Extensive studies have been made of the various effluents found in the Synthane coal-to-gas process. Analyses have been made of the waters, gases, and trace elements present in some of the streams. Results of analyses show the water effluents are the area where extensive research is needed.

The deformation modulus of coal mine pillars theoretically can be reduced by drilling holes in advance of the mining face. This reduction of modulus along the edge of the pillar has the effect of decreasing the stress concentration in the roof; control of roof caving is thereby predicted. Initial field work indicated that a high horizontal stress field existed at the field test site: Subsequent field work was undertaken to confirm the high horizontal stress field and to attempt to relieve the horizontal stress in the immediate roof. A method of softening pillars in conjunction with normal mining activity was developed. Instruments to measure horizontal roof strain, roof parting, roof tilt at the rib, and changes in vertical and horizontal stress in the roof and in the coal were used. These instruments were installed in both softened and unsoftened entries and in locations to indicate the effect of vertical slots in the roof. Significant stress reduction due to pillar softening was indicated, but the effect of this reduction on roof stability was not established. The vertical roof slots relieved the horizontal stress in the immediate roof very effectively, and observations of roof conditions indicated that the slots definitely improved roof stability.

Economic studies of four processes for using the glass fractions obtained from processing municipal incinerator residues are presented. Three processes--brick production, floor tile production, and glass wool production--use the colored glass fraction from an incinerator residue separation plant, and the fourth process, glass spheres production, uses the colorless glass fraction. The fixed capital cost and the estimated annual operating cost for six plants are presented in the report and summarized, as follows: [ ] The value of the product obtained from each of the plants was calculated on the basis of the interest rate of return method. Each of the processes appears economically attractive when comparing the product values with estimated selling prices. However, the effect of the products on market size and price must be determined.

This interpretation of the laws of Bolivia has been prepared from the best available information in Washington, but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers to whom it is being referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. SYNOPSIS OF LAW All useful substances of the mineral Kingdom belong originally to the State. The soil and subsoil are regarded as two distinct parts, the latter extending indefinitely in depth (Art. 2). The subsoil is under the dominion of the State, which may either abandon it to common use, grant it gratuitously to the owner of the soil, or alienate it, in return for an annual fee, to any individual or association that applies for it. This report describes development of the fusion-leach crystallization precipitation process for producing a hafnium content feed material for hafnium-zirconium separation plants. Mixtures of zircon, potassium silicofluoride, and potassium carbonate (or potassium chloride) were fused to prepare soluble potassium zirconium hexafluoride-potassium hafnium hexafluoride salts. High extraction of these salts was obtained by countercurrent leaching the fused material in dilute hydrofluoric acid. About one-half of the hafnium was recovered in hafnium-enriched mother liquor by cooling clarified lead: liquor to crystallize most of the zirconium salt. Additional hafnium was recovered from the primary crystals in a multiple dissolution-recrystallization step. Hafnium-enriched oxides having a hafnium-zirconium ratio of more than three times that of zircon were precipitated from the combined mother liquors. The hafnium and zirconium recoveries in the precipitate were 83 and 24 percent, respectively. About 71 percent of the zirconium and the remainder of the hafnium were recovered in potassium zirconium hexafluoride crystals of low-hafnium content.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been studying crude petroleum from the producing fields of the United States, During the past year 10 crude-oil samples have been collected and analyzed from the producing fields of Pennsylvania and New York. This report gives the results of these analyses and for the purpose of comparison also analyses of samples of crude oils taken previously from some of these fields. This survey includes samples from normal producing properties as well as from properties using stimulative production methods such as water flooding and rapressuring. The outstanding feature of the survey is that the crude oils from tike various fields throughout this general area are similar in character and uniform in quality although they were produced from different sands and by various methods. Samples from fields in Venango County, Pa., however, appear to have a lower gasoline content than the others. This report includes two analyses reprinted from Bureau of Mines Bulletin 291.4/

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) conducted experiments to determine if training using a latent- image, three-dimensional (3-D) slide simulation exercise improved miners' ability to recognize roof and rib hazards. The effectiveness of this innovative type of classroom training was investigated by measuring workers' performance on a hazard recognition task. The study was unique in that hazard recognition skills were assessed in the workplace using actual coal mine roof and rib hazards. Results showed that training with a latent-image, 3- D slide simulation exercise significantly improved each subject's performance on the in-mine hazard recognition task. Further, the USBM researchers concluded that transfer of learning from the classroom to the workplace occurred.

The Bureau of Mines developed a spectrochemical method to determine six constituents in coal ash in the following concentration ranges: silica 9 to 63 percent, alumina 7.5 to 35 percent, ferric oxide 2 to 30 percent, calcium oxide 1 to 29 percent, magnesium oxide 0.5 to 6 percent, and titanium oxide 0.5 to 4 percent. Samples of coal ash are fused with a mixture of lithium tetraborate and vanadium pentoxide. The resulting beads are crushed, mixed with powdered graphite, and briquetted. The pellets are analyzed spectrographically, using controlled high-voltage spark excitation. Vanadium serves as the internal standard. Effects due to matrix variations are minimized by fusion with lithium tetraborate. Intensity ratios of selected analytical lines are determined photometrically, Concentrations are read from analytical curves, prepared from synthetic standards, relating log intensity ratios to log concentration. A combustion procedure is used to determine sulfur tri-oxide. The method is most useful when large numbers of coal ashes must be analyzed but a high degree of accuracy is not essential.

As a part of the Bureau of Mines' intensive; 'investigation of domestic manganese deposits, ore-dressing studies were conducted on three samples of oxide and silicate manganese ores from various Wyoming properties. The samples wore as follows: 1. A 2-ton sample of ore was obtained by a Bureau engineer during examination of the Caulkins-McGuckin property in the center of Crook County, 10 miles north of Sundance, Wyo. The ore body was described as a vein deposit in rhyolite porphyry. 2. The J. B. C. Mining Co. submitted a 1-ton sample of oxide manganese ore from a property located 44 miles northeast of Rock River in Albany County, Wyoming. 3. A 1-ton sample of oxide-silicate-ore was obtained by a Bureau examining engineer from the Gheen property in the northeast corner of Washakie County, Wyo. The ore body was described as a replacement deposit in a country rock of silicified limestone. As the samples differed widely in physical and chemical characteristics and also in their response to methods of concentration, ore from each property was considered a separate ore-dressing problem.

In the Scurry Reef field, Scurry County, Tex., a study was made to determine the physical properties of the oil in all parts of the reservoir by a new method developed for this study. The method involved correlation of data from a survey 1 of the gravity of the produced oil, from measurements of gas-oil ratios on key wells selected to give representative data for the entire reservoir, and from laboratory analyses of reservoir oil samples. A field survey was made of the API gravities of the produced oil by testing oil samples from 107 key wells. Precise gas-oil-ratio tests were made on 45 key wells that were producing under comparable separator-operating conditions. Subsurface-oil samples were obtained from seven wells, selected to provide reservoir oils ranging approximately from a minimum to a maximum in saturation pressure. The physical properties of the subsurface-oil samples were determined, and correlations were made of these laboratory data with the field gas-oil-ratio test data. These correlations were then used to estimate physical properties of the oil throughout the reservoir. A logical procedure of determining the variations in physical properties of reservoir oils in most fields is to obtain and analyze subsurface-oil samples from enough key wells to provide an ample coverage of the field. Under this procedure, data from a large number of samples would be needed to provide the desired information on the Scurry Reef field, as it is one of the largest known in the United States.

The Bureau of Mines Minerals Availability System collected and analyzed data for 34 nonlaterite and 9 nickeliferous laterite domestic chromite deposits in order to assess their viability as sources of chromium under present technologic and economic conditions. These 43 deposits, none currently in production, contain approximately 6.3 and 22.3 million metric tons of Cr203 at the demonstrated and identified resource levels, respectively. Approximately 4.6 and 15.6 million metric tons of Cr203 are recoverable at the demonstrated and identified levels, respectively, for the 34 nonlaterite deposits. None of these resources are economically recoverable at January 1981 market prices. Production of metallurgical-grade chromite (market price $128 to $144) would require a minimum chromite market price of $237 per metric ton. Chemical-grade chromite production (market price $74 to $85) would require a chromite market price in excess of $188 per metric ton. From the 34 nonlaterite deposits, roughly 5.4 and 17.6 million metric tons of ferrochrome could be produced at the demonstrated and identified resource levels, respectively; however, a minimum market price of $770 per metric ton of ferrochrome would be required to stimulate production. The nine nickeliferous laterite deposits were not evaluated through production stages because of uncertainties in process technology and cost.

The object of this program was to extend the capabilities of visual paging systems both in size and function. The system developed uses the mine pager phone line for communication, monitoring, and remote control. A central station, using a minicomputer, transmits signals by phase inversion modulation of a 16,384 Hz carrier to as many as 999 remote units. The remote unit addressed returns An echo to indicate that it is functioning and, in the case of monitor units, to convey the monitor data. Magnetically latched display dis[c]s, which can be seen from both sides when posted, are used for visual paging. Lists of the addresses of posted pages, unanswered pages, and non-echoing units are prepared by the central station computer. The system was designed to be intrinsically safe and should operate for three months on a 12-volt lantern battery.

The effects of ultrasonic radiation on the electrodeposition of copper-zinc, copper-cadmium, and copper-tin alloys from cyanide baths were investigated by the Bureau of Mines at frequencies of 18.5 and 38 kilocycles per second, and at acoustic intensities up to 0.5 watt per cm3. Significant changes occurred in the composition of the deposited alloys; some of these deposits were brighter, harder, more adherent, or of finer grain size than nonirradiated deposits. The irradiated deposits were also smoother and less porous, and they afforded better corrosion protection for the substrate metal in sodium chloride solution. The limiting current densities of the cyanide baths were increased by the application of ultrasonics. Anode and cathode current efficiencies also were increased, and cell voltages were lowered; the relationship of these effects to current density is discussed. Electrode potential measurements showed significant depolarization effects at both electrodes during ultrasonic irradiation. The resulting decrease in cell voltage was due chiefly to depolarization at the anode, and the anode became less passive.

Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-363/. The second report gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 19363/. The third report of the seriis gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-375/. This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative that others.

Present-day interest in the rare-earth elements and their compounds, for both metallurgical and ceramic uses, makes it highly desirable to accumulate basic thermodynamic data that can be applied to theoretical considerations of the processing of these substances. Such data still are seriously lacking. This Bureau of Mines paper reports the results of high-temperature heat content measurements of the sesquioxides of four rare-earth elements--europium, gadolinium, neodymium, and samarium--and of the closely related element, yttrium. The temperature ranges covered by the measurements are as follows: Monoclinic Eu2O3, 298°-1,802° K. Cubic Eu203, 298°-1,350° K. Monoclinic Gd203, 298-1,802° K. Cubic Gd203, 298°-1,550° K. Instabilities in electric steelmaking furnace arcs cause electrical and acoustical noise, reduce operating efficiency, increase refractory erosion, and increase electrode usage. The U.S. Bureau of Mines is investigating methods to stabilize these arcs. To perform experiments to test new hypotheses, Bureau researchers designed and instrumented an advanced, experimental single-phase furnace. This report describes this furnace, which was equipped with high-speed data acquisition capabilities for electrical, temperature, pressure, and flow-rate measurements; automated atmosphere control; ballistic calorimetry; and view ports for high-speed cinematography. Precise environmental control and accurate data acquisition allow the statistical design of experiments and assignment of rigorous confidence limits when potential furnace or procedural modifications are tested.

A technique offering promise as a metallurgical processing sequence the recovery of molybdenum (Mo) from the sulfide mineral--molybdenite?was investigated. The method consists of two steps: (1) electrosynthesis of pure dimolybdenum carbide (Mo2C) from molybdenite (MoS2) and (2) interaction of Mo2C and molybdic oxide (MoO3) to produce pure molybdenum metal. Two molten salt systems were satisfactory for electrosynthesizing Mo2C. The first was a mixture of potassium chloride (KCl), potassium fluoride (KY), and sodium metasilicate (Na2SiO3), and the second consisted of sodium fluoride (NaF), KF, sodium tetraborate (Na2B4O7), and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). Yields up to 0.42 gram of Mo2C per ampere-hour were obtained. The carbide, mixed with monitored amounts of MoO3, was converted to molybdenum metal of 99.9 percent purity by sintering at 1,500° C.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing cloy reining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These Toners are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production casts. Although the publication of total production cants might not be advisable in sore instances, yet a knowledge of operating costs is essential to the technical discussion end study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically coiled to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals specifically with the methods employed by the Clay City Fire Co., Uhrichsville, Tuscarawas County, Ohio.
