This Bureau of Mines report examines the percentage depletion allowance rate structure in relation to several criteria that are indicative of U.S. mineral import dependence. These criteria are the minerals considered as strategic and critical for stockpiling purposes, the ratio of reserves to forecast cumulative demand (1976-2000) for selected minerals, and the U.S. net import reliance as a percentage of apparent consumption (1978), also for selected minerals in general, it was Found that there does exist a direct, although not perfect, relationship between the percentage depletion allowance rates and the degree of import dependence as indicated by these three criteria. The higher percentage rates tend to he associated with those minerals for which the United States is, or will likely he, heavily dependent on foreign sources. In addition, a basic discussion of the mineral depletion allowance is provided, including numerical examples illustrating the computation of the allowance under several assumptions. Also, the percentage depletion allowance rates for individual minerals are tabulated.

The Bureau of Mines subjected three commercially available brands of transformer fluid to a series of combustion studies. The experiments were conducted in the intermediate-scale fire tunnel, which was designed to simulate environmental conditions in underground mines. The work was divided into three phases. In phase one, the brands were compared for gas production, smoke characteristics, and combustion yields. In phase two, the production constants of transformer fluids and other fuels were compared for the rate of formation of gas and smoke as a function of fire size. In phase three, several diameters of liquid-pool fires were compared in terms of fire size and burning rate. These transformer fluid measurements will be added to the existing coal and wood data that can be used as a basis of comparison for future studies of other mine combustibles. Further research into the combustion product emissions from combustible materials found in underground mines will lead to improved and realistic fire detection and suppression systems,

In a recent report3/ the authors presented a rapid method of calculating, by means of a desk calculator, the future performance of oil reservoirs in which the motivating agent was gas. The accuracy of the method was tested by data obtained from an electronic computer. Because of the accuracy obtained for the limited number of calculations performed, considerable interest has been expressed in the electronic computer program used to obtain the comparative data by an analytical solution. Accordingly, the computer procedures for the analytical solution are presented in this report. In an earlier report, 4/ a reservoir appraisal procedure was published in which an iterative method was used. Many requests were received for the computer program used to obtain the values given in that paper. That program, with some modifications, also is presented in this report. The modifications are given because of the progress that his been made in computers, and because much of the program for the analytical solution is usable for the iterative procedure.

"INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A mineral survey of the 520-acre Quigg West Wilderness Study Area (MT-074-155) was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1986 at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is in Granite County in western Montana about 16 miles northwest of Phillipsburg and 27 mi les northeast of Hamilton, MT. Stony Mountain, a study area on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service, is about 1 mile to the south-southwest and was studied concurrently. No mineral resources were identified in the Quigg West Wilderness Study Area, but high grade gold assays, as much as 1.24 ounce gold per ton, were obtained at the one prospect found. Samples from four workings contained significant gold; minor silver, molybdenum, and copper were also present. The prospect containing the narrow and discontinuous gold-bearing quartz vein straddles the south boundary of the Wilderness Study Area. The shear zone containing the vein projects toward the old Crescent mine, about 4.5 miles to the south, which shows a similar geologic structure.

"SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONSTests conducted at Mount Weather indicate that clear water is the best bit coolant and cuttings-removal medium for diamond drilling. All of the mediums tested did show that drilling speed increased when drilling with the faster feed ratios (greatest pressure on the bits). In no case, how¬ever, did the increased drilling speed amount to over 16 percent, and even in a long hole the slight increase in drilling speed would be more than offset by the extra time consumed in setting up.Bit wear was excessive when lubricating agents were used, the most footage per bit was obtained when drilling with clear water in the normal manner, and the next best footage was obtained when drilling with circulated water containing no lubricating agent. The diamonds showed little or no wear in any of the bits, and all bits cut well throughout the tests. They were only taken out of service when erosion of the cast metal had progressed to the point where the diamonds were about to roll out. The lubricating agents evidently hold some of the cuttings in suspension, which in turn help to cut the rock but also wear the metal of the bit.No hard-matrix bits were tested, and it is possible that one or more of the lubricating agents might increase the efficiency of such a bit by keeping it sharp and doing away with the necessity of sharpening by sand blasting. Some tests are planned with hard-matrix-type bits and the same lubricating agents used in the tests under discussion, but it is realized that any drilling advantage gained by the bits sharpening themselves may but at least partly offset by excessive wear of the Pump parts."

This report summarizes cost data accumulated during 15 months of sustained operation of the Bureau of Mines Boulder City (Nev.) titanium plant, which had a capacity of about 1,350 pounds of titanium sponge per day. The plant was constructed during the 1952 fiscal year with funds supplied by the Ordnance Corps, Department of the Army. Its original purpose was to engage in process development work as a continuing phase of the Bureau of Mines policy to seek improvements in producing titanium metal. In early 1953 the Defense Materials Procurement Agency contracted with the Bureau of Mines for producing approximately one-half million pounds of usable ductile titanium sponge. Production began in May 1953, ended in September 1954, and yielded 492,503 pounds of acceptable metal. Operating costs covering this period of operation, with suggested depreciation and administrative costs, are given, as well as outlines of building and equipment capital costs. In addition, miscellaneous economic considerations are discussed, including labor and operating-time schedules.

Mining men and State officials in their efforts to make mining safer are confronted from time to time with various complicated questions . In recent years these questions have tended to increase with the use of mechanical appliances . Twenty- five years ago electricity had hardly been used in mines . To - day there is practically no other means of transmitting energy employed in American mines , except in metal mines where compressed air is used for drilling and small portable hoists . In coal mines there has been a great increase in mechanization and a tendency to concentrate the mining operation , which has resulted in attendant difficulties of ventilation and intensified the danger of coal - dust in bituminous and subbituminous mines . The answers to the questions which arise are not always obvious , as is shown by the fact that even able , experienced men differ in their opinions of the best way to overcome a particular mining hazard . The difficulty of solving the problems is also demonstrated by the varying provisions in mine safety rules , both in official regulations and in the rules of those mining companies who are endeavoring to do more than follow the letter of the law . Such differences of opinion on the best way of meeting a difficult situation are often found within the same mining organization , and so it has been in the Bureau of Mines .

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Mines, has been conducting minerals recovery research in support of the nation's geothermal program since 1974. The Bureau's program of laboratory and field studies has focused on determining the materials of construction for geothermal resource recovery plants and an the recovery of mineral values from the geobrines. An analytical program has been conducted at the Avondale Research Center to determine the chemical constituents of some high- and low-salinity geobrines found in the Imperial, Valley of California. Data are reported for the early stages of brine production of femur geothermal wells--the low-salinity, medium-enthalpy brines from the East Mesa Known Geothermal Resource Area (KGRA), Mesa 6-1 and 6-2, and the high-salinity, high-enthalpy brine from the Salton Sea KGRA, Magmamax 1 and Woolsey 1. The reported results indicate the importance of the operating and engineering history, the operating parameters during sampling, and the method of sampling in order to evaluate the chemical analyses.

The Bureau of Mines oil-shale program, initiated in April 1944, is concerned with the future utilization of oil shale in the United States as a source of liquid fuel. One phase of this program is the accumulation of information on the location, extent, and richness of oil-shale deposits that may be suitable for processing to oil and related products. A previous publication5/ presented, by means of logs, the oil yields of sections of the largest known oil-shale deposit in this country -the shales of the Green River formation occurring in adjoining portions of the states of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. This present supplementary report presents the oil yields of cores from 48 holes drilled during 1952 to 1954 in the Green River formation of Colorado, which is distributed over an area of more than 1,000 square miles. The oil yields of the 48 oil-shale sections, involving the assay of 9,651 samples, representing 22,451 feet of core, are presented by means of logs. In addition, the oil yields of samples comprising the maximum sections of 15 gallon-per-ton shale are tabulated for these cores and for the 28 cores from Colorado which were logged in the previous report.

This report documents the work performed and the results obtained during the field demonstration of the Remote Sealing System at the USBM's Jenny Mine near Inez, KY in the Fall of 1978. Although various portions of the Remote Sealing System had been used on a number of prior occasions, the field demonstration at Jenny Mine marked the first use of the complete upgraded system including the use of the inert gas generating system for seal placement and the first application of the new froth foam system. The objective of the field demonstration at Jenny Mine was to demonstrate the complete system by emplacing and evaluating several complete underground seals under conditions representing those of a mine fire situation. Several critical sealing conditions were identified including: ? High entry airflow ? Standing water (1 to 2 ft) in the entry ? Flowing water (150 gal/min) ? Irregular roof ? Sealing a 4-way intersection. Four seals were successfully placed under the conditions mentioned above. The demonstration served to verify proposed techniques to handle these conditions as well as to dispel any doubts about the system's capabilities. As a result of the successful field demonstration, the Remote Sealing Equipment is now under the jurisdiction of MSHA's Mine Emergency Operation ready for a mine fire emergency.

Other devices are used in a special instance, also but in any cause the electrical methods produce a current that is an electrical counterpart of the mechanical motion, and the motion can then be studied by direct measurements of the current or by recording the current on suitable recording meters or oscillography. Mechanical methods are used in some instance but are generally not as convenient nor as flexible as the optical and electrical methods."

"IntroductoryThe common practice of the petroleum industry is to measure viscosity by the use of instruments of the efflux or capillary tube type. The Saybolt universal viscosimeter has been tentatively adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials and is used extensively in the United States.Several instruments of foreign origin are also more or less familiar, such as the Redwood, the Engier, and the Baroey.Effina-type viscosimeters are well adapted to the ordinary needs of petroleum testing laberatories as they are simple and rugged in construction and away to manipulate, even in the hands of operators lacking scientific training. They have, however, certain limitations and for certain spacial types of work there are notable advantages incident to the use of the so-called torsion types of type of viacosimeter. The most satisfactory type of torsion viscosimeter now available in the market some to be that of MacMchael, which has been discussed in detail in a recent paper (Herschel, W. H., The MacMichael Torsional Viscosimeter. Jour. of Int. and Eng. Chem., vol. 12, 1920, pp. 282-286). The present paper indicates conditions under which this viscosimeter may be used to advantage in the petroleum laboratory, and outlines simple methods of operation and calibration."

As part of remote sensing research on an abandoned mine lands (AML) site in the Colorado Springs, Colorado area, a geographic information system (GIS) database was generated. This GIS database contains information on the locations and extents of abandoned underground coal mines, the geology of the area, subsidence features and degrees of subsidence risk, topography, drill hole locations, and lineaments (linear features) related to subsurface geologic structures. A GIS database allows the reproducible and accurate comparison and analysis of any data sets which geographically overlap and are within the same coordinate system. The database has been released to the public domain so that government agencies, researchers, educators, and the general public can access this coherent database for the purposes of better understanding the study area and GIS technology. Data files and maps are available in formats that are compatible with the GIS software used in the research project and with most CAD systems so that as many people as possible can make use of the majority of the database. This document serves as the data dictionary for the database by providing descriptions and origins of the data files.

The equilibrium relationship of hafnium and tantalum was studied to facilitate alloy and property investigations . The data obtained are presented graphically as the equilibrium diagram . Alloys were prepared from high - purity components by nonconsumabletungsten- electrode arc melting . Data for the equilibrium diagram were obtained by optical pyrometry , metallography , X- ray diffraction of heat treated specimens , X- ray diffraction using a high- temperature camera , and differential thermal analysis . During the investigations , a casting apparatus was constructed , and the existing melting - point apparatus was improved . The bcc allotrope of hafnium forms a continuous series of solid solutions , called beta , with tantalum which exhibit a minimum melting point at 20 wt pct tantalum and 2,110 ° C. At 24 wt pct tantalum and 1,050 ° C , hafnium- rich beta decomposes in a monotectoid reaction to yield alpha and tantalum- rich beta . The monotectoid isotherm extends from 5.5 to 60 wt pct tantalum . The twophase region , in which hafnium- rich and tantalum- rich beta solid solutions are immiscible , rises to a maximum temperature of 1,265 ° C at 38 wt pct tantalum . The solubility of hafnium in tantalum decreases from 40 wt pct at the monotectoid temperature to 20 wt pct at 750 ° C.

Mountain bumps have been a problem in the coal-mining industry since the 1920's. The problem became severe in the late 40's and early 50's with the introduction of mechanized mining. Fatalities and serious injuries resulted from mountain bumps during this period. Mountain bumps again caused fatalities in the 80 's. Interviews were conducted mostly with retired coal miners having experience in bump conditions with five different coal companies. These men held positions as president, general manager, roof-control specialist, mining engineer, inspector, superintendent, mine foreman, shift foreman, section foreman, miner operator, electrician, and general laborer. Together, their comments give a good idea of the things tried to mitigate mountain bumps in the Appalachian Coal Fields.

A previous report4 has explained that pipe lines for the transmission of natural gas should be buried to minimize temperature fluctuations because when excessive the latter decrease accuracy in measuring gas volume and increase leakage of gas due to expansion and contraction in the pipe joints. These effects are governed by the rapidity of the temperature fluctuations and by the total variation over a period of time. The temperature of gas flowing through a pipe line depends to a large extent, upon the temperature of the ground adjacent to the pipe; hence, fluctuation of the ground temperatures at various depths determines the economic depth at which pipe lines should be buried. Scope and Purpose of Report This report covers a record of the daily atmospheric temperature fluctuations at Bartlesville, Okla., for 12 months and a-similar concurrent record of the temperature variation 1, 2, 3, and 4 feet below the surface of the ground.

A knowledge of the mechanics of wave propagation through the earth is essential if reliable communication systems are to be designed for coal mine environments. To obtain a reliable basis from which accurate propagation predictions could be drawn, a series of theoretical studies have been prepared for the US Bureau of Mines by Mr. Ramsay Decker of Spectra Associates, Inc. through a subcontract with Collins Radio Group. These reports formulate the analytical techniques from which we may derive frequencies and antenna configurations that yield the optimum signal-to-noise ratios over the greatest distances in mine environments. The reports of sections 2 and 4 deal with analytical techniques for determining the signal-to- noise ratio within a mine environment for loop-to-loop and line source-to-loop antenna con- figurations. The analytical results of these reports were then implemented into computer programs to obtain predictions concerning through-the-earth signal propagation. These preliminary predictions are based on noise data compiled by Bensema, Maxwell and Stone, and WVU prior to the extensive research conducted by the National Bureau of Standards (NBS). These initial measurements indicated a 20- to 30-dB lower noise level than that measured recently by NBS. The recent NBS data is that used by Collins in the final predictions. Aqueous C12-02 leaching procedures developed by the Bureau of Mines to produce zinc chloride from zinc sulfide bulk concentrates were effective in extracting 99 pct of the zinc and 97 pet of the silver contained in samples of massive seafloor sulfides from the southern Juan de Fuca Ridge. Zinc sulfide (sphalerite and wurtzite) mineralization comprised 55 and 88 pct of two specimens provided by the U.S. Geological Survey for this study. Minor occurrences of galena, chalcopyrite, and other minerals in the sulfides permitted the recovery of pregnant liquors that were low in metal values other than zinc, which were successfully purified by a two-step cementation procedure using zinc dust.
