The design and operation of the Koppers powdered-coal gasifier and its auxiliaries at Louisiana, Mo., are described. This unit was designed to convert 1 ton of coal per hour with oxygen and superheated steam into synthesis gas - primarily carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The first run was made on May 4, 1949. After this, 44 short runs (less than 8 hours each) and 1 long run (lasting 11 days) were made. Total gasification time was 420 hours. The gasifier was not cooled down during the year when these runs were made. After an initial period of test operations and equipment proving, during which 12 runs were made, the effect of numerous variables on gasifier performance was studied. The long run was made primarily to check the equipment in sustained operation. Detailed data from these runs are presented.

"INTRODUCTION Barite is one of the major industrial minerals whose production has increased considerably in the last 10 years. In 1935 domestic production of barite was 218,075 tons and. had increased by 1944 to 515,136 tons. 3/ Most of the primary uses for barite and barite products were developed before 1935, so the increase in barite production reflects the growth of industry in general rather than any recent developments in barite technology.The principal uses for ground and crushed barrite are as a weighting agent in heavy drilling fluids, as a filler in rubber and other materials, as a pigment and extender in paints, and as a flux in glass melt. In addition, a considerable' quantity of barite serves as the raw material for the manufacture of lithopone and barium chemicals.Specifications for barrite vary widely and depend primarily on the use to which the material is put. The primary requisites for barite used in heavy drilling muds -are that it have a minimum specific gravity of 4.2 and be very,low in soluble salts. A minimun barium sulfate content of 92 percent may be specified; but this is less important than the gravity. 4/ In addition before consumption the material must be ground to '92 percent minus 325-mesh. 5/ Lithopone and chemical manufacturers require a minimum of 94 Percent barium sulfate, a maximum of 1.0 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of fluorine. 6/ Barite used as fillers in light-colored products should be of fairly high grade, but the filler used in dark products may be considerably lower grade.Glass barite should contain a minimum of 96 percent barium sulfate, not more than 3 percent moisture, a maxium of 0.2 to 0.4 percent iron oxide, and not more than a trace of titanium oxide. The results of extensive field tests of a new and powerful method of hard rock excavation are presented in this report.* The method, known by the acronym REAM (Rapid Excavation and Mining), employs high velocity, smooth bore cannons to efficiently deliver energy to the rock and has been demonstrated for underground tunneling, drilling, surface benching, scaling, and secondary breakage in hard granitic rock at the Hope Valley Mine test site in California. Solid projectiles made from inexpensive materials such as concrete or steel, and weighing from 8 to 12 pounds, are launched by conventional high speed cannons and impact the rock at velocities of 5000 feet per second--an impact energy of about 4 million foot pounds (Figure 1). The energy applied at peak pressures of nearly 2 million psi over a period of tens of microseconds breaks down the rock by a complex mechanism of crushing, spalling, and initiation and propagation of fractures produced by the interaction of successive impacts and free surfaces. In the design of plants to separate helium from natural gas , it is necessary to estimate the enthalpies of the various streams at various positions in the process . This Bureau of Mines report surveys the various methods that have been used to determine enthalpies and gives information on the organizations with such capabilities . The minimum information required for developing an enthalpy diagram is presented , and the relative merits of the various methods are discussed . It is concluded that methods that require no mass flow rate or energy measurements are to be preferred .

The stripping of coal with mechanical. equipment has progressed since the introduction of the first steam-powered shovel for the retóval of overburden at a mine in Pittsburg, Kans., in 1877...From the smart steam-powered shovels with dippers of less than a cubic yard capacity, small digging radius, and shovels that required manual moving, the trend has been toward large-capacity machines. Steam as power has been replaced largely by electricity, gasoline, and Diesel fuel, and dipper capacity as great as 35 cubic yards has been attained. Shovels and drag lines are self-propelled and revolve through 360°. The cost of these large-capacity modern machines is great, and in order to assure the return of the investment during the life of the property the reserve of coal in the area to be mined must be large;" Many comparatively small areas of coal suitable for strip mining exist, but these areas probably could not be mined, profitably with this large equip- ment. Therefore, heavy equipment has not been used in small areas because of the high cost in place of this equipment, the time and Atpense required to transport the machines to the mine site, and the construction of power lines if the machines are electrical powered.. Scrapers and light excavating equipment ane mobile, and the investment cost is not high. These units have been used in sirring the coal in small areas. A study to determine the methods in, yogue, and economic considerations involved in the use of such equipment was undertaken, and the information obtained is discussed in this report.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, under contract to the U.S. Department of Energy, investigated the erosive-wear properties of seven commercial alloys with potential applications as valves for coal-conversion plants. A dry particle, jet-erosion apparatus was used to determine the wear of seven materials: 316 and 440-C stainless steels, K-68, K-701, and K-801 cemented tungsten carbides, HC-250 white cast iron, and Haynes 6B. The alumina abrasive entrained in the nitrogen gas jet had particle sizes of 27 or 50 µm, the abrasive velocities were 55 to 170 m/s, and the particle impingement angles were 15° to 90°. The maximum specific wear for ductile materials was found to occur at impingement angles of 15° to 30°, and the minimum specific wear occurred at 60° to 90°. For the brittle materials, maximum specific wear occurred at impingement angles of 50° to 85° and minimum specific wear was at the lowest angles. As the velocity and erosive particle size increased, the specific wear increased. The specific wear was related to the velocity by the power function WocAVn, where n was 1.8 to 3.9 for ductile materials and 1.8 to 3.6 for brittle materials.

In 1910 the Richmond-Eureka Co. suspended all operations except small-scale leasing, but company and other geologists contended that the El Dorado dolomite would also carry ore in its continuation from fault block north and northeast of the productive old working. The company began to explore the fault block in 1923 by diamond drilling from the,900 level of the Locan shaft, but for various reasons the hole was drilled to a depth of only 2 feet and was then abandoned. Eureka Corporation, Ltd., planned an extensive diamond-drilling program, which included four deep diamond-drill holes, one designated ""A"" fig. if it is to be drilled from the surfaced, and three designated ""E"", ""C"" and ""D"" figs land to be drilled from the 900 level of the Locan shaft. Of these only B and C were completed by the company. Hole C was a contribution,of the hole started by the, started by the Richmond Eureka Co. The site for hole D (figs. 1 and 2) was prepared, but the hole was not drilled. Both B and C holes penetrated sulfide ore carrying good percentages of zinc, lead, gold, and silver. The ore bodies were 40 feet thick and were found approximately 1,400 feet below the 900 level of Locan shaft.On the basis of the very favorable results obtained from the drilling program, the Eureka Corporation planned extensive development of the property and in 1942 commenced sinking the Fad shaft (figs. 1 and 2). The shortage of equipment and materials brought on by the war and difficulties with water in the shaft greatly hindered progress. However, early in 1943 the Eureka Cor¬poration, Ltd., of Canada submitted to the War Production Board a proposal for developing the mine and milling 500 tons of zinc-lead ore a day. The proposal involved an expenditure of $2,890,750."

During 1928 questionnaires covering the calendar year 1927 were sent to over 1700 quarries: producing stone for purposes other thaw cutting to dimension. These inclined producers of stone for limn burning; cement manufacture, rip rag, and crushed stone. The various rinds of stone represented were limestone, trap rock, sandstone, granite, and marble. Replies received from limestone producers prior to November, 1928, were compiled into tables and published in February, 1925, as a preliminary report (Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation 2911).

This final report summarizes the effort on a very aggressively scheduled and demanding development program undertaken by Westinghouse for the U.S. Bureau of Mines under Contract No. H0101262. The objective of this program was to produce hardware and test it to determine the efficacy of certain concepts of Coal Mine Rescue and Survival as established by the request for proposal and the study performed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). (These are stated in paragraph 1. 1 for reference.) In carrying out this program, Westinghouse provided specific hardware designs in consonance with the objectives of the concepts outlined in the NAE study final report. Though this contract did not require producing final design hardware ready for introduction to the coal mining community, components of the CMR&SS - as delivered - have some value in disaster situations and are to be kept on standby alert. Additional design and production development is required and should be undertaken on most of the subsystems and components before they can be used in the competitive coal mining community.

High-volume, low-pressure water jets have been employed for erosion of loosely consolidated rocks for centuries. This excavation method finds application in specialized circumstances even today. The use of high-pressure, low-volume water jets for rock cutting is more recent and was made possible by the development of high-pressure water pumps. Despite the benefits often claimed for these systems, high-pressure water jets still have not found widespread application. In this report, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has reviewed the various methods that have been employed using water jets to break rock and has focused on one method, termed "jet-assisted cutting," which was determined to be the closest to commercial development. The current state of knowledge based on laboratory and field experiences using this cutting method is reviewed, and possible future developments for this approach to excavation are assessed.

"Black powder is employed widely in peace and war. Its properties are therefore of considerable interest to many. The Bureau of Mines frequently is asked to furnish information on its use and safe handling in the mining and mineral industries in times of peace and is now engaged in studies of its application to the arts of war.Black powder has been the agent in many accidents - some very disastrous - and its handling and use are deemed very hazardous. The belief is widespread that the hazards are due principally to the ease with which the powder is ignited by a hot spark or flame in contradistinction to high explosives; these usually are ignited only with difficulty, and some burn incompl0tely and to a certain extent are self-extinguishing. Primary precautions, .therefore, should be taken to prevent the access of heat, spark, and flame.In black powder manufacturing operations a frequent source of disaster is the initiation of fires and explosions in the wheel mills in which the sulfur, charcoal, and nitrate are incorporated. Long experience has indicated that the wheel mill probably will fire if the powder is not kept moist enough; manufacturing supervision calls for the maintenance of a minimum moisture content, at least during the milling. Accidents occur elsewhere in the manufacturing line, and in an endeavor to minimize these, particularly those happening in corning mills, one of the writers suggested many years ago that a suitable humidity be maintained in other operations in the hope that it would serve protectively as in the wheel mill. The experience of one company for many years with this practice was favorable. It seemed desirable therefore, to explore the question experimentally."

A study was made to determine the optimum conditions for precipitation of uranium from mill solutions using hydrogen peroxide. Precipitation tests were made on both synthetic and actual mill solutions. Parameters studied included amount of hydrogen peroxide, initial pH, reaction pH, time, and temperature. Also investigated was the effect of varied amounts of vanadium, molybdenum, and sulfate in the test solution on uranium precipitation and product quality. The optimum conditions for complete precipitation and high product quality were (1) the use of 150 percent of the stoichiometric requirement of hydrogen peroxide, (2) initial pH of 1.0, (3) reaction pH between 3.4 and 5.0, (4) 4 hours reaction time, and (5) ambient reaction temperature. The excess hydrogen peroxide requirement is partially dependent on the amount of impurities present in the feed solution. The hydrogen peroxide process appeared applicable to treatment of the several mill eluate and strip solutions tested. The experimental studies also indicated that the hydrogen peroxide technique gives substantially better product quality than that produced by ammonia precipitation.

In 1986, the Bureau of Mines conducted a probability sample survey, Mining Industry Population Survey, to measure such employee characteristics as occupation; principal equipment operated; work location at the mine; present job, present company, and total mining experience; job-related training during the last 2 yr; age; sex; race; and education. The population estimates are necessary to properly analyze the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) injury (includes illness and fatality data) statistics; that is, to compare and contrast injury rates for various subpopulations in order to identify those groups that are exhibiting higher than average injury rates. This report uses the survey's results to characterize the U.S. coal mining workforce from March through September 1986. A companion report, Information Circular (IC) 9193, "Characterization of the 1935 Metal and Nonmetal Mining Workforce:' provides similar information for the U.S metal and nonmetal mining industry.

"INTRODUCTION Clay beds of southwestern North Dakota were investigated to determine (1) the average alumina content of the clays in four principal areas of occurrence, (2.) which, if any, would be the most feasible method of extracting alumina from the clays, and (3) whether the clays had any other commercial uses.During the investigation exposed sedimentary beds were examined for clay and the thickness and areal extent of outcropping clay beds in the more promising areas were measured. Four-principal areas of bentonitic clays, comprising 6,967 acres in Stark, Slope; and Billings Counties, N. Dak., were mapped and sampled.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our natural resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. Air pollution control regulation$ already implemented or being considered for implementation require substantial investment of capital to remove the sulfur oxides from copper, lead, and zinc smelter gases. There will be an attendant increase in production costs and possibly an associated increase in the price of these metals to the consumer. The total investment and any resultant metal price increase will depend upon the control regulations that ultimately will be adopted by the individual States. Controversy has arisen between the metals industry and governmental control agencies regarding the status of stack gas desulfurization technology and the ability of industry to control sulfur oxide emissions to the degree proposed by some of the more stringent regulations currently under consideration. This paper evaluates the problems involved in achieving various degrees of control over smelter sulfur oxide emissions and the technology available to accomplish the task of assuring clean air. The estimated cost of compliance is reviewed for the copper, zinc, and lead industries, but principal at tent ion is given to the copper situation.

Elevated temperature electrical resistivity measurements were made by the Bureau of Mines on arc-melted, spin-cast, and hot-pressed columbium carbide¬carbon (CbC-C) and zirconium carbide-carbon (ZrC-C) materials up to 2,000° C. The CbC-C materials displayed electrical resistivity values ranging from 35.20 microhm cm at 23° C for hot-pressed material containing 12 wt pct carbon to 242.64 microhm cm at 1,622° C for arc-cast material containing 17.0 wt pct carbon. Electrical resistivity values ranged from 29 microhm cm at 20° C for arc-cast ZrC-C containing 16 wt pct carbon to 279 microhm cm at 1,951° C for hot-pressed ZrC-C containing 21 wt pct carbon. Data from a previous report were included to establish comparison between the electrical resistivities of the CbC-C, ZrC-C, and HfC-C systems.

Since 1941 the Federal Bureau of Mines has been conducting an intermit-tent program of placer and lode investigations to evaluate the potential tin resources of the western Seward Peninsula tin belt. Previous investigations were made in the Potato, Cape, Brooks (Lost River), and Ear Mountain areas. As part of this program the Bureau made a reconnaissance of reportedly tin-bearing stream gravels in areas adjacent to the previously worked tin deposits at Lost River and Potato Mountain. The objective of the reconnaissance was to determine if additional areas might be favorable for lode or placer exploration. The work was begun late in the fall of 1956 and completed during the following summer. The streams sampled were the Lost River and York Creek in the Brooks Mountain area and the Anikovik River and Kigezruk and Baituk Creeks in the York area. Samples were obtained by churn-drilling methods employing conventional placer-evaluation procedures. Holes were drilled at wide intervals at sites chosen as being representative of drainage areas rather than of individual gravel deposits. Minor to trace amounts of tin were found in the gravels of all these streams, but the highest grade was 0.35 pound of tin per cubic yard in the gravels of Lost River below the mouth of Tin Creek. Small amounts of gold were found on Baituk Creek and in one hole on the Anikovik River; the highest grade did not exceed 10 cents per cubic yard. Traces of scheelite and barite were found on York Creek, chromite was encountered in one hole on the Anikovik River, and minor amounts of titanium minerals (probably derived from basaltic intrusives) were found in the York area.

Bureau of Mines engineers engaged in studying stimulative methods of recovering oil have been making a series of tests on the effectiveness' of methods that may be applied in water flooding oil-bearing sandstones. The report gives the test procedures and results of a study of the rates and pressures used for injecting water into several sandstone formations in the Mid-Continent fields for the purpose of learning more about the mechanics and efficiency of the flooding process and to provide useful information for operators of water floods in this area.

This Volume documents the use of the Cone Penetrometer data analysis computer programs VERT and HORZ. The programs are interactive in that they prompt the user for input data and allow correction and modification to be made. The programs read data from the results of cone penetrometer soundings and convert the data to values of tan ø. Mean, standard deviation, skew, kurtosis, linear trends and autocorralation are computed by the programs.
