sensing and suppression system using both dry chemical and Halon 1301 was developed. It is more rugged than similar industrial-type fire protection systems. How It Works Temperature sensors detect heat from a fire, and trigger the system. These sensors are located inside the machinery house and under the house and shovel frame where it rotates around the crawler chassis ring gear. An alarm is sounded, and extinguishing agents are released either in the machinery house or in the ring gear area. The system can also be triggered by a manual control. If the fire Is detected in the machinery house, all power is shut down to the motor-generator sets, ventilation fan, and all electrical controls. Doors are automatically closed. After a delay to allow time for the ventilation fan to stop, Halon 1301, a gaseous fire extinguishing agent, is released inside the machinery house until it reaches a concentration of about 7 percent. This concentration is sufficient to extinguish a fire, but isn't toxic to personnel

Although local conditions at each mining property affect the percentage of increase in drilling speed for a given reduction in gage of bit, the results of drilling tests conducted at the Mount Weather testing adit show such a large advantage in favor of the smaller gages that they should be indicative of the possibilities at most mines. GENERAL DISCUSSION Although it is common knowledge among miners that drilling speed ill- creases with reduction in gage of bit, the large amount o this increase is not so universally realized, A recent Bureau of Mines4/ survey of drilling practices in 28 metal mines showed that the maximum gage of starters is 3 inches and that at 50 percent of the mines starters are 2-1/4 inches or larger, Because this size appears too large for conditions at most' mines where abrasion is moderate and where powder distribution permits, the use of smaller bits presents a favorable opportunity for reducing drilling costs.

Reduce respirable dust in coal preparation plants. Approach Survey a representative sample of coal preparation plants to (1) determine the dust problem extent, and (2) evaluate practical dust control techniques. Coal Preparation Plant Survey Results Of the approximately 500 coal preparation plants in the United States, 18 plants in six States were randomly selected for survey. The raw hourly capacities ranged from 250 to 1,250 tons, plant construction dates ranged from 1037 to 1982, and usually 3 to 10 workers were required per shift. Respirable dust concentrations within the plants surveyed ranged from very good (less than 1 mg/m') to very poor (14 mg/m3). No relationship was found between dust concentration and age or capacity of the plant. Six of the plants had long-term respirable dust concentrations between 7 and 14 mg/m' in specific areas; six had concentrations between 2.2 and 6.2 mg/m'. Except fur ventilation, only 4 of the 18 plants used operating dust control devices with mixed effectiveness.

ROCK BEHAVIOR has proved of national interest in a variety of fields. The behavior of rock consequent to a nuclear blast was used to detect such blasts, as criteria for the design of underground military defense installations that would resist nuclear blasts, and for judging the feasibility for peaceful uses of nuclear explosives. An obvious peaceful application of nuclear explosives would be for large-scale rock excavation, and plans were presented during the year to improve the present Panama Canal or create a new canal by this method. These plans were based largely on earlier crater tests that demonstrated rock behavior when subjected to a buried nuclear blast. A knowledge of rock behavior under impact was used to evaluate the materials of the moon by means of the geometric configurations visible in the close-up pictures of the moon surface taken by the U.S. rocket Ranger 7. The composition of the moon must be considered in devising methods for taking samples of the surface layers or in designing underground shelters as bases for future explorations of the moon.

During 1981, the U.S. Bureau of Mines and U.S. Geological Survey conducted a mineral resource survey of the 6,400 acre (15,800 ha) Lincoln Creek RARE II area (No. 5983) in the Toiyabe National Forest (fig. 1). Samples of outcrops and stream channels contained no significant amounts of economic minerals. A radioactive deposit in a pegmatite dike occurs 1.25 mi (2.02 kin) southeast of the study area, hut similiar deposits have not been discovered within the area boundary. No coal or deposits were found.

The mining laws of Russia (Collection of Laws, vol. 7, 1912) are still in force in Latvia. The Free State of Latvia (declared independent on November 8, 1918) is composed chiefly of the Baltic Provinces of the former Russian Empire, which are ethnographically Lettish: The Province of Courland, four districts of the Province of Livonia, and three districts of the Province of Vitebsk. Since the establishment of its independence, Latvia has not felt the need of a special mining law, inasmuch as mining so far has not been found profitable in that country. A supplement to this paper, entitled "Mineral Resources," is a brief summary of the minerals found and utilized in latvia. RIGHTS OF FOREIGNERS A foreign individual is permitted to explore for minerals and to own and operate mines in Latvia on equal terms with Latvians. A foreign corporation is required to establish a branch in Latvia, which shall be subject to the corporation laws of the country. A certain number of the partners or incorporators must be citizens of Latvia.

The flammability of trichloroethylene vapors in air has been determined in a 7-inch cyclindrical vessel. Saturated flammable mixtures were formed with air at atmospheric pressure between 30° C (86° F) and 82° C (180° F); the trichloroethylene concentrations at these temperatures are 12.5 (lower) and 90 (upper) volume-percent, respectively. Further study is necessary to assess the effects of different variables on the flammability of this material. INTRODUCTION Trichloroethylene (TCE) (ClHC = CCl2), sold under various trade names (Blacosolv, Perm-A-Clor, Tri, Triad, Triclene, Trivec, Tromex, Vapoclean, Vapoclor, Westrosol, etc.), is an important industrial chemical. A summary of its physical and chemical properties is given in table 1. It is used to degrease metals, leather, and textiles, to extract residual oils from vegetable oil cakes, for dry cleaning, and in soap. It is a powerful solvent for fats, resins, bitumens, rubber, sulfur, and phosphorus. Several explosions in which trichloroethylene was involved prompted an investigation by the Bureau of Mines to determine the conditions under which such accidents can occur.
