This report on the physical and chemical properties of typical crude oils of California is the eighth in a series which will cover the producing districts of the United States, and is supplementary to Serial 2595 of the Bureau of Mines, which includes discussion of results, summary tables, and selected typical analyses of California crudes. The present report contains additional individual analyses of crude, oils from the fields of Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties.

Among petroleum refinery employees and officials throughout the United States there has been marked effort to reduce accident frequency and severity. For the interest and benefit of refineries both in Louisiana and in other petroleum-refining States it has been possible to obtain from five refineries, representing 70 per cent of the production of Louisiana, tae accident experience for the past 3 to 6 years. The companies concerned have requested that their names be not used. For tide reason the four plants listed and discussed are designated as refineries A, E, C, and D. The size of the plant as regards largest to smallest number of employees is indicated by the alphabetical order.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the S02 leaching of MgO from high-MgO-bearing Florida phosphate concentrates. The S02 was effective in leaching some of the MgO from three phosphate concentrates; flow rate of the S02 and leach time were major factors in determining the amount of MgO leached. Calcining the samples, then grinding to minus 200 mesh, and elevating the leach temperature gave only small increases in the amount of MgO leached. The research also showed that some of the MgO was so intimately associated with the phosphate mineral that it could not be removed by S02 leaching. This amounted to about 0.6, 0.7, and 1.0 pct MgO in three leached residues. The calculated heads for the three concentrate samples averaged 1.4, 1.1, and 1.5 pct MgO, respectively, before leaching.

Thermodynamic data for selected metal sulfates were critically evaluated and compiled as part of the Bureau of Mines program to provide a scientific base for use in developing new technology and predicting the feasibility of new processes. Values for Cp°, S°, H° - H°298, -(G° - H°298)/T, ?Hf°, ?Gf°, and log Kf as a function of temperature are given in tabular form. Thermodynamic data were compiled for VOSO4, Cr2(SO4)3, MnSO4, FeSO4, Fe2(SO4)3, CoSO4, NiSO4, Cu2SO4, CuSO4, CuO-CuSO4, ZnSO4, and ZnO-2ZnSO4, together with their stable hydrates.

Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical feasibility of separating anthracite particles from a water-anthracite slurry by atomizing the water and removing the resulting mist in an air current. Products containing 21 percent or less moisture were obtained from slurries made with minus 60-mesh anthracite. Typical recoveries ranged between 67 and 79 percent of the feed when the slurries were atomized in air currents with velocities below 70 ft/min.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the corrosion properties of certain alloys of titanium and to compare them with those of unalloyed titanium. Such information should make it possible to determine the desirability of substituting these alloys for commercially pure titanium in certain applications. Titanium-manganese, titanium-chromium-iron, and titanium-vanadium-iron alloys, with 2 types of unalloyed titanium, I consolidated by arc melting and the other by powder-metallurgy techniques, were included in the study. Tests were carried out in sulfuric, hydrochloric, phosphoric, nitric, and mixed acids and in chloride solutions. All solutions were saturated with air.

Data obtained by the Federal Bureau of Mines on the dust explosion hazard in air are presented for 220 samples of agricultural products. Information is given on ignition temperature of dust clouds and layers, minimum explosive concentration, minimum electrical energy for ignition, explosion pressure and rates of pressure rise, amount of inert dust required to prevent flame propagation, and, in a few instances, the permissible oxygen concentration in an atmosphere to prevent ignition by spark and by heated surface. The effects of particle size and source of sample on explosibility are shown. The relative ignition sensitivity, severity of explosion, and overall explosibility of the materials are characterized by empirical indexes. This report contains Ma obtained by the Bureau in laboratory studies on the explosion hazards of agricultural dusts. Recognition of the dangers will encourage adoption of adequate measures to prevent ignition and explosion during preparation, processing, and utilization of the materials. Agricultural products constitute one of the largest groups of materials used in America. "Effects of Bisbenzylisoquinoline Alkaloids on Alveolar Macrophages: Correlation between Binding Affinity. Inhibitory Potency and Antifibrotic Potential. CASTRANOVA, V., KANG, J-H., MA. J. K. The Chinese have conducted extensive studies concerning the medicinal properties of plant products. In this investigation the ability of three bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids to inhibit particle-induced activation of alveolar macrophages was evaluated and this inhibitory potential was correlated with the ability of those drugs to bind to membrane components. Tetrandrine. i.e.. an herbal medicine used as an antifibrotic agent in China, was a potent inhibitor of particle-stimulated oxygen consumption, superoxide release, and hydrogen peroxide secretion by alveolar macrophages. Tetrandrine also exhibited substantial binding affinity for membrane lipids and alveolar macrophages. In contrast, tubocurine, an analogue with little antifibrotic potential, exhibited low binding affinity and had little effect on macrophage activation. Methoxyadiantifoline, an alkaloid of unknown antifibrotic potential, exhibited inhibitory and binding properties similar to those of tetrandrine. The data indicate that a strong relationship exists between the antifibrotic potential of these alkaloids and their ability to bind to alveolar macrophages and inhibit particle-induced activation of these phagocytes. These drugs should serve as useful probes to evaluate the role of alveolar macrophages in pulmonary fibrosis. © 1991 Academic Press, Inc.Chronic silicosis is a fibrotic disease resulting from occupational exposure to silica dust. It is manifested initially by an increase in the quantity of pulmonary surfactant (Dethloff et al., 1986). However, in later stages it is characterized by an increase in collagen formation and the development of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions in the lung (Ziskind et al., 1976). Although mechanisms for the progression of silicosis have not yet been completely defined, activation of alveolar macrophages by respirable silica particles is believed to play an important role in the etiology of this disease. Studies from our laboratory have shown that both in vitro and in vivo silica exposures result in a stimulation of macrophage release of reactive products capable of damaging the lung parenchyma (Castranova et al., 1990; Goodman et al., 1990). In addition, exposure of al¬veolar macrophages to silica results in the release of fibrogenic factors which enhance the proliferation of fibroblasts and the synthesis of collagen by these pneumocytes (Leibovich and Ross, 1976; Bitterman et al., 1982, 1983).The bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids, which represent the largest group among the iso-quinoline compounds isolated from the plant kingdom, are known to exhibit a broad rangeof pharmacological activities. Tetrandrine, for example, an alkaloid isolated from the root of Stephania tetrandra, has been tested for its antitumor, antihypertensive, and antisilicotic effects (Kupchan and Atland, 1973; Zeng et al., 1985; Yu et al., 1983). It is currently used in China as a treatment for angina, hypertension, and silica-induced pulmonary fibrosis (Li et al., 1981). Several related bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids such as methoxyadiantifoline and tubocurine have also been evaluated for medicinal effects. Methoxyadiantifoline has been shown to exhibit effects on the cardiovascular system similar to those reported for tetrandrine (Jia et al., 1988). However, to date, the antifibrotic activity of methoxyadiantifoline has not been evaluated. In contrast to tetrandrine, tubocurine, a structural analogue of this drug, has been reported to be relatively ineffective against fibrosis (Mo et al., 1982)."

The Ore Hill zinc-lead mine in Grafton County, N. H., was investigated by the Bureau of Mines from March to July 1943 and from August to October 1944. Fourteen holes with an aggregate bore of 4,899 feet were diamond-drilled, the old workings were unwatered and sampled to an inclined depth of 250 feet, and the tailings dumps were surveyed and sampled. The deposit at the Ore Hill mine comprises a bedding-plane vein of massive sphalerite and galena with subordinate chalcopyrite and pyrite in a series of interbedded metasedimentary and metavolcanic schists about one-quarter mile east of their contact with the intrusive Baker Pond gneiss. The property was first opened about 1850 and was active at times to 1914. Production records are not available, but the output is believed to have been considerable. In 1944, leasers recovered a marketable mica product from mica schist from the dumps and certain outcrops. This report describes the work performed in the Bureau's investigation and presents the data obtained.

In 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Mines studied the 350-acre Henry?s Lake Wilderness Study Area (ID-035-077) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The Wilderness Study Area is located in northern Fremont County, ID, approximately 140 air miles north-northeast of Pocatello and 3 miles south of the Montana border. The Wilderness Study Area is near the north shore of Henry's Lake at the foot of the southwest-facing slope of Black Mountain. Archean hornblende gneiss, the main rock type present, crops out northeast of the Madison Range Fault, which trends northwest across the southwest corner of the Wilderness Study Area.

THE Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910 to conduct research and to establish standards for mining equipment and practices which would conserve human life, natural resources, and property in the mineral industries. Several lists of equipment approved by the Bureau as permissible for use in gassy coal mines have been issued since then. The lists covering all approved equipment except breathing apparatus and explosives have born consolidated into two publications: Bulletin 343. Permissible Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, and Information Circular 8220, Permissible Mina Equipment Approved By The Bureau of Mines During 1953-62. The, purpose of this publication is to supplement Bulletin 343 and Information Circular 8220 with a listing of permissible equipment approved during 1963 and 1964. One aspect of a program to improve the chances of survival following coal mine disasters is the development of a communications system which will allow surviving miners to make their circumstances known to rescue teams. At present, it appears that an electromagnetic system may be most practical. The development and design of an effective electromagnetic communications link for signalling between mine workings and the surface requires knowledge of pertinent physical properties of the rocks overlying the mine workings and the characteristics of the ambient noise against which a communications signal must be recognized. Knowledge of the overburden electrical transmission properties is useful not only for determining a practical operating transmitter frequency at a given mine, but also for ensuring the best possible electromagnetic coupling for routine or emergency communication purposes. Field studies of the electrical transmission properties of the overburden of coal mines in Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania generally show that a rela- tively uniform and unimodal electrical conductivity distribution exists provided that the region has not been subject to considerable structural or metamorphic deformation such as that observed in the Gary District of West Virginia. Measurements of ambient surface electromagnetic noise levels at several mines in Colorado, Illinois, and West Virginia were taken and analyzed and are presented in the form of amplitude histogram plots both as a function of frequency and time of day. These amplitude histograms may be used in conjunction with overburden resistivity data in implementing an uplink communications beacon system which will yield a specified signal-to-noise ratio at the surface. Numerous C.W. field transmission tests were made in various coal mining environments with use made of either a buried vertical-axis transmitting loop or a short insulated grounded current line. These transmission tests were made from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz in frequency and at several geographic surface receiving sites. The results of these field measurements show, in general, good agreement with theoretically calculated results. Since the produced surface magnetic field from a buried vertical-axis loop source or the produced surface horizontal electric field from a buried horizontal current line show better agreement with theoretical results, they could be used for beacon location system. One criterion would be in detecting the equatorial and polar null lines of the horizontal electric field component which is normal to the direction of emplacement of a buried transmitting line current source. A second criterion would be in the surface mapping of the maximum in the vertical magnetic field directly over a vertical-axis loop transmitter and the associated null in the vertical magnetic field at a horizontal offset distance which is about 1.4 times the depth of burial of the transmitter. Finally, a third criterion would lie in the surface mapping of the null in the horizontal magnetic field directly over the vertical-axis beacon and the associated maximum in the horizontal magnetic field at an offset distance from the transmitter axis of half the depth of burial of the loop transmitter. In mapping the vertical magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, the size effect of the transmitter loop must be taken into account when the separation distances between the transmitter and receiving sensor are less than ten times the effective radius of the source loop; increasing the size of the transmitting source relative to the source-receiver separation distance shifts the null in the vertical magnetic field to greater offsets. In mapping either the vertical or horizontal magnetic field over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter, care should be exercised in ascertaining that measured nulls and maxima are along radials through the axis of the buried source loop. For the main part, coupling experiments show that ambient electromagnetic noise in coal mining districts is less of a problem above 1000 Hertz. But secondary and perhaps undesirable maxima and null phenomena (as well as penetration problems) would occur in many coal mine provinces in the behavior of the surface horizontal magnetic field (over a buried vertical-axis loop transmitter) if transmission frequencies as high as 10 kHertz were used.

As part of a project to develop refractory metal alloys suitable for high-temperature structural applications, the Bureau of Mines applied solid solution and precipitation-hardening techniques to columbium and tantalum alloys. Thirty-three alloys were evaluated to determine their formability, strength, and oxidation resistance. Three alloys had tensile strengths near 40,000 psi at 1,200° C: Cb-1N-5W-5V-10Hf (No.4), Cb-15Hf-5W-0.5B (No. 31), and Cb-15Hf-SW-IB (No. 32). Oxidation resistance of the high-strength alloys was good. Alloy4 gained only 34 mg/cm2 at 1,200° C, and 21 mg/cm2 at 1,000° C in 2 hours. Hot forming was done without any protection from oxidation.

Relative enthalpies of CuBr from 298.15 to 1,301 K were measured at the Bureau of Mines to provide thermodynamic data needed for the advancement of mineral technology. The temperatures of transition were measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the standard enthalpies of transition[ (IlH~r) by drop calorimetry. The combined results gave reversible transitions at 657 K with llH~r= 1.10 kcal/mol, at 741 K with lm~r == 0.51 kcal/mol, and at 759 K with an enthalpy of fusion (AH~) of 1.22 kcal/moL ] An anomalous increase in heat capacity preceded the first crystal transition at 657 K. Tabulated values are listed for the standard relative enthalpy, heat capacity, entropy, and Gibbs energy function from 298.15 to 1,500 K. Standard relative enthalpies are also given in equation form and combined with thermodynamic data from the literature to derive values of standard enthalpies of formation and Gibbs energies of formation.

The purpose of this study is to provide data that demonstrates that the Alcoa flash calciner design can be used for the decomposition of AlCl3?6H2O to A1203. Heat and material valance data for calcination provides data on the partial pressure of HCl in the off-gases. Experimentally determined data for the HCl partial pressure, over solutions expected in producing alumina from clay by the hydrochloric acid process, show that HCl can be absorbed from the off-gases into process solutions to effect crystallization of AlCl3?6H2O.

Studies were made to determine the amenability of yttrium to fused-salt electrorefining in a controlled atmosphere. Tests were conducted in a LiCl- YCl3 electrolyte system at 710° C. The major variables studied were the YCl3 content of the electrolyte, from l.7 to 13.4 mol percent, and the initial cathode current density, from 410 to 1,630 amperes per square foot. Vacuum distillation was employed to remove salt from the deposited metal. Metallic impurities, except for lithium, could be reduced to near or below their lower analytical limits, ranging from 10 ppm for Cu to 300 ppm for Ta; reduction of oxygen content, however, was accomplished only in metal produced from electrolytes with 5.4 mol percent YCl3 or less. Initial cathode current density had little effect on the purity of the product.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has successfully demonstrated an electrooxidation-solvent extraction-carbon adsorption process for recovering molybdenum and rhenium from offgrade concentrates. The flow sequence consists of dissolution of metal values by electrooxidation, liquid-solid separation by thickening, acidification and chlorate ion removal by sulfur dioxide treatment, solvent extraction to concentrate the molybdenum and rhenium, separation of molybdenum and rhenium by carbon adsorption, and metal recovery by crystallization. Molybdenum and rhenium were recovered as ammonium paramolybdate and ammonium perrhenate. Electrolysis of brine-concentrate pulps to generate a hypochlorite oxidizing agent in situ resulted in the dissolution of 98.9 and 99.1 pct of the molybdenum and rhenium, respectively, at an energy consumption of 13.7 kwhr/lb of molybdenum extracted.

World investment 10 all mineral and mining industry sectors is not available. However, partial information available provides some information useful for analysis. Information available in this section covers limited geographic information on investment in the steel industry, limited information for petroleum industry capital spending, and total U.S. foreign investment in comparison to the mineral-related sectors (tables 13, 14, and 15). Annual steel industry investment is available for the European Community, almost all countries within the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), Latin America, and other countries with significant mineral industries, such as Canada, Japan, and the United States. Although information was not available for 1992, data for 1991 indicate that for those countries aforementioned, total investment increased by 8 %. However, investment patterns were very different within the different groups of countries. While the European Community had a net increase of 12 %, dominated by an almost °40 % increase in Germany, EFTA member countries had a 26 % decrease in investment for the same period. Investment in EC countries was almost seven times that of EFT A countries. Japan's investment in the iron and steel industry, by far the largest of those available, almost twice that of the EC and almost four times that of the United States, increased by more than 20 %. In North America, investment in Canada and the United States decreased. Almost all of Latin America decreased investment in the sector. The notable exception was Mexico, with a 60 % increase. Changes in Mexico's investment policies of the recent past, its economic growth, and privatization of its iron and steel industry are some of the reasons for such an increase. The other country covered individually in Latin America, where investment in the iron and steel industry increased, although slightly, was Argentina. This limited information does not allow a comprehensive analysis of global industry trend, which in turn impacts many other mineral commodities, and with the transition in many countries within Europe and Central Eurasia that are now effecting the steel industries of the countries that were members of the U.S.S.R. and its CMEA partners, it is most regrettable that comprehensive and comparable data, both current and historic, on investment in this area are not available.

The Bureau of Mines initiated a field test of underground coal gasitication to investigate the technologic feasibility of gasifying a subbituminous coal. The test site is near the town of Hanna, Wyo., about 70 miles northwest of Laramie. Preliminary results of the experiment are described. The coal was ignited in the central well of a 16-well pattern. Both forward and reverse combustion techniques were attempted to prepare a path of sufficient permeability to permit the high air injection rat s necessary for gasification. Gasification between linked wellbores was sustained for periods as long as 3 months. Hydrogen-rich gas having a heating value of 100 to 150 Btu/scf was produced.

Galvanizers' sal skimmings have been treated by two methods of leaching in attempts to produce preflux solutions suitable for use in galvanizing operations. Both water-leaching and acid-leaching procedures are effective, except in severely exhausted skimmings when water-leaching becomes impractical. A preliminary analysis of the skimmings is not required. Solutions in the recommended concentration range can be produced conveniently by control of pH, specific gravity, and chlorine content. A technician would require only a short period of training to be able to perform the operations described.
