"The last previous Bureau of Mines publication relative to details of permissible electric mine lamps is Bulletin 332, which describes 16 lamps approved prior to May 1930. Some of the lamps have become obsolete through the development of improved models which, with several new types, make it desirable to supplement the Bureau's published data relative to permissible electric mine lamps.In the following descriptions, lamps approved since May 1930 and prior to July 1, 1935, are placed in the three following groups: (1) Electric cap lamps, (2) electric hand lamps, and (3) lamps for miscellaneous applications,ELECTRIC CAP LAMPS APPROVED UNDER SCHEDULE 6B1. Edison model J lamp, approval no. 24. - The features that distinguish this lamp from earlier models of Edison electric cap lamps are:(a) The battery consists of two F-2 cells of square cross section and about 1-1/4 inches higher than M-14 cells in the model H lamp, making the battery narrower and higher than any of the earlier models of Edison cap lamps.(b) The cells are insulated from each other and the Monel-metal casing by enclosure in vulcanized-rubber baglike enclosures. Both cell terminals are insulated from the cell jar.(c) The battery is equipped with rubber-tube Bunsen-valve-type gas vents.(d) The battery casing is secured by a new-type magnetic lock.(e.) The battery and cover terminal clips have been redesigned to give a wiping contact."

In laboratory tests using reconstructed soil columns, rubber latex showed good sealing efficiency when applied at a rate equivalent to 4000-5000 pounds per acre. Results of field testing, however, were inconclusive. The ideal situation in which latex would coagulate in a narrow zone two to three feet below the surface by reacting with acidic or metallic constituents of the soil was not attained. Rather, the latex was deposited progressively as it passed through the soil (most of it remained in the top foot), the rate of deposition being dependent on soil structure and composition as well as on properties of the latex such as particle size and emulsion stability. Latex stability appears to be a more critical property than latex particle size in controlling penetration. Addition of excess anionic or nonionic surfactants to latex improved its penetration into the soil. A styrene-butadiene (SBR) rubber latex of 2400 Å average particle size with high mechanical stability gave the best balance of penetrating ability and sealing capacity in laboratory tests and this was confirmed in tests on a 5 x 5 foot test plot at Lanse, Pennsylvania. This latex was subsequently applied to three one-quarter-acre plots at Lanse by sprinkler irrigation, and compared to adjacent areas that were sprinkled with water only. Soil moisture measurements did not enable us to judge the effectiveness of the seal because differences between sampling positions were greater than differences between treated and untreated sections, but permeability tests showed that water flow was much slower (90-99% reduction) within the top ten inches of soil in the latex- treated sections. This sealing effectiveness was reduced after wintering. There was no deleterious effect on the vegetation as a result of sprinkling the areas with latex. A laboratory study conducted in a 5 x 5 x 5 foot box containing uniform reconstructed soil from a New Jersey source suggests that latex penetration into the soil in the field occurs mainly through natural macro openings and not through the capillaries of the soil structure. Dilute solutions of ammonium hydroxide or sodium carbonate (with no latex present) were found to seal effectively in laboratory soil columns as well as in field applications. However, since these chemicals are water soluble, the seal is temporary. Raw material costs of latex at the application rates used in the field testing are in the order of $1000 per acre. The West Pioneer RARE II study area, No. 1-006 (fig. 1), has Figure 1.--NEAR HERE a high molybdenum resource potential. Two molybdenum-bearing areas are being explored by Utah International and by Cyprus-Moly Corp, Inc. using geophysical exploration and diamond core drilling. The study area also contains potential resources of gold and silver at six prospects: the Bear Paw (Ibex), Black Bear, Coeur d'Alene, Franklin No. 1, Martin, and Maynard. In addition, the Black Rear and the Martin contain possible copper, lead, and molybdenum resources. Most of the workings are caved.

The Bureau of Mines recorded both particle accelerations and velocities from one-stick and production blasts at Eagle-Picher Industries' Shullsburg mine, Shullsburg, Wis., to test the effectiveness of square root scaling in grouping underground blast vibrations and to determine the effects of rock type and mine geometry on blast vibrations. Although the charge weights of subsequent delay periods sometimes exceeded the charge weight of the zero-delay period, both acceleration and velocity records showed that the zero-delay portion of the Shullsburg production blasts produced the highest vibration amplitudes. Because of the restricted range of charge weights in the Shullsburg experiments, no statistical determination of an appropriate scaling factor could be made. However, the square root scaled peak particle velocity data from the Shullsburg production blasts grouped well within the approximate band-width of vibration data obtained by the Bureau from quarry blasts in many different rock types. This indicates that scaling by some factor, perhaps the square root or cube root of the charge weight, may be an effective way to group and study vibration data from underground blasts. Further research is needed to determine which scaling factor is best for underground blasting.

"During the calendar year 1925 the Bureau of Mines received from the operators of several hundred mines and quarries complete accident records covering deaths, permanent disabilities, and “lost time” temporary injuries. Some of the companies, - those that participated in the National Safety Competition-also furnished information showing the number of man-hours of work performed during the year. With these two types of information it was possible to calculate the accident-frequency and accident-severity rates of the different plants. Complete and comparable reports of accidents and Man-hours of “exposure” were received from 34 underground metal mines, 59 underground coal mines, 15 underground mines producing other nonmetallic minerals, and 102 open quarries or open-pit mines. The figures in the table appended to this report show the accident severity rates and other data for each of the 34 underground metal mines and for the group as a whole. It is proposed to publish similar figures for the other classes of mines and quarries at an early date.The 34 metal mines listed in the table are situated in Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota., and Utah; they employed 5, 925 men, an average of 174 men per mine, including employees above-ground as well as underground. With but few exceptions, 50 men was the minimum number of employees in any mine. The total period of employment or “exposure” at the 34 mines was 14,612,607 man-hours, an average of 2,466 hours per man, or the equivalent of 308 work-days of eight hours for each employee. Accidents resulted in 15 fatalities, 9 permanent disabilities, and 1,950 temporary “lost time” injuries (causing disability exceeding remainder of shift). The fatal and nonfatal injuries represented 132,575 days of disability. Thus the accident frequency rate for the group was 135 accidents per million hours and the accident severity rate was 9.073 days lost per thousand hours of 1 “exposure”. The severity rates ranged from 0.227 to 88.653, while the ·range of the accident-frequency rates was from 16. 6 to 307 .4. In compiling the accident severity rates shown in the table, all accidents caused by explosives were weighted at twice the number of days actually lost, as one of the purposes of the National Safety Competition was to stress the prevention of accidents caused by explosives."

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay and shale mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, it is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed to consider operating costs. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shale ensue. The open-pit recovery of clay and shale is a comparatively simple operation in comparison with underground mining; nevertheless, it represents an appreciable factor in the cost of manufacture.

"These proceedings consist of papers presented at a Bureau of Mines Technology Transfer Seminar on postdisaster survival and rescue research. Several seminars are held each year to bring the latest results of Bureau research to the attention of the mining industry as quickly as possible.INTRODUCTIONThe postdisaster research program is directed toward research and development of technology and equipment that increases the chances of a miner surviving or being rescued after an underground mine disaster. A disaster is an accident of major proportions, and it may result in the entrapment of miners whose normal egress from the mine is cut off. This often necessitates a rescue operation and a means of keeping the trapped miners alive while they await rescue. The Bureau is currently pursuing research to develop the technology that will enhance the ability of miners to survive such an occurrence. The research is divided into two basic problem areas, survival and rescue. Both areas are concerned with the inability of miners and rescue teams to cope with the postaisaster environment, such as toxic gases, unstable roof conditions, water flooding, and lack of oxygen. In addition, research is also conducted to find ways of locating and quickly reaching trapped miners. Most of the research conducted by the Bureau has been directed toward the postdisaster problems associated with coal mines. However, most of the research results are also applicable to noncoal mines as well.The papers presented in these proceedings address some of the recent research conducted by the Bureau of Mines that has been directed toward the postdisaster problems outlined above. The topics covered range from an overview of the technology developed for oxygen selfrescuers to training programs for mine rescue. Any questions or comments pertaining to this research are encouraged and appreciated. The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory-scale beneficiation tests on a sample of corundum gneiss from Montana to devise a method for beneficiating corundum for use as a substitute for refractory-grade bauxite. A flotation process utilizing petroleum sulfonate as the collector in an acid circuit was devised. Results showed that two flotation schemes each produced a concentrate exceeding the national stockpile specifications for calcined bauxite. From a feed containing 28 pct corundum concentrates containing up to 92.5 pct alumina (A1203) were produced with a corundum recovery of 78.5 pct.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 6,022-acre Spring Basin Wilderness Study Area (OR-005-009) in order to evaluate its mineral resources. The study area is in Wheeler County about 13 miles southwest of Fossil, Oregon. No mineral resources were identified. The area is underlain by volcanic flows, domes and sediments ranging in composition from olivine basalt to rhyolite of the Clarno and John Day Formations. There are three mining claims in the study area, all apparently located for lapidary material. Samples of agate were of poor quality. Four of 13 alluvial samples, two inside and two adjacent to the area, contained gold; content ranged from 0.0000097 to 0.00416 troy ounce per cubic yard. About 23 percent of the Wilderness Study Area is covered by oil and gas lease applications.

The heats of formation of anhydrous cadmium sulfate, cobalt sulfate, copper sulfate, nickel sulfate, and zinc sulfate were determined by hydrochloric acid solution calorimetry. The values at 298.15° K for formation from the metal, rhombic sulfur, and oxygen gas follow (cal/mole): CdS04J -222.0 ± 0.3; CoS04, -212.0 ± 0.4; CuS04) -183.4 ± 0.6; NiS04, -208.1 ± 0.2; and ZnS04, -233.1 ± 0.2. Corresponding heats of decomposition to form the metal oxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen were derived from these results; heats of decomposition to form the metal oxide and sulfur trioxide were also derived.

The Bureau of Mines determined the kinetics of the reaction of titanium-iron alloys with titanium trichloride dissolved in sodium chloride to provide a basis for understanding the reactions occurring in metallurgical processes involving reduction of the metal halides or alloy refining in fused salts. The rate of the heterogeneous reaction was determined between titanium-iron alloys and titanium trichloride to elucidate the effects of alloy composition on the rate. Measurements were made in an inert atmosphere with a high-temperature thermobalance using high-purity reactants. The rates of the reactions were about 1 x 10-5 g Ti/cm2-sec, and the reaction was phase-boundary controlled. Titanium alloys of the body-centered cubic beta structure reacted faster than those with the hexagonal close-packed alpha structure. The inter-metallic compound, TiFe, reacted very slowly, whereas TiFe2 was inert. Alloys containing above 89 atomic percent iron gained weight by reacting with titanium species in the salt solution and depositing titanium in the alloy. The effect of TiCl3 concentration on the reaction rate was determined from 2 to 12 weight-percent TiC13 and at various alloy compositions. At high iron contents, above 50 atomic percent, the TiC13 concentration effect was small. At lower iron contents, the TiC13 concentration effect was greater for beta-crystalline alloys than for alpha-crystalline alloys. The temperature dependence of the reaction between titanium alloy containing 8.7 atomic percent iron and titanium trichloride was measured over the temperature range 1,062° to 1,220° K, and the energy of activation was 7.7 kilocalories for the reaction.

"INTRODUCTION The largest known deposits of ilmenite and rutile in Virginia are in Amherst and Nelson Counties. Other deposits occur in the State, but their extent is not known. One of the most promising of the latter is the deposit in Roanoke County on the T. M. Bush and the H. L. Hutchins property near Roanoke. A geophysical survey was made of the deposit, followed by core drilling. In April and May 1946, four holes were drilled, totaling 822 linear feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. The heat capacity of dimo1ybdenum carbide (Mo2C) was measured from 51° to 298° K, and the entropy at 298.15° K was evaluated. Heat content measurements above 298.15° It were conducted for dimolybdenum carbide (M0caY) and monotantalum carbide (TaC). The results were combined with known heats of formation and the 298.15° K entropy for TaC to obtain values of the heat and free energy of formation from 298.15° K to 1,400° K for MoaC and from 298.15°K to 1,800° K for TaC.

During 1990-1999, a total of 458 fires occurred in all coal mining categories; 157 of those fires caused 164 injuries and 2 fatalities. The greatest number of fues and fire injuries occurred at surface mines, whch also had the highest risk rate values. A total of 66 fuefighting interventions were required. Of these, there were 25 mine rescue team interventions in underground mines, including 5 mobile equipment firefighting interventions, and 41 fire brigade and fire department interventions at all surface operations, including 19 mobile equipment interventions. In all, 50 fires destroyed or heavily damaged equipment (including 16 pieces of mobile equipment) because of failure of other firefighting methods, late fire detection, undetected fires, or fire size. A total of 1 14 fires were detected late by smoke, and 42 fires were not detected.

The value of mica depends chiefly upon the size of the flat sheets into which it can be split and also upon whether it is clear or stained. Muscovite (white mica) and philogopite (amber mica) are the micas of commerce. Biotite (black mica) and other varieties are virtually unsalable. Vermiculite, an altered mica having the extraordinary property of expanding greatly when heated, preferably should not be classed commercially as mica. Mica is marketed as (1) cut or uncut block, (2) sheet, (3) splittings, and (4) wet or dry ground mica. In the United States, mica that will not yield flat films over about 1-1/2 inches square, or that is ruled, rumpled, or flawed in any way, can be sold only as scrap, its sole use being for making ground mica. Only sizes that will yield rectangles 1-1/2 by 2 inches or larger can be classed as sheet quality; slightly smaller sizes may be classed as punch, and under certain circumstances still smaller sizes, down to about 1 inch square, may be used for splittings, which are mostly a thousandth of an inch thick or even thinner. Splittings, however, are produced in large quantities only in British India, where labor costs very little. Even there the work is done mostly by children, who not only work cheaper but have a delicacy of touch that enables them to do the splitting faster and better. No mechanical process yet devised will permit ordinary splittings to be made economically in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines investigated gases from flash and laser irradiation of Pittsburgh seam (hvab) coal to determine the action of high temperatures on coal. Temperatures in excess of l,000° C were reached with both types of irradiation. Craters about 300 microns in diameter were produced in the coal with millisecond pulses from the laser unit rated at 1.7 joules' output. Gaseous products from laser and flash irradiations in vacuum contained 21 and 8 percent acetylene, respectively. Diacetylene, vinylacetylene, and other products to molecular weight 130 were indicated in the mass spectrum of the gas from the laser study. Single experiments were also conducted in which the laser energy, particle size of the coal, and atmosphere were varied. The results indicated that the distributions of products obtained from the flash and laser irradiations of coal were different from that produced in high-temperature carbonization.

The Mesabi iron district of Minnesota has a potential production of over 50 million tons of iron are annually. The large shipments of ore each year are gradually depleting the reserves, and if the present rate of production is to be maintained there must be a growth in the present available ore supply. Growth is a natural course. The growth of a city may be affected by the addition of city blocks or by the improvement of utilities necessary for its betterment. These may go on in the order named or concurrently. The city-block type of growth of the Mesabi has been tremendous, and the "betterment" type has followed in due course. Probably the former has reached its limit, and if so, more time will be allotted to the latter. It is not the in¬tent of this paper to present either a eulogy of the wonderful mining methods or a history of the milling, but it is pertinent to say that if the lean-ore area continues to produce, the continuance will be more the result of further improvement of milling methods non well under way than of extension of boundaries by the city block plan of growth.

"The formation of reactive oxygen species resulting from the interaction of silica dust particles with red blood cell membranes was investigated; particularly, the effect of surface hydroxyl (silanol) group concentration on the rate of formation of such reactive oxygen species was investigated. The rate of formation was measured indirectly through the effect of catalase, a hemoprotein peroxidase, on silica-induced hemolysis. It was found that the addition of exogenous catalase to erythrocytes markedly reduces the hemolysis caused by silica particles. Furthermore, the amount of catalase required for deactivation of silica per unit area of particle surface is lower for fumed silica particles and calcined crystalline particles than for uncalcined, crystalline silica, suggesting a correlation between the concentration of OH groups at the silica particle surface and its potential for generation of H2O 2• The addition of albumin, a copper chelator, also decreases hemolysis. These results suggest that the hemolysis caused by silica particles is at least partly related to the formation of H2O2 at the particle surface and its subsequent reaction with Cu+ ions. The relationship between the concentration of surface silanol groups on the silica surface and the amount of catalase required to decrease hemolysis may also provide a method for testing potential fibrogenicity of respirable dusts. IntroductionReactive hydroxyl groups on silica surfaces are known to be cytotoxic and are believed to play a major role in silicosis (1-9). It has been proposed that this cytotoxicity results from hydrogen bonding to cell membranes and a resulting increase in membrane fluidity and permeability (4). Surface hydroxyl groups on silica surfaces have also been shown to interact with carbonyl oxygens in cell membranes (1,5). An extensive study by Nolan et al. (6) of the relationship between the negative surface charge resulting from ionized silanol groups and the hemolytic activity of crystalline a-quartz (Min-U-Sil) has shown a positive correlation between hemolytic activity and the surface concentration of silanol groups. These authors demonstrated that the hydrogen bonding of polyvinyl-N-oxide (PVPNO) with silanol groups, as well as the bonding of metal cations to the ionized sm- groups, results in significant decreases in hemolytic activity. Furthermore, it has been found that the complete removal of surface hydroxyl groups from the surface of respirable silica particles nearly eliminates the hemolytic potential of silica (7), suggesting that hydroxyl groups might be involved in other cytotoxic processes associated with silica-induced lung injury. Reactive oxygen species have been .implicated in cellular damage caused by respirable silica particles. Evidence for the presence .of oxygen radical species (02, OH°, H2O2) generated by silica, especially on freshly formed surfaces, has been produced by various investigators. Kalbanev et al. (8) detected H2O 2 in aqueous suspensions of quartz. Electron spin resonance and spin trapping by Shi et al. (9) confirmed the presence of OH"" radicals in aqueous suspensions of quartz, and Gulumian and van Wyk (10) suggested that both glass and quartz produce hydroxyl radicals in the presence of H2O 2 • Gabor et al. (11) detected the presence of malondialdehydereactive lipid peroxides (i.e., lipid-0°) in cultures of macrophages and respirable silica particles using the thiobarbituric acid (TBA) reaction test. Will (12), however, reported that iron enhances the TBA value of peroxidized lipids, and Scheulen and Kappus (19) found that catalase augmented malondialdehyde formation, thereby increasing the TBA values."

This report describes the development and performance of a multi-level, multi-function Calibration Light Source designed for field-calibration of a group of specific photometers. The Calibration Source is capable of providing ±35% accuracy calibrations at all of the following levels: 0. 05 foot-Lamberts, 6 foot-Lamberts, 6 foot-candles and 20 foot-candles. The Source was found to provide constant light output to within 1% over 50 hours of lamp operation and for line voltage variations of ±25%. It is compact and light-weight (11 pounds), and can be easily transported and used by one man in normal office environments (without requiring a darkroom).

A process was developed on a laboratory scale in which iron contained in galvanizers ' zinc dross and aluminum contained in scrap zinc die - cast alloy were removed simultaneously . Melting both types of scrap together in the proper proportions resulted in formation of solid intermetallic Fe₂ Alg , which was readily removed from the melt by filtration and centrifugation . Recovery was 87 to 92 percent of the available zinc . Refined filtrate contained 0.02 percent iron and 0.20 percent aluminum. Aluminum content was further reduced to less than 0.01 percent by fluxing with zinc chloride . Low temperatures employed and inexpensive equipment requirements make the process commercially attractive .
